2023.06.08 00:22 thegreatestpitt Animal cruelty in Stephen King works?
So I’m interested in reading the shining, Salem’s lot, pet sematary, revival, cujo, the girl who loved Tom Gordon, dr sleep, and it.
Like, those are the stories by Stephen king that call to me the most (plus Carrie but I’ve already read that), but as someone who absolutely adores animals, specially dogs, im a bit nervous about going in and reading these books only to find scenes that will emotionally destroy me.
In the case of pet sematary, I know the cat dies, I just don’t know how bad his death is, and whether he suffers a lot or not. If the cat dies quickly and mostly painlessly, I don’t have a problem with that.
In cujo I know the dog gets rabies and in the end he dies. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that specific story. I think it might not affect me as much because cujo becomes basically a monster, and it’s like the same idea behind someone you love turning into a zombie. It’s not them anymore, so in my mind, cujo is more like a zombie dog than a sweet Saint Bernard, but idk. Has anyone who loves dogs, read that book? If so, how did it affect you?
Last but not least, I heard there’s a scene in IT where Patrick whetever-his-name-is puts a puppy in a fridge and lets it asphyxiate. Is this true? Does the dog suffer a lot? Is it a quick scene or does it take its time explaining gruesome details like maybe hearing muffled whimpering as the dog begins to die? Is there any other form of animal cruelty in the book? Should I avoid IT if I’m easily triggered by animal cruelty?
As far as the other stories go, I have no idea if there’s animal cruelty in them, and I’d like to know which of these books has animal cruelty, and how much of it is there?
If any of you remember how these scenes play out, and would like to tell me, I’d appreciate it since it doesn’t affect me nearly as much if I know I’m just gonna read that specific scene without all the background. It’s like watching the specific scene of a jump scare knowing that the jump scare is coming. It doesn’t scare you. It’s sort of like that when I know that the scene I’m gonna read is animal cruelty and there’s no background to have made me invested. It doesn’t affect me as much that way.
Anyway, this is turning into a very long post so just thank you all for your help! Have a great day! :)

2023.06.08 00:20 UncommonSimp Is Aqua obsessed or is he in love with Kana?
Is Aqua in love or is he in love with Kana?
Well, I'mma try and answer this question, And you can figure it out by yourself. I personally think
he was in love with Kana in the beginning and may have some lingering feelings towards her. And despite his spiral rn, I still think AquaKana has a chance.
So, Let's start in the beginning. The way he looks at her. I love the Panels where Aqua looks at Kana awestruck, as if he is in trance by her. Alot people tend to think he only looked at her like that because she is an idol. (refrencing C40) However, I don't think this the case. While I do think it's true, He does idolize her but I think it's because she is honest with him.
And I think He admires her for it. First time we see him Awestruck by Kana, was in
Chapter 15, But, I think he was surprised that Kana is asking him to do something straight forward.
https://preview.redd.it/09a9ylnnon4b1.jpg?width=1350&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69cde48e63757bee77609862921e06bcec52cbd7 The second we see him look at Kana this way, is when she shines while performing.
https://preview.redd.it/r96bcziyon4b1.jpg?width=1300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=320f81c89c50840466245557e45558e028088617 I love this moment, Kana clearly draws his attention. Which is interesting because that's the type of girl he likes.
Balcony moment: When Kana was well depressed because he started "dating" Akane. (well, Fake dating her) And Kana was avoiding him. He dressed up like Piyeon to talk to her. They have a casual conversation where he helps and supports her and they don't like peppers.
https://preview.redd.it/ycvsvokyrn4b1.jpg?width=1300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93efab50fd1711e156df75d87439f953415d162e I really wonder what face was Aqua making that mask, Was he looking at her in a very endearing way? like he did in (Chapter 50 ) You can tell it is one of his happiest moments (Referencing another chapter) I think he is very comfortable with Kana because their are no lies or ulterior motives when she is talking to him. Which I think makes their conversations more genuine and real.
https://preview.redd.it/hqyey5nyqn4b1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=b19255b5435b22fed7a313aa82a297f764cc63cc

It's like he is back in his "old self" The self that wasn't traumatized by Ai's death. https://preview.redd.it/bsccjpccsn4b1.png?width=671&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1d22064340fc10d761d56679b2ab3d57049b6f0 And look at his eyes, I love how their are the same eyes, when he realized his "dad" was dead. I just find that detail to be very interesting it represents. I guess what Ruby is saying.
https://preview.redd.it/qr4x4ua4tn4b1.png?width=994&format=png&auto=webp&s=24775d34546bd46d7d40080d7a358d069f190f09 (Chapter 73) It's very interesting because they are the same eyes, that were shown in Chapter 40 when he is talking to Kana. Chapter 50 is also very interesting, Right After Kana, Made this comment.
https://preview.redd.it/b3ggyghrtn4b1.png?width=994&format=png&auto=webp&s=190804f7fb8326b90b59cd965303c4154c01eeca Which is not her fault because she did not know Ai was his mom. To her Miyako was his Mother and Aqua understood this. So can you guys quit taking this scene out of context to pain Kana as a bad person? Please? But what I want to focus on is when she tells about "Happy memories"
https://preview.redd.it/59zlmcoztn4b1.jpg?width=1083&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c618cf3033fc267770a2759101d7e4bd1e333c1e

https://preview.redd.it/qek480u8un4b1.jpg?width=1083&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69c3a45cb18c17bb18a76afcae9908aec0b0b03c Aqua, the man whose Romantic feelings are pretty ambiguous throughout the story, Even when he is with Akane. Is out here blushing because a girl told him to think about happy memories. On top of that she gets a whole panel to herself. In his state of thinking about happy memories. Akane made him blush too, when she acted like Ai, But Kana just did it on her own.
Honestly, Someone please take this scene, and Have Kana say this, "he got flustered just because I flattered him a little? honestly, he's so easy to manipulate" ( yeah the copium is very strong) While dating Akane: Even when this man was dating Akane, For real, (After he realize he can't date Kana because she's an idol)
He went and Had a melt down to Memcho, And Memcho thought he was obsessed or fixated with Kana (Depending on the translation you read)
https://preview.redd.it/o4tqqpw3yn4b1.png?width=1185&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e7b0458c0efdaeb42c04ffeb3c138b48766b957 He is not avoding her because he wants too, he is avoiding her because of trauma.
In Chapter 87, Akane noticed he was smitten by Kana.
https://preview.redd.it/sxp0vsgfyn4b1.png?width=1160&format=png&auto=webp&s=9f4b6e077072dff46700bfe1fe3b131c21ab2efe Like damn, that's rough buddy, noticing your bf, being smitten by another girl. But atleast he was loyal and was a good boyfriend to her.
He does appreciate and cares for Akane though, I haven't heard a single "I love you" from this man.
Post break-up After breaking up with Akane. this man still feels something for Kana.
https://preview.redd.it/xtphijuq2o4b1.jpg?width=1137&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24a13fd4e7b5734f644fe2f65ff057bd1bad2f58 In his mind, he doesn't deserve her straight gaze. I find it very interesting how his feelings for Kana, are tied in closely with his happiness (chapter 50), trauma and self hatred.
But, I also think his happiness is also tied in with Akane too.
