Stock futures nudge higher as Wall Street awaits U.S. midterm elections

Stock futures were slightly higher Tuesday following a winning day for markets as investors looked ahead to U.S. midterm elections.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 52 points, or 0.16%. S&P 500 futures were up 0.18%. Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.47%.
Shares of Lyft fell nearly 20% premarket while Take-Two Interactive and Tripadvisor slumped more than 18% each after reporting disappointing quarterly results.
The moves come after a day when all major indexes notched a second straight positive session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed higher by 423.78 points, or 1.31%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 gained 0.96%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.85%.
Investors are awaiting Tuesday’s midterm election results. They will determine which party controls Congress and steer future policy and spending. Market participants will watch whether Republicans take back the House of Representatives, the Senate or both.
“The financial market reaction to a Republican win should be muted, as the House outcome is already widely expected, and the Senate outcome makes less of a difference to policy outcomes if Republicans control the House,” Goldman Sachs’ Jan Hatzius wrote in a Monday note.
“A surprise Democratic win in the House and Senate would likely weigh on equities, as market participants might expect additional corporate tax increases,” Hatzius added.
Wall Street will also closely watch Thursday’s consumer price index report for the latest data on how much the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes have tamed high inflation. This reading could also signal the central bank’s path forward – another hotter-than-anticipated report could embolden the Fed to raise rates aggressively in December.
Earnings season continues this week. On Tuesday, Lordstown Motors, Lucid Group, Walt Disney and AMC Entertainment all report their latest quarterly results.

2021.10.18 15:15 bigbear0083 (10/18) Monday's Pre-Market Stock Movers & News

Good Monday morning traders and investors of the smallstreetbets sub! Welcome to the new trading week and a fresh start! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Monday, October 18th, 2021-

5 things to know before the stock market opens Monday

1. Wall Street set to start the week lower after Friday’s rally

  • Dow futures dropped nearly 150 points Monday ahead of a busy week for corporate earnings against the backdrop of increasing U.S. oil prices and a tick-up in bond yields. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rallied Friday and for all of last week.
  • The Dow was less than 1% from its Aug. 16 record close. The S&P 500 was nearly 1.5% away from its Sept. 2 record close. The Nasdaq was 3.1% from its Sept. 7 record close.
  • The flood of earnings takes a pause Monday but picks back up Tuesday with Netflix, Johnson & Johnson, United Airlines and Procter & Gamble reporting.
  • So far, 41 S&P 500 companies have delivered third-quarter results, with 80% of them topping EPS expectations, according to data from FactSet.
  • Taking into account those already out and estimates for the rest, third-quarter profit growth would total 30%, the third-highest quarterly profit growth rate for S&P 500 firms since 2010, according to FactSet.

2. WTI tops $83 per barrel; bond yields move higher

  • U.S. oil prices, as measured by West Texas Intermediate crude, jumped another 1%, topping $83 per barrel, their highest level since October 2014. Behind the march higher are continued recovering demand as Covid-depressed business activity picks up, and as high natural gas and coal prices encourage a switch to fuel oil and diesel for power generation. WTI was already up three straight sessions and surged 3.7% last week for its eighth positive week in a row, the best weekly winning streak May 2015.
  • The 10-year Treasury yield started the week moving back up toward 1.62%. Before topping those levels earlier this month, the last time it was that high was in June. The 10-year yield, which moves inversely to price, was boosted Friday after data showed that U.S. retail sales rose by 0.7% in September, versus an expected decline of 0.2%. Industrial production figures for September are out at 9:15 a.m. ET, with estimates calling for a 0.2% increase following a 0.4% jump in August.

3. China GDP disappoints, third-quarter growth slows to 4.9%

  • China’s third-quarter gross domestic product grew a disappointing 4.9% from a year ago as industrial activity in the world’s second-largest economy rose less than expected in September.
  • Many factories had to stop production in late September as a surge in the price of coal and a shortage of electricity prompted local authorities to abruptly cut off power. The struggles of giant developer China Evergrande came to the forefront in August. Real estate and related industries account for about a quarter of China’s GDP, according to Moody’s estimates.

