This occurs because the muscles produce energy as quickly as possible by dipping into the body’s stores of glucose, producing an acidic substance called lactate as a byproduct. This is what gives people that "burn".
A person’s lactate threshold is when the production of lactate exceeds their body's ability to clear it from the system. Research suggests training around one’s lactate threshold could be beneficial for exercise performance — here's how. https://www.livescience.com/what-is-lactate-threshold
Greenwashing happens because companies know that a growing number of consumers and investors care about the climate, but it’s much easier to take small or symbolic actions that don’t cut into their bottom line—tiny “win-win” actions that don’t make a real difference. “If you’re spending more money to try to be a better company on the climate, your profitability may actually go down, because that might cost something,” Eric Orts, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School who studies sustainability, told me.
But something is happening in the world of financial regulation that could help. Very soon, many big companies around the world will be legally required to disclose information about their emissions and how exactly they plan to hit the targets they keep announcing. Corporate climate promises, it seems, might soon have to be more than just empty words. Still, there may be limits to what can be accomplished through financial regulation, a system designed to protect investors rather than the planet. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2023/03/greenwashing-refuses-to-die/673241/
conversation with an official at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency had researched the best way to fatten pigs—research that was never published. When they fed pigs whole milk or coconut oil, the pigs stayed lean—they found that the best way to fatten pigs was to feed them skim milk.
The Department’s dietary guidelines stipulate reduced fat milk for all Americans above the age of 2. Could this policy—initiated in the 1990s—explain the increase in obesity among American children? A couple of studies indicate that this could be the case. https://www.theepochtimes.com/health/childhood-obesity-what-youre-not-hearing-in-the-news_5018844.html
A new Australian study focused on defence veterans’ mental health has found strong evidence that assistance dogs used in conjunction with traditional therapies provide the most effective treatment outcomes.
Almost 90 per cent of veterans reported improvements in their post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety 12 months after being matched to an assistance dog, according to researchers https://www.newswise.com/articles/lending-a-paw-for-defence-veterans-clear-evidence-that-assistance-dogs-help-improve-mental-health
Because it hasn’t been processed, raw honey contains enzymes like glucose oxidase, which give honey antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.
Such enzymes are destroyed by the heating and filtering used to process most commercial honey (5Trusted Source).
Moreover, raw honey is less likely to be contaminated with sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup and also tends to contain more antioxidants than processed honey (6, 7Trusted Source, 8). https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/raw-honeycomb#nutrition

In past decades, combatting climate change has often been seen as a zero-sum game: either you were for a transition off fossil fuels or you were on the side of the oil companies. But younger activists like Thunberg see that the clean energy transition is far more complex than that, and green transitions that don’t center marginalized people risk creating a new world that is just as damaging as the one we have now.
The Norwegian government “should have seen it coming for violating human rights,” Thunberg told Reuters when asked about the need for the protest. https://gizmodo.com/greta-thunberg-wind-farm-protest-norway-indigenous-1850174313
You can make a case for saying the Gravettian is the first pan-European culture,” says University of Tübingen archaeologist Nicholas Conard.
But despite appearances, the Gravettians were not a single people. with satellite datasets showing that forest loss caused robust reductions in precipitation at scales greater than 50 km. The greatest declines in precipitation occurred at 200 km, the largest scale we explored, for which 1 percentage point of forest loss reduced precipitation by 0.25 ± 0.1 mm per month. Reanalysis and station-based products disagree on the direction of precipitation responses to forest loss, which we attribute to sparse in situ tropical measurements. We estimate that future deforestation in the Congo will reduce local precipitation by 8–10% in 2100. Our findings provide a compelling argument for tropical forest conservation to support regional climate resilience. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05690-1
Then, they extracted PFAS from the paper and solid sludge in sewage and analyzed them for 34 chemical compounds. The most prevalent among them was a chemical known as disubstituted polyfluoroalkyl phosphates (diPAPs), precursors that can transmute into other, more carcinogenic PFAS.

The researchers grew three groups of strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch) in identical conditions, applying BOS or DIF to two of the groups when the berries were still green. Even after treatment, the fully grown berries were identical in size and color to those grown without pesticide. Yet, under the surface, the team found a number of chemical changes caused by both of the fungicides:
The levels of soluble sugars and nutrients, such as sucrose and vitamin C, were reduced.Sugars were converted into acids, further reducing sweetness. The amount of volatile compounds changed, subduing the berry’s taste and aroma.
Looking more closely, the team found that BOS had a direct effect on the regulation of genes involved in cellular pathways related to producing sugars, volatile compounds, nutrients and amino acids. https://www.acs.org/pressroom/presspacs/2023/february/are-your-strawberries-bland-pesticides-could-be-to-blame.html

In a new study, ecologists have shown that bees' pesticide exposure depends upon their interaction with the environment, meaning different species face different risks in any given environment.

