2023.06.05 16:12 Centumviri Making Treasure Matter! Part 1 aka The Ale Standard (Updated for 2023)
Since the dawn of D&D players have chased treasure. Coins, Trinkets, Gems, Jewelry, and Items of Power. Rarely do we do so with any form of realism. Metals are extremely heavy, and any realistic thought of carrying around tens of thousands of valuable metal coins is not only absurd but functionally impossible. Ever try and pick up a large change jar, like the kind you granny kept? Full Plate Armor weighs almost nothing compared to that sucker. But here is the thing… we don’t care. And we don’t care because it is fun to have 10k in gold coins jingling around in our pockets! I don’t know if we will ever do away with the nuttyness of carrying all those coins, but I do think we can do something about their value.
If you’re of the persuasion that the original D&D brand of cp, sp, ep, gp, and pp is the way you wanna go, and tracking all that is fun for you and your party then by all means keep on keeping on. Nothing wrong with that! But I am about to suggest a little something I call the Ale Standard. A method of tracking and using a modified standard currency, because I got a suspicion that a lot of us out there just don’t like dealing with the minutia of all those coins and conversions. We would also really like wealth to continue to matter, and in most cases matter more. I’ve noticed a trend toward “items” and a lot more hand waving when it comes to money. Which is just fine, but I, and maybe you, want to run games where every coin matters!
So let’s start with values. Assuming a metal rarity in your D&D world that is similar to our own… How much is a gold coin actually worth? Most of us in our minds picture a pirate movie-esq doubloon sized gold coin. Which is pretty huge if you think about it. And for the most part fictional. Actual gold coins were much much smaller. I’m going to warn you, parts of this train are pretty mathy. Hopefully you’ll ride it out, as after 40 years of D&D I think it is well worth it.
A U.S. dime. A coin worth 10% of a dollar weighs 2.268 grams. As of 2023 Gold sells for a little over $60 a gram depending on purity (US dollars). We will stick to $60 for simplicity. Gold has retained a pretty consistent value throughout human history. $60 can buy you some jeans and a shirt today and generally speaking that same amount could buy an equal value outfit when Jesus was kicking it in the middle east 2000 years ago. That’s why Gold was used as an economic standard for a long time.
(Well… we used to. Not saying the Gold Standard was perfect, but now we just make up numbers based on what we guess something might possibly be worth if it were to be a tangible item we could actually sell, all while just adding more numbers to our imaginary digitally created values… … … anyway… It’s sad, but D&D’s economy might actually make more sense, and I don’t think it makes any sense at all. But that's just an aside, and one some folks will probably disagree with.)
ANYWAY, no economic system is perfect, but we can tr and get a little closer in our Fantasy Games. A gold coin the weight of a dime would be worth about $150 dollars. An actual Spanish Doubloon weighed about 7 grams and was a little less than an inch wide (Varied depending on the time period). Making a standard gold coin worth $420. The price of a cheap, but not bottom of the barrel, flatscreen TV in 2023. How many times in our games do we as DM’s simply say for some drinks at the tavern or for an apple from a street vendor “1 Gold” to cover the costs. The ratio realistically doesn’t work. You could hand wave and say that Gold isn’t as rare in your world, well sure, but if a Gp covers an apple what the hell are people making Copper Coins for? And how then is anything made of Gold valuable at all? It just doesn’t track! And I really want treasure to matter in my world, and if an Apple is worth a Gp, or, you know, $420, gold doesn’t matter at all.
Player: Would you like an apple? Player: Why Yes I would! Merchant: That will be one TV. Player: No Problem! I happen to have 750 TVs right here! See how lame that is?!
Which brings me to the point of all this. Once the cost of items drifts into Gp territory in D&D, the economy completely falls apart. The PHB says Modest living is worth 1gp a day, you know $420 for a day’s expenses… over $50 an hour! That’s more than many people make in a week. Comfortable living (middle class) is twice that! So let’s put this back on track, and I suggest you do so by switching to a basic currency type. Call it whatever you want! It can be Crowns, Dollars, Coins, Gil, Rupees, Pinches of Salt, or whatever you wanna call it because the name becomes part of the flavor of your world.
The next thing you want to do is take one unit of that currency and equal it to a commonly bought item that costs 1 Unit of your currency. In my world that is the Ale Standard. The average Ale at any given tavern across the world costs 1 Coin. So when pricing things I ask myself how many Ales is this worth? And then I build off of that, creating other value benchmarks I can reference along the way, and very often using real world pricing to reflect the Coin cost.
Best of all it is not hard to track! Most people understand and are skilled enough with basic currency values, and so operating this way just makes sense to them. That aforementioned apple now costs a Quarter Coin… you know $0.25. Your player, who is about to begin tracking their wealth the way we track modern money, knows exactly how to take a quarter off their total. No more dealing with conversion tables for different coinages.
Say you go out to eat at an average restaurant. You get a drink (Ale). That drink typically costs about 205% of a single mid-priced meal. So an Ale is one Coin and a meal is 4 Coins. Total package 5 Coins. That is $4 for a drink and $16 for a meal so $20. A mid-level hotel stay is about $120 (30 Coins). A day’s wages for a poor lifestyle is 2sp according to the PHB. Which 20% of a gp, which according to our math above is about $120 a day or… $15 an hour… or 30 Coins. Which tracks for a poor but not squalid lifestyle. Stuff like that! And now that we’ve figured out a day’s wages we can easily calculate almost any value in our world simply by multiplying it by 30 Coins.
“But Mike” you cry “This does not sound simpler.”
Not up front. No. No, it does not. But after just a few conversions it will start to feel natural and just hang on… Imabout to blow your mind.
Once your “Coin” value is set and you have a good working knowledge of your base currency you can begin to quickly set reward values and costs in the D&D World that are often nebulous to us. As I said before, the pricing in the PHB doesn’t track well once they move into the Gp territory. A longsword in D&D would cost a ridiculous amount if Gp is translated accurately on the gold scale. But now we’re able to fix that, quickly. We’ve already determined a poor day’s wages above was 2sp (30 Coins), that means a D&D Gp should be worth 150 Coins. But according to the PHB a longsword is 15gp. Or 75 days worth of labor. Or you know… $9000. Which is BONKERS! And don’t even get me started on the cost of Full Plate Armor! A standard Iron Longsword, nothing fancy, probably took a couple days to make. So paying a laborer 30 Coins a day for two days is 60 Coins, plus say another 15 Coins for materials putting it at $350, Which, according to the internet, is completely in the ballpark for a “middling quality” hand forged weapon even by today’s standards.
This quickly translates to everything that happens in the world around you. You can begin to take a day’s wages and real world pricing and reduce it down to coins VERY quickly. Need a cart ride to the next town? 30 coins for the day’s work. Want a few hours worth of errands run? 15 Coins! Want a fence built over the next two days? 60 Coins. Sure it was easy to just say a Gp. But imagine paying someone $450 just to water your horse. That is insane, but we do it in our games all the time!
