2023.06.07 23:24 Rev-3li This lady is a fake that’s been getting money from tik tok supporters while she’s a horrible person who faked all her withdrawals and lied to everyone and also is a child abuser and on the run from cops
To explain this will take a second. She moved in very close to me recently about 5 months ago and I know the people who live there very well. She came here and bummed off everyone to get drugs and alcohol and made their house a very bad place. She moved her 4 kids in with her who she constantly belittles and calls terrible names(youngest 5) and let’s them run the streets while she talks on the phone about giving guys blowjobs and being nasty(I’ve heard it from my house, that’s how loud she talks about it). She said she’s “detoxing” and made countless tik tok videos about it and started getting support and money sent to her from it. During the videos she is shaking and acting like she’s going through with drawls and as soon as it’s done recording is smoking cigarettes and drinking beer and calling her kids names and ignoring them while she drinks. She constantly leaves her kids alone to perform sexual acts to men in their cars in front of the house and is overall just a terrible person. She’s drove drunk with all of her kids and has also ran one of them(her youngest daughter) over while drunk. Don’t believe me then check the kern county police records in California. She’s a fake and a liar that gets praise for being a “great person” online. Please flag these tik toks and help her get exposed for who she is. Her name is heather dysart from Bakersfield CA, she goes by nicki Nicole on Facebook if anyone wants to say anything. Tik toks are on jennyfur from her sisters page that you can see in the picture if you want to report. I also wanted to add she attacked someone in their own home yesterday and ran from the scene and left all her children there to deal with it. She’s from oildale(obviously I mean look at her) and has been a really bad mother and person for as long as I can remember submitted by Rev-3li to Bakersfield [link] [comments]
2023.06.07 22:21 mszanka Sussex County Pride: June 10th in Newton! And After-Party!
Hi everyone! Figured I’d spread the word about Sussex County Pride taking place this Saturday! The comments section in another post by one of the performing artists, Sludge Bunny, made it clear that not many people know that Sussex County hosts it’s own pride event. It’s been organized by Zoe Heath (I am posting on her behalf) from its very beginning in 2017. This year, the event has moved to a larger location because the Newton Green couldn’t accommodate the growing participation. Please see the flyer for more information and the link here : https://www.sussexcountypride.com It would be awesome if a whole bunch of you could come up and support us in our sometimes overlooked part of the State in favor of other areas. The County has definitely changed over the past few years and for example, this week, Sparta became the first municipality in the County to vote to fly the Pride Flag. The After-Party will be at Stanhope House in well, Stanhope, with free admission! Come join and have some fun! The weather is looking great and hopefully more rainbows instead of smoke! submitted by mszanka to newjersey [link] [comments]
2023.06.07 21:55 EatinSLOCal Splash Café – San Luis Obispo Location - Review
Background: Okay, bear with me on this one. Splash Café is the go-to place for clam chowder in the county, so much so that they’ve been able to expand into supermarkets’ freezer sections with their clam chowder bread bowls and offer their food on Gold Belly. All that being said, because of an incident (that is completely my fault) 15 years ago, it is hard for me to stomach their clam chowder (or Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum) without getting nauseous. But it’s time for me to get over it and return to Splash Café to try their Fish & Chips as well as their SLO only Munchies Menu! Get Chow'd Setting: 📍1491 Monterey St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 Splash Café’s San Luis Obispo Location is located on Monterey, kitty corner from Famous Frank’s Hot Dogs, next to Petit Soleil. Inside are a food counter and a bakery counter with a fair amount of seating from pseudo booths to high top tables, as well as seating outside in front and to the side of the café. They also have a location in Pismo Beach and you can also buy their clam chowder, hot sauce, spice rubs, and merchandise through their website. They’re open Daily from 8 AM – 3 PM. Menu/Selection: The menu is pretty extensive, but let’s start with the Chowder and Chili can be served in their famous bread bowl, a cup, bowl, pint, or quart, and can be topped with seafood, clam, bacon, green onion, and cheese, and paired with a slice or loaf of grilled sourdough. Under the “…And Chips” menu is 6 options – fish, clam strips, calamari, shrimp, chicken strips, and a combo with your choice of 2 of the previously mentioned options. Salads and Wraps have 4 salads – garden, seafood, grilled salmon, or fried chicken, and 3 wraps – Killer Cod, Salmon BLAT, or Cali. Tacos have two topping options – classic (lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, and avocado ranch) or Baja (aioli slaw, tomato, jalapenos, citrus salsa, and avocado ranch, with 5 meat options – fried fish, grilled salmon, grilled ahi tuna, friend chicken, or tri-tip. You can also get a half or full pound of steamers served with grilled sourdough. Specialty Sandwiches include a lobster roll, Shrimp SLO Boy, Tri-Tip, Cod, and Salmon or Ahi dressed Beach style (Aioli slaw, tomato, onion, caper Dijon, & 1000 Island) or Original (Lettuce, tomato, onion, & caper Dijon). There’s also cheeseburgers, with optional bacon or western styles. For Vegetarians, there is a Veggie Burger, Veggie Sandwich, or Impossible Chik’n Sandwich. Deli Sandwiches – Grilled Cheese, Reuben, Pesto Turkey Club, BLAT, Chicken Sandwich and more. There’s family platters that let you pick proteins. They also have corndogs, chilidogs, and a regular hotdog. On top of all of that, there’s a Breakfast Menu! From the served all day portion, there’s an egg sandwich, loaded tots, avocado toast, a munchie bowl, oatmeal, and pancakes. Served until 11 AM are bacon, chorizo, vegan, or veggie breakfast burritos, a cheese omelet, French toast, or scrambled eggs. On the Munchie Menu are a selection of Loaded Cheesy Tots – Morning Munchie (eggs, bacon, green onions, and other breakfast fixings), Veg out (Chik’n, avocado, etc.), Train Wreck (their take on chili fries), Get Chow’d (topped with clam chowder and fixings), and Loaded Tots (bacon and sauces). On top of all this, there’s a full case of various baked goods from the Splash Bakery. Fish & Chips What I Had: I had the Fish & Chips as well as the Get Chow’d Loaded Cheesy Tots! The Fish & Chips were 3 pieces of battered and fried cod (I think) paired with curly fries, both seasoned with what I believe is a mixture of Old Bay and Parsley (or at least the ingredients from Old Bay). The fish were kind of classic American fish & chips breading, not too heavy, not light either, but it tasted good. I was a little disappointed in the curly fries, not only were they lukewarm where the fish was hot, the seasoning that’s on the fish didn’t really hit the same on the fries. The tartar sauce was pretty good, seemed standard. The Get Chow’d was cheesy tots with chowder, bacon, green onion, cheese, and according the menu I was supposed to be given a side of Carrot Pepper Hot Sauce, but I did not receive any (that might’ve improved the dish, I love a dash of hot sauce on my chowder. I know it sounds gross… but it also is gross… yet somehow the combination of the chowder, bacon, green onion, and cheesy tots all work together. If I didn’t have my hang-ups about Splash’s chowder, I’m sure I would’ve devoured it faster than I already did. Would I Have It Again: Probably not. That is to say, I would rather try other things on the menu and not the chowder that still haunts me. I’d also like to try their SLO Boy and Lobster Rolls and the breakfast items. The Munchie Menu is a cool idea, makes sense for our college town, I just wish Splash was open at a time of day it made sense to have the munchies. The staff is always friendly, and there were plenty of spots to eat even during their lunch rush. So with all of this in mind, Splash Café – San Luis Obispo Location gets an Eatin’ SLOCal Rating of – Give It A Try! submitted by EatinSLOCal to EatinSLOCal [link] [comments]
2023.06.07 21:44 ProgressiveDemocrats The Rise of the Green New Deal Advocates: How the Radical Became Mainstream
The Rise of the Green New Deal Advocates: How the Radical Became Mainstream The year 2019 marked a significant turning point in American politics with the introduction of the Green New Deal. This bold legislative proposal, aimed at addressing climate change and promoting economic equality, was initially met with skepticism, even dismissal, by many. Its champions, a group of newly elected progressive lawmakers, were regarded as radical outcasts in the traditionally moderate landscape of Congress. Fast forward to today, and these same individuals are not just members of Congress – they are leading figures, their voices, and ideas shaping national policy. This transformation begs the question: How did the Green New Deal advocate rise to power?
