Hey all,
So this all happened over the last two days and I am still reeling from the whole experience.. a relationship of one year and it took away everything I ever had it feels like.
We started out just over text. All fun, very sweet and affectionate girl, exactly what I needed in my life. I naturally just need a lot of validation and she was feeding that void perfectly. Almost too good to be true. I started enjoying life again, felt satisfied with my job, she would encourage me to do new things, go out into the sun and take care of myself, she bought me things for my face to smoothen it and look more healthy in general. Got me back to eating vegetables again too and got me back into the gym. Almost seemed too good to be true, and of course it was. I went head-in, ready to do anything for her and dedicate my life into starting a family with her.
Fast forward about a month and her real nature starts showing. She expects us to go on dates. Fine, that's normal. But every week. At expensive restaurants. I couldn't say no, couldn't lose her and she constantly reminded me that we wouldn't be together if it wasn't for me being able to provide like that. I felt used, knew I was being used, but she was still sweet and caring so I could see past it.
Two months in, she demands that we go on a vacation. I haven't been in years so I thought it was a cool idea and hey, we were having fun together, so why not? But it had to be LA. I am from the Netherlands so tickets already were 2k, but whatever. Airbnb + rental car, which of course had to be the most expensive one, and general stay, added up to about 10k.
Days before we were going she started constant fights, called me ugly, said nobody wanted me, said she was ashamed of me and that she didn't want to go on vacation with me. Then an hour later she changed her mind, just this back and forth, my mother told me to not go but I still did and as expected, when we got there, it was constant fighting. Her insulting and belittling me. It got so bad that after 3 days, I just flew back home.
I told her I wasn't willing to pay for the car since I wasn't even there. She threatened me with that she would cheat on me if I refused to pay for it. Back then, I was so attached, so in love, I paid. Even though I knew it was wrong. Just constant threats, but at least when she got back, we would still be together and we could eventually work it out. If she would just be like before, it would all be great again.
She understood the leverage she had. I could write a whole book about what happened, but I'll try to not make this too long. Her birthday came around soon after and she basically forced me to buy her some stupid bracelet for 2,5k if I wanted to 'keep her' so I stupidly did. Every time I told her I simply didn't have that kind of money and was putting myself into debt the arguments would start again, she would threaten with cheating and post stuff in her online bio's like 'single' etc, just to taunt me.
Valentine day comes around and I take her out. We have a generally good time and at the end of the night, she confesses she did have sex with another guy while in LA. Then claimed I deserved it because I argued about the car. It broke me apart. I did everything for her, everything to keep her around, and she betrays me like this.
After this I started hanging out with her less and less. She complained obviously, but I was still covering her bills, just 250 a month, so she didn't complain too much as long as I did that.
My grandmother got diagnosed with cancer, which means I had to take time off of work to drive her to get chemo and other appointments. Those days weren't covered and I was okay with that since it was my grandmother. But she just absolutely blew up about that, wishing my grandmother died, said I deserved to lose her, started calling my mother and family ugly etc, but she made 1 major mistake.
I blocked her on whatsapp to just be done with the abuse for a while. At this point she has been insulting me and hurting me daily, hitting me at my insecurities, insulting my family, taunting me about her having cheated and me still providing for her etc. So she blows up my SMS with 'Fuck your grandmother, I hope she fucking dies'. My dad still has our phone numbers under his single provider, idk how it works exactly, but he can see like a call/SMS box. Eventually he opened the app and found the messages and she of course wasn't welcomed here after that anymore.
My parents found out a bit about the financial extortion and were furious to say the least. I still live at home so my mother enforced the rule that whatever I would give my gf, I would have to pay my parents X3 as some sort of boarding fee.
She managed to rack up 600 in bills and forced me to pay it for her. Again. Or else she would do this and that, I was ugly and worthless again etc, it is my job to pay her bills and all that. But there just was no way for me give her 600 and my parents X3. So I simply told her it wasn't happening and she broke up with me and blocked me everywhere. I returned the favor.
So it's finally over I guess. I have just been on xanax and sleeping for the last days, trying to comprehend what happened. Through all this I had to keep a professional composure due to my job, my grandmother is dying from cancer, my uncle hung himself 2 weeks ago (which she also made fun of and bullied me with) and yet, I have to fight the battle alone. I just wish someone would have seen the signs and done something and now I am not sure I'll ever date again.

I'm trying to make a list of all of the things to do in Denver for this summer. Does anyone know of anything I should add?

I'd normally have posted a substantial TR with fotos of our fall 2022 Montreal/Mt. Tremblant voyage by now, but family matters have taken priority. Interested in spas? Check out the Scandinavian one on Nun's isle, a great way to spend a relaxed day. Or, if you enjoy shiatsu massage, check out the wonderful 'ashiatsu' service by Suzanna Chan on Park (aka Parc) Avenue in Mile End. Ashiatsu involves the practitioner using their own foot pressure while suspended above and balanced using wooden poles. We've had hundreds of massages across the globe and both agreed: this was the best ever. My wife is from Montreal. She insisted that we visit the rural Mt Tremblant area in the Laurentians. *Understand, by 'Mt. Tremblant' I DO NOT mean the main touristy 'village', a Disneyfied, pseudo-European ski village.
Instead I mean the excellent countryside nearby. We chose to base at a rental which was part of a most unique 'resort' in La Conception. That resort was called Bel Air and features a variety of uncheap lodgings ranging from domes, to pods to lovely futuristic houses, one of which we rented next to their Clubhouse. We did so to leaf peep out in the middle of nature, plus ride ebikes by the lovely local lakes towards that aforementioned tourist village (see 'P'Tit Train du Nord'). Bel Air has a well-regarded sushi restaurant onsite.
Also, we had underestimated just how wonderful the actual National park called 'Mt. Tremblant' was. It was our first time there and we were impressed.

