On reporting a therapist (US)

2023.05.30 22:46 norashepard On reporting a therapist (US)

There are a lot of posts about reporting therapists here. There’s a FAQ that outlines the logistical process, but I thought I’d talk a bit about emotional risk, justice, and closure for the specific group of folks reporting therapists who traumatized them. I hope this is helpful for some. Sorry in advance if it upsets anyone. Please be kind. I’m not a therapist fyi, just in the (long) middle of the process.
  1. Remember that the license is a legal agreement with the state, not a professional organization. Accordingly, this is a legal process that could potentially end in a formal disciplinary hearing between your therapist and the state (not you). As in any legal matter, the burden of proof is on you, so you want to gather as much tangible evidence as you can. You may want to give up because you don’t have direct correspondence with the therapist or (one-party state) recordings, but evidence might also include journals, texting or chatting with others about it, social media, or other dated material. Searching through old chats and rereading exchanges, taking screenshots, etc. can be destabilizing (at least it was for me). Depending on the state and/or the violation, you may also need to prepare for a phone call with the lead investigator, which can of course be stressful, and even retraumatizing. You should have plans in place for support. Having my own therapist at this moment was essential.
  2. You need to write a statement that explains what happened. As the FAQ says, it’s good to explain exactly which codes your therapist violated. Some people are better writers than others. While someone can’t write the statement for you, someone you trust can maybe help you with phrasing and grammar, and also help you see where information may be missing. Understandably this may be hard to do because it requires you to share, but if you feel comfortable sharing with someone, I would recommend it.
  3. Despite the fact that this is a legal matter, this is not at all like a lawsuit on your end. All you do is write a statement, include evidence, submit the report, maybe talk to an investigator. That should be it. No defense attorney is there to make you look crazy. You won’t need to see your therapist, though they’ll have read your complaint. After speaking to the investigator (if your case warrants it), that’s likely the end of the process for you.
  4. The disciplinary action may not match the pain you experienced. I see a lot of people telling various OPs to report their therapist because they deserve to “lose their license.” Most of the discipline is rehabilitation. The majority of penalties within recent years in my state are $200-1000 and continuing education, sometimes with a reprimand, audit (ethics), probation, or suspension. For example, one case with multiple ethical conduct violations with clients mandates continuing credits, no fine. One unethical conduct case is simply a reprimand. Another unethical conduct case mandates a few years probation and a course. One disciplined for abandonment had their license suspended for five days. Neglected clients, one year probation. You get the idea. Most unethical conduct penalties allow therapists to continue to practice without interruption. Revocations or surrenders of licenses for unethical conduct with clients were almost exclusively for sexual misconduct. You could check your state records to see how yours handles things (some reports are hard to find or unavailable). All this said, all disciplinary action is public—available for both colleagues and clients to see—and can affect further employment and malpractice insurance. I also imagine reports from multiple clients accumulate. Just don't expect them to lose their license. Ask yourself if a lenient penalty is better than nothing. If my therapist wouldn’t have lost his license, I would have been devastated to the point of severe SUI. Arkansas has an unusually detailed list of actions if you want some idea. For some states you can read the Consent Orders.
  5. As the FAQ says, be prepared to wait. There may be a quick turnaround, but unfortunately more likely it will take many months, even more than a year, depending on the efficiency of your state board and/or the amount of cases they’re investigating. The wait time could even be longer than the statute of limitations period for a malpractice lawsuit in your state (unfortunate because the report is very useful in a lawsuit). My state’s statute of limitations is 2 years and it’s been 1.5 years since reporting. I still haven’t received closure on my investigation. I spoke to the investigator over a year ago and never heard anything again. Since then the case has changed investigators and my therapist has retired. I’m trying to forget it, since he isn’t practicing, but if he were still practicing I’d probably be losing my absolute shit. Consider if you’re the type to obsess. Will you check every month? Every week? Every day? Is the complaint going to interfere with your own healing for as long as it takes to resolve? And is the complaint worth that? It unequivocally may be, but best to check in with yourself.
  6. For your sanity, it’s important to stay realistic about the guidelines under which the board is working, and the limitations of the system. Some violations are obviously easier to prove than others. The grey area is not actionable. For example, emotional abuse is one of the most damaging experiences one can have in life, but also complex and hard to undeniably prove (“were you just misreading or misinterpreting?”). On the flip, something that hurt you very much may not be unethical, at least not under the ethics code. The violations in your case need clear definition. Some members of the board may even be more sympathetic to you than your therapist, but they still need to be careful in adjudicating because, again, this is a legal process with major ramifications for the therapist. How will you stay stable and safe if your very valid complaint is rejected because it didn’t fit neatly into the box?
  7. Because you’re reporting a traumatic experience, it’s really best to work with a therapist if you’re ready and able. A therapist can ask you questions, and you can ask them questions, within an actual conversation. They can help you figure out if a report is warranted, then help you process and understand your goals, if you even want to file, and then consider if it might be potentially harmful enough for you to postpone the report. And, if you do file, they can help with the preparation as appropriate, and to keep you stable during it. I can’t emphasize enough how important my therapist has been in my pursuit of justice and closure. I truly think she saved my life.
I’m sure others here have been through the process and can share their own experiences. Just thoughts from my limited experience of the process.

2023.05.30 22:45 throwRADazer My bf (M 21) is talking to his ‘girl best friend’ (F 21) a lot more and it is worrying me.

A bit of back story. Me (f 22) and my bf (m 21) have been together for over ten months and have had only little arguments along the way. He always had a girl best friend, let’s call her taylor (f 21) who has been there the whole time and has always been there for him, they had a bit of a falling out and the girl best friends bf made her cut contact with my boyfriend. Skip maybe 2 weeks and suddenly this new girl bestfriend (f 21) has shown up, she’s never been mentioned before but when originally mentioned he said he had met her online (a dating app) and they had never met in person.
Around 2 weeks later he mentioned might meet up with her to go on a walk like they used to, this flagged up to me as originally he said they had never met but apparently they had a few times before and nothing ever happened. Of course this turned into a conversation onto where I stated my perspective, I understand having best friends and meeting with people but I felt that this relationship formed more on a attraction basis, I was saying I trust him but feel if it was me in the situation and it was flipped I would never do that. Since then it was never mentioned and of my knowledge never happened, this was around 2 months ago and I noticed their convocation fizzled out.
Fast forward to a couple days ago on his phone popped up a message and as we have access to each other’s phones I never thought that anything would have come up to it, to my surprise they have been talking non stop for the past few weeks with a few messages being highlighted as ‘do you want to have some fun’ and a lot of compliments on her snap stories. I broke down immediately and spoke to him about this, apparently this was him flirting as a joke to her boyfriend, but obviously with those being the only messaged saved I immediately jumped to a conclusion. What do I do now? I’m trying to trust but I have this gut feeling that I’m going to get hurt as I’ve had this happen to me in the past with the ‘girl best friend’. I’m not sure how to set my boundaries anymore as I feel like if it was to her it’s emotionally cheating. HELP

2023.05.30 22:40 Bsizzle1024 Experience Online shopping or in store shopping for engagement ring?

