Headlines transcript:
Waltham resident Shelson Jules passed away on Monday 5/22, apparently from a gunshot that occurred about 1:30am near Lyman St. and Faneuil St. According to a gofundme set up to support his family, Shelson was also known as JJ and was a 22 year-old alum of Waltham High School. Waltham Police and the district attorney are investigating the shooting and so far no additional details have been made public.
This weekend is the first weekend a portion of Moody St. is closed to cars this year under the new "hybrid" plan that allows for outdoor dining but with more restrictions than in past years. Moody St. from High St. to Pine St. will be closed to cars Thursday evening through Sunday, as well as some holiday Mondays , from now through September 25. According to a WCAC article, business owners have mixed feelings about the new arrangement but 12 restaurants as well as the Game Underground have applied to use outdoor space.
A few more prospective candidates have pulled papers for this year's Waltham election. They include one more person who's been part of our Channel 781 News team-- Chris Hammer, who has helped us with video production, plans to challenge Councilor Harris in Ward 8. In addition Tammy Wong-Bigelow is the first challenger to pull papers for the School Committee race, Waltham Police Officer Paul Tracey has pulled papers for Ward 3, and elementary principal Stephen Duffy plans to run at-large.
Waltham Pride is happening next Saturday, June 3 on the Waltham Common. This is the third time in Waltham's history that we've had our own Pride event, and the second year on the Common. Some of last year's popular performers will be returning including Missy Steak, Evan Greer, Toast, Katie Gullotti, Rose Bello, and Zumba with Jen, along with a new drag performer Iris Laveau. Speakers will include community members from the middle school, high school, Brandeis, a local Church, and Waltham's recently formed Trans Alliance. That's 11-4 on Saturday and if you'd like to help out, there's still time to sign up as a volunteer. We'll have Nick Hammond and Amanda Kennedy on our debrief show to talk more about th event.
In this week's city council meeting, Councilors Bradley-MacArthur, Paz, and Darcy introduces a resolution recognizing Pride month and calling for a Pride flag to fly on the Common. The council voted to approve that without committee reference.
Also in this week's meeting Councilor Paz re-submitted the housing rights notification ordinance, and the council set a date for a citizen input hearing to take place Wednesday 6/21 at 6:30pm at Government Center. That ordinance was originally proposed by Watch CDC and would require landlords to give tenants in danger of eviction information about their rights. The new version Paz submitted includes language that also protects homeowners in danger of foreclosure.
Also in recent meetings, the city council shot down a proposal to make Waltham's building codes more energy efficient. The state sets standard that require new buildings or renovations to meet a certain level of energy efficiency, but municipalities can choose to adopt "stretch codes" that require a higher standard, which Waltham has done in the past. Councilor Bradley-MacArthur submitted a resolution to adopt the latest stretch codes, which was discussed at the Public Works & Public Safety Committee on 5/15. At that meeting Councilor LaFauci argued that the standards were too difficult to meet and would cost the city money by deterring people from renovating their homes. He said that "fossil fuels are not going away" and argued that it doesn't make sense for Waltham to take steps to address climate change if not all states and countries are doing it. The committee recommended the council file the resolution with prejudice, meaning they will not take action on it and no one can submit a similar resolution for at least a year. In the following meeting the council voted to do just that despite an effort by Councilor Bradley-MacArthur to send it back to committee.
Also at this meeting neighbors showed up to oppose a proposed lodging house on Robbins street that would provide shared bedrooms for about 20 people in recovery from addictions. That was sent to committee and we'll talk about that more on our debrief show.
A proposed solar plant in Lexington near the Cambridge Reservoir and the Waltham line was approved by the Lexington Planning Board on 5/17. The City of Waltham previously went to court to prevent developers from building an access road to the plant through a Waltham neighborhood, but lost. More recently Waltham neighbors organized to pressure the Lexington government not to approve the project. At the recent council meeting Councilor Darcy requested certain city department heads come to the next meeting to discuss.
There's no city council meeting this week but committee meetings will return June 5.

2023.05.30 21:11 eyerishdancegirl7 References in PA
I feel like I reach out to the board once a week, so I’ll probably ask this question once they respond to my latest question. I figured I’d ask here in the mean time…
I’ve worked at the same company for 4 out of 5 years since I graduated college. I briefly worked for another company for a little over a year from Dec 2020 to July 2022. I asked 5 colleagues from my current job (also the same job I worked at right out of school), because all of them are PEs and it made it easier on them (PA requires submission of a resume if the reference isn’t a PE).
I just re-read some of the forms and it states all work experience must have a reference. I didn’t bother asking my former manager because she doesn’t have a PE. Technically I have over 5 years experience overall, and 4 years from the date on my EIT, however, I’m wondering if the board won’t approve my application because of this?

2023.05.30 20:35 Sure_Science_7161 With the Reopening of the Carousel, the New York State Museum May Once More Go Around in Circles
After a relaxing European vacation with one of his employees, Mark Schaming, director of the New York State Museum, is back and ready to get to work. All who know the man will tell you that he's displayed new energy and ambition after Chris Churchill of the Times Union insinuated that he is unfit in his job as director of the New York State Museum. As Mr. Churchill writes:
The full-sized carousel, up on the fourth floor, has been closed for maintenance for years. The museum's famous subway car is also off-limits, with a sign telling visitors it's closed for repairs. Discovery Place, the building's hands-on learning center for young kids, is also closed.
Those aren't the only disappointments. The State Museum no longer offers a restaurant or any sort of fresh food, forcing visitors to line up at vending machines to quell their grumbling tummies. Some escalators and elevators are out of service. The museum, on the whole, feels forgotten.
From the imposing stone edifice of the Cultural Education Center, Mr. Schaming is cognizant of the cries of the people. This reporter can confirm from a recent visit that Discovery Place has reopened after only three years of closure. JP O'Hare, a spokesperson for the State Museum, explained the long closure, saying that "the pandemic forced us to rethink touchable exhibits."
Visitors to the newly reopened Discovery Place will see that the State Museum has taken to heart rethinking touching exhibits, as it is clear the room has been largely untouched after years of "rethinking" and "renovation." From a cursory glance, it seems to me that the only changes are the removal of all books, toys, puzzles, handouts, and staff.
Now, as a scattering of sources indicate, the New York State Museum approaches its pièce de résistance, the reopening of its carousel which has been closed since 2019. After much digging, it appears the cause of the closure was some minor damage the carousel experienced when it violently (and potentially lethally?) exploded during regular operation. Thinking it unsafe to have metal suspension beams swinging about and shrapnel flying as children rode the carousel, a repair effort was initiated.
The century-old artifact was ridden into the ground (or, technically, helicoptered into the air) once due to poor operating conditions, but the people of Albany ought feel confident that mistakes were learned from. Previously the carousel was operated nearly constantly and without proper care in place to keep the artifact balanced. Although unconfirmed, word is that now the carousel will be operated nearly constantly and without proper care in place to keep the artifact balanced. It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, but I call going in circles a carousel.
