2023.05.31 00:04 JoshAsdvgi The Dawes Act of 1887

The Dawes Act of 1887

The Dawes Act of 1887
(also known as the General Allotment Act or the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887),
Authorized the President of the United States to survey American Indian tribal land and divide it into allotments for individual Indians.
Those who accepted allotments and lived separately from the tribe would be granted United States citizenship.
The Dawes Act was amended in 1891, in 1898 by the Curtis Act, and again in 1906 by the Burke Act.
The Act was named for its creator, Senator Henry Laurens Dawes of Massachusetts.
The objectives of the Dawes Act were to abolish tribal and communal land ownership of the tribes into individual land ownership rights in order to transfer lands under Indian control to white settlers and stimulate assimilation of them into mainstream American society, and thereby lift individual Native Americans out of poverty.
Individual household ownership of land and subsistence farming on the European-American model was seen as an essential step.
The act provided that the government would classify as "excess" those Indian reservation lands remaining after allotments, and sell those lands on the open market, allowing purchase and settlement by non-Native Americans.
The Dawes Commission, set up under an Indian Office appropriation bill in 1893, was created to try to persuade the Five Civilized Tribes to agree to allotment plans.
(They had been excluded from the Dawes Act by their treaties.)
This commission registered the members of the Five Civilized Tribes on what became known as the Dawes Rolls.
The Curtis Act of 1898 amended the Dawes Act to extend its provisions to the Five Civilized Tribes; it required abolition of their governments, allotment of communal lands to people registered as tribal members, and sale of lands declared surplus, as well as dissolving tribal courts.
This completed the extinguishment of tribal land titles in Indian Territory, preparing it to be admitted to the Union as the state of Oklahoma.
During the ensuing decades, the Five Civilized Tribes sold off 90 million acres of former communal lands to non-Natives.
In addition, many individuals, unfamiliar with land ownership, became the target of speculators and criminals, were stuck with allotments that were too small for profitable farming, and lost their household lands.
Tribe members also suffered from the breakdown of the social structure of the tribes.
During the Great Depression, the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration supported passage on June 18, 1934 of the US Indian Reorganization Act
(also known as the Wheeler-Howard Law).
It ended land allotment and created a "New Deal" for Indians, renewing their rights to reorganize and form their self-governments.
The new policy intended to concentrate Native Americans in areas away from encroaching settlers, but it caused considerable suffering and many deaths. During the nineteenth century, Native American tribes resisted the imposition of the reservation system and engaged with the United States Army in what were called the Indian Wars in the West for decades. Finally defeated by the US military force and continuing waves of encroaching settlers, the tribes negotiated agreements to resettle on reservations.[6] Native Americans ended up with a total of over 155 million acres (630,000 km2) of land, ranging from arid deserts to prime agricultural land.[7]

The Reservation system, though forced upon Native Americans, was a system that allotted each tribe a claim to their new lands, protection over their territories, and the right to govern themselves. With the Senate supposedly being able to intervene only through the negotiation of treaties, they adjusted their ways of life and tried to continue their traditions.[8] The traditional tribal organization, a defining characteristic of Native Americans as a social unit, became apparent to the non-native communities of the United States and created a mixed stir of emotions. The tribe was viewed as a highly cohesive group, led by a hereditary, chosen chief, who exercised power and influence among the members of the tribe by aging traditions.[9] The tribes were seen as strong, tight-knit societies led by powerful men who were opposed to any change that weakened their positions. Many white Americans feared them and sought reformation. The Indians' failure to adopt the "Euroamerican" lifestyle, which was the social norm in the United States at the time, was seen as both unacceptable and uncivilized.

By the end of the 1880s, a general consensus seem to have been reached among many US stakeholders that the assimilation of Native Americans into American culture was top priority; it was the time for them to leave behind their tribal landholding, reservations, traditions and ultimately their Indian identities.[10]

On February 8, 1887, the Dawes Allotment Act was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland.

Responsible for enacting the division of the tribal reservations into plots of land for individual households, the Dawes Act was created by reformers to achieve six goals:

breaking up of tribes as a social unit,
encouraging individual initiatives,
furthering the progress of native farmers,
reducing the cost of native administration,
securing parts of the reservations as Indian land, and
opening the remainder of the land to white settlers for profit.[11]
The Act facilitated assimilation; they would become more "Euro-Americanized" as the government allotted the reservations. Native Americans held specific ideologies pertaining to tribal land, to them the land and earth were things to be valued and cared for, it represented things that produced and sustained life, it embodied their existence and identity, and created an environment of belonging.[12] In opposition to their white counterparts, they did not see it from an economic standpoint.

But, many natives began to believe they had to adapt to the majority culture in order to survive. They would have to embrace these beliefs and surrender to the forces of progress. They were to adopt the values of the dominant society and see land as real estate to be bought and developed; they learned how to use their land effectively in order to become prosperous farmers.[13] As they were inducted as citizens of the country, they would shed their uncivilized discourses and ideologies, and exchange them for ones that allowed them to become industrious self-supporting citizens, and finally rid themselves of their "need" for government supervision.[14]

The important provisions of the Dawes Act[2] were:

A head of family would receive a grant of 160 acres (65 ha), a single person or orphan over 18 years of age would receive a grant of 80 acres (32 ha), and persons under the age of 18 would receive 40 acres (16 ha) each;
the allotments would be held in trust by the U.S. Government for 25 years;
Eligible Indians had four years to select their land; afterward the selection would be made for them by the Secretary of the Interior.[15]
Every member of the bands or tribes receiving a land allotment is subject to laws of the state or territory in which they reside. Every Indian who receives a land allotment "and has adopted the habits of civilized life" (lived separate and apart from the tribe) is bestowed with United States citizenship "without in any manner impairing or otherwise affecting the right of any such Indian to tribal or other property".[16]

The Secretary of Interior could issue rules to assure equal distribution of water for irrigation among the tribes, and provided that "no other appropriation or grant of water by any riparian proprietor shall be authorized or permitted to the damage of any other riparian proprietor."[17]

The Dawes Act did not apply to the territory of the:[18]

Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Miami, and Peoria in Indian Territory
Osage, Sac, and Fox, in the Oklahoma Territory
any of the reservations of the Seneca Nation of New York, or
a strip of territory in the State of Nebraska adjoining the Sioux Nation
Provisions were later extended to the Wea, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Piankeshaw, and Western Miami tribes by act of 1889.[19] Allotment of the lands of these tribes was mandated by the Act of 1891, which amplified the provisions of the Dawes Act.[20]

Dawes Act 1891 Amendments
In 1891 the Dawes Act was amended:[21]

Allowed for pro-rata distribution when the reservation did not have enough land for each individual to receive allotments in original quantities, and provided that when land is only suitable for grazing purposes, such land be allotted in double quantities[22]
Established criteria for inheritance[23]
Does not apply to Cherokee Outlet[24]
Provisions of the Curtis Act
The Curtis Act of 1898 extended the provisions of the Dawes Act to the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory. It did away with their self-government, including tribal courts. In addition to providing for allotment of lands to tribal members, it authorized the Dawes Commission to make determination of members when registering tribal members.

Provisions of the Burke Act
The Burke Act of 1906[25] amended the sections of the Dawes Act dealing with US Citizenship (Section 6) and the mechanism for issuing allotments. The Secretary of Interior could force the Indian Allottee to accept title for land. US Citizenship was granted unconditionally upon receipt of land allotment (the individual did not need to move off the reservation to receive citizenship). Land allotted to Indians was taken out of Trust and subject to taxation. The Burke Act did not apply to any Indians in Indian Territory.

In 1922, the General Accounting Office (GAO) conducted an audit of 12 reservations to determine the severity of fractionation on those reservations. The GAO found that on the 12 reservations for which it compiled data, there were approximately 80,000 discrete owners but, because of fractionation, there were over a million ownership records associated with those owners. The GAO also found that if the land were physically divided by the fractional interests, many of these interests would represent less than one square foot of ground. In early 2002, the Department of the Interior attempted to replicate the audit methodology used by the GAO and to update the GAO report data to assess the continued growth of fractionation; it found that it increased by more than 40% between 1992 and 2002.

As an example of continuing fractionation, consider a real tract identified in 1987 in Hodel v. Irving, 481 U.S. 704 (1987):

Tract 1305 is 40 acres (160,000 m2) and produces $1,080 in income annually. It is valued at $8,000. It has 439 owners, one-third of whom receive less than $.05 in annual rent and two-thirds of whom receive less than $1. The largest interest holder receives $82.85 annually. The common denominator used to compute fractional interests in the property is 3,394,923,840,000. The smallest heir receives $.01 every 177 years. If the tract were sold (assuming the 439 owners could agree) for its estimated $8,000 value, he would be entitled to $.000418. The administrative costs of handling this tract are estimated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs at $17,560 annually.