Our bodies have nervous systems, digestive systems, immune systems and they also have endocannabinoid systems (ECS). The research on the ECS is still relatively new, so we're not entirely sure how this system works, but it plays a big role in mood, immunity and homeostasis, or general balance throughout the body. It was discovered in the '90s by scientists studying cannabis, hence the name.
Cannabis plants coincidentally produce drugs like THC and CBD, a more medicinal cannabinoid, that can operate on receptors in the ECS. This is why THC gets people high, while other cannabinoids like CBG, CBN and THCV can stimulate different health-promoting pathways in the body. THCV, for example, is associated with lower weight, though the way it works is too complex for weed to constitute a weight-loss drug. https://www.salon.com/2023/03/04/why-eating-cannabis-edibles-feels-so-different-from-smoking-weed-according-to-experts/

There are several impactful historical moments that helped shape the community of Salem County, New Jersey. Here are a few:
Settlement and Colonial Era: The first European settlement in Salem County was established by Dutch and Swedish settlers in the mid-1600s. In the 1700s, Salem became a hub for shipbuilding and commerce, which attracted more settlers and helped establish the community.
American Revolution: Salem County played an important role in the American Revolution, with several notable battles and skirmishes taking place in the area. Local residents were actively involved in the fight for independence, including providing troops and supplies.
Underground Railroad: Salem County was a key location on the Underground Railroad, which helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North. Several prominent abolitionists, including William Still and Robert Purvis, lived and worked in Salem County.
Industrialization: In the 19th century, Salem County underwent a period of significant industrialization, with the establishment of factories, mills, and other manufacturing facilities. This brought jobs and economic growth to the area, but also brought challenges such as labor disputes and environmental pollution.
Civil Rights Movement: Salem County was not immune to the racial tensions and inequalities of the 20th century, and local activists played a role in the Civil Rights Movement. One notable example was the 1963 protest march in Salem led by civil rights leader Bayard Rustin.

Cool knife,-525 shipped:https://imgur.com/a/30vNCvYAlso here’s some info on the Reserve line according to the hinderer site: “A very special part of the production line of knives here at Rick Hinderer Knives is the line that I call The Reserve Line. As in a lot of other industries such as the fine bourbon world, The word “Reserve” is reserved for the very special limited parts of a product line. What I have done to incorporate this into the RHK production line is to separate a few knives from each production run and those knives I build and finish each myself. I build them in my own separate shop here at the Ranch. These knives will also have my build card in the box showing me as the builder. Also the box will be labeled signifying the Reserve status. This is a perfect way for those desiring a RHK production knife built by Rick Hinderer.”

2022.11.14 13:59 Big-Creme-7098 Screenwriter’s News for Monday, November 14, 2022

I skim the trades, so you don’t have to.
◊‘Airplane!’ Co-Screenwriter (and Director) David Zucker Says Hollywood Is ‘Destroying Comedy’
https://variety.com/2022/film/news/david-zucker-hollywood-destroying-comedy-too-sensitive-1235429200/
My two-cent takeaway: Those who don’t, won’t or are incapable of seeing the humor in anything will have an uphill battle since humor can lend voice to the unspeakable, and it will always come out. The question is: where’s the line between good-natured jokes and vicious mocking?

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/skyfall-writers-on-daniel-craig-james-bond-1235257806/
My two-cent takeaway: It’s already been ten years since Skyfall, and I never realized they guys had been writing the bond scripts for the last twenty-five years since The World Is Not Enough. The ending has a bit of an A-Team feel to it, but enjoyable non-the-less. With all their experience, it’s not a surprise that the finale could be a last-minute endeavor, but surely only an exception.

2022.10.10 08:20 karenadona Supply-Side Economics. What the Tories don’t want you to know.

