I had 5 kids standing pressed up against windows watching the rain with hands over their ears during thunder claps. After answering the question multiple ways I turned it back on them. "Why do you think we can't go outside?" Suddenly all those answers I gave them came back at me.

2023.06.02 00:21 dankoagna [TOMT][MOVIE] A movie about a detective who ends up recovering the truth about himself

The main character — a detective — takes a case from an unusual customer (this customer is a mysterious man with long nails…). The detective talks to several witnesses and travels across different locations and sees a bloody trail that he always misses. He’s trying to capture a criminal and thinking that every single murder is on this criminal’s hands. I think that the last witness is criminal’s daughter with whom the detective has an affair, and she ends up being killed as well as every other witness. In the end the detective returns to the customer who is actually the Devil (or perhaps Lucifer) and the detective was the criminal all along (Yes, the MC was having an affair with his relative, you got it correctly).
The movie is pretty old, my best guess it’s from 1980-1990 or somewhere around this time.
Also I remember a character who was killed by drowning in boiling water (or mb some kind of soup) and a strange woman with fancy apartment.

2023.06.02 00:21 Tasty_Housing_6145 Sometimes, my world goes quiet.

I thought everyone experienced the world going quiet. I only learned they didn't a few years ago. Then I realized I was special. I realized no one else was like me. This quiet was a time where everyone stays put as if frozen in time. And then, like a light switch has been flipped, darkness. It doesn't last for long, only for a few minutes. Nothing ever happened to me until today.
I always dreaded going to work. I pulled up to my office and left my car. As I left, I heard the radio playing that "hello darkness" song. I went into the building and greeted the receptionist. "Hi, Linda," I said. She nodded. She continued typing on her computer. I went to the elevator. I pressed the call button and waited. I got into the elevator. I was the only one in there.
It was a long ride to the 23rd floor. The elevator usually had to pick people up on the way and the whole ordeal generally took around 5 minutes. I did what I always did during these 5 minutes: I read the news. I took out my phone and read the headlines. However, before I was even able to start reading, I heard the elevator. Ding I looked up, expecting to see another person get onto the elevator. But no one got on. It was the 23rd floor. I stepped off.
As I went into my office, I received a text from my brother. "Heyy, how's work? I'm gonna stop by Mom and Dad's place. U wanna come? See ya." This was kinda weird. My brother was always very formal in his texts, using proper grammar and punctuation. I shrugged it off. I got another text. "U should really come. We all miss you around here." And another: "Come and see us Michael!" That text felt creepy. But our parents were getting older, so I figured I should pay them a visit.
My work day ended and I got on the elevator. This time it was packed full. I figured I should just wait for he next one to avoid the crowd. As I was waiting, the world went quiet. Everything around me stayed still. The lights turned out. Except this time, it wasn't all quiet. I heard footsteps behind me. I tried to turn my head but I was stuck too. The footsteps drew closer and I heard a voice that sounded eerily similar to my brothers. Actually, I thought it was my brother. Yeah, It was my brother. His voice was just shaky. "We miss you, Michael. Come to see us!" I turned around and saw my brother. But he seemed... different. His hands were fidgeting and he was looking around frantically. I watched him as he collapsed to the ground. Oh my god. .y brother died in front of me.
The lights came back on as I opened my eyes. "Thank God it was all a dream" I whispered. But my intuition told me otherwise. I felt something horribly wrong happening. I got out of bed and searched around my room, trying to figure out what was wrong. I didn't find anything, so I went to make sure my brother was there. I went downstairs and found my brother.
"Did you look under the bed?" He asked, a grin appearing on his face. I went back up and looked under my bed and saw a shadow. I got out my phone flashlight and stared underneath my bed and into my brothers eyes. And on the floor, written in my dead brother's blood, I saw "Come to see us, Michael!"