Fortunately for the carousel, it looks like staffing constraints will interfere with the planned constant operation of the carousel. This is being swiftly addressed by Mr. Schaming, though not by hiring new staff. Rather, as at least one source indicated, Mr. Schaming is currently interested in changing the job descriptions of people in different departments to include carousel operation.
It may seem strange that Mr. Schaming is reticent to staff his museum, but the reader must understand the important considerations behind these decisions. One must first be aware that in 2015 the New York State Museum received $14 million in funds for a massive three to four year renovation. As Paul Grondahl of the Times Union wrote in 2015:
The State Museum will undergo a $14 million renovation that will dramatically re-imagine the exhibits with dynamic technology, interactive displays and a fresh form of narrative storytelling.
When the work is finished in three to four years, it will represent the largest upgrade to the capital city's most popular tourist attraction since it opened in 1976 at the newly built Empire State Plaza.
The expected completion date is in the rear view mirror, and it's now common knowledge that the $14 million gas tank is mostly fumes. Although it has been difficult to unravel exact information, best evidence suggests that currently the State Museum has $5 million still in the pocket. It's time for tightening the belt, and part of that looks to be staffing cuts.
One may be concerned that Mark Schaming, director of the New York State Museum, is having difficulty performing his job. Fortunately the director of the New York State Museum is overseen by the Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education, who is also Mark Schaming.
One may then be concerned that Mark Schaming, director of the New York State Museum
and Deputy Comissioner of Cultural Education, is having difficulty performing his two jobs. Fortunately the director of the New York State Museum who is also the Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education is overseen by Sharon Cates-Williams. Ms. Williams, who herself holds the two jobs of Deputy Commissioner of Performance Improvement & Management Services (PIMS)
and Executive Deputy Commissioner, stated to Mr. Churchill on the matter:
I think he's doing a good job wearing two hats. It does not interfere with the core mission of the museum, and it's a decision that we stand by.
One may then be concerned that Sharon Cates-Williams, herself wearing two hats and self-supervising, may have some biases. Fortunately the Deputy Commissioner of PIMS who is also the Executive Deputy Commissioner reports to Betty A. Rosa, the Commissioner of Education.
Dr. Rosa has served as Commissioner of Education since 2021 when she, as Chancellor of the Board of Regents, elected herself Commissioner of Education. Unlike others, she gave up her former position as Chancellor of the Board of Regents upon her self-election. It is unclear how she feels about others who do not likewise content themselves with wearing only one hat.
Perhaps we soon will have an opportunity to ask Dr. Rosa. Although details are sparse, it has been indicated that Mr. Schaming is planning a victory celebration for managing to successfully reopen the carousel after four years. Specifics on the event and even the exact date have been infuriatingly kept under wraps, but it is speculated that Mark Schaming and Betty A. Rosa plan to celebrate this monumental occasion by giving speeches and riding on the carousel with elementary school students.
We can safely say that the sun is rising on the New York State Museum. After only four years the State Museum has managed to successfully "renovate" Discovery Place through the power of downsizing and is on the cusp of reopening the carousel under the same conditions which led to its prior destruction. With only $5 million remaining in the pocket and only running about five years behind schedule on a grand renovation, who knows what wonders we can expect in the years to come.

2023.05.30 20:22 seannestor Following departure of controversial pastor, Epworth United Methodist tries to rebuild - Toledo Blade 5/28/23
https://www.toledoblade.com/news/religion/2023/05/28/controversial-pastor-epworth-united-methodist-rebuild/stories/20230514024 A church doesn’t just implode overnight.
At Epworth United Methodist Church, founded in Toledo in 1894, members felt they lost power to their pastor years ago.
The sudden March closure of Epworth Preschool was the boiling point for concerns that had been simmering since the first formal complaint against then-pastor Stephen Swisher was filed in 2021.
Two years and a wave of recent filings later, Mr. Swisher left the church on May 1. Bishop Gregory Palmer of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church confirmed that Mr. Swisher voluntarily withdrew from ministry in the UMC and is no longer a United Methodist pastor.
The Ottawa Hills church is the largest United Methodist congregation in the Toledo area, though members said regular attendance has declined in light of recent disputes surrounding the preschool and church leadership.
Mr. Swisher
said in an April 23 interview that his decision was not related to the divisions within the church surrounding the preschool. He did not return phone calls and emails requesting additional comment.
Parents and congregants, however, say they see a correlation.
“Technically he's voluntarily leaving because the other option is he had to go to trial,” said Chase Peavy, a former Epworth Preschool parent.
Under the UMC Book of Discipline, if a formal complaint is filed for a chargeable offense, the bishop must conduct a review and implement a resolution.
“If a clergy person chooses, at any point, to withdraw from The United Methodist Ministry, the authority of the church ceases,” the bishop said in an email. That means the UMC can no longer adjudicate the complaints.
Formal complaints In 2021, a group of members sent a formal complaint backed by 98 signatures to Bishop Palmer, alleging “misconduct or unsatisfactory performance of ministerial duties” of Mr. Swisher. He arrived at Epworth in April, 2020, and restructured church leadership that November.
One complaint, sent on Nov. 10, 2021, “challenge[s] the legitimacy” of a Nov. 12, 2020, meeting that served as a charge conference.
The United Methodist Church instructs that churches hold an annual charge conference, which directs the church mission, budgets, and elects council members. Church members are to be notified of the time and place of a charge conference at least 10 days in advance through at least two means of communication, according to the Book of Discipline.
The complaint states that many church members were unaware of the charge conference because it “had not been announced in the Tower [newsletter], weekly bulletin, or by mail.”
Cindy Franklin, a former office staff member of 13 years, was acting communications manager during the fall of 2020.
“I am the sole person that wrote, printed, and published all publications and I was told specifically to REMOVE ANY WORDING of ‘Charge Conference’ from all publications,” Ms. Franklin wrote in an April 10 formal complaint to Bishop Palmer.
The meeting was instead marketed as a Thursday evening service with then-district superintendent Scot Ocke as the guest speaker, according to the
November, 2020, issue of the church newsletter. The
December issue offers a “charge conference update,” listing issues that were voted on, including “Lay Leadership Teams/Action teams alignment and assignments.”
Ms. Franklin said Mr. Swisher dismantled a few volunteer committees and rebranded the remaining ones as action teams. She was one of an estimated 50 individuals who had been removed from a committee position. Mr. Swisher also handpicked his personal leadership team, narrowing a 54-person administrative council to a 13-person leadership team, Ms. Franklin said, noting that “every change since then is null and void because the way he got his leadership is inappropriate.”
Epworth staff declined to comment on the record.