4. Bitcoin inches toward all-time highs on bitcoin ETF optimism

  • Bitcoin crept close to its April all-time highs near $65,000, rising about 1.5% on Monday to more than $61,000. The world’s biggest digital currency hit a six-month high above $60,000 on Friday. Traders are optimistic the SEC won’t stand in the way of the first bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund, which would begin trading Tuesday unless regulators stepped in. Approval of an ETF that gives mainstream investors exposure to bitcoin would be a landmark for the crypto industry. After April’s record, bitcoin, known for its volatility, slumped and even traded below $29,000 in June before recovering.

5. Apple likely to finish transforming its MacBook lineup

  • Apple is holding a launch event Monday to announce new products, likely including a redesigned MacBook Pro. The company has a chance to drive continued momentum to its Macs ahead of the holiday shopping season, especially since it’s expected to announce more computers that run on its own chips instead of Intel’s processors. Last month, Apple announced and subsequently released new iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches, leaving Macs as the remaining major product line that hasn’t been updated this fall. Apple is also likely to provide a release date for macOS Monterey, the latest version of Mac software, which was announced in June but has not yet been officially released.

2021.10.18 15:11 bigbear0083 (10/18) Monday's Pre-Market Stock Movers & News

Good Monday morning traders and investors of the StockMarketChat sub! Welcome to the new trading week and a fresh start! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Monday, October 18th, 2021-

(CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE FULL SOURCE!)

2021.10.07 14:23 bigbear0083 (10/7) Thursday's Pre-Market Stock Movers & News

Good morning traders and investors of the smallstreetbets sub! Welcome to Thursday! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Thursday, October 7th, 2021-

5 things to know before the stock market opens Thursday

1. Dow set to jump as optimism builds for a debt celling deal

  • Dow futures rose 300 points Thursday as Democratic senators signaled they were receptive to a debt ceiling offer from Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell that would allow an emergency increase into December. Optimism about a possible deal swung Wall Street from sharp early Wednesday losses to modest gains at the close for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. All three benchmarks were tracking Thursday for three-session winning streaks after October started off with sharp back-and-forth losses and gains.

2. Bond yields steady ahead of jobs data Thursday and Friday

  • The 10-year Treasury yield was steady Thursday and remained above 1.5% ahead of the Labor Department’s weekly look at initial jobless claims. Economists expect first-time filings for unemployment benefits of 345,000 for the week ended Oct. 2. That would represent a decline from the prior week’s 362,000 new claims. The government issues its September employment report Friday. ADP’s look at private sector hiring trends last month, released Wednesday, came in stronger than expected.

3. McConnell wants to give Dems time to act alone on debt ceiling

  • McConnell late Wednesday said his debt ceiling offer would give Democrats time to use their majorities on Capitol Hill to craft a bill to raise the borrowing limit on their own without Republican votes. The deadline to take action on the debt limit and avoid a U.S. credit default is Oct. 18. If Democrats accept McConnell’s offer, lawmakers will again face pressing deadlines to fund the government and raise the debt limit before heading home for the holidays.

4. Biden to tout Covid vaccine mandates for large companies

  • President Joe Biden on Thursday is set to visit Chicago to meet with United Airlines’ CEO and local Democratic leaders as he touts his decision to impose Covid vaccine mandates on employees of large firms. Biden last month ordered all federal workers and contractors to be vaccinated, with few exceptions. For private employers with 100 or more workers, he proposed requiring employees to be vaccinated or tested weekly.

5. George Soros’ fund owns ‘some’ bitcoin, CEO of the fund confirms

  • Soros Fund Management, the asset management company founded by billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros, has revealed it owns the cryptocurrency bitcoin. The family office owns “some coins … but not a lot,” Dawn Fitzpatrick, CEO and chief investment officer of Soros Fund Management, said in an interview at a Bloomberg event this week. While lower Thursday, bitcoin has staged a comeback in recent days, trading above $54,000.

