2023.06.06 11:50 clfitz Lenses for a used D7100

Like the title says. I bought a used D7100 about a month ago, and I'm now shopping for used lenses. I'm looking at zooms, just because of the versatility they provide. I'm sticking with used lenses, except I may consider a new 35mm because it's cheap enough new. I would probably not use it much, but I had a 50mm Pentax lens with my first (film) camera, and insist on having one now. (I know that's probably silly, but still...)
Priority for me is sharpness. I have a Canon 5D2 and a 20mm EF lens (also bought used), and the lens is pretty soft. Software sharpening works, but I just don't like it much, once I figured out how it looks. I then decided that, with my budget, I'd be much better off with APS-C than with full-frame, and experience with a D5100 a couple years ago taught me that I like the overall feel of Nikon better, so here I am.
I shoot outdoor stuff like landscapes and scenics, and I'm planning on attending a raptor photography workshop later this year. So, I'd like to cover the range of 20mm-300mm up to 450mm full-frame equivalent. I'm an amateur, and I'd like to improve enough that I could enter a couple of shows, and maybe sell a few prints. If not, no biggie; I like the activity more than selling things. I'm also not too concerned about a future upgrade to mirrorless, because I'm already old and unless I win the lottery that won't happen. I also had mirrorless Olympus, and didn't like the EVF too much.
So, here's a question: If I was looking at Canon, I'd know to look at their "L" line of lenses. What is the Nikon equivalent, if it exists in DX format?
And another question: I've read that I can mount and use full-frame lenses without issue, but I read in this thread that I'd lose zoom range (especially wide-angle) if I did so. Can someone confirm and elaborate?
Also, budget: I'd like to stay under $800.00 if possible, on good used gear. I've done some shopping at KEH and MPB, and have found a couple lenses that should do it. Here's what I've found so far:
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 12-24mm f/4 G ED IF Autocus APS-C
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4 G ED VR Autofocus APS-C
(I tried to link but Reddit wouldn't let me.)
Sorry for writing a book. I try to keep things brief, but I rarely succeed.
Edited for clarity and grammar.

2023.06.06 04:49 simonto1997 Should I go for Nikon d7500?

I’m an amateur photographer with very little experience.
I used to have D7000 and later on Canon EOS 70D and never took the time to understand cameras, lenses, functionalities, lighting, shadows, editing, etc…
I just watched a few videos here and there and just went out to take photos and enjoyed it.
I went to work for Google as a software engineer and neglected photography for a few years.
Now I feel ready to learn and experiment on a daily basis.
My first task was an extensive research as to what camera to buy and oh boy the amount of knowledge and contradictions I tackled…
Basically in the fight of Mirrorless vs DSLR cameras I chose to go with DSLR (not a budget problem).
Within the DSLRs I chose to go with Nikon.
Between the low end and high end equipment I chose to go with D7500.
As for lens, I’m not sure if I should buy d7500 used with used lenses as well or just go for a bundle with kit and a supplemental Len (24-70).
Now, what I’m interested at: - Only photos - minimal video usage, if at all - products photography (E.g e-commerce) - leggings and clothing photography - portraits
With all of that being said, am I making the right decision here?
What other data is required for you to help me choose better?
Highly appreciated.

2023.06.04 19:32 Skribbl-io What digicam should i buy? :D

Hey i recently fell in love with shooting on older digicams.
Even though i have a Canon IXUS 155, i really want to expand my collection with an older modell, wich has more of a vintage colour scheme, bringing back the early two thousands in my pictures. :)
Im talking about something similar like the Nikon Coolpix S80 released in 2010 or something even more authentic and maybe even film like. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRI_jNjAvoQ Coolpix S80 Sample Pixs)
If you have any suggestions please feel free to answer.

2023.06.04 18:06 Imaginary_Ice_2899 Lumix S5iiX V-mount connection

I just purchased S5iiX to upgrade my gear form a Nikon D3500.
I want to connect the S5iiX with a v-Mount battery. Leaning towards the Smallrig batteries. Now, I do not want to connect it to the USB-C port as I wiill have a SSD connected there.
A bit of research I found the Panasonic dummy battery PANASONIC LUMIX DMW-DCC17. Reading about it, this is for an AC adapter which I am not interested.
Can I use the PANASONIC LUMIX DMW-DCC17 dummy battery to connect it to the Smallrig V-Mount battery V99 or V50, both have a 8V output. Batteries of the S5iiX are 7.2V. Manual says the camera is 9V. The adapter outputs 8.4V. If all my data is correct the Camera seems it would accept and could handle 8V.
I guess the adapter is to convert 240v to 8.4V output. So the Batteries directly outputing 8V should be fine.
As the PANASONIC LUMIX DMW-DCC17 requires an adapter, can I use the Smallrig batteries or any V-Mount battery directly to the Dummy battery, would that work, without any sort adapter in the middle?
I just want to be sure before spending the extra money, or have my camera in danger of damaging it. Seen videos about vmount batteries but no one actually talks about how to set them up, voltage and stuff.

2023.06.04 10:57 xd-Mocchaa Shooting my very first music video

I’m planning on shooting my very first music video, this is not a professional level video at all. I’m in highschool and one of my friends made a song so I’m going to make a video for him, I’m skilled with after effects and premier, so the editing side isn’t what I’m worrying about. But for the filming side I have some questions on whether or not somethings are worth buying.
I’m going to shoot on a Nikon d7500 as I already own it for photography, is purchasing a gimble necessary or can I handheld and be fine?
Is an external camera monitor needed? or is it a waste of money as I’m just doing this video for fun.
Would you recommend purchasing an ND filter, lots of videos I’ve been watching have recommend to do so.
If there’s anything you believe that would be worth purchasing please let me know in the comments, thanks.