A Reflection on the RDR2 Video: (Rousseau was a Soy Boy, Burke was a simp for the past, and Dutch is an Enlightened Despot)

https://preview.redd.it/bnf5szdssg3b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=e2fe085c686149b7aab7c019ef426cc15adcd01c
The recent video Red Dead Redemption 2: Was Dutch Right (Sorta)1, by u/DJ_PeachCobbler , was a deconstruction of the flaws of the enlightenment. While watching I was hoping to see something about Rousseau, as all of that french revolution stuff was influenced by him. I was glad to see Cobbler use a direct quote that accurately described Rousseau. I love studying the enlightenment, and I have some reflections to share on the same concepts.
This post will first discuss the involvement of Rousseau in the vid, then the Cobbler's analysis of Dutch as an Enlightened Despot, and then finish with commentary on how Arthur's attitude rejects Dutch's philosophy. The video's commentary on the origins of the enlightenment is great, but it won't be discussed here.
Lets get the master of contradiction, the citizen of Geneva, the degenerate himself, Rousseau out of the way. This guy loved to have relationships with older women, and loved to expose his bare ass to them in public, then lunge backwards at them, hoping they would spank him. The dude ambandoned all his children to die in an orphanage, while being an advocate for proper child care. He called himself a citizen of Geneva, despite being banned from Geneva. He would confess to all this himself in his book "Confessions"2. He did this while living with David Hume. He believed Hume was spying on him, and avoided him at all costs. It turns out the crazy fucker was right, and Hume was spying on him. Cobbler could not be more wrong when he said that his writing was dry and boring. Any book written by a deranged crazy person, who was correct in his paranoia, about the crazy shit he did is entertaining.
Cobbler uses his philosophy correctly in a general sense, but since the title was about Dutch it would have been great to see some of Rousseau's other work. The Social Contract3 would have been great to see in the video. Not just for the first line "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains", but also for Rousseau's "general will", and "legislator". Which lead to justification of every kind of violence, from Robspiere to Stalin. Rousseau would go on to burn part of his manuscript for The Social Contract because he thought it was dangerous, but what he did publish is the same enlightenment bullshit Cobbler discusses in his video. The use of violence for enlightened ideas is perfectly encapsulated in The Social Contract. Rousseau blends the enlightenment ideals of popular sovereignty with authoritarianism.
Rousseau believed that the government should rule for the common good (The General Will). This arbitrary General Will is said to be easily identifiable by Rousseau. But since self interested individuals (like maybe criminals, or industrialists) will not want to push for the common good, then an aristocracy must enforce it. Rousseau goes further to identify the aristocrat, the "Legislator", that must condition the people to be receptive to the general will. In his book about the social contract Rousseau advocates for a "legislator" to enforce a vague "general will" on the people, for their own good. If Dutch read this, he would certainly latch on to it and use it as justification for his own control. This directly supports Cobbler's claim that the corruption of Dutch comes from enlightenment ideas, not just personal greed.
When the gilded age, the founding fathers, and Tacitus are brought up it would have been great to hear more about Rousseau. In many ways the control over the gang Dutch says he is advocating for is found in Rousseau. Dutch's hypocrisy can be seen as Rousseau's hypocrisy. It is almost impossible to enforce enlightened ideals with sheer violence as a powerful leader, without becoming a despot. To be an enlightened despot then really means becoming a leviathan.
Hobbes (a part of the late Scientific Revolution/early Enlightenment [1649]) says in Leviathan4 that life without a violent government is "Solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short". His solution to this is to have a government that strips the people of some of their individual rights, in exchange for order, this deal is not meant as voluntary. This is the original social contract. While people like Dutch claim to be acting in favor of the people's best interest, what they are really doing is enforcing a Hobbesian contract. The members of the gang are forced to participate in Dutch's schemes because he is the leader that secures the group, it is a part of the deal to follow what he says. The reason they follow is because of a belief in the ideals that Dutch will never uphold.
Arthur's opposition to Dutch is described as just doing the right thing, or taking care of folk. Cobbler uses this to oppose the bullshit that people who take Rousseau's Social Contract to heart. However, it goes further than just denying the influences of the french revolution. Instead it is a fundamental disagreement on what the purpose of the gang is. While they are definitely criminals, the gang claims to be for it's members. Dutch sees this as a system that needs a leader to guide it, a la "legislator" from Rousseau, but Arthur sees it differently.
Edmund Burke was a member of the English Parliament in 1789, he published an open letter named Reflections on the Revolution in France5 . In this letter he denounced the enlightenment ideals of the Social Contract. He would say that a country is an agreement between the living and the dead, as well as those who are not yet born. Where as Dutch sees the group as his responsibility, Arthur sees the group as a agreement where the security of the members are most important. Because the gang is not a medium by which ideals can be enforced, but a method for securing the people in the group. It is an agreement between the members of the gang to fight for the group to stay alive that kept it going, when Dutch decided to blow that up in favor of his idealism fueled fever dream the gang truly died. Whether this was in the last chapters of RDR2 or before the game even starts, does not matter. While Arthur would never say what Burke did, his attitude towards Dutch's so called "progress" mirrors Burke's response to the Rousseau fueled french revolution.
If you haven't already, watch u/DJ_PeachCobbler video. I never saw a connection between the enlightenment and RDR2 before watching it, although maybe I should have. Our modern society is defined politically, in part, because of Rousseau and Hobbes. Include Locke and Smith into that for America. This has lead to us adopting the same contradictions of the enlightenment, Red Dead Redemption 2: Was Dutch Right (Sorta) shows that.

