Visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame today in Canton. It was one hell of an experience and highly recommend it if you happen to be in the Ohio area. Lots of football history and people volunteering with tons of knowledge of the history. I got to speak with Simon via a live Teams meeting to talk Jags in the UK. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have 100 days until kickoff! Finally, thank God for Frank Gore and it was always the Jags!

2023.06.02 15:31 ExtremistPeacemaker 1991 to June of 2023 history of the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy قارشيرصكئ سلطنة الإسلامية Исламский султанат Карширский

In 1991, the idea of a Muslim-majority state within the USA that allied itself with the USA and protected North American Muslims from hate crimes, Riba, Haram things, and sectarian violence was born. It was based on the legend of Qarser, that there was once an ancient Live Oak tree somewhere on the Virginia Peninsula but the tips of the leaves had a V-shaped indentation, rather than protrusion like any other Live Oak tree, making it a tree which bore heart-shaped leaves. The Native Americans met with Muslims from West Africa to trade under this rare tree with the beautiful leaf mutations. When the White settlers came, the Native Americans and West-African Muslims fled or were pushed out West and their unwritten history and culture was destroyed and the tree was cut down. This legend has a few variations and is used as a justification for the Virginia Peninsula being the specific location of an independent Muslim micronation. Qarsherskiyan nationalists still tell this tale today. The movement for an independent Muslim country had few supporters and many critics and locals chased off any Muslims who tried to buy land in the area. Ultimately the plan failed but was written down and recording in several notebooks and diaries which were hidden in the walls of a few houses in Virginia and Ohio belonging to members of the former movement. As time when on, the houses needed renovations and the notebooks discussing the plan and its reasoning and failures and successes were found. In 2005, a boy named Brennan White was born in London, Ohio and began growing into a very interesting kid, with unusually fast rate of maturity, able to speak full sentences before being one year old and walking by one years of age as well, according to his grandmother who raised him until we was about 3 years old. Brennan studied horticulture lessons for children at only age 3 and could explain how to create hybrids of trees and name and identify various plants and animals at age 4. By 2019, American teenagers and pre-teens from Muslim-American backgrounds found these notebooks after homeowners in the area did as the notebooks instructed and handed it to someone from the local Islamic community upon being found. It was the Powerplant Group, a powerful conglomeration of groups of kids and teenagers from Ohio, West Virginia, and Ohio named for their love of Urbex adventures and previous explorations of abandoned powerplants and cooling towers. In the same year, 2019, one female member named Powerplant 'Aisha based in Vermilion and Lorain in the state of Ohio got hold of all the notebooks and took particular interest, announcing the re-formation of the Muslim state in the USA and never officially naming it but calling it several names including Qarsherskiy. Nearby, on East 21st Street, Lorain, Ohio, USA, Brennan White had slowly matured over the years researching geography, religion, language, horticulture and botany, entomology, and science to INCREDIBLY OBSESSIVE levels for over a decade. He was particularly fascinated by Wicca and Black Magick but by fall of 2020 his shift had focused to Indian and South Asian societies a bit more, as well as Chinese and Hispanic traditions. In 2020, Powerplant 'Aisha and the Powerplant Group consolidated power over the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy although it still wasn't officially named that and hadn't