2023.03.19 19:56 original-saltyboat iMac G3, Orange Light chime if waiting

So i have a iMac G3 Tray Loading 1998 edition which was according to the lable made in october 1998, But there is a major issue with the machine.
The iMac refuses to boot unless it is left plugged in for up to an hour and once it boots if you reboot or shut down the computer you have to wait the time again and if you turn it on too early it will sit there with an orange light and running fan.
Normally this would be a PSU issue but i have tested the PSU and it results in upon being plugged in the voltage jumping without a hickup to the correct voltage for the rail, e.g 5v jumps to 5.06v and 12v to 12.06v
I have fully taken this iMac apart and rebuilt it but it still refuses to work and i have no idea why. I have replaced PRAM, done all of the CUDA Resets but to no avail the iMac just sits there and will not work?

Any ideas what may have gone wrong with this iMac?

2023.03.19 10:45 No-Collection2089 Buying advice after Apple messed up.

Hey everyone! I am looking for some advice on MacBook Pro specs. I bought a refurbished M1 Pro Macbook Pro 16” 32gb ram and 1 TB last week for £2300.
It arrived with a broken screen. It was sent back to Apple. After some back and forth they cancelled my order as they said they can’t replace the one they sent.
The best they can offer me is either a 14” M2 pro base model (10 core) 32gb ram 1TB or the standard 14” M2 pro (12 core) 16GB ram 1TB.
They would do me either of those at £2400
I could also find a 16” M1 Max 32gb 1TB for £2600
I am trying to work out what will suit my needs best. Better processor or more ram. I am a professional illustrator so use Illustrator and Photoshop daily with some after effects for short form animation. (I.E less than 1 minute.)
I’m actually not to bothered about screen size as I mainly work at a desk with monitor. I went laptop for the times I am away from my studio. It does happen but not too much so the 16 vs 14 comes down to screen real estate vs portability. I see the pros both ways.
I am more stuck on the processor vs ram conundrum of the models available to me.
I am coming from a 27” iMac with 24gb of ram.
Really appreciate any input! Cheers.

2023.03.19 07:28 Nwasmb Downgrade macOs

Hi fellas,
I bought a second hand iMac for my gf’s work, specs below: . iMac 21.5-inch, late 2015 . Processor 2.8GHz quad-core Intel core i5 . Memory 8Gb 1867 mhz DDR3 . Graphics intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536mb
The previous owner erased all his data and told me the mac ios was reverted to iOs El Capitan in the process. I thought i’d install a more recent version to have more software compatible.
I installed Big Sur v11.7.4, and that was a mistake because it’s incredibly slow now. I read (too late) online that the specs are too low to run big sur properly. So I’m looking at downgrading to a older iOs more compatible with that machine.
I’m not very knowledgeable with Mac systems and would like to make sure I don’t mess up more. Could you advise me on the iOs version that would work best with this machine/spec? El Capitan was working fine, but is there a more recent one that can run as smoothly? What’s the best method to downgrade iOs? I don’t have data to backup, no time-machine backup, and when I reboot with opt/alt+cmd+R it propose to reinstall macOs Monterrey but that’s even more recent so likely to make it even slower right?

2023.03.18 20:24 phunstraw Downloaded originals

I have an iMac with my photos library stored on an external drive. I have "download originals to Mac" checked in Photos. I would like to keep it this way. I have 2 MacPros elsewhere that have "Optimize Mac Storage" checked. On the Power Macs everything works fine, specifically face scanning. On my iMac at home it does not kick in and the iMac is a little sluggish. I have tried all the ways suggested to kick photoanalysisid in to gear, but nothing. On my 2 Mac Pros face recognition works fine. Is it possible that "download originals to Mac" is taking up too many resources? I don't need my iMac to read from the stoage, but I would like to have full quality back ups of my Photo Library on my property.

2023.03.18 05:00 jab136 Halts still very elevated, several banks halted most or all of the days this week. 4/5 days this week had more halts than 80% of all trading days since August 2019. 5 day average was above the 95th percentile all 5 days, 20 day average broke 90th percentile Thursday and Friday.