2023.06.02 00:18 agreementloop184 Why are people so against sedating their dogs during a groom?

I’m not talking about well behaved dogs, or dogs that are coping with grooming. I’m talking about dogs that… you can barely muzzle… you can barely even approach before they bare teeth and try to attack you… dogs that are frothing at the mouth from how much they’re freaking out, from literally just being brushed or shaved or having their nails clipped, or all of the above.
Usually this is smaller dogs from what I’ve seen.
Apart from potential health reasons, why on earth aren’t these dogs sedated with an oral sedative prior to grooming??
While it does suck to sedate a dog for a grooming procedure every few / several weeks, it sucks even more for a dog to go through that type of immense stress. Am I the only one who thinks it’s cruel to subject a dog to this instead of resorting to medication that could help the dog feel better??
Sedatives with anti anxiety effects, not paralytics.

2023.06.02 00:16 autotldr Japan Goes All In: Copyright Doesn't Apply To AI Training

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 66%. (I'm a bot)
In a surprising move, Japan's government recently reaffirmed that it will not enforce copyrights on data used in AI training.
The policy allows AI to use any data "Regardless of whether it is for non-profit or commercial purposes, whether it is an act other than reproduction, or whether it is content obtained from illegal sites or otherwise." Keiko Nagaoka, Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, confirmed the bold stance to local meeting, saying that Japan's laws won't protect copyrighted materials used in AI datasets.
Japan is also stepping up to help shape the global rules for AI systems within the G-7.
The academic and business sectors are pressing the government to use the nation's relaxed data laws to propel Japan to global AI dominance.
While Japan boasts a long-standing literary tradition, the amount of Japanese language training data is significantly less than the English language resources available in the West.
If the West is going to appropriate Japanese culture for training data, we really shouldn't be surprised if Japan decides to return the favor.