Supply-side economics.
The Tory conference or, “With the truth so dull and depressing, the only working alternative is wild bursts of madness and filigree” (Unknown author). An American pollster and strategist Frank Luntz, guru to successive Republican party leaders, has been working at the Tory party rally instructing activists. “Life is tough now. Be prepared for it to be even tougher in 2023,” his first slide stated. Not sure if he meant for the activists or the U.K.? Luntz had the Tory activists write down three words on a piece of paper: “supply-side economics”. And then he told them to cross them out. “Because I never want any one of you to say those words. Ever. Again. Because no one knows what they mean.” On Sunday Cabinet Office Minister Nadhim Zaahwi said that if the government can deliver on priorities like health and social care they will be confident in going to the country and saying give us another turn. Nadhim, really? Your party has systematically destroyed the social care and have been busy driving a wrecking ball through NHS England since your lot took over from The Dinosaur Gordon Brown in 2010. Nadhim Zaahwi also went onto say that it seems unlikely that planned power cuts will take place to households this winter. This follows on from a warning from the national grid. Again Nadhim you are not being overly reassuring, the Subject Matter Experts are saying one thing and you a cabinet official in the least trusted, most neoliberal government of all time is saying something else. Is it little wonder the Conservative and Unionist Party is detested and the First Minister in my humble opinion was quite right to highlight that. The Tory party never like the spot light on them and they never like to be told how real people feel about them and their policies.
Our future is bright, Independence is right.
Cliff Purvis
 ************
Supply-side economics holds that increasing the supply of goods translates to economic growth for a country. In supply-side fiscal policy, practitioners often focus on cutting taxes, lowering borrowing rates, and deregulating industries to foster increased production.
Reagan/Thatcher Economics. It didn’t work then and it definitely won’t work now. Eg they have had ten years of low interest borrowing. Didn’t grow the economy. And the unions are already not going to take any more deregulation. They are ready fir a fight. Everyone is. They want workers to have no holiday pay, no holidays, slave wages, no minimum working hours, no minimum working wage and no contracts of terms and conditions. And THAT’S why they had to leave the EU. Because that was all the protections you had. And now they have gone.
And how are they going to increase the supply of goods ? And who is going to buy those goods ? Because no one I know can afford the basics never mind buying more goods !!!
We must get rid of them for England’s sake. And we must get Indy for our own.

2022.07.20 10:01 autotldr Most major nations lag in acting on climate-fighting goals

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 86%. (I'm a bot)
WASHINGTON - For most of the major carbon-polluting nations, promising to fight climate change is a lot easier than actually doing it.
"Even if Europe meets all of its climate goals and the rest of us don't, we all lose," said Kate Larsen, head of international energy and climate for the research firm Rhodium Group.
"It's a grim outlook. There's no getting away from it, I'm afraid," said climate scientist Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics.
His group joined with the New Climate Institute to create the Climate Action Tracker, which analyzes nations' climate targets and policies compared to the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
"We are losing ground against ambitious goals" such as keeping global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius or 1.5 Celsius since pre-industrial times, said veteran international climate negotiator Nigel Purvis of Climate Advisers.
Seven years ago, when almost all the nations of the world were preparing for what would become the Paris climate agreement, "It was all about ambition and setting ambitious targets," Larsen said.

We all know the hustle of losing your wallet and the challenge of retrieving those IDs and important documents that we lost with the wallet.
No one was thinking of the worldwide widespread problem of wallet theft at that time but the concept and idea of Arista Vault’s Smart Wallet was born through that one incident.

In 2017, Miss Purvi Roy, Col. K.K. Singh, and Atul Gupta founded Arista (Sanskrit word that means "unhurt''), with the goal of providing security and safety in people’s everyday life. Innovative ideas don't wait for the perfect opportunity to strike. A group of technologists, designers, and business professionals collaborated to create a ground-breaking, high-tech intelligent device that will protect, simplify, and relieve the everyday grind by solving the problem of theft & lost goods.
2018: Introducing “Wallet-Bot”
📷
It took over a year for the technological and physical design of the “World’s First-Ever Alive Wallet” that was able to protect itself from getting lost or theft after which in 2018 finally “Wallet-Bot” was introduced. The product was launched through Amazon's exclusive Launchpad and received a massive response across the country, with individuals not only buying but also gifting it.
The company has been named "Innovative Tech Company of 2018" by the Agni Govt. program. The first year of the brand was very good because of the enormous response from customers, Arista Vault was named as the "3rd Top Emerging Brand of India" by Amazon.
2019: Year of Successful Partnerships
📷
Arista Vault reached a major milestone when it received government funding, validation, and support in 2019, the year when The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology of India with Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and Electropreneur Park (EP) as part of the Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) initiative. Two world-class labs were being given to the company a contract to design and develop its revolutionary product under government supervision.
With the government backing & utmost support, Arista produced and patented its products.
At the TIE Global Summit 2019, Arista Vault was awarded the “Spirit of Manufacturing” award. No amount of magic can transform dreams into reality; nevertheless, perseverance and hard effort do. In 2019, the company launched six more products after starting with one.
2020: The Covid-19 Outbreak
📷
In 2020, the company started expanding to many international markets like UAE, USA & Chile. The COVID-19 outbreak triggered unparalleled mass dismissals and furloughs that was the time, during lockdown when most of us were inside the home, team Arista was brainstorming & working day in and out. The quest was to devise tools based on prevention methods against this deadly virus within 21 days. We launched a Made in India product series “Shuddhi Series”.
It was created as a blessing in disguise and then supplied to hospitals and government agencies. After extensive testing, the equipment was certified by NABL which was later patented and exported to Dubai, the Middle East, and Egypt within a month of its release. On April 10, 2020, the product earned the "National Award" in the all-India innovation competition "Safe India Hackathon #IndiaFightsCorona".