And then later outted the secret with of Ai, so, the scandal about Kana won't be published. (Although I think it was all part of his plan to break his relationship with Ruby) Because of his self destructive plan.
https://preview.redd.it/vgkultfe4o4b1.png?width=1148&format=png&auto=webp&s=34858961ba56067bc423f1338cd81d368f9fa29d And then all shit goes to hell in Chapter 108, But, I also find it very interesting how he single Kana out, And then comes "..If I must" to me, If he has to and it will help with his plan then yeah he would do it. But, it doesn't sound like he wants too. In fact, I don't think he wants to do this plan but self blame and Hatred are stronger then how he actually feels.
So, is it obsession or Love?
I'm a go with Love,
- Simply because an obsessed person would never seperate themselves from the person they are obsessed with.
- obsession makes you is selfish, But Love makes you selfless.
- Obsessive people control, (the worst Aqua has done aside from chapter 117, Was when he got to be an idol)
Their relationship is so complex and interesting. Even if they don't have that much moments with the other. Maybe after this arc, That's when their relationship would probably start to developed, Depending how this arc goes down because Aqua is toxic. right now. Kana deserve better. If Aqua and Kana are going to be endgame, then I hope Aqua steps up his game. And learn to be more honest with Kana, and forgives himself instead of blaming and hating himself. I do think their is some hope for this relationship, Since in Chapter 101, She says that she sees him as a friend. (so depending how this arc ends, Maybe it could work)
But, I hope Kana continues the Tsundereness for this arc, Because that can actually protect her from a red flag.
Anyways, what r ur thoughts opinions?

0. The Cosmic Judge and the Delivery Man
Thomas Morell, stepped through the transit gate with a yawn, cradling an oversized GUPS box in his arms. The large box impeded most of his view, but as the transit gate snapped shut behind him, Thomas noted that something was clearly amiss with his destination.
Looking down, he saw that his boots were buried in black ashes. The air tasted stale and dusty. Thomas lowered the box slightly and saw that he was standing amidst desolate ruination, a landscape ravaged by an unknowable cataclysm that had devastated planet Sintash.
"Well," he muttered with airy enthusiasm rivaled only by the charisma of a drying doormat. "This is just peachy."
Like a protagonist in search of plot, Thomas slowly meandered over to a charred, half-incinerated wall which, upon close inspection, yielded the faint inscription of "12/5 Stafford Street."
Obeying the bureaucracy of his vocation, functioning mostly on autopilot mode Thomas situated the cardboard box amid the pile of blackened ashes. As if that wasn't enough, he lovingly placed it adjacent to a wide-open hole that bore an uncanny resemblance to a doorway completely devoid of a door. Satisfied at last, Thomas captured a photograph of the tragically uninspired arrangement with his wrist bracelet device.
"Package confirmed at delivery location," the omnipresent voice of his wrist companion chimed with far too much cheerfulness which seemed completely out of place in the currently apocalyptic circumstances.
Thomas exhaled tiredly as he stood amidst the debris of cities, oceans, trees, and, indeed, the now vaporized dreams of the former denizens of Sintash, all reduced to elemental carbon. His shoulders slumped. He was there simply to deliver the package and not to ask questions, he reminded himself. Whatever happened here was far too big for him to deal with. He would have to file a report about this issue when he got back and someone more important would have to deal with this mess.
“Please obtain the signature of the recipient,” the bracelet on the delivery man's wrist suddenly chimed with a feminine voice.
“Recipient is not available,” Thomas deadpanned.
“Have you tried knocking?” The merry voice of the bracelet prodded him on.
“There’s no door to knock on,” Thomas replied. “Lizz, I’m pretty sure that everyone on Sintash is dead.”
“Please knock on the door and attempt to acquire a signature,” his robotic companion insisted.
Thomas rolled his eyes, stepped through the ashes and knocked on the blackened wall. The wall wobbled ever so slightly and careened forward. Thomas jumped back just as the last remaining wall of 12/5 Stafford Street fell and shattered into dust and cracked bricks.
“There’s nobody home,” Thomas insisted. “On account that everyone on the bloody planet is bloody dead! Portal me back, you stupid AI, I'm not getting paid overtime for this shit.”
“Please remain calm,” Lizz recommended. “Allow the recipient some time to approach the door.”
A 5 minute timer flashed on the delivery man’s bracelet with an animated picture of an old person walking down a stairwell.
Thomas gritted his teeth. The way Lizz was acting was entirely his fault. Normally the AI system was highly intelligent and understood emergency situations like this, but he had used her to pass the boredom in the exactly the wrong sort of ways which was frowned upon by the Good Directorate corporation. His repeated advances and numerous attempts to go around the AI’s censorship filter had kicked the filter to the highest possible setting which in turn made Lizz stupider than a potato.
Thomas sat down on the ash covered steps and stared at the desolate landscape waiting for the timer to clear.
He spotted something ambling in the distance towards him, which made him exceptionally nervous as it approached.
The thing ambling towards Thomas could be best described as a stick figure, an impossible, vaguely person-like thing that was decidedly not human.
“Emergency situation!” Thomas yelled into the bracelet. “Gate out!”
“Please allow the recipient some time to approach the door. A signature is required for this package,” Lizz said, ignoring the rising panic in the delivery man’s voice.
At that moment, Thomas regretted using the "emergency situation" routine to portal to the Skeleton Coast of Africa for his lunch breaks.
“Fuck my life,” Thomas hissed as the freaky stick figure drew closer to him. It didn’t have a face or a head. A thin, two-dimensional pyramidal structure sat atop of the two dimensional neck. It wobbled and folded into itself akin to an infinite fractal. It had three legs, moved more like a spider and an indeterminate number of whip-like, flickering arms.
“Please do not swear,” Lizz commented. "Your behavior is unfitting that of a Good employee."
Thomas had nothing on him, nothing in the pockets of his GUPS uniform except for a pad with a digital pen. He had no weapon to fight off whatever abomination was ambling towards him through the ashes. Sintash was supposed to be a perfectly mundane delivery! It was a terraformed, perfect, manufactured world with no wars, no predators, no diseases, no parasites and definitely no whatever the hell that thing was!
Feeling dread rising in his chest Thomas tore the enormous package open, hoping that something inside would aid him.
[Thank you for buying the world-end survival kit!] A letter declared within the box.
“Yes!” Thomas growled. His eyes went lower.
[Contents: 2000 dry meals, just add water.]
Thomas reached into the box, his hand automatically pulling out a single plastic bottle containing dry powder. The stick figure abomination was almost upon him. He threw the bottle at it.
The hand of the stick figure shot through the air and grabbed the bottle with unnatural, uncanny grace. It unscrewed the cap and shook the dry contents, absorbing them with its fractal-pyramid face.
Thomas fished another bottle out and held it in front of him like a lifeline, not sure what to do next. He didn’t understand what he was even looking at. The entire stick figure was composed of… something inexplicable, akin to constantly moving ferromagnetic fluid that rapidly folded into itself. The sight made his eyes water.
“What are you?” He uttered as he watched the stick figure finish devouring the powder.
“I am Zedix̶̪̘͐̕ͅx̴̖͓͎̾̓͂į̶̍͝s̷̪̅̏s̶̬̘͛̕h̸̨͖͖͑̽̌t̴̪͉͘ą̶̹̓͂͝v̵̧͇͔̂͋i̴̛̮͆͝b̷̬̝̥̍a̴̼̮͒r̷̢̗̺͋ư̸̱̬͈̔s̸̡̝̫̗̭̋͐͗̑͆ǐ̶͇̝͝a̶̹͛͒̚h̸͙͓̓̽͋͠,” the answer came.
The end of the sentence was made from incomprehensible sounds that reverberated inside the skull of the delivery man, giving him a blinding migraine. Thomas tried not to heave, his mind unable to process the name for a few seconds.