2023.06.02 00:14 Exploding_Muffin (The Wayfinder, Part 3) An Introspection

Note from author: I'm incredibly grateful for the positive attention so far. I didn't mean to create a chronological narrative, but here we are. Forgive the odd continuity error, flying by seat of pants. Fun tho.
First Prev
“Now that both of you had time to clothe and calm down,” Toptor said from behind his desk, “I believe a proper discussion is in order.”
Arms crossed, Owen sat with his head down, hunched on the edge of his seat in the captain’s private office. Colored in greens and browns, the room was immaculate, minimalistic, with a focus on functionality. The nanite chairs were a prime example, designed to instantly change shape to best suit the user. Owen’s chair resembled a bucket seat with a comfortable back. Beside him, Skencie perched on a raised bar, feet hidden beneath his feathers.
“I’ll jump to the point,” Toptor continued. “In a blatant breach of security, a collection of federally provided records were tampered with and presumably destroyed. To our knowledge, these acts occurred after we departed the last space station. The ship has not come into contact with another vessel, meaning the culprit is most likely among us. As of yet, there is no definitive proof on who the culprit is. This is… fortunate for the, assumed, individual as the punishment would involve immediate termination and detainment while the proper federal authorities are informed. The authorities would then prepare to collect the individual at the first opportunity for questioning. If found guilty, they would be charged with felony vandalism, destruction of federal property, and sabotage of electronic systems on a federal research vessel—at least.”
Owen watched the light reflect off his boots. Skencie smoothed a feather on the crook of his wing.
“Fortunately, the files in question can be restored at the next major space station, which we are due to pass soon. Of course, proper procedure requires I provide a reason our records need restoration, and how that reason was determined. The disappearance of the matching hard copies rules out a simple system malfunction.
“Proper procedure dictates an investigation be opened. An investigation did occur, but procedure also stipulates the involvement of the captain to ensure proper documentation, provide discretion, and prevent conflicts of interest or xenophobic assumptions. Instead of bringing the matter to my attention to establish a best course of action, an interrogation was immediately launched where our first officer publicly singled out one of our lowest ranked workers in order to privately berate them while barely dressed in a blanket. Nevermind how the incident concluded.
“I regret to acknowledge that the only procedure actually followed was the (albeit unannounced) recording of the incident, in which our first officer clearly denies the right to a third party witness. A denial only revoked when faced with the requirement to document the refusal. Once all this information is presented to federal authority, the ensuing investigation into The Wayfinder’s ability to securely operate outside of federal jurisdiction would likely result in project termination; including the revocation of various titles, acknowledgments, and privileges for all involved. So.” Toptor’s mandibles clacked together. “Who would like to speak first?”
Skencie fitfully adjusted his posture on his perch. Owen hid a frown behind his hand.
Toptor delicately input several commands on the touchscreen of his desk terminal. “Considering the limited time frame before our scheduled stop to refuel pre-deep space exploration, and the precarious situation thrust onto the entire crew, I’ll provide the privilege of knowing this meeting is ‘off the record’.”
Elbows pressed to his knees, Owen folded his hands together. “Permission to speak freely.”
“I heavily encourage it,” Toptor replied.
Owen’s mouth sourly twisted. “I want to apologize to First Officer Skencie for my outburst in the conference room. And for suggesting he’s a roctel. I’m… ashamed of my recent behavior. I should have acted the way I wish others would and work on interpersonal dynamics instead of focusing on race-based stereotypes. I may have proved everyone right by going too far, from outward aggression to putting myself first. Though I still take issue with a rumor I’d be the first to eat someone in an emergency. All because there are rare instances of cannibalism in terran history doesn’t mean- does cannibalism extend across all xenosentience or is it limited to same-species instances?”
Toptor took a long breath before his hands folded behind his back. “Anything else you’d like to add before the investigation of tampered files is opened to include everyone else on board?”
Owen sighed as his shoulders sagged to the point he risked falling on the floor. “Under the assumption- no,” he interrupted himself, “I confess to altering the human/terran files in order to remove the generalized terran-based information.”
Skencie trilled as his crest raised and quickly lowered. “I am shocked.”
Owen turned his head to cast a narrow side-eye at Skencie. “That said,” he removed his uniform hat and pulled out a cheap data chip from the sweatband, which he placed on Toptor’s desk, “a copy of the original files can be found here. If you use it, there would be no need to request replacement files from the federal database.”
“Secure files can’t just be transfered to any old data chip,” Skencie scoffed.
“Correct,” Owen said, “in the same way account passwords can’t be found stuck to the underside of desks.”
Skencie’s feathers ruffled with an embarrassed trill. “I- what- that would be- no one would be foolish enough to-“
“The hard copies also can’t be found in a safe at the bottom of the contraband locker,” Owen added. “The safe that doesn’t have the key code marked on the back.”
Toptor buzzed in annoyance. He rubbed his hands together before he returned to standing with his arms tucked behind his back. “First Officer Skencie, there seems to have been a break in your rogue investigation. Keeping in mind the, currently uninvolved, federal investigators require lengthy, in-depth, highly documented reports, how do you plan to proceed?”
Owen quietly returned his hat to its proper place.
Skencie resettled his wings against his sides. “I… that is…” He whistled in a way the xenolinguistic translators failed to recognize. “It may… be possible the hard copies were misplaced during an overzealous organization routine, and that… some… corrupted files require… minute repairs. Nothing worth getting worked up over.”
Toptor’s antennae twitched. “A fortuitous realization and discovery. Your attention to detail is as beneficial as always. Unrelated, I think I’ll send a reminder to all accounts that passwords should be changed regularly. Additionally, in light of the last interspecies cohesion assessment, it’s been made apparent that not all personnel feel properly perceived. In response, I would like to present Officer Skencie the prestigious opportunity to spearhead a new social program.
“The procedure would include a collection of autobiographical profiles from each team member, ideally listing personal preferences, aspirations, and recreational activities. Once the information is collected, personnel files will require reformatting to place these profiles above standardized racial and cultural data. It is imperative that all personnel are made aware that these profiles will be made public to the entire team to help establish interpersonal common ground. To prototype this project, I recommend approaching Mr. Deskle , who will provide enthusiasm, sincerity, and constructive criticism to the benefit of the program. Any questions?”
“No, sir,” Owen and Skencie said together.
Toptor hummed in satisfaction. “Excellent work, gentlefolk. I will be eagerly awaiting an update by minor-rotation end. Dismissed.”