-a rarity that most tourists miss: the ultra-modern new campus buildings of the University of Montreal in the old Outremont Yards neighbourhood.
In Montreal's Mile End, we rented an apartment from 'Parc Lofts' next to the Rialto theatre and near Tamey Lau's iconic Flower Shop (her motif is the hanging Victorian-top birdcage collection that she also sells, mais oui quite the sight).Les Ptits Enfants de Felice Italian cafe and Cheskies Hassidic Bakery are also right across the road. That apartment had an outdoor hot tub and great views 'to the mountain'. We would recommend it. Those with mobility issues might find the stairs challenging, but it was very good value.
Recommended viewing: The Kings of Coke; The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. Suggested Listening: Leonard Cohen, Gino Vanelli, April Wine, Celine Dion and Arcade Fire. The latter's original rehearsal hall was close to our loft.

Hello all, long time lurker, sometimes responder.
I've been in LA since the last time the Writers struck. Moved out here with all the ambitions and had my ass handed to me quite a bit. I worked my way up from PA to Media Manager, DIT, Focus Puller and Camera Operator, for which I've been in Local 600 since 2013 (coming up on 10 years now... wow). The pandemic changed my career profoundly.
One of my mentors passed away due to Covid. Several of the DPs I regularly operated for either quit the industry or moved. Others still are working out of the country for 7-8 months of the year, and I've been day playing at best in the union Operator world.
My non-Union DP career, on the other hand, has massively taken off.
I've watched others around me come up and make a good living off of their DP careers and the gear they purchased... from smaller setups like an EVA1 with a PL mount and some inexpensive XEENs through Alexa Minis, Mini LFs and lens sets from Zeiss Super Speed IIs through ARRI Master Primes and now Signature Primes.
I've prided myself for a long time that there's a right camera and lens system for each story and each budget; as such, I haven't owned gear in nearly 20 years. But I think it might be time for that to change, and I'm here to see from others if it's been worth their while to buy pro level gear.
I'm almost 40. For sake of my own spine, I recently picked up an EZRig Cinema 3, and then tapped myself out with an O'Connor head and set of sticks. I've got the itch to buy a camera system, as I've watched 4 times this year so far $10-15,000 go to rental houses on features that I've photographed and lit.
I'm considering taking out a business loan. Alexa 35 with a set of primes like the S4i's or dare I even say the Sony Cine primes (for the price, I'm shocked at how good they look... bokeh is similar to the S4i's but with a 9th iris blade, similar breathing and chromatic aberration) or one of my dream zooms (Cooke Varitol 18-100 T3.1).
I've already got a 6x6 matte box with 8 filters and am searching for a decent 4x5.65 for the dozen filters I have there... whichever lens set I go with will determine which setup I keep.
I've got about $40,000 in gear right now, none of it being cameras, lenses, batteries or media. With potentially 4-5 more features this year between LA and Atlanta... is now the time for me to bite the bullet?

• If you want to contribute to this post, please fill out this Google Form. I will be updating this list and remaking the post with new information every now and then.
• THIS MAP is made by the City of Stamford and it has a lot of great data for general questions. Population density, median age, percent of population under 18, demographics, per capita income, local schools, bus routes, population changes, percent who spend more than 30% on housing, and etc. It's an incredible resource! Use it! You can find it by going to https://www.stamfordct.gov/ and under "Around Town" select "City Maps." Then click "Neighborhood Profiles Interactive Map."
• Crime in Stamford. By most standards, nowhere in Stamford is "dangerous," but there's a spectrum. Personally, I consider "above average crime" in Stamford a lot better than other places. At the same time, crime does happen. Specifically property crime like vehicle theft. With that in mind, here's some additional information:
  • The West Side, South End, and East Side have higher crime rates but they're still not "dangerous." Historically, Stamford's entire downtown area was dangerous back in the 1980s and early 1990s. That is no longer the case. Stamford implemented community policing in 1997 and it's received a lot of development since then. These three neighborhoods haven't necessarily gotten as much development as elsewhere. They're not dangerous, but you can tell there's been less economic investment in the properties in these areas.
  • The neighborhoods adjacent to the aforementioned (such as Waterside, Downtown, and Cove) will have more crime-adjacent property value detractors such as abandoned properties, blight, homelessness, or unmaintained public spaces. If you're renting then this consideration shouldn't matter, but it may impact your property value as a homeowner.
• THINGS CHANGE. Rent changes, management changes, and the neighborhood changes. There is no substitute to seeing a place yourself. Get a tour, talk to the management, talk to people who live there right now.
• Finally, this post compiles information submitted through the Google Form but there are many places to live in Stamford. There is no one answer of where to live. Hopefully this guide answers some basic questions and gives you direction of where to google "apartments." Remember independent rental opportunities are always available through places like Facebook Marketplace. Don't just stick to apartments.com or other similar websites.

The following is a list of neighborhoods in order of housing density. This was the best way to guess the likelihood you'll live in these places. This data is from this housing map.
The neighborhoods in order of population are as follows (you can ctrl+f to find the one you care about the most): Downtown, West Side, South End, Glenbrook, East Side, Cove, Bulls Head, Springdale, Waterside, Newfield, Westover, Shippan, North Stamford.

Downtown

General Description: Downtown is one of the most developed neighborhoods in the city. It has the Stamford Transportation Center at the south border — allowing for commuting to New York City's grand central with ease. Downtown has two major business strips: Bedford Street and Summer Street. There is a lot of luxury rental inventory but it is often the most expensive in terms of rent and the management of the properties can be a toss up.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Mill River Park, Columbus Park, Latham Park, Veterans Park. Bedford Street business strip. Summer Street business strip. Columbus park business strip. Stamford Transportation Center. Ferguson Public Library.
Inventory: Primarily rent. Some own (mostly condos).

General description: The West Side has the highest percentage of Black/Latino residents in the city. It is densely populated but doesn't have any major high rises or luxury apartments. Notable amenities/landmarks: Lione Park, E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course, Scalzi Park, and Hatch Field. Stamford Health Hospital.