Essentially I have a general idea what type of ring my girl friend would enjoy. With hours of research i have a ROUGH basic understanding on the 4 c’s of diamonds. With that I had in the past been so set on going through a site like blue Nile as they look to have some affordable rings. However..I’ve been seeing some horror stories that their rings aren’t “up to standard” as ones you may find at the store, which would make sense to me why they’re generally cheaper.
Unlike most of my friends/family members that had gone through the process of finding a ring, I am extremely thorough (probably a little too thorough) when it comes to making big purchases like this lol. So the idea of buying a ring online and not seeing it until it comes is a little stressful. But then on the flip side, it seems in store rings are much much more expensive than one online.
So I am interested in those who elected in buying online or in store, what was your experience like?

2023.05.30 22:39 Slight-Anteater-8390 One Year, One Week old Model 3

https://instagram.com/p/Cs4YM80SDRt/
1 year. 1 week. Owned Blastoise for 53 weeks and man… what an awesome experience. Took this car everywhere from Los Angeles (a couple of times), to Portland (countless times), to San Francisco, to Vancouver, BC, to Cascade mountains, to Ocean Shores, to Long Beach and daily driving, totaling 35,329 miles driven.
Was skeptical about electric vehicles, especially battery degeneration but so far, it seems like the battery is still very healthy.
How do I know it’s very healthy? With a small sample from today’s driving, drove 183 miles and the car consumed 38 kWh. With an efficiency of 207 Watt hour (Wh) per mile. Averaging 60 mph and outside temp about 70 F. Blastoise has a 75 kWh battery pack. Math breakdown: With an efficiency of 207 Wh/mi. 1 kWh = 4.831 miles. 75 kWh x 4.831 = 362 miles. On a good day, this car can still travel over 350 miles in one full charge. Now that’s amazing!
In larger sample size. Blastoise traveled 35,329 miles, averaging 239 watt hour per mile and consumed a total of 8,430 kWh. After driving all four season in various weather conditions and driving conditions, in one full charge, Blastoise can go about 313 miles. 45 miles less then an EPA range of 358 miles. Approximately 87% battery life remain. But that number is arbitrary. I expect during warmer months the efficiency will be better and the battery degradation will improve. All in all, this 2022 Tesla Model 3 is absolutely amazing!
Let’s talk about money saved compared to gas. My previous car was a 2010 Honda Civic.
In the past year, IF I drove the Civic 35,000 miles, it would have consumed 1,000 gallons of gasoline. I would have paid roughly $4,300 in gas. *(Civic mpg is about 35mpg, average gas price for the past year I’d say is ROUGHLY $4.30/gal)
Past year, I drove Blastoise about 35,329 miles consumed 8,430 kWh and it would have costed $917 in electricity IF I charged at home the whole time but I didn’t. Did some super charging on road trips, so I estimated $1,100 in total electricity cost counting both at home charging and super charging. *(Blastoise efficiency is 239 Wh, with an average electricity rate of .11 cents and super charging )
Saving me roughly $3,200. Also did no maintenance except adding windshield fluid and occasionally add air to the tires, which is free at Costco, and tire rotations, which is also free at discount tires. All in all savings of over $3,500!!!