2021.02.04 14:44 bigbear0083 2/4 Thursday's Stock Market Movers & News

Good morning traders and investors of the StockMarket sub! Welcome to Thursday! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Thursday-

5 things to know before the stock market opens Thursday

1. Dow, S&P 500 look to extend their rallies to four straight days

  • U.S. stock futures rose Thursday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 looked to add to their three-session winning streaks. The Nasdaq on Wednesday dipped after two straight days of strong advances. The Dow and S&P 500 eked gains Wednesday following rallies Monday and Tuesday as the Reddit-fueled retail trading frenzy dissipated.
  • GameStop was once again volatile, finishing up nearly 2.7% at $92.41 per share Wednesday but still down 71% from Friday’s close of $325. In last week’s 400% surge, shares reached an all-time intraday high of $483 each. GameStop rose modestly in Thursday’s premarket.
  • The Labor Department is set to release its weekly look at jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect 830,000 filings for initial unemployment benefits for the week ending Jan. 30. That would be down from the prior week’s 847,000. The government reports its January employment report Friday. ADP said Wednesday 174,000 jobs were added last month at U.S. companies, more than triple expectations.

2. Ken Frazier to retire as Merck CEO at end of June

  • Merck Chairman and CEO Ken Frazier will retire effective June 30. He’ll be replaced as CEO by company CFO Robert Davis. Frazier, 66, will become executive chairman for what the drugmaker described as a “transition period to be determined by the board.” Frazier, one of the few Black corporate leaders in the United States, has served as Merck’s chief executive since January 2011.
  • Frazier’s retirement was announced Thursday morning shortly before Merck reported fourth-quarter earnings and revenue that fell short of estimates. Per-share profit was $1.32 on $12.5 billion in revenue. Merck forecast full-year 2021 earnings between $6.48 to $6.68 per share, which were higher than analyst expectations. Dow stock Merck was little changed in the premarket.

3. Apple and Hyundai-Kia pushing toward deal on Apple Car

  • Apple shares rose nearly 2% in Thursday’s premarket, the morning after CNBC reported, according to multiple sources, the tech giant is close to finalizing a deal with Hyundai-Kia to manufacture an Apple-branded autonomous electric vehicle at the Kia assembly plant in West Point, Georgia. The so-called “Apple Car,” which is being developed by a team at Apple, is tentatively scheduled to go into production in 2024, though people familiar with the talks said the eventual rollout could be pushed back.

4. Klobuchar unveils antitrust reform that would impact Big Tech

  • Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., unveiled a sweeping antitrust reform bill Thursday, setting a tough tone in her new role as chair of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust. If enacted, it would bring significantly more risk to companies like Facebook and Alphabet-owned Google, which are already facing federal lawsuits, and to any dominant firm seeking to acquire another company. House antitrust subcommittee chairman David Cicilline, D-R.I., has similarly called for extensive reforms that would impact Big Tech.

5. Biden signals flexibility on Covid stimulus

  • President Joe Biden encouraged Democratic lawmakers to “act fast” on his $1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue plan but also signaled flexibility. Changes he indicated he would consider include limiting proposed $1,400 direct payments to Americans with lower income levels, which directionally could draw support from Republicans who want a much smaller package. Biden told lawmakers in private comments Wednesday he’s “not married” to an absolute number for the overall bill but wants them to “go big” on pandemic relief and “restore the soul of the country.”

2015.05.21 00:59 moneymule Up over 30K this week on $MNGA and $ISR. Here's the rest of my watch list:

Have been holding $MNGA and $ISR for over a year each now, it's been great to see some momentum finally. Both are primed for great long term returns, so I'm not selling my positions any time soon. But these are the other companies on my watch list:
KBIO, ONCY, and MNKD.
Check StockTwits every day for PR leaks on these babies before open. Read the news that rallied MNGA and ISR this week on ST both the night before.