Buildings are relatively new so for the condition and size of the apartment I felt the pricing was fair, but rent did increase year to year. The same management runs a few similar complexes (Fairgate, Palmer Square, Greenfield & Park 215). Tenants are mostly families and younger couples - lots of kids playing outside in the summer. If you’re someone who wants to be directly downtown it’s not a good fit, but if you want somewhere off the main roads with a little more privacy it wasn’t bad. No major issues with management."

South End

General description: Rebranded as "Harbor Point," the South End was once the most dangerous neighborhood in Stamford but has since been rehabilitated through extensive development. The area has been developed mostly by one developer called Building & Land Technology (or "BLT"). The South End has some of the densest development in the city with plenty more development in the works or actively being built. Outside of BLT's properties, the remaining properties are clear relics of the neighborhood's former reputation. The South End is walkable to the train station. Pedestrians can easily access downtown from the South End howevever the design of I-95 and supporting roads in the area make it unattractive to walk through.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Commons Park, and Kosciuszko Park ("K Park"). Stamford Transportation Center.

General description: The East Side is difficult to define since it is divided by I-95. Generally any property near East Main Street (Route 1) is considered the East Side. With that in mind, this neighborhood doesn't have much definition. For example, a local joke in Stamford is the McDonalds is referred to as "the exit 9 McDonalds" since it is disinherited by Stamford residents as a Stamford business. The demographics are primarily Hispanic/Latino and the area is largely car-centric infrastructure. There are no parks or amenities. East Side does benefit from close proximity to another neighborhood called "Cove."

Cove

General description: Home to some of the most prominent businesses and amenities of Stamford, Cove is a diverse neighborhood by many metrics. Waterside properties attract high-value homes, while decent density in the northern part of the neighborhood provides for a variety of rental opportunities. Cove benefits from multiple large parks, but also has a lot of industrial zoning for city services such as the sewage plant and public works vehicular storage.

Bulls Head

General description: Another neighborhood that lacks definition, Bulls Head as a residential community is usually described as where you are not. If you're too west from Glenbrook, too north from Downtown, too east from Westover, and too South for Newfield, you're in Bulls Head. The center of Bulls Head is the shopping plaza next to five major artery roads: Bedford Street, Summer Street, and Washington Boulevard connect to High Ridge Road and Long Ridge Road. A lot of dense motor traffic comes through this plaza thanks to interest from the northern and southern neighborhoods as well as the nearby communities.

"$1,850 rent. 2019-2021. The building itself is fairly new and was well kept at the time. I liked the roof deck, which hardly anyone else used. It included covered parking, and all the units had very efficient HVAC, a good washer and dryer, and a dishwasher. Closets were also pretty good for a unit this size. Covered parking was great. Landlord was attentive. I moved because of noise. The building itself and the tenants were quiet, but the noise from Hope Street was excruciating 24/7 -- from the cars deliberately outfitted with loud exhaust, to the endless stream of vehicles piling into the Citgo (and fuel deliveries several times a day with the beep beep beep of the traffic backing up), to the commercial trash pickup in the middle of the night. The sound of a dumpster lid slamming shut was like a cannon. No sound absorption could help the noise from outside. Pity because I loved the building and apartment."

General description: As the name suggests, Waterside is one of the four neighborhoods with access to waterfront properties. This neighborhood's access to the water and proximity to the West Side and South End make it a strange mix of properties — ranging from working class to extremely wealthy. Waterside has gotten a few developments along the Long Island Sound and that's where you'll get most rental opportunities.
Notable amenities/landmarks: Boccuzzi Park. Building 1 Community.

What's left?

The following neighborhoods were not covered: North Stamford, Westover, Newfield, and Shippan. Here's what you need to know:

• All of these places are residential suburbs. They are primarily single-family homes. Not a lot of renting opportunities outside of spare rooms in people's houses.
• All of these places have a low crime rate and require a car to get around. None of them have shopping centers or business strips with the exception of businesses along High Ridge Road in Newfield.
• Other little details:
  • North Stamford notably has bad cell reception. It also doesn't have garbage pickup.
  • Newfield has the Harry Bennett Branch of the Ferguson Library located right at the center of it.
  • Westover is home to Westhill High School — in my experience, this high school has a lot of pride from local residents (the others are AITE located north of Bulls Head and Stamford High School located at the southern tip of Glenbrook).
  • Shippan is the wealthiest neighborhood in Stamford (followed by North Stamford).

Hey all, Hoping you can help a confused Aussie here (sorry if this comes across as a noob question in advance). I’m wanting to rent a car through Turo for when I visit LA in a couple of months, and I’m really confused by what all the different terminologies mean.
In Aus for car insurance we just have:
Comprehensive: covers your own vehicle plus the other vehicle(s) if you’re in a crash. Normally have an excess of around $600-$800.
Third party: Just covers the other vehicle if you’re at fault. Maybe fire and theft if you’re lucky.
I think what you guys in the US call third party liability where it insures you against property damage and people’s medical bills are just covered by our rego payments here.
I see you can get this third party liability through Turo, if I’ve understood it correctly, that doesn’t cover the actual rental car right? I will need to get a loss damage waiver and collision damage waiver separately? I’ve looked online and a lot of sites say your own insurance should cover you but I don’t think this is the case with, at least my own, Australian insurance.
Can someone help me understand the best way for an international visitor be fully insured, to what I’d call comprehensive?