Looking for a skilled or expert laborer, double up the cost of the day’s wage! For example, building a simple one room house (Think Log Shed)? 5 skilled laborers at 60 Coins a day for 5 days would be 1500 Coins ($6000 for those not doing the math. Guess how much a 20x20 Aamish built shed costs?) Add land and furnishing costs and the total comes in at about, oh lets say, 10,000 coins or $40,000! Which feels about right for a tiny piece of land with a small furnished building on it. I mean compare that to a Basic Guildhall which has a listed cost in the DMG of 5000gp or you know almost $3,000,000… A cost that could be used to realistically build 65 20x20 buildings. You could build a good sized village for that cost if we’re talking sensible pricing.
Shifting gears back to selling stuff off, it is also now very easy for the players to reasonably counter-offer if they go after a deal… which we all know they love to do. And to have stuff ordered and crafted for them! Now when they do these things, you can make up prices that feel real and connective on the fly without needing to consult the PHB or DMG. How much does a healing potion cost? (PHB says $21,000) Pfffft…. You just quickly guess at and add some things like 10 Days of work, Highly Skilled Labor (say 100 Coins a day), and Expensive Materials (500 Coins). Voilà, your potion costs 1500 Coins. Or realistically, just over 3gp. Still pricy to early level adventurers but also still within reach!
I use the Ale Standard because it is close to realistic pricing, but still simple enough to multiply quickly. But if that is still a little too mathy for you, just jump a day’s wages being 25 or 50 coins. Multiplication by quarters and halves is a lot faster for those of us who don’t like math. It isn’t quite as on the money as realistic pricing as 30 coins, but it is still way better than $900,000 Full Plate Armor… or you know 2143 TVs.
I know this is a huge departure from the PHB economy, and that can be a little hard to get your head around. But I encourage you to do it! I think you’ll be surprised at how easy it is once you get going and best of all, you now just turned your “How much does that cost?” “One Gold” “How much does that cost?” “One Gold” “How much does that cost?” “One Gold” shopping sprees into something that actually reflects costs and makes money matter again. It becomes easy to charge them for things like tailoring and blacksmithing in a way that feels real and most importantly fun. Because let’s face it, when everything costs a gold, it becomes a lot less fun to spend a gold.
“But so what? We’ve done these extra hurdles, and for what? I could still do all this and use the coins listed in the Rule Books!”
Well, hang with me till next week when I show you the most wonderful effect doing this causes. How switching to Coins makes treasure matter more than it has since it was tied to Experience Points!

Layout: — Individual Team News + Stone’s Cold Takes
— Miscellaneous/Other NFL News
— Restaurant of the Week - Pittsburgh
Arizona Cardinals: - RB James Conner likes being an underdog
- HC Jonathan Gannon wanted to move forward with who was all in on the team when asked about DeAndre Hopkins
- Gained $4.21m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- QB Clayton Tune could work his way into a starting spot
- Potentially interested in moving on from LB Isaiah Simmons
This team cannot unload folks fast enough it seems. They are now looking to potentially move on from LB Isaiah Simmons who in many folks eyes has not lived up to the hype from the draft. WE shall see if they can get anything for him if they do decide to move on. The storyline I am most interested in watching this year here is first how long Kyler Murray will be out and second how rookie QB Clayton Tune is developing. It seems like they took him so they could try out a young QB in the interim while Murray is working his way back. Apparently thus far he has been doing well in OTAs.
Atlanta Falcons: - Team expects TE Kyle Pitts to be ready for season opener
- Ditching gradient uniforms and will wear throwbacks 3 times
Not too much news from the Falcons but many will be excited to hear about Kyle Pitts expected to be back for the season opener. Hopefully this is the year he can really break out but a lot will depend on the QB Desmond Ridder actually being able to throw him the ball unlike the past quarterbacks he has had who have not made things easy.
Baltimore Ravens: - WR Zay Flowers is impressing with his route running capabilities early on
Good news here because receiver seems to be a position where the Ravens have struggled to get good production. With new OC Todd Monken that should start to change and with an added emphasis on the passing game it inevitably should change as more throws are made.
Buffalo Bills: - Rumored that QB Josh Allen will be featured on the cover of Madden
- Signed:
- DT Ed Oliver to a 4-year $68m extension with $45m guaranteed
- WR Marcell Ateman
- OT Brandon Shell
- Supposedly out on WR DeAndre Hopkins
- Expect Edge Von Miller to be back for the season opener
Great move here signing Ed Oliver to his extension. He is a key piece of that d-line and helps hold them together. I personally don’t believe they or really any of the other teams that have said they are out on DeAndre Hopkins actually are. To me it appears more to be a message saying they are not going to be paying him the money that WR Odell Beckham got earlier this offseason. Only time will tell. Great news for the team that EDGE Von Miller should be back by the season opener. Personally though I would take my time with him and would be overly cautious to make sure he is fully healthy. Hopefully that is by week 1!
Carolina Panthers: - QB Bryce Young is already impressing with his poise
- Plan to use some Deebo Samuel-like packages for WR Laviska Shenault
The hype appears to be real for the Bryce Young but it is what every team says about their rookie quarterback who is a top pick so hard to decipher how folks are actually feeling. I am excited about how Frank Reich will use WR Laviska Shenault because I have always been impressed with his athletic ability and expected him to break out more. It seems this could have been the type of role he has been waiting for.
Chicago Bears: - Have other sites in mind potentially for a new stadium besides Arlington
- QB Justin Fields donated $10,000 to the special olympics
- WR DJ Moore has been performing well in OTAs
- Stadium is at risk after property tax assessment
A lot of news around the future stadium of the Bears. It appeared a couple weeks ago that everything was moving along as planned and no issues had come up. This week there was nothing but concerns and problems. I wonder if these are all real storylines or if it is something they are using to try and negotiate more with the government to get help with the stadium. In more football news is appears that WR DJ Moore and QB Justin Fields are enjoying working together and developing a good connection. This is important to give Fields someone he can trust like he did his receivers at Ohio State.
Cincinnati Bengals: - WR Tyler Boyd feels they one-upped the Chiefs signing Orlando Brown Jr.
- DE Sam Hubbard excited for what’s next this season
- Will hold joint practices with the Packers
Not too much football news here but they appear to be ready to take on the Chiefs again this year and make a deep playoff run. Also, it appears at this point that the team will keep RB Joe Mixon based on comments from the team and HC Zac Taylor. This offense per usual will be an exciting one to watch.
Cleveland Browns: - Strong possibility that WR DeAndre Hopkins ends up here
- QB Deshaun Watson is working hard to recruit him
- DC Jim Schwartz sees a benefit in d-linemen playing fewer snaps to stay fresh
- Gained $10.9m in cap space after June 1st release deadline
Good news and good vibes are finally coming out of Cleveland. Feels like it has been while. QB Deshaun Watson appears to be benefitting from having a full offseason and getting work in with his new receivers. He has been pushing hard for Hopkins and the Browns would make sense as a good landing spot for him given the prior relationship Watson and Hopkins had during their time in Houston. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well things appear to be going so far this offseason.
Dallas Cowboys: - Started long-term extension talks with CB Trevon Diggs
- WR Antonio Callaway was arrested Saturday in Miami
- Micah Parsons is more concerned with making impactful plays on defense
- Supposedly out on WR DeAndre Hopkins
- RB Tony Pollard is a little ahead of schedule with rehab
- Gained $10.9m in cap space after June 1st deadline
Similar to the Bills I don’t think the Cowboys are actually out on Hopkins but probably sending a message that he needs to bring down his asking price. I wonder sometimes if they are still saving room for RB Ezekiel Elliott to come back here and play especially with them gaining the $10.9m in cap space after the deadline. Also, hopefully the team can get something done with CB Trevon Diggs sooner rather than later because he has been an impactful piece on defense despite the big plays he occasionally gives up because he can change a game with one of his interceptions.