Video: The Basics

To be fair I'm not the biggest Bond fan. I loved Skyfall, but feel the rest aren't that impressive. But, let's forget the story for now, how good does No Time to Die on 4K UHD look? Let's see.
The movie looks absolutely superb. It comes with that "4K POP" that we all look for, with great dynamics, and excellent color. Many shots in this movie are what I would call reference quality. Now, to be clear, that doesn't mean I think it's a reference disc. But, some parts of this movie look so good I can't help but be amazed at how good it looks.
I'd like to talk about what I really liked about the transfer first, and then pick out things that were not perfect. First, as I said, it has a 4K pop, a brightness that most modern movies don't have. Similar to Tenet on 4K in many ways, but not quite as dynamic in my opinion. To me, this looks like film because it doesn't have that "processed" look that I despise of digital cameras. I think one of the best parts of No Time To Die's video quality, is how bright and detailed it is. Towards the end, there's a discussion between Daniel Craig and Rami Malek. The picture quality is absolutely stunning! It has brightness, color, and sensational detail. There are many shots like this, close-up shots that look gorgeous. Shots like this weren't possible years ago, IMO. There's no question that this looks 4K, and is completely impossible on Blu-ray at 1080p.
So let's wrap this up, a great-looking disc and that's it, right? Not quite. A review score should be about its overall quality, IMO, not just its flashy parts. If I reviewed this movie just based on its best parts it would get a 5, no question, but the entire disc must have continuity. It must have consistency throughout, and this transfer doesn't quite have that.
Let's talk about the elephant in the room. Edge Enhancement and Ringing. Yeah, it's obvious. Some is caused by the cameras themselves, and some is caused by minor edge enhancement. How can you tell the difference? Ringing is more of a halo around hard edges, edge enhancement is more gritty. If you look at the best in the industry for edge enhancement and sharpness control it's Arrow Video. I see movies from them on 4K with zero edge applied, they produce completely smooth transfers. The big boys, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, Disney, all add minor sharpness to their movies. Typically this is done because they deal with big movies finished at 2K, and they use a bit of edge to bring up the sharpness. I don't think it's needed, ever, but they do it anyway. No Time To Die is a 4KDI, yet it's not a clean as an Arrow Video transfer, why? Are they still adding minor edge, even on 4K titles? To my eyes, it appears so.
With a slight edge being applied to the disc, it gives film grain a partially gritty look. This doesn't look good in some average light-output scenes. Where Bond is interviewing Christoph Waltz's character. There are instances of minor artifacts and breakup here and film grain inconsistency. Also, talking film grain inconsistency, this movie struggles with it. Certain scenes don't appear to have much film grain, and others do. Back in the CRT days, there was something called DC restoration. If I remember correctly, when the screen was bright it crushed all the black level detail because it was so bright. Well, that's kinda what's happening here, but in a slightly different way, I'll explain. The shots that look absolutely incredible are all bright scenes. These scenes crush "so to speak -- not actually" the artifacts and encoding imperfections. The issues are impossible to make out and the picture looks incredible. It's only possible to see the imperfections in the dark and average light scenes. In an average light scene, I can really see what's happening in the transfer, and it's honestly about average, maybe just above, but still, it's not perfect.
Is it bad? No, far from it, but it does have inconsistencies from bright scenes and dull scenes. Again, if you just showed me the bright scenes only, then yeah, those scenes look reference quality. They look superb, but film grain consistency, encoding, ringing, are a concern of mine.
With all that said, what are my final thoughts? No Time To Die on 4K UHD is an excellent-looking movie. The cameras are absolutely superb. The disc has amazing detail, but I do see some minor edge and some heavy camera ringing around black suits, faces, and hard edges. Some poorly lit and average lighting scenes don't look as good as they should. However, with some of the things I don't like, there's so many things that I do like. It's bright, actually, it's super bright and it has a filmic look that most modern movies simply don't have.
Highly Recommended.