2023.05.30 22:37 chuckhustmyre [TH] MIRROR IMAGE by Chuck Hustmyre

Sometimes when you look into the mirror, the mirror looks back.
William Bailey's forehead shattered the mirror like a sledgehammer. The last thing he remembered before he blacked out was the feeling that he was falling through the mirror. Sub-cranial hematoma, a concussion, maybe even a cracked skull--that had to be the reason for the strange feeling. The mirror was mounted on the wall just to the right of the bar, four feet tall by about three feet wide. As consciousness slipped away, common sense and his strong belief in the rational world told him that he couldn't fall through the mirror. He must have bounced his head off the wall and be falling toward the floor.
It seemed like just a second or two before William's eyes popped open. He lay on his back, on the hard wood floor of Fausto's, with Johnny Davis towering over him. Big Johnny probably wanted to finish him off, maybe kill him, and finally end their twenty-year-old feud. Either Big Johnny Davis and the ceiling lights above him were spinning, or William's head was spinning, but either way something wasn't right.
He raised his head and looked to his left, toward the bar. Except the bar wasn't there. Instead, he was staring at the bathrooms. That didn't make sense. It must be his brain that had gotten spun around. William turned his head and peered over his size-ten wingtips at the busted mirror. The wooden frame and most of the glass still clung to the wall, the rest sat broken on the ground. The bar had to be on his left. He looked again, and still saw the bathrooms. A brain bruise, maybe some fluid pressure building up might be the cause of it.
"Get up!" Big Johnny Davis said.
William looked up at him. Johnny stood behind him, just beyond his shoulders. Perfect place for him to stomp my head into the plank floor. Except Johnny Davis was holding out his hand.
"Come on, we've got to get out of here."
Davis looked scared. It was the first time William Bailey could ever remember Johnny Davis looking scared. William had always been scared of Big Johnny, but Big Johnny wasn't scared of anything or anyone.
Police sirens wailed in the distance.
Johnny glanced over his shoulder. William craned his neck to look where Johnny was looking, saw he was staring at the front door like a man terrified something bad was going to come through it. Big Johnny looked down at him again and pumped his hand. "Come on, get up. They'll be here any second."
"Who?" William asked. "Who'll be--" But before he finished, Big Johnny Davis reached down, grabbed him by both arms, and jerked him to his feet.
As he was dragged toward the door by the only man in town who truly hated him, William glanced up and saw the rusted metal sign nailed above the door. He had to have a concussion, probably severe; that had to be it, because the letters on the sign were backward. It said TUO.
As Johnny Davis pulled him out the door, William heard tires skid on the pavement.
"Where's your car?" Johnny asked.
William twisted away from the big man's grip, then turned to his left. "In the alley." He started to run, still not sure exactly what he was running from.
Behind him, Big John shouted, "The alley's over here."
William kept running but turned his head back toward Johnny. "I know where the alley--"
Something hit him across the midsection and toppled him to the ground. He got his hands up just in time to break his fall and managed to keep his head from slamming into the sidewalk. When he looked up he saw a shopping cart tumbled onto its side.
Once again, William found himself lying flat on his back, this time amid the spilled contents of the cart. It had been filled with junk: paper bags full of dirty clothes, canned food, bags of potato chips, a diamond shaped, orange road sign, and other trash that looked like it had been collected from back alley garbage bins.
The homeless man who'd been pushing the cart was scrawny, and wafer thin. His skin was the color of old shoe leather, and he wore a long gray beard, tangled and matted with food and bits of filth. He was sprawled on the ground next to his cart, half sitting up, staring at William with his bright blue eyes.
Car doors slammed, men shouted.
"You better get going," the homeless man said, as he cocked his head. "The police after you?"
Police!
Before William could assure the old man that the police weren't after him--he was a respected businessman and family man--someone behind him grabbed him under both arms and pulled him to his feet. William turned and found himself staring into the face of Johnny Davis. "The alley's that way," Johnny said, pointing to the other side of Fausto's. With one hand gripping William's jacket, Johnny dashed across the front of the bar toward the alley. The alley--right there, plain as day--on the other side of Fausto's, right where it shouldn't be, where it couldn't be. William had been here a thousand times. As you stepped out of the bar, the alley was on the left, Brockton's Ace Hardware on the right. Now everything was mixed up and in the wrong place.
Johnny Davis turned down the alley, dragging William behind him. After just a few steps, a spotlight flashed in front of them.
"Stop!" a voice commanded. "Get on the ground."
William couldn't see because Johnny was in his way. "Who's that yelling?" he asked.
Big Johnny stopped and William plowed into his back.
"Get on the ground," the voice boomed again.
William poked his head out from behind Johnny Davis's back. The blinding white light was in his face. He couldn't see a thing.
POP! POP! POP!
Gunshots.
Big Johnny sagged, then crashed to his knees. Instinctively, William bent forward and grabbed hold of Johnny. "What's the matter?"
More pops.
Johnny's big hand reached out and shoved William back toward the street. "Back door," he wheezed, then plunged forward onto his face.
William stood alone. Behind the white spotlight he saw blue police lights flashing. He was totally exposed.
POP! POP!
He saw flashes--little yellow spurts of flame--as something tugged at his jacket.
William had said "back door." What back door? Fausto's had a back door, but it didn't lead anywhere except to the open space behind the building used for trash and deliveries. Twenty feet of asphalt between the bar and the back of the building on the next block. William had parked his car at the end of the alley, but the police cars--or whatever they were--had the alley blocked off. The building behind Fausto's also had an alley that ran alongside it, but the owner had closed it off to keep the bums out. He'd put up a gate, padlocked it, and topped it with razor wire. It was a dead end.
Two more pops. Dead end or not it was better than standing here and getting shot. William turned and ran. He burst through the front door of Fausto's, dashed through the bar, past the shattered mirror, hit the back door at a dead run, and was outside behind the bar within seconds.
He could see the tail end of his car sticking out from the corner of the building, but with the cops blocking the alley, his car was useless to him. William glanced across the open space to the alley that ran next to the other building. The gate, the padlock, the razor wire--all still in place. To his right an overflowing garbage dumpster sat beside the back of Fausto's, jammed against the fire ladder.
The fire ladder.
An iron ladder bolted to the cinderblock wall.
William looked up. The top of the ladder was lost in shadow, but he knew it went up two stories to the roof. Last summer, when the toilet had stopped up, he'd come out back to take a leak and had stood behind the dumpster, peeing against the wall like a kid, one hand draped over the bottom rung of the ladder.
He slipped behind the dumpster. The smell made him gag. The bottom of the ladder was four feet from the ground. William reached up as high as he could, grabbed hold of the third rung, then hauled himself up.
Through the partially open back door came the sounds of heavy feet pounding on the hard wood floor of the bar.
Halfway up the ladder, he was exhausted--and scared. Shaking, he white-knuckled the ladder. Being more than ten feet off the ground terrified him. He needed a break, just a second or two to catch his breath. There was enough moonlight so he could see into one of the second story windows. Inside, junk was piled everywhere. Old barstools, a busted jukebox, furniture stacked almost to the ceiling. Years ago, old man Fausto lived on the second floor, but Jake, who'd bought the place from the old man and had decided to keep the name, used it for storage.
Below him, William heard the back door thrown open so hard it banged against the wall. He scrambled up until he reached the top of the ladder, then hoisted himself over the edge of the roof. Down on the ground a voice shouted, "There he is, up there."
Another gunshot. What the hell was going on?
The unmistakable sound of feet--fast feet, in shape feet, boot shod feet--scurrying up the ladder. Standing on the tar and pebble roof, William glanced around for something he could use as a weapon, shocked he was even thinking of such a thing. A five gallon plastic bucket was all there was. It stood upright, filled with rainwater. He picked it up and peered over the edge. A uniformed policeman was three quarters of the way up the ladder. Two more cops were right behind him.
William looked at the heavy bucket in his hands, thought about just dumping the water onto them but knew it wouldn't stop them. There was only one way to stop them, and that was to knock them off the ladder. He thought about warning them, maybe trying to scare them away. But they were cops. You couldn't scare them away.
So why had they shot Johnny Davis, and why were they shooting at him?
The first officer looked up and saw William staring down at him with the bucket in his hands. Their eyes locked for just a second and the cop stopped. In those eyes that stared back at him, William saw an almost maniacal determination that sent a shiver down his spine. The officer held his grip on the ladder with his right hand while his left dropped to the pistol resting in his gleaming leather holster. In one smooth motion he drew his gun and raised it toward William.
William Bailey tossed the bucket down the ladder. A shot rang out an instant before the heavy bucket thudded into the cop's head. Like a gruesome traffic accident happening before his eyes, William couldn't help but watch as the policeman fell, taking his two partners down with him. The last thing William saw before he turned away was a jumbled heap of black uniforms resting on the concrete below the ladder.
* * *
Hiding in the shadow of a telephone booth, thinking. Home. He had to get home. Had to get back to Marge and the kids. Maybe somehow he could explain what had happened. Vincent, his attorney, he would know what to do--maybe--but he was a civil lawyer not a criminal attorney. He wrote contracts and did personal injury on the side; he didn't get people out of jail who'd killed a cop by dropping a bucket of water on his head and knocking him and his buddies off the side of a building.