Today, this tract produces $2,000 in income annually and is valued at $22,000. It now has 505 owners but the common denominator used to compute fractional interests has grown to 220,670,049,600,000. If the tract were sold (assuming the 505 owners could agree) for its estimated $22,000 value, the smallest heir would now be entitled to $.00001824. The administrative costs of handling this tract in 2003 are estimated by the BIA at $42,800.

Fractionation has become significantly worse. As noted above, in some cases the land is so highly fractionated that it can never be made productive. With such small ownership interests, it is nearly impossible to obtain the level of consent necessary to lease the land. In addition, to manage highly fractionated parcels of land, the government spends more money probating estates, maintaining title records, leasing the land, and attempting to manage and distribute tiny amounts of income to individual owners than is received in income from the land. In many cases, the costs associated with managing these lands can be significantly more than the value of the underlying asset.

2023.05.31 00:03 SonicBurstX Find Your Flame lyrics because Rose wouldn't stop to give Cyril makeovers

We won't back down, we won't
(Yeah, yo)

I'm here to go beyond my limit, not to compromise
And you can tell me if I mean it, looking in my eyes
Cause I've been waiting for my moment to strike
So come close
Let me show you what it's like, yeah
You can try to stand in my path, but you're gonna regret it
I'll be the one that last laughs, while I'm making my exit
Cause this is only for the strong of heart, nod if you get it
And no matter what the outcome, you better accept it

I CAN CUT RIGHT THROUGH STEEL
I CAN BURY THE BLADE
SO DON'T DOUBT FOR A SECOND
JUST GET OUT OF MY WAY
YOU CHEAT AND YOU STEAL
I'M NOT LETTING IT GO
SO TAKE THIS AS A LESSON
CAUSE IT'S ALL THAT WE KNOOOOW

Will the whole world know your name
When we dance with destiny?
I've been there and I've seen it
I'm never gonna stop believing
You'll find your flame
Oh, we can save the day
THE DAY

We won't back down, we won't
(Yeah, alright!)

It's like I'm seeing double vision, take a seat, I'm on a mission
We got everything to gain (everything to gain, yeah)
To become everything you're not, you just give it all you've got
And take the pleasure with the pain, yeah
I can feel my fire awaken, no time for being complacent
If there's a dream on the horizon, you know, we gotta chase it
And when we get to where we're going, then we start the invasion
Best me, nah, you must be mistaken, hey

You know I'll turn you to rust
Grind you right down to dust
You thought you were the best
Well, you haven't met us
I'll bring fire and rain
Call me the hurricane
I'm not letting it go
Cause it's all that I know

Will the whole world know your name
When we dance with destiny?
I've been there and I've seen it
I'm never gonna stop believing
You'll find your flame
Now, here we go, it's the end of the show
Hear them, they're calling your name
Cause in the end, it's you and your friends
You'll find your flame
GO!

[Guitar Solo]

Now, here we go, it's the end of the show
Hear them, they're calling your name
Cause in the end, it's you and your friends
You'll find your flame...

2023.05.30 23:53 Inevitable_Ad9188 Visiting a restaurant in my city

Visiting a restaurant in my city
Visiting a restaurant in my city i notice something in our society, something that everyone have in their cultures. Whenever we heard the word “etiquette” we relate it with rules that we have to follow depending on the place we are staying on, so with that in mind we are not being rude with anyone or bothering the people. Therefore we will be talking about a couple of rules that the people have to follow in a restaurant in order to not be rude. This investigation was realized in the city of Loja and even though this rules are not written, is very well know by the people as if it was natural for them. 1. Be polite whenever it comes to ask for service: when we try to ask for our food we can’t just yell out loud for it, we have to wait for our turn and figure out if the people are not too busy. 2. In some places the tip is a sign of respect: in the USA is common to leave a tip for the restaurant as a sign of respect, and some places in other countries also have this type of culture. 3. Don’t eat with the mouth open: The visual of the mouth with the food eaten is pretty disgusting and some people dislike the sound of it, try to avoid it in order to not bother anyone. 4. Respect for every one of the attenders: there is too many people who thinks that the attenders are his slaves because they are the client, but not in every case the customer is right, don’t forget to be polite with everyone to avoid a spit in your soup. 5. Wait your turn and don’t bother other customers: not everyone want to have a long conversation, some people are only there because they don’t have too much time so try to be quick in your orders and respect the line.

2023.05.30 23:46 SkinnySkins I subscribe to tons of literary newsletter emails and their advertised books in the newsletters aren't always my cup of tea, but the most recent bookriot newsletter suggesting the weirdest UFO book I've ever seen is something else entirely and I had to dig deeper into it. This looks like a cult.

I apologize if this isn't the place to post but not only do I want to discuss this, but I want to know if anyone else who subscribes to bookriots newsletters got this to confirm I am not losing it?
In one of today's bookriot newsletter featuring their most recent articles there's a book advertised which is a normal occurrence but upon closer look there's something strange happening here...
Image of the beginning of the of the newsletter with the first ad (Image description, a photo of the beginning of the bookriot newsletter and the date with a banner advertisement to an audiobook of a book called "gathering of the forces of light by Benjamin Creme" and a tagline that shows "UFOS are here to help!")
Second image of the larger advertisement later in the newsletter (Image description, a larger advertisement that gives more info to the book above as well as a link below it to suggesting sci-fi books)
At first glance due to the fact there's a suggestion of sci-fi books underneath it I thought that this was just some sci-fi book, and clicked and was curious about it. and uhhhhh apparently it is very much not sci-fi
The blurb from the website you click is this:
"This is a book about UFOs, but with a difference. It is written by someone who has worked with them and knows about them from the inside. Benjamin Creme sees the presence of UFOs as planned and of immense value for the people of Earth.
According to Creme, the UFOs and the people in them are engaged in a spiritual mission to ease humanity's lot and to save this planet from further and faster destruction. Our own planetary Hierarchy, led by Maitreya, the World Teacher, now living among us, works tirelessly with our Space Brothers and Sisters in a fraternal enterprise to restore sanity to this Earth.
Creme shows how all the planets in our solar system are inhabited, but on physical levels beyond human sight, the so-called etheric planes. The spacecraft are constructed on the same principle; they too are in etheric matter and have complete control of energies in space. Our Space Brothers are responsible not only for crop circles, but also for preparing the way on Earth for a new technology of light which will give us unlimited power from the sun. When we banish war for ever and are endeavoring to live in right relationship, that technology will be ours.
For the Spiritual Hierarchy of both our own and the sister planets of our system, right human relationship involves the end of competition and the beginning of an era of co-operation with -- sharing, justice and freedom as its hallmarks.
The book also addresses the emergence of new and more inclusive forms of education, which will be needed as we experience a huge shift in consciousness and a growing awareness of the richness of life ahead, unfettered by the stranglehold of commercialism and the dominance of market forces.
According to the author, the truth will soon be apparent for all to see, awakening humanity to their own divinity and the establishment of the rule of spiritual law on Earth."
After that introduction I had to search deeper into the organization that made this book and what on EARTH I was even reading. I found the link to their website (https://www.share-international.us/) and this legit looks like a cult. Did bookriot just advertise a cult???? What is even happening here???
I dug a little deeper and found a page on their website that is apparently summarizing the book above and it just creates so many more questions. Here's the page for those curious. (https://www.share-international.us/learn/ForcesOfLight/)
My personal favorite part of that site is the way it turns into anti-nuclear energy. A very wonderful touch.
Did..... bookriot just advertise a cult in their newsletter? Like, am I missing something here or is that what just happened???? I googled the author of this book and there's articles proclaiming that this man was a cult leader as well as ex-member testimony asserting so. It got even more absurd as apparently this organization proclaimed a random British economist (Raj Petel) as the messiah and he had to deny it publicly. ABC News article from approximately 10 years ago, The Guardian article from around that time as well
I thought this was just some random sci-fi book yall...... bookriot... please... what is this.... who approved this advertisement..........