“The November 2021 complaint was dismissed after a plan was implemented,” Bishop Palmer wrote in a statement. “The concerns in the complaint were addressed. They included but were not limited to deploying Annual Conference staff with particular skills to assist Epworth staff and congregation in dealing effectively with some internal matters.”
Lynne Saunders, who’s been an Epworth member for around 15 years, said the conference’s response was to “send in a team to coach [Mr. Swisher] and leadership on how to treat people.”
In August, 2022, letters were sent to District Superintendent Amy Haines with concerns related to Epworth Preschool finances and leadership.
The silence from UMC leadership in response to these messages, Ms. Saunders wrote in a Nov. 20, 2022, email to Ms. Haines, was “deafening.”
A number of letters and formal complaints, one of which attached 90 additional documents and exhibits, were again sent to the conference in March and April, following the sudden March 9 firing of director Jane Lyon and March 10 closure of Epworth Preschool.
Two complaints have been filed with the Ohio Attorney General, dated March 24 and April 27, alleging potential fraud and potential solicitation, according to the obtained documents. The office could neither confirm nor deny whether an investigation is or could be underway.
The United Methodist Church requires an annual audit of each of its churches. Bishop Palmer said in his joint statement with Ms. Haines that a 2022 audit is in the process of being conducted by an outside firm.
Epworth Preschool Former members of the preschool board, which was abruptly disbanded in August, 2022, say $110,000 of preschool money is unaccounted for. They shared some financial documents with The Blade.
“It’s always been about the money, control, and power of the money,” said Ms. Saunders, who was preschool board chair.
Multiple members of Epworth’s staff declined to comment on the situation at the preschool.
Records show that the school’s account balance at the end of calendar year 2021 was just more than $63,000. Melinda Davis, former school board treasurer, said statements not provided to the board until the summer showed a starting balance of $0 for January, 2022. The account balance at the end of 2022 was $47,000, she said, with a starting balance of $0 in January, 2023.
Not seeing the money in the preschool account indicated it had been absorbed by the church, Ms. Davis said. For 40 years, the preschool had had a separate bank account from the church.
Surplus money would typically carry over to the next year, Ms. Davis said. The surplus was higher than usual these years because of federal COVID relief grant money that Epworth Preschool received through the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. She said the grants were $22,500 in 2020, $13,000 in 2021, and nearly $23,000 in 2022.
“It is a CRIME to use federal educational grant money (which the director secured for use in the preschool) for anything but education,” a former church member wrote in the March 24 complaint to the attorney general.
In the summer of 2022, board members needed to see the school’s finances in order to make the budget for the coming school year. Ms. Saunders said she “demanded” the church turn over the records, which board members hadn’t received from the church since that January. A staff member informed Ms. Saunders and Ms. Lyon over the phone that the preschool monies were being absorbed into the church money, Ms. Saunders recalled, noting that it was never communicated in writing.
On Aug. 16, preschool board members received an email stating that Epworth’s leadership team had voted the night before “to dissolve and disband the Epworth Preschool Board, effective immediately.”
Because the board was dismantled, the email stated, Ms. Lyon was elevated to report directly to Mr. Swisher. Epworth memos to the parents state Mr. Swisher did not fire Ms. Lyon, and parents have received inconsistent messages regarding why Ms. Lyon was fired.
Ms. Lyon could not be reached for comment.
The church confirmed it is working toward reopening the preschool for the fall.
Parents confirmed they have received refunds for the remainder of the spring as well as their deposits for the coming fall.
Many former Epworth families are turning to Olivet Lutheran Church’s preschool in Sylvania, which is opening a new class for the fall to fill a need it saw in the community.
“We had people on a waitlist and then when [Epworth] families started calling, we saw the greater need for the whole community to open up another class,” said Olivet Christian Nursery School director Jennifer Crooks. “We're here to support them as new Olivet families.”
Epworth Preschool’s closure has allowed familiar faces to become friends, as parents came together both to seek truth and to plan daytime activities for their kids.
“This has been something in the right direction,” parent Christina Gondol said while one of her two sons and several other kids were in a group tutoring session.
Good has also come out of this, she added, in preventing a similar situation from happening in another community.
“If they would have gotten [Mr. Swisher] removed two years ago, they would have pushed him to another church,” Ms. Gondol said. “It had to come to this to get him all the way out.”
Healing and looking ahead Members who had stepped away from Epworth started to come back on May 7, the first Sunday since Mr. Swisher left, according to the Rev. Stephen Bennett, who will serve as interim pastor through the end of June. He’s been attending and volunteering with the church for four years.
Pastor Bennett said there’s new excitement and positivity.
Epworth will augment its leadership teams with additional members, Pastor Bennett said, and is looking to rebuild some of the “previous committees that had been dissolved.”
He added that transparency is a “major goal” and acknowledged that “it’s been pretty opaque.”
Ms. Saunders said Epworth leadership must disclose information from the past three years in order to regain individuals’ faith in the church.
“The future of Epworth will be determined by what is revealed of the time Epworth was led by [Stephen] Swisher and the actions of those around him who had the power and responsibility to stop his misdeeds,” she wrote in an email. “Anything less will be fateful.”
As communication opens up, Pastor Bennett said, the congregation can begin to heal.
“Healing means coming back together,” Pastor Bennett said. “We’re going to get to work, and I think as people see their church returning to what they experienced previously that brought them there, that healing will begin to take place.”

For the options questions you wanted to ask, but were afraid to.
There are no stupid questions. Fire away. This project succeeds via thoughtful sharing of knowledge.
You, too, are invited to respond to these questions. This is a weekly rotation with past threads linked below.
BEFORE POSTING, PLEASE REVIEW THE BELOW LIST OF FREQUENT ANSWERS. .
..
Don't exercise your (long) options for stock! Exercising throws away extrinsic value that selling retrieves. Simply sell your (long) options, to close the position, to harvest value, for a gain or loss. Your break-even is the cost of your option when you are selling. If exercising (a call), your breakeven is the strike price plus the debit cost to enter the position. Further reading: Monday School: Exercise and Expiration are not what you think they are.
Also, generally, do not take an option to expiration, for similar reasons as above.