Denver Broncos: - HC Sean Payton puts a heavy emphasis on the importance of Guards in the NFL
- Released RB Jacques Patrick
- Gained $3.75m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- Signed:
Not too much news here but they did find their replacement for K Brandon McManus in Elliott Fry. I would say less news from this team this offseason is better because ever since QB Russell Wilson struggled it seemed like the media was out to get him and the team any chance they had. HC Sean Payton must be running a pretty tight ship.
Detroit Lions: - OC Ben Johnson expects offense to take a huge step forward this season
- RB Jahymr Gibbs has been standing out in practice running and catching the ball
- OT Penei Sewell is embracing leadership role
- S Tracy Walker expects to be fully cleared for camp
All good news this week which should be good for morale. Seems they have strung together a couple good weeks during their OTAs. Great to see that RB Jahymr Gibbs is getting some reps in and showcasing his abilities that made the team feel the need to spend a high draft pick on him. Great to see as well that Penei Sewell at the young age of 22 taking on a leadership role and getting good work in as well. With that said OC Ben Johnson could be prepping and is expecting for the offense to have a big year.
Green Bay Packers: - WR Romeo Doubs doesn’t think there will be a regression with QB Jordan Love
- OL David Bakhtiari says disrespectful to say they are rebuilding
- Will hold joint practices with the Bengals
It appears that it may be a bit tough in the post Aaron Rodgers era as expected. However, it does sound like there is less front office drama now that they are not having to work with him in the offseason. Time will tell whether the drama was more caused by a lack of good communication as Rodgers claimed recently or by the former Packers QB himself.
Houston Texans: - QB CJ Stroud is ahead of where the team expected him to be at this point
- RT Tytus Howard is in line for a big extension
- Released DT Taylor Stallworth with injury settlement
- Will hold joint practices with the Dolphins and Saints
Good news about CJ Stroud but again as I mentioned with Bryce Young it is hard to find a team that drafted a top QB in the draft not raving about their quarterbacks progress at this point. The joint practices they have setup will be great for QB CJ Stroud. The Dolphins and Saints should each have tough defenses this year and will give Stroud a bit better of an idea of what to expect from an NFL defense in a real game.
Indianapolis Colts: - QB Anthony Richardson is looking really good overall
- Worked out WR Breshad Perriman
Looks like the Colts are trying to get receiver help but haven’t decided on any yet. This is the team that should go out and get Hopkins. They need a true #1 receiver and Josh Downs while I think he will be really good would benefit from having a big bodied possession type receiver in Hopkins. Also, it would give QB Anthony Richardson more of a safety net in terms of a WR that can help him progress and see things that he may not have picked up on otherwise.
Jacksonville Jaguars: - K Brandon McManus called special teams coach to express interest in the team after being cut
- EDGE Josh Allen is the only player under contract not attending voluntary OTAs
- Being cautious with WR Calvin Ridley during OTAs
- Plan to have a RB committee approach
I am really excited for the Jaguars this season. They are kind of the forgotten team in the NFL most years but appear to be poised to make a deep playoff run this year. WR Calvin Ridley is going to be a huge difference maker this year and should benefit from QB Trevor Lawrence continuing to progress going into his 3rd NFL season.
Kansas City Chiefs: - Wife of Chiefs owner Norma Hunt passed at the age of 85
- Supposedly out on WR DeAndre Hopkins
- WR Justyn Ross has the trust of QB Patrick Mahomes
Sad news to hear about Norma Hunt’s passing as the whole league mourned and sent their condolences. They are also supposedly out on Hopkins which I believe means they are really saying we need you to come down on price. The Chiefs though per usual have revealed though their secret weapon in WR Justyn Ross who many had forgotten about due to him sitting out with an injury his rookie year. It looks like Ross may be back to prior form when he was making plays at Clemson with Trevor Lawrence.
Las Vegas Raiders: - Open to listening to trade offers for WR Hunter Renfrow
- HC Josh McDaniels is not worried about QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s foot surgery
Even though the media and some fans were starting to worry about Jimmy G’s foot surgery it does not appear McDaniels has any worries about him missing time because of it. Will be interesting to see what the team ends up doing with Renfrow with all signs from earlier in the offseason pointing towards a release or trade.
Los Angeles Chargers: - WR Quentin Johnson has been impressive according to teammates Keenan Allen
- OT Rashawn Slater is at 100% and has been for quite some time
Not much news here but it was great news to get confirmation from OT Rashawn Slater regarding his health and to hear WR Keenan Allen’s thoughts on rookie WR Quentin Johnson. This team should give us what they think they will every year and go far in the playoff this year.
Los Angeles Rams: - DC Raheem Morris helped save drowning child
- Signed:
Not much news here but signed WR Tyler Johnson who can help them make some big splashy plays on offense. DC Raheem Morris helped saved a drowning child and credited his AED training. Always cool to hear these stories about NFL coaches and players leaping into action to help and save other in the community.
Miami Dolphins: - Hope to sign DT Christian Wilkins to an extension before the season
- QB Tua Tagovailoa is completely healthy and showing signs of growth as a leader
- Real possibility they end up with RB Dalvin Cook this year
- Opted to only use 6 of 10 available days of OTAs
- Gained $13.6m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- Will hold joint practices with the Texans
This team appears to be click on all levels so far this offseason and there appears to be a lot more good coming with the team working to get a Wilkins extension done before the season and may even still end up with RB Dalvin Cook here soon. Tua being completely healthy at this point doesn’t feel like much of a surprise but it does appear that he is trying to take on more of a leadership role after finding his confidence last year. My main worry though with Tua is that last year he still was very much a rhythm quarterback in my mind so when he got knocked off that rhythm he had some really bad games. However, when he was able to keep in rhythm he at times looked like the best passer in the league. It will be key this offseason now that he knows the offense to be able to play off rhythm when necessary and make those plays that the top quarterbacks in the league make if he wanting to take the next step.
Minnesota Vikings: - Seems that only thing left for RB Dalvin Cook is an announcement of how he will be leaving the team by trade or by getting cut
- Head Coach Kevin O’Connell described RB Alexander Mattison as a every down RB
- Paid off their debt on stadium 23 years earlier saving taxpayers $226m in interest
- Expected that WR Justin Jefferson to be highest paid WR when he signs his extension
- Will have joint practices with Tennessee
It appears that the Vikings are in a holding pattern and I imagine are hoping to get a trade package they approve of for RB Dalvin Cook. Sooner or later though it appears that Dalvin Cook will not be with the Vikings this year. Big win though for the fans and locals in Minnesota with the team paying off their stadium early and saving taxpayers a bunch of money. Might get some more buy in from good press like that.
New England Patriots: - QB Mac Jones is aiming to earn the respect of his teammates
Not much news here but it appears things are moving along really well in comparison with last year at this time. QB Mac Jones seems happy and is working hard. It will be tough for this Patriots team with how stacked the division is but maybe a big move to get Hopkins and some improvement from the offense and Mac Jones and who knows they may be right up there with everyone else in the division.