2023.05.30 23:42 ihatetollroads Guy in Black Volvo Nearly Hits Me Going 185+ km/h on 401W @ Morriston

TLDR entitled psycho goes 185km/h+ and makes my blood pressure go slightly higher than that as well.
This past Sunday I was going to pick up someone in Guelph and was driving West on the 401. As I was about 13-14km away from the Morriston exit (which was the exit this psychotic driver got off at), I was in the 2x-solid-line separated HOV lane and cruising at a solid 137kph, as the speed of traffic was already pretty fast (~125) but I also don't want to get my license taken away because of bad luck. I was driving a 'green vehicle' which is why I was in the HOV btw.
A dude in a black Volvo SUV (early-to-mid-2010s) magically appears in my rearview mirror in the 2 seconds I don't check it, and he's immediately like Bill Cosby on my ass, staring at me in my mirrors with intent. He must've been doing 160/170+ just to catch up to me that quickly. I look in my rearview and put my hand and shoulders up like "what do you want?" because I can't legally leave the lane and I'm also not gonna do more than 50 over the limit because of some guy's ego (I sped up to accommodate it at first). So I wait until the line is about to break, and I signal to turn out and begin doing so. Unfortunately, our intrepid friend decides to veer out of the lane without signalling, before the line actually broke and while I was beginning my merge, and I'm forced back into the lane as he speeds past me, straddling the two lanes to my right and glaring at me with this deadpan "I'll kill you right now" type of old guy stare (all the while going 160, 170+, not looking at the road for a very slowly counted block of 4-5 seconds). Bald, all the caucasity in the world, and wearing a white shirt and cop shades. Pitbull lookin' ass.
As this was happening there was a brief moment of open highway (re: safety) so I tried to match his speed to see how fast he was going. I had to bow out. He easily passed 185km/h as he was beginning to approach the next wall of traffic (closing distance wasn't a thing to this guy apparently?). I couldn't believe my fucking eyes how fast he was willing to send it into the cars ahead of us, and then he spent the next 13km weaving in and out of traffic while I mostly just cruised up and around the left lane. All that work from him to get ahead, only for me to follow him (legally) the whole way and snag his license plate as he did a classic rapid 3-lane-merge towards his exit at Morriston just before Highway 6 north. Guy would've been fine if he just used the fast lane the whole time lmao. Guess something important was going down at home.
Whoever's abused dad is driving a black Volvo SUV with plates CYCY 661, he needs his ego checked and his license revoked. I prefer not dying while I'm running errands for people on a Sunday afternoon. I'm willing to drive pretty fast but if it was some normie going 115km/h hogging the lefthand lane, this guy might've driven them right off the road. Idk what comes after stunt driving but whatever that is, that's what this guy was doing, and in a fuckin family vehicle of all things. My biggest takeaway from this encounter is that Volvos are unbelievably versatile vehicles.
Please don't be an asshole on the roads. We all have lives to go back to and accidents as a result of this behaviour are highly avoidable. Can't believe how many top-heavy SUV drivers think they'll be able to get away with this type of shit forever, too.

2023.05.30 23:34 TheBostonBean Was I in the wrong?

Hey guys, I’m new to this sub but I just wanted an opinion.
So today I was driving down the road and I was coming up on an intersection. There was a cop behind me with his lights and sirens on. I was in the left lane and there were already cars stopped in the right. The cop got up right behind me and made some pretty rude hand gestures because I had stopped at the light (the light was green) so that he could go around me in the turn lane to my left as there was no one there.
The cop got up right behind me really close and wasn’t moving. I honestly didn’t even know what to do. I just started driving again and then pulled over to the right where there were no cars stopped. The cop ended up speeding past me and flipped me off as he passed.
The only reason I stopped in the lane I was in was because I wanted to avoid a collision with another car by trying to merge into the right lane where cars were already stopped. And I didn’t go into the turn lane because he could have easily gone into that lane and went through the intersection without a problem.
I’m just wondering if I was in the wrong and I figured this would be a good sub to come to.