Halts still very elevated, several banks halted most or all of the days this week. 4/5 days this week had more halts than 80% of all trading days since August 2019. 5 day average was above the 95th percentile all 5 days, 20 day average broke 90th percentile Thursday and Friday.
So that was a really interesting week with the NYSE current page being down all of Monday either well into or even all the way through after hours trading, and with all the uncertainty in the banks. Halts remained significantly elevated all week with a lot of activity on bank stocks.
Ok, now on to my regular post...
Disclaimer due to recent issues in relation to brigading. I am simply attempting to provide a metric for market wide volatility as a possible alternative to other volatility indices such as VIX. I will talk about quite a few tickers other than GME, but that is simply an attempt to comment on odd or interesting behavior from those stocks that didn't match with the average. I am not advocating for or against any of those other tickers, simply attempting to give data and context for that data. I originally started looking at halt data when I got curious about which other stocks halted between Jan 27 and Jan 29 of 2021 to see if I could find a pattern or some interesting data that might be useful down the line.
For anyone wondering what use it is to have a volatility index or why an alternative to VIX could be useful, this comment chain from my post on December 26th 2022 gives a pretty good ELIA. Also, there has been a lot of chatter on and off over the last few years about VIX and I for one would love to have an alternative that it can just be compared to since more data is always better IMO.