Reminder that these are purely my own opinions based on our experiences only, I’m certain there are many that will disagree which is totally fine!
  Super awesome, would recommend every time   -Happily Ever After - I’ve always been in the camp of “if you’ve seen one fireworks show, you’ve seen them all”, but man, was I tickled to be proven wrong. The accompanying soundtrack was fantastic, as was the backdrop of the castle projections. Even viewing from afar by the flagpole near the entrance (a super great spot we scoped out 15 minutes prior), we had a great experience.
-Festival of the Lion King - This was my favorite part of Animal Kingdom by far. Not to spoil it for anyone, but the sheer level and variety of talent on display was astounding.
-Character interactions - I was thoroughly impressed by the level of professionalism and accommodation of the characters. Never did we feel rushed or unwelcome, and every character appeared to do their best in creating a magical moment for our daughter, who took her sweet time getting warmed up to them.
-Disney transportation - This might just have been a product of our visit being during a low-ish crowd season and the lack of an internal bus route at our resort, but our wait for buses never exceeded longer than ten minutes, and buses never hit capacity before we were able to board. And beyond just buses, I loved the flexibility of it all. On our Disney Springs day, we rode a bus to Magic Kingdom, and from there rode the Monorail to the Polynesian, had some coffee, and from there rode the bus to Disney Springs, and from there once we were done, took the boat back to the French Quarter. All that might sound unnecessary and convoluted, but small children (if they’re anything like mine) can enjoy these “rides” as much as the real ones at the parks.
-Lego Store Mini-Fig Factory - What a sleeper (and cheap) hit. We went early in the morning, so there was no wait, and spent a good chunk of time creating our designs for our Mini-Figs. And you get a terrific souvenir to take home!
 
Pretty great   -Festival of Fantasy Parade – A lovely opportunity to see familiar characters all in one place. We got out of Pirates at about 10 minutes prior to start and were able to find a ton of space in Frontierland right where the parade would begin. My only very minor gripe would be that I wish they would move a little slower so we can experience the magic for a tad longer. 😀
-Finding Nemo and Beyond - Animal Kingdom really nails it when it comes to the shows. Not as high up as Lion King since the showmanship isn’t as flashy. It’s a wholly new experience, nonetheless (unless you’re already an enthusiast of fish puppetry), and I was blown away by how agile the performers were in their movement, singing, and manipulating their puppets all at the same time.
-Photopass Photographers - We didn’t take too many of these, but all the photographers (with the exception of one grump) were super friendly and professional.
-Toppolino’s Terrace breakfast - Pretty pricey for what you get, but definitely one of the better meals of our trip. Pastry basket was surprisingly good, and the characters were terrific, per usual.
-Hoop Dee Doo Revue - What a talented cast. We were on the balcony in Category 3, so we were somewhat left out of the excitement on the ground floor, but we had a great time anyway. The strawberry shortcake was probably one of the best things I ate on the trip.
-Port Orleans French Quarter - Great proximity to the parks, great pool, and small enough you could quickly and easily walk to where you wanted to be. My only complaint is that the plumbing was absurdly loud, and we could hear it any time our neighbors flushed their toilet.
 
Could have been better   -Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique - This took longer than we budgeted, close to two hours total. They had us wait at reception, then wait to get in the dressing room, then wait to get out of the dressing room, then wait to get into hair and makeup). Otherwise, our fairy godmother was sweet and accommodating, and we ended up with a ton of great photos from the experience. I’d probably rate this higher if our daughter had enjoyed it more, but she just wasn’t that into it.
–Park rides (overall) - They were mostly underwhelming, and for me personally, once you’ve been on a few rides that move slowly along a track in the dark with animatronics, the rest get pretty old rather quickly. They could use a little more maintenance, too? (Or maybe it was just guests being shits and standing up when they weren’t supposed to). A lot of our rides stopped multiple times mid-way, most notably, Mine Train, which stopped as we were climbing one of the steep inclines, and DD freaked out and begged to be let out. I also noticed plenty of rides being down on the app.
Our stand-outs for attractions were: Remy, Soarin’ (though the line of sneakers in your field of vision kinda mars the experience), Guardians, and Safari.
-Food (overall) - We tried a lot of the chart toppers (Mickey beignets, Dole Whip, Cheshire Cat Tail, caramel popcorn and butter bar from Germany, school bread from Norway, ice cream from France, and more I can’t think of), but weren’t too impressed. I guess that’s what happens to quality when you run through as much product as they do, but I suppose I could have just gotten swept up in all the food blog hype.
-Cinderella’s Royal Table lunch - The price tag on this is outrageous. The food was very good, yes. As were the ambiance and the interactions with the princesses. But in the end it was just something to do to have done it more than for the experience itself.
-Tusker House breakfast - The food here was reminiscent of the dorm food from my undergrad days. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but just a general vibe of quantity-over-quality that churns out a lot of food. We had a very late morning reservation, so we had a taste of the lunch offerings as well (which… yeah, same deal as the above).
-Chef Art’s Homecomin’ - One of the bigger disappointments of the trip. There was a lot of hype surrounding their thigh-high biscuit sandwiches, but for me, the biscuits were dry and tasteless, and the chicken was mostly breading.
-Winter Summerland Mini-Golf - I mean, it’s mini-golf? I guess I expected a bit more since it’s Disney ™, but nope. Just mini-golf. We had vouchers from our trip package, so at least it was free. 😀
 
Thumbs down   -Dining/Food service cast members - Most places we went for food, the cast members were rather aloof and gave off a major I-don’t-want-to-be-here vibe. A lot of the time, I felt like I was terribly inconveniencing them, and could I please just hurry it along? For table service, we hardly ever saw our servers except for when taking our orders and bringing us our food.
-Guest behavior - Throughout our trip we experienced:

• Devices being played in public spaces without headphones
• Parents not attending to their crying children
• Older kids (above the height restriction) taking over the resort splash pad refusing to leave when told to by a cast member
• A tween telling his father to “shut your mouth idiot.”
• Cast members over the PA telling guests to stay seated and/or keep hands and feet inside the vehicle x 50

 
Plain awful   -Croque Glace (Epcot ice cream sandwich) - Easily the biggest disappointment of the trip. If you’d like to recreate the experience without venturing into the parks, just press some ice cream into some warmed up hamburger buns. (Okay, to be fair, this probably doesn’t deserve this score on a purely objective level, or to be shamed in its own category, but the let-down factor was all too real).
 