New Orleans Saints: - DE Cam Jordan will play for the team as long as he wants
- QB Jameis Winston feels that he is still a starting QB in the league
- Excited to WR Michael Thomas to be ready for camp
- Will hold joint practices with the Texans
- HC Dennis Allen had Jon Gruden attend OTAs in order to aid offense with QB Derek Carr
- TE Juwan Johnson has been studying Julian Edelman tape at QB Derek Carr’s urging
Another team where things just seem to be clicking so far is here in New Orleans. QB Derek Carr seems to be doing a good job taking on a leadership role and working with teammates such as TE Juwan Johnson. Things will be going even better if WR Michael Thomas can actually return for camp and find a way to play near a level that he used to. Right now in a wide open NFC South it appears that this team will be the favorites to win it going into the season.
New York Giants: - Did homework on WR DeAndre Hopkins and are now supposedly not interested in pursuing him
- Officially added Ryan Cowden as executive advisor the general manager
- QB Daniel Jones is ok with rookie center John Michael Schmitz using “dead snap” technique
Not much here which may be a good thing for a New York team to get a break from all the media. This season will be an interesting one with how the team went all in on QB Daniel Jones. It kind of feels like besides the Eagles the rest of the division is up for grabs with no true strong contender emerging yet.
New York Jets: - QB Aaron Rodgers has enjoyed the communication within the organization
- Signed:
- Released OL Eric Smith
- The team and Quinnen Williams are not far off in contract talks
Good news on the Quinnen Williams front and in keeping Aaron Rodgers happy. Williams and the team are not far off in contract talks which hopefully means something will get done here very soon. Rodgers has been raving about the Jets communication skills which was his main gripe with the Packers. Now lets just make it clear that he does not need to be pulling the sled.
Philadelphia Eagles: - Team is excited for QB Jalen Hurts to make another huge leap
- Offered to trade for QB Russell Wilson but Wilson did not want to play in Philly
- DT Jordan Davis broke a blocking sled
Man what a difference one decision can make. Jalen Hurts I imagine would have been in Seattle had the trade happened for Russell Wilson. I bet Eagles fans are happy this didn’t pan out but it does not mean they need to cut Wilson any slack for not wanting to play in Philly if these teams meet in future seasons or end up playing each other in the Super Bowl. Eagles appear setup to be the main threat in the NFC.
Pittsburgh Steelers: - First round pick Broderick Jones getting 1st-team reps at Left Tackle
Not much out of Pittsburgh per usual but the good news is that Broderick Jones is progressing nicely and is already getting 1st-team reps at Left Tackle. I am sure QB Kenny Pickett is pleased with that.
San Francisco 49ers: - S Ji’Ayir Brown is already taking first team reps and has stood out in OTAs
- GM John Lynch feels QB Trey Lance has had a really quality offseason
- Very encouraged by progress and throwing session QB Brock Purdy had
- DL Arik Armstead very excited about adding Javon Hargrave to the group
- RB Christian McCaffrey excited to have a full offseason with HC Kyle Shanahan
- Plan to make DE Nick Bosa highest paid defensive player
Things are moving along just fine for the 49ers. Exciting to hear that S Ji’Ayir Brown is making good progress and apparently had 4 or 5 interceptions during OTAs. I imagine the team is also very pleased with the progress QB Brock Purdy is making in his recovery from elbow surgery. He appears to be on pace with the original timeline. If this team can figure it out at the QB position they just might be the most complete all around team up there with the Eagles.
Seattle Seahawks: - HC Pete Carroll expects his team to be aggressive when returning kicks and expects more squib kicks to be used
- WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been extremely impressive
- Signed:
- Benjie Franklin
- Montrae Braswell
- Cut:
- Forrest Merrill
- LaTrell Bumphus
Gotta love HC Pete Carroll. It seems like so far it has been pretty unanimous that all those that are playing or coaching football do not love the new kickoff rules. I am sure folks will find ways to take advantage of it though. Once again this week WR Jaxon Smith Njigba was impressive and should be establishing himself within that offense. Seahawks could very well be a sleeper team in the NFC that was good last year but that folks are paying a ton of attention to this year.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: - Antoine Winfield Jr. is expected to play Free Safety this year
- Respect is a key factor in the quarterback battle that is ongoing
- WR Chris Godwin feels his explosiveness coming back
This team has all the big name weapons at receiver one could ask for as long as they stay healthy. It was great to hear that Chris Godwin is getting his explosiveness back. Now not surprisingly it comes down to the QB battle and a big part of that is gaining respect from those veteran players and coaches in the building. I still feel like this battle is QB Baker Mayfield’s to lose at this point.
Tennessee Titans: - Longtime executive Bob Hyde passed away
- QB Will Levis had a rough week at practice
- P Brett Kern announced his retirement
- Will have joint practice with Minnesota
- Signed:
Sad news this past week here as well with the passing of Bob Hyde. Also, finally some negative news about one of the Quarterbacks from this year’s draft. Will Levis has been struggling. However, this should not be viewed as a bad sign because every rookie is going to struggle and Levis with his situation has the benefit of time.
Washington Commanders: - The Josh Harris bid after making some changes is inching closer to full approval
- CB Emmanuel Forbes has been thriving in the slot
- QB Sam Howell has looked the part and is taking command of the offense thus far
- OC Eric Bieniemy wants everyone to be like WR Terry McLaurin
- Gained $8.37m in cap space after June 1st deadline
- Released CB Cameron Dantzler
- Releasing G Andrew Norwell once he passes physical
Seems we are inching closer and closer to the Josh Harris Group’s bid being fully accepted by the owners after some minor adjustments. From the actual team and players it sounds like things are going really well and maybe better than a lot of folks expected. CB Emmanuel Forbes has been doing well in the slot and QB Sam Howell is looking the part and taking charge. The Commanders will be a fun team to watch this year and see how they end up when it is all said and done.
Miscellaneous/Other NFL News: - Still no announcement as to who will be the team featured on Hard Knocks
- CB Damar Hamlin is leading a multi-city CPAED tour
- Several NFL teams are waiting for RB Dalvin Cook to be cut
- Yannick Ngakoue wants a multi-year deal with a Super Bowl contender
- Chiefsaholic fan is still on the loose
- Tom Brady is certain he is done playing and has tried to make that clear to other teams
- RB Ezekiel Elliott is staying in shape
- Executive are nervous about WR DeAndre Hopkins ability to separate and run at this point in his career
- Less than 100 days from the NFL season
Restaurant of the Week: (Pittsburgh - Burgatory) Get excited Pittsburgh fans and all folks going to a game here! Burgatory is only a half mile from the stadium and has some of the best food so far from the restaurants that have been featured. One of my personal favorites is the Piggy Butter & Jelly. Yes, that is a burger with peanut butter and jelly on it. Don’t question it just try it. However, if for some reason you do not my other recommendation would be The Triple B which is a Bison, Beer Cheese, and Bacon burger. Hence the name Triple B. You can’t really go wrong with anything on the menu and the important thing though is that you don’t forget to grab a shake as well. My personal favorite is the Oreo Peanut Butter Pie shake. They are open every day starting at 11am and closer at 9pm everyday except for Friday and Saturday when they close at 11pm. Hop on over and enjoy this delicious food when in town for a game!