A Bold Vision First and foremost, the Green New Deal was more than just a proposal; it was a vision. It outlined a comprehensive, integrated approach to tackling the intertwined climate change and economic inequality crises, setting clean energy goals, job creation, and social justice. This vision, coupled with the urgency of the environmental crisis, struck a chord with a segment of the American public and created a solid support base for these progressive lawmakers.
Grassroots Mobilization Secondly, the Green New Deal advocates recognized the power of grassroots activism. Leveraging the support of activist organizations, they mobilized citizens around the Green New Deal, prompting public demonstrations and calls to action that kept the proposal in the public eye and exerted pressure on elected officials. This engagement has been instrumental in elevating the advocates from the fringes to the center of the political stage.
Changing Public Opinion Over time, public sentiment towards climate change and economic inequality has shifted significantly. More Americans are acknowledging the reality of climate change and the need for drastic action, while economic disparities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic have amplified calls for economic reform. The Green New Deal, once deemed radical, increasingly resonates with public opinion, propelling its advocates into positions of influence.
Internal Party Dynamics Within the Democratic Party itself, a shift has been occurring. Progressives have pushed the party further to the left, advocating bold action on climate change and economic inequality. This push and pull have opened space for the Green New Deal advocates, allowing them to rise through the ranks and attain key roles within Congress.
Effective Use of Media Finally, these lawmakers effectively leveraged social media platforms to communicate their ideas directly to constituents, bypassing traditional media gatekeepers. They made complex issues relatable and accessible, building a broad, diverse coalition of supporters instrumental in their rise to power.
The rise of the Green New Deal advocates demonstrates the dynamism of American politics. It reminds us that ideas once considered radical can, given the right combination of vision, grassroots mobilization, shifting public sentiment, internal party dynamics, and savvy media use, become influential and even mainstream. It is an inspiring tale of political ascent and a testament to the power of perseverance, bold ideas, and engaged citizenry. Today, these former outcasts sit at the helm of Congress, their radical plan now a cornerstone of contemporary political discourse.
Thanks for joining me on this daily dive into political waters. That's my take, and as always, I relish the opportunity to hear yours. Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts, insights, or even counter-arguments in the comments section below. After all, discourse is the lifeblood of democracy! Don't forget to catch up on more of "my daily rant" in the Blue Wave Democrats community. Until next time, keep making waves! submitted by

Thanks to

▌Main stories covered:
- [NEWS] LMG Corp sold to Maxwealth Infinity for ₱402-M... LMG Corp [LMG 3.35 suspendedl] [link] shocked the market with news that it signed a share purchase agreement with Maxwealth Infinity Holdings (MIH) that will see MIH take a 67% stake in LMG for ₱402 million (₱3.10/share). MIH is a holding company owned and chaired by Alfonso Huang (company website), who is also the President of e-pon, an e-money app. MIH was founded in 2021, MIH has investments in “various financial and information technology companies”, but its website reveals an additional interest in real estate development and entertainment. The disclosure said that MIH made the LMG purchase with the intent to “invest in the hospitality industry and the construction industry”, and that it will “expand the portfolio of [LMG] to include the operating subsidiaries of [MIH].” The disclosure said that LMG and MIH intend to complete the tender offer and close the transaction within 60 days.
- MB: This one was truly surprising to me, both because LMG is a sleepy stock and because I have no idea who Maxwealth Infinity is. The name sounds like any of the thousands of Facebook groups that ply scam financial advice, so I’m glad that the disclosure specifically said that Maxwealth “does not solicit, accept, or take investments/placements from the public”. My quick due diligence on the company didn’t turn up much of substance either. Their website reads like a try-hard resume cover letter, filled with bland fluffer words like “impact”, “contribute”, “strategic”, “enriching”, and “potential”. A media scan turns up a paid promo piece about Mr. Huang, and a story about MIH donating sacks of rice to typhoon victims. The MIH career page shows that they’re hiring eight positions for their Taguig office, all posted three days ago. It’s not really clear what MIH is, what it’s done, or what it plans to do. I can’t help but feel SquidPay vibes, but I hope that it’s more tangible and substantive than that.
- [UPDATE] MPI still searching for a valuation firm... Metro Pacific [MPI 4.42 ▼0.9%; 83% avgVol] [link] Chairman, Manny V. Pangilinan, recently said that the MPI Consortium was still in the middle of a process to find an acceptable firm to perform the valuation to act as the basis of the MPI Consortium’s tender offer price. MVP said that they’ve been “given a list of accredited firms”, and that there are “probably only two” on that list that do not have the kind of conflicts that would come from working with another company in the MVP-led group of companies in the past. MVP said that he’s had “indirect” talks with some of the larger shareholders (SSS and GSIS), revealed that those groups had negative feedback on the initial price, but would not commit to a higher price being the likely outcome of the next valuation.
- MB: Aside from the whole “valuations are weird” angle and the fact that MPI is too sophisticated to have been caught by surprise about the potential accreditation of the first valuation firm it used, I’m mostly disappointed that it feels like MPI might already be losing that brief period of intense swagger. MPI has been a sleepy giant for most of my investing life, so it was pretty shocking for it to suddenly jolt to life and start making aggressive moves into the agricultural sector. There was the Axelum [AXLM 2.48 ▼2.4%; 5% avgVol] stake, then the announcement of the massive agricultural facility, and don’t get me started about that SP New Energy [SPNEC 1.46 unch; 0% avgVol] deal! My point is that MPI was rewriting its narrative in real-time while demonstrating the agility and nerve of a company with a clear vision for a future filled with big bets and growth. Where did that energy go? I want more of that green corporate raider energy, and less of this sleepy corporate bureaucracy drama.
- [NOTES] Quick takes from around the market...
- Boulevard Holdings [BHI 0.08 ▲2.5%; 165% avgVol] [link] appeared to signal that it will be suspended for a while and that it has decided to spend this time releasing a mini-series of disclosures to explain the development strategy for each of the company’s “major assets”, its “significant land parcels”, and its “cash hoard”. The most recent disclosure started with its Fridays Siargao location.
- MB Quick Take: This is such a weird look that I don’t even know where to start. Dripping info to shareholders gives off massive “long suspension” vibes, but it also manages to give off “we are just making it up as we go along” vibes. If you know the strategy now, why not tell us now? I don’t know if I can beat the BHI dead horse any longer, though. BHI, more like “Belated Hypothesizing Inc”, amirite?
- Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) [link] revealed that the May 2023 Consumer Price Index reading was 120.9, which was 6.1% higher y/y. The rate of inflation in April was 6.6%, based on a CPI reading of 120.9.
- MB Quick Take: Keen readers will notice that the actual CPI measurement was the same between April and May, meaning that the actual level of prices didn’t change at all from month to month. The only thing that changed was that April 2022’s CPI reading was lower because it was at the start of the long and intense price inflation period we saw throughout FY22. Remember: inflation might go down, but (generally) prices won’t.
- Repower Energy Development [REDC 5.00 pre-IPO] [link] provided an updated IPO schedule after it had previously paused the listing process to take on a significant anchor investor from Japan. The new pricing date is June 23, with an offer period from June 28 through July 14, and a listing ten days later on July 24.
- MB Quick Take: It looks like the bones of the offering are the same (230 million shares for ₱5.00/share, with 87% primary), but investors are going to want to pay close attention to the updated prospectus that we should get once the price has been set. Will REDC share any information about the anchor investor, and is the anchor investor the type that provides any strategic advantages for REDC going forward? Energy stocks are hot, but IPOs have been terrible for investors lately. Will REDC’s pricing take the recent performance into account to entice more retail investors to take a look?
- DoubleDragon [DD 7.20 unch; 19% avgVol] [link] said that its 548-room Hotel101 in Cebu is 100% sold-out 21 months after it started the pre-sale process, and 12 months before its project completion date. DD also took the time in this disclosure to let us know about how this location will be the first to “adopt” the “AI designed Hotel101 Banig accent design”.