Additional observations

  -Genie Plus - This might be controversial, but I would not do any of the parks again without it. Yes, the app is super buggy and had to be restarted countless times when it became unresponsive. And yes, the whole thing actually stopped working for all guests one of our mornings. And yes, it is kind of a throat punch to add yet another expense to an already exorbitant total. But it was completely worth it to be able to avoid stand-by lines completely (with the exception of attractions hit during rope-drop and those without LL at all). The longest we waited for any ride was about 10 minutes for our Peter Pan or Soarin’ LL which is really just priceless when it comes to managing an impatient four year-old’s mood levels. I also abused the heck out of the “Modify Plan” feature on existing LLs to either push back return times we wouldn’t be able to make or to fish for earlier return times for when we were running ahead of schedule. And most importantly: I studied the Ear Scouts guide prior to the trip and went in knowing exactly what to do.
-Rental Car - We live in a landlocked state far from coasts, so going to the beach on this trip was a must for us. Plus we got to tack on an amazing kayaking experience along the Banana River for some wildlife viewing, so it worked out pretty well. The freedom to go where we wanted at our own pace was also nice (despite the awesome reliability and convenience of Disney transportation).
-Memory Maker - I completely missed the memo on attraction Photo-Pass photos being available for free with Genie Plus, so it turns out I shelled out $170 for a handful of photos that we could have taken on our own or bought for cheaper a-la-carte. If you have a larger group or if you’re taking a slower pace through the parks, it’d probably be worth the cost, but for us, it’s probably something we could have done without.
-Magic Bands - They were great for ease-of-access, but a lot pricier than I’d like. Even at the cheapest options available, $20 a person is a steep cost for the convenience of not having to pull out your phone all the time.
 

Overall feels

  I’m a planner, and I do enjoy the process of building itineraries and making lists and thinking through contingencies, and I get a terrific high from actualizing those plans. That said, Disney is a bit much. Sure, you could just as well “wing it”, but for this kind of expense, it’s just the responsible thing to do to make sure the experience is going to be as fulfilling as possible beforehand. And that means planning out your meals 60+ days out, setting up alerts for canceled reservations, watching a host of YouTube videos on how to rope drop or use Genie Plus, and generally, making a slew of decisions you aren’t at all informed to make way in advance.
We likely won’t be back for a long time, if ever, not on account of the experience being poor by any means (the experience itself was awesome), but the cost and amount of work that goes into it (which doesn’t stop even when you’re actually there). This was probably the least vacation-y vacation I’ve ever been on, and I’m not quite eager for a repeat just yet.

I (F28) and my husband (M28) had our wedding in April 2023. We had a less than 1-year engagement, but have been together for 3 years. When we decided to get married, we wanted to prioritize natural beauty, good food, and quality time with our closest family and friends. We decided to have a non-traditional day-time wedding on Saturday at a non-traditional wedding venue and only invite 60 people. We are at the age where many of our friends are getting married and having expensive weddings for which their parents are fronting the bulk of the costs. My husband are I are fortunately in a position where we are able to finance the wedding we wanted without external support. It was also very important for us to not accept money with "strings attached" because we wanted 100% control over the wedding planning and decision making. I think it's worth noting that my husband and I both have higher education degrees with stable, well-paying jobs and stayed employed during the pandemic.

We made a joint account in January 2023 for wedding expenses and joint expenses. We do each keep separate checking and saving accounts for "fun no-questions-asked money". The bulk of our money remains in the joint account. Our direct deposits go into our joint account and then a fixed and equal amount goes from the joint account into our separate accounts. We use one Mint account to budget and track and have both joint and separate accounts linked, so everything is transparent. We have been very open to each other about money since the early stages of our relationship (specifically when T introduced me to personalfinance).

I have lived with him since the day he closed on the house and paid him "rent" (expense sharing if the IRS ever asks) every month. Luckily our little house is in a very desirable area (thank you school district), and the value of the property has increased slowly and steadily overtime. T has said before, "you'll have to pry the 3% interest rate from my cold dying hands." It seems like we're going to keep this for a while.

T has a long commute to work and drives on average 22,500 miles a year. He used to have a gas guzzling Toyota FJ Cruiser that got a whopping 16 miles per gallon (14.7L/100km for our friends across the pond). When gas prices got over $5 per gallon in our area, he was spending ~$600/month on gas. This got very expensive and his job offers cheap Electric Vehicle charging. In March 2022, he traded in the FJ Cruiser for a small profit, and bought the new Kia EV6. In the end, he got the full $7,500 EV tax credit and now spends ~$90/month on "fuel".

When T and I first started dating, our salaries were very very different. T's salary was about 3-4x the amount mine was. As my career has progressed, I have closed the income gap quite a bit. We are paid on a 26 pay-period schedule, so for the sake of this, we multiplied our paystubs by 26 and divided by 24 to get our monthly take-home pay.

Dress/Clothing:
Hers: $823.35 dress + $570 alterations = $1,393.35
I bought my dress second-hand from a website called StillWhite. I tried gowns on in local boutiques, but they were $2,000+ out the door, without alterations. I know you're not supposed to even put on dresses that you can't buy because you'll fall in love and spend way more money than you want, but I had to get the experience. I found a dress I did fall in love with, but I ultimately didn't want to spend $2,000+ on a dress alone. I went to sample sales and off-the-rack type of wedding dress shops, but couldn't find anything that I liked more than the $2,000+ at the boutique. I found out about a website where brides sell their pre-loved wedding gowns and started browsing. I filtered my search to dresses similar to the ones I tried on in the shop, and the exact dress I loved was being sold by someone in another state. I ended up buying her dress for $600 and covered the $223.35 in shipping costs to ship it to me. Being in my career, environmental sustainability is very important to me and I loved that I was able to "reuse" a dress and give it another go instead of buying new.
His: $648 suit + $20.32 tie = $668.32
T bought his suit in August 2022 because we had a few weddings last wedding season and he needed a new suit because his staple suit at the time was the one he had since high school! We went to a shop where you can get custom suits made at affordable prices and got him his new big-boy suit. So, he actually wore it to a few weddings as a guest before he wore it to our wedding! He decided tog et a new tie to pair with his suit for our wedding and he looked fabulous!