1 Rays 0 Everyone's favorite myliobatiformes played another good week of baseball with the return of Tyler Glasnow. The Rays took an exciting series against the Dodgers after recharging during a weird mid-series rest day against the Blue Jays. Wander Franco is making his case to be starting SS in the All-Star Game, just make sure you don't accidentally vote for one of his brothers. It's still super weird to watch the offense carry while the bullpen struggles, but with guys coming back it should be f--, wait, Fairbanks is hurt again. 39-17
2 Rangers +1 Series wins against both the Pirates and Orioles the last week has the club holding the 3rd best overall record in the majors. Go Stars. We're still having fun. 34-19
3 Braves -1 3-4 last week and we started this week off with a loss against the Oakland "Triple A's" which is not good Bob. On the VERY brightside, we saw Soroka pitch from an MLB mound for the first time in almost 3 years. He pitched well and we need him to perform as we are absolutely depleted by injuries. Riley is starting to come to life. We hold a 4 game lead on the scond place MARLINS. Our division doesn't want to take advantage of our recent struggles, that's fine by me. 32-22
4 Dodgers +1 33-22
5 Orioles -1 A few weeks ago, I said if the Orioles can go at least .500 in May then they are for real. They wrapped up a winning month yesterday and have three games to go. They continue to play well, even though they lost the series against the Rangers, and seem to play better away from Camden Yards. They did, however, send Grayson Rodriguez down this week to AAA. He just has some stuff to figure out. He was getting crushed in his past few starts, and it was the right move to make. This solidifies the fact they need a frontline starter if they are going to make a serious push to get to and make noise in the post-season. 34-20
6 Astros 0 Jose Abreu finally hit a home run. All is right with the world. Unless the world's name is Lance McCullers Jr., who had another discomforting setback and we have no idea when we will see him this year. I still blame his hair. Anyway, our other Jose hit a grand slam at MMP this weekend. Where have we heard that before? 31-22
7 Yankees 0 It certainly would’ve been nice to take 2/3 from Baltimore, but it’s very hard to be mad at the Yankees’ month of May. Since May 1, the Yankees are 18-9, a huge turnaround from a .500 April. As we enter the dog days of summer, the top of the AL East is tightening up, but the Yankees don’t face either of the teams ahead of them again until July. The Yankees have to keep playing at this pace, and a Stanton (and maybe Rodon??) return could seriously help that. 33-23
8 D-Backs +1 The Diamondbacks had a decent week, barely missing out on a sweep of the Phillies before dropping a series to the Red Sox. The offense gets on base but has been allergic to driving in RISP, and the starting rotation continues to be a merry-go-round, as none of the rookie pitchers on the team seem to be able to string together several good starts in a row without getting blown up once or twice. 31-23
9 Blue Jays +1 The Jays' first series win since May 14th pulled us out of a bad-vibes tailspin the likes of which this fanbase hasn't seen since, well, the last time everybody freaked out over a losing streak. The usual suspects' continued confounding slow starts (Manoah, Kirk, Varsho, etc) have dropped us 10 games back from TB, last place in the best division in baseball. And YET, hope springs. Berrios (3 or fewer ER in 8 of his last 9 starts) finally appears to be pitching to the level expected of him when he was signed, and is pumping out quality starts along with Gausman and Bassitt. Kikuchi has slipped as Kikuchi does but has been very solid for a #5. We don't have the depth to send Manoah down for some needed alone time, but he's pushing it. Vladdy has been scuffling, Springer is heating up, and Bichette is an MVP candidate. With a little bit of lucky regression to the mean with abysmal RISP numbers, this team is just a few turns away from being very good. As long as we don't have to play too many games vs AL East teams. That should be fine. 28-26
10 Twins -2 28-26
11 Mariners +4 Just what the doctor ordered - 6-1 in the homestand so far. Some momentum is just what this team needs before two big series with teams they're chasing for playoff spots. If the M's can handle business over the next week, they'll be right back in the thick of it. Bryce Miller, do your thing. Up next: 3 vs. Damn Yankees, 3 @ Globe Life ParkFieldStadiumGardensArenaDomewhatever they're calling it these days 28-26
12 Red Sox -1 Scoring four runs total while getting swept by the Angels isn't a great look. This team is in many ways aggresively mediocre, always making sure that every win streak is followed up by an equally painful gut-punch. This is mainly due to the reliance on the offense to carry us to victory (2-17 when scoring <=3 runs), when the bats get cold, you're safe to turn off the game. Whitlock returning from injury and Bello/Sale both stepping up their game in May (2.74/2.42 ERA respectively) are good steps towards this team becoming Actually Good™ though. We'll see what June brings us... 28-25
13 Brewers -1 Taking two of three from the Astros was nice. Barely avoiding a sweep from the Giants was not so sweet. Milwaukee has some issues with hitting in "close" situations. The Brewers either lose after having multiple opportunities to tie it up, or get absolutely blown out. 28-25
14 Angels 0 Did I travel out of state and all the way to Anaheim just to watch the team get swept by the Marlins? Perhaps. Was that objectively worse than what the Reds voter is going through? It's impossible to say. 29-26
15 Mets -2 The Mets, who I proclaimed to be "good at baseball" last week, ended up dropping 2 of 3 against the Cubs and doing the same against the Rockies. I just don't know what to believe anymore. The only thing I know for sure is that Francisco Alvarez has got that fucking dawg in him, he's GOATed, he's him, he's on fleek, he's poggers, he's a proper legend, he's got an .885 OPS, he's a top bloke, he's got swag, he's fresh, he's Gen Z Mike Piazza, he's lit, he's making me feel old because he was born after 9/11, he's Francisco Alvarez. 27-27
16 Gigantes +4 The Giants won yesterday, but strictly talking about last week, they went 5- 2 on an extremely acceptable road trip without any off days. Defeating two competent teams like the Twins and Brewers should feel good. On both losses, they gave up 7 runs, on every win they gave up 3, 1, or 0 runs. So, they threw two games out of 7 – that’s allowed. In the bad news department, Joc, Joey, and Thairo all not expected back until June 6th. I think we’re okay with more Bailey Patrick and this also means another look at unpredictable slugger David Villar. Slater continues covering for Joc. Let’s look a the numbers: 13th in MLB in Run Diff (+6 spots), 12th in RS / G (+6), 15th in RA / G (+2), 23rd in Bullpen ERA (+5). All of that is good and especially the bullpen is promising recently. The Giants continue at home vs the Pirates and wrap the homestand with 3 against our orange and black brothers in Baltimore. 28-26
17 Pirates -1 Would I have been happy to learn on Opening Day that the Pirates would be around .500 at the end of May? Yes. But if you told me they got there after starting 20-8 I would be pretty disappointed. Here's hoping the pendulum swings the other way in June. 26-27
18 Marlins +3 Yet another appearance of sweepy, the meme that was promised. After a rough series against the rox, we sweep the angels to settle into the third NL wild card spot. Our starting pitching is coming along after a bumpy start to several of our starters. Eury perez is gonna be a stud, just wanna remind yall. Also, shout out to Jorge Soler, who has been crushing baseballs the last week and change. In other miami sports related news, boston is the first city ever to lose two game 7s at home in both the NHL and NBA playoffs in the same year. Go Heat and go Panthers! 28-26
19 Phillies -2 After losing 2 to the Diamondbacks and going down 5-0 in the 3rd game, the Phillies season looked as bleak as it could in late May while only being 4 games under .500. However, the team rallied and Trea Turner tied it in the 9th before going onto win it in 10. Then, they went down to Atlanta and split a 4 game series. It could've gone far worse. The Phillies most pressing need is now seemingly a 5th starter who isn't a guaranteed loss, as this week they trotted out Dylan Covey, who hadn't started a game since 2019. He got 2 outs and gave up 7 runs. He took the spot of Bailey Falter who, after a surprisingly productive 2022, started the season 0-7. Falter is the far better option, but Dave Dombrowski will likely be looking to upgrade until Andrew Painter can finally return. This week, the NL East road trip continues with their first 3 games against the Mets and 3 in Washington. Here's hoping June Schwarber shows up again this year. 25-28
20 Padres -1 My Dad tells me it’s ok that the Dad’s lost 2 / 3 to NY; the Dodgers lost 2 / 3 to the Rays! The Pads aren’t in the same stratosphere as the Dodgers right now, though. 5 games under .500, 10th in the NL standings, 3 games out of the last wildcard slot. Of course there’s quite a bit of time to change it, there’s plenty of time to go on a run, or a slow and steady good month to gain ground. With every day that passes however, that goal becomes a bit harder to reach; I don’t think Pads fans were hoping for a wildcard spot by the end of this season, but that’s the position the team has to get to before even thinking of catching LA. The Padres are 4th in the NL West, and only a half game out of last. 24-29
21 Cardinals -3 2-2 @ CIN; 1-2 @ CLE; 0-1 v KCR; another struggle week for the Cards. The fandom's been a bit kneejerk because of two good weeks before this. Their mistake. I'll say it a third time, the Cards playing at or beyond their expected level doesn't change the rotten FO. Yeah Marmol's pretty close to being fired, that's not a fix when the problem is John Mozeliak. 24-32
22 Tigers +2 The most fun part of this past week has been watching the resurgence of Akil Baddoo. His energy is infectious and adds an exciting dimension to the lineup. As we head into the last few days of May, Baddoo has sported a .302/.405/.508 slash and a 155 wRC+ this month. Although he's still been hitting mostly in the 6 hole, if this keeps up he might find himself much higher in the order real soon. This week: 2 more vs. TEX and 3 at CWS. 25-27
23 Guardians 0 The Guardians won a series this week. I would like to see them win some games by more than one run, but it's clear this season, we have to take what we get. 24-29
24 Cubs -2 Another terrible week for the Cubs, as a promising series win against the Mets was followed up by an embarrassing sweep against the Reds. The starting rotation was terrible, and the bullpen was somehow worse. Fans have had enough of David Ross, and Jed Hoyer is starting to come under pressure. Barring a dramatic turnaround, the Cubs will be sellers for the 3rd trade deadline in a row 23-30
25 Reds +1 Okay guys, I’m here to be calm this week. I have been told by my wife’s attorney, Tom, that they are “aware” of my online activity regarding our impending divorce, so today let’s have a nice, calm, relaxing, perfectly fine, good old fashioned talk about Reds baseball. The Reds are just sorta middling. They’re not great but they’re not horrible. Unlike my marriage. Our starting pitching has resgressed, just like my marriage, and it’s very unfortunate to see, because our bullpen has been quite reliable unlike my wife. We still can’t hit home runs for some reason, but overall unlike my marriage the Reds on the upturn. There, are you happy Tom? I didn’t mention all the crap that’s been going on lately. I didn’t mention how I had to leave the Motel 6 I was at because I found a used needle in the bathroom, and by the way Tom, I know that you’re trying to use that as evidence that I can’t take care of my kids. I don’t even know who’s needle it was, it was like wedged behind the toilet. Believe me, I only found it because I dropped my phone while using the toilet. It wasn’t even visible, I had to like get on my hands and knees and crawl behind the toilet to grab my phone. So it puts the image in my head of some heroin addict or whatever sitting behind a toilet at a Motel 6 trying to get high, which honestly that just seems like an even worse situation than the one i’m in. Do I think it’s a coincidence that the day after I left the Motel 6 because of this, you’re requesting a drug test from me before I can see my kids? Huh Tom? How did you know about this incident Tom? The only people that know are the Motel 6 staff I notified, I don’t think any police showed up, so either you questioned them like i’m some criminal, or you’re following me. I know you’re reading this Tom, you’ve made several references to my posts on the baseball power rankings insinuating it’s me writing them, and yeah Tom you’re right it is me, can everybody in the comments give praise to Tom for being a regular Sherlock Holmes? Yeah everybody come on, Congratulations Tom! You’re the man! I’m gonna let you go home and fuck my sister, oh wait Tom I forgot, YOU ALREADY ARE. When you get home tonight tell Caitlin her brother says hi. Alright, I think I got that out of my system. Anyway, I think once more of our prospects are called up, probably around June or July, we may get hot and finish more closely to .500 than initially thought, and if this division stays like it is, and those prospects can deliver on their promise, it's entirely possible we could be in contention for the division. But a lot of this is gonna depend on if our Starting Rotation can get things back under control. Also we swept the Cubs so lol. 24-29
26 Nationals -1 Week after week, I expect this Nats team to take a nose dive. I expect them to crumble and slip into a double-digit losing streak but it just isn't happening. They lead the NL in batting average (.267), are third in OBP (.330) and have the lowest strikeout rate in MLB. They still have their own troubles, but this team is alive (4 games out of a WC spot) 23-31
27 Rockies +1 I don't have time to write a real blurb this week so you don't have to print this. Actually, you probably don't read these, I'm not sure anyone really reads them anyways besides the Reds guy's life breaking down, and this will probably get printed regardless. 24-31
28 White Sox -1 Liam is back. I can't overstate how great that is to hear. He is one of the best people in the game and it's nothing short of amazing for him to be pitching in May. If you missed it, it was recently revealed that he had stage 4 lymphoma, not an early stage. He started treatment just over 3 months ago! Nothing on the field matters for this team, but at least there's that silver lining. 22-34
29 Royals 0 As of the time that this blurb is being written (Monday at 11:39 AM), only two teams in the majors have a record below .400. Yup, the Royals are there with the A's. I suppose the positive is that the team figured out that they can get rid of useless players in Hunter Dozier, but they still have a lot more work to do. 17-38
30 Atléticos 0 The A's have given up 10+ runs in a game 7 more times than they've won. It's a mix of bad roster building (the bullpen), under-preforming vets (Ramon Laureano 74 wRC+, Tony Kemp 38 wRC+), injuries (Seth Brown and Paul Blackburn are just now returning), and no fans in the stands since 2019. It's soul crushing to watch and the national media's constant condecention toward this particular poor team and it is even more annoying this year. 11-45