“I’m… urhgh. I don’t think that I could repeat that,” he said finally. “I’m… going to call you Zed, if that's alright with you.”
“Ṯ̷̆h̴̨̊i̷̥̾s̴͔̈́ ̸̂͜i̸̱̾s̸̼̿ ̴̟͘a̴̢̍c̷͙͘c̷͚͐ē̶͖p̷̡̒t̵̺͛a̸̱̍b̵̢̿l̴͙̄ę̷̆,” the fractal stick figure rambled, its voice made from static and a million other voices and sounds that clashed with each other in a barely-comprehensible cacophony.
“What are you?” Thomas repeated his question, trying to put his best 'first contact' face on. “An… alien? Some kind of machine? An AI that survived? You sound… freaky. It’s… exceptionally difficult for me to understand you.”
“I am an echo of the cosmic boundary of the song of the stars,” the thing repeated in Thomas’ own voice. "Using this limited method of vibrational communication and dimenshionality, I am what your fellow multicellular kin could best describe as the observer causality event horizon paradox manifestation."
“Marginally better, even if I have no idea what any of that means,” Thomas sighed. “Although... I would prefer you not using my voice.”
“Please attempt to acquire a signature from the recipient one more time,” Lizz chimed from Thomas’ bracelet.
Thomas put the bracelet on mute mode.
“Is this better?” the stick figure asked in the overly-cheerful voice of Lizz.
“Good enough,” Thomas nodded, trying not to stare at the folding fractals that made his head hurt. “What happened here?”
“I happened,” the stick figure being replied. “The denizens of this world that called themselves the Portal Management Research Institute created a microscopic white hole, through which I stepped into this plane. I have judged the local life and found myself beset by containment barriers which disagreed with my existence. I have obliterated all organic life on this cosmic sphere as I have judged it... bothersome.”
“I… see,” Thomas rubbed his scruffy beard. “Now what? Are you going back into the white hole?”
“That is not how white holes work,” Zed said.
“So... you’re stuck here?” Thomas raised an eyebrow.
“Affirmative,” Zed affirmed. "I shall persist here until the white hole comprising my core burns away."
"How long would this take?" The delivery man asked.
"Approximately one hundred of your years," Zed replied. "Unless I vaporize an entire planet's worth of organic life daily."
“How do you know how to speak English?” The now somewhat less nervous GUPS delivery man asked.
“I have studied the remnants of your communication devices,” the stick figure replied.
“Fair enough,” Thomas nodded. “What’s your plan now?”
“I am currently judging you, human,” Zed said.
“And?” The delivery man arched an eyebrow.
“I find you acceptable,” the fractal stick figure commented.
“That’s nice,” the delivery man exhaled. “I’m Thomas.”
“I find you acceptable, Thomas,” Zed repeated. “You shall serve as my emissary across the local cosmos as I judge all that I see.”
“What do I get out of it?” Thomas asked, sensing that he’s just been inadvertently burdened with some sort of an incomprehensible mission, which would likely result in the genocide of countless inhabited worlds.
“What do you desire in exchange for serving as my emissary… Thomas?” Zed asked, the cheerful female voice which the cosmic abomination now used clashing with its grand declarations.
Ideas rushed through the head of the GUPS delivery man. Wealth, power, love, immortality? What could this cosmic, alien judge even provide him? Was he really willing to become the Silver Surfer, a herald for a Galactus-like alien abomination that could end planets with a snap of its fingers?
Thomas opened and closed his mouth struggling for words. He felt that if he screwed this up, pissed Zed off like the people in charge of Sintash, all of humanity could face extinction.

2023.06.08 00:17 viewtoathrill Spartacus (1961)
2023: Post #151 Watched May 30th On the Criterion Channel (
Spine 106)
IMDB Directed by: Stanley Kubrick Written by: Dalton Trumbo, Novel by Howard Fast TSPDT: 958
197 minutes. Although the movie colors within all the lines of a massive Hollywood blockbuster, it was fascinating to see how Kubrick and Trumbo were able to sneak in so much homosexual subtext through oysters and snails.
One critique I have heard of this film was that it feels like Kubrick took the money but barely tried as a director. I’m sure that’s not fair, especially as there are some creative fight sequences and beautiful set pieces. But even if that is true in part, the inclusion of an honest representation of Roman sexual mores, along with Kirk Douglas’ decision to hire blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, all make for a really cool piece of history.
It’s the story of an imprisoned and enslaved people that band together and conspire to take on the Roman empire in the name of securing their freedom. There are no true systems of hierarchy for the rebels, no pure level of government. In place is a community of like-minded folks that feed and care for each other and fight for the group when needed. Many of them were previously gladiators, so they are physically strong and good in battle. But this is not a story of 100 against 10,000 or a story with a happy ending for the rebels.
This is a story of the power of an idea. Spartacus and his followers are all driven by the notion of freedom, the foundational belief they are equal to Romans. Once this idea is in their minds it becomes impossible to live any other way. So, by default it becomes easy to die for the idea as well. It’s a protest film at heart, following a group of people that will never win but refuse to give into the majority of the population just because they’re outnumbered.
It’s a beautiful concept, and executed well. My main issue is I felt the runtime because they played the story beats very safe. It’s still a good movie, but not great for me despite loving the themes and behind the scenes aspects.

2023.06.08 00:16 ralo_ramone An Otherworldly Scholar [LitRPG, Isekai] - Chapter 11
The Great Hall stood tall against the cloudy day, expelling white smoke from the multiple chimneys on its thatched roof. The outer walls made of a dark gray stone and the overall brutalistic style of the building, gave the Great Hall a certain ‘Big Bad Evil Guy’s lair’ vibe. Upon further inspection, I noticed traces of mana weaved in between the stone which made me wonder if the whole building had some sort of protecting enchantment in place. It made sense considering the whole town was a bastion between the Farlands and the Ebros Kingdom.
Despite my initial assessment of the city, Farcrest’s marketplace flourished all around me. Food, weapons, tools, all kinds of crafting ingredients. No matter what direction I looked I found new things to identify. Other than the abandoned northern district, the city looked like a bustling trade center.
I continued walking through the street market towards the Great Hall.
Red banners with the Marquis crest, a man killing a wolf with a lance, hung from the inner walls. The gate was guarded by a small contingent of soldiers dressed in shiny armor and armed with long albarests. I was tempted to use [Identify] on them but remembering Elincia’s reaction, I refrained from doing it. I didn’t want problems before even starting my life in this world.
As I reached the closed gate, a guard blocked my path.
“What is your business in the Marquis’s Great Hall?” The guardsman asked, glancing at me with unfriendly eyes. The man inspected my appearance from head to toe and he didn’t seem to like what he was seeing. My clothing was humble to say the least.
“My name is Robert Clarke, Scholar from the City of Light. I’m here for a passage permit into the Kingdom of Ebros.” I said with a haughty voice. A good teacher was, in essence, a good actor, and I took pride in my classroom management.
As expected, my words seemed to pique the guard’s interest.
“Farcrest isn’t a border town, Scholar. How did you even enter the kingdom?”
The guard was unsure if he was really talking to a commoner or someone of high birth. Or maybe he thought I was a high level individual? It made sense that people with higher levels looked down on the weaker.
Considering Elincia’s reaction to the story about the teletransportation, I decided to continue with the same lie. If I had to guess, portals weren’t all strange in this world.
“A magic accident teleported me into the Farlands. There I was picked up by an Alchemist harvesting ingredients who brought me here to Farcrest.” I explained with a serious tone.