VIX ELIA
gonna stick with the data tag again this week.
An analysis of all of the stocks that halted in the first minute of trading on 1/24/23. (part 1 part 2)
Daily post about 12/9 with highest number of halts on a single ticker in over 2 years.
Recent daily tracking post with info about halts going way past 16:00:00 EST
NYSE halt tracking page is seeing some glitches (or possible just odd behavior) over the last few days. (Posted 9/30)
Market Wide Limit Up Limit Down (LULD halts) significantly higher than normal. Over 100 halts today on 28 different tickers. (posted on August 2)
An analysis of every stock that had an LULD halt between Jan 27 and Jan 29 of last year. (posted June 15)
Adding a further TLDR per mod request; LULD halts are volatility halts on a specific ticker that halts trading for a minimum of 5 minutes on that ticker. Several months ago I realized that the NYSE records all the halts that happen every trading day and save them on a website. So knowing this, I wondered if I could possibly find other tickers that had a significant number of halts between Jan 27 and Jan 29 of last year. When I looked at the data, I found a lot of the usual suspects and a few other tickers that hadn't really been discussed previously very much as possible swap basket stocks. I also found that, while the volume of halts did spike in that period last year, the highest period by far in the available data was in mid March 2020. So I theorized that halts are likely correlated to market volatility and may provide an alternative metric to VIX. There has also been some odd activity with resume times for some halts going significantly into after hours (halts typically resume by 16:00:01 EST at the latest).
Ok, now that that is out of the way, I have continued monitoring the NYSE page that tracks halts. On 10/26, there was an issue where the final halt wasn't showing up on the .csv file. There were no halts that continued past 16:00:01 EST this week, Tuesday and Today both had halts going into close but they resumed at 16:00:00 and 16:00:01 respectively. The NYSE current halt page was down all of Monday, and I personally was unable to access it until after AH had ended. The archived halts page on that same site worked fine the entire time, it was just the halts for Monday specifically that could not be accessed on that site until much later.
This week had an explosive start in terms of halts with 238 halts on 53 tickers on Monday. This included more than 10 halts on 6 different banks, and numerous halts on other banks and financial institutions. The six banks with 10 or more halts on Monday alone on their primary ticker were PACW, FRC, EWBC, WAL, ZION, and CUBI. CMA is another bank that halted on Monday, but it only had 9 halts and didn't make the cutoff for a single day, however it halted again on Tuesday so it's total was 10 or higher. The ticker AMBI, which does not belong to a bank, had 11 halts on Tuesday, and another halt on Wednesday.
PACW is the primary ticker for PacWest Bancorp, and had 25 halts on Monday, with 5 more on Tuesday, 1 on Wednesday, and 3 more on Thursday. The associated ticker PACWP had an additional 4 halts on Monday, but did not halt any other day.
FRC is the primary ticker for First Republic Bank, and had 37 halts on Monday, with 4 more Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, 15 on Thursday, and 1 more on Friday to round out the week. The associated tickers FRC PRH, FRC PRI, FRC PRJ, FRC PRL, and FRC PRK all had at least one halt each this week in addition to the halts on the primary ticker.
EWBC is the primary ticker for East West Bancorp, Inc, and it had 11 halts on Monday but did not halt any other day this week. No other associated tickers had any halts this week, but I don't know if there are any other associated tickers for this bank.
WAL is the primary ticker for Western Alliance Bancorporation, and had 46 halts on Monday, followed by 17 more halts distributed between Tuesday and Friday (all 5 days this week had at least 1 halt). No other associated tickers had any halts this week, but I don't know if there are any other associated tickers for this bank.
ZION is the primary ticker for Zions Bancorporation, National Association, and had 14 halts on Monday, but no halts on any other day this past week. No other associated tickers had any halts this week, but I don't know if there are any other associated tickers for this bank.
CMA is the primary ticker for Comerica Incorporated, which is a regional bank. It only had 9 halts on Monday, but it had another halt on Tuesday, bringing it's total for the week above the 10 or more cutoff that I use for filtering tickers on this post. No other associated tickers had any halts this week, but I don't know if there are any other associated tickers for this bank.
CUBI is the final bank on this list that had 10 or more halts this past week on a single ticker. The ticker belongs to Customers Bancorp, Inc, and had 10 halts on Monday, and no halts any other day this week. The associated tickers CUBI PRE and CUBI PRF had 4 and 5 halts respectively on Monday in addition to the 10 on the primary ticker.
The only ticker that had more than 10 halts this week that was not a bank was AMBI, which had 11 halts on Tuesday, and 1 more halt on Wednesday. The ticker belongs to Ambipar Emergency Response, which appears to be some sort of emergency environmental cleanup company out of Brazil.
The daily, 5 day, and 20 day total halts are a simple sum (sum the tickers from the data for the daily, sum the daily totals for the multi day totals).
The Daily tickers with halts, 5 day total tickers with halts, and 20 day total tickers with halts only count any individual ticker once. If a ticker has 5 halts in one day, it still only counts as 1 ticker that day. If a ticker halts 3 different days it only counts as ticker in the 5 or 20 day totals. All of the percentages are actually percentiles and are calculated as percentile=100*(1-x/n) where x is the number of days with an equal or higher number of halts than the day being looked at and n is the number of days in the data (891 this week).
I am adding in another table starting this week to give the cutoff values for the required number of halts in a single day, 5 day period, or 20 day period in order to get into the 70th, 80th, and 90th percentiles for total and unique halts. This value gets recalculated and applied retroactively to all past dates.
Percentile target values
Percentile Daily total halts Daily Unique halts 5 Day average total [sum] 5 day average unique halts [sum] 20 day average total [sum] 20 day average unique halts [sum]

It has been 164 trading days since activity spiked from 16 halts on 14 tickers on July 27 to 75 halts on 20 tickers on July 28. Just 2 trading days later (August 2) total halts broke 100 for the 4th time in my dataset (116 halts on 28 ticker on August 2).
Swapcorn had 3 halts on Tuesday related to an announcement that they are going forward with their dilution of their primary stock with the new ticker that they created a while back. Here is the table with the halts on GME and the Headphone stock during the sneeze these two tickers get mentioned every week for obvious reasons on GME, but Headphone actually had more total halts and only 1 less day in a row with halts than we did.

The last of the following charts (Ratio of total halts to unique halts) uses a simple sum of unique daily halts so it can double count the same ticker if it halted multiple days in that period, this is the only point in any of my calculations where 2 different halts on the same ticker actually count as 2 halts and not a single unique ticker halting, it still won't count multiple halts in a single day as separate halts, but a ticker like WAL would show 5 unique halts this week even though it had far more halts than that each day.

2023.03.16 16:03 SpellGlittering1901 1999 G3 iMac : what to do with it ?