As the cab he'd been waiting for pulled up, William stepped out from the dark and climbed into the back seat.
The driver turned around. "Where to?"
William pulled the door shut. "Uptown. 1721 Audubon Court."
"Fare's gonna be about fifteen dollars. After dark, I gotta have the money up front."
"What?"
"Company policy." The cabbie shrugged. "A lot of drivers been getting stiffed."
William opened his wallet, pulled out a twenty and handed it across the seat. The driver took it and almost slipped it into his cash box, then took a second look at the bill. His face tightened. "What the hell is this?"
"Huh?"
With the bill stretched between his hands, the cabbie stared at it for a second then looked up at William. "You're either the dumbest counterfeiter who ever lived or you've been had."
"What you are talking about?"
The driver faced the bill toward William but didn't hand it back to him. "It's printed backwards."
William looked at the twenty-dollar bill in the man's hand. It looked like--it was--an almost brand new bill, nothing wrong with it as far as he could tell.
"Get out of my cab," the driver said.
William didn't know what the man was talking about but knew he didn't want to get out. This cab was his only way home. He reached for the twenty. "If you don't like that one I've got another--"
The driver pulled his hands away. "I ain't giving this back. I got to turn it in to the police." He dropped one hand behind his seat back, then came up clutching a pistol, an old German Luger by the looks of it, the muzzle aimed straight at William's face. "In fact, I bet they give me a reward if I bring you in with it."
William jerked the door handle and rolled out into the street. He sprang to his feet and ran, the driver's yells just background noise. Has everyone gone crazy or is it just me?
Home. He had to get home.
* * *
Rain. Driving, relentless rain. William was just two blocks from Fausto's. In two hours, that's as far as he'd gotten--one block an hour. Police cars prowled the neighborhood, shinning spotlights into every nook and cranny, lighting up every shadow. Everyone in Fausto's knew his name. He'd been going there three or four nights a week after work for years. The cabbie had his address. William had given it to him when he told the hack driver where to drop him.
Ten o'clock at night, with nowhere to go and no way to get there, William sat behind the closed Goodwill store, under an overhang that barely kept the rain off of him.
Huddled in the dark, head sunk between his knees, he hadn't heard anyone approach.
"You don't look so good."
Startled, William looked up, prepared to run again. It was the homeless man he'd knocked over outside the bar. The one with the shopping cart and the leathery skin. William relaxed a little. "Excuse me?"
The man pushed his cart closer. "You're not supposed to be here."
William looked around. "Why not?"
The old man grinned, half his teeth gone.
William found it nearly impossible to tell his age. The guy could be forty and maybe had lived a hard life, or perhaps he was a well-preserved seventy, pickled by a lifetime of booze. William waved him off, expecting a plea for money. "I can't help you."
The old man stopped just a few feet away. "Everything's out of place isn't it?" He had a strange lilting voice. Almost like an accent.
And he was right. Everything was out of place--from Johnny Davis to the cab driver--everything was wrong.
Strapped to the back of the old man's shopping cart was a plastic sign about the size of a loaf of bread. William recognized the sign, the words, the colors, the logo of a local supermarket chain, all were familiar to him, but the letters were backward, unreadable.
Rainwater ran down William's face. He pointed to the sign. "Why's it written like that?"
The old man looked at the sign then back at William. "Like what?" he said, then shuffled away behind his basket.
* * *
The rain came down even harder. William slouched in a darkened doorway across the street from Fausto's. Nothing made sense. Everything was messed up, backward, out of whack. Almost like this wasn't his home, like he was a stranger seeing it for the first time.
But that was crazy. He'd grown up here, gone to Brother Martin High School, dated Jenny Underhill who went to Cabrini, lost her to Johnny Davis, then got her back only to lose her again the first year of college to some kid who drove a Mustang. Two years later William married Marge at Saint Luke's. They had two kids.
This town was his home. He recognized it. He knew the people here, Big Johnny and Zeke, the bartender at Fausto's. But things were different, little things. John Davis for one. In trying to help him, the big man had gotten himself killed. That wasn't John Davis--at least not the one William Bailey had known since seventh grade. Everything looked the same but wasn't. Nothing was quite right.
But they knew him--or someone like him.
A strange sensation crept over him that made the hair on the back of his neck rise. Maybe he didn't belong here. Maybe everything wasn't as it appeared. Maybe this wasn't his home. But if that were true, then whose home was it? Another thought, even scarier seeped through his brain. If he was here, who was there--at his home?
Crazy.
William dropped his head into his hands. Just considering such nonsense was a waste of time. Yet, here he was scanning the street, thinking of going back inside Fausto's, back to that mirror.
Not much time to think about it. The bar closed at three AM and it was already two-thirty. When he'd left--run for his life with Big Johnny--most of the mirror was still in the frame hanging on the wall.
Something about that damned mirror.
But Fausto's was dangerous, so a couple of hours ago William had found another mirror. In the men's room of a twenty-four hour gas station. The Chevron on North Rampart.
He had approached it cautiously, afraid he was going mad. As he peered over the sink into the mirror, he saw what he always saw, his own reflection. Holding up his left hand, he looked at the image in the mirror, at the watch strapped to his wrist. He noticed that the man in the mirror wore his watch on his right hand. Just the opposite.
William stood in the gas station bathroom for twenty minutes before he worked up his nerve. Finally, he took a deep breath, leaned back, then slammed his forehead into the dirt-streaked mirror. The glass shattered and cut his head. Blood dribbled off the tip of his nose into the sink. His reflection stared out at him from the other side of the mirror, blood running down his face, too.
I have gone crazy!
So the gas station hadn't worked out. Ducking police cruisers, William had wandered the streets, his head reeling. What was he doing?
On the sidewalk, he found a sopping wet magazine that the wind had blown up against the side of a newspaper machine. The cover caught his eye. He picked it up. It was printed backwards, the letters reversed, words running right to left. The spine was on the right. As he flipped through the pages, he couldn't read a thing. Then William had an idea.
In the bathroom of an all night restaurant he held the wet magazine up to the mirror. Perfect. The reflected image was normal, spine on the left, words running left to right, all the letters printed correctly. He could read it clearly. But what did it mean?
Then he drove his head into that mirror. The glass cracked. Someone walked in, a skinny waiter wearing an apron. He stood gawking as William leaned over the sink with tears of pain filling his eyes.
The waiter looked at the broken mirror, then jabbed a finger at William's bloody forehead. "What the hell are you doing?"
"An accident," he mumbled, pressing his fingers against the fresh cut.
The waiter turned. "I'm calling the cops."
William Bailey ran.
Now he was huddled in the rain staring at Fausto's across the street. Because he had nowhere else to go.
He stood and walked toward Fausto's. When he was halfway across the street, a police car glided around the corner, headlights reflecting off the wet pavement. The cops in no hurry, just cruising. William forced himself to keep walking, not to run. One foot in front of the other. In the downpour, odds were that the cops wouldn't even recognize him.
But they did recognize him.
The police car slid to a stop as its high beams clicked on and its blue strobe lights started popping. Both front doors flew open.
Like a sinner seeking the sanctuary of a church, William ran straight for Fausto's door. As he burst inside, Zeke looked up from behind the bar. "William! What the hell are you doing here?"
He ignored the bartender, running right past him, eyes focused on the broken mirror and its busted frame hanging on the wall.
Zeke again, "The cops been looking all over for you. Say you killed two officers and--"
Behind him the front door banged against the wall. "Police!" a voice behind him commanded. "Stop."
But William didn't stop. He kept running--running straight for the mirror. Reflected in its fragmented pieces he saw two uniformed police officers behind him, heard their boots pounding on the wooden floor. Just ten feet separated him from the mirror. At full speed he took two strides then dove. He stretched his arms out overhead and tucked his chin into his chest as his feet left the floor.
He felt one hand hit wall and the other strike broken glass. Then his head hit. More glass cracked, more skin split.
Darkness.
* * *
William's eyes popped open. He was staring at the ceiling. Rough voices, even rougher hands. They rolled him over onto his stomach and jerked his arms behind his back. He felt cold steel on his wrists and heard the metallic ratcheting as the handcuffs tightened and bit into his skin.
He tilted his head up and rested his chin against the floor. Blood poured down the side of his face; he watched it pool on the floor then seep between the wooden planks. By rolling his eyes up he could just see the empty spot on the wall where the mirror had hung. Lying on the floor, three feet from his head, was the broken frame and the rest of the glass.
The two cops grabbed his arms and yanked him to his feet, sending waves of pain through his shoulders and wrists. As they spun him toward the door, one of the officers said, "You're under arrest."
"Why?" William asked.
The officer pressed his face into William's. "Murdering your family for starters."
"My...my family." William felt his stomach cinch and his bowels turn to ice. A thought he'd had earlier in the night echoed inside his head. If he was here, who was there--at his home.
As the cops dragged him across the floor, William glanced up and saw the rusted metal sign nailed above the door.
OUT.
He was home.