2023.06.05 15:03 Kiranmathew103 Introduction to Grass Pavers
Grass pavers have become an increasingly popular option for landscaping and outdoor construction projects in recent years. These interlocking pavers consist of a grid-like structure that allows grass or other vegetation to grow in between the gaps, resulting in a green, natural appearance that blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Grass pavers offer several benefits compared to traditional pavement materials, including improved drainage, reduced stormwater runoff, and increased soil stability.
Types of Grass Pavers There are several different types of
grass pavers available, each with its own unique set of features and advantages. Some of the most common types of grass pavers include:
Plastic Grass Pavers Plastic grass pavers are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and are designed to be lightweight, durable, and easy to install. The plastic material allows for a flexible design that can accommodate curves and slopes, making it ideal for landscaping projects.
Concrete Grass Pavers Concrete grass pavers are made of a combination of cement and aggregates, and are known for their strength and durability. They are often used for heavy-duty applications, such as parking lots and driveways, and can support the weight of vehicles without damaging the underlying soil.
Porcelain Grass Pavers Porcelain grass pavers are made of porcelain tiles that are laid over a gravel or sand base. They are extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. They also offer a sleek, modern look that works well in contemporary outdoor spaces.
Advantages of Grass Pavers There are several advantages to using grass pavers in landscaping and outdoor construction projects. Some of the most notable benefits include:
Improved Drainage Grass pavers allow rainwater to soak into the ground, reducing the amount of runoff that can lead to erosion and flooding. This can also help to recharge groundwater reserves and prevent water pollution by filtering out pollutants and contaminants.
Reduced Heat Island Effect Traditional pavement materials can contribute to the "heat island" effect, where urban areas become significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to a lack of vegetation and abundance of heat-absorbing surfaces. Grass pavers help to mitigate this effect by providing a natural, vegetative surface that absorbs heat and reduces overall temperatures.
Increased Soil Stability Grass pavers help to hold soil in place, reducing the risk of erosion and sediment runoff. This can be especially important in areas prone to heavy rainfall or flooding.
Green Aesthetics Perhaps the most obvious advantage of grass pavers is their ability to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. By allowing grass or other vegetation to grow between the pavers, they provide a green, natural appearance that looks and feels like an extension of the natural environment.
Applications of Grass Pavers Grass pavers can be used in a wide variety of landscaping and outdoor construction projects. Some of the most common applications include:
Parking Lots and Driveways Grass pavers can be used to create durable, low-maintenance parking lots and driveways that provide a green, aesthetically pleasing surface. They can also help to reduce stormwater runoff and prevent erosion.
Pedestrian Walkways Grass pavers can be used to create attractive, low-impact pedestrian walkways that blend in with the surrounding landscape. They provide a stable, slip-resistant surface that is easy to navigate and offers a natural, organic feel.
Golf Course Pathways and Cart Paths Golf courses are often surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, and grass pavers can be used to create pathways and cart paths that blend seamlessly into the environment. They provide a low-impact, non-invasive surface that allows golfers to enjoy the natural beauty of the course without damaging the underlying soil.
Residential Landscaping Projects Grass pavers can be used in a wide variety of residential landscaping projects, including patios, walkways, and outdoor living spaces. They provide a natural, organic look that works well in both traditional and contemporary settings, and can help to reduce the amount of maintenance required to keep outdoor spaces looking their best.
Installation and Maintenance Installation of grass pavers is relatively straightforward, but it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully in order to ensure a successful installation. Generally, the process involves excavating the existing soil to a depth of several inches, compacting the soil, and then laying a base layer of gravel or sand. The grass pavers are then laid on top of the base layer, with the gaps filled in with soil and seeded with grass or other vegetation.
Maintenance of grass pavers is minimal, but it's important to keep the gaps between the pavers clear of debris in order to allow for proper drainage and prevent the growth of weeds. Regular mowing or trimming of the grass or vegetation can also help to keep the area looking neat and tidy.
Conclusion Grass pavers offer a unique blend of aesthetic appeal, environmental benefits, and practical advantages that make them a popular choice for a wide variety of landscaping and outdoor construction projects. Whether you're looking to create a low-maintenance parking lot, a pedestrian walkway that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, or an outdoor living space that looks and feels like a natural extension of your home, grass pavers are a versatile and reliable option that can help you achieve your goals.

2023.06.05 14:15 AITAMarriedLady 7 month old with great head control on a Yepp Mini?
I know, I know... It says 9 months on the instructions for a reason but by then it will be fall and pointless to have even bought the bike as we'll have a car again. I had gotten the bike shortly after we lost our family vehicle, as a way to commute to places like the grocery store over spring and summer until my husband's student loans come in again and we can buy another vehicle.
We live in Maine and a bike's just not gonna cut it in a foot of snow, an inch of ice and/or 20° weather especially with a baby. Baby will be one just after Halloween. I have a helmet (Schwinn Classic Infant that dials down to 44cm) that is just slightly too large (she's like 41-42 now), like could put a winter hat on and it would fit but that's likely too warm over the summer.
I've checked and we're allowed to ride on the sidewalk which is what I'd planned at the beginning but there are a few spots that I would feel more comfortable on the road itself like while going across our bridge between our twin cities as the sidewalk isn't very wide, and the railing seems short when you're up higher, that said, we have a multi-use path along the river with it's own bridge that used to be a trestle so could just make that part of my route instead. Otherwise, while there are cars, there's a lot of one way streets with bike lanes and there haven't been many accidents.
I know other bike centric countries take their children from as early as birth but they have things like cargo bikes and leave baby in a car seat or something. I can't afford that so I did the best I could and got a pedal assist that was on sale for the hills and the Yepp Mini which I've set her in inside the house and she fits in it just fine. I've also taken the bike out with a dumbbell in the seat to see how it handled and I feel confident that I'd be okay using it as a regular bike at least if not the pedal assist part.
As to my baby, she's had head control since she was born, yes, really. It's gotten better over the months but she's always had it. She can sit unassisted and has been able to for weeks. I've read those are two important factors to know if baby is ready to sit on the bike seat. The seat itself doesn't have a recline feature but does sit back a bit on it's own towards the rider so she won't be straight up either.
Has anyone done this with their own baby or would you if you had a baby? If not, why not? Specifically would you just not do it because it says 9mo or is there a specific reason behind that decision? I've read that they put 9mo as it's when most babies have head control and can sit unassisted which she can already do so I'm wondering if other than the helmet issue, and the AAP saying one year old I believe for the neck muscles to support the helmet weight, if there's something I'm not seeing that gives an answer either way 🤔

2023.06.05 14:06 j-buff Sliding miter saw
I have a 10” metabo sliding miter saw. It’s just about a year old and not “heavily” used - have only cut relatively small stuff with soft wood - I recently noticed that cuts are out of square and I spent hours attempting to fine tune to the fence with no luck. I then noticed that the issue was with the slide/blade angle. There appears to be maybe a 1/16th of an inch deflection between the front of the blade to the back of the blade. This problem appears to get worse as It I push the blade forward. When cutting an 11” wide board, there is ~ 1/8th difference from one end of the board to the other. I don’t see any damage to the arbor and have tried 3 different blades. I have also attempted 3 times to deal with Metabo and their non existent customer service. Lowe’s also will not help as it’s out of the 1 month period for them to return. Any advice on correcting the issue??

