2023.05.28 15:13 LTC_user Not sure if this is correct sub but any insight is appreciated.
A family member has had a car insurance claim void and has had to foot the bill of over £70k.
They wanted 2k a month to settle this in 3 years but they cannot afford this, instead they are going to offer 100 a month.
They are not paying rent and been living with us as a favour for quite a while now but need to get their own place.
Their plan is to show the insurance company they can only afford 100 as they will need the rest of their spare money in the future for rent and bills.
Any ideas if this is feasible, as if they take all their disposable income they will be trapped with us unless we kick them out?
Also worried as the address where the debt has been sent is our home and do not want bad credit, or debt collection ppl coming here or anything else affecting our credit or us.
We are located in England
Any insight or advice is welcome.

2023.05.28 15:10 Master_Intention518 Does my ex gf’s dad have a leg to stand on with regard to ‘alleged’ unpaid rent?
I lived with my (now ex) gf (Jen) in her dads (Steve) house for about a year, he worked away so we barely saw him, but were paying £600 p/m in rent and covering the bills ourselves, despite never having a tenancy agreement or anything in writing, definitely nothing signed by me.
I chose to move out to follow a better career prospect however owed £600 in unpaid rent at the point of leaving, I did tell Steve that I had every intention to pay it, just needed to get settled into the new job first.
There has been drama, Jen and I broke up for good and now I don’t particularly feel like paying the debt. I am well aware that it’s immoral and I can live with that, I just want to know if I can get away with it…
fake names for obvious reasons
Edit: The above all took place in England

2023.05.28 15:10 antiich What did I avoid today?
My partner and I crossed overland into Cambodia today.
We arranged a private transfer to Phnom Penh, and pretty much straight away the driver picked up his “brother” to come with us.
He then drove for about 10 minutes before turning onto a dirt road to “go to his family’s home”. I told him we wanted to get out of the car and he wouldn’t stop.
We get to his house, he goes inside and comes out with a baby. Tells us the baby’s sick and needs to go to the hospital on the way. I tell him we’ll go with another driver instead then, and he takes the baby back inside and comes back out without it, continuing to drive us.
This was already too many red flags for my partner and me, so as soon as we pulled into the closest town about 5 minutes later I told the driver we’d changed our minds and wanted to stay the night there.
Now I am familiar with the “sick baby” routine and expect we would have been asked to pay for medical bills. But what else might we have avoided today?
We were about to drive for 5 hours on incredibly remote roads. I am wondering whether, once he realised the sick baby game wasn’t going anywhere with us, if perhaps we were at risk of express kidnapping or some other scam?
Interested to hear people’s theories and/or similar experiences.

All 6 sims in my household have had tons of bills stuck in their inventory for a long time now. One of them has 63 bills in her inventory. No amount of paying them off will change it, they’re all stuck in there. They can’t be dragged out, they’re not moveable. Does anyone know how to remove them?