2023.05.30 22:20 PiezoelectricityOne Help me redefine my setup

Hi, dawless fans! I got hit by GAS with the Behringer 2600 and the new edge, but I have too much gear and too little money and storage, so before buying anything else I must sell something from my stash. I'm trying to wrap my head around what to keep and what to flip, I want my setup to be more modular, and focused on timbrical exploration and experimentation, mostly for playing in my living room but I still want to be able to make tracks/live performances. I don't have a favorite genre, other than I like abstract/psychedelic stuff from gritty techno to chill ambient and anything in between.
This is what I have: Tradeable: Behringer Neutron, Crave, Wasp. Korg Electribe 2, kp3+. Arturia minibrute, drumbrute. Novation Circuit Mono Station.
Not for trade: 8 channel mixer, 4in 4out router mixer, zoom r-8 recorder, bulky old midi kb (I barely use it), sporadic diy midi and CV devices I build and program myself (CV to CC converters, exotic controllers, sequencers, analog Mod sources).
The way it goes now, most sounds are routed to neutron and wasp "front of the house", which act as VCF/vca modelling stage, kaoss pad on Fx send/return. Electribe acting like a midi brain but letting the other sequencers do their stuff. Mono Station holds melodic tracks or acts as a lead controller, while crave and minibrute will play ostinatos/rythm stuff and drumbrute keeps a foundation beat/spice up the fills and buildups,
If I got either a 2600, an edge or both, it'll help me expand modular concepts and sounds that I want. Which of my current instruments you think will play better with them? Which won't fit? What's your opinion?

2023.05.30 22:19 honeyfairy7 Season 5 was bad

Sorry in advance for how negative this is
Season 3 and 4 were amazing and I was expecting season 5 to be at least season 4 level. Am I the only one who saw a severe drop in quality? The characters are not really acting like themselves. Dean used to be a really funny guy and Sam was funny when he was playing off Dean. But a lot of the time they would just have normal conversations and that really added to the emotional impact. In other seasons dean’s humor was used as a way for his character to cope with uncomfortable moments and it felt more intentional. But this season I feel like everyone had maxxed out Dean humor which served no purpose at all and it was over the top even for Dean to be making pop culture references every other sentence. It just kind of devolved into normal witty TV writing.
Sam and Dean never really had a serious conversation that didn’t feel repetitive and shallow compared to previous seasons. Last season they were really vulnerable and impactful characters. But instead of continuing their arcs and showing any growth they kind of just get the same arcs from season 4. It gets really repetitive, with Dean constantly getting picked on for hating himself and Sam being told how evil he is all the time. Imo Sam should’ve probably gotten more evil this season, but the fact that he’s even nicer than in season 4 makes his whole evil Lucifer destiny fall flat. Side characters like Cass and Bobby are pretty hollow also. Bobby is an unlikable stubborn grouch and Cass becomes a quirky side character who exists to be the butt of jokes.
The whole crew of Sam, Dean, Bobby and cass are kind of irritating this whole season. They’re constantly flip flopping around and don’t stand by anything they say. They’re so against Sam and Dean becoming vessels even when they have no back up plan at all. But then after locking Dean up to keep him from Michael, like two episodes later we get this random Bobby convo where Bobby is like “Sam becoming Lucifer may be the only chance we have” and then he acts like Dean has been holding them back out of fear of losing Sam?? And then all of a sudden they’re cool with the vessel plan and cass and Sam and Dean all get on board as soon as Bobby flips.
Characters like the horsemen were supposed to be a big deal but they each get taken out in one episode. Lucifer is not even scary. At first it seems like they’re making him chill and nice as a buildup to some big manipulative plan which would’ve been a good angle but that never really goes anywhere. His final stand is literally a fist fight with Dean. Zachariah and Lilith were both scarier than that. Even the wraith seemed more powerful. Also I hate the fact that Adam becomes Michael. The audience has literally no reason to care about him, we barely know anything about him. That should’ve been Dean.
There were some good episodes, like the whore of Babylon, the one where Anna tries to kill John and Mary, the poker episode, and Gabriels TV land thing. But the overall season was messy. I think the biggest mistake was too much focus on the horsemen. They spent so much time on that that we didn’t really get to know Lucifer, which made him underwhelming as a final boss. Also Adam. Also the last few episodes felt so rushed.

2023.05.30 22:19 suspicious_steam The iron steed ready for another season

The iron steed ready for another season
Long time lurker on this sub. Wanted to share the glory that is my 1986 Honda Elite CH80. Hard to believe this thing is old enough to run for president and still in decent enough shape to lug me around town…just needs a little help sometimes. It’s broken down more times than I can count, but half the fun is getting it running again. It’s dead simple as long as you have some basic tools and are okay getting your hands dirty.
Looking forward to another season with fresh fluids, new brakes, new fuel line/filter, tires, new belt, headlight recently converted to LED, and changed out my rollers for 9g sliders. Im getting much better acceleration with sliders and up to about 47mph (200lbs) on flat roads with a slight tailwind.