2023.06.02 00:13 RipCityyyyyy Screenshot command not working

Screenshot command not working
I have a 2017 MBP and a 2020 M1 Mini and one of the screenshot functions doesn’t appear to work on the Mini. Cmd+Shift+4 turns the cursor into a crosshair for you to make a screenshot selection and pressing the spacebar from there should allow me to select an entire window to screenshot. It works on the MBP (Ventura 13.3.1/most recent), and on my old iMac, but not on the Mini (13.4/most recent).
Even doing Cmd+Shift+5 on the Mini, pressing the spacebar, and selecting Capture Selected Window in the options window that pops up doesn’t work.
The function worked just fine on my old 2015 iMac too. I have ASUS monitors for the Mini but I can’t imagine that being the issue. Right…?
Any ideas?

2023.06.02 00:11 pls-send-kitties She’s lost her son now.

My mil has always had issues. From the beginning, it was claiming she’s sick all the time and begging us for money. Then once she came to this country, it was refusing to help out with anything while she lived with us completely for free. She talked her son into selling her a car for $500, but fought tooth and nail anytime we asked for any sort of payment. Would borrow money from me and then avoid me so I couldn’t ask about when she could pay me back. Screamed at me while her son was literally attempting suicide by police(thankfully the officer knew us and recognized my husbands mental state and didn’t press charges). Then went around telling her entire family how horrible a person I am for getting her son the help he needed. Recently she sold the car she was sold, but needed a car and decided to beg/pressure my husband to sell her his project car. He decided that yes, he would. Even though he loves that car and didn’t want to, but they need a vehicle. Then she turns around and says she’s going to sell it for 3000. She hasn’t even paid us for the car and already planning to sell it. So when my husband confronted her saying that if she doesn’t want the car then she should just not get it. But then she gets mad and says he can keep the car but he has to pay her 1300 for it for some reason. I have told my husband for years that his family is nice but not when it comes to anything material or money and he always said that hr helped them because they are his family and he wants to keep the peace. After all of this fighting he has finally told them to keep the car and do what they want but to not call him for help anymore. He’s said he is done and can’t take it anymore. When we needed help they turned they’re back while he always did what he could for them. His final decision was to just give up and it breaks my heart for him but he knows I and my entire family support him and love him.