2023.05.30 23:25 DustinKW Looking for input

Good Afternoon,
I am new to reddit and also a new to writing with intention of other people reading it. I would like to share some of my short stories and am open to constructive input. Please do not be negative or judgemental. I write because I enjoy it and I interested if anyone else does. The intention of these stories is to be include in a sort of memoi cookbook
thank you
Sugar High
They say that once you quit drinking your body craves sugar, I know this is very true. Before I went to rehab I really did not like sweets very much, except ice cream I always loved ice cream. Recovering addicts rely on sugar like Milli Vanilli relies on vocal tracks. Every “meal” provided the minimal amount of nutrients a person needs to stay alive. Up to this point in my life I was naively unaware of the many food types that come in powder form. There was a week that we had salt, it was amazing! For every meal there was a buffet of day old pastries laid out on each table. If you saw something you liked while waiting in line you had better grab it. Rehab cafeterias have some of the same rules as high school- it definitely matters where you sit, and a fight erupting over a cupcake was not unheard of. These self anointed kings of the streets, tough guys turn into little bitches, over the last Unicorn sprinkle cupcake at snack time. The only thing different between a group of 70 grown men and a group of 70 teenage girls, is the amount of body hair, and the maturity levels are identical.
For the better part of a year and half just being awake was enough of a reason to be drinking. There was always a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I wouldn't have enough booze, so I carried my own everywhere I went. The thought process that decided the size of bottle I would bring depended on whether this would be my only source of booze or it was a companion bottle to accompany the cocktails I was having publicly. I would hate for people to think I was drunk and order a Vodka martini with a Jack Daniel’s chaser, I am a lady so I did my shot in the powder room. Grocery shopping was a half Pint, even though I was also buying two 1.75mL bottles for the next couple days but I couldn't wait till I got home. Work was usually a pint and half, a pint from the strip club liquor store and a couple of shots at the bar across the street when that was gone. The word addiction never crossed my mind; I was a fabulously highly functional alcoholic.
When I admitted to myself and a room full of strangers the extent and severity of my addiction, I could finally see myself, in the faces of my peers in that room and what I saw was terrifying. For the first time in my life I did not like myself, definitely did not love myself. Up to this point in my life I had an unwavering belief that I was amazing at everything I did. I knew that I succeeded because I was so confident and I was so confident because I succeeded. I felt like I had just been punched in the gut, and I lost my entire self worth in that one minute. Alcohol had taken away from me the very essence of who I am. Those early days were hard. I had to rediscover myself, I am still discovering myself. I did find my confidence again.
Geno I got sober together and it has been so great, there was a part of both of us that had been lying dormant for a little while and when it came out it came out in force. In the first month of sobriety we got to see our new niece Raelynn for the first time, around four months we had started a cookie business, restructured our lives, and by month six we had started making our 2 year plan to grow our cookie business into a national brand, and I started writing a book, yes this one.
Geno has always been the baker in the family. I started dabbling in baking right after I got out of rehab, I could not believe how much extra time I had now that I was not drinking. Geno had made an Oreo Cheesecake and it looked like so much fun. A few days passed and I wanted to make a cheesecake, so I started with a simple cheesecake, a few days later there was an apple crisp, then a couple dozen mini cheesecakes, 1-2-3-4 cake with buttercream frosting, not as easy as the name may suggest, then a couple dozen chocolate chip cookies, most of these recipes were straight forward and required no creativity and I was starting to get bored… Ooh something shiny… then Mini Lava Brownies with Chocolate Ganache Drizzle happened. *mic drop* You are welcome!
(LAVA BROWNIES WITH GANACHE DRIZZLE)

Sunset Sandwiches:

The year prior to checking myself into rehab was one self- created dumpster fire after another. One does not usually end up in rehab after a wonderfully stable year. I spent most the year running away from the people who loved me most, especially my husband, Geno. Geno and I have been through some tough times in our relationship but this year was especially awful. I believe Queen Elizebeth II called it an “Annus Horribilis”, very fitting since this was the year Windsor caught fire and I spent the entire year trying to burn my life to the ground. I was in such a dark place and didn't even realize it, it was very scary and lonely inside myself and my outward side was the complete opposite. This duality in my life caused me to create a villain and sadly that villain was Geno. At one point in May I attempted suicide and almost succeded, Geno found me on the couch and called an ambulance, I woke up 2 day later in a mental hospital on suicide watch. The scariest part about that was I had no recollection of wanting to hurt myself or even thinking it through, all I remember is seeing darkness. I came home after seven days and I really thought I would slow down on the drinking and maybe I did for a little while but not long enough to remember. I remember thinking that I was loved becaused all my friends and family were so devastated at the thought of losing me, that feeling was lost again to the booze soon after.
That summer was a rollercoaster of huge fights, extended time away from each other, terrible things were said, and in October it all reached a climax and I threatened to leave Geno and went to stay with my cousin Mandi in Wisconsin with the rest of my family. My aunt Kristy and Grandma were exactly what I knew deep down they would be, honest as fuck! My grandma told me that I was “difficult, had lived a very charmed life and I should suck it up, go home and be happy with my husband”. My Aunt Kristy was brutally honest. She sat me down and asked me “What was going on?” when I started to tell her in my sugar coated everything will be fine, she called bullshit on me. She called out my drinking and told me I didnt even “resemble her nephew.” She also told me it was time to get my shit together. Kristy fought a long hard battle with addiction and has been happily sober for many years now. She said “Honey, I missed a lot of years of my life due to addiction.” She has now forced me to feel real emotions and I am open-mouth sobbing, she goes on, “You are going to lose them too or worse you will lose everything.”
It was the first time I was forced to see myself and the disaster I had become. A week later I flew home and checked myself into rehab. It was difficult to remember how to be happy with Geno, I had to retrain myself to love him the way he deserved to be loved and to see how much he loves me. In those first weeks we spent all day everyday together, it was amazing, for the first time in a long time we were not yelling and screaming at each other. One beautiful day we decided to go to the beach for a sunset picnic, it was the first time we had gone to see the sunset since we had quit drinking. The sunset was the most beautiful orange and glorious sunset, I was finally seeing my Geno, and he was all the light I needed. That sunset I fell madly in love with my husband again, oh and we had some sandwiches!

2023.05.30 23:20 Carrie_Boo PLEASE HELP ME!! I'm being stalked by something nonhuman... PART TWO