declared independence. They began working with Brennan to make up a non-existent Island-Nation online called Aleialei Atoll in order to trick people online into believing a small, rich Pacific island nation existed and needed their help. It wasn't a scam but a ploy targeting the enemies of Qarsherskiy solely to lead them down an internet rabbit-hole and waste their time, distracting the enemies of Qarsherskiy from spreading slander online. Thousands of footage and images of beautiful beaches around the world were uploaded by over 30 members of the powerplant group all across social media and labelled as ''Aleialei Atoll" while lore, culture, and history of Aleialei Atoll was made up and posted online. Anyone who slandered Qarsherskiy or the powerplant group online would be directed to research Aleialei Atoll with some vague statement about the place and suddenly hours of researching the mysterious and unknown "country" would ensue. By sping of 2021, Aleialei Atoll had been exposed and the powerplant group hired hackers to take down 99.7% of all content related to the project from the internet. A new fictional nation called Bahariterra was made up in Spring of 2021 and an average of 250 YouTube videos a week went up. Any time any of the 30+ members of the Powerplant Group saw food, palm trees, beaches, or something interesting from a foreign culture, it was uploaded online as something from "Bahariterra" and before long thousands of hours of content a week went up and long paragraphs of information on various websites misled Qarsherskiy's online slanderers down a new rabbit-hole. By the end of 2021, Brennan's family began preparations to move to Newport News, Virginia, officially leaving Lorain, Ohio on 1st January 2022, and arriving late at night to a hotel in (downtown?) Newport News. the next morning, 2nd January 2022, Brennan and his family had settled in a new home and were finishing putting luggage away. After a year of Brennan exploring the area with his local friends, obsessing over the last few hundred years of history in the area, and meeting people who would convert to Islam or were already Muslims, Brennan learned in late December of 2022 of local neo-Nazi groups called Bombenfein who spoke a Germanic conlang and believed in an esoteric radical re-interpretation of Christianity that favoured Whites and sought to kill racial and religious minorities, Brennan knew it was a matter of time before the Islamic Sultanate of Qarsherskiy would declare independence, especially when police continuously failed to protect the freedom and safety of many local American Muslims and other minorities. Despite not having access to the internet at the time due to being in trouble with his family, Brennan secretly began getting his friend to represent him online and spread a message of his bravery and good leadership and plans for Qarsherskiy. Qarsherskiy would be a sultanate but if the sultan leaves no successor or if people dislike him and overthrow him, Qarsherskiyan law states the new sultan and their royal family gets elected into power by the people's choice and votes. Brennan began pushing his campaign and became the sultan of Qarsherskiy. On 28 March 2023, Qarsherskiy elected the first Emir and Sultan and declared its independence. Brennan became the sultan, Ali Aq-Qarsherskiyy At-Tariq AL-Akbar, and instantly opposed neo-Nazi threats to Qarsherskiy, helping his micronation of 1,947 people called Qarsherskiy in a two month struggle against Neo-Nazism known as the PondWater Neo-Nazi Wars, which ended in the Battle of BasaraQ exactly 2 months later on 28 May 2023 with Sultan Ali's victorious army praising his leadership. Qarsherskiy and its nearly 2,000 citizens then nearly had a Sunni-Shi'a Civil War which was put down peacefully by the sultan Ali. From 31 March 2023 to 3 June 2023, several attempts by the mere 17 Alawites in Qarsherskiy to overthrow and take over the government of Qarsherskiy failed. Qarsherskiy than began a healing process after its first two months were lived in chaos.