Hi,
Just found this old iMac and I wondered what type of funny thing I could do with it ? Because the classic things to with old hardware (server or hard drive) are impossible with this one because it’s way too old, but I wondered if anyone had any cool idea ? First think I thought was to install some Linux type of thing where I could chose exactly what I install to make the most of this all hardware but even for that I don’t really know how to do it.
Thank you.

2023.03.15 03:23 caffeinator7 Backing Up Files via Recovery Mode on MacOS

Today my 2015 iMac was acting up so I restarted it. Now whenever I turn it on I get the 'Stop Sign' as seen here:
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204156?cid=mc-ols-mac-article_ht204156-macos_ui-10062020
I still have access to the Internet Recovery Mode. First I tried the 'First Aid' on my internal drive but that failed. I then tried to copy a disk image to an external drive too but that failed too("operation failed with status 2"). I then tried to 'Reinstall macOS' option from Recovery mode but it failed also (I tried installation on both the internal hard drive and the external).
If anybody has any suggestions I would really appreciate it, thanks!

2023.03.15 02:01 djmalibiran Tanong tungkol sa Apple K-12 device

(Asking for a friend)
Nagtatanong ang aking napakabait na kaibigan kung pwede daw makipagpalit ng computer ang anak nya sa kanya.
My friend is using a Windows 11 laptop. Itong anak nya, na nasanay na din sa pag-gamit ng Windows, ay nagrequest sa kanya kamakailan lamang na bilhan sya ng iMac and so my friend did with k-12 discount.
Kwento sa akin ng friend ko na his son is going nuts using it. 😂 Tinanong daw sya ng anak nya kung pwede daw makipag-palit ng computer. Tapos naalala nya na that device was bought intentionally for a student. Kaya tinanong nya ako kung ok lang ba daw na makipagpalit.
I'm currently reviewing the T&C pero too puyat to completely understand it. 😂 https://www.apple.com/ph-k12/shop/open/salespolicies
Ano sa tingin nyo guys?

2023.03.14 19:51 Fun-Vehicle5686 Can I use ISP wifi and AP wifi?

I have xfinity home internet and I have a unify AP for wifi internet. The wifi from the modem alone was way too weak and my tv was only getting 20mbps download speed.
My work pc is upstairs (brick townhome) and i need to have that ethernet connected. The AP I moved closer to the Firestick downstairs but I also have an iMac upstairs that uses wifi.
I currently only have the wifi from the AP enabled, xfinity wifi is off
if I were to use the AP wifi for downstairs only, and xfinity wifi upstairs, will that be bad in any way? Or is there a best practice to split wifi like that so performance isn't affected?

2023.03.14 03:46 jab136 NYSE halt tracking page is back up, there were 238 halts on 53 tickers today. FRC had 37 halts, WAL had 46 (theoretical maximum 78). 6 different banks had 10 or more halts today.

Things are getting really spicy. The NYSE current halt tracking page was broken all day, but it is back up now. This is not one of my normal posts since I typically wait until the end of the week to post these, but today was too spicy not to post. The halt tracking page I linked was down all day, and has never been down in my last 7-8 months of tracking it daily, it was still possible to get data from a few other sources, but they aren't formatted in the same manner.
I finally got the data downloaded and put into my excel spreadsheets and am able to compare today to other high profile time periods.

Today was not in the top 20 days with most separate tickers with halts, it is the 23rd highest, if Jan 24 from this year is included (the day when over 70 tickers halted at the opening bell because of a "glitch")
Today actually has two separate tickers that qualify for the top 10 tickers with the most halts in a single day, this has never happened since August 2019. All other days with this many halts on a single ticker were either halts up, or the ticker had super low volume so I cannot determine the direction of movement.