Part One:
https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/13v4lju/please_help_me_i_think_im_being_stalked_by/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
Part Two:
It came again. Last night at exactly 10pm.
I don't even know how I'm going to tell you what happened. Or why I'm telling you. I guess I'm just hoping that somebody somewhere will help me to find a way to make it stop.
I packed my bags last night, shortly after writing to you guys on here. I thought that if I could get away from this place before 10pm, I would be able to find sanctuary away from this 'thing'. It took me ten minutes to grab everything that I own, shove it in a suitcase and throw it in the back of my truck, but deep down I knew it wouldn't let me leave.
The tyres on my banged out fiesta had been slashed completely. All four of them! Ripped to shreds like a beast had used them as a chew toy. There was an overwhelming smell of petrol as I walked around the car, desperately thinking of what I could do. Not wanting to admit the real and present danger of the situation I was in, I retreated back to the cabin and searched for my phone. It wasn't much use as I hadn't been able to get any signal at this place for the last three months. It really was an 'unplugged' adventure.
There's a land line in the Main Reception!
Resisting the urge to cry, I forced every bit of bravado I could muster up inside and walked slowly to the Main Reception building, giving every faint noise my complete attention.
The door was locked.
In my haste to leave my cabin today, I had totally forgotten that the season was now at an end and that all of the teens would have been packed on to the coaches earlier this afternoon ready to depart their woodland adventures. This would only leave myself, Roger and Pendle, as skeleton staff for clean up and pack away.
Maybe Roger will have a key?
Walking to Roger's cabin would be no small feat. He preferred to be sited in the more secluded area of the forest, away from the 'reckless, annoying brats' as he called them. Making the journey to his cabin would take at least half hour and there was no obvious path through the trees. It was already 9.30pm and that would mean that I would be getting there just before that 'thing' comes. I know Pendle, our caretaker, didn't sleep on the grounds on the night. He preferred to make an hours commute down the mountain to the little shack that he called home. He was dead against staying overnight, even when we were short staffed and he was offered double pay to be Night supervisor. I thought that was weird at the time, but now I'm wondering if he knows more than he is letting on?
I grabbed my torch and decided that I'd walk to Roger's cabin. I would be safe there and if I was quick, I would get there in good time. Roger wasn't a big man, but he was still company and if I needed anything, I needed company.
About ten minutes into the walk through the overgrown pathway to Roger's cabin, I began to feel myself trembling. The air seemed to be cooler in amongst the trees and I found myself making small clouds of steam with every breath. I folded my arms in front of me and cursed myself for not dressing more appropriately for the cooler temperatures. My ripped jean shorts and vest top were more suited to a summer beach party than a late night hike and I looked like one of those ladies that would offer to wash your car at a service station for charity. It's funny, even when you're in the midst of the most dangerous situation you've ever been in, you still find yourself judging your own aesthetics.
As I walked deeper into the forest, I started to feel like the trees were getting closer to me, enveloping me in an abyss of darkness. They seemed to be growing larger, making me feel small and isolated in their shadows. I quickened the pace, noticing that it was now getting closer to that dreaded time.
Then, in the distance, I saw a welcoming orange glow from the window of Roger's cabin. For a moment I felt safe. Untouchable. And I smiled.
I ran the last 150m or so and began frantically knocking on Roger's door. It didn't take long for him to open the door and pull me inside, with a look of deep concern on his face.
"What's going on? Are you Ok? What's happened?' He blurted out questions with such urgency and such genuine concern, that it made me cry. I seriously opened the floodgates and grabbed on to him with every bit of strength that I could find within me. I didn't realise just how much these past few occurrences had exhausted me. Now that I was safe, I didn't want to explain, I just wanted to stay safe.
Somewhere along the line, Roger had realised that I wasn't ready to divulge the reasons as to why I had turned up hysterically at his cabin door at night, and he stopped asking questions and just hugged me. I wanted that moment to last forever, however my eyes deceived me and began to search Roger's lounge area for a clock. And when I found it, that all too familiar sharp stab of fear penetrated through me. It was 10pm.
Roger must have felt my body tense up completely as he grabbed my arms and held me outstretched in front of him.
"Please tell me what is going on. I can help you", he said in such a calm, soothing voice. He forced a smile through the worry as his eyes pleaded with me to let him in.
Just as I was about to explain, there was a sudden loud bang from the kitchenette area.
"IT'S HEREEEEE, IT'S HEREEEEEEE......." I shrieked as I grabbed on to Roger's arm and pulled him towards me.
Another loud bang drove through the silence. This time from down the hall.
"Oh God, Roger, you need to HELP MEEEEEE!"
An even louder bang came from the bedroom...then another...then another....until bangs surrounded us, each from different areas of the cabin. Sometimes on the wooden walls, then on the windows, then on the roof. It was as though a buffalo stampede was encircling the house and even running over the roof.
I screamed and held on to Roger so tightly as he began to shake and look in the direction of each bang. Then there was one final bang and the front door flew open.
It was the 'thing'. He stood right in front of us and stared, as if he was calculating his next move. His head twitched rapidly from side to side as a foamy substance fell slowly from his drooping lips. His pale, elongated face almost shone through the darkened background of the forest behind him and I found myself staring at his long, thin limbs and his spiny stature. I didn't dare move a muscle as I felt Roger's grip on my arm become tighter.
The 'thing' glided slowly towards us until his face was mere inches away from mine, then he quickly shot his head in Roger's direction and slowly opened his mouth. An extremely high pitched scream-like noise was unleashed from the blackness of his mouth, making Roger fall to the floor in fear.
I just stood there. I didn't help.
I didn't help as the 'thing' raised it's long bony arm and then thrashed down against Roger's skull, tearing away a strip of flesh from his forehead that dangled around his eye socket.
I didn't help as Roger screamed, as the second blow ripped his eye ball out of the socket and tore away two of his fingers that had been used as a shield from the attack of the unnaturally sharp talons.
I just stood there as Roger crawled on the floor, gargling on his own blood and gripping his neck after that humanoid creature had buried it's nails into his throat and scraped through his jugular.
Before he died, he looked up at me. He looked right into my eyes and it looked like he was asking 'why?'
I just screamed. And screamed. And screamed.
The 'thing' didn't even look at me. It just turned away and glided out of the front door. Before it exited completely, It raised its arm in front of it and I could hear what sounded like a slurping noise. I didn't even want to think about what it was doing, but I'm sure that what I heard was that humanoid freak sucking Roger's blood off it's claws.
Then it was gone.
I don't know how long I stayed there, but I must've said sorry a hundred times. I didn't mean for this to happen. I didn't understand why it was happening. I still don't.
But I do know that I can't get anyone else involved in this nightmare. I need to deal with this myself. I can't risk anyone else getting hurt.
But maybe Pendle knows something?

2023.05.30 23:20 drd2989 Subaru - Shakes at highway speeds when turning

I have a 2012 Subaru outback. I noticed a few months ago knocking when going over bumps, likely my front driver side control arm (will post picture in comments). Recently I've also noticed when traveling at highway speeds - when my wheel is turned to the right like when changing lanes or when the highway is curved to the right I get this bad shaking in the vehicle.. Is this related to the control arm? Not sure what else it could be but not sure how the control arm could do this as well
Thanks in advance!

2023.05.30 23:00 petersonmd Sold our house and downsized to an apartment. We’re so much happier.

tl;dr: A few months ago my wife, 18 month old daughter, cat and dog sold our 2400sqft house and moved into a 1050sqft apartment. Everyone is happier, we have zero regrets and realized homeownership was the cause of a lot of our stress.
A little backstory, my wife and I have owned single family detached homes for the last 11 years. We were in our most recent home for 3 years. It was a hundred year old American four square style house in a street car suburb of a medium sized city. We had shops, restaurants and a great elementary school within walking distance. A separated bike lane one street over leading downtown. Sounds like millennial heaven right? We always thought we would be in a house and neighborhood like that if not that exact one.
After our little one had a lead exposure scare (her levels are ok now) my wife and I really evaluated what we wanted out of our living situation. We both realized that even before we had our lead scare, all the stuff that comes with owning a home, especially an older one, stresses the fuck out of us. We dumped so much money and time into projects and chores and we didn’t really have anything to show for it. So we decided to sell. Once we said it out loud, a weight was lifted.
Now that a few months have passed i feel like I have a better sense of what I want for my family. I grew up in a single family detached house so for me that was always the default for raising kids. Now, I’m not so sure anymore. I’m not ruling out owning another house, I’m just not going to force it. We lucked out on the timing buying that house. Our interest rate was crazy low and it was right before the market went bonkers. So our rent is more expensive than our mortgage but when you factor in all the extra shit you have to pay for and higher utilities the price difference isn’t much different. If we put our equity into a high yield savings account it’s basically a wash. More importantly we’ve gained so much more time to spend together as a family and lost so much stress.
I know everyone’s situation is different and I’m lucky enough to be able to own a house these days. I also realize this is very middle class American centric. But think it really important to do what’s right for you and your family, not what you think you should be doing. If that makes any sense.

2023.05.30 22:55 Comprehensive_Ant984 I'm just realizing now that I think I might have been in an abusive relationship, and IDK if I'm just being dramatic or not

Basically what the title says.. I (then 30F) was in love with this guy (28M) completely and thought he was it for me and that we'd be together for the rest of our lives. But things went south, fast. And bc I grew up in an abusive home, I truly thought that it was just how things go, and that I just needed to tough it out and figure out compromises and solutions, and we'd be okay again. We eventually broke up because he decided he didn't want me anymore (and moved his new, very recently turned 18-y/o GF in to his new apartment less than a month later). But as much as I'm horrified looking back, I can't help but wonder if maybe I'm just being dramatic and bitter because my heart was broken. And I feel like my frame of reference for what is and is not acceptable is just so totally skewed from my upbringing, that I feel like I can't even trust myself to know if what he did was abuse or not or just nasty fighting. I'd really love an objective, outside perspective from someone who doesn't know either of us and isn't going to be swayed one way or the other.
The biggest examples were:
- I was crying in the car while we were fighting, so he pulled over, got out and came around and opened my door so he could laugh in my face and mock me for being upset
- We were arguing at his family's beach house one night and I was crying again (I did that a lot in this relationship, embarrassing to admit) because I couldn't understand why he was being so mean with his words, and he got fed up and held me in place and poured a bottle of water over my head to make fun of me
- when things were tough he said he wanted an open relationship so he could sleep with other women. I said I was fine with that, as long as the same rules applied equally to us both and I could see other people as well, and he said if I did that I'd be a whore and he'd leave me
-we got into a fight about politics (he was a DT supporter and I was not), and he got so angry that I wouldn't agree with him that he punched my closet door and broke his hand, and then he and his family blamed me for it for provoking him
-he would repeatedly tell me that i was stupid or my thoughts/opinions/beliefs were stupid and that i should be embarrassed (for example, he was a huge fan of Joe Rogan, and I can't stand the guy and find him to be racist and misogynistic). Point being, any time I disagreed with him, his answer was that it must be because I was dumb and incapable of logical thinking (note that I hold a doctorate-level degree and work in my field, he holds a psychology degree and worked in his family's pizzeria)
- He always wanted to do an*l, and I just was not into it and repeatedly told him no. One night he asked and I again said no I'm not okay with it, and we went to sleep. I woke up to his fingers inside of me, and freaked out and asked him what he was doing. He said he was just curious and it was my fault for constantly denying when I knew he really wanted it. I tried to talk to him about it the next day, and when I said that it kind of made me feel really violated, he flipped and said "stop being so dramatic, it's not like I raped you"
- he repeatedly told me to unalive myself when he was angry with me at the end of our relationship
Now, I'm not an idiot, I know that none of the above is healthy. What I don't know is whether it rises to the level of abuse. And it scares me, because I know what my mom etc. did when I was a kid was abusive, and I know that my instinct is to believe that it's my job to change and stick it out and make it work. And I don't want to keep repeating those patterns if that's what this is. Like, should I have left instead of trying to make it work? And if so, how should I have known when things reached that point? And at the same time, I have to wonder if the problem is me. I'm still single several years and two crappy situationships later, and I'm the last of my friends or family who isn't in a committed relationship. So maybe he was right and I am just too much and too difficult to love and need to change that. But I literally just don't know. This has so thoroughly screwed my head and idk what to do with it. And I really would just really love an outside perspective, because I've been spiraling in my own head and it just isn't fixing or changing anything. All I want is a healthy supportive partnership, and I just need to understand if/how I'm standing in my own way of that, if I'm doing so.