- MB Quick Take: I don’t know how I feel about DD name-dropping AI as the designer of a banig. Well, that’s not true, I know how I feel about it, but I guess I’m just not sure how DD anticipated that we’d feel about it? Because that’s hilarious. This was meant to show that Hotel101 would “always stay ahead of the curve in technological advances”, but I think its inclusion sends the opposite message.

2023.06.07 20:37 BloodWagon On September 15, 1958 someone deliberately caused the crash of a Soo Line passenger train in Hamel, MN, and got away with it
By Rail to Canada, no Passport Needed The clock showed 9:30 PM, Central Standard Time, September 15, 1958. Soo Line Train 9/13 was 21 minutes behind schedule as it cruised along in the fall Minnesota night, heading into the shallow bend towards the town of Hamel. There was no need to slow down from 58 MPH (93 kph) as the approaching station was not a stop for the train on its way to Portal, North Dakota and Winnipeg, Manitoba. From Minneapolis to Glenwood, Minnesota the two trains, also known as the “Dominion” and the “Winnipeger”, ran together before being split for their final destinations. The Dominion would be picked up by the Canadian Pacific for connection to Vancouver, British Columbia the next day.
GP9 diesel-electric locomotive No. 557 lead the train with the engineer and fireman aboard, followed by cabless power unit 503B. Behind them came six baggage cars, five sleepers, three coaches, and a lounge car, not in that order. Aboard the cars were 75 passengers, about five Pullman Company sleeping car porters, three dining service employees, three mail clerks, two baggagemen, the conductor (H.M. Ratje), and two brakemen.
Bright headlights shown ahead in the dark. The firemen, seated on the lefthand side of the cab, was observing a road crossing ahead of them. The engineer, Herman J. Steinke, was keeping an eye out on the tracks ahead. One detail was missed by both men, however. A green light supposed to mark the switch for the siding that served local businesses in Hamel was dark. In fact, although they never could have seen it, the lock had been bashed off and the switch thrown so it pointed into the siding. The lamp extinguished. At full speed, Train 9/13 rocked hard and as it hit the siding curve 120 feet later, then jackknifed across the tracks at 9:35 pm.
The Accident Miraculously, no one was killed as the first eight cars and both locomotives derailed spectacularly. Sixteen people were hospitalized for their injuries among the dozens treated at the scene. Witnesses in Hamel reported the crash impact felt like an earthquake, calling in to the Hennepin County Sheriff to notify them of the disaster. The Sheriff’s emergency calls were answered by Civil Defense rescue teams and six fire departments within thirty minutes to begin the process of extracting those unable to escape the cars. Uninjured patrons were bussed back to Minneapolis by the Soo Line for the night, to figure out ways of getting them on to their destinations.
It was during the rescue efforts that a Hamel Fire Department firefighter noticed the damage to the switch lock that prevented tampering. While it was locked to point into the switch rather than the main line, he noticed that the shackle of the lock had clearly been battered open before being re-closed. Investigation by police and ICC officials also disclosed that someone had tried to batter the lamp’s connecting bolt so it could be rotated to give a false ‘clear’ indication. When that had failed, someone had apparently settled for extinguishing it. Five hours before Train 9/13 came through Hamel, about 4:30 PM, the local track maintenance foreman had inspected the line. He reported the switch had been set correctly at the time but could not remember if the lamp was lit yet. It was fueled twice a week, having been topped off three days before.
The Suspect, the official Verdict, and the Aftermath. By the first of October railroad police were seeking a man known to peddle sewing needles door-to-door in the Hamel area. He was in his fifties, stoop-shouldered, an ‘eccentric dresser’ who wore a flap-eared cap. Local residents had noticed the man in the area of the siding earlier in the evening but thought nothing of it at the time. Police apparently failed to locate him, or cleared him of wrongdoing, as no further remarks on this suspect appear in the newspapers.
On December 17, 1958 the Interstate Commerce Commission officially rendered its report on the incident. After examining the crew, witnesses on the ground, passengers, and the incident scene itself, they concluded the crew was not at fault for the accident. The ICC official accident cause was listed as malicious tampering, by person or persons unknown, who had deliberately forced open the switch, changed its direction, and extinguished the indicating lamp. From the transportation safety end of things, it was case closed.
Engine 557 and 503B were returned to service, as did the injured employees. Rail traffic was disrupted for several weeks until the line could be fixed. Today, perhaps the last survivor is Engine 557, still operating in Hanska, Minnesota as Farmers Co-Op of Hanska No. 124.
Conclusion and Questions In 2023 it seems highly unlikely that the September 15, 1958 derailment will ever be solved. No one died, and the newspaper headlines of the day were occupied with the tragic Newark Bay bridge accident on the Central Railroad of New Jersey that killed 48, so it quietly slipped from memory. However, that does leave us with some room to speculate on the cause.
- The ICC Got It Wrong: There was no deliberate sabotage. Railroad locks take a beating even without deliberate tampering and investigators followed a path that would absolve the company and its employees of fault for incorrectly positioning the switch. The investigation makes no remark on when the switch had last been legitimately used before the accident.
- The Peddler: A convenient target. Marginalized and possibly without a home, as he is also described as ‘dirty-faced’, it would be convenient to latch onto a sighting of him near the switch as an explanation. We’re given little motivation to why he might have tampered with the switch. However, after examining several cases like this, there often doesn’t seem to be much motivation amongst those apprehended. Children playing around, wanting to see the train wreck, without any more information its hard to say much more.
- Someone Else: Local children, teens, another resident. Someone wanted to see the train crash. Notably someone had to wield a heavy tool against the switch lock and lamp bolts, no Lockpicking Lawyer here, which would seem to point towards an adult.

2023.06.07 20:26 Irishish How do we prevent resources like Trevor Project's anonymous chatrooms from being used by adults to discuss sexually explicit content with minors?
EDIT: I've been sold a bill of goods.
The Epoch Times of all places reports that what concerns me has been investigated and debunked.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Epoch Times on Oct. 18 the anti-human trafficking team investigated the complaint but found no criminal behavior in the TrevorSpace chatrooms. “The men and women that we have doing this are top of the line,” Bianco said. “They did their investigative work to get deeper into that space, and they found nothing.”
[...]
While Bianco understands parents are outraged, he said law enforcement agencies can’t base investigations or make arrests on moral grounds. “These parents, of course, they’re angry, and they should be angry,” he said, “but law enforcement has absolutely nothing to do with this other than looking into it to make sure there’s no criminal [activity]. There’s absolutely nothing criminal about that website or even having the chatrooms. This is no different than Facebook or Snapchat.”
It took getting into it
in the NRO comments before I found this, because the magazine—which while very biased is generally pretty open about its sources—did not give this context.

2023.06.07 19:15 ardyalligan Brick Wall: Parents of George Gresham
Hello,
I'm trying to get the Gresham portion of my family tree across the pond. However, I've been unable to find the parents of my 6th great grandfather, George Gresham. He was born 12 Jul 1700 in King & Queen County, Virginia, and died there in 1785. His spouse was Sarah Dveest Lowe Dunweddie, also of K&Q VA, born 1716 and died 1787. Together they had 12 children (11 sons, 1 daughter).
If anyone has any tips for researching K&Q records, such as they may be, I'd appreciate the help. I'm a member of a Facebook group that is attempting to match Gresham DNA, but none so far have gotten across the pond. TIA!

2023.06.07 18:54 rusticgorilla Georgia uses domestic terrorism law to suppress Cop City protests and community organization

Background: What is Cop City?
Cop city is a $90 million proposed training center for police officers. It would include a mock city, a helicopter pad, areas for explosives testing and high-speed vehicle chases, and new shooting ranges in 85 acres of the South River Forest (south of Atlanta, Georgia). Taxpayers will foot one-third of the bill, with the Atlanta Police Foundation funding the remaining $60 million.
The Atlanta Police Foundation, which is helping fund the project in an unincorporated part of DeKalb county, says on its website that it will have “the necessary facilities required to effectively train 21st-century law enforcement agencies responsible for public safety in a major urban city.”
Among the training features will be a burn tower for firefighters to practice extinguishing life-threatening blazes; areas for high-speed vehicle chases; a helicopter landing pad; a mock village including residential, school, nightlife and community areas, with structures such as a bank and a gas station; and a shooting range.