2023.05.28 15:02 BigGingerJake Local Council conducting redundant Fire Safety works for the entire Borough?!
- My local Council appears to be undertaking unnecessary fire safety works which duplicate works already undertaken by them less than 5 years ago - replacing FD30S door sets with FD30S door sets (yes you read that correctly)
- They do not appear to have conducted a fire risk assessment
- They are not responding to any requests (verbal or written) for supporting documentation such as the risk assessment or a breakdown of the costs
- They have ignored all communication on the topic for months (including during the consultation period) until last week, the same week they started doing the works
I appreciate this is long, so if you want to help, please skip to the section headed as "Questions
I am a leaseholder in a Council flat in my borough. The block is 3-stories, and for the sake of regulations, I believe the height is approximately 9m.
In 2013 we had a Fire Risk Assessment undertaken, and as a result, almost five years ago our Council completed works to our block "reasonably undertaken in accordance with fire safety regulations" and "which include the installation of flat entrance door sets (FD30) to meet regulations".
Some more detail about the works undertaken as per what we have in writing from the Council:
"The replacement door and frame (door set) will be a compliant 30 FD 4 panelled door along with the associated ironmongery which includes door viewers, security chains, letter plate and numerals."
Following the works, all of the flat entrance doors at this address are fitted with smoke strips around the doors, and intumescent strips. My understanding is that these are classified as FD30S doors.
Each leaseholder was invoiced ~£880 for these works, and the bill for the half of the tenants who were placed here in vulnerable housing was presumably footed by the constituent taxpayers. We were invoiced in 2020.
Fast-forward to today.
The Council are pushing forward with works in our block again; this time they are replacing our FD30S door sets with FD30S door sets, and the bill per flat is circa £4,200 - a 480% increase compared to the last time (£880).
The reasoning behind these works on the paperwork they sent us simply says "Fire Risk Assessments have highlighted the need for works". The most recent Fire Risk Assessment provided to tenants is from 2013 and is the one which led to our doors sets being upgraded to FD30 five years ago.
During the 30-day consultation period, several of the tenants attended the meetings the Council held. We asked them all the questions you would expect:
- why are you replacing the door sets like-for-like?
- what is wrong with our existing doors?
- did you make a mistake when you installed the FD30 doors last time?
- what regulation has changed which requires this?
- when was the Fire Safety Assessment was done?
- can we have a copy of the Fire Safety Assessment?
- can we have an itemized breakdown of the costs?
During the meeting, every response they gave was "we will get back to you with that information". None of us received any of that information before the consultation period was over.
We have since put in writing in a large email chain which includes most of the leaseholder tenants and every stakeholder we could find at the Council, and the contacts from the contractor they are using. In this email chain we asked all of these questions again. Both the Council and Quinn London have simply ignored all of our requests for information. This was more than 2 months ago. I have followed up with phone calls too.
Finally a Response
Last week they started undertaking the door replacements. As far as I am aware, only a small number of the tenants who were placed here in vulnerable housing have had the work done so far (they don't care as they don't pay the invoice). Last week also happens to be the first time they have replied to us. After incessantly harassing the contractor and the Council, I finally got something in writing over email from the project manager at the contractor. It says the following:
"The current doors to a number of flats within [redacted] are not fully certified FD30s door sets, and while I can see some of the components we would expect to see in an FD30S doorset, they have not been installed together and tested as a complete set to achieve at least 30 minutes fire resistance from both sides. For this reason it has been recommended that these doors are replaced with complete certified composite FD30s doorsets, as per current legislation."
- Given we have in writing from the Council that our door sets are FD30 certified, is this a valid reason to completely replace our FD30S door sets like-for-like and spend ~£92,000?
- Wouldn't a Fire Door Inspection confirm whether these door sets are adequate? A quick search came up with the [NAFDI](http://www.nafdi.org.uk/) and the first place I found costs £15-£20 per single door.
- What are the legal implications of the Council and contractor ignoring all of our written communications and requests for information until the same week they started the works? Is there something that can help us?
- What regulation has changed within the last five years which requires flats to replace FD30S door sets like-for-like if they are installed as individual parts?
- Is there anything I can do, legally speaking, for force them to stop immediately while we resolve this?
- Who can I report all of this to outside of my local MP? Which are the appropriate bodies to contact?
I believe these works are completely unnecessary, and are a result of fraud or gross professional negligence. My aim is to stop them going ahead, and I am looking for advice on how to achieve that.
To top it off, there are thousands of flats across my Borough having works like this done. If I am correct, and most of these works are unnecessary, I suspect the Council is probably wasting millions from the private coffers of its constituents as well as taxpayer money.
Even if the project manager's explanation for replacing our door sets is valid, I have this in writing from the Council in relation to the previous works undertaken:
"I can confirm [...] flats [redacted] and [redacted] required a total new door set (door and frame)."
Most of the flats had the door leaf (the actual door) replaced, and the door frame upgraded to reach FD30 standards, but as per this quote two of the flats did indeed have the entire door set done at the same time. In relation to the door sets the Project Manager's reasoning for undertaking the works was that "they have not been installed together". The works they are undertaking now also include replacing these two doors sets.
Fire Safety Regulations 2022
The Council and contractor to date have refused to provide us (by ignoring us) a copy of the Fire Risk Assessment which is driving the need to conduct these works. [The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022: fire door guidance](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/fire-safety-england-regulations-2022-fire-door-guidance/fire-safety-england-regulations-2022-fire-door-guidance
) which came into force on 23 January 2023 state the following:
6.5. To check flat entrance doors, you will need access to each flat, so that the door can be checked on both sides. Arrangements should be made with residents in advance to carry out these checks. You could consider offering a range of times, so that residents can be present. Other than in very small blocks of flats, it is unlikely that all doors can be checked on a single occasion.
We are not aware of any Fire Risk Assessments taking place, and we definitely have not had the insides of our flat entrance doors checked, nor any appointments arranged to do so. 6.1 of this regulation specified that it refers to buildings where the top story is above 11m (ours is ~9m) but I'm not sure if that applies to clause 6.5. Could their Fire Risk Assessment be out-of-date / inapplicable?
Building Safety Act 2022
Unfortunately I believe my block is excluded from this (our block is 3 stories, and approx. 9m tall) but I wondered if there was anything similar that would apply?
Building Safety Act 2022 come into force today (28 June 2022).
Those responsible for historical safety defects, and those who own buildings, will instead be required to fund essential repairs.