T is not big on jewelry, but went to the local jeweler with me. There weren't many choices other than plain gold bands, plain platinum bands, etc. and T's taste is eccentric. He did find one ring he liked and the jeweler wanted $350 for the ring. I knew that many people buy their rings on Etsy, so I told him we should hold off and look at rings on Etsy because he might find something he likes more on there. We went home and found someone on Etsy who was selling the same ring for $60. T bought 2 of the rings in different colors, so he has the best of both worlds.

Section Five: Wedding Day Explanation & Diary
How did you save up for this event and for how long? Fortunately we are both very frugal with our money and normally live below our means. I grew up with a saver-mentality, so it's actually more difficult for me to spend money than it is to save it. To save for our wedding, we did cut back on spending on unnecessary things like eating out, vacations, and general consumerism. T had an expensive track-racing hobby that was costing $5,000/year, but he didn't participate post-engagement which saved a lot of money. We also decreased our contributions to retirement down to the employer match over our engagement. In addition to saving more, T has a lot of opportunity for overtime at work so he purposefully picked up extra hours in preparation for the wedding. This included perks like pay-differentials and temporary incentives.
Did you accumulate credit card debt for your wedding? We used credit cards for the points, but have the money to pay it off in full by the due date so as to not accrue interest.
What about a honeymoon trip? We plan on buying a second property soon, and decided to make that our first priority after the wedding, so we will take our honeymoon on our first wedding anniversary instead. We're hoping to take extended vacation and travel abroad to Asia or Europe. However, we are taking a week-long trip out to the west coast in June so we're looking forward to that! We will be staying with my family, so the costs for this will be low as lodging will not be an expense.
April 2023 Wedding Weekend:
The week leading up to our wedding was nerve-wracking weather-wise. One day it would be a 100% chance of rain all day, and the next day it would be none whatsoever. We wanted to be able to have the ceremony outside and spend time on the outdoor patio for cocktail hour, so our fingers were crossed for great weather. Luckily, nature blessed us and the weekend was ...for the most part*... beautiful, partly cloudy, and had temperatures in the high 60s through high 80s.

Friday: T's family hosted a family dinner for members on each side of the aisle to get to know each other before the big day. Since we didn't have any bridesmaids or groomsmen, we didn't need a rehearsal dinner and decided to do the family gathering instead. T spent all Friday morning at his family's house setting up for the party. T and his family went to Costco and bought all of the food, refreshments, plates, and cutlery which T's family graciously paid for at check-out. I spent all morning at the venue, setting up decorations and arranging last minute logistics with the venue coordinator. The family gathering went really well as it was the first time that most of our family members got to meet each other. Our families live anywhere from hundreds to thousands of miles away from each other, so it was very nice to have the opportunity for them to get to know each other before the wedding. The night was filled with laughter, photos, celebratory toasts, good food, and drinks! The party ended around 9pm because we had to get up bright and early the next day. After the party, we drove to the inn and spent the night at the venue. This was convenient because we could just wake up and already be there.

Saturday: We woke up bright and early. T got ready in 5 minutes (just like any other groom *eyeroll*) and went downstairs to the bar for his morning coffee and a lemon poppy-seed muffin. T told me the venue was baking fresh bread in the morning because the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread permeated the entire restaurant. I woke up and waited for my (now) mother-in-law and sister-in-law to meet me in the suite to do my hair and make-up (HMU), respectively. I'm lucky because my MIL's first job was at a hair salon, and my SIL has taken professional make-up courses and they both offered to do my hair and make-up as a gift for my wedding. I opted for an up-do for my hair and natural-romantic make-up for my bridal "look". While they were working on my HMU, my family came up to my suite to spend time with me before the craziness started. (Note: T and I decided not to have a wedding party, so no bridesmaids, groomsmen, maid of honor, or best man) The staff at the inn brought a tray with an assortment of fruit, fresh pastries, coffee, and tea. It was nice to converse with my family and my in-laws, and eat through the yummy breakfast tray. Everything was done by 9:15am, and T and I headed for our "first look" photos. T and I were able to have our "first look" in the garden of the venue, with our family on standby waiting for pre-ceremony family portraits. Once all the combinations of the family portraits were over, T and I went inside and hid while our arriving guests made their way to their seats on the lawn for the ceremony.
Our ceremony was short and sweet and graciously officiated for free by T's brother, B. B actually introduced us, so it made our ceremony much more special. T and I read personal vows to each other, and I definitely didn't expect to cry so much during that part of the ceremony. If you're thinking of having personal vows at your wedding, I encourage you to do it, but have tissues at the ready.
After the ceremony, we joined our guests on the patio for cocktail hour. We had butlered hors d'oeuvres and wine, beer, and cocktails available. We had baked brie and berry bites, beef wellington bites, shrimp cocktail, vegan spring rolls, Cajun chicken skewers, mini meatballs, black bean bites, and chickpea bruschetta. It was so nice to see that every single guest who RSVP'd "yes" actually showed up. Due to the size of our wedding, T and I were able to make our rounds to each group of guests multiple times, as well as try all the food available. There have been weddings where we only spoke to the bride and groom once because there were so many people vying for their attention, and we really wanted to have an intimate wedding where we could spend quality time with each of our guests. The size we had was perfect for that.
After cocktail hour, we took a group photo with all of our guests and headed inside to the main dining room where T and I welcomed our guests and listened to speeches by our nearest and dearest. Since our venue is primarily a restaurant and not a wedding venue (with huge banquet hall/open space) a concern of ours when planning was fitting all of our guests in the same room for dining. Fortunately our guests were all able to fit comfortably in the main dining room, which made us very happy to have all of our loved ones in the same space. T and I picked the menu and our guests were able to pick a starter and main course from a selection of 5 choices each. To name a few the starters included chicken lettuce wraps, ricotta and pesto toast, and vegan chickpea chowder and the mains included crab cake, steak au poivre, chicken milanese, and a vegan Mediterranean bowl. We picked this place because the food is absolutely amazing, and the quality of service is superb. Multiple people told us after the wedding that it was the best food they have ever eaten at a wedding. This makes us happy because delicious food was one of our top wedding priorities.
After eating, the guests were directed to the room with the band and dance floor while T and I hid in a nearby room. T and I didn't want to have a dedicated first dance, because we didn't want to be in the spotlight for a full dance. Instead, we had the band loop the intro to "Shut Up and Dance" by Walk the Moon and announce us as newlyweds! We ran through a tunnel of guests to the dance floor as the first verse started. We danced together to this upbeat and fun song for ~20 seconds and then we invited those around us to dance with us! This was perfect for us since we weren't too keen on the traditional "first dance" vibe. The band was really great and having live music was entertaining for those like T who aren't the biggest fans of dancing. We changed our outfits after our "first dance" to reception outfits, and surprised our guests with our new outfits. The band even said we win "best in fashion wedding edition" for the weddings they have played. It was a relief to change out of my huge and heavy ballgown dress which must've weighed 15 lbs and caused bruising on my shoulders, and T appreciated putting on a fresh non-sweaty shirt. The afternoon went on with great live music, dancing, drinks flowing, and yummy mini desserts (éclair, tartlets, chocolate/raspberry mousse, and cannoli) passed around!
*Remember when I was talking about the weather and how it was supposed to rain all day or not at all? Well we met smack dab in the middle at a torrential downpour 5 minutes after the reception ended and our guests left. Unfortunately, we were left to pack up our car during said downpour because the restaurant opened to the public and we needed to clear our personal stuff out. We really didn't have too much to pack from the wedding because we didn't bring too many decorations. We have our luggage and then 2 cardboard boxes of stuff, so we were out of there quickly. That night, T and I went to the hotel where our out-of-town guests were staying and hung out at the bar. We were beat by 10pm and that night had the best sleep that we had in a while.