2023.05.30 22:16 MintinSiris Damaged flip

Damaged flip
Hey all! Just got my flip today and when I opened it up I noticed a bit of rattling, flipped it over and saw the cover for the back inlet fan was completely loose, already tried to re-seat it onto the back panel to no luck and went ahead and emailed support but figured I’d ask here to, to see if anyone had something similar happen or had any ideas on how to fix it.

2023.05.30 22:16 Advanced-Fix2990 Idk what to do

Orkin came to my boyfriends to inspect just to be cautious because we are moving soon and recently had a scare. I trusted him to be there alone with the exterminator. But prior to the exterminator coming he specifically asked him to look for bed bugs (which I told him not to do bc I know they can lie). The exterminator said he found a casing so I drove over and they already flipped up the mattress. My boyfriend said he saw it but like he doesn’t really know what they look like it’s me who’s the one paranoid about all of this. The exterminator said there was no other signs besides the casing. He said all we would need is a mattress sanititation but I’m like uhm how would that help. So I told him to leave after we paid him but we don’t know what to do now. Should we get crossfire and DE and a mattress protector to be extra cautious or maybe he’s lying ?

2023.05.30 22:16 Safe_Performance_670 Difficulty with arousal and erections without physical stimulation

A few months ago my girlfriend of 4 years and I were making out. However I noticed I wasn’t getting an erection which has never happened. This alarmed me and I started trying really hard to get one which made it worse. I should note I had been smoking weed all day. I gave up and told her I wasn’t in the mood, she said it was okay but looked visibly upset. The next time I saw her I was very anxious it would happen again and my self esteem was very low. I was anxious and I usually get rock hard from just hugging and cuddling this girl but I was very soft. I normally make the first move so when she went to grab something I jerked off and got hard but didn’t really feel aroused. We started to make out and have sex but it was the worst sex we’d ever had and I lasted like 10 minutes. I could tell she was dissatisfied and this was right before we went long distance for the next 3 months. This entire time she was gone I was very anxious and looked into ways to counter the issue. I stopped smoking weed entirely after 3 years of heavy use, started going to the gym 6 days a week, and quit watching porn for the most part. When I visited her a few weeks ago after 3 months apart I was very nervous. She had been mentioning that I should start wearing condoms and I thought this was a good time to start. I brought a pack and flew down to her house for a week. She picked me up at the airport and when I got in her car I kissed her. I didn’t get hard but tried not to worry about it. We stopped at a store and I kissed her again and this time it was very passionate and I got hard and she looked flustered. That night I was nervous because I was anticipating the moment and didn’t want to mess anything up. We kissed and I got hard and I went to put on the condom. I struggled to get it on though and I started to soften and internally freak out. This was awkard because she was watching and probabaly expected it to be a repeat of the first time. I got it on though and we had sex it was good but wasn’t great. The next night was much better we made out and I put on the condom we had very passionate sex. The next day however she asked me to take a shower spontaneously. I agreed and followed her into the bathroom where we started kissing. It was happening again though I couldn’t get hard or aroused. I felt very anxious and she was upset she pretty much kicked me out of the bathroom and once I got hard outside she didn’t want me to come back in. I flew back home feeling like I let her down. A week later I went to visit her again for prom. I got in her car at the airport kissed her and didn’t get hard again. I was squeezing her leg though and got hard from that. When we got back to her house her parents weren’t home and she went in the bathroom. She came out and climbed on top of me and started kissing me. I couldn’t get it up though. I didn’t want to give up this time so I flipped her on her back and started kissing and grinding against her. I got hard and put on a condom. We had very passionate sex. Now she’s back in my town for the summer. I don’t want to have the issue again. The other night was my birthday and she came over. We started kissing and I got hard right away. We had the best sex we’ve ever had the 4 years we’ve been dating it was very passionate. I’m still struggling to get erect without physical stimulation though I used to get hard from thinking about her, cuddling her, and looking at pictures of her. I’m having these constant intrusive thoughts, “Am I really attracted to her?” “What if I’m gay?” “What if I can’t get an erection?”

2023.05.30 22:15 CanIGetAName4 Frausto, Flip and Dillon were dead wrong for how they treated Spencer

They were WAY outta line for trying to press dude like that in episode 14 and 15. And everyone were just allowing them to be disrespectful and getting mad at Spencer when he reacts.
Flip had no right to be nosy and prying for info from Spencer about the GAU program in the first place. And all Spencer told dude was that he letting grown folks handle grown folks business, and everyone got on his case like he disrespected him or something.
And Frausto and Dillon were HELLA disrespectful in bringing up Billy to insult Spencer. All the other characters just let them niggas pop off, but when Spence understandably starts getting ready to beat they ass, folks catch an attitude with him. Meanwhile, the two MFs that took it to another level for NO reason get off scot free.

"Commander Johnathan Shepherd, XS-104, August 27, 2093, personal log. We really screwed the pooch on this one. I... I don't know where I am. The computer can't recognize the local stellar cartography, at all. I don't even know how long I've actually traveled. It was only about 10 minutes. I guess FTL time dilation is a bitch. The timing was right, but the singularity completely collapsed. My best guess is I'm about 37 light-minutes from an F, maybe G sequence star, sensors are a little screwy so I have to eyeball it. I'm not big on the math, I just fly what and where they tell me.
"I still don't even know what went wrong. I can kind of make out a couple of constellations, but they look... Off. I was supposed to only go a little over 4 light years, a quick jaunt over to Proxima Centauri. I was excited about a chance to go FTL, but now, I don't know. We have a couple of small colonies over there and have had a few successful unmanned runs, along with a light resupply for testing. Given how far off the constellations are, if I'm looking at the right ones, I think I went further, far further than I should have. Heh... I guess manned missions need a bit more work. I keep thinking a little bit about the double-slit experiment. You know, particles acting differently under active observation? Could my just being here have messed things up a bit? I dunno.
"I still have about 80% of my sublight engine fuel and 54% FTL fuel, whatever nonsense they're using to generate that huge amount of power to maintain the envelope. At least THAT math checked out. They wanted a test run of two flights, there and back, with a little extra in the tank, further testing maybe? I could care less right now, and yes, I do care, just a touch. I flipped a 180 now heading back the way I came. If all goes well, I SHOULD be close enough to detect something from Sol. I'm not picking up more than the stellar background so I'm guessing I'm further than man made signals have made it out, or they're just too weak to pick up. At least that gives me some idea of how far out I am, but that really doesn't make me feel better.
"Sandra, I'm sorry, I really thought I'd be back in time for dinner with the in-laws, and no, this wasn't just a way to get out of it. Heh heh. I love you though, I really do, with all my heart. I'm so, so sorry if I can't make it back to watch Beks grow, I'm still going to try my damndest to make it back. I have enough fuel for another shot to make my way, and I'm going to do it. I'll even ask the Devil himself if he'll give me a hand back home, I'm not going to give up.
Rebecca, my sweet Beks, I'm so very sorry if I can't make it back to you. If anything happens, THAT will be my greatest regret. If worse comes to worst, know I genuinely love you and want you to grow strong. I'll always be proud of you. Well, second star to the right, and straight on until morning.