The project was approved by the city of Atlanta in September 2021 after 17 hours of public comment, 70% of which was against the training center.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said...that she is aware of widespread opposition to the recently-approved $90 million public safety training facility to be built of forested land, and it is unfortunate that the city “didn’t have anything else to choose from” in terms of other potential sites to build the sprawling facility.
Shortly after the city vote in late 2021, forest defenders and activists barricaded the area and took residence among the trees to prevent the forest from being demolished. The movement is largely described as leaderless and autonomous, with participants citing varied motivations:
“It’s sort of this ungoverned amorphous group of folks,” said Roddy. “Nobody's the boss. It’s really empowering to see how much a group of folks can accomplish together and to know that you can participate however feels empowering and feels comfortable to you.”
The protests have attracted people against the further militarization of the police, the destruction of green space and pollution of the environment, and the continuance of colonial policies (South River Forest was once Muscogee Creek Native American land).
Oppression
Though protests have taken place since the city approved the construction of Cop City, state officials began severely cracking down on activists over the past year.
Tortuguita
Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, became the face of Cop City resistance after Georgia State Patrol troopers shot and killed the activist. Paez Terán was a 26-year-old Indigenous Venezuelan and member of the queer community who took part in several social justice movements.
In an interview from an encampment in the Atlanta forest last year, a protester identified only as Tortuguita—Spanish for “little turtle”—explained how nonviolence would pave the way for them to successfully stop “Cop City,” a proposed $90 million police training facility slated to be built across 85-acres of dense woodland.
“We get a lot of support from people who live here, and that’s important because we win through nonviolence,” Tortuguita, who used they/them pronouns, told journalist David Peisner for a feature published in Bitter Southerner in December and updated this week. “We’re not going to beat them at violence.”
On January 18, 2023, officers raided the South River Forest encampment. According to the official police account, Paez Terán ignored their commands to exit a tent and pulled a gun, firing first at officers. A bullet allegedly from a gun in Paez Terán’s possession struck an officer in the pelvic area. The troopers then opened fire on Paez Terán, killing them.
There is no body camera recording of the shooting. However, Atlanta Police Department officers with body cameras were nearby in the forest, capturing snippets of conversation that suggest the wounded cop may have been hit by friendly fire.
Approximately 18 minutes into the video, four gunshots can be heard off-camera and one officer mutters, “Oh shit,” to himself. The group of Atlanta police officers immediately stop in their tracks, then another 16 shots ring out before there’s a barrage of noise—making it hard to make out individual shots. After approximately 12 seconds of shooting an officer can be heard muttering to himself, “Is this target practice?” Another officer turns and says, “Those are real shots being fired.”
Roughly a minute and 40 seconds after the first shot, the group starts to move ahead after some sort of audible signal. The officers are warned multiple times about crossfire.
One officer whispers quietly, “They’re shooting at us.”
“Nah, that sounded like suppressed gunfire.”
“Yeah, it did.”
An announcement over the radio confirms an officer was injured. A few seconds later, the officer wearing the body camera can be heard saying, “Man, you fucked your own officer up.” [...]
In the last two minutes as officers are seemingly winding down from the operation a conversation can be overheard.
“Did they shoot their own man?”
To which an officer replies, “We don’t know what he got shot by…” and the rest of what he says is hard to decipher. An officer responds and says, “The first one, they said, was suppressed.”
Further calling into question the official version of events, the DeKalb County coroner did not find gunpowder residue on Paez Terán’s hands. An independent autopsy determined that Paez Téran had been shot 14 times "by different firearms" with their hands raised while sitting cross-legged on the ground—again, inconsistent with the firing of a gun, though the autopsy report states “it is impossible to determine” if they were holding a firearm or not.
Arrests
At least 35 people have been arrested for protesting Cop City in recent months, charged with a controversial domestic terrorism provision of Georgia law.
In 2017, the Georgia state legislature changed the legal definition of domestic terrorism (Title 16, Chapter 11, Article 6). Instead of only criminalizing acts that are intended to or reasonably likely to kill or injure at least 10 people, the new definition includes certain property crimes intended to “change” government policy through “intimidation or coercion.”
ACLU: The amendment added a stigmatizing label and a harsher punishment — up to 35 years in prison — to property crimes that were already illegal, simply because of accompanying political expression critical of government policy. At the time of the amendment’s passing, the ACLU of Georgia and other civil rights groups objected that the statute could be weaponized to suppress protected First Amendment activity…As states have increasingly passed “domestic terrorism” laws, the result is that a range of at times wholly innocent or constitutionally protected activity is penalized and stigmatized with a politically-charged label.
In December 2022, five protesters were arrested for allegedly throwing rocks at police cars while officers tried to clear the forest. All were charged with domestic terrorism, four with criminal trespassing, three with aggravated assault, and two with interference with government property.
Seven more protesters were arrested in January, during the same raid that resulted in the murder of Paez Téran. All were charged with domestic terrorism and criminal trespassing. Following the arrests, Gov. Brian Kemp (R) called the protesters “militant activists” and said “we will bring the full force of state and local law enforcement down on those trying to bring about a radical agenda through violent means.”
Then, in March, police stormed a music festival organized by “Stop Cop City” activists and arrested 35 people. According to officials, some of the protesters had earlier set fire to a bulldozer and police ATV a mile away at the South River Forest construction site. Of the 35 people arrested, 23 charged with domestic terrorism, including a designated legal observer for the National Lawyers Guild. The police based the arrests on the fact that some protesters had muddy shoes in a forest.
The probable cause stated in the warrants against the activists is extremely weak. Police cited arrestees having mud on their shoes — in a forest. The warrants alleged they had written a legal support phone number on their arms, as is common during mass protests. And, in a few cases, police alleged protesters were holding shields — hardly proof of illegal activity — which a number of defendants even deny…
“Roughly 1,500 people attended over the weekend; to dance, to commune, and to take a stand against Cop City,” organizers of the music festival, the Sonic Defense Committee, told me. “There is no excuse for the police violence that festival attendees were subjected to.”
In April, police arrested three activists in Cartersville, about 40 miles north of Atlanta, for distributing flyers calling attention to the police killing of Paez Terán. The three were charged with felony intimidation of an officer of the state and misdemeanor stalking for sharing flyers that included the names of six officers involved in the shooting—information that was already made public by a different organization.
According to their lawyer, Lyra Foster, the activists drove once through the neighborhood and placed flyers on numerous mailboxes without exiting their vehicle or approaching any residents…All three arrestees are being held at Bartow County Jail; all were denied bond by a magistrate judge on Monday. None of the defendants has a criminal history, nor is there any allegation of violence in the current charges. “Denying them bond was extreme, in my opinion,” Foster said.
Finally, last week Atlanta police officers and agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested three people connected to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, which has paid bail and provided legal support for Cop City protesters. Video of the raid showed at least a dozen officers in riot gear with assault rifles raiding a community organizing house in East Atlanta. The three people arrested — Marlon Kautz, 39; Savannah Patterson, 30; and Adele MacLean, 42 — were charged with the felony crimes of charity fraud and money laundering, under the state’s tenuous theory that supporting protesters accused of domestic terrorism is, itself, a crime.
Lauren Regan, executive director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center, called the arrests an "extreme provocation" in a statement.
"Bailing out protestors who exercise their constitutionally protected rights is simply not a crime," Regan said. "In fact, it is a historically grounded tradition in the very same social and political movements that the city of Atlanta prides itself on. Someone had to bail out civil rights activists in the 60's — I think we can all agree that community support isn't a crime."
Gov. Kemp called the organizers “criminals”:
“These criminals facilitated and encouraged domestic terrorism with no regard for others, watching as communities faced the destructive consequences of their actions.” the Republican said. “Here in Georgia, we do not allow that to happen.”
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, also a Republican, pledged to “not rest until we have held accountable every person who has funded, organized, or participated in this violence and intimidation.”
The latest
The Atlanta City Council voted 11-4 to approve legislation to fund Cop City in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 6. More than 1,000 people signed up to speak during the 15-hour long session, which can be watched here. Many more community members were allegedly prevented from speaking after the city council cut off public comment signup.