2023.06.05 14:04 prasana2 Are you looking for Suppliers of UPVC Windows & Doors?
Welcome to Senthur glass house (Thanjavur) -The Glass House is best understood as a pavilion for viewing the surrounding landscape. Invisible from the road, the house sits on a promontory overlooking a pond with views towards the woods beyond. The house is 55 feet long and 33 feet wide, with 1,815 square feet. The Aluminum composite panel also popularly known as ACP is considered today as on the most popular and preferred material used in construction.Every architecture implementing modern day interior designs today requires the use of aluminum composite panel or ACP elevation. ACP Elevation & Facade Work in Thanjavur a new- age cladding material that's used for building front elevation (facades), interiors, signage, modular kitchen and many more. It is available in a wide range of colors and textures like wood, stone, sand, 3D etc.The unique design of double-glazed products insulates against heat and cold up to four times more effectively than single-glazed windows and doors. The space between the two panes of glass acts as a thermal barrier between your home and the outside environment. There are advantages and disadvantages of single glazed windows. The main advantage is the lower cost compared to double or triple glazing. The main advantage is the poor energy efficiency, which can lead to heat loss, higher heating bills and condensation. Double Glazing is when two panes of glass (separated by a layer of air), are used in a home's window. Single & Double Glazing Doors In Thanjavur, this provides another layer of insulation for your home, decreasing heat loss through your windows.304-grade stainless steel may be the best choice for a railing system designed for both indoors and outdoors – especially if your application is away from large bodies of salt water and won't be exposed to extreme conditions. The price of Steel Railings products is between ₹700 - ₹800per Feet .When it comes to strength and durability, steel is, hands-down, the winner. However, steel, particularly stainless steel, is the most expensive railing material. Casement windows are the most popular type of frame frames. They are also known as crank windows. These windows have hinges on the side walls structure frame that allow them to swing inwards and outwards Generally, the per sq ft cost for UPVC windows ranges between Rs200 and 550 for fixed windows and Rs 250 and 700 per sq ft for casements. UPVC Premium Windows and Doors Manufacturers .The combination style is around Rs 340-460 per sq ft and the sliding style comes at Rs 280-700 per sq ft.Typically lasting around 20 years, which can vary between 10-35 years depending on the quality and upkeep, if your UPVC windows were installed around 1999 it's likely that they could need, replacing or at least repairing by now. Though made from plastic, UPVC windows and doors are not susceptible to warping and cracking when subjected to heat. The frames come reinforced using galvanized iron, which means that they'll always retain their shape and size.

2023.06.05 13:43 BigDomesticCats What is The Biggest Maine Coon Cat?
Many cat enthusiasts consider the Maine Coon breed to be one of the most giant domesticated cats in the world. These cats have a unique appearance and are known for their friendliness, intelligence, and playfulness. However, the one thing that sets them apart from other cats is their size.
The Maine Coon is a giant cat breed, with males typically weighing 13 to 18 pounds and females weighing 8 to 12 pounds. But what is the most significant Maine Coon cat ever recorded? According to the Guinness World Record, the giant Maine Coon cat measured 48.5 inches from nose to tail. This massive cat was named Stewie and lived with his owner, Robin Hendrickson, in Nevada.
While Stewie was the most significant Maine Coon cat ever recorded, there are other Maine Coon cats that come close in size. For example, Scarlett's Magic is a Maine Coon cat that made headlines for being one of the most giant cats in the world. She measured 43 inches from nose to tail and weighed 21 pounds. Another notable big cat is Ludo, who currently holds the record for the most significant domestic cat weighing 35.2 pounds and measuring 44.4 inches.
In conclusion, the Maine Coon breed is known for being one of the most giant cats in the world. While Stewie was the most significant Maine Coon cat ever recorded, there are many other Maine Coon cats that come close in size. If you are looking for a friendly, intelligent, and playful cat that can also be a bit of a showstopper, then the Maine Coon may be the breed for you.
The Biggest Maine Coon Cat
The Maine Coon cat is one of the giant domestic breeds of feline in the world, known for their long and luxurious fur, gentle temperament, and playfulness. The big Maine Coon cat on record is a male named Stewie, who measured an impressive 48.5 inches from nose to tail by Guinness World Records. Stewie weighed over 33 pounds and stood 20 inches tall at the shoulders. Maine Coon cats are often described as "gentle giants" due to their large size yet affectionate nature with their owners.
To put these measurements into perspective, an average domestic cat typically weighs 18 to 24 inches in length and weighs around 8 to 10 pounds. It's incredible that the most significant Maine Coon cat is almost twice the length and more than three times the weight! These cats are a sight to behold, with their big, round paws, fluffy tails, and expressive eyes. They are well-suited to people who have ample space for them to roam, as Maine Coons are a very active breed that enjoys playing and exploring.
Stewie isn't the only big Maine Coon cat out there, however. Several other cats have come close to beating his records, such as Omar from Australia, who measured 47 inches from nose to tail, and Ludo from the UK, who weighed in at a staggering 35 pounds. These cats are often the result of careful breeding between large and healthy Maine Coon cats, and their owners prize them for their affectionate nature and majestic appearance.
If you are considering adding a Maine Coon cat to your family, it's important to remember that these cats require a lot of space and attention. They need to be better suited to apartment living, as they need plenty of room to run and play. However, if you have a spacious home and are looking for a gentle, playful, and loving companion, the Maine Coon cat may be the perfect addition to your family.

2023.06.05 12:40 burningexeter Currently, I'm in the middle of writing an Attack On Titan fanfiction before the anime's finale comes out. Not only is it a sequel to the anime but also is a well written and interesting yet subversive Mikasa x Historia fanfiction. Read the run-through below on the body text.