Sunday: My family hosted a Sunday Brunch at a brunch buffet near the hotel with the room block. The wedding was very local and ended in the early evening, and most of our friends and family live in the city, so they did not need to stay in a hotel for our wedding and could just go to their own home. Most of the Sunday Brunch attendees were immediate family and those staying in the hotel block. It was nice to see everyone one last time before family members and loved ones traveled back home. My uncle surprised us with a hand-made cutting board with a intricate design made of maple, cherry, and walnut wood. T and I were very impressed with the craftmanship of this gift. My uncle is not a man of words, and doesn't outwardly express his emotions, but this was his way of showing us his love and sending his congratulations. It is so beautiful that we will never cut anything on it, and instead want to display it. Brunch food was very good. The buffet had a spread of fruit, pastries, breakfast staples (sausage, egg, bacon, waffle, homefries). Included in the buffet was a la carte eggs benedict and smoked salmon -- yum! Spending the morning with our families together was the perfect end to the perfect weekend.

Reflection:
Although $21,000 is a lot of money to spend on one day, we have been to weddings where people have spent a lot more and a lot less. Budget does not determine the success of your wedding, and you should plan your wedding however you want, even if it means not incorporating traditions just for the sake of doing traditions. Since we financed the wedding on our own, we had 100% control of the decisions and that definitely helped minimize our wedding planning stress. We feel like we utilized our money well and prioritized the aspects of the wedding we value the most while staying within a budget that we could afford without crippling our financial future. Choosing the venue that we did kept things simple and all-inclusive where the traditionally external roles (like coordinators, caterer, and florists) were all handled by the owner of the restaurant (AKA venue coordinator). T and I are especially grateful for the support and help of our families specifically for the Friday and Sunday events. We wish we could rewind and do it all over again!

• Crooked River Lighthouse: Full Moon Event. Join us for our Full Moon Lighthouse Climb on Friday, May 5th from 8:00-10:00 pm in Carrabelle, FL. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising moon. Guests can also visit the Keeper’s House Museum afterhours and see the new exhibit for the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel Lens. Visitors can also enjoy the glowing fire pit (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. The climb to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse rewards bold climbers with breathtaking views of the bay. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Advance reservations are required for those who wish to climb the lighthouse tower during this event by calling the Lighthouse gift shop. A limited number of climbers (max of 7) are allowed at one time. There will be a time limit for viewing from the top. Guests who would like a more leisurely climbing experience are welcome to enjoy one of the daytime climbs available every Wednesday through Sunday. Masks are welcome but not required. Crooked River Lighthouse is located in Carrabelle, just west of the Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1975 Hwy 98 W, Carrabelle. • Brinkley Glen Park: Invasive Plant Removal. Join Master Gardener Volunteers at this weekly invasive plant removal event. This is a great way to learn to ID our invasive plant species and how to remove them. We recommend wearing long pants and sleeves, closed-toed shoes, gloves, a hat and mosquito spray. Bring gardening tools such as hand clippers, loppers, trowels, etc. if you have them. We are removing coral ardisia bushes and berries, nandina, tung trees, Tradescantia flumenensis, cat's claw vine, winged yam, Japanese climbing fern, skunkvine and more. Directions: The best way to get there is to take Meridian Rd to Waverly Rd, go to the next intersection and turn left onto Abbotsford Way, then turn left at the next road called Woodside Dr. At the stop sign turn left onto Lothian. • Leon Sinks: First Saturday Hike. If it is the first Saturday of the month, it is time for a hike at Leon Sinks! We will meet at 9 am in the parking lot and hike the trail together to see the beautiful geological features of the area while walking on wooded hiking trails. Right off US 319 south of Tallahassee, the Leon Sinks Geological Area contains 5 miles of trails leading to a series of sinkholes big and small. The land in this area is underlain by a layer of limestone, eroded and dissolved by rainwater and groundwater to form caverns, holes, and tunnels. This type of terrain is called "karst" and results in many geological features such as wet sinkholes, depressions, natural bridges and a disappearing stream. The hikers can either hike the 3.6-mile Sinkhole Trail to view the numerous sinkholes and geological features, or the 2.8-mile Gum Swamp Trail around a cypress and gum swamp. We recommend wear hiking shoes and bringing a water bottle and consider bug spray or long pants/sleeves. 9am

TLDR and tips at the top first, cuz attention span of people may be low.
TLDR first: Do not go into Singapore if you:

1. Can't handle the cursed commute (for me was anywhere from 4-6 hours daily). You will hate life.
2. Haven't been in the country before (please go there before you decide you wanna work there).
3. Not sure if you can handle the commute? Try it for yourself for few days or 1 week then you know.