2023.06.02 00:09 4_Privacy Issue with Installation

On my Thinkpad I have Mint and Tiny 11 dual booted each on their own separate SSDs. I can select either in grub and it'll work no problem.
I'm trying to put Ubuntu on an external SSD via a live boot thumb drive but whenever I go into my boot menu (F12) and select my thumb drive the screen flashes and quickly just shows the boot menu again with the top item selected as if I just pressed F12. My system refuses to boot into my live USB. Does anyone know what's going on?

2023.06.02 00:07 Grand-Expression-493 Gabapentin usage

In what situations would a doctor prescribe gabapentin? Friend of mine has a numbing issue on his toe, and family physician ordered MRI which said very minor disc bulge which is pressing on the nerve.
Family physician prescribed 100mg gabapentin, but the person is concerned after they read what it is - anti seizure medicine.
Does it recover nerves? Or is it just a non addictive alternative to opiates?

2023.06.02 00:07 jonbcalderon Is there a place online you can purchase the letters and numbers for baseball jerseys that you can heat press on yourself?

The heat pressed numbers with a fake zigzag stitching on them.

2023.06.02 00:06 aspiretorequire Correctly trimming black nails?

Hi all, my 20 lbs mutt has very strong, very dark toe nails and I can't get enough details from Google about the best way to trim black nails!
Every tip or advice I find online says to stop trimming when you hit the white colored quick, but I trim her nails the teenest fraction and I see tons of white underneath. Her nails are black on top and a lighter, almost white at times, grey color runs underside of the claws. I can't figure out how much I should trim back each time!
She senses my hesitation and dislikes nail trims, so they've definitely gotten overgrown for a few months and the quick needs to die back (I guess from what I read online?). Daily walks on concrete aren't enough to keep them ground back so she isn't walking on her nails and I gotta stop avoiding this issue while it's a minor one! Any help is welcome!

2023.06.02 00:06 EverydayQuestions- How to factory reset/reinstall macOS on iMac G3 and eMac (Mac OS X Panther)

Years ago I acquired these two devices (Apple eMac A1002 and Apple iMac G3 M5521) for next-to-nothing at an estate sale and am looking to finally offload them on eBay.
Both are running Mac OS X 10.3.9. Both seem to have broken CD drives (one has a CD stuck inside which it reads but is unable to eject, the other does not seem to read/work at all).
On either PC, I have been unable to boot into any sort of recovery mode, disk utility, or boot manager. I have tried ‘C’, ‘D’, ‘cmd’, ‘cmd’ + ‘R’ and any other possible combination I could find, each many times in many different ways (pressing the keys at different times during startup, holding the key(s) and/or continuously mashing them, etc.) to no avail. I have been able to boot into single-user mode which allowed me to create new admin users as I didn’t have the passwords for the computer’s original accounts.
I have found numerous versions of Mac OS X Panther & Tiger, primarily on archive.org (and all supposedly compatible with PowerPC) which I have tried to boot into as .iso and .dmg from a flash drive and from burned CDs (running on an external CD drive).
Every time, I am able to view/access/run the Install Mac OS X programs while the computer is logged in. I can run them, click to install Mac OS X, and click the restart button when prompted by the installation process. But both computers only reboot back into Mac OS as the default users without running any installation. And as mentioned above, I have been unable to reach any boot menu that would allow me to erase the HDD or boot from USB/CD.
Any help would be immensely appreciated!!

2023.06.02 00:05 Trxgedi-_- Firework suggestions?

From CA, and plan to head to Red Apple and Outlaw in Pahrump, NV to pickup some fireworks this year on wholesale. Last year ended up taking a trip to NM and spent about $1300 on individual fireworks (I know what you are going to say LOL). Taking it more serious this year, and was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on which fireworks to pickup from either location or suggest a new location.
I've done research on both stores, and already have a list made, just wanting to hear or see if I am missing anything that I should get/replace.