2023.05.30 16:06 OnTheEdgeOfFreedom Three long term problems
This isn’t a doomsday piece; in fact it’s sort of in opposition to the idea that we’re facing a sudden collapse. But I do think harder times are coming in the US, and for many they are already hard. I’m going to throw out problems I personally see coming, and propose some preparations. I think these are realistic concerns – you won’t see nuclear war listed here. Note these are all long term concerns – 5-50 years – but preparations should begin as soon as possible. This is mostly centered on the US, but I think some of it is universal. 1. Grid problems. The US power grid has not been well maintained, and it doesn’t help that we now have occasional radical bozos who take pot shots at substations. (There’s also the risk that a foreign adversary might launch a cyberattack that affects the grid, but I consider it unlikely – they’d get a war they don’t want, for their troubles.) I don’t think CMEs are as much of a concern as some people here think – we can see those coming – but they have caused localized disruptions in a few places over the last 50 years (Canada had problems in March of 1989, though they recovered in less than a day.) Most of the risk, in my opinion, is just more extreme weather – hurricanes, extreme heat, wildfires and ice storms can all knock our power for days. A day’s power failure is an inconvenience to most people – houses don’t freeze or cook, food doesn’t go bad, you might have to resort of a battery powered radio for entertainment. Three days, though, means food will start to go bad, and people on wells are resorting to bottled water. Some folk will literally start to go hungry by a week, and gas can be in short supply, so transportation can be hard. By two weeks, problems can get serious. Solar power is often touted as a solution. It’s a good approach, but not a panacea. Buffalo NY had a blizzard recently that immobilized the city for days, and cloud cover was persistent. Solar solutions stopped working. In some areas this is not a concern; in others, solar just isn’t workable. Preps: solar if it works for you and you can afford it. A generator if you can afford it and are willing to store gasoline or propane (10 gallons/20 pounds at least) is a go to in some areas, but it’s not a maintenance free solution. (Run a generator at least once a month for at least a half hour if it’s gasoline powered, every six months if it’s propane.) But there’s a more workable solution that often gets overlooked – be able to live without electricity entirely, when you need to. This means manual can openers, dry ice for cooling food, propane camp stoves, non-perishable food supplies, stored water, oil or propane or kerosene lamps for light, board games, thick blankets and sleeping bags, solar cookers in some areas, a bucket for sponge baths, and batteries for flashlights and radios. And if it’s practical – for folk with kids, especially in school, it isn’t always – spend a day a month without power, to test your preps. Flip the circuit breaker and get to work. The first few times you try it, you learn a lot. Will fusion come and save they day? Maybe, but fusion is at least 10 years out and no one thinks it’s going to be cheap. I would assume the worst when it comes to energy availability (and cost) in your lifetime. 2. The next pandemic These happen and they will happen again. We’ve all learned the drill. Covid took out a million plus Americans, and it took a year to really get effective mitigation going. The mitigation were phenomenal and became available in record time, and they represent a new standard for pandemics, but the human cost in terms of job loss, difficulties in getting supplies, additional expenses for some, national debt, and just plain social isolation still took a toll that no one but epidemiologists were expecting. It could be tomorrow or two hundred years, but it will happen again. It’s a rare generation that won’t see one going forward. The next one could be mild or vastly deadly; there’s no predicting that. We know the drill on this; what’s important now is passing the lessons along to the next generation. Stock masks, have a financial cushion of at least 6 months if you can, do what you can online instead of in person when pandemics hit, practice hygiene religiously. (Hand sanitizer was a minor player in the war against Covid, which turned out to be airborne, but it’s key against many diseases.) Luckily, preps for pandemics are not that different than preps for major weather events – you might get stranded in your house for 2-4 weeks during extreme peaks or lockdowns. 3. Job loss and inflation Without getting into a discussion of late-stage capitalism or general doomerism, none of which I believe in, there’s one unmistakable trend over the last few decades, and it’s that jobs are just harder to find and keep in many disciplines. It’s not just AI that’s raising questions – it’s ongoing social shifts that are moving wealth up the social ladder and making it hard to get a fair share of what’s going around. It’s international bad actors disrupting supply chains, it’s plain old advances in technology disrupting entire industries. People used to joke about using their college degrees to flip burgers – the joke is less funny today because automation is coming for burger flippers, as well as truckers, taxi drivers, farmers, marketers… Having a financial cushion that last 6 months seems like a cruel joke to many, who are having problems stocking a week’s food. But it’s never been more essential, because every social problem ripples into job losses in the end. Social unrest? Weather events? War in another part of the world? Changes in the tax code? It all affects someone’s bottom line, and long gone are the days when businesses would take the hit and protect their workers. Now workers are the first things cut. And that won’t change anytime soon. All I can suggest is, partner with neighbors to share money saving ideas, put every penny you can into whatever savings you can manage, do group buys to cut costs and have supplies on hand, and know about every social support system out there. SNAP was a lifesaver for a lot of people during the pandemic peaks. Food pantries exist in many towns and will save you money. Learn to trim electricity usage to the bone. Fight to keep medical insurance as long as you can, because there’s not many calamities worse than have to choose between skipping critical medical treatments and poverty. -- Folk will note that I didn’t list climate change. Yes, I think it’s very real. But for just about everyone, the problems show up indirectly. The southwest US is drying up, and that won’t change in your lifetime – but you’ll see it in increased water costs (inflation) and grid issues. Food choices will change – sooner or later, meat will become a luxury item and food costs in general will rise further. Diseases may spread more easily and evolve faster as climate migrations of both people and animals create new mixes of pathogens. It’s not that people will drown as oceans rise up overnight, but more areas will become more expensive to live in, as weather damage increases, insurance rates go up, more electricity gets used to compensate for temperature extremes… in the US, climate change is an economic problem... at least at first. Folk will note that I didn’t list rising fascism, which is becoming a measurable trend worldwide, and the US is in no way immune. I don’t have a prep for this: all you can do is vote, or, ultimately, move if you can. These things come in waves and all I can do is hope this one passes before we trigger much worse problems than we already have. As much as social unrest is on everyone’s mind and politics has started driving violence in the US, the prep is to get on with your life, live peaceably with your neighbor regardless of his politics or skin pigmentation, disconnect from disinformation, and vote for people who don’t tell you who you should hate. Troubles don’t come if no one starts them. Folk will note I didn’t add disinformation to the list. I actually think this is a major concern and that most people have no idea how much chaos it causes. Disinformation campaigns over Covid cost (at my own estimate) 300,000 unnecessary deaths in the US. They’re feeding extremism and causing people to turn their back on democratic institutions, like elections. In a very real way, it’s the biggest problem facing the US today, but… the only prep is don’t listen to the bullshit. And I’ve come to the conclusion that there are simply a lot of people who love to listen to bullshit and have no way to determine when they’re being lied to and manipulated. So I don’t have a prep for this. Online I block people to seem to embrace bullshit, but the problem is still out there, and I’ve come to the conclusion that people who are swept up in it, wanted to be swept up in it and there’s no cure for that. Haters gonna hate. All I can suggest is, spend more time in the garden and less online. Vegetables don’t hate anybody.

2023.05.30 14:28 OkAlbatross1942 24M I am my worst enemy and I feel like I can never win
I never had ambitions. Learned to use a phone with an Internet when I was 12 and instantly got hooked into ordinary variety fanfics, then erotica fanfics, then plain erotica and finally porn. Also spent hours just going through useless stuff on the Internet. Never learnt to make friends or socialise. Always used the Internet and my reading habits as distraction from my life. Learnt to distract myself with something when I had to think about my future or make plans. Nobody cared because I was doing good enough in my school studies they thought I was actually worth something lmao. Then the pandemic happened and I spent 3 fucking years failing my courses in the mediocre degree I got into, and now I just spent 2 whole days watching porn. Because I am privileged enough to be in a south Asian median income house hold I have not got kicked out yet.