2023.06.07 18:50 Justwonderinif Post Conviction II
< Friday, May 28, 2010 - Adnan could have filed for post conviction relief at any time during these past seven years, and did not have to wait ten years. Rabia lied about that.
- According to Rabia, Justin Brown has decided not to subpoena Asia, given her reaction when approached by the PI.
- Attoney Justin Brown files for Post Conviction Relief citing "Ineffective Assistance of Counsel" aka "IAC." This filing contains the first appearance of Asia's letters in the record.
- Syed asks for new trial, claiming trial counsel (Gutierrez), and appellate counsel (Warren Brown) were ineffective:
- 1) Gutierrez failed to establish a timeline disproving State's case
- 2) Gutierrez failed to investigate alibi witness (Asia)
- 3) Gutierrez failed to move for new trial based on Asia's statements
- 4) Gutierrez failed to cross-examine Debbie
- 5) Gutierrez failed to pursue a plea offer
- 6) Gutierrez failed to request a change of venue
- 7) Gutierrez failed to investigate Jay
- 8) In Adnan's appeal brief, Warren Brown failed to include the fact that Waranowitz strayed from his area of expertise, at trial.
- 9) Cumulative Ineffective Assistance of counsel.
- [Four years later, on October 18, and November 18, 2014, Rabia lied to the readers of her blog, writing that Adnan was forced to wait ten years to file for post conviction relief. The truth is the defendant has ten years from the date of conviction to file, but cannot file AFTER 10 years. In her book, Rabia wrote that she and Adnan knew all along that Adnan could file for post conviction relief the day after his appeal was denied in 2003]
- [Rabia also lies about how a 2013 google search led her to Sarah Koenig's coverage of Gutierrez' disbarment. Adnan's May 2010 filing for post conviction relief discusses Sarah Koenig's reporting. This is how Rabia would have become aware of Koenig.]
Sunday, June 27, 2010 - Adnan has been at Cumberland / Supermax for one year.
June 27, 2010 - Justin Brown files a Supplement to Adnan's May 28, 2010 Petition for Post Conviction Relief. Cites a 10th point for PCR.
- 10) Sentencing counsel, Charles Dorsey, failed to request that the motion for sentence modification be held in abeyance.
After Syed fired Gutierrez, he was represented by a public defender, Charles Dorsey. Mr. Dorsey filed a Motion for Modification of Sentence. Mr. Syed had just received a sentence of life plus 30 years. Rather than ask the Court to hold that motion in advance and raise it after, up to ten years, which is the common practice when a defendant receives a very long sentence, Mr. Dorsey didn't do that. The court ended up ruling on the Motion for Modification a couple of days after it was filed. And, of course, the motion was denied. So that's our third, ineffective assistance of counsel claim. That he should have handled that differently. - The supplement also included further points Justin Brown wanted to make about Gutierrez's failure to ask for a pleas deal.
No copies of this supplement exist on the internet. July 27, 2010 Summer 2010 - According to transcripts, Justin Brown attempts to subpoena Asia. (This could be the reason for one of the postponements.)
Friday, October 15, 2010 - Hae Min Lee 30th birthday
November 29, 2010 Friday, December 20, 2010 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. First postponement.
February 28, 2011 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for twelve years.
Saturday, May 21, 2011 June, 2011 Thursday, June 9, 2011 Monday, August 8, 2011 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Second postponement.
Thursday, September 29, 2011 - Adnan moves to disqualify Kathleen Murphy as counsel for the state.
Saturday, October 15, 2011 - Hae Min Lee 31st birthday
Thursday, October 20, 2011 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Third postponement.
November 27, 2011 January, 2012 - Rabia founds the "Safe Nation Collaborative." Unfortunately, law enforcement has never heard of it.
Monday, February 6, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Fourth postponement.
- Adnan's motion to disqualify Kathleen Murphy is denied.
- Murphy says she first spoke to Urick about testifying at the PCR in February 2012
Tuesday, March 6, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Fifth postponement.
February 28, 2012 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for thirteen years.
March 21, 2012 - Supreme Court Decisions [Lafler & Frye] re; Defense Attorney's obligation to seek plea deal
Monday, May 21, 2012 Friday, June 15, 2012 July 13, 2012 Thursday, July 26, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Sixth postponement.
Thursday, August 9, 2012 - PCR Hearing scheduled, but postponed. Seventh postponement.
Thursday, October 11, 2012 - Transcripts: for Evidentiary Hearing in Post-Conviction Appeal.
- (Shamim's and Rabia's testimony filed and paid for by stop_saying_right after Rabia refused to upload anything but Urick's testimony.)
- Justin Brown opens. He will focus on (3) issues.
- Gutierrez's failure to investigate Asia.
- Gutierrez's failure to pursue a plea offer.
- Dorsey's failure to request that the motion for sentence modification be held in abeyance.
- Kevin Urick testifies:
- Gutierrez never approached him seeking a plea bargain. If he had been approached, there would have been a possibility of a negotiated disposition.
- Asia called him because she was afraid of being forced to testify. She had already made up her mind not to testify when she called Urick. And only called him looking for a way to get out of it.
- Shamim Rahman testifies: Posted and discussed on reddit thanks to SSR.
- Rabia Chaudry testifies: Posted and discussed on reddit thanks to SSR.
Monday, October 15, 2012 - Hae Min Lee 32nd birthday
Thursday, October 25, 2012 - Transcripts: for Evidentiary Hearing in Post-Conviction Appeal.
- (Adnan and Meady's testimony filed and paid for by stop_saying_right after Rabia refused to upload anything but Urick's testimony.)
- Adnan Syed testifies. Posted and discussed on reddit thanks for SSR.
- Adnan testifies that he told Dorsey about Asia, but there is no mention of Asia's letters, or giving Dorsey Asia's letters.
- Margaret Meady testifies
- Justin Brown fails to call Andrew Davis, the Private Investigator hired by Flohr and Colbert to investigate the library/track alibi.
February 28, 2013 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for fourteen years.
Tuesday, May 21, 2013 June 11, 2013 August, 2013 - It has been ten months since the October 2012 Hearing for Post Conviction Relief.
- Rabia says she watched the documentary "West of Memphis," looked up reporters who covered Gutierrez's disbarment, and found Sarah Koenig. Rabia hoped that media attention could influence Welch's pending decision, ten months after the hearing.
- Rabia is lying when she talks about this 2013 google search that led her to Sarah Koenig's coverage of Gutierrez' disbarment for the Baltimore Sun. The truth is that Adnan's May 2010 filing for post conviction relief discusses Sarah Koenig and the coverage in the Baltimore Sun. This is how Rabia would have become aware of Koneig. Not via an August 2013 random google search, after watching West of Memphis.
August 12, 2013 - Rabia sends a letter to Sarah Koenig, asking her to take a look at the case. Rabia claims the police and prosecutors knew Adnan was innocent, and Gutierrez threw the case for money. Note here that leading up to Serial, Rabia was convinced that Jay did it, and would have pitched the story, with the carrot of exposing Jay.
August 29, 2013 - Rabia hastily sets up an LLC in Maryland, even though she is not licensed to practice law there.
- In anticipation of meeting with Sarah Koenig, Rabia sets up an office at Security Plaza, across the street from Woodlawn High School.
- Rabia wants Sarah to think this has always been her office, and that this is where she works. The truth is Rabia lives and works in DC.
August 30, 2013 Late September, 2013 - Adnan receives a letter from Justin Brown saying that a reporter named Sarah Koenig wanted to do an interview. Justin wrote that he didn't think Sarah would waste time on a story if she didn't believe Adnan was innocent. Adnan receives the first letter from Sarah Koenig, a few days later.
Thursday, October 10, 2013 - By now, Adnan has received an introductory letter from Sarah Koenig. She sent him a pad and pencil and stamps. Adnan writes Sarah Koenig a letter about his story and case. Discussion. - [will update link soon]
- Adnan says he wasn't much bigger than Hae.
- Adnan says that students weren't allowed to use the top parking lot. (several WHSers and Krista have said that students used the top parking lot.)