2023.06.02 00:00 Budzy05 Hotels that have an emphasis on dogs?

I'm going on a road trip to BrewDog DogHouse in Ohio. I thought it was really cool that their Brewery/Hotel cater to dogs really well. They have a dog park, treatos, and dog-friendly areas to hang out with your dog and have a beer or two.
Are there any other destinations in the US that cater to dogs really well other than "They're allowed to stay in the room?"

2023.06.01 15:56 Salty_Invite_757 [Kings Island][Kentucky Kingdom] Trip Report 5/30-5/31

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Ohio/Kentucky. My son and I planned on hitting King's Island for a day then a quick stopover at Kentucky Kingdom on the way back home. Our first stop was the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, and while it isn't related to roller coasters it was an absolute delight to see all of these birds up close. The XB-70, SR-71, B2 and Memphis Belle were highlights!
We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Mason, a decent and well-kept hotel with free breakfast - always a big plus in this economy. We spent one whole day at Kings Island on Tuesday. It was hot but manageable. We had a free meal included in our tickets and split a burger at the Brewhouse; it was good! Not the best but definitely not the worst theme park food I've had. We left around 2PM to take it easy so we could recharge for the run-up to park close. We got back to KI around 6 and had a blast for the rest of our day! We snagged the last night ride on The Beast before they shut down the line at 9:30, AND we timed our last ride on Mystic Timbers with the fireworks so as we were leaving the ride the show started up immediately - it felt like some Disney-level theme park magic. Seeing the drones spell out Kings Island in the sky left our jaws on the floor. Overall a fantastic park with a welcoming and warm vibe, and some of the best ops in the industry.
Kentucky Kingdom was a quick (and I mean QUICK) stopover on our way back home. We got there early on Wednesday and I got 4 more credits before calling it a day. We stayed for a little over an hour and I feel like we got our money's worth from Lightening Run and Storm Chaser alone. We enjoyed our hour at KK, but all of the coasters felt like "one and dones", and I really just drove here for the credits (and the fridge magnets…I used to collect smashed pennies but I didn't know what to do with them, then shot glasses but then I stopped drinking, so now its magnets from our trips that we are covering our fridge with). The park itself has a very odd layout and kind of feels slapped together in places, but the ops were great and everyone was friendly.
Here's my breakdown of the rides themselves:
Kings Island:
Flight of Fear x1: 8/10, Great launch, theming and first half. Like I told my kid before we boarded, its like Space Mountain on crack.
Orion x1: 9/10, Outstanding speed, airtime and pacing. Just wish it had 1-2 more elements to round it out.
Backlot Stunt Coaster x1: 8/10, Fantastic punchy launch and fun theming. Got some serious laterals on that parking garage helix!
The Beast x4: 10/10, DAMN this this is a BEAST. Thanks to this subreddit we stuck with Row 17 and it was butter-smooth the whole time (I'm getting too old for the jostling that normally comes with wooden coasters) which allowed us to enjoy the scenery and the forces. That banked drop into the final helix is such a rush, hitting the bottom of that hill is a top tier roller coaster moment. FANTASTIC night ride, the only thing that's come close for me is Outlaw Run at night.
Mystic Timbers x3: 8/10, We thought this was kinda mid in the daytime, but it hits different at night. I think the stuff with the shed was ill-conceived, but it could be utilized during Halloween (I'm assuming they have scare actors around that time of year? The floor seemed to accommodate foot traffic, but I could be wrong). Its fast and frenetic but like Orion its missing 1-2 elements, especially given its speed once it hits the brakes.
Flying Ace Aerial Chase x1: 5/10, We rode this after eating and thought it would be a nice ride to do while our food settled. It was an average family ride, a bit rougher than it looks but fine for what it is. One train ops made it a slog to wait for.
Adventure Express x2: 8/10, Probably my favorite Arrow mine train. Cheeky theming, long layout and a great troll at the end. Transitions were rough but that added to the theme.
The Bat x1: 8/10, Fast, scenic and intense! An enjoyable albeit brief flight through the woods in a well-shaded corner of the park.
Banshee x1: 10/10, B&M inverts are some of my least-favored coasters due to the utter lack of visibility on any row but the first, but luckily we got to ride this bastard in the front row. WAY more intense than any other B&M invert I've ridden, and that's including the Dueling Dragons. It's an all-timer!
Invertigo x1: 8/10, A solid boomerang with a couple of fun gimmicks. I was expecting a ton of head rattle due to the manufacturer and restrains, but it was fine. A lot more intense than it looks, pretty underrated ride.
Diamondback x1: 10/10, Everything here is fantastic, the pacing, airtime, speed and location put this one near the top for B&M hypers. I still prefer Mako and Goliath, but Diamondback gives them a run for their money!
Racer x1: 7/10, An enjoyable classic! Didn't feel painfully rough (but was the roughest woodie of the trip for sure).
Kentucky Kingdom:
Lightening Run x1: 9/10, This little guy packs a PUNCH! Airtime out the wazoo and doesn't let up for a second! I thought it destroyed my thighs, that is until I rode…
Storm Chaser x1: 8/10, Almost too much of a good thing - that good thing being ejector airtime. The layout is unconventional in that RMC kind of way, and that first drop is all kinds of weird. But the ejector became painful, knocking it down a peg. The very definition of a "one and done".
Thunder Run x1: 9/10, A great underrated woodie! It was not nearly as rough as I was expecting - still some jackhammering here and there, but all manageable. I didn't have to brace myself as much as the previous two coasters, which was a welcome experience after being assaulted like that.
Roller Skater x1: 6/10, A fine family coaster. Not much to say about it really, just rode it for the credit (and since Kentucky Flier was down).
Overall a very enjoyable trip! 3 days, 2 theme parks, 1 museum, 850 miles and 4 states. With this trip my coaster count is up to 95, while my son doesn't have one because he thinks it's weird and lame that I keep track of things like that. Teenagers. But I know he enjoyed himself based on the reserved amount of "teenage angst" he experienced during this trip. I think the short lines and quick pace kept him entertained throughout. Which is what it's all about!