I spent hours in my mind making up fantasies, day dreaming about lives I can never have, or being jealous of my friends who are doing well. My best buddy for some reason till respects me and has not distanced himself yet. I have no life skills, no job experience, no qualifications beside my a/ls. I joined a club at the campus and somehow got into the board of directors because there was not enough people to elect. I disappointed them too.
My mind is a mess I can't untangle. I tried therapy, arranged by my brother, but it was through zoom and cost a ton, so I couldn't get much benefit before quitting.
The truth is, I know I can change my life if I want to. Yet I can't bring myself to do anything. My motivation, sense of discipline and self-esteem are non existent. I know just complaining g won't change anything. I know . I know. I just want to shut down, go to sleep and never wake up because years of going through the same cycle of -- trying to change stuff doing OK for a day or 2 I get distracted or tired and fail -- has utterly exhausted me. I am tired of trying. I am a burdon on my aging parents, on my brother who actually earls for us and who hasn't even tried to find a life for himself because he has to look after us. I wish I had made better decisions.

This bill is submitted by the Rt. Hon. LightningMinion CBE OM KT PC on behalf of Welsh Labour. Parts of this bill are inspired by the following real-life acts: UK Withdrawal from the European Union (Continuity) (Scotland) Act 2021, Health and Care Act 2022; and mhocholyrood’s Planning (Scotland) Act 2022. Opening Speech: LLywydd,
This bill overhauls the planning process by delegating the planning responsibilities of councils to new local planning boards under the direction of a new national planning agency, the Welsh Planning Agency, modelled off the Scottish Housing Agency I introduced in Scotland through the Planning (Scotland) Act 2022. By creating a new agency for housing and planning, we can ensure that house building is getting the priority it needs to solve Wales’ housing crisis, and to ensure that local “Not In My Backyard” councillors cannot block housing developments for no good reason.
The members of the Welsh Planning Agency will be formed of members nominated by the Welsh government and approved (or rejected) by the Senedd. The local planning boards, of which there will be one for each principal authority, will in turn be formed of members nominated by the local council and approved (or rejected) by the Welsh Planning Agency. This will ensure that local planning boards retain an element of local control and local representation while also ensuring that NIMBY sentiment isn’t represented on local planning boards, helping fix Wales’ shortage of housing.
Debate on this bill shall end on Friday 2nd June 2023 at 10pm BST

2023.05.30 09:42 GFIndiro To the school board.
This message is to all the members of the school board.
You work for the parents and citizens of Fargo. They elected you to the position you are currently occupying. You do not get to hide when someone calls you out. If a parent/citizen wants to call any member out by name, they are entitled to do so. You do not get the right to cut them off midsentence and end their public comment time. You claim to be transparent, but being transparent means if one of the board members screws up, it is up to the board to address it publicly. If you don't, it falls to the individuals who put you in that position and they have every right to criticize you, BY NAME. If you don't like to be criticized publicly, perhaps you should find a job where you aren't under public scrutiny 24/7. And that goes for anyone you hire. If the superintendent does something the parents or taxpayers don't like, they can call him out. If not, they can call out any member of the board. No official in the district's board of education gets a pass from criticism.
Remember this. You work for the people, and the people have a right to question the work you do.

2023.05.30 04:49 OkRecommendation6231 FIU electives review
Soooo i know this is a very hot topic especially for those like me with no VSLO, or others that it didn't work well for them. And since my inbox flooded when i posted this 3 days ago, so here it is :
I did 3 rotations with fiu, starting in october 2022 Hospitalist, IM and ID. Initially i wanted to do cardiology but i changed it last min.
So i obviously concerned about the lack of spanish speaking skills, That the hospital isn't a teaching one etc.
First month i believe was my stroke of my luck, i did hospitalist rotation and where i come from attendings are not the way this preceptor was. He had perfect bedside manner, encoruaged each one of us to take part, and make mistakes. On days he wasn't on call we did some IM board questions which was interesting seeing how each one of us thinks. Of course my case presentation wasn't ideal, but i read that you need to put yourself out there so i did. We rotated with students doing their clerkship years and elective courses. I felt intimidated but i made great friendships with them who all applied in the last cycle and matched! So i got to take history, examine patients, help put at the lab, take part with the preceptor in outpatient with wound cleaning, skin biopsies but was too afraid to try interarticular injections. The rotation was such a high for me. It was great. I was dedicated af, early at 5 am, ask, take part, got told no many times 😂😂 but i knew the worst that can be said is no, which is a sentence one or the fiu affiliated students told me.
Later on i was informed of my next rotation in IM, i was told not to go because its hardly 2 hrs, and the other hospital is long term, I'm not sure its called that. But i decided to switch my rotation and it was to nephrology. I met the nephrologist during the hospitalist rotation, i would mark down patients that had consults and ask nurses when they would be there😂😂 and it was great i rotated with him with two more students we all helped eachother out. So, i made my switch to Jan, that was his availability. In my last day at the hospitalist rotation, i asked the precptor of i could help, i made sure my notes were to his expectations, didn't miss out on details, updated the records carefully and God it paid off, he let me stay and I was able to assisst the new students to the system walk them through it. Also, for spanish we all used Google translate and patients realllyyy appreciate that you try.
It was time to leave and head to ID rotation, so the rotation for me was not what i had been experiencing with hospitalist the preceptor is really nice, but for me there wasn't much i can do. He asked us soo many ID questions that definitely show up on the steps. But i did no case presentations, and no emr :/
January came by and i guess consultants have variable days because the cases were limited, but he included me in a lot of reading from uptodate, to usmle topics that i loathed like hyponatremia 😷 but he explained it thoroughly for me. And would ask me as much of clinical as it the day allowed. Less clinical but more academic part that i learned a lot from.
I had booked my oet exam, and was courageous enough to go back and help out at the hospitalist rotation, it wasn't easy at all, medical assistants helped me, aprns and office manager put in a good word for me with the preceptor and overall i was extremly blessed having them.
So a month ago starting May i talked to the preceptor if he would take in students w/o paying 3000+, its difficult and its a rotation that i as you can tell loved so much. I did so many mistakes, but i kept going and i still believe I was lucky enough to get to this point. So bottom line, i wanted to be transparent and clear about my reviews and offer this chance for someone who can't afford the 3000 for rotation for around half of that.he also offers affordable living and transport that he made available. The office coordinator made this email address specfically to handle and coordinate it, so if you would like go ahead and email her,
[email protected] Its not many spots though maybe 2/3, because he keeps the number low because each student needs to be exposed to being on their own and working their way through a case presentation or at the office. Sometimes it would be 20+ new hospital admission so it was a lot.