Tip(s) second:

1. Must stay in Singapore, refer to point number 1 above. But since the rent increase/hike recently, it may be harder to find a reasonable price u willing/able to afford. Recently I observed most people have been moving out and now the JB customs is packed like hell, used to be pack like this only on Fridays, but now everyday is (worse than) Friday traffic. Imagine that!
2. If u die die also wanna work in Singapore for whatever reason, find a office nearby at top of Singapore map like woodlands/kranji, etc. Look at google maps for yourself. DO NOT accept job offer if the office is at the bottom of the Singapore map, such as Changi area, or like mine at Kaki Bukit. This relates to point 1 above. However can be considered if u salary high like maybe 4k above, but u as fresh grad 100% not going to get this salary.
3. Extremely important, if you beh tahan and wanna get the fuck out, u need to leave before 60 days. Because working less than 60 days means you will be exempted from income tax, which is 15% in Singapore. However, if u didn't know this (like me) then u will stuck here for 183 days like I am now. This is the way it works, < 60 days = exempt from tax, > 60 days and < 183 days u will get 15% tax. I hope this is clear. I really really wished I'd known this earlier, I would have left immediately lol.

So yea, the above TLDR and tips is the meat of this post, read below if u wanna know how my experience was like.
I'm writing this post to let people around my age to be aware of this situation as its a very common situation and you may find yourself too eager to want to work in Singapore when you've just graduated either you're too excited or your parents are pressuring you, but my advice is don't rush in! You may regret it.
I'm 25 years old, degree in IT, born, raised, and graduated locally in Malaysia. When I was done with my finals in my final semester, I immediately applied over 600 Singapore jobs in a span of a month. Of the 600 jobs I've applied for, 5 interviewed me and only 1 accepted me, and this is a shady company take note. I've never went to Singapore before, and the first time I was there, it was for a job interview, this company wanted me to take a physical exam because they wanted to make sure I didn't google the answers, so I went there, stayed a night at a nearby hotel and the next morning 5am I was at JB Central and this morning was the first time I witnessed the long human traffic waiting for the damn bus and the first thing I wanted to do was to immediately go back to KL (I wish I did that) but I was curious to try so I went for the interview, didn't got it, then went back to KL. A few days later this shady company called me and accepted me and I went with this company.
Fast forward, right now I'm 5 months almost 6 months working here, and I can't wait to go back to KL on the 28th as I've already resigned.

EDIT: Also beware of job offers that sound too good to be true like mine was. I learned that: rushing in = rushing out example my company was desperate to hire and I was desperate to get hired.
Never make rash/rushing decisions in life. Chinese has a saying that goes something like "wanna run also no life to run".

EDIT 2: i feel the need to explain the cursed commute just so u all know the full extent of it and to be aware this is what it takes to earn 3x currency; u think easy? think again after i explain the bullshit u have to face daily it will scare u away already and u come to conclusion it’s not worth the suffering.
firstly u wake up at 4.30am or even 3am sometimes and go through the following steps:

1. Head to JB central. if u miracle lucky and managed to get a place that is walking distance fine. But as u all know in life generally u will not be lucky and me along with most people take a grab which is pricey af when taken twice daily eating into your salary already.
2. human traffic no 1. line up > face scanned > go downstairs > human traffic no. 2 line up > take whatever bus usually you’ll be taking the CW1,2, or 5 buses into woodlands customs.
3. reached woodlands customs > human traffic no. 3 line up > face scanned > go downstairs > human traffic no. 4 > take another bus here into wherever u need to go. in my case ill take a CW2 from jb to woodlands and from woodlands to nearby my office (nearby not even reached yet).
4. u are now in your final bus this will take u into Singapore here u will *start\* your commute to the office which i mentioned in above tip no. 2 u NEED/WANT your office to be top of map not bottom.

so lets break down the time. 4.30am alarm shocks you up u drag yourself out of bed, get ready and u reached jb central 5am. Passing jb customs I estimate anywhere from 1-2 hours; Woodlands customs same. So after both customs passed the time is at least 7am now. So 5am-7am already 2 hours commute. Then after work do again the above in reverse, another 2 hours. So total *minimum daily is 4 hours\* (again in good normal traffic).
If the traffic is heavy how? Like good fridays, raya, etc. major holidays you will not have any chance at all of getting a bus, I suggest you just walk la. On the recent good friday, I walked from Kranji to JB Central.
Also, another point is that when u at jb central u still need to call a grab, the worst possible frustrating scenario is when there's too many people calling grab and u cant get a grab. One time I remembered on a normal working day (non-festive) that I waited until 9pm to get a grab, I almost wanted to cry then, you could imagine my frustration taking into context I hadn't ate and I needed to use the bathroom to take a shit, at the same time thinking I had to be here AGAIN at 5am and then also having to endure 2 hours waiting for a damn grab? Yea u can imagine I was super unhappy and pissed off already at this point. Already no time for myself to exercise, gym, socialise, and be a normal human being, still need to wait for grab and can't go back yet to take a shit? Yea fuck this, 3x currency was worth this? 3x currency does not mean 3x life, in fact it was 3x suffering, I swear I had a much better life in Malaysia lol. Another lesson here is, money IS NOT EVERYTHING 100%, u need to factor in your time for yourself, exercise, hobbies, etc etc. If it weren't for the damn currency, I bet not a single person would willingly live/stay in Singapore. Period.
Recently with rental hike in Singapore, and people moving out, now my commute is *minimum 5 hours daily\* so another major point to consider here, your commute is unpredictable.