2023.05.30 22:53 -Lady_of_the_Vale- Possibly drove past a stopped school bus in NC

Hi, first off I feel incredibly bad about this and I'm never going to let myself do this again.
As I was driving down a three lane road (two ways with a turning lane in the middle) I think was putting out its sign right as I drove past from the opposite direction. This was also a spot where vehicles often slow or stop to make a right hand turn into a parking lot. The bus driver honked at me right as I passed and I immediately realized what happened. I pulled over into a parking lot because I felt to bad to continue until I gathered myself. No kids had gotten off the bus yet and I don't know what to do now.
First step is obviously to start trying to anticipate if a bus is going to come to a stop.
What else can I do? I see that passing a bus is a class 1 misdemeanor in NC. Am I going to get a court summons in the mail?

2023.05.30 22:47 Mother-Coconut-5271 AITA for kicking out my best friend?

So I 33F met one of my best friends 37F at my baby shower of all places. A friend I went to high school with was pregnant at the same time as me so she came to my shower and brought her sister. Well her sister and I hit it off and we instantly became best friends. She had literally became my ride or die. We always were having girls night at my house or just going places and doing things together. She always included my daughter which made me love her even more. Well as the years went on she came to me when he and her other half separated needing somewhere to live. At this time I had moved in with my grandparents after my split. I was helping take care of them and they put a roof over mine and my daughters heads. Well when this friend called me she was bawling and I felt so bad for her cause she quiet literally had no where to go. I stuck my neck out for her and went to my nanna asking if my friend could move in. There was rules and what not that my friend agreed to so that very week she moved in. Keep in mind it was only a three bedroom house and my grandparents were downstairs and myself and daughter were upstairs in the other two rooms. I aloud my friend to move into my room with me where she also shared my bed. We had sleepovers before so it didn't bother me one bit cause she was my friend. Well as the months went on I was having to put extra food into the house which was not in the rules my nanna gave her. She was suppose to be paying rent, supplying her own food and necessities. I couldn't afford to pay her way. I tried to help her but finally enough was enough when she went to the bathroom and left the bathroom door open and then proceeded to yell and cuss at my 7 yr old daughter for standing in front of the bathroom door while speaking to me. (bathroom was right as you walked into my bedroom) I sent my daughter downstairs with her nanna and proceeded to yell at my friend. One thing she wasn't going to do was cuss or raise her voice to my child. It wasn't her fault that my friend didn't close the bathroom door which she should have done. Well a few weeks go by after the incident and I was hanging out with her other two sisters at my moms. And she started acting weird. Every time I left the house she tried to go with me. She even tried to go with me on my date with my fiance at the time. I quickly shut it down. Well a week later I was having a girls night at my moms with her other two sisters and this is when all hell breaks loose. I told her younger sister some stuff my friend had been saying about her cause it didn't make since to me. Well it caused them to fight. I wasn't trying to start anything but what I what I told the younger sister had me worried which is the only reason I brought it up. They fought and I fell asleep that night to wake up the next morning to my friend texting my MOM of all people. She was saying some stuff about me using her vehicle. I used it twice when mine was in the shop which she told me I could use. I offered her gas money and she told me not to worry about it cause she knew I was struggling with money myself being a single mom. So I got extremely pissed cause she was bringing it up after she told me not to worry about it. I texted her and went off. It was then brought to my knowledge that she was telling her WHOLE family I was pregnant. I was in shock. I had confided in her that I could be but asked her not to say anything til I knew for sure so I could tell my fiance. Well I found out I wasn't. She was with me when I took the test. So I had to clean up her mess again. I cussed her out over text and told her that if she wanted to be petty I could be petty. I told her I didn't have to stick my neck out for her or let her use my room. So from then on out that she could start sleeping on the couch. Well I finally make it home and come in to her on the couch and she moved all her stuff out of my room. I went straight to my room and did a movie day with my daughter. Now I'm a firm believer in not arguing in front of children so being a adult I texted her and told her I thought it was best for her to find a new place to live. She said she was working on it. I left it alone. Well then she wanted to argue with me cuss at me. She hadn't worked but three weeks the five months she lived with me so I got ugly. I told her she needed to be out by monday so that gave her two days to find somewhere to go. Keep in mind her mom lives on the same block i do, only a few houses up from me. She started packing her stuff and tried taking some things of mine. I called her out and took my things back and went back to my room. I sent my daughter downstairs with her grandparents just encase things got ugly. She proceeded to start throwing my things at me. I come around the corner yelling at her and she went to throw glass plates and bowls at me. I slapped them down to the floor and went at her. My grandfafther come up behind me telling her she needed to leave immediately. So then she proceeds to cuss at my 75 yr old poppy. It set me on fire again so I went at her again. I was pulled back and my nanna got in it. By this point im raging. My nanna tells her to leave and she can come get the rest of her things tomorrow. I turn and walk away and that when I'm told i'm bleeding. Her throwing those dishes at me and me reacting caused me to have to get stitches in both hands and arms and I broke my thumb shielding myself. Her sister came over and took me to the doctor. Thankfully when I got back she was gone. After she was finally out I realized she stole my daughters piggy bank that had over $400 in it and her whole Disney DVD movie collection that I had been buying since my daughter had come home from the hospital. anyways I hadn't spoken to her in months after this and her sisters kept trying to wedge me back with her. Well my friend apologized but I refuse to have her in my life anymore. She hurt me and stole from the one person I love most in this world. Am I the asshole for telling her to fuck off?

2023.05.30 22:39 wildchild404 Stopping the 1.1.2 update?

Hi, first post here so I'm hoping I'm following all the rules. I just have a quick question since I've seen this topic pop up a few times but none of the situations are the same as me.
I've been playing on version 1.1.1 and avoiding the 1.1.2 update since it came out. I just had the feeling the dupe glitch was gonna get patched and I was right. When I saw the pop up, I turned my switch to airplane mode. Now, I'm wondering, if I accidentally press the "update now" button by accident from the pop up, will it update even though I'm offline? Same if I fully close the game, will it automatically update? I have this nasty feeling that the update material is already on my switch and it's just waiting for me to close the game to fully install it. I'm scared to test it because I won't be able to restore it back to ver 1.1.1. Please help me lessen my anxiety!

2023.05.30 22:34 RecognitionWooden732 Question about pedestrian crossing rules (and a little vent about a stupid situation)

So, just witnessed something super moronic just now. Was at the corner of River Rd/Bradley Dr. a car on Bradley, stopped at the sign. Then pulled forward to make a turn onto river. While the driver is waiting, a pedestrian with walking a dog comes along, intending to cross. The pedestrian then decides to walk in front of the vehicle waiting to turn and plants their feet in front of it, shouting, "I'm not moving till you back up" and something along the lines of, this is a crosswalk you can't be here or something, again and again. Like, this persons belly was pretty much touching the hood they were so close to the hood and they were dead serious. So the car backs up. But the pedestrian is not happy because they did not back up past the stop lines, saying "you need to stop at the stop sign". So the car does. And the pedestrian finally continues on. This person was lucky she didn't do that to a road ragey person, cause there are plenty on this road alone. Just so foolish and entitled to do.
It made me think what the actual rule is for that. Is the car actually required to back up when a pedestrian comes later to cross? Cause in my lifetime, people either go around the car, or wait till the car is out of the crosswalk. This car did the right thing before the pedestrian came. Does anyone know? Thanks.