ID it was around 11, and others had also around that number we would cross by them when we did our rounds.

2023.05.30 03:25 edwinbarnesc GMERICA: Activists, Affiliates & The Return of Icahn - A Succession Plan To Launch TEDDY IPO (part 2 - 40k character limit)
| This is a continuation of part 1 post from here -- I hit a 40,000 character limit and all the images got messed up. GMERICA, The Harbinger of Shorts So Edwin, you keep mentioning these Affiliates, and I've been here for 84 years so where are they? Here are some of them, including u/RealPulte (sorry can't remember who sent this, tag me for credit): From $BBYQ court doc 179 - Interested Parties that want to acquire BBBY These Affiliates and Interested Parties may seem like Pultergeists lurking in the subs, but they are Among Us: - Ryan Cohen - a certified lurker that enjoys dank memes
- Pulte - frequent lurker of the subs and beyond_uranus
- Silver Point Capital - relation to Gary Hu (a portfolio manager under Brett Icahn)
- Angelo Gordon - relation to Andrew Teno (another PM under Brett)
- Putman Investments - owns Toys R' Us and Babies R' Us in Canada and now expanding inside Macy's and former Bed, Bath, and Beyond stores across the USA
- All of these parties or Affiliates have direct relations with the Activist Investors in some way
It's kind of funny that GMERICA started as a tweet from Ryan Cohen and has now transformed into something delightful, beyond the retail and household investor. And it's all coming together, for the final cut scene. 69D Checkmate: Acquiring BABY With LBO Financing I should start off by clarifying what I have discovered in that BBBY, the parent company, may not be the target for acquisition anymore. The reason for that is because the covenant restrictions, liens, and debts have been removed through chapter 11 restructuring (thank you shorties) and no longer prevent BBBY from selling its prized crown jewel and subsidiary asset: buybuyBABY. Therefore, the most logical step is to just buyout BABY directly in a carve-out and that is exactly what has already taken place which I will prove here. So how was this LBO deal financed and handled? I have discovered 2 major rounds of funding sent to BBBY for carve-out of BABY, but first: - Recall the Billion Dollar Pooled Funds that are under direction and control of Brett Icahn
- Recall the Buying Ratio for co-investing of a $39 to 1 ratio where the "employee" Isthmus LLC under control of Brett via Icahn Capital, and that whenever the employee makes an investment up to $7.5M per transaction then the "employer" $IEP will match up to $292.5M for combined $300M maximum per transaction
Round 1 Financing - Creating the DIP Agent Lender and DIP Facility for ch11 The first round of funding delivered to BBBY came from $IEP indirectly through a Shelf-Registration filed with SEC on July 26, 2022 by pledging up to $400M in $IEP Depository Units (put up as collateral for loans). I mention indirectly, because those funds were routed to Sixth Street Partners then given to BBBY. On August 24, 2022, BBBY received up to $400M in emergency funds needed to stave off bankruptcy, according to Barron's: Bed Bath & Beyond Finalizing $400 Million Loan With Sixth Street Partners Aug. 25, 2022 9:33 am ET Bed Bath & Beyond is in exclusive talks with asset manager Sixth Street Partners for a loan of about $400 million. While MSM is known for spreading FUD, they were at least able to confirm this in half-truths but I will correct it: Sixth Street provided this emergency loan of $400M to BBBY, but with good intention because BBBY knew they were being cellar boxed to bankruptcy. Sixth Street has been identified as the DIP Agent Lender in $BBBYQ ch11 court docs and is legal counseled by Proskauer Rose via IEP, as I mentioned in part 1 post. The first round of funding enabled the Activist Investors to save Bed, Bath, and Beyond, while simultaneously become the stalking horse, and gaining Super Seniority to acquire Assets in the ch11 court sales by providing the DIP Facility ( another signature move by Icahn). None of this would have been possible without the shorting hedge funds and abusive naked shorting that essentially led to the creation of the ultimate bear trap and has now revealed they are swimming naked with 348 million shares oversold to retail investors, Check ✅ Round 2 Financing This will be broken down based on IEP filings into two parts to see the movement of the Funds. Part 1, beginning in the first quarter of 2021 and reported on IEP 10Q filing on page 13, here summarized: As of March 31, 2022 and December 31, 2021 Brett had investments in the Investment Funds with a total fair market value of $86 million and $93 million, respectively. IEP also entered into a guaranty agreement with an affiliate of Brett Icahn, pursuant to which IEP guaranteed the payment of certain amounts required to be distributed by the Investment Funds to such affiliate pursuant to the terms and conditions of the Manager Agreement (terms of the Buying Ratio). I mention this part to understand how much Funds were available to Brett, which is $86M based on fair market value (these were pledged depository units for loans) as of March 31, 2022. Now for Part 2, beginning in the first quarter of 2022 and reported on IEP 10Q filing on page 13, here summarized: As of March 31, 2023 and December 31, 2022 Brett Icahn had investments in the Investment Funds with a total fair market value of $49 million and $50 million, respectively. IEP also entered into a guaranty agreement with an affiliate of Brett Icahn, pursuant to which we guaranteed the payment of certain amounts required to be distributed by the Investment Funds to such affiliate pursuant to the terms and conditions of the Manager Agreement (terms of the Buying Ratio). By March 31, 2023, it appears Brett invested some of the Funds and after doing some basic math: $86M minus $49M comes out to $37M utilized. Following the terms of the Buying Ratio for $39:1 to enable co-investing, Brett would have had to make several transactions between 12/31/21 to 3/31/23, but each transaction would have been capped at $7.5M each, however, when aggregated it comes out to $37M for that period. So $37M x $39 = $1,443,000,000 or $1.443 Billion combined investment from $IEP, as directed by Brett. Where did that money go? It was given to B. Riley Securities (representing the mystery buyer IEP) to handle the transaction, since Hudson Bay Capital was removed after the Form S-1 was pulled (see post 1, section titled, "Preferred Stock via Form S-3 That Is Active"). Oh and this will help too, a screenshot from Pitchbook data that tracks Mergers & Acquisitions: Brett Icahn invested $1.443B and Pitchbook reveals buybuyBABY was acquired for 1.44B (the euro conversion on Jan 13, 2023 was 1 EUR = $1.08 USD) Remember when RC tweeted that he bought all the stocks on January 18, 2022? Looks about right: buybuyBABY has been carved-out with LBO financing in a cash & share acquisition offer. The buyer is B. Riley Securities providing $1.443B cash and Lazard providing a [unit] share swap received from RC Ventures via Indemnification Letter then entered into structured deal that binds IEP, RC Ventures, Activist Affiliates, and Interested Parties in the Dealer Manager Agreement. Here's a break-down to see how the buyer(s) were structured in the deal: - Debtoseller: BBBY company to sell buybuyBABY asset in ch11
- Buyer: B. Riley Securities (BRS) acting on behalf of the mystery buyer(s)
- BRS combines IEP (cash) and Lazard (shares) for the offer
- Lazard represents all the buyers under the Dealer Manager Agreement (DMA)
- The DMA represents a consortium of buyers: Activist Affiliates including Pulte, RC Ventures, Interested Parties, and IEP
BABY is ready to IPO into TEDDY as soon as the stalking horse bidder is announced and the terms of the asset sale are finalized through ch11 formal proceedings. Checkmate ✅👑 TLDR, Summary of Entire Post: - Carl Icahn created a Succession Plan on October 1, 2020 as a challenge for the young Brett Icahn to ascend the throne, where he will not be paid until he completes a task within 7 years or less
- Carl has pledged a vast amount of his wealth from $IEP, the Depository Unit shares as collateral to raise a Multi-Billion Pooled Investment Fund that co-invests as the "employer"
- Brett Icahn has been promoted to direct investments as a General Partner of $IEP and through his role as "employee" of Isthmus LLC
- Every time Brett the employee invests up to $7.5M then the employer $IEP matches up to $292.5M for a Buying Ratio of $39:1 and between 12/31/21 to 3/31/23, Brett invested $37M or $1.443 Billion aggregate combined
- $IEP is under attack because Carl owns 84% of total shares outstanding and shorts are naked shorting IEP out of desperation in hopes they can Margin Call and trigger liquidation to remove Carl as General Partner of IEP.