| The fic I'm writing is on Wattpad but when I'm finished with it, I'll carry it over to Archive Of Our Own. Said fic is called "Attack On Titan: A Former Queen, A Former Soldier" and it goes like this — Set two years after the Rumbling and one year after the bid returned Mikasa's scarf to her, we follow Historia Reiss - now under her old alias Christa Lenz - in hiding on the modern side of the world that is exactly how it is today and has ostracized Marley and Eldia.... until the most recent events, with her daughter Ymir as she wants to finally have and give a decent, normal, quiet life for her child and herself. They live in Argonauts Bay, a large seaside town that's an oddball cross between the Goon Docks and certain London/San Francisco housing and their home is a former bookstore that they made into their own living quarter with plenty of wonderful books still on the shelves. The whole first two acts of the story follow Historia in a not-so-normal day in the life of her as she has to pay what she owes to three certain people and we follow her as we explore her mindset, how she interacts with others, her love for her daughter and her new life now that she's left being the Queen of the Walls. Then all that changes when the third/final act comes around, after a very long day and when it's dark now, Historia comes home to find Mikasa in her home, having tracked her down as she's now a bounty hunter and hearing about Christa Lenz on a certain travel, and the result is an incredibly intense stand-off, reunion and cat-like game as Mikasa, in a sick and twisted way, toys with Historia in her own macabre and catty but sexual way. Mikasa tricks Historia into being right where she wants her and then proceeds to both assault and sexually assault the latter. Historia though stands up to her and Mikasa, through pinning Historia on her kitchen fridge, finally explains why she's here and it's because she wants to start a new life with her. See, after the bird returned her scarf, she realized she had to move on from Eren, she needed to move on. She's already been around half of the "new world" more than anyone on either Marley or Paradis from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Albuquerque, El Paso, Portland, Baltimore, Bright Falls and so on. But then her past that she was trying to run from all finally caught up with her and the result made her a bounty hunter. Her incredible ODM skills and fighting skills proved more than exceptional when hunting and killing "human sleaze" that are wanted dead or alive. She leaves some alive but most dead even joking in a macabre way that human heads pop off in rather peculiar ways. However after taking in another wanted fugitive, she heard of the inhabitants nearby in Argonauts Bay - one of which immediately caught her attention by her name, appearance description and personality. That being Christa Lenz. It's then that she realized what was happening to her and what she was becoming. Not wanting to be this, she sees Historia as the only way out - the only ticket out of this life. Mikasa explains that she and Historia have a lot in common especially with their relationships with Eren and Ymir and dealing with their losses. After a struggle to escape her grasp, Mikasa says to Historia "I've been waiting all day for this" now having had enough of Historia. Historia, in a mix of fear and confusion, asks in horror "W-what do you mean?" not realizing what's about to happen before it's too late. A devilish smile comes across Mikasa's face as she begins to laugh just as devilishly, she licks her lips in a creepy and unnerving yet sexual way, she looks Historia right in the eyes and closes in, chuckling to herself. Historia then bursts out screaming in horror, her mouth wide open, her pupils dilated, her eyes bulging out and her hair moving away from her neck and head. There's nothing but silence for five seconds then we cut or rather go back and see that Mikasa is kissing Historia, in still shock, with the former's tongue deep in the latter's mouth. The latter gives in and the two proceed to make out and have sex. After having sex, Mikasa and Historia just lay on the floor looking up, contemplating what just happened. Especially Historia who asks herself out loud "Oh, Historia.... what have you done?". The two of them have a natural but heartfelt conversation after this and discuss their lives then and now, the struggles of raising a child all by yourself in this world, their childhoods, the numerous individual places Mikasa's been, watching their mothers killed right in front of their eyes as kids, how the sex was, the impact that Eren and Ymir made on them and last but not least, Mikasa sincerely apologizing and begging for Historia's forgiveness. Before Mikasa shows Historia where her daughter is as promised, she pulls a beautiful golden ring out and asks her "Will you marry me?" to which a hesitant Historia finally replied with the answer Mikasa has wanted to hear all this time - "Yes". Historia is reunited with her daughter who was tied up and hidden in a cabinet by Mikasa as she introduces a tearful and scared Ymir to her new mother - Mikasa Ackerman. The final scene takes place at the end of the very next day as Mikasa and Historia, holding each other, look out into the sunset with the latter asking the former "Mikasa, what really was Eren for you?" and the former answering "My ending and my beginning". Details: These are the places that Mikasa tells Historia where she's been to.... Bright Falls, Sunnydale, Farmington, Charming, Santo Padre, Agrestic, Salem's Lot and Hawkins. Shared universe? Probably. Well, what do you guys all think and be honest. submitted by burningexeter to attackontitan [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 12:39 JRRT01 Case Study: Are Amazon monthly Kindle deals worth it?
I accepted an Amazon monthly Kindle deal. Here’s what happened.
Amazon offered me a monthly Kindle deal for Amazon UK. This means that they lower the price of your eBook (in my case to 99p). They also include it in their saver deal sections of books. Also, you retain 70% royalty rather than dropping to 35%.
The question is whether the sales increase is worth it to offset lower royalties. There is also the chance that a cheaper eBook may cannibalise paperback sales.
So for May 2023 my eBook was 99p, and my royalty was 69p per sale.
Context
I launched a non-fiction educational book normally priced £4.99 for eBook and £9.99 paperback in February 2023. For the first week I priced the eBook at 99p. The launch went well, and I sold about 800 eBooks in the first week. After that, sales started settling down. By April, sales were pretty steady.
In April 2023, I sold (in the UK) 49 books (13 eBooks and 36 paperbacks).
Royalties (UK) for April 2023 were £176.51.
What I did
Amazon informed me that they were going to include my book for May 2023. On 1st and 2nd May I tweeted about this. One tweet got about 2,500 views, and quite a few link clicks. On the last day of May, I tweeted again, and again got views and clicks. Other than this, I did no extra promotion (no advertising).
What happened in May
- I sold 174 books (125 more than April).
- I sold 146 eBooks (133 more than April)
- I sold 28 paperbacks (8 fewer than April).
- My total UK royalties were £200.02 (£23.51 more than April).
A large number of the sales happened in the first couple of days and the last day (33 sales on the last day). But orders were higher than April throughout the month.
Was it worth it?
For me, yes. I sold many more books, briefly got the Amazon bestseller tag for my category, and made slightly more money. As I am looking to reach as wide an audience as possible, this deal was a success for me.
Your answer may be different. If your priority is getting as many people as possible to read your book, then it can work well. If your priority is income, then the increase in royalties is likely to be smaller (and could conceivably be negative).

2023.06.05 11:57 Dapper_Bug_9473 (Artificial Dumbness) Prologue + Chapter 1
Artificial Dumbness
Prologue
Nadia Khan opened her eyes slowly, trying to make sense of the world around her. She had a pounding headache and felt fuzzy and disoriented, as if she were in a dream.
She lay on the cold, hard wooden floor, the thin blanket barely providing any warmth. The room was dark and uninviting, with only the faint light from outside coming in through the window. She heard the powerful roar of the ocean crashing against the boat and the creaking of the ropes swaying in the salty breeze.
She could feel the hairs on her arm standing up as she surveyed the area. There were several other people in the room, their bodies still and silent in their deep sleep. They were dressed in ragged clothes and had chains around their ankles. Nadia felt a cold metal on her own leg and realized she was also shackled to the floor.
She felt a surge of panic and confusion. Where was she? How did she get here? What was going on?
She tried to remember what had happened before she woke up. A blank space in her memory. She couldn't recall anything.
She reached for her headset, hoping to find some clue or explanation. But there was nothing on her head. No headset, no wires, no electrodes. Nothing.
She felt a sudden chill as a realization hit her. She wasn't wearing her VR suit, either. She was wearing a simple dress that looked like it belonged to another century.
She glanced back at the window. Outside, there was a clear blue sky and a vast ocean. The sun glinted off the distant island, its towering mountains and dense forests silhouetted against the sky.
She noticed something else—a small screen floated in the air next to her. As she looked, it had text and numbers. A game status screen? She wondered while squinting her eyes to read it.
Name: Nadia Khan
Class: Stowaway
Level: 50
HP: 100/100
MP: 50/50
XP: 0/10000
Skills: Stealth, Lock-picking, Dagger Mastery...
Quests: Escape from the Pirate Ship (0/1)
She was in a game world.
But how? And why?
She felt a surge of disbelief and fear.
This was impossible.
This was insane…
Chapter 1
The brave remote shores of the beach next to peaks of Mount Silwan had braved more than they showed on their brow. A local fisher, who most people around him considered as polite as a perched peacock, noticed a foundation stone with a marking that made him think of the taste of his wife’s cooking when she was not in a particularly pleasant mood.
The foundation stone was textured and rough to the touch, and from the perspective of a sparrow soaring high, it seemed of colors ranging from a vibrant crimson to a bottle-green with a hint of blueberry blue.