2023.06.01 15:49 thecrowqueen27 How to report abuse (USA)

TW: police, physical violence, drug use
Hi all! I (27f) am a survivor of DV based in the USA. This may not be all of the ways to report abuse, but these are just some that I know of that I have used actually in my own struggle to get free for my abuser. If anyone has more to add, feel free to comment them on this post :)
  1. Save or screenshot any/all text messages, voicemails, social media messages etc that are abusive from your abuser. If your abuser goes through your phone, send them to someone you trust to keep them as evidence.
  2. If the abuse is physical, and there are marks left, go into the bathroom with your phone, after said abuse has taken place and take pictures of every single mark that your abuser has left on you. (Send to someone you trust to keep them safe as evidence if abuser looks through phone)
  3. In the United States of America, you can text 911 so that way your abuser doesn’t hear you on the phone. What I have done is I barricaded myself in the bathroom and texted 911. Make sure you text them the address of where you’re located, the name, age, and description of your abuser as well as if they have weapons or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Also, if your abuser has access to a vehicle (their own and/or yours) text them a description of the vehicles makes models color and license plate (if you don’t know the plate numbers, just the state is fine). An example of what you would text 911 (this is just a scenario, use this example only as such, also not all of this has to be sent in 1 message)
  1. Press charges and get a restraining order. Pressing charges will allow you to go in front of a judge and tell them about the abuse. Any evidence you have of the abuse will NEED TO BE PRINTED OUT. There are no phones allowed in a courtroom. Once the judge has heard your testimony as well as seen the evidence, your abuser could be charged and sent to jail. Getting a restraining order doesn’t have to wait until after the case, you can file for a restraining order at any time. You will need to go to the court to get it approved or denied by the judge. If your restraining order is approved, your abuser will be served. In most states (correct me if I’m wrong please 🙏) your abuser can try to appeal (make the R.O nonexistent) the order, at that time you will get another court date. Bring witnesses of abuse or witness statements, any and all evidence, as well as the RO. In most cases, once the judge sees all the evidence again, hears your testimony again ,there will most likely not be an appeal to your restraining order, and a restraining order will still stay in place.
If you are leaving your abuser and you will be homeless by doing so here are some tips:
  1. Call a DV shelter. If you don’t know of any, google should be able to help.
  2. If google doesn’t seem to help you find a shelter call 211. 211 is a helpline that finds you resources in your area. Explain your situation briefly, and ask them for help finding shelters.
  3. FRIENDS! if you have friends that can house you, make sure they know why you’re needing to be housed. If you have a restraining order in place, bring it with you and let your friends know there is one in place. This will make them feel more comfortable about housing you (I know 1st hand)
** DV shelters (at least the ones I’ve tried to get into) require a police report, case number, and/or a restraining order before they can get you a bed there**
Hope this helps at least 1 person get out of DV. We are all strong and beautiful people who deserve better.

2023.05.31 21:20 Comfortable_Dust_567 420 friendly psychiatrists

Hey everyone. I'm looking for a 420 friendly psychiatrist. I would prefer one that does telehealth visits, but I'm open to in person (in NE Ohio - Canton/Akron). I have ADHD, so I do take a stimulant for that, and I know many doctors in Ohio are weird about that with a mmj rx. I do have a current script for vyvanse from my psychiatrist, but he has been hard to get in touch with lately, and I feel like I may need to make a change soon. Thanks!
Edit to add: I already have my mmj card. Just looking for a psychiatrist for my mental health.

Taiwan’s secessionist DPP channels profits to US politicians via covert means like buying over their family, NGOsBy GT staff reportersPublished: Sep 28, 2022 08:34 PM