- The short attack by Hindenburg Research is actually masking a swap that has been setup to anchor $BBBYQ with $IEP so the two stock tickers run inverse to each other and has currently collapsed $IEP to -70% for 5-year all-time lows.
- Brett Icahn must prove he can generate a return and show he is capable of taking over Carl's IEP Empire. Within 1 month of the succession plan, RC Ventures and its Activist Affiliates writes a letter to the board of GameStop on November 16, 2020 and the Saga begins.
- GameStop is saved from cellar boxing with an At-The-Market offering on June 2021 where a second sneeze generated a $1 Billion war chest and was deployed to finance the development of GameStop NFT marketplace and creation of a Web 3 Metaverse world.
- Following the discovery of meme stock basket and swaps, the Activist Investors & Affiliates move onto $BBBY with RC Ventures sending a letter to the board on March 6, 2022.
- On August 18, 2022, RCV sells or transfers his shares of $BBBY to an investment bank named Lazard Ferres, a friendly to IEP which has been utilized in the takeover of HP & Xerox.
- On October 18, 2022, Lazard enters into a Dealer Manager Agreement, which binds all groups together: IEP, Activist Affiliates, and Interested Parties into a single, sole buyer.
- The Activist Affiliates have been identified as Pulte and RC Ventures, with Interested Parties as Putman Investments (owner of Toys R' Us in Canada), Silver Point Capital (ties to Gary Hu), and Angelo Gordon (ties to Andrew Teno) as named in $BBBYQ ch11 docs.
- The LBO deal to finance the carve-out of buybuyBABY is complete where the debtor (parent company BBBY) entered into a deal with B. Riley Securities for a cash and share offer.
- B. Riley Securities (acting as buyer for IEP) is the only authorized remaining party to handle the transaction with BBBY based on an active Form S-3.
- Lazard (acting on behalf of IEP) created the Dealer Manager's Agreement: a consortium of buyers including IEP, Activist Affiliates, and Interested Parties.
- The First Round of financing began with $IEP sending $400M Depository Units to Sixth Street which would setup the DIP Facility and give IEP Super Seniority status to claim the sale of assets (BABY) in ch11. With the Second Round of financing via Dealer Manager Agreement that started in October 18, 2022 which brought Lazard (holding RC Ventures shares of BBBY) to B. Riley Securities (holding the $1.443B cash received from $IEP that pledged Depository Units as collateral).
- The Carve-Out deal completed sometime mid-January 2023 or perhaps when RC tweeted that he bought all the stocks. A Pitchbook data screenshot reveals that BABY was acquired On Jan 13, 2023 and ch11 court docs reveal that Lazard mentions a specific sale of BABY if the debtors (BBBY) will consummate a sale then Lazard will be paid a percentage fee for the deal.
- GMERICA is the Four Horsemen of Shorties MOASSAPOCALYPSE = IEP, GME, BBBY, and soon TEDDY.
- GMERICANs will become Unithodlers of the new company TEDDY, post-SPAC IPO when all things are said and done.
- buybuyBABY has already been acquired and are following formal procedures as laid out in the timeline by BBBY court docs, with the next hearing on May 31, 2023.
- An official announcement of the carve-out sale of buybuyBABY will soon come.
- Icahn will have its due and shorts will never forget the Blood, Bath & Beyond to Uranus
MOASS HAS ALREADY BEGUN. GMERICA 🏴☠️ Edit 1: die hard bobbys will appreciate this other loose end getting covered - how did RC Ventures nominate Carol Flaton in January 2023 when RCV supposedly sold everything? Based on a question from comment: where does it say RC sold his share to a private party? My response: Speculative deduction reveals that he (RCV) sold to another party. There were 3 good discussions that covered it from different angles, one of them was from Region, another from Life and of course the one I saved from travis_b13: https://www.reddit.com/ThePPShow/comments/13mbjv7/the_juice_is_in_the_fruit_bbby_engaged_lazard/ Oh and it would make sense that the Affiliates under Brett's direction were holding onto the shares from RC Ventures because there was that scuffle where Carol Flaton was nominated as Director in Jan 2023 which nobody could explain because supposedly RC Ventures sold out so how could he elect a board? Perhaps the most obvious answer was that the Affiliates were holding the shares under the Dealer Manager Agreement which binded all Affiliates and were through Lazard. So the affiliates appointed Carol Flaton. Here this post by u/Life_Relationship_77 discusses it: https://www.reddit.com/BBBY/comments/117uurj/rc_ventures_was_holding_at_least_3900000_shares/ submitted by edwinbarnesc to edwinbarnesc [link] [comments] |

2023.05.30 02:08 ReallyIsNotThatGuy The Debt Limit Deal is a Big Win for Biden and Democrats.
Whats in the Debt limit deal? - Suspend Debt Limit until January 2025
- Cap government spending increases at 1%
- With inflation increasing at a rate higher than 1%, this in action acts as a major cut to projected spending
- IRS funding cut
- Around $20 billion of the $80 billion total passed by Democrats in the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022.
- Cuts for some government benefits
- Rise age for SNAP (food stamp) work requirements from 50 to 54.
- Exempts veterans, homeless and foster care children from work requirements
- Project permitting reform to shorten oversight reviews to a maximum of 1 to 2 years
- COVID funding claw back
- $30 billion in unspent covid money to be reappropriated
- End the Student Loan moratorium by August.
Variety of other fiscal changes including an increase in military spending, enaction of pipelines, and other policies.
This represents not only a massive bipartisan political win for President Biden and Speaker McCarthy, an offer for breathing room for the United States from a potential debt default, but a massive win from what was possible for Democrats.