2023.05.30 22:26 SuellioAlmeida 50 Sim Racing Mistakes From Beginner to Pro Levels

This is the ULTIMATE Sim Racing Mistakes List. If you want to become the best racing driver you can be, this is for you. If you just want to have fun and don’t care about your sim racing performance, then skip it without going to the comment sections saying "I just wanna have fun" lol. Some things are just not going to be easy to solve so get ready to get out of your comfort zone.
Ready? Ok, let’s go.
1- DO NOT use the ideal racing line! This completely fucks up your vision technique and you create terrible habits. Train your eyes and learn how to scan the track!
2- Do NOT use Driving Assists! Should I really explain this one?
3- Do NOT use the Chase camera. Onboard cameras like hood, bumper or cockpit view will be much better for performance and precision.
4- Look forward! Try to aim where you want your car to go. Scan the track, don’t just keep looking right in front of your hood. Your eyes have to be looking to the next target every second. Ever heard of Guitar Hero? The good players look at the notes as high as possible, as soon as they show up on the screen!
5- Don’t get right away in a race without practicing! Learn the track and be consistent before racing to make sure you improve as a driver in the future and prevent getting bad habits!
6- Don’t turn graphics up if you can’t keep your FPS high! High FPS is essential, and if you’re stuck with 60hz, turn V-Sync off to minimize input lag.
7- Don’t get used to a wrong posture just because you started with it first and it feels natural! Make sure your seating position is proper to prevent getting hurt in the future!
8- You’re not making sure you’re using ALL the track. When I say ALL the track, I mean AAAAAALL the track. To the centimeter! You may think you are but you are NOT. Align the white lines or grass to something in cockpit view to improve your track usage consistency.
9- STOP changing your line or angle expecting the car to behave exactly the same way! Find a line, align the car with the entry kerb or something and DO THAT lap after lap!
10- STOP Braking Randomly! Find braking references to the meter and brake there lap after lap!
11- Stop holding your breath while driving into corners! This makes you tense up more than necessary and your driving will be worse. Try to breathe normally while driving. Depending on how bad your habit of tensing up is, you should be slower for a few days until you get used to it.
12- Stop releasing the brakes quickly from full pressure to zero! You’re just popping up the front tires and understeering terribly, and you’re losing many seconds per lap because of this. Learn how to trail brake!
12 - STOP STRANGLING THE STEERING WHEEL! You’ll hurt yourself and have a much less fun experience driving. Instead, use the Light Hands Technique and feel what the car wants from you.
13- Stop doing blind laps! Just doing 500 laps without analyzing your driving is the easiest way to become a terrible driver. If you only believe in talent and nothing else, you might be creating bad habits that you’ll carry forever in your driving. FIND THE INEFFICIENCIES!
14- Stop applying the brakes too slowly. There are places to be smooth, but brake application should not be slow. You should take no more than half a second between initial application and peak pressure.
15- You’re using the wrong settings because you were lazy to research the right ones! Take some time to make sure everything is perfect, and that includes steering range, linearity of the pedals, deadzones, calibration, force feedback!
16- You’re using the wrong Field of View. Use a FOV Calculator and find your ideal one. You can increase it a bit, like 10% more, but keep it close to the ideal to be more precise, even if it feels a little bit too slow!
17- Stop keeping the steering fixed while turning into the corner! You should only keep the steering fixed if your speed is fixed, and this is very rare in motor racing! You should almost always increase your steering on corner entry and decrease your steering on corner exit, continuously!
18- KEEP THE HEEL OFF THE PLATE WHILE BRAKING! Unless you’re driving with an extremely light brake pedal, you should feel the pressure on the ball of your foot, and it should naturally lift your heel just a little bit!
19- STOP turning in with 100% brakes and relying on ABS. Learn how to control the brakes with finesse. Drive cars with ABS as if they didn’t have them.
20 -Stop looking directly at other cars while racing! Your peripheral vision is good enough to know they’re there. Keep looking for useful places on the track to know where you are.
21- Stop giving way too much space when fighting for position. This makes your pass actually more dangerous as you will most likely run wide on the exit and hit your fellow competitor.
22- DO NOT downshift randomly! Pay attention to the timing of your downshifts, they’ll play an essential role in the car balance on all stages of the corner, and have an impact even on exit, of course!
23- Stop practicing if you’re tired! If you’re plateauing and not improving at all, don’t let the frustration consume you. Take a break, watch a team mate driving, get up, stretch, have some sleep!
24- Don’t turn in fast while trail braking. Your front tires don’t have infinite grip! If you’re braking, turn-in slowly. If you’re coasting, changing direction, or accelerating, turn in fast.
25- Do not drive alone all the time! Try to compare your driving with teammates, help them improve and let them help you improve. This is a win-win for everyone.
26- If you go off-track, PLEASE don’t try to desperately come back on track. If you keep turning too much back to the inside, you’ll spin right away!
27- Stop releasing the brakes in a High Downforce car consistently! You should release it slowly on a straight line as you lose downforce, but then more quickly as you turn in, so your braking trace should have TWO lines, the second one being steeper!
28- Stop releasing the brakes too much on a straight line in a low downforce car! You should keep your brakes fairly flat on the same pressure, so release no more than 10% in that phase! Start actually releasing the brakes only when you start turning in!
29- Stop driving the same way in cambered or off-cambered corners! If there’s more grip, you should force the car more, if there’s a hill, or a crest, or off-camber, you should ask for less rotation, less deceleration, less acceleration!
30- Don’t coast. Having no brakes and no throttle should be a rare situation. For 99% of the cars, you should be trailbraking until you get back on power to get proper rotation and be able to brake later.
31- Stop driving purely through understeer. This means you’re not properly using the rear grip and carrying less speed through all corners. Rotate that thing!
32- Stop relying only on steering to rotate the car! Make sure you’re also consciously using engine braking and trail braking as tools for rotation!
33- Please don’t change your line if you’re the slower car in a multiclass being overtaken by a faster class. Let them do the job and prevent crashes!
34- Don’t forget to practice your pit entries! This can save previous seconds and penalties in endurance events!
35- Stop being under the limit for the sake of consistency. You’re in a simulator, if you’re practicing, abuse the car as much as possible. You’ll learn when sliding. You will NOT learn when not sliding.
36- Stop getting on half-throttle and understeering like a pig mid corner. Find the traction limit and stay there, so you keep the rotation where it was before!
37- Stop trying to gain rotation on throttle! This is one of the most dangerous ways to spin. You’re probably doing it because the car is understeering on entry and you’re compensating that. What about making the car rotate more on entry in the first place?
38- Do not turn in slowly in flat-out corners! You should turn in slowly if you’re braking, but much more quickly when accelerating!
39- Stop changing the car setup to solve your bad habits. Try to correct the balance of the car through driving inputs before you make changes. This will help you be more liked by your teammates in endurance events.
40- Don’t increase the brake pressure mid-corner too much! Although in some cases, you have to do it to compensate for a mistake on corner entry, trying to gain rotation on the brakes mid-corner should be avoided. Use it as a sign that you made something wrong on turn-in. The perfect line has your brake trace going DOWN and only DOWN all the way to the apex.
41- Applying the brakes too fast while coming from another corner. If you start braking as fast as if you were in a straight line but with the car completely unloaded on one side, you’ll instantly lock up the unloaded side or get into ABS and unsettle the car.
42- DO NOT go straight in between compound corners! If you’re sacrificing the line of a corner to improve the next one, use the lateral grip in every inch in between to improve your exit speeds!
43- Stop using the throttle on corner entry! Only a few cars with open-differential require maintenance throttle to control the balance. In most cars, braking and accelerating are like asking them to do opposite things at the same time. And the result is a lazy and unresponsive car.
44- Do NOT turn the steering linearly on corner entry in Low Downforce cars. If the car is low downforce, it’ll have V-shaped lines, which means your steering trace should be progressive and exponential, not linear.
45- Stop relaxing and hesitating after turn-in oversteer, which makes you under the limit for a fraction of a second before you turn-in again mid-corner. Try to make micro-corrections on entry but immediately come back to using the rears, so you keep them busy at all stages of the corner!
46- Stop correcting oversteer with Active Countersteer, where you’re actively turning towards the outside. Let the force feedback do the correction for you!
47- Stop braking the same way in elevation changes! If the track is going up into a compression, sometimes you can brake up to 20% more, and if the track is going over a hill, sometimes you should brake even 50% less!
48- Stop doing the same lines in double-apexes in cars with different downforce levels! If the car is high-downforce, the distance between the apexes should be smaller, and if the car is low-downforce, the distance should be much bigger!
49- When accelerating, make sure you time the speed of the first vertical application to the traction limit from corner to corner. If the corner tends to be oversteery on exit, apply it a little bit slower, like over three tenths of a second, but if the corner tends to be understeery on exit, apply the throttle more quickly, like over one tenth of a second, to keep the car rotating!
50- When correcting oversteer on entry, focus on inducing understeer with the brake release by letting the rotation of the car be a trigger for your brake release. This will make sure your front tires are busy and optimal at all times while you manage the rear tires and oversteer with your pedal release!
If you want to be a good driver, write down the ones that you identified with, then put them to practice. You won’t magically improve, so get your shit together and be disciplined.
A bit of advertising on my coaching work: I have complete and detailed lessons ready to go on my online course, The Motor Racing Checklist. They cover all of these tips in-depth. The course has 1750 participants so far with incredible feedback from drivers of all levels. I’m also writing a book version of The Motor Racing Checklist that is being developed for years and is in its final publishing process with the editor.

I didn't expect to make one of these, but here we are. The last time we did a clues list for a non-Magic IP, I was barely familiar with the source material. Now I'm a little more familiar than last time, but there are still many details that I don't know. What I do know is that I'm looking forward to providing the clue results as they get spoiled. So, let's not waste any more time and get right to them!