2023.06.04 07:33 andreifasola Canon 5d4 SPOT meter vs Sekonic L758cine SPOT (camera reads less issue)

While doing a light test today I noticed my 5d4's internal meter reads less than my sekonic. Using a grey card I determined that the sekonic's bubble reads the same as the spot, so all good, and - using a 70-200 f4mk2 at 200mm - the 5d4 reads -2/3 stops vs the sekonic. In my tests earlier I thought I was reading a -1 stop difference.
Oddly in all the other modes, like evaluative (hence why 200mm choice to frame the grey card), 5d4 reads -1/3. When I switch to spot it would want to read -1/3 if I stay on the card; as I meter other zones and come back it will give -2/3 less than the sekonic.
Is this normal? am I asking too much of my 5d4? I would expect it to be top notch since this cam was a flagship. I had a Nikon D600 (sold last year) and iirc, the spot on that camera was matching the sekonic's spot perfectly (I recall testing it).
edit: after researching a bit I see that even the light meter might not be calibrated - anyway - whoever got some advice on how to see if my gear is calibrated, shoot. I'm matching the sekonic with the 5d4 in the meantime.

2023.06.04 05:24 andreifasola Canon 5d4 SPOT meter VS Sekonic L-758cine SPOT (Canon meters 1 stop less)

I was running some light tests and I noticed a 1 STOP difference between 5d4 spot and 758cine spot; shooting in Manual Mode. The canon reads one stop less relative to the sekonic. I bought the sekonic my self new and kept it in good conditions, in its pouch in a backpack, all pampered, so I would assume that it's in great shape. The 5d4 was bought second hand last year and I wonder if it has issues - unless there is a metering compensation function somewhere. I tried metering both with a 16-35mk3 and 70-200f4mk2 (new lens) - same results.
I had a Nikon D600 before - and off the top of my head the camera spot was matching the sekonic.
I will go to a store too and try metering with their in store cameras. But anybody got a clue as to why I might have these differences? any metering compensation feature for the manual mode? will dive into the manual too but asking in case anybody got an answer quickly.
EDIT: using a grey card I checked that the bubble and the spot on the sekonic match. The camera on the card (using 200mm) reads -1/3 from the meter in all modes except spot where it reads -2/3 stops. Weird stuff, I noticed that if I go into say evaluative, then I switch to spot as I meter the reading stays -1/3. But if I meter other things and come back to it, the spot will give -2/3.
EDIT2: edit: after researching a bit I see that even the light meter might not be calibrated, in spite of me thinking the camera's meter was at fault - anyway - whoever got some advice on how to properly check if the gear is calibrated by ISO standards, shoot. I'm matching the sekonic with the 5d4 in the meantime.

2023.06.03 20:55 ccasazza Trying to prioritize what I need to get my photos to next level

I am trying to figure out what I should be prioritizing as my next upgrade or skill to get better at. Here is my latest DSO capture of the Pinwheel galaxy:https://www.astrobin.com/gpzhdw/ (30, 5 min exposures, 4 darks, 15 flats and bias processed in pixinsight, PS & topaz)
I currently use an AM5 Mount, Zenithstar 73, Nikon D7500, the ZWO guide scope with planetary camera and the Asiair pro.
I am thinking my next upgrade should be an astro dedicated mono camera with filters since I am in a bortle 9 (the pic above was taken on vacation in a bortle 2).
I am curious what skills I should be improving to get a sharper and more colorful image than I have now? Do I need better focusing? better flats or darks?

Open to all feedback. thank you!

2023.06.03 18:05 BirdyLikesMen Help with D500

I'm new to bird photography and I currently mostly use a Nikon D500 paired with a Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6g ed vr. I mostly shoot birds in low light conditions and I use auto-iso and have set the limit to 3200. I usually get incredibly noisy and dark photos at F/5.6 1/800-1/1250 max iso. Even when conditions are relatively bright, I still get incredibly dark photos at F/5.6 1/800-1/1250 at max iso. Should I increase my maximum ISO for auto-iso? I'm afraid this would cause even noisier photos.

2023.06.03 16:31 FizzlePie Looking for new camera body

Hey all,
Looking to upgrade from my d7200. Took a spill and it looks like it’s not turning back on :(((
My photography interests right now are in wildlife and landscape. Astrophotography is on my radar- mainly landscape Astro, not deep sky objects.
As for budget, I’m thinking around $1500. I can afford to stretch it but I’d rather spend money on lenses. Right now I have the dx 18-55 and 70-300 that came with the bundle that I got the d7200 with.
I’ve seen the d500 and d7500 recommended for wildlife. Would they perform fine for landscapes and astrophotography?

A friend of mine is getting into photography and she has a Nikon d7500 that she got secondhand for a good price. She's been thinking about making photography her job and I would like to give her a little present. She takes mostly nature and landscape photography.
I found these lenses second hand and I would like to know if any of these lenses are a good fit for her camera (compatible) and her landscape photography style.
Sorry for the lack of info, I don't know much about cameras and lenses 😶
Thank you! I appreciate the help!