Many may not remember, but a similar debt ceiling crisis occurred in
2011 under President Obama. Republicans, having taken a strong majority in the
2010 midterm elections, threatened default unless Obama committed to steep cuts to federal spending. This newfound power by the GOP led to an
"epic" years long power struggle between Congress and the President. The resulting deal Obama reached, while prevented default, resulted in around
8% direct cuts to discretionary spending.
While the 2010 GOP did not have nearly the majority they do in 2022 (49 in 2010, 4 in 2022), the possibility of deep, lasting cuts were a very real possibility this time around. With a 1% cap on spending, this will represent a 1%-4% cut to spending, depending on inflation.
This deal, as mentioned before, represents a massive political win for both the President as well as specifically the Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, but the GOP as a whole.
From Day 1, President Biden has donned the role of "
Great Unifier" who sought to create real, bipartisan change where past presidents, both
Republican and
Democratic, failed. With historic bipartisan bills investing in
infrastructure,
American supply chains and technology investment, and
gun safety laws, Biden put his nose to grindstone in a way that hasn't been seen in nearly 20 years. It proves, at least for now, that the President and Congress can still make deals and get laws passed.
For Speaker McCarthy, this deal shows the strength of the Republican caucus, even with a weak majority. If the deal is able to ultimately succeed in the House, it proves that McCarthy is not pigeon-hold by his far-right, fiscally rabid flank of the party that may
strike mutiny over the bill . While ascending to the speakership on a
rocky path, many thought McCarthy had made to many concessions to his ultra-conservative wing, making it difficult to make deal with Democrats. Successful passage would assuage previously believed notions of McCarthy simply being a puppet for the right flank.
In rare fashion for the U.S. political system, this deal represents a win-win-win for all involved, while also being a hard pill to swallow for all involved.

2023.05.30 00:01 Nice_Breakfast1872 Law and Indigenous identity fraud
I'm an Indigenous law student (had to make a throwaway because just that info with my post history could be enough to doxx me). I know I am Indigenous, my whole family is on reserve, 3/4 of my grandparents went to residential school, its not some distant heritage thing. The further I go in academia I'm seriously, seriously disturbed by how many 'pretendians' are around me, not only taking the spaces and awards for Indigenous people but becoming elevated and touted as leading voices and executives of Indigenous agencies and organizations.
Some of the hardest hitting was one of my undergrad professors who I did research for was later found out to be a pretendian. Now in law school, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond was exposed to be a pretendian when I was at the Indigenous Bar Association conference. My own school's Indigenous students society has a fair few questionable members. I will probably always have a bit of a sour taste in my mouth seeing someone who is 1/16th and has no lived experience as an Indigenous person get accolades and opportunities over me, but I'm really just trying to discuss the more blatant fraud.
The Amira and Nadya Gill story that broke REALLY pissed me off,
this article summarizes most of it but I'll also TLDR:
- Amira and Nadya Gill claim to be Inuit and members of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI)
- they did different news features on Kanata Trade Co. their "Indigenous business to watch"
- Nadya was a law student at Queens and went to the Native Summer Law Program, which is basically a month of summer school at USask before 1L that Indigenous law students across Canada can connect, as well as studying property for credit and have a lighter 1L load
- Amira was in engineering and Nadya got with her JD and LLM in 2022 with tons of awards for Indigenous students and Indigenous businesses along the way
- Some actually Inuit folks raised some questions online and NTI did an investigation of their enrolment
- They say their mother Karima Manji had adopted them from an Inuk woman
- NTI found they had applied citing an actual Inuk woman being their biological mother, except this was a disabled Inuk women they had taken advantage of and used to lie
- This Inuk woman Kitty Noah has 7 real children who had never heard of these Gill girls before and now are trying to get the RCMP to investigate them for fraud but to my knowledge have gotten no word back
- its alleged Karima Manji, the twins mom, dated Kitty Noah's late husband decades ago and is how she knew the family and knew of Kitty Noah's traumatic brain injuries and care plan
- Karima Manji was also charged with defrauding March of Dimes, a charity that works with people with disabilities for $800,000 back in 2015, just a nice little side story
- NTI removed them from their registration list obviously and they are pretty definitively not Indigenous and just liars
Nadya was placed on leave from Durant Barristers where she was articling and is now 'under investigation' by the LSO but seriously how can someone like this just go on and practice after, you know, doing fraud? and taking advantage of a disabled Indigenous woman? taking thousands of dollars of scholarship money from Indigenous students?
and I know they've got buddies too! Karlie Nordstrom is a friend of Nadya's, got her law degree at UofT, claims to be Metis, but was sending letters threatening the Inuit women who uncovered this (now corroborated, dare I say proven) story of fraud with defamation! But don't worry, she's
on the board of directors for Aboriginal Legal Services Toronto AND got a job on Bay st filling Aird & Berlis' Indigenous quota I'm sure 🙃
Idk writing this makes me want to cry. The Gill twins is a more blatant nefarious cases of Indigenous identity fraud but because most schools and jobs only rely on self-identification, there's loads more with very vague and distant claims who skirt by with no further questions asked and collect every award, opportunity and cheque earmarked for Indigenous people and idk what can even be done.
As an Indigenous student, or when I'm a junior lawyer, I don't want to be the one going guns blazing and be identity policing especially when there are so many cases of family trauma, 60s scoop and everything else making it a sensitive subject to so many. Thats why I rely on the institutions to do their due diligence in ensuring that those they prop up as their Indigenous students or Indigenous lawyers actually are Indigenous. They should have the grounds to verify Indigenous identity claims if Indigenous identity is a prerequisite.
I guess I really have a couple questions for the sub; there's a difference between those with weak/suspicious claims and fully fraudulent like it was for the Gill twins. Like how could they have been found out sooner when they got past a lot of check points by being registered Inuit NTI members? Pessimistically, I think had they said they just had an Inuit great great great grandparent, they'd be given a lot of the same opportunities and awards and never be found out. Also more specifically in the legal field, what can be done about law students and lawyers who do this? Is it just an integrity question? Will law societies actually disbar?

2023.05.29 21:53 whatsophiered "Green" Portland is only green in Ted's neighborhood...
Hey all, I'm part of
Parkrose-Argay Neighborhood Coalition's effort to stop a diesel freight warehouse from going in on the old Kmart lot at 122nd and Sandy. For more information about how this development is harmful to children and Portland at large, please see these articles from
The Oregonian,
Willamette Week,
KGW, and
OPB. In short, I think it is unethical and just plain bad planing to put in a massive freight warehouse across the street from a school and next door to low-income apartments.
My ask: can you please take 5 minutes of your time to fill out our community survey, and share it with your NE Portland neighbors? The Coalition is working with the EPA to pursue civil rights. Having data from the community will help us fight this development both locally and federally.