There was something unique about it—to the fisher, it looked like a hedgehog tumbling around, attempting to imitate a rolling tumbleweed in the Hami desert.
On one fine day, a day which did not seem at all different from any other summer day, the village, the beach, and the entire mount Silwan were wiped out completely.
It was all because of a mistake or rather a series of mistakes which occurred even though they had the minimal probability of occurrence—a probability which was lower than that of a group of Monkeys writing a book about a group of monkeys writing a sonata in the style of Shakespeare.
This story is about that mistake which has no relation to the bad cooking or the fisher, but is linked intrinsically to that Foundation Stone and its weird origin.
It all started with a President’s desire to make an AI to control the world.
Zhavi Mastermind felt the cold Himalayan air cut through him as he gritted his teeth and stayed determined. The task he came here for was worth all the effort and care he showed it. Being a software architect working for a start-up focused on mapping the universe, Zhavi had made himself enough money to pay for his travels and more. He could probably afford hired help. But then knowledge was precious, especially information which could lead to unlimited success or even world domination or more. Besides, he needed to have a tiny footprint. The more people with him, the easier it would have been for anyone to spot his operation. And then someone could interfere. Besides, he wouldn’t want even his hired help to know details about his plan. There was too much at stake here. So, he followed the only option for him that seemed right—he had to work under the radar.
His trip so far had been short and mostly sweet. As he had traveled all the way here, there had been a few hiccups here and there, but overall, it had been event-free. Most people recognized him as a tourist, so it made him easy to be ignored.
The night before had been tiring, as he had set up camp here. To a casual visitor, it would appear that Zhavi had set up his base simply because it seemed the right place. He had planned every step of the way. This was the place to be. It was around 30 feet from the target, which made it easy for him to set up a personal area network which had a range of up to 33 feet.
He targeted the place where a power surge had been detected and ignored. As he sat down waiting, he recalled how he had discovered it truly by chance. He had been working with data from a reconfigurable radio telescope and found a powerful signal—a signal which could only have been signifying intelligent life. As he analyzed, he found out that the source was not from any other place but a place in the Himalayan region in Northern Pakistan some distance from the base camp of one of the most formidable peaks, “Nanga Parbat.”
The encryption that he had cracked had been eye-shattering. Initially expecting it to be some boring secret communication by a government, it had shocked him to see the communication in a language beyond anything that existed on the planet. A higher dimensional language, so to speak, with words with meanings which were impossible to decipher for mere humans. Each word lay in the cross section of concepts. As Zhavi explored, he used brute force decryption with the help of resources from a global public super-computing facility to discover the meanings. And what he found was truly astounding. There were historical, cultural, and geographical references in the signals. It was impossible to understand them without taking notes on each of them. The problem, however, was that none of them were from Earth and that’s when he realized he had to get here.
The data scientists ignored the signal as an outlier even though it had been detected once. As Zhavi dug deeper, he found another incident over two decades back.
Zhavi had been compiling the data for the last three years now. And he knew now was the time for it to activate again. The signal’s source had been camouflaged to prevent human interference, except during this time.
What he had learned from the signal was too complex to be deciphered easily. But he knew it was enough to conquer the world and more.
He took a long breath inside. The freezing cold mountain air made him feel alive. He felt a gush of warmness as adrenaline poured inside him. The icy wind stung part of his exposed areas like mosquitoes made up of ice crystals.
As he moved outside the tent, snow as soft as cotton fell slowly from the sky. Zhavi was fully alert now. Everything was at stake. If he missed now, he would probably never have another chance. In the next twenty-five years, when the signal repeated, who knew if he could make it? That would not be the worst thing that could happen. The worst would probably be if someone else would find out and if he could find it, what would stop anyone else from doing the same? And the probability of that someone being a powerful government agency such as from the US was high.
Everything seemed just right. He had discovered the signal occurred in a particular alignment of the Earth with a certain very active star system in the Milky way.
If he could find it, someone else could find it too. So, it was now or never.
Zhavi authenticated and opened the shiny black box. Inside, lights were turning off and on as he flipped the switches. Screens around him lit as his custom designed distributed operating system booted up and synched.
A soft voice said, “Your secure Personal area network is now operational.”
“Turn on the security system.”
“Security system turned on. Cameras operational. Lasers are operational and looking for targets.”
Zhavi was a pacifist. He would always tell himself he never believed in violence. But he just hated to be disturbed. He was, however, also a realist. He realized the need for sacrifices for some causes. And that sometimes extreme measures need to be taken to attain success. If there was any such day in his life where he should never be disturbed, it was today.
As he listened to the whirring lasers and the automated drones guarding his position and looking for intruders, he focused his cameras on the approximate location where he thought the item should appear and waited. Everything seemed to be fine.
A sudden, blinding flash of light caused Zhavi to flinch in surprise. He took a step back, his eyes widening in wonder as he tried to grasp the magnificence of the object in front of him.
“Dr. GB, Dr. GB, sir, you need to see this. You have a letter.”
“I have a what?”
“A letter, sir.”
“How is it possible? You know, girl, your brain gone mad. We don’t even have an address. How can somebody send us a letter in the middle of nowhere? It’s the Congo river, not some small lake, Mary.”
“Sir, I assure you it’s for you. I just found it on the porch outside.”
It was a hot day, like many other days in Congo, as Dr. GB Smith sat on his reclining chair in one corner of the makeshift hut that he called his lab. He lazily eyed the plump woman standing near the door, her bright clothing standing out in the shadows.
“Why are you standing over there?”
“Sir, you didn’t let me come in.”
“It’s just a lab.”
“Sir, the last time I tried coming in, that fish thing you have in there. It shocked me.”
“Aha, the eel. You should be proud, Mary. You should tell your grandchildren an eel struck you.”
“Sir, I doubt I’ll have any children or even get married if I keep working for you.”
“It’s not that dangerous, Mary. Be brave.”
“Sir, it’s not about just the place being dangerous. Of course, there are no safety procedures or anything. The real problem is that you don’t pay me. It’s not like you paid me some months of salary and then got late with just one. You haven’t paid me anything. So, if I don’t die after being bitten by one of these things that you keep here in this lab, I think I’ll probably die of starvation. To let you in on a little secret, I am probably only surviving because I am living with my parents.”
“Too much information. TMI, Mary,” said GB. As he eyed her, Mary stood still, looking unconvinced by Dr. GB’s invitation or even his attempts at humor, which she probably considered at least distasteful. Her one hand was on the door, with the other holding something with just one foot inside the lab.
GB scratched his white beard, trying to keep up with his planned expression of an air of disinterest, and looked into her eyes. “So? Aren’t you going to give it to me?”
The girl first looked on both sides and then ran towards him. Before he could say anything, the letter was flying on top of him as he masterfully apprehended it on its way to the side.
He said, “So we are all set, right? You are telling me you are fine. Not starving and still alive. Every day, this is just what every animal in the river can wish for.” He looked up only to find her running away towards the door.
GB sighed. As much as he didn’t want to show it, he was worried. This was the third one this year, and he was running out of candidates. Mary had tolerated him for a period far longer than the previous ones.
As he looked at the letter, he felt the texture of the wax seal beneath his fingertips. His eyes opened wide.