THE BASICS: AMAZING BUT HAS SOME MINOR ISSUES

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Audio: The Basics

![img](ijmlmo02pr681 " ")
No Time To Die 4K comes with an uncompressed Dolby Atmos soundtrack and sounds really nice.
Dialog has been mixed perfectly. Even in the bar, where music is played, and I still hear voices perfectly clear. This isn't easily done. From all the movies I watch and hear, I think this is done perfectly. I will say though the movie is around 2 db below reference, and does need a little boost in volume.
How does the Atmos audio sound? I call this type of mixing "when needed". If we need voices above us we get it, and if we need gunfire from behind us we have it. It's not an over-the-top mix, and I respect that. It sounds very natural. We all love our demo discs, but I certainly do appreciate movies mixed this way. It has a sound of control. However, with that said, there's many times that the overhead Atmos channels aren't used one bit. The use of 7.1 is absolutely stunning, but Atmos? No, not really. There's a scene in a bar and Bond and the girl are talking over the phone, and you hear both voices in the height channels. I think this is done well. It gives the impression that the sound is in our head, it's a nice touch. But where else is the use of height channels in the movie? Sure, at the end where the plane fly's through us and above us sounds nice. This can't be done in 7.1 and is great, but there's just not enough of it.
The bass? The bass is slightly muted, much in a similar way that the mix isn't over the top. I think that they could have pumped the bass a little more. I compared this movie to Tenet in the video, so I may as well compare it in audio also. The bass in Tenet is right on point, and in my opinion, 100% at reference level. While No Time To Die has good bass, it's just not mind-blowing. I want more. There's a big discussion about upmixing to Auro 3D lately, and honestly, this is one time where Auro 3D fills in that "missing bass" quite nicely. Unfortunately, many receivers that aren't a Denon A-110 or an X8500h miss out on the back surrounds if they switch to Auro. This is incredibly annoying, and it's matrixed into surround left and surround right, which, in some setups may sound good.
Overall? I think this movie falls into the place where the audio is basically flawless from a quality point of view but isn't flashy. I would make sure your volume is nicely in check. It's 2 db low, so it does require that you increase the volume. A really nice-sounding movie, but it's not an Atmos demo disc. If this mix made proper use of the height channels it would be right up there with the best sounding discs this year. Even with partially muted bass, but it ends up as just being good, but not perfect.

HOW I REVIEW THE BASICS
I just write what I see, nothing super in-depth; just what I see. Do I see noise in the blacks? Edge enhancement? Digital Issues? Scaling Problem? I will let you know if I see any errors in the discs, and explain how good they really look. Same with the audio; a very simple review method. I have no agenda other than finding and reporting what I see and hear. My reviews will not get a reference certificate unless it's flawless, and I will not be giving out 5/5 video/audio without merit. I'm going to keep this really simple, and I hope you enjoy that side of my Reviews. Thank you.

2021.03.30 00:25 buddythetrader The Close

Good afternoon. Here's what you need to know to end your day.
The Archegos saga hit markets, though not as much as expected. Sail free, Suez ship! The Ever Given was finally unstuck. StanChart's bid to socialize WFH staff: holographic water coolers. Drunk on risk. Not our words, but we think they make a lot of sense as investors, back at their desks, processed the weekend's news.
Let's start with a recap: Archegos, a secretive hedge fund, cratered, causing billions of dollars of potential losses for global banks. Two storied names of American media posted their worst market days ever. And securities regulators are monitoring the situation. Despite all that, the S&P closed down just 0.1% today. You can thank Jerome Powell & Co. "When the Fed has rates at zero and QE is ripping, they are essentially the bartender that is handing out as much booze as possible," said Peter Boockvar of Bleakley Advisory Group. "Many people get drunk on risk, like the fund on Friday, and they get into an accident." And the block trades that signposted the Archegos saga on Friday keep coming. Wells Fargo executed trades—on ViacomCBS, Baidu, Farfetch and Vipshop—worth a combined $2 billion, a person familiar said. A $500 million stake in Rocket was sold through Morgan Stanley, also according to people familiar. If you can't get enough of this story, check out this piece on the derivatives at the center of the Archegos blowup, and this on how banks tried to head off the chaos. Finally, read up on how the SEC recently lifted a ban on Bill Hwang, whose former firm pleaded guilty to trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks in 2012. That's probably enough to process before Tuesday morning hits. What Else Is Happening Whatever floats your boat. For the ship stuck in the Suez Canal, it took tugs and dredgers working day and night—and a bit of help from Mother Nature. Salvage teams took advantage of strong tides to finally free the Ever Given, allowing other vessels to start moving again through the major thoroughfare. Horns sounded in celebration of the feat, which involved shoveling 30,000 cubic meters of sand and removing part of the canal wall. Still, cargo delays will continue for weeks, if not months.
Amazon's historic union election vote at a facility in Alabama concludes today, though counting may take several days. The stakes are high for all involved. If the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union prevails, the unionizing drive could spread to other Amazon facilities, and there's the fear that Amazon might just shutter the warehouse. On the other hand, a loss for the RWDSU would be a major setback for the U.S. labor movement.
Time to take your shot. Joe Biden said 90% of adults will be eligible to get a vaccine in three weeks, and that his administration will more than double the number of pharmacies where inoculations are available. The news comes as the head of the CDC warned of "impending doom" as case numbers rise again. In New York, those 30 years and older will qualify beginning March 30, and those 16 and over beginning April 6, Governor Cuomo said. Meanwhile, Apple's offering PTO for employees getting vaccinated.
Opinion The Archegos implosion should prompt regulators to ask whether this was another financial calamity that could have been avoided, Bloomberg Opinion's Elisa Martinuzzi writes. It doesn't help that an increasingly concentrated securities industry means the risk of a hedge fund imploding is being left in the hands of fewer and fewer Wall Street banks.
Although Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan anticipates a rate increase in 2022, it's because the rate of inflation is likely to increase this year that we'll probably see lower odds of a rate hike next year, Conor Sen writes for Bloomberg Opinion. The most dovish scenario for 2022 is getting post-Covid price surges out of the way in 2021.
Features Axel Kicillof relished the role he played in the Argentine government years ago: the brash left-wing economy minister who clashed at every opportunity with foreign investors. They hated him—and he loved it. Now Kicillof is back in the ring with financiers as governor of Buenos Aires. And 10 months after he halted payments on $7.1 billion worth of bonds, barely any progress has been made in talks. Here's why the enfant terrible has no financial or political incentives to change the situation.
Standard Chartered is putting the finishing touches on a hybrid WFH system that's set to begin in April, but while the nuts and bolts may be all set, the coffee and pastry are not. So the lender is hosting an internal competition among staff to devise ways to reinvigorate the social aspects of office work—like a holographic water cooler. No, really.
By the Way "One more thing." That may have been one of Steve Jobs's favorite catchphrases, but it doesn't belong to Apple. A London judge ruled as such when he sided with Swiss watchmaker Swatch in a long-running dispute over trademarks. Swatch's attempt to register the phrase might have been an attempt to "annoy" Apple, Judge Iain Purvis said, but Apple can't block it from doing so.