- Adnan describes the route to the Best Buy but neglects to mention the back way.
- Adnan implies that the October 31 break up was the final break up.
- Adnan says that he and Hae would joke about two women calling him on his cell phone at the same time. (Only we know that Adnan's first, ever cell phone was activated the evening of January 12, and there are no calls on the call log that support this story.)
Tuesday, October 15, 2013 - Hae Min Lee 33rd birthday
November, 2013 - Sarah Koenig meets with Chris Flohr to try to get some sense of Adnan's innocence. She tells Flohr that she won't do the story unless Adnan is innocent. Jay as the killer is context for Koenig's work on Serial.
Wednesday, November 13, 2013 Tuesday, November 19, 2013 - Adnan receives a reply letter from Sarah Koenig and puts her on his visitor list. Sarah has decided to report on the story.
Monday, November 25, 2013 - Adnan writes Sarah Koenig to thank her for her letter and let her know she is on his visitor list.
Monday, December 30, 2013 - Post Conviction Decision written by Justice Martin P. Welch.
January 2, 2014 - Andrew Davis in a single car accident, that proves fatal.
Tuesday, January 6, 2014 Mid January, 2014 - Koenig says that her first conversation with Adnan took place right after he received Welch's decision. Link to excerpt from first recorded interview
- Asia returns Sarah Koenig's call. Asia tells Sarah that when she was approached by the Defense PI, she "freaked out" and called Urick, who told her Adnan was guilty, so she dodged the attempt to produce her at the PCR.
- Bilal is notified of disciplinary action regarding his dental license, citing un-necessary treatments and overcharging on multiple occasions in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Monday, January 27, 2014 - Defense files ALA (Applicaton for Leave to Appeal). Adnan's attorneys have to ask for permission to appeal Welch's decision, as there is no guaranteed right to appeal. Defense requests review of two issues:
- 1) Whether Gutierrez was ineffective because she didn't contact/interview Asia
- 2) Whether Gutierrez was ineffective for failing to pursue a plea deal, and telling Adnan she had.
Monday, February 17, 2014 Late February, 2014 - Sarah has met with Deirdre Enright who has agreed to work on Adnan's case.
- Two UVA law school clinics begin work on Adnan's case.
- Rabia says that Sarah reached out to Dierdre on her own. But it's clear that Adnan told Sarah about the Justin Wolfe case and subsequently, Deirdre Enright.
- DNA issue important to law student, Mario
February 28, 2014 - Adnan has been in jail/prison for fifteen years.
Late February/March 2014 - Justin George of the Baltimore Sun begins helping Sarah Koenig, at Rabia's urging. Rabia wanted a local reporter on the story, too.
Spring, 2014 - Approximate: Sarah emails Young Lee
- Approximate: Sarah interviews one of the prosecuting attorneys, Kathleen Murphy, for two hours
- Sarah and Dana Chivas visit Woodlawn, and surrounding areas:
- Krista shows them her scrapbook, lets them read Adnan's letters, and see her photos of Hae.
- Sarah and Dana Chivas do the drive test that Adnan asked Sarah to do. Rabia asks to go along. Sarah says no.
- Sarah shows Rabia the Enehey Report from the MPIA file. Rabia had never seen it. Sarah has redacted the name of the author of the report. She has promised the author she wouldn't reveal her name. Later, Rabia would post the report on her blog, and tell the world the name of the woman who wrote the report.
- Rabia says in her book that this report explained why the detectives focused in on Adnan. She leaves out that the report was not written until Adnan had been in jail for six months.
- Rabia dates the report as August 24, 1999, without mentioning that by then, Adnan had been arrested, indicted, and awaiting trial for months. (Later, Rabia would say that Justin Brown had a copy of the report in the police file, but never showed it to her.
- Adnan sends Sarah Koenig two "Price of Tea" charts, and asks her to hold them until the next time they speak. In October, of 2014, Koenig wrote about the subsequent conversation here.
Wednesday, May 21, 2014 May 31, 2014 June 4, 2014 July 25, 2014 Thursday, August 7, 2014 - Sarah and Julie fly to California, two weeks after the original air date for the podcast. Jay wouldn't talk to them on the phone, so they delayed the podcast, and flew to California to blind-side Jay.
Friday, August 8, 2014 - Sarah and Julie arrive at Jay's house. No one is home. They go away, then come back, for the second time, to walk across his lawn, unannounced.
- Jay said this upset his children.
- During the conversation, Jay refers to himself as a "scoundrel with scruples." Jay wisely doesn't see any upside to letting them record an interview.
Saturday, August 9, 2014 - Sarah Koenig emails Jay, apologizes for blind-siding him and causing upheaval, suggests they have a drink or coffee, and refers to the project she's working on as a documentary, not a podcast. Sarah tells Jay that the upside to doing a taped interview is that he can tell his version. Her message: "I'm going to do a story and talk about you, whether you like it or not."
August 2014 Wednesday, September 10, 2014 - Maryland Court of Special Appeals orders the State of Maryland to file a response to the defense's January 27, 2014 "ALA" (Application for Leave to Appeal). Court asks for State's response to the defense's assertion that Adnan asked for a plea, and Gutierrez failed to seek one. Court sets deadline of November 14, 2014 for State's response
September 2014 Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - Sarah writes to Rabia that the story will be presented in podcast form, over 12 episodes.
Friday, October 3, 2014 Saturday, October 4. 2014 Wednesday, October 8, 2014 Saturday, October 11, 2014 Friday, October 14, 2014 Wedneday, October 15, 2014 - Hae Min Lee 34th birthday

2023.06.07 18:25 SabbyOfSableWine A human-averse alien visits his sister to check up on her after an attack--and her human mate answers the door
This is part of my little series about the adventures of Vr'ocria and Human Aldrick. If you'd like to read previous parts, they're linked below, along with brief summaries in case you prefer to just jump right into the new part: Part One: Alien learns what "sleep" is and how humans prefer to do it in a comfy bed with blankets and pillows. And they find it utterly adorable. Vr'ocria and Human Aldrick are sent on a survey mission together. Things go south, Aldrick makes sure they're safe, and then Vr'ocria learns what human sleep is and how vulnerable humans are when they sleep. Vr'ocria's people don't sleep, but enter stasis, a form of rest in which they typically stand, and they are still slightly aware of their surroundings. Vr'ocria finds human sleep utterly adorable, and also decides she will protect Aldrick while he sleeps. And she also develops a massive crush on him. (Her scales turning purple is her version of blushing) Part Two: An alien + human adventure with such shenanigans as poison drinking, befriending dangerous wildlife, and fighting a space pirate. Oh, and they have a huge crush on each other. Part Three: When a cold-blooded alien has to cuddle a warm-blooded human for warmth Part Four: A human leaves a hickey on his alien lover. Her nestmate doesn't understand what a hickey is, and thinks the human injured her Vr'ocria and Human Aldrick end up assigned to be partners. Vr'ocria is a witness to both human shenanigans as well as human durability, but she also begins to learn about the limits of the human body--they are not invincible. She and Aldrick begin to fall in love, and they finally confess their feelings for one another when Vr'ocria admits to accidentally forming a mate bond with him. Vr'ocria's nestmate, Galek, is not very happy about her being involved with a human, but begrudgingly respects her decision. Part Five: Space pirates make the grave mistake of attacking a human's loved one. They very quickly learn what happens when a human is angry and full of adrenaline Part Six: An alien who doesn't sleep learns what dreams are–or more specifically, she learns about nightmares when her human mate wakes up screaming Pirates come for Vr'ocria in revenge for her killing one of their own, and Aldrick goes beast mode. They escape with their lives, but also with questions about how the pirates were able to find them–and they begin to suspect there's a mole in the ship. While Aldrick is recovering from his injuries, Vr'ocria learns what dreams are when she witnesses him having a terrible nightmare. Part Seven: Alien is stunned to learn that humans recreationally drink alcohol, specifically to experience the effects of being poisoned. Her human offers to get drunk. Purely for scientific observation, of course Aldrick is still on doctor's orders to rest, but he's bored, and Vr'ocria finds out he drinks sometimes. She's shocked but fascinated, and he gets drunk so she can see what it's like. Turns out, he's a very mushy, lovey drunk. Onto the story! "Planets, I'm so stupid," Vr'ocria groaned. She straightened and put her hands on her hips, casting her eyes around the room. She was in her quarters looking for her scanner, and Aldrick was across the room helping her.