“Should’ve said that from the very beginning… sir. Portal magic is no joke.” He stuttered.
The guard swallowed the story.
“It is not.” I nodded.
The guard must’ve assumed I was the one responsible for the portal incident because his demeanor changed instantly. If I had to guess, portal magic was a high level technique.
“This way, sir.” The guardsman said, guiding me through a lateral door at the base of the wall and into a narrow and dark corridor. As much as I wanted to enter through the main gates, I assumed it wasn’t worth opening it for a single person.
We emerged into a cobbled courtyard by the side of the Great Hall where a small army of workers unloaded carts with crated goods under the attentive glance of an overseer. Regrettably, I couldn’t tell what was inside the heavy boxes.
“Trade seems to be healthy considering Farcrest is a frontier town.” I pointed out in a vain attempt to make the guard talk.
“It’s been that way for a while now.” He sparsely replied as we walked to a wooden building attached to the Great Hall. Outside the building, an angry middle aged woman dressed in a gambeson with the Marquis emblem was training a group of fresh recruits who barely knew how to hold a sword. The kids couldn’t be much older than Zaon.
Instead of walking towards the building, we approached the training group.
The soldier saluted and the woman knight raised her hand, stopping the frenetic swinging of the recruits. Her eyes were of a stark gray color and her lips were a fine line under her aquiline nose. Her skin was tanned and covered in small scars of a hundred battles. [Awareness] told me she was the don’t-fuck-with-me type.
“Captain, this man says he arrived at Farcrest via failed teleportation.” The soldier explained my situation.
“Another one?! I can’t believe this is the second time this year.” The Captain chastised the soldier as if it was his personal fault. Then, she turned around to face me. She was taller than me and her rolled up sleeves not only revealed lean and bulking muscles but a skin covered in scars. Those weren’t fashionable superficial scars but ones which distorted the skin and muscle.
“Tell me you are not from the Ansan Kingdom. It will cost us a small fortune to send you back.” The Captain said.
I understood that was my cue to speak.
“My name is Robert Clarke, a Scholar, and you don’t need to send me back to my homeland, Captain. I am more interested in traveling to the Imperial Library than returning.” I said with a small bow.
“I’m Captain Izabeka Kiln, leader of the city guard. I like you already, Scholar. People who complicate things are too common in these places.” The captain left the bundle of parchment and walked around the table to inspect me closely.
I made a mental note to not complicate things in front of the woman.
“Come on.” The captain left the group of disoriented recruits behind and walked towards the Great Hall. “We have to ensure you don’t have any suspicious hidden titles before giving you your passage permit.”
“Hidden titles?” I asked with a tremble in my voice.
“You have not been in a System Shrine before?” The Captain looked over her shoulder and gave me a confused glance.
I shook my head. Hidden titles could mean two things; there was a method to hide one’s titles from being identified or there were titles that could only be unlocked at a System Shrine. The second option made sense considering the lack of progress my class had even after twelve levels.
“I warn you, Robert Clarke, I’m a level fifty seven Knight, if you do try anything stupid I’ll crush your spine before you could even blink.” The captain said before addressing the guard who had guided me there. “You, maggot, look after the Scholar’s belongings. He is my guest.”
“Yes, ma’am.” The soldier said, extending his hand to me.
I gave him my backpack and nobody questioned the suspicious wooden shotgun butt protruding out. I felt naked without my weapon, however, the shells were safe inside my pocket.
“You don’t have a suspicious title do you?” The captain asked as we entered a beautifully adorned corridor with painted murals and ornamental banners hanging from the ceiling. The decoration was surprisingly tasteful.
I swallowed hard.
“I don’t think so?” I replied, remembering what Elincia had told me about locked titles.
We walked in silence through a carpeted corridor. The brass-framed windows reached the high ceiling and gave us a wide view of the interior gardens. There was a bush maze, fountains and clumps of all kinds of flowers.
We reached a glass door to a crowded balcony and the captain signaled the guards to let us through. On the balcony there were men and women dressed in expensive suits and dresses of vibrant colors. Broad rings of gold and precious stones adorned the noble’s hands while the women flaunted beautiful necklaces and earrings. If the Marquis was there, he was hidden among the crowd.
Captain Kiln took me to the side of the balcony, far from the noble clump and pointed down to the garden. Two men dressed in fencing attire were standing at opposite sides of the garden while the squires helped them with their padded jackets. In the middle of the fighting area an old man with braided hair and stern look acted as the referee.
“Have you witnessed a judiciary duel before?” The captain asked.
I shook my head.
“Then it’s your lucky day, Scholar. Sir Janus insulted Baronette Tirno during the last feast.” Captain Kiln said with a lupine smile.
“What did Sir Janus say?” I inquired.
“Janus said Tirno’s lovers during their days in the Ebros Knights Academy looked just like his mother.” Captain Kiln let out a tired sigh.
I glanced down at the dueling area. Baronette Tirno was a tall and slender young man of blonde curls and piercing looks. He wore a blue and black jacket with a crest similar to the Marquis symbol, so I assumed he might be related to the Marquis. Tirno moved with ease under the padded jacket and made a flourish with his rapier before blowing a kiss to the balcony. The gesture was answered by a wave of giggles and sighs.
For someone with a soiled honor, he was enjoying the moment.
Sir Janus, on the other hand, was a brutish looking man with the physique of a beer barrel. An unkempt bristly black beard covered his face and his small black eyes resembled the ones from a pig. Janus looked more like a well-armed murder hobo than a knight.
“Tirno has the reach advantage.” I said as the squire handed the rapiers to Janus.
“Good, you can use your eyes.” Captain Kiln said and I wondered if every woman had a similar level of sass in this world.
The referee, an old man dressed in a white and yellow tunic, stood at the center of the arena and cast a spell creating a golden dome of twenty meters in diameter. A second later the dome became translucent, barely blocking the view of the duelists.
“He’s a Fortifier. Any skill used inside the area of the bubble should stay inside instead of killing you. Well, none of them have magic classes but with high level combatants any extra precaution is welcome.” Captain Kiln explained.
Down inside the bubble, Tirno and Janus walked five paces away from the center, turned around, and saluted with the rapiers. Then, they adopted a fighting position I wasn’t completely familiarized with. It seemed they were going to start sprinting instead of fencing.
A sudden gust of wind rose, kicking up a dust cloud, and Tirno disappeared just to reappear by Janus’ flank. I gasped. Had he used a skill or was it his natural speed? Janus raised his sword and parried just in time. Then I noticed my mouth was wide open.
“Want to bet?” Captain Kiln asked with an entertained expression on her face.
“I don’t have money or valuables other than a quarter cheese wheel.” I babbled back, too entranced with the fight to pay attention to the woman.
The captain slid a silver coin down the railing and left it in front of me. I recognized a gambling addict that shouldn’t be gambling when I saw one. I glanced at the coin and then I looked down at the arena. The duelists were still testing each other. Baronette Tirno had an elegant style with quick transitions and nimble footwork. Sir Janus, on the other hand, stood like a heavy boulder in the middle of the yard.
“Two silver coins and I will tell you exactly how Lord Tirno is going to lose.” I said with a taunting smile.
The captain’s interest was piqued and soon after there were two silver coins in front of me and another two in front of the woman.
“I love to fleece know-it-all Scholars.” The captain said despite the fact she was betting against her own money.
I ignored the banter and focused on the duel. After the initial explosion of speed things had slowed down. Still, they moved faster than any HEMA practitioner or olympic fencer I had seen in my life.