2021.03.14 00:45 MetricT "Latinos for Tennessee" = 100% Conservative PAC

There is a cottage industry in giving PACs names that diverge from their actual mission. I enjoy looking for "MOM, APPLE PIE, AND PUPPIES! PAC" that turn out to be something more nefarious.
There is a "Latinos for Tennessee" PAC based here in Nashville. From their website, at first glance you might think they were a non-partisan group supporting the needs of the Latino community. But if you look at their "Mission" page, it's the usual Conservative bullet points: faith, family, freedom, and fiscal responsibility. Not a mention of immigration, education, healthcare, or jobs.
I pulled every single contribution "Latinos for Tennessee PAC" has ever received, and it's 100% from conservatives. For the life of me I cannot find a single Democrat or Democratic-allied organization. The exhaustive list of donors is at bottom, by all means point it out if you see any Democrats there.
But just because their donors were all conservative, does that mean that "Latinos for Tennessee PAC" only donates to conservative causes? Apparently, yes. Here is the complete list of all candidates or PACs they have donated to:
 Recipient.Name Amount ========================================================= 1 TENNESSEE LEGISLATIVE CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE 7850 2 VALLEJOS, TOMMY 7300 3 LEE, BILL 1000 4 MOMS FOR TENNESSEE 1000 5 MONTGOMERY COUNTY REPUBLICAN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 750
"Latinos for Tennessee" donated $750 to the Montgomery County Republican Executive Committee on 2016-02-02:
Amount Date Recipient.Name Contributor.Name ========================================================================================== 1 750 2016-02-02 MONTGOMERY COUNTY REPUBLICAN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE LATINOS FOR TENNESSEE
By an absolutely staggering coincidence, the Montgomery County Republican Executive Committee then gave $750 to Tommy Vallejos:
Amount Date Recipient.Name Contributor.Name ==================================================================================== 1 500 2018-10-22 VALLEJOS, TOMMY MONTGOMERY COUNTY REPUBLICAN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 2 250 2018-10-22 VALLEJOS, TOMMY MONTGOMERY COUNTY REPUBLICAN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
It seems, rather than being a group supporting the TN Latino community, "Latinos for Tennessee" is mostly about creating a slush fund for conservative interests, who judging by their track record are most definitely not supporting the TN Latino community. It may also be used to "rent" some Hispanic supporters for those who need it. They have received $239,600 in listed contributions, but have only spent #17,900 so far, so they have $221,700 sitting around for later.
The treasurer of the group (Troy Brewer) has previously been reported for running attack ads, and also oversees several other conservative PACS, including the "TENNESSEANS FOR GOOD STATE GOVERNMENT" that I mentioned earlier this afternoon.

Last summer I had a new baby and went on a serious horror movie kick that culminated in revisiting the first four Alien movies. I had intended to write about each of them back then but, yknow, new baby. Lately I am revisiting them again. This year I'm going to try to write a bit about each of them, just for kicks. Today, Alien: Resurrection.