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities on the island of Taiwan have been channeling large amounts of money to US congressmen who support "Taiwan independence," by either directly funding them or indirectly through the congressmen's affiliated businesses or Taiwan groups stationed in the US, the Global Times has found.
It adopted an approach, in which civil groups extent invitations to US politicians but the DPP authorities eventually pay them using public assets, in order to escape US congressional constraints.
By reviewing related information, the Global Times found that under the pretext that Taiwan is a participant in the US State Department's Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act, the DPP authorities have frequently invited US congressmen, their assistants, and congressional experts to visit the island under the pretense of universities and research institutions, whose "white gloves" have given legitimacy to high-profile receptions, including providing first-class flights, luxury hotels, leisure and entertainment, and paying exorbitant "commission fees." In fact, all activities were arranged and paid for by the DPP authorities.
Former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo has paid his second trip to China's Taiwan this week, trumpeting that the island was "an independent country," as he spoke at a business forum at the invitation of pro-secessionist media Liberty Times.
The Global Times learned that he will allegedly take "commission fees" from companies including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), China Steel Corporation, I-MEI Foods Co Ltd and CHIMEI Corporation.
In his previous visit to the island in March, Pompeo was paid $150,000 for a speech, under the terms of an agreement signed by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the US and US-based company Premiere Speakers Bureau, according to Taiwan media reports.
Analysts pointed out that Pompeo has turned the island of Taiwan into a "cash cow," reaping large amounts of profits while also accumulating political capital for his future plan to run for president. While the DPP authorities, wearing a "white glove" by appearing as a civil society group, have taken benefits from behind to attract more votes in the upcoming local elections in November.
The DPP also paid huge amounts of money to welcome Ed Royce, a "pro-Taiwan independence" Republican congressman, who visited the island in his "farewell trip" before retirement in 2018, according to media reports.
What's more, the DPP has raised the budget for "foreign guest reception" in 2023 to some NT$430 million ($13.6 million) from NT$370 million, an increase of 16 percent.
Apart from directly channeling profits, the DPP has been catering to affiliated or family businesses of US members of Congress, analysts noted.
In April this year, US Senator Lindsey Graham led a congressional delegation to Taiwan including Senator Robert Portman, during which they met with regional leader Tsai Ing-wen and other local politicians. The US senators forcefully asked the DPP to buy 24 Boeing 787 airplanes, with the price mounting to some $8 billion, local media reports said.
It is worth noting that the airliners would be built in South Carolina, where Graham is based, and the engine would be manufactured in Ohio, where Portman is based.
Then on August 30, the China Airlines in Taiwan announced it would buy 16 Boeing 787 planes to replace its ageing fleet of Airbus A330s, Reuters reported. The total cost was some $4.6 billion.
Also in August, while US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was on her provocative visit to the island of Taiwan, her son Paul Pelosi Jr secretly joined the trip, but his name was not on the official delegation list.
Paul is president of EVSX Corporation. The company is engaged in electric vehicle battery recycling and the development of lithium mineral resources. As Taiwan is rich in lithium resources, it was believed that his trip was aimed at seeking profit for his own business, media reports said.
The transfer of benefits is also made through Taiwan groups in the US. For one thing, they were mobilized to campaign for "pro-Taiwan independence" legislators in the US. For example, when Marco Rubio ran for the Republican presidential candidate in 2016, he received donations from many Taiwan associations in the US, and from companies or banks in the island.
"US-Taiwan Business Council," "North America Taiwanese Professors' Association," and some other organizations and institutes have also campaigned for legislators through donations, canvassing, and policy advising. "Formosan Association for Public Affairs" has long provided support and campaigning for Steve Chabot, a member of the US House of Representatives, and pushed for the Taiwan Travel Act.
In addition, the DPP authorities have given profits to the US politicians through public relations firms. The Global Times learned from gathered information that, to push for Pelosi's visit, Taiwan authorities hired ex-congressman Dick Gephardt for $22,000 a month to lobby in the US. From February 2018 to April this year, Gephardt lobbied Pelosi for 16 times, for which the DPP paid another $3.15 million.
The DPP also hired over 10 public relation firms including Nickles Group to frequently lobby members of Congress.
Information from the US Department of Justice showed that from 2016 to 2020, the DPP spent more than $12 million on public relations lobbying in the US, on average $3 million per year. Taiwan's other agencies also invested more than $9 million in this regard.

2023.05.31 05:21 Schweedish Air Travel with the little ones

Looking for opinions, when do you all/when did you all first try flying with your little ones?
The wife, my son and I just got back from what may be one of the more stressful trips we’ve ever attempted. Plan was to go out to Italy with the in-laws for my MIL’s 60th birthday. Our son is 15 months old. We knew that this would be quite the trip with a 9 hour flight from JFK to FCO. However, we never even had the chance to attempt the flight. Our connecting flight was not terrible but the little guy was obviously not enjoying it, pulling on ears, general fussiness which is not typical. We get to JFK and he takes a short nap in his stroller so we are thinking we are in the clear, if only we knew what was in store for the evening… he didn’t want to eat which was again, odd and did not want to be still. Only happy if being walked around. We put him in his stroller to walk around again about an hour before boarding. We walk about 10 steps before the poor guy vomits all over himself, the stroller and the middle of terminal 4… after cleaning everything up he proceeds to throw up 3-4 more times before we were able to get rescheduled and book a hotel for the night because we definitely weren’t taking him on that plane. We ended up calling it the second day after signs of not feeling better and discussions about not wanting to put him in distress for our personal gain (trip to Italy) since he wouldn’t remember much if anything anyhow. Got our bags and rented a car to drive back to Ohio. Quite the Memorial Day weekend over here!
So long question short, when do you all think is the right time to take your little ones on planes? Any other horror stories?