2023.05.28 15:02 FlynngoesIN To those who want to fight.
I see posters every day about people wanting to quit, strike, unionize etc. What I propose is that we create a fund, of anyone who wishes to contribute 1$ a month subscription style. It's a tiny amount of money, that across thousands to millions of people could be a massive amount of cash flow. Using this cash flow would enable us to fund long term strikes by paying bills and food allowing us to REALLY hurt them. We could make social media propaganda campaigns to solicit change and support from customer base (those young ones will support ANY cause fr) and we could use it to straight up lobby politicians. They designed the system to where we must be dependant on something so that the possibility of us fighting the corporations won't ever happen again, like it did with our ancestors who got children labor resolves, minimum wages made, and other predatory laws reveals and protections guaranteed. We could have national changes made drastically, because if this idea actually comes to life they will fold in fear of what could do to them. It seems everyone wants to, but no one knows how and no one is willing to guide or lead. AmericanWorkerUnion. It's time to make class warfare a fair fight. FOLLOW ME

2023.05.28 15:00 bcps10 Government issued Luxembourg products/investments
Hi Everyone, hope you are all well and enjoying the recent decent Luxembourg weather.
In my home country the government has issued treasury bills that are currently yielding almost 3%. As I am no longer a resident, I am unable to invest in those products.
As I have some liquidity and already have some exposure to stocks, I was looking for something risk free.
Does the Luxembourguish government offer anything like that? Any product that is risk free paying 3%ish per year?

2023.05.28 14:51 baba_yaga_speaks Her transition is taking priority over our family.
My (32cisf) wife (35 mtf) and I have been married for 7 years, together for 9 and have two kids (2 yo and 8 months). She came out as trans when our youngest was about 6 weeks old. To say I was surprised is an understatement. I was completely blindsided. I was struggling with extreme postpartum depression and anxiety and basically handling childcare alone, so this announcement broke me. I never made it her problem though and have been nothing but supportive even in my darkest days, taking her shopping, helping her with hair and makeup, really taking her under my wing.
However, I have been consistently handling the childcare by myself. We both work full time and when we decided to have kids I expected an equal partner. She was not a great parent even before the transition, but it’s gotten even worse. She found an online community through an app and has completely thrown herself into in. She’s on her phone 80-90% of the day. I’m struggling to pay for daycare, diapers, bills, etc. but she’ll drop hundreds on new clothes, skincare, and shoes. She constantly complains about not being able to fully enjoy her transition like she could have before kids. She doesn’t want to hold the kids because they might get something on her new girl clothes. She has said and acted like she regrets making a family because she “missed out” on so much by transitioning late in life.
Meanwhile, I’m drowning in responsibilities, taking care of the kids, and trying to stay supportive but I’m really starting to resent her. I feel like this would be easier alone.
Not sure what I’m looking for here. Maybe just to vent. Has anyone else experienced this?