2023.05.30 22:14 hybenose what are some kpop music videos that are creative and iconic?

I’ve been trying to keep up with music videos these days rather then just listening to the music and I’m surprised by how beautiful some of them are ?? so I want to know which music videos left everyone at awe as well
some of my honorable mentions is
Monsta X - LOVE (the entire feel of the music video just teleports me into a different universe fr)
SVT - Fear (its literally art, the beginning to end, the way the camera flipped like that was cultural reset for me)
and the new ones I recommend are
CIX -Save Me, Kill Me (it’s literally a kdrama)
BOYNEXTDOOR - One and Only (they really got the boy next door theme down to a T like the mall shots are crazy)

2023.05.30 22:12 starboxB What year did the civics start having more advanced safety technology?

My parents have offered to help me buy a safer car for my daughter and we’re going with the civic. Around what year did Honda start adding features like lane changing assist (where it lights up on the side view mirrors when someone is in your blind spot), backup cam, etc.?
Thanks!

2023.05.30 22:11 StoaStoa 1 Year Rental + Question on reasonable landlord/tenant responsibilities

Hey all. Haven't rented yet, but want to gather some information beforehand for both ourselves and possible future tenants for last time before making the decision.
Sorry for the long posts/questions.

We are leaving Toronto for two years and haven't decided to sell the current home or move back to the city (after ~2 years). Ideally, we'd rent the home for 12 months to cover the mortgage (18 months if the tenant needs time) and then decide if to move back or sell based on job needs.
A lot of horror stories here and online about renting... I know tenants vary and the majority are good, but assuming the worst scenario/tenants (i.e. do things out of spite). Please don't be offended.

Question 1
There are carpenter ants in the house, as far as we can tell it's from the woods outside, so we can't fully find/kill the colony. Before we sprayed the home, we see about 1-2 ants daily, and after the treatment 1-2 ants monthly. No roaches or bedbugs, but do have spiders and house centipedes as it's near the woods.
If I understand correctly, the landlord is responsible for all pest control if the tenant requests it, this is good (we'd like to keep the home in good condition too). Given the situation, if the ants/spiders/centipedes cannot be fully eliminated, what frequency does the landlord have to provide pest control? Can the tenant use this as a clause that the landlord neglects safe living conditions/repairs?

Question 2
I know someone that's renting, and he said everything from changing the lightbulb is the landlord's responsibility. He would call up the landlord even if one bulb is out, refuse to change it himself (the landlord said he'd reimburse the cost of the bulb), make the landlord drive hours to his unit (or pay a contractor for a bulb change). Can this be real?
We are going to be away from the city, and it's an old house, there are going to be minor repairs and issues (i.e. take 1 second to flip the fuse panel if the fuse trip), we can't make those trips weekly.

Question 3
Similar to the above, what about lawn mowing and snow removal? Again, it looks like the landlord's responsibility. Can we "discount" the rent on the contract if the tenant agrees to do it? How does everyone approach this situation? Third-party contractor?

Question 4
I hope I don't get a lot of heat for this question. If after one year the tenant doesn't want to move out.
If we move back to Toronto, then assume we have to issue N12 and wait for 8-12 months for LTB, so it's at least straightforward...
If we decide to sell, I know it's not legal to ask the tenant to move out for this reason, so most likely cash for the key (from the posts here).
If we explain to the renter that the rental is for 1 year only before renting. Also thought about lower the rent for the inconvenience, as the goal is to cover the mortgage (but it might be more incentive for the tenant not to move out). So I guess both wouldn't work if the tenant decide to stay?

Again, please don't be offended. I realize the rental market is bad for both tenants (high rent) and landlords (long LTB wait time). We want to be fair, but at the same time have to protect our interest too, so if all unfavorable solutions to the questions above, we would just eat the cost/interest/vacant tax/insurance for the 2 years and not rent out at all (or air bnb, or sell now but not likely to afford if decide to move back).
I will not likely reply but thank you all in advance.

2023.05.30 22:10 thislife84 Friend selling on lien 2022 Prius Nightshade FWD for $28K

My friend is selling her 2022 Prius Nightshade FWD edition with 20K miles for $28K. The KBB range is from $32,716-$34,864 for Private Party with an average of $33,800. She said the Toyota dealer offered her $28K and would sell it to me at that price. I did a quick search and found a car with very similar specs selling for $28,999 through cars.com at a private dealership in same city (Los Angeles, CA). Cars.com showed that the average market value for that car is around $28.25K-$39K.
When test driving the car over the weekend she told me the car was on lien, which would have been nice to know before seeing the car as I feel like it’ll be a longer process to get the title. Also, I did feel and hear a little roughness from the front brakes, which my girlfriend who was in the car did not feel. Also, when test driving the car we saw a flashing yellow triangle. Because she is selling it for so below market value and I don’t know if this is something I should even ask to get checked out.
Currently, I drive a 2001 Honda LX with 221K miles and have had it for 13 years. I’m pretty basic when it comes to cars and don’t need bells and whistles. My heart is set on a Prius and have been searching since last year. I’ve been waiting for the market to ease up and budgeting to spend $23K-$26K (including taxes and registration) on a car. I have seen cars in this prices range but are 2018-2021 with 35K-50K miles with more standard features.
This car is outside my budget, as it would cost me $30K in the end because of taxes and registration. However, I do have the money for it. Also, the car definitely has more sophisticated features (leather seats, seat warmers, wireless phone charger etc) that I am not use to and makes me feel like its too much car. Also, I feel like these features would be costly to maintain when years go by and they start having issues. But the car does seem like a good deal and feel torn about it.
My friend did say to me that the car’s registration is due on Friday and doesn’t want to pay for it if I buy. However, because I’ll be paying some sort of registration when the title is transferred to me, I feel like I would be paying double on registration. Plus, the car is still on lien and most likely won’t be getting the titled until a few weeks when she pays back the lien. Really feel like it’s not my responsibility since the title is still under her name and that I’ll be paying my own registration on the car when transferring title under me my name.
I feel so torn because of how good of a deal it is. Such a big decision that I am having trouble deciding. Would appreciate feedback! Thank you in advance!