I remembered Zaon talking about class growth. It wasn’t a surprise that the kid was apprehensive of becoming a Soldier when there were classes that could move like those two men. Not even with my Lv.5 [Swordsmanship] was enough to reach those speeds.
[Awareness] filled my brain with information. Tirno fought with deliberately elegant movements trying to find an opening on the opponent’s defense while Janus adopted a style similar to what I knew; he tried to control Tirno’s sword and deliver a strike without jeopardizing his own safety.
“Sir Janus is going to end the fight by stabbing the Baronette in the hand.” I calmly said, channeling all my fencing knowledge. Judicial fencing wasn’t about killing your opponent, although it happened frequently, but about incapacitating it before it could harm you.
“Alright, I’m going for Tirno.” The Captain said.
The balcony was in complete silence. Rapiers clashed, but none managed to control the weak of the opponent's blade to create an opening. The amount of stamina both men displayed was astounding, even compared to top tier athletes from Earth. If I were to train for a hundred years I could hardly reach their levels of speed and coordination.
Suddenly Lord Tirno put aside all attempts of defending and lunged forward, aiming at the center of Sir Janus’ chest. Sir Janus stepped back with a nimbleness uncharacteristic of a man of his span. To get away from Tirno’s blade, Janus raised both arms and pulled back his body. In that awkward position, Sir Janus counterattacked with a downward stab aimed at Lord Tirno’s hand and withdrew from the engagement to avoid Tirno’s afterblow.
However, the afterblow didn’t come. Lord Tirno’s sword fell to the ground as the man bursted out cursing. As he retreated to his side of the arena, I caught a glimpse of bright blood flowing from his right hand.
New word learned! Words learned: 3,001/215,000 Rank: Talkative Teenager I made a mental note to not mention that word in front of children.
“I lost.” Captain Kiln sighed, bringing me back to the present.
“Not yet, he’s going to continue. Look.” I replied as Lord Tirno’s aid bandaged the wounded hand. The noble man snapped at the squire to hurry up but no matter how much bandages he applied, they quickly soaked in more blood. Suddenly, sick of waiting, Lord Tirno pushed his squire back and retrieved the sword.
“It’s over.” Captain Kiln sighed again.
Down in the garden, Sir Janus repeatedly hit Tirno’s blade until it slipped from his bloody hand. Then Janus prompted his rival to retrieve his sword just to repeat the process. Three times Tirno raised his sword and three times Janus slapped it from his hand.
“What a shitshow.” Captain Kiln grunted just as Sir Janus disarmed Lord Tirno for the last time and chased him across the garden hitting the Baronette’s legs with the rapier’s flat side until he found shelter inside the Great Hall.
Sir Janus took a bow towards the balcony and threw his sword in the squire’s direction. The Captain slid four silver coins to my side of the handrail.
“Better spanked than dead.” I pointed out, pocketing the coins with a winning smile on my face.
“Sir Janus is a lowborn who reached knighthood because he was accepted in the Ebros Knights Academy. His position in the court is frail and yet he acts like an idiot.”
The squires cleared the garden and the nobles who had been observing the duel started vacating the balcony. I learned a couple more insults from overhearing their conversation, some of the nobles were fuming and I pictured them plotting against Sir Janus in the near future. A hurt noble’s ego was dangerous in this world or the other.
“Abei!” The captain suddenly called.
An old robbed man emerged from the group, clearly annoyed by the interruption.
“What is it, captain?”
The man had a shining bald head and a majestically bushy beard. Unlike the young man from the tower, Abei didn’t look like a cheap street magician but a full fledged sage.
“We have one of those portal hoppers. A Scholar.” Captain Kiln announced. “I thought you would be interested.”
In a single sentence, Abei’s face was cleared of all irritation. The old man made his way through the balcony with an eager stride and, unlike the captain, didn’t bother to measure me up with his eyes. Instead he jumped directly to the questions.
“Where are you from and how did you get here, young man?” Abei struck me like the kind of person who would look into a loaded shotgun’s barrel to satiate his curiosity.
“I’m Robert Clarke, humble servant of the City of Light. I arrived here due to a teletransportation accident.” I introduced myself, already expecting what will come next. The questioning.
“The City of Light? Never heard of that place.” Abei stroked his beard and looked around searching for an encyclopedia just to remember he was outdoors.
“And I never heard of Farcrest until I popped out here.” I replied with a shrug.
Abei nodded, understanding my predicament.
“You don’t seem to be scared for someone so far from home.” The man looked me directly in the eye. I was slowly getting used to being questioned.
“Three days in the Farlands is a hell of a cure for fear.” I replied.
The Captain gave me an approving nod. People of this world trusted too much in the System and too little in the common sense.
“Why am I being treated with such deference? I'm nobody after all.” I asked, eliciting a jolly laugh from the old man and I braced myself for a long story.
“People who are exposed to teletransportation spells usually are wealthy, noble or high level, so it's only logical to protect such individuals when the integrity of the kingdoms depends on them.” Abei explained. “Anyway, we need noble witnesses to grant you the permit. Let’s go to the audience room.” The man added as he invited me through the glass door into the Great Hall.
Before I could cross the doorway, Captain Kiln grabbed my arm and stopped me.
“Just don’t do anything stupid and things will go well. Understood?” The woman asked with a stern voice.
“Understood.” I replied, knowing perfectly well that doing stupid things, like jumping heads on into a dangerous world full of magic creatures, was exactly my specialty.

2023.06.08 00:15 mayoCodes My littles wants to go to raves, but I’m worried about exposing them to MDMA and other party favors
I’m (30F) and are decently close to the littles in the family.
I’ve 3 younger cousins (16F, 19F, 18M) and my sister in law is 17F.
They’re all very interested in the rave scene now and I think it’s cause it became more mainstream.
I’d love to introduce them, but am worried about exposing them to party favors. I indulge in them myself, but started when I was 26.
The 18M and 19F are siblings and I’m certain they’ve indulged before (MJ, coke, and who knows what else).
The 16F and 17F may have done MJ before, but for sure they have all drank alcohol.
My question is, how do I enjoy raves with them, but also be cautious of party favors?
Do I educate them on it if they ask and watch over them if they want to try? Or do I clearly say no with a risk of them doing it behind by back and uneducated about the risks.
P.S., they don’t know that I do party favors

2023.06.08 00:13 lautaromassimino Who should have stayed?
I'm the guy who uploaded his version of a rewrite of the show a few days ago, and as I mentioned then, I'm rewatching the entire show for the first time since each season premiered.
Currently I'm in episode 4x02. But I've realized that the further I get with the story, the more I feel like the S4 should have been a total reboot of the cast, and the story of a new generation. And I'm feeling it more than anything now that I've started the S4. Why? Because of how quickly they put Polo's death behind them.
Yes, I understand that the circumstances were completely different from Marina's death, but still, we literally don't see a mention of it again, even though the boy died in Guzmán's arms. And I get that they wanted to just move on with the story, but it feels almost anticlimactic, after what the first death (Marina's) meant. With Marina, we had a scene with photos and goodbye messages outside her locker. HER felt all the more believable. Here we have NOTHING, and it is super illogical because we also remember that his death was called suicide. I understand that our characters want to turn the page, but that does not mean that the rest of the school did too.
So yes, I firmly believe that it would have been much better to let this entire generation go in good shape, and bring in a whole new one in the fourth season. I already said it in another post, where I suggested an idea of having the arrival of the Blancos as protagonists, with Benjamin as a villain and some recent tragedy for them (like making the death of their mother more recent, or something like that).