2023.05.28 14:48 lostTransitions Been hospitalized gave my insurance but hospital wants me to pay anyways
I have been hospitalized in germany due to an accident, the doctors asked me about my insurance which i provided the day of the accident (it is an international insurance) after leaving the hospital i got a bill for close to 6000 euros that i should be paying soon and an attached email print for the conversation between the head of the financial department of the hospital and my insurance.
Long story short, my insurance refused to cover me since they've been notified with the accident a week later. And now the hospital wants me to pay the whole bill to cover for their mistake of not notifying on time and i am saying that it is their mistake since i have provided my insurance information since day one but they took their time to inform ( i couldn't inform my insurance because i lost my phone due to the accident ) and also i cannot pay for the medical bill since i am making less than minimum wage anyways.
It would be great if you guys can provide me with some help and guidance on how to handle this situation.
Thanks in advance.

2023.05.28 14:28 Important_Sense106 I need help
Needing to vent. The past 3-4 years of my life have honestly been hell. I don't think I can keep going for much longer. My soon to be ex wife abandoned me and took our daughter and dog and moved out of state... I won't say which state due to privacy, but a far enough state that I need to fly there to visit my kid. And when I am there, all I feel like is a visitor... I don't feel like her father, I feel like someone who just visits her. My ex talks sh*t the entire time that I am there which is not easy. She'll say that our breakup is my fault and she'll talk about dating other men right in front of me. And before she left me, she was very abusive and manipulative towards me. She was even physically abusive a few times.I miss my daughter and my puppy so much. I BEG my ex to bring our daughter to visit but she refuses.
Work also blows. I'm working a job I used to love but I now despise . My anxiety gets so bad at work that it drives my IBS to level 1000 and I'm literally having to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes! I know other co workers are noticing and talking behind my back. I've tried applying to other places with zero luck. I can't not work, I NEED the money.
I can't afford a lawyer. STBXW drained our joint account. IDEK how I'm gonna make my truck payment that's due in two days. I'm rated, but not by much to make a difference in my financial situation. I also pay her car note, car insurance, cell phone, and health insurance on TOP of my mortgage and other bills I have at home. I also owed this year on federal taxes.
Can't afford therapy. I was regularly seeing a family therapist but it was costing $400 per session AFTER insurance! Who can afford that??? I tried going to mental health at VA hospital Aurora, Colorado but I was turned away, told to come back on Monday! Aurora is 1.5 hour drive from where I live. I also tried reaching out to my company's EAP (employee assistance program) but nobody from HR is answering my emails or phone calls. Only thing I've been able to do is visit my doctor and try different meds and none of them work so far and give me terrible side effects.
My mental health is so bad that it's impacting my physical health. I now have chest pains and I need an echocardiogram to see whats going on with my heart. Another medical bill that I can't afford.
I'm just so unhappy... I just want peace and happiness in my life. I've been through some very dark times in my life but this period is the darkest.

2023.05.28 14:24 mekkimegz In advance of Father's Day, how should the bill be split if one sibling is also a dad?
We're going to an expensive restaurant with my (31) parents, my brother (30) and his wife, and our older brother (35) with his wife and 2 young kids.
We used to split the bill between the 3 siblings but since one of the siblings is now also a dad, how do we split the bill? It seems weird for us to pay for the eldest's whole family of four and also weird for one sibling to not contribute to our dad's gift.