First owner, I believe these come with a neck carry chain, but I do not have that. Does come with box and the ulticlip. Carry maybe a couple times, and opened a couple packages, edge is still factory sharp, not really any noticeable wear.
[ZT0640 Black](https://imgur.com/a/44YTEuc) **SV:225**
At least second owner, picked up here on the swap. Previous owner cut and carried a couple times, I have not cut or carried at all. Still appears in excellent condition, centering, lock up, and edge are all great. It has brown micarta scales from SDK, and will come with the green/black carbon fiber scales that are normally on the silver model (I have the all black scales on the next ZT up for sale.) I did bend the clip a bit to make it actually usable, and there are marks from doing that shown in the vid/pics. Comes with original box.

At least second owner, picked up here on the swap. Previous owner carried a couple times, I have not cut or carried at all. Centering, lockup and edge are all great. This has a Bronze ano done by USA Made Blades, and has a Gray Precision Zirc Thumbdisc. I did bend the clip a bit to make it actually usable, and there are marks from doing that shown in the vid/pics. Comes with original box.
[ZT0640 Sharp Dress Knives Micarta scales](https://imgur.com/a/P8o4AOk) **FREE**
Blue and Green Micarta scales from Sharp Dressed knives. Picked these up on the swap, but have not carried with them on the knives, still in great condition. These will be **FREE** (one per) with purchase of one of the ZT0640's above.
[Spyderco Shaman S30V](https://imgur.com/a/e83hhGf) **SV:180**
Second owner, picked this up on the swap. Previous owner never cut or carried, and neither did I, so this is still in like new condition, factory sharp, centered. Comes with original box.
[WE Espirit](https://imgur.com/a/C5ddUmQ) **SV:165**
At least second owner. I did have not cut or carried, but I believe the previous owner did carry a bit, as there are some very light marks on the scales, shown in the vid/pics. Still factory sharp and centered. Comes with original box.
[BRS Barebones](https://imgur.com/a/mzhuqYG) **SV:175**
Original owner. This was my first decent bali, and it has seen a lot of love (and drops). Definitely lots of wear on this one, especially on the blade. The blade has been taped off frequently, so there is still residue in some places, but it is actually still moderately sharp, as I never used it for cutting, just flipping. Still flips perfectly, as can be expecting from a BRS. Comes with original Box and the original latch.
[Metonboss Titanium Smock scales](https://imgur.com/a/RnK0rPh) **SV:60 as single, or SV:90 for both scales**
Original owner, these have not been carried with, but they have been used for heat ano experimenting by me. Would really like to move both sets of scales together to save on shipping.
[Match Anderson Burl + Resin Smock scales](https://imgur.com/a/UtIi0tS) **SV:60 as single, or SV:90 for both scales**
Original owner, these have not been carried with, and are in like new condition. These don't have the cutout for the second detent, or the scale alignment pin. Please see below vid for details. They still function flawlessly, the scale alignment pin is left out on these because it shows through the blue resin and doesn't look good. Would really like to move both sets of scales together to save on shipping.

2023.05.30 22:02 michgilgar Stop making poor decisions

I'm not trying to sound harsh, especially because I've been there. I'm not speaking to those who are truly trying to do the right thing, but those with bad habits.
Oftentimes posters here will talk about money struggles without talking about other struggles (like addictions) that usually go hand-in-hand. So if you're addicted to some substance or even a habit like gambling, then stop. If you're trying to take short cuts, steal or cheat your way through life, then you're always going to stay at the bottom.
I had severe addictions when I was homeless and it took a lot of effort to realize it was wrecking my life and something needed changing. I allowed others to help as I cleaned myself up and made a pledge to turn away from the crap that put me where I was.
I dumped my friends that kept me in a rut and started networking with people whose lives I wanted to model mine after. People are always open to answering questions and helping out.
I had heard of a guy who worked around 5 days a MONTH and made 6 figures (because of residuals [royalties]). He was a stuntman. I had done some gymnastics as a child and was always awed by the action flicks I saw on TV.
A new friend put me into contact with a stunt guy and I stated to train in the same gym where he trained. My focus was wholly set on doing stunts, without the distractions of all the garbage in my past. I learned fights, high falls, tricking (flips and stuff), and some driving.
4 years in, I'm in the same position as the guy I looked up to. It's not perfect, nothing is, (there's actually a strike in Hollywood right now so things slowed down), but getting rid of my poor behavior really springboarded my success.
Again, I'm only speaking to those who are trying to get by without getting rid of their bad habits. As for the rest, just keep pushing, keep educating yourselves and ask for help from those willing to provide it. At one point I joined a church that had a benevolence offering, and while I didn't attend for the money, once people learned about my situation, they helped me immensely.
Best of luck to all!

2023.05.30 22:00 ColdBlackWater A day at the races

My mate and I lived in a rural village in Cumbria and at the weekends in the summer we used to go exploring in the fields and forests out the back of his house.
There were miles and miles of farmers' fields, old barns, quarries, tracks, and old train lines to explore. We were about twelve at the time and were walking across a huge field and were stood pretty much in the middle of it, maybe half a mile away from anything other than just grass.
As we walked we noticed a pack of maybe twenty dogs running across the side of a hill on the horizon. We watched as they pounded along from left to right across the side of a hill, about a mile away from where we were stood.
We continued watching as they turned to their right and began to head in our direction, going out of view as they went into a dip in the ground. A few seconds later the first couple of dogs leapt over a fence about half a mile away from us heading straight in our direction.
We just stood there not moving, staring at them closing in. As they cleared the fence some of the dogs caught their back legs and flipped over, only to get straight up and keep running towards us.
It was a scary sight.
We basically shat ourselves right there and then and turned around to run in the opposite direction, heading towards relative safety -- a fence behind which was a section of forest. After running on the lumpy ground for a few seconds I remember turning around to see the dogs still racing towards us.
We both knew we would never make the fence line in time and pretty much just started crying whilst running.
I can remember now almost just giving up and resigning myself to my fate as I could hear the dogs only a few metres away. I turned away not looking at them and continued running, expecting to be knocked down and mauled any second.
We were in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a field, being chased by twenty dogs in the mid-distance.
I've never been so scared.
However -- as they approached, they just curved right past us and didn't pay any notice to us whatsoever, and continued on their merry way.
We had, we later realized, managed to move straight across the aniseed trail the farmers use to mark out race courses for their hound dogs, who were pretty much running along it -- as the two of us tried to "escape".
Regardless, the buzz immediately afterwards was immense!