2023.05.31 03:30 rem1473 Pan Ohio Hope ride seeking additional ham radio volunteers

We are still looking for additional volunteers for the 2023 Pan Ohio Hope Ride (POHR). POHR is a charitable bicycle ride that supports the American Cancer Society. It is a 4-day ride that spans the state from Cleveland to Cincinnati, with overnight stays along the way in Wooster, Westerville, and Dayton.
We are currently looking for assistance in the following roles:
SAG (Support and Gear) drivers SAG drivers follow along the route in their personal vehicles and provide assistance to cyclists in need. They are provided a tote of equipment (spare tubes, air pump, snacks, water, Gatorade, other misc. supplies) at the beginning of the event and are expected to return unused items at the end. SAG drivers are coordinated and dispatched using MARCS interop channels with amateur UHF simplex for use between vehicles. Anyone with their own MARCS radio is welcome to use it. For all other volunteers, cache MARCS radios will be signed out each day. SAG drivers are offered prepaid overnight lodging in hotels along the route. They are also provided food every day. Fuel receipts can be submitted at the conclusion of the event for reimbursement if desired. We would love to have SAG drivers accompany us for all 4 days but will accept volunteers for any individual days as well. We would prefer that SAG volunteers are able to commit to at least one full day.
Rest Stop Transportation Officers Transportation officers will be assigned to rest stops along the route. Transportation officers will be responsible for coordinating SAG pickups at each rest stop, assigning waiting riders to available SAG vehicles as they arrive on site, and then reporting all pickups to net control via radio (MARCS, simplex, or ham repeater depending on cache radio availability) or telephone. Each water stop is open for several hours so the time commitment for this role will not be significant.
An amateur radio comms plan will be in place for all days of the event, but will serve as a backup with MARCS being the primary means of communication whenever possible.
Anyone interested in volunteering for this event, or with any questions about the event should contact Mat Nickoson, KC8NZJ [email protected]
As a side note, I’ve heard many comments from people regarding the past communications leadership of this event. I want to assure everyone that the event is being run by a new group (Event Support Group www.n8esg.org) as of around 2019 and ALL amateurs are welcome and encouraged to participate in this event!
Thanks again and I look forward to your assistance!

Why do you love your town? (northern Ohio)
I am planning a trip with a friend through Ohio as part of a planned travel/memoir book. Our travel date is close enough that I am beginning to panic that I am behind in my research--and so I thought I'd reach out to the Reddit ohioverse.
The backbone of our trip will run along the Old Lincoln Highway. At the heart of our narrative is our vastly opposing views of two supposed post-industrial wastelands: Ohio and Pittsburgh. I moved to Pittsburgh in 1976--when I was six--and idealized the city all out of proportion--but hated Ohio because it wasn't Pittsburgh. My friend Chuck loathes Pittsburgh with the light of 1000 suns.

Our itinerary
Chuck loves Ohio. He finds the landscape serene, and he sees in Ohio the residue of an old-time America of neighbors waving the front porch, hot dog stands with neon signs, WPA murals, and grand old hotels with big marble lobbies that you can walk to from the train station. I know, for example, that he will be photographing every damn Lincoln Highway concrete marker and hot dogs stand we see. This trip may very well be excruciating for me.
That Chuck would rather spend his vacation in Ohio than Punta Cana runs against the prevailing fashions of the day. The same with my frequent contention that gray, crumbling Pittsburgh is one of the most romantic cities in America. I expect that the book focus on love of place--and how that love colors how we see our environment.
I am looking for any information that I can about the towns alongside Route 30, around Fremont/Clyde, and in the vicinity of the Rax roast beef in Lancaster. The more granular and mundane the better! Any interesting facts that get into the nitty gritty of what life is like in this communities. (Last night, for example, I watched Go Tigers!, the old documentary about the cult of football in Massillon, and found everything in it fascinating.)
But I am especially interested hearing from people who have a passionate love (even if ambivalent) about these places. I'd love to hear about the memories, sites, landmarks, and people that make your town unique and better than anywhere else.
I know this is vague, but I have done already done some basic googling and am now trying to go a layer deeper. Many thanks for your help!
See here for more information about this project.