2023.05.28 14:23 EllethOfGondolin I’m so tired of having to borrow money, I need help please
To preface this, I am based in Australia.
So to get straight to the point, I’m working a job that is seasonal. In the lead up to and through winter all the work dies off. Essentially they can only keep on their full time employed staff which is the Boss, the Bosses son (he and I have been handling accounting/bookkeeping together and there’s not enough work to go around)
I have been fighting to get onto government benefits for the last 8 weeks, my previous employer is dodgy AF and my Employment Services provider have been fighting for the last four weeks, just to get a damn signature on some pre-filled paperwork!
My hours have gone down the drain and I keep having to borrow money while looking for suitable work due to disability. I always feel so guilty asking anyone because I’m extremely independent and stubborn and can’t face the fact that I can’t even pay my own damn bills without help.
I’m literally sitting here crying.
I just need some advice right now, can someone help?

2023.05.28 14:18 SignificantWorry910 Think Hospital is Lieing to me about Billing Law- New Jersey
In New Jersey I was in an auto accident. In NJ you CAN elect health insurance to be primary over PIP.
Hospital is refusing to acknowledge this and is treating Auto as primary with this quote
“Per New Jersey law, we must bill your auto insurance before billing your medical insurance, even if you chose your medical insurance as primary for auto accidents.”
I can find no such law. My health paid them as primary and the auto paid as secondary. In their accounting system they are treating it in reverse because its allowing them to keep more cash ( my health has excellent rates with them).
No matter who is primary I will pay next to nothing, but I feel like their being shady in how their doing this. What can i do? Or should I just not do much and just pay my balance?

2023.05.28 14:17 mimi897 Is this adult life forever?
I'm 33. I never knew what to do with myself, never had a passion for something and I ended up in a field that I don't love but sometimes I enjoy. Money was ok.
8 months ago, I had a work accident, the company did support me only after I got a lawyer and only with the surgery cost - but it was all super expensive because I had to do it in a different country.
I spent months at home, alone, going out only for PT. I started work after 2 months super freaked out that I will get fired, my creativity was down and I couldn't work properly. PT got increasingly more challenging and I am tired all the time but I need to do it.
My dog got sick and it cost all my savings to save him.
My bf works 24/7 because he has a low paying job and his father has cancer and all money goes on his treatment. He doesn't take care of himself as in wears dirty clothes, doesn't take a shower etc, so we had 0 sex. When I did want to try again, I realised my endometriosis is back and I might need another surgery.
Also my mom's health is not good but she kinda hid it (now I feel bad for saving the dog) and she is exhausted from caring for my grandma (her mother in law) and father - who is super old fashioned and lazy. He does no chores and makes money only for house bills. My mom does all the heavy lifting.
I am so behind at work, so tired all the time probably because of the mental load, I go to therapy but I feel everything keeps getting worse. The work accident, then endometriosis and no sex cuz it hurts too bad, then the dog illness plus now I take care of it, my mom is not well and my dad is a lazy asshole, that I am also worried about because his health is shit. He is having a gold bladder removal tomorrow and I wouldn't be surprised if something this simple causes complications for him.
I used to have a mediocre life and go on a vacation a year, worry about easy stuff. Now I am in debt, with probably one more year of PT ahead for my knee and, everyone around me is sick too, even the dog.
I feel like there is no light in sight. I feel like crying when friends share photos from their vacations and walks on our group Whatsapp group.
What helped you go through difficult times in life? How did you keep your hope alive and had motivation to oush through?
No one is coming. There is no prince charming who will fall in love with me and get me out of this shithole. No rich connected friend who can offer me a better job. No miracle course that can get me a higher earning job in 6 months. I just need to stay focused and take it one at a time. But it's so damn hard. I don't know how to do it. I feel so alone and miserable and I want a good life for myself.