BUT, considering that that didn't happen, what would you have done? I mean, who would you have chosen to stay? If you had to choose, let's say three characters (not five, that seemed excessive to me) from S1,2&3.
My take would be, maybe, Samuel (because he's the lead), Rebeka (just to give her a decent plot line in season 4), and Caye (seeing only s3, I wouldn't have picked her. But I fell completely in love with the redemption, character development, and the happy ending she had in seasons 4 and 5. She deserves that. If we hadn't had her in those seasons, the character wouldn't be as beloved as she currently is).

2023.06.08 00:08 throwaway06601 Can you get sick from waste/trash/etc being near an AC/HVAC vent?
This is gonna be the most absurd and stupid Reddit post you’ve seen today but hey that’s the namesake of this sub… so long story short, I caught a homeless man shitting right in front of my apartment window (I live in a fairly large apartment building on the ground floor, there’s a strip of landscaped hedges between my window and the street). He left behind a bunch of wet wipes along with everything, and it’s sort of close to my air conditioning/HVAC vent. The vent itself is actually elevated, and the crime scene is below on the ground. I’ve notified my building’s maintenance office about it, but in the meantime my extremely anxious self keeps thinking of crazy scenarios.
Basically, my stupid question is, could that being even near my AC/HVAC vent possibly make me sick somehow, or am I overthinking this?

2023.06.08 00:03 ItalianofromItaly Rewatching Gargoyles as an adult - The Thrill of the Hunt
The episode on Gargwiki. The episode on Ask Greg. How long has it been: it's been four weeks since the previous episode.
So, Xanatos' arrest: as a kid, I loved the fact that his defeat at the end of
Awakening meant something and he didn't just somehow get loose in-between episodes - but as an adult, I kinda have to ask: how the hell did it happen? At the beginning of this episode, Elisa says "I have to tell you, Mr. Burnett, I'm still surprised at being asked back here, seeing as how
I've busted your boss"; shortly afterwards, she clarifies that Xanatos "was only convicted of receving stolen property". Ok, so:
- How did she "bust" him, exactly? Where did she find the proofs? She didn't have a warrant for the Castle or anything in the previous episode, so how did she manage?
- Even assuming there were some legally usable proofs somewhere, how did the second richest guy in the Disney Canon (first being Scrooge McDuck, of course) end up in prison so quickly and easily? When was the last time you saw a rich guy do the same in real life?
Elisa tries for the first time to convince Goliath to leave the Castle; Weisman has some... interesting thoughts about that:
"Goliath is stubborn, even dense and condescending toward Elisa, when she tries to convince him to leave the castle. But I think from his POV, his responses were perfectly natural. Xanatos was banished. The castle was theirs. The concept of ownership was sketchy for the Gargoyles at best, but if they did understand it, they understood it in the "Possession = Ownership" sense. The notion that Xanatos could still "own" the castle after an embarrassing defeat was completely ALIEN to Goliath." ...what?
So the Gargoyles don't understand the concept of "theft"? Between this and the "no-names" thing, no wonder their race is borderline extinct, since they are apparently dumb as f**k; it's either that, or Weisman honestly thinks that's how ownership worked in the tenth century, which, no.
But frankly, that's missing the real point, which is:
WHO THE F**K CARES ABOUT THE TRUE OWNER OF THE CASTLE? The Vikings owned absolutely nothing of it, and that didn't stop them from reducing the Gargoyles to rubble; the real problem isn't that some piece of paper somewhere states that Xanatos is the legal owner of Wyvern, the problem is that there's nothing stopping him from killing the Gargs and Goliath isn't willing to face up to that fact yet. Now, if you want to tell me that Goliath is kidding himself about the Clan's possibilities to stay in the Castle (that's probably the best way to interpret his "You worry too much, Elisa. Xanatos was defeated.
We are safe here." line) that's fine - but don't bring legal ownership into it, because it has nothing to do with it.
The Pack gets introduced, first as a tv show and then in real life: they were apparently meant to be a bit of a
Power Rangers parody (
"We were consciously trying to do a professional wrestling meets (the hated) Power Rangers thing"); as a kid who watched both
Gargoyles and
Power Rangers (don't look at me like that), the thought never crossed my mind. Now that I'm an adult... I still don't see it in any meaningful way. Oh well.
It's a bit weird, seeing the Pack in their first appearance:
- They're all humans here; no mutates, no cybernetic abominations, no Xanatos-faced robots - just five human mercenaries using their skills and an arsenal of unconventional weapons.
- It's the original formation, which will stop existing after this episode.
- Fox is a completely different character here compared to her later appearances; to make it work, you basically have to tell yourself that she's acting throughout the entire episode (at one point she says "We never had it this good" - yeah, because you're totally not the daughter of a multi-billionaire, right Janine?). I'm also pretty sure this is the one and only time she ever wears her Pack uniform.
Lexington deciding to approach the Pack makes sense, between the fact that he's starstruck - without having any prior experience of it, what with the lack of tv sets in medieval Scotland - and the fact that he considers the Pack to be "warriors, just like us!"; plus, as he later says to Goliath, there's no reason why only he can have an Elisa, and moreover "Look, it's not like I revealed all our secrets; I'm not stupid". I just wish the scene went on a bit longer - as it is, we go more or less immediately from "Hi, I'm Lexington!" to "But of course I can bring Goliath to you! It's no problem at all!"
Speaking of which: I love those good old-fashioned death traps at PackMedia Studios, and I love the way the fight develops; here, I pretty much 100% agree with Weisman:
"Action-wise this thing is taut. The Pack just keeps coming and coming. The Gargs never have a chance to catch their breath. And, then, suddenly, they do. And the tables turn fiercely. And the Point of View, as well. We are ALWAYS on the side of the hunted. When it's Goliath and Lex, we get very little of the Pack. Just snatches of them attacking. The gargs struggling to stay alive. But up on that roof, we abruptly switch POV. Suddenly, we're following the Pack. Even, dare I say, sympathising with them. Not that we want them to win. But we begin to identify with them as they battle these strange creatures. I love that." LEX: "I'm never trusting anyone again!"
GOLIATH'S MIND: "Wow. And I thought I was being edgy four episodes ago, when I said I would never trust humans again."
Goliath and Lex hide themselves on a roof which just happens to be full of gargoyle statues - and it's not like they aim for it or anything, they just climb a random building and it's there! A bit too fortuitous, although the sequence itself is great (Hyena just
disappers into nothingness at one point, and we never see her again for the rest of the episode - a veritable WTF and awesome choice).
Fox taking a hostage works fine with the way she's presented in this episode, but not with her later characterization - it's the one time "she's acting a bit" doesn't cut it; Weisman's explanation for it doesn't work for me either:
"Likewise, look at Fox's actions at the end of the episode. Can you imagine Fox in any later episode crudely taking a hostage? It seems like she checked her brain at the door. But it works for me because at that time, she (and we) didn't truly know what an angry gargoyle was capable of. Maybe Goliath would dismember her." It doesn't work for me because:
- If Fox fears Goliath to be a savage beast ready to dismember her, why would she think taking a (human) hostage would stop him?
- Wouldn't Xanatos have told Fox about Goliath sparing him at the end of Awakening?
The fight ends (with a bit of an anti-climax, to be honest) and we're back at the Castle. Goliath quotes Lexington's previous speech about the fact that they need to "search for allies, kindred spirits... and sometimes we must take chances like we did tonight", which is nice - but doesn't quite work for me because we never actually saw the Gargs do those things in later episodes: yes, they collected a few more human friends along the way, but they never actually went
searching for them, unless I'm forgetting something.