"You're not stupid." He stood up from where he'd been searching under the couch. "We've had an insane couple of weeks, it's understandable that you misplaced it."
She rubbed her eyes. "I know, it's just so tedious having to request a new one. Too much paperwork, and I'll have to fix all the settings, and ugh."
"It's around here somewhere," he said as he started pulling up the couch cushions. "We'll find it."
The design of Vr'ocria's quarters was almost the exact same as Aldrick's: plain white walls, gray carpeting, neutral furnishings, and a wall of windows to break up the blandness of the space. However, she had a stasis chamber in the corner, rather than a bedroom, and while Aldrick had decorated his place, hers was still rather sparse. She'd only been assigned to live on the ship fairly recently, and she'd had little time to settle into her new home before she was being sent on frequent away missions.
All as well, though. She'd basically been living with Aldrick ever since they mated, and by now she mostly used her assigned quarters as a storage room. Somehow, she didn't even miss using the stasis chamber anymore. The chamber was meant to be a warm, dark, and quiet place for her to enter stasis at night, but Aldrick's bedroom was an easy replacement.
"No scanner," Aldrick reported as he put the couch back together.
Vr'ocria cursed. "I don't have a clue what could've happened to it."
"And you already checked the safe next to your stasis chamber?"
"Yeah. I mean, I guess I could double check just in case…"
The door chimed.
"Do you mind getting that?" Vr'ocria asked as she pulled open the safe.
"Sure." Her back was turned, but she heard Aldrick's footsteps as he went to the door and opened it. She continued rummaging through her things.
"You." Vr'ocria barely had time to register the familiar voice before there was a smack, a grunt of pain and a
thud, all in rapid succession. She whirled around to see Aldrick lying on the floor–and her nestmate, Galek, standing in the door with his fist in the air, scales bright yellow and standing on end.
"Galek!" She yelled, running to Aldrick. Thankfully, he seemed more dazed than he was hurt, and was already climbing back to his feet. There was a red welt forming below his left eye.
Vr'ocria put herself between them, staring daggers at Galek. "What were you thinking?" She demanded shrilly.
He looked surprised, and somewhat relieved to see her. "Are you okay?" He asked, lowering his hand.
"I'm fine," she snarled as she grabbed the front of his shirt and yanked him inside before they started making a scene in the corridor. "You blasted
gl'ach." Their mother tongue took over and her old childhood insult for him slipped out.
Aldrick had backed up until he was several feet away, standing awkwardly like he wasn't quite sure what to do with himself. He kept a wary eye on Galek, but otherwise made no move to speak or lash out.
Once they were all inside, Vr'ocria slammed the touchpad to close the door. Galek was staring back at Aldrick, flexing his hands at his sides. She moved so that she was in between them again, blocking Galek's line of sight. Like him, her scales were yellow and standing on end. "Why did you do that?"
"I came as soon as I got your message," he explained, looking at her like
she was the crazy one. "Last I heard you'd been attacked by pirates, then I come to your quarters to check on you and
he answers the door."
"He's my mate!" She was trying not to shout, but failing. "You know this!"
Slowly, Galek's scales faded to green and lowered back down, although he kept flexing his hands.
Vr'ocria's communicator chimed. She ignored it.
"Apologize!" She ordered, one fist planted on her hip and the other pointing to Aldrick. Her communicator chimed again.
Galek slowly turned to Aldrick. He pursed his lips. "I am…sorry," he ground out.
Bling, the communicator sang for the third time.
Vr'ocria snatched it out of her pocket and raised it to her ear. "What?" She snapped.
"Vr'ocria!," The voice on the other end squeaked.
"I need your help–I messed up the map maker and I'm trying to fix it but Lieutenant Prax is on his way and he's going to kill
me and I'm freaking out–" "Lekot, I'm sorry, but this isn't a good time–"
"Please!" Lekot begged,
"it'll only take five minutes, I just need you to walk me through how to recalibrate the system! I'll owe you one, I promise!" Vr'ocria chewed her lip as she watched Aldrick and Galek continue to stare at each other.
"Ugh, fine," she sighed. "You two
behave," she pointed at them with a glare. "I need to step out for two seconds. I better not come back to carnage."
They nodded stiffly, and Vr'ocria reluctantly stepped out into the hallway. "Alright Lekot, the first thing you need to do is open the settings…"
—
Aldrick's cheek pounded. It'd be a miracle if he didn't get a black eye from this.
Galek wasn't the signature yellow of an angry Ethyrian anymore, but his eyes were still boring holes into Aldrick.
Aldrick was the first to finally speak. "Not exactly how I wanted our first meeting to go." He trailed to the couch and sat down, gently touching the hot red welt just under his eye. "I'm sorry for startling you at the door."
Galek's lips were still pursed. He ground his jaw as if he was chewing over Aldrick's attempt at a peace offering, and Aldrick prayed he wasn't about to get tackled.
His stomach clenched when Galek began approaching, and he braced for a fight.
Galek stiffly sank down onto the cushion at the opposite end of the couch.
Aldrick blinked.
Okay, maybe I'm not dying today. He could see the familial similarities. Both Vr'ocria and Galek were the same shade of emerald green, and they had the same sharp noses and strong cheekbones. Even the tightness around his eyes looked the same as Vr'ocria when she was stressed.
"I…" Galek cleared his throat, refusing to make eye contact. "I do truly apologize," he finally managed. "I was only concerned for Vr'ocria's safety."
The corner of Aldrick's mouth curved upwards. "I know."
Galek finally turned to meet his gaze. "You understand that humans have a certain…
reputation, yes?"
Aldrick closed his eyes and nodded. "I do."
"So you understand why I have reservations about you mating her."
It wasn't a question. Aldrick nodded again. "Yes."
They sat in silence for a moment.
"Vr'ocria tells me you saved her life when those pirates attacked."
Aldrick blushed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, I guess I did." He shrugged. "I love her. I'd do anything to keep her from getting hurt."
"Me too."
Aldrick gave him a sideways glance.
Galek tapped his fingers on his thigh. "And that includes…" he cleared his throat again. "Not harming her mate."
Aldrick gave a rueful smile. "Does that mean you won't punch me again?"
Galek flushed purple.
Aldrick couldn't help chuckling. He leaned forward to rest his forearms on his knees. "Have you ever heard of the concept of a 'brother-in-law'?"
Galek shook his head.
"'Brothers' are what humans call male nestmates; 'sisters' are female," he began. "When humans marry–that's sort of our version of mating–we believe that their family becomes your family. They're called in-laws. Mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and on and on. Anyway, what I'm getting at is that if we were on Earth, I would call you my brother-in-law." He met Galek's eye. "I know asking us to be brothers is probably too much…but I'd at least like for us to be friends."
Galek's eyes widened slightly. His fingers fidgeted the hem of his sleeve, his gaze never leaving Aldrick, who waited with bated breath.
Did I overstep? Galek rose to his feet and moved to stand in front of him. Aldrick stood as well so that they were eye-to-eye.
Galek stuck his hand out.
Aldrick blinked.
"I would…" Galek ground his jaw again. "I would be open to becoming your…friend."
Slowly, a smile bloomed across Aldrick's face. He took Galek's hand and shook it. The Ethyrian's gaze softened by a fraction, and Aldrick dared to hope that one day they might actually become good friends.
The front door opened and Vr'ocria entered, communicator in hand. "Crisis averted, and Lekot even found my scanner in the break room–" she came to a halt as she laid eyes on them. "Uh…everything okay?"
The two of them released the handshake, turning to face her. "Everything's good," Aldrick grinned. Galek didn't quite smile, but he shoved his hands in his pockets and was visibly more relaxed than he was a few minutes ago.
"...Good." She looked as though she wasn't sure how to react. "So, no fighting, right?" She gave her brother a pointed look.
An amused expression crossed Galek's face. "Only with you,
fr'iya." That made Vr'ocria chuckle. "I'm bigger now, I can beat you." She walked over and collapsed into the center of the couch. Aldrick and Galek sat back down on either side of her.