2023.03.13 15:30 Deadlogic_ Urgent Help Needed (Latency Issue)

I hope this is ok to post. I've searched high and low for a solution, but to no avail. I'll try to explain as best as possible, hoping someone here can guide me.
I'm currently recording some songs in my little home studio. I'm using all virtual instruments, amp modellers etc. without any issues so far. As of today, I have suddenly developed fairly noticeable latency when trying to track a vocal (almost sounds like slapback delay).
I've loaded up my previous recorded tracks to check if this is a systemwide issue, but when testing my vocal on the others, there is no problem - just this latest track (and as said, only since this morning).
I've gone over all settings just to check (input latency, switching driver on/off etc.) and I've also done 'frozen in place' for all my 'instruments', and created new 'input tracks' but nothing is working. I've used Logic for a few years, so I'm not too bad when it comes to using it, but this has stumped me.
I'm using version 10.7.7 on an iMac with 3,3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5, and 40GB of RAM, so the system is always good for this stuff.
If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated as I can't go any further with this track that I'm desperate to finish.
Thanks in advance.

2023.03.13 03:15 NostalgicRetro73 Remembering SL

I was a SL user from 2008-2019. Mesh was everywhere, my wedding ministering was slowing down, so I couldn’t afford mesh shapes, skin etc, so I decided to stop playing. But I do logon every December and get all the advent gifts.
SL was very addicting. I would be on it constantly in the beginning and dance in rock n roll clubs. Then I started to host. And host. And host. In the first 4 years I’d host my ass off. Made sure I acted like I was pleased to see all who entered the clubs. “Hello!” “Welcome to Rock n Roll Cafe!” Etc. Collected lots of those text n sounds files. Blasted them off a lot. “Are we havin fun?!” “Don’t forget to tip the dj!” After awhile, for me anyway, it got old. Was wanting a new line of work. Thought up being a wedding minister after being a guest at some friend’s wedding. It looked easy. It was a fun ride. Being a wedding minister. I was an independent one because people who I encountered who owned wedding sims were quite challenging to deal with. So I just simply had Wedding Minister as a pic in my profile and all my friends knew I was one so word of mouth and profile pervs got me a lot of business. I gave it up after 5 years because the ratio of divorces opposed to being tight knit couples were very uneven. Id hear divorce stories from all my clients, and Id be 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄. Rolling my eyes. Some wrote very beautiful vows but somehow they didnt really understand what they were writing or they’d still be married. I loved the money but people’s “I love yous” are said so easily without heart or soul or anything and that’s my main love of ministering, watching love bond. I do know currently only 3 couples that are still together. Out of sooooooooooo many that are not. I also vampired a few times. Can’t say how many times I turned vamp to human, human to vamp, but it was fun. Met some decent kings and queens and minions. Also met some very jerky bitchy egotistical vamps also. 🙄. Same goes for biker groups. Was in a couple of them too, interesting folks. 😂.
Had kids, adopted kids, hell I tried being a lil kid once. I was just curious what it was like. Totally weird. Made an alt. Made this lil boy. Got adopted by a singer in SL and his now ex SL wife. Had to talk like…”Hewwo, my name iz Gweg.” Or some weird childish talk like that. I didn’t last long, I was happy being an adult. Some like being kids so to each their own.
Met some weirdos. Met some ladies that were men behind the computer. One couple I ministered were editors of a very large boob magazine. Lesbian couple. They were awesome. But the following they had was so odd.Imagine being a minister, standing behind the alter, facing two women with boobs so big that they had to be LLL sized. They were irregularly big. Now imagine everyone in the cathedral with the same sized boobs. I was giggling the whole wedding through. I got that job because the minister they had wasnt keen on this enormously big boobed couple. I don’t judge, so I accepted. Watching women exit the cathedral though was the funniest part. They were like bumper cars.
It’s nice now being unaddicted to SL. Real life was kinda getting passed by and RL to me came first. But I always logon from time to time and bug my sl siblings and friends.
I think the worst part was how Firestorm, Phoenix, Emerald before that got my iMacs very heated. SL uses a lot of power. Killed an imac due to it. Sorry SL, love my imac more. 😂
P.s. I forgot my SLife long playing Tiny Empires. Dont remember how many kingdoms I’d jump into. But happy where I’ve been for 4 years now, a record. 😂. Met some interesting odd people in TE too. Lol