I recall a quote from Vulture's review of Solo: A Star Wars Story that was something like "why make a movie centered around a beloved character, but remove all of their memorable character traits?" This fits Resurrection to a T. Sigourney Weaver is clearly having fun playing a cat, basically, but in many ways this is the flip of Alien3. That movie is flawed, but a worthy addition to the franchise particularly because it is true to the Ripley we know and love. Resurrection has a character named Ripley, but she's not Ripley at all. Sure there are plot reasons for this, but why bother including her at all? Why not make Call the main character? (These questions are rhetorical, I know the answer is "money, dear boy!")
At least as offensive are the changes to the behavior of the Aliens themselves. They feel like everything but the iconic Xenomorphs in this film. They ape the behavior of the Raptors from Jurassic Park, turn into sharks at one point, and exhibit neither the stealthy, ambush predator behavior from the original film nor the swarming insect behavior of the second. These iconic creatures change to fit the whims of the scene, and without the clear rules established by the previous films they fail to feel like anything resembling a serious threat. Again, you could handwave this as the result of human splicing, but why make a movie about the Aliens where the Aliens don't act like the Aliens?
I was originally going to start the post by complaining that the credits don't fade in, but a double check reminded me that Alien3 doesn't fade the credits in either. Ok, I'll give it that. But immediately after the credits end the reveal that we are 200 years in the future presages a film full of bad choices. It feels as though this decision is made only so they can explain away the fact that absolutely nothing in this movie looks or feels anything like the previous 3 films. The ship has none of the industrial design of the Nostromo, or the slithery feel of the Nest, meaning there is no opportunity for the tension of Aliens hiding in plain sight. Ripley isn't Ripley, except when she is because of genetic memory. The company is nowhere to be found, the weapons are different, hell even the lighting is different.
Characters? What characters?
In my Alien 3 review, one of my complaints was the anonymity of the inmates and their flat, identical characters. In that movie, you can make the argument that the anonymity is part of the larger theme of an uncaring universe.
Resurrection has no such excuse. The crew of the Betty all speak with the exact same voice, all allegedly witty one liners and edgelord cursing. Other characters, such as Gen. Perez and Pervis, stand out simply because they appear to be ported in from a drastically different movie, one that appears to be a comedy. The villain all but twirls his mustache. In the absence of any character based drama or intrigue there is so, so much yelling.
A few actors do their level best to make an impression. Weaver is at least having fun, as is Ron Perlman. Winona Ryder is a queen, and brings a believable empathy to Call that the movie frankly doesn't deserve. Brad Dourif is my favorite by far, going all in on the role of a doctor who apparently wants nothing more than to fuck a Xenomorph.
The result is a Monkey's Paw of a movie. If you pitched me on those characters in a new Alien film I'd be all in, but the paw curls and gives us this instead.
Nitpicking
I do not consider myself a nitpicker. I often see folks pointing out flaws in things I love, which I am happy to admit are valid. If a work is good, I'll overlook those flaws, or do the work on behalf of the writers in my head.
However this movie is so bad I can't help but notice every ridiculous moment. Why are the mercenaries allowed to wander freely about the ship to encounter secret science experiment and potential threat Ripley in the first place? Why does Ripley play basketball? Why when a later scene takes place in what is clearly the same gym, does a character radio for help "to the mess hall?" I'll grant that the scientists wouldn't have expected the beasts to kill one of their own to escape, but they've studied these creatures for 200 years and didn't spring for an acid-proof cage?
It just goes on and on. The swimming/climbing scene was such a cavalcade of nonsense I lost track of what I hated the most. If your movie is set on a spaceship, you don't need an underwater sequence. They manage to make the facehugger, the scariest part of the franchise for me by far, completely harmless. Christie kill an Alien, gets burned by it's blood, and retains the strength to unbuckle himself from Vriess. But he can't just, like, wiggle his foot a bit so the dead Xeno falls off him? Call is revealed to be an android for apparently no other reason than other characters have been surprise androids in this series. If she was a human who had seen evidence of the Alien threat, it would change the movie in no way whatsoever.
I could go on.
The Newborn
It is impossible to overstate how much I hate the design of the newborn. It is clearly meant to be the ultimate monstrosity, the unholy spawn of Alien and Human, striking terror into the heart of all who cross it's path. I laugh, every second it is on screen. It's face is just so...goofy. It's limbs are awkward and it looks like it can barely walk. The headbulge makes it look like a Twi'lek from Star Wars with cancer. When it flips from puppy dog eyes to anger to unhinged jaw, I can practically see the crew running in to swap out the different puppets.
It's also in the movie for such a short period of time that it fails to make any impact as a threat. It kills an immobile queen who just wanted love, the cocooned Gediman and Tuco from Breaking Bad. It spends the rest of it's screentime yelling at Call, and is blasted out an airlock five minutes after we learned it existed. Could it have made more of an impact if it had some build up? Probably not, this movie is terrible.
An interesting document for Firefly fans
Joss Whedon is persona non grata these days, which I don't feel the need to comment on. There is still a great deal of affection for much of his TV work however, and it is interesting to watch this movie as someone who enjoys Firefly. The crew of the Betty is very clearly a dry run for that show--the married Captain and Pilot, Johner playing the role of Jane, and their general mercenary nature all look like a bad version of the show many of us love.
Joss Whedon has tried to distance himself from the film, saying that while most of the lines are what he wrote, everything in their presentation and delivery was wrong, going so far as to suggest he wrote the movie as a parody. I don't buy it. The one liners and flat action characters feel very much like a young writers idea of what "badass" is, and a knockoff of James Cameron's much more loveable Marines to boot. He was doing ok at this point, with Buffy starting it's run and an Oscar nod under his belt for Toy Story. As the only credited writer, it's tough for him to lay blame everywhere but the script.
Does anything work?
The only scene that works for me with no qualifying statements is the moment when Ripley finds her deformed "sisters." Weaver sells the tragedy of the scene, and the designs are far more horrifying than the Newborn. There is a whisper of a good idea here, a justification for making Ripley a clone, but it's drowned out by all the literal yelling.
The Aliens look good I guess? The close ups of the Xenomorph heads look as good as ever, all smooth and drippy. But the CGI in most of the wide shots looks even worse than the puppet insert in Alien 3.
I guess I appreciate the ultraviolence at times. While the effects in the finale leave much to be desired, It's very upsetting to hear the newborn scream with a human voice as it's guts are sucked out the back of it's head. Purvis' chestburster going through Wren's head as a bonus is a preview of the batshit sensibility of AVP: Requiem. (Spoiler for when I get to writing that one up: I remember liking it!)
In the end this movie is just very, very bad. Every aspect from the flat characters to the cheap set design to the awful new creature design fails. It's not even insane auteur trash like the Star Wars prequels, it's just plain old trash.