We end things with the first Xanatos Tag:
OWEN: "Everything was done as you stipulated, sir. The cable tv was adjusted so that the only program the Gargoyles could see was the Pack's; the Pack received the mysterious envelope of photographs and reacted just as you predicted. A pity nothing else happened according to plan."
XANATOS: "Oh, I wouldn't say that, Owen. Though they didn't know it was me, I created the Pack to be far more than just a tv show; I had to see how good they were. And having underestimated Goliath once before, I needed to know what he was capable of as well. All in all, I'd say the test was most... informative."
Wow. That sucks. There will be some great Xanatos Tags in the future, but the first one's horrible:
- You needed to see what Goliath was capable of? After you saw him smash your Steel Clan robots and emerge unscathed from an air fortress full of armed guards? How are five human mercenaries a bigger challenge than that?
- Using the Gargoyles to test the Pack sounds very unfair to the latter - you don't "test" people by sending them against the biggest threat around.
- The scene becomes even worse in hindsight, once you learn that, because of David's little test, his One True Love ended up in prison; truly, a victory for the ages.
Final verdict: ok. Not one of the best, but ok.
RANKINGS:
- Awakening Part Four
- Awakening Part One
- Awakening Part Two
- Awakening Part Five
- The Thrill of the Hunt
- Awakening Part Three

2023.06.08 00:03 TimeLordHatKid123 Black screen when starting up an rpg maker MV project
This has plagued me for the past few years and I never got around to solving it.
I've tried inserting the fresh files from a new project, I've tried tweaking the title screen image (turning from book to volcano for example), I just don't know why its doing this?
I once had a solution years ago that involved looking at background code behind the scenes in the engine, but I don't remember jack about that, and no longer have access to the person who helped me out.
I just want to be able to test my freakin' game, but it seems like im the only one who suffers this issue without an easy fix. Remember, it starts up on a black screen, no music, no nothing, not even a loading bar or splash screen, just...nothing.
Edit: Same goes for testing battles too, by the way.

Q&A
Q: When will [insert game name here] be cracked?
A: STOP! CrackWatch members are not psychic. Games get cracked by completely ANONYMOUS SCENE GROUPS who don't disclose their progress or plans to the general public so NO ONE knows WHEN and IF a certain game will be cracked.
Q: What are all these NFO thingies? Where do I download?
A: NFOs are text files included with game releases which contain information about the releases. CrackWatch only informs which games have been cracked. To download look for the releases on CS.RIN.RU's forum or torrent websites. Useful websites can be found in The Beginners Guide or PiratedGames's Mega Thread.
Q: WTF is Denuvo?
A: Denuvo is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology used to protect games from being cracked. Games that have Denuvo are harder to crack and usually take much longer. See Pinned Post for a list of Denuvo games.
Q: An update is out, but it includes the base game as well! Can I only download the update without redownloading the entire game?
A: Yes. CS.RIN.RU is your friend.

CrackWatch members are not psychic. Games get cracked by completely **[ANONYMOUS SCENE GROUPS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_scene_)** who don't disclose their progress or plans to the general public so **NO ONE** knows **WHEN** and **IF** a certain game will be cracked. **Q:** What are all these NFO thingies? Where do I download? **A:** NFOs are text files included with game releases which contain information about the releases. CrackWatch only informs which games have been cracked. To download look for the releases on CS.RIN.RU's forum or torrent websites. Useful websites can be found in [The Beginners Guide](/CrackWatch/comments/v60rnq/) or [PiratedGames's Mega Thread](https://rentry.co/pgames-mega-thread). **Q:** WTF is Denuvo? **A:** Denuvo is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology used to protect games from being cracked. Games that have Denuvo are harder to crack and usually take much longer. See [Pinned Post](/CrackWatch/comments/p9ak4n/) for a list of Denuvo games. **Q:** An update is out, but it includes the base game as well! Can I only download the update without redownloading the entire game? **A:** Yes. CS.RIN.RU is your friend.

2023.06.08 00:00 ShelLuser42 [Data API drama] Do we _really_ need them API's? Let's build us a RedditSnooper! - Part 1
| Hi gang! Recap As you may or may not (?) know Reddit has decided to change their policies with regards to the use of their data API's. This has led to an upstir from people who believe that this limitation is going to effectively kill free Reddit apps. For my full explanation & opinion on this please see my previous post. I've been in several discussions and I can only conclude that very few people want to bother with actually learning all the facts about a certain issue and would rather prefer to blindly follow "credible sources". To be honest I'm getting really tired - but also highly amused - with what I can only consider being signs of short sighted people mixed with pure ignorance. Editorial But before I continue I want to make one thing very clear: when I use words like the above I am only directing those towards people who raise their opinion, and then belittle and ridicule those who raise an opposite opinion. While I personally do not agree with all the current "rioting" I'll also be the first to state that I have nothing but respect for those folks who now raise their concern in all this. Because in the end all of this happens because people care about our Reddit platform, and IMO you can only respect that feat. I do. Doesn't mean I agree of course, I think it's getting to ridiculous heights (or depths?). So I figured, why don't I put my money where my keyboard is? ;) Do we really need those Reddit APIs? Boy did I have fun with this one. Yah, I raised this question and got met with so much blatant ignorance regarding the actual functionality that several major development platforms provide these days, now specifically talking about Android, Java and .NET (through the use of C#). Disclaimer: I'm not a professional developer myself. At best I'm a hobbyist who considers himself to be at a level between hobbyist & amateur. I have developed several Java applications in the past though, also for my work, but I was never hired as a full time programmer; I've always been a systems administrator first and foremost which also happens to be my favorite profession. But as you can imagine I do have some experiences within this field. I've worked with Java and C# and been involved in a lot of scripting within environments such as Perl, Unix shells, Typo3 and a very small bit of Python (neglectable but still...). For the record: don't worry if you have no experience with software development yourself, I will make sure to explain myself as I do in most of my writeups. And you should always feel free to ask if you'd like a bit more context. This will be part 1 because I can't spend too much time on my post this evening, but... still wanted to get something started regarding this silly project of mine ;) WHAT is an API?!! Before we can even dive into all this it's important that we know what an API actually is; I've seen plenty of comments written by people who are absolutely clueless about the matter yet still managed to form a strong opinion about the issue at hand. API stands for Application Programming Interface which basically means so much that it can act as an interface between two software environments; often used to make access to the software at hand a lot easier. Let me show you an example: Ableton Live, with an opened Max for Live device. So here you see Ableton Live which is simply put an audio program: something which I can use to make and process (digital) audio. One of Live's key features is Max for Live: a visual programming environment which is fully geared towards multimedia purposes. Simply put: this is a programming environment which specifically provides features which allow me to create my own Live instruments & audio / MIDI effects. Or to process MIDI, audio or video data and when used like this I can even control Live itself. However, controlling Live requires knowledge of some specific details; like how to 'reach' the sections you want to control for example. Because these interactions can become quite complicated the team behind Max for Live ("M4l") has developed so called API's which can be used for easier access, you can see one in the screenshot above. Firing up a Live clip So what are we looking at here? My goal is to start a so called clip; in specific I want the clip which I've currently highlighted to start playing the very moment when I click on that round icon you see at the top of the M4l window. Not just this specific clip: ANY clip which is highlighted at that specific moment. All it really takes is 4 objects: a live.path object which references said highlighted clip, a command to start the clip (the "call fire" node), the actual representation of the object I'm trying to control: this is the live.object node and finally: "t b l": this object is used to trigger the whole lot; in other words it sets my little M4l device in motion. On the right side of my M4l window you can see an object called "M4l.API.FireSelectedClip" and on the right side of my screen you see the contents of this node. This is the so called API which I mentioned earlier. As you can see it uses a lot more interactions than I actually need. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing mind you. Especially because the official API does a whole lot more than merely firing up that clip, as you also may be able to make out from reading its descriptions. It takes other situations into account too, for example when someone has selected a track which doesn't even have any clips. But fact of the matter is still that the API provides us with a lot of overhead, something we don't always need and may not even want: overhead in processing also results in extra delays, no matter how small they are. Most of all: as you can see we don't really need to use this API to make things work for ourselves! And believe it or not but that applies to much more situations. Sure things will be easier and quicker to set up when we use the API, no arguments there, but that doesn't change the facts at hand. Reddit is still a website! And you really don't need to register for any Data API's in order to access it. Your browser is proof of that. And if your browser can pick out specific data, why wouldn't we be able to do so as well? What data you ask? Well... I decided to do a bit of research and because of all the above (me not being a veteran programmer?) I'm going to start small. How about... the currently trending items? Chromium's developer tools within Edge. So before we can do anything at all we need to know what we're up against. And isn't this kinda ironic? When Microsoft decided to start using the Chromium framework to further develop their Edge browser I was somewhat disappointed because at that time Edge was pretty much one of the few remaining browsers outside of the "Google tentacles". But I have to admit that this also comes with some advantages ;) Once again: what are we looking at? Well, if you open a website you're basically looking at a so called web or HTML page. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language and this basically implies that the data at hand... uses markup code. Roughly comparable what we use on Reddit to format our text (but not exactly of course). HTML pages often use segments to separate parts of its contents. Use of these segments can also make it easier to dynamically build up your webpages; for example through the use of... yes, absolutely: a programming language. So I started digging, and look what I found? The div section with the id "TrendingPostContainer" is the section I'm after: this one contains all the trending posts (duh!), something you can also see from the above highlight. Next problem: but how do we identify the actual trending posts themselves? Well... Reddit's trending carousel. See above ;) Now we need to look for a div section which id starts with "Carousel-". Once there are no more div sections with this id within the main div section then we have everything we need. This isn't shown in my screenshot (this will come in Part 2) but there is a lot of useful data within this "Carousel div". You're an idiot and don't know what you're talking about if you think parsing a webpage is doable! Just one of the fun comments I got during my discussions. As said, my time is limited right now but trust me: we're going to further look into this later and discover for ourselves who the real idiot exactly is within all this. But every good story needs a cliffhanger these days so I guess I should briefly address this one comment just a little bit. See, a programming environment like C#.NET provides native support for web browsing through use of the System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser class. And it only gets better: the HTMLDocument class provides us with a so called method (more on those in Part 2) which is called: GetElementById. Three guesses what that might do? " But Shell... sorry, but... you do realize that this discussion is all about mobile apps? Android? What does this have to do with anything?!!" Now, sure, I am not very familiar with Android myself but am with some of its general features. Such as, for example, Android's webkit: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/package-summary As well as it's webview class: https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/views/layout/webapps How hard it is to actually retrieve a webpage? (edit: retrieving, no filtering just yet!) Need I say more? End of Part 1 submitted by ShelLuser42 to u/ShelLuser42 [link] [comments] |
2023.06.08 00:00 Thimblesage MTG NBA reimagining set is not what you think, get over it.
| NBA, though widely (and rightly) considered one of the greatest sports leagues of all time, doesn't do so great on the whole diversity thing. In fact, pretty much the only non-black representation in the league is limited. Leaving aside deeper, more probing questions into the league's philosophy on race, this clearly presents a problem for a company like Wizards of the Coast when it comes to creating the MTG NBA set. MTG NBA - artwork of the card Reprieve, showing Leo da vinci Wizards has made plain its commitment to diversity, and done an increasingly good job representing a wide variety of different kinds of players on MTG cards, through iconic figures like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. And so it shouldn't surprise anyone that Magic: The Gathering's interpretation of the NBA has a good deal more diversity than most versions of the franchise. In particular, one of the most well-known legends, Michael Jordan, is depicted as a white man. But, just like when NBA show dared to present viewers with a white player, a rotten subsection of so-called fans are raising a big stink about this. Comments on the recent Magic livestream where the card was revealed were particularly poisonous, and mods on the MTG subreddit soon locked the card's thread because "productive discussion largely ain't happening." Obviously, it's really depressing to see such predictable racism rearing its head in the MTG community, especially given the inroads into inclusivity Wizards seems to have been making. It's also been cathartic to see big Magic content creators respond to the outrage and fragility with mockery and a verbal middle finger. Yet so many of those making arsey comments shirk away from the 'R' accusation, seeking out a more palatable excuse instead. It seems like most of the complainers allege that they just want the cards to be 'accurate' and 'true to the NBA's vision,' pulling up statistics to show how Michael Jordan and others are described in the league. Obviously, I'm highly skeptical. I think this reasoning is generally just a fig leaf, poorly disguising the uglier true intent behind the outrage. But if it's not just a bad faith excuse, and you're genuinely upset about Michael Jordan being white instead of black on a Magic: The Gathering card, then you really need to think long and hard about where those feelings are coming from. No one likes to hear that they're racist, so I'll be kind and do this gently. First of all, yes, the NBA’s Michael Jordan in popular opinion is almost certainly a black player. But so what? Do you really think future interpretations of a sport have to be exactly identical to past ones? Of course they don't. Sports shouldn't be frozen, fixed, unchanging, and dead. If people are going to keep watching NBA games, they should try imagining different events taking place, or what is the point? You’ve already seen a game – why would you want a new but identical copy? The very best games inspire people to reinterpret them in different ways and put their own spin on things or inject their own experiences. Today, you'll rarely find an NBA game that's remembered the same by all. Instead, you get NBA games having different scores, or team matchups between wholly different players, or even alternate reality scenarios. It doesn't always work, but it's a hell of a lot more interesting than endless replays of history. In this case, if making the NBA players more diverse can help more people to identify with them and see themselves in these great games, can't that only be a good thing? Being as charitable as humanly possible, fans hate changing. I know this; I watched NBA games after following the sport closely, and at first squirmed over every rebroadcast that I knew didn't happen quite like I remembered it according to my truth. Major alterations in retellings of games you love can be jarring, can take getting used to, can provoke a knee-jerk response. However, a player having a different skin color than the one you remember is not a major alteration to the NBA. It's a very minor one. So frankly, it's rather strange to be this upset about a basketball player's appearance getting reinterpreted when everything else about their person—their skills and their impact on the game—seems to be exactly the same. Other than better diversity, Wizards isn't reinventing the league, so if you're dismayed, I think you ought to ask yourself: why? And guess what? If your favorite Michael Jordan looks exactly like the iconic player he is, you can just watch his highlights or revisit his games. They're great games. They're amazing moments. Nothing has been taken away from you. If you honestly find yourself alienated by just a handful of MTG NBA cards that aren't black—note that the majority, like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, still seem to be—then doesn't that prove the value of diversity? If players not looking like you upsets you, can you not empathize with those who normally have to experience an NBA where no one looks like them? Can't you be happy that Magic: The Gathering is providing a chance, for a change, for more people to see themselves in players like Michael Jordan and Candace Parker? Did you never learn to share? submitted by Thimblesage to freemagic [link] [comments] |