2023.05.28 14:10 azmat_system $CLOV – Biden and McCarthy agree to raise the US debt ceiling. The deal, if enacted by Congress, would take the volatile issue off the table beyond the next presidential election. President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached a tentative agreement to raise the debt ceiling.
President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached a tentative agreement to raise the debt ceiling, ending a three-month-long standoff that threatened to trigger a US default.
The deal, if enacted, would boost the nation's borrowing limit for two years and take the volatile issue of America’s credit worthiness off the table until after the next presidential election.
The pact would also put in place what McCarthy described Saturday as "historic" spending limits that are also expected to be in place for the same period of time.
The announcement comes just days before the US government is expected to run out of money to pay all its bills. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that could happen June 5.
Biden and McCarthy ironed out the final details during two phone calls Saturday. "We still have a lot of work to do but I believe this is an agreement in principle that is worthy of the American people," said McCarthy late Saturday.
Biden, in a statement, said the "agreement represents a compromise, which means not everyone gets what they want."
"It is an important step forward that reduces spending while protecting critical programs for working people and growing the economy for everyone," he added.
But Wall Street can’t relax just yet. The leaders now have a difficult task of selling controversial provisions to skeptical lawmakers on both sides of the aisle so the agreement can be enacted into law. Deep reservations have been evident from both the left and from the right for weeks.
McCarthy only offered sparse details to reporters on Saturday, saying he wanted to talk with his members first.
President Biden also spoke Saturday with Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), two men who will be tasked with lining up Democratic votes in the days ahead.
In a statement Saturday night, Maya MacGuineas of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget noted that the deal, if it passes, "would be the first major deficit-reducing budget agreement in almost a dozen years and would signal Washington is serious about making progress in addressing our mounting national debt."

2023.05.28 13:58 Excellent_Engine_716 The Top 5 Challenges E-comm Owners Face in 2023
How to pick your target audience
To sell effectively you must know who you’re selling to. Nowadays, when demographics, motivations, goals, and frustrations are more flexible than ever before, finding your target audience can be a hassle.
The convenient solution is to map out buyer personas which, although based on statistics, give you a good idea of your consumer. Buyer personas include demographics, motivations, goals, and frustrations.
Whether it be email marketing, social media, or blogs, always have your buyer persona in mind when carrying these out.
Converting viewers into buyers
E-comm owners know your website gaining attention doesn’t pay the bills. They must get as far as purchasing your product or service.
The first step is to understand WHY your customers don’t reach for their wallet. Inconsistent user experience, un-interactive buttons, 404-pages, or a broken payment system are fatal when attempting to convert viewers into buyers.
However, you may need to look at the bigger picture. Are you targeting the right audience. Is your brand memorable? Are you building trust with your consumer?
By fulfilling these, your chances of converting will skyrocket.
Offering high-quality customer service
Although a part of it, customer service doesn’t just mean replying to customers as soon as they message.
Customer service is much more. The biggest problem with e-comm brands is that they don’t develop a personal approach to customer service. You must deal with customers in a warm way to understand their frustrations and build on your buyer persona.
Consider other forms of communication like social media, live chat, or email. Your customers will find it easier to deal with your business and are therefore more willing to return.
Building customer loyalty
Based on statistics, it is easier to re-engage current customers than to obtain new ones which means that should be your focus.
Offer your customers more than just a great product. Take up content marketing by starting a blog post for instance. And offer discounts to show that you care.
This encourages previous customers to revisit you regularly and possibly make a purchase.
Choosing the right tech partners
Often the problem doesn’t lie in your product or marketing strategy, but because you haven’t taken care when choosing tech partners.
The solution? Pick the right one!
This means taking due diligence with the platform/tech you’re selecting whether it be email marketing, shopping cart solution, or inventory management software.
Also, picking tech that falls under your niche is vital. They understand you better and have worked with e-comm stores like yours. In short, they’re your best bet!