An insider's look at how GM, Ventec ramped up ventilator production amid COVID-19

Courtesy of https://ventecgm.com/
With ventilators in short supply and U.S. COVID-19 cases first surging in mid-March, the coronavirus pandemic gave rise to a cross-industry partnership pairing automaker General Motors with Seattle area medical device company Ventec Life Systems.
Ventec, a small medtech founded in 2012, was operating at full capacity in March producing a few hundred units per month to meet the urgent need for ventilators but lacked the resources and infrastructure to increase production on a massive scale. That's when GM stepped forward offering to help Ventec build the sometimes lifesaving breathing devices at the automaker's parts plant in Kokomo, Indiana.
Within a month, the first ventilators jointly produced by GM and Ventec were delivered to hospitals in the Chicago area, according to Dan Purvis, CEO of Houston-based engineering firm Velentium, whose company provided the automated testing systems to ensure the ventilators worked as designed.
Nonetheless, Purvis acknowledged the partnership encountered difficult manufacturing challenges early on as GM worked to ramp ventilator production from zero to 10,000 machines per month.
To state the obvious: GM is not a medical device manufacturer. It makes cars, and the scale and speed for producing the ventilators was unprecedented, Purvis observed. At the same time, he credited GM's expertise in "high-scale" manufacturing and having the purchasing power and resources of a large corporation that are "nearly second to none" as the critical ingredients for an undertaking of this size and scope.
GM and Ventec executives had their first conference calls in mid-March to discuss how the two companies could work together to ramp up production of the ventilators, Purvis recalled. That led to a March 20 face-to-face meeting between execs at Ventec's facility in the Seattle area, only three weeks and nine miles away from the nursing home where the first fatal U.S. cases of COVID-19 occurred, he pointed out during an interview with MedTech Dive.
"Four executives from GM showed up and within the first 30 minutes of them being in the building it was very obvious to me, in my 26-year career, that these people had the resources, the intensity and the intention to make a huge dent in this problem," said Purvis, who attended the meeting at Ventec's Bothell, Washington, headquarters.
Within days of that March 20 meeting, GM had engaged its global supply base, developed plans to source all the necessary parts for the ventilators, and begun preparing the automaker's closed Kokomo facility for retooling to accommodate ventilator manufacturing.
The White House had been preparing to announce the GM-Ventec venture, called Project V, that called for the production of as many as 80,000 ventilators. However, a March 26 New York Times report said federal support for the GM-Ventec partnership was called into question after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) weighed whether the project's $1 billion price tag was too expensive, with several hundred million dollars to be paid upfront to retool GM's Kokomo plant.
After weeks of pressure to utilize the power, President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act (DPA) on March 27.
"GM was wasting time," Trump said in a statement regarding his use of the Korean War-era law to require the automaker "accept, perform, and prioritize federal contracts for ventilators."

2020.03.25 02:15 sammytrailor Covid 19 Craft beer deals - orderbeer.com.au

An industry mate informed me that Northwood Craft Beer (a wholesaleimporter) is opening a "direct to public" beer sales site.
www.orderbeer.com.au
They are feeling the pinch with the pubs closing and have a heap of inventory (and plenty more on the way). So, why not sell it to us cheap!
And I mean cheap.
I've ordered a carton of 3 Fonteinen Cuvee Armand & Gaston (750ml) for $179 - $29 each and they are currently $57 at purvis.
Some Breweries currently being offered:
I'm not affiliated with Northwood in any way, but want to spread the message. Help's them stay afloat and I get great craft beer in return :)
I wonder if any other wholesalers will start doing the same?