"You'll never win," Galek said, poking her side.
She smacked his hand. "I have practice wrestling Aldrick," she teased.
Galek's eyes widened, and her scales flashed deep purple. "Not like that! I mean, we've done
that, but–oh moons, forget I said anything."
Aldrick flushed beet red, covering his face with his hands. "I gotta go," he choked out, jumping up. "I'm just gonna–you guys catch up, I'm gonna go–" he bounded towards the door.
"Love you!" Vr'ocria called behind him, laughing.
Another more lighthearted chapter! I want to do a mix of heavier themes with gentler ones. I'm a SLUT for angst, but my children deserve happiness too. I figured it was finally time for Aldrick to officially meet Galek. I took some care with this chapter because protective siblings are great, but I hate the protective fathebrother trope when it comes from a place of misogyny and a sense of ownership over the daughtesister, rather than genuine concern for her physical and emotional well-being. I've seen that a lot in media and it's fucking gross. Oh, and Vr'ocria will eventually meet Aldrick's family as well, don't worry :) THANK YOU for reading! Until next time! submitted by

The rain or shine, family friendly event (but bring earplugs) will feature 7 bands and one DJ who will be spinning intermittently throughout the day. “What makes this year different from the others is that we’ve expanded our circle as far as the entertainment goes. As opposed to primarily booking local bands, we’re happy to be hosting The Dracu-Las from Brooklyn, The Ravagers from Baltimore, and Decent Criminal from Northern CA” says Dan Haag, who along with LoFi owners, Jesse Weeks and Kent Baker, is coconspirator of the festival. But not to worry, for those who follow the ever-blooming Hudson County music scene, there will still be plenty of local talent. Roots Reggae artist, Alex Tea will kick things off, followed by power-pop crooner, Jonny Couch; Kearney’s, Secret Country and their high-energy bar-band country punk will follow; and at the end of the night, Wydlife will bring their 70's-stylized punk/rock 'n' roll and take their foretold place in local lore as headliner. 2023.06.07 17:55 bandit_2017 Do I need more documentation for my non-naturalization case?
My appointment is in Chicago in 22 months. I currently have the following citizenship documentation for my ancestor (not talking about vital docs here - that is a separate topic):
- USCIS CONE
- NARA letter of no record
- County letter of no record
- 1905 & 1910 census documents listed as an alien
According to the guide that Chicago puts out, this should be enough. However, I've seen multiple cases on the Facebook group where someone is told that they need additional information. In my situation, there is no ship log, no additional census documents, no declaration of intent, no A-File / draft cards (he died before WWI), and death certificates at the time did not list citizenship.
Should I be worried? People tend to say that Chicago is a bit more lenient than say, Houston when it comes to this type of thing but I want to be sure.

2023.06.07 17:40 IridiumIO In light of the recent information on infected Minecraft Mods: How to check if your Windows PC has been infected.
More information in
this post by JWGardiner and the
ongoing HackMD documentation page tldr; If you have downloaded any mods within the last few weeks (Curseforge is the one that's getting all the attention, but it's still possible that Modrinth and other sources had compromised mods too) then there's a chance you've been infected by malware that attempts to (among other things) steal user credentials and browser data, intercept cryptocurrency addresses and spread itself amongst other java .jar files on your computer.
Step One is to follow the steps here to see if you're
definitely infected:
https://prismlauncher.org/news/cf-compromised-alert/#manual-check - Either follow the manual steps, or download the automated powershell script. Instructions for both are well-detailed on that page.
Step Two is whether or not you are infected as above, do the following to check if you're still at risk. This is because the original remote server that the malware connects to has been disabled but there is still the risk that it reactivates or there is additional shenanigans that haven't been caught yet that could be buried deeper.
Work has begun on a detector for the obvious infection stages; the important part to note is that if
one mod on your computer has been infected, potentially all
.jar files (not just mods, but at this stage it seems to be targeting anything related to Minecraft/Forge/Fabric/Bukkit) on your system could be infected.
Windows Defender and other antiviruses pretty much do not detect this.
An infection detector has started being made; the source is available on Github here.
It is still heavily in development (obviously) but if you want to scan your system now you can follow these steps (and as the detector gets updated, just repeat the steps). I'm sure they'll release a standalone compiled .jar file but for now you should build it from source until that's available (I cannot stress how easy it would be for someone to share an infected .jar file with you, given the current environment just build it yourself; it's really easy).
The steps below are grossly inflated just to make it easier for anyone who doesn't know one of the smaller steps. Don't be put off by the number of steps here, the whole thing could be 3 steps long but there will be people who don't know how to open powershell for example, so these steps include everything. If you already know how to use Gradle to build a jar file from source, you're good to go.
Note that because you're building from source, you should expect there to be bugs. I'd probably say if you don't know what you're doing, just wait until a release .jar is published. If you're unfazed, read on.
How to use the code to scan your computer: - Head to the Github page and click the green button at the top that shows <> Code and choose the Download ZIP option
- Download and extract it to an easy to access location - a folder on the Desktop will do.
- Open this folder and you should see a few folders and files, notably including gradlew.bat and gradle.
- Run gradlew.bat. You will almost certainly get a warning from Windows saying it's potentially unsafe (because it's a downloaded executable). Just hit continue anyway.
- Once it is complete, open a Terminal or Powershell (or command prompt) window in that same folder. There are a few ways to do this:
- Right click anywhere in the folder's empty space, and click Open in Terminal
- Shift+Right click anywhere and click Open Powershell Window here
- Open powershell from your start menu, then type cd "PATH TO FOLDER"
- In this window (assuming you're using powershell), type .\gradlew build
- A new folder should appear called build - open this folder, then open the libs folder within.
- Check that it contains a file called jarscaner-x.x-SNAPSHOT.jar or something like that (there is a typo, I know)
- Repeat step 5 to open a new terminal window here.
- Type in java -jar .\jarscaner-WHATEVERITISNAMED.jar 4 "C:\"
- Replace the number 4 with the number of threads you want the scanner to use. If you don't know what that means, leave it at 4.
- You should ideally run the scan on every drive on your PC entirely. This will take a long time. If - like me - you want a quick and dirty check, you can replace the C:\ with the path of your appdata folder so it just scans that. You cannot use "%appdata%" as a shortcut, type the full path out e.g. "C:/Users/JohnW/AppData"
- Wait for it to finish
Note that because this is early development, there are errors (and places where errors should be, but aren't).
This will also only notify you if you are almost certainly infected. If it says you're infected, you probably are. If it doesn't say you're infected - and you have downloaded mods in the last few weeks - then you still could be infected. It is specific, but not sensitive.
For me, I get an error:
Failed to scan: Terralith_v2.2.3.jar
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException
Even I don't know what this means. No idea why the class would be invalid. The rest of the scan still completes though.
Keep an eye on the GitHub page; you'll be able to see when new versions are submitted, and ideally you should re-run the tool when it's updated as the devs will be including more checks as the malware's functionality gets better understood.

2023.06.07 17:40 Shirogitsune09 I’d like to share a story about how being a milk man was the second worst job I’ve ever had
So, to set the scene here: I was homeless at the time and was desperate for any source of income. This was in 2018, and work was steady enough to be found rather quickly in the area I was living in. I get a call back after a few days of applying, and it’s a job as a milkman for a local dairy depot. The pay isn’t by the hour, it’s $125 a day, and there are absolutely no benefits and no time off. I knew going into it that it wasn’t a good deal, but we’ll touch more on why later.
I was crashing in a family friend’s fifth wheel for the time being, and unfortunately, said friend’s camper was roughly an hour away up into the mountains from where the job was located, and my shifts were from 9 at night until I finished the job, which typically took 12-14 hours. (The employer knew this, which is why they paid “by the day” instead of by the hour. $125 is less than minimum wage when spread over 14 hours and it was a legal loophole for them to pay less.) This meant that I would spend two hours a day driving to and from work, on top of driving all night for work. This probably sounds bad already, but I was truly in a worst case scenario position and if I didn’t grab a source of income, I could’ve lost everything I had left. So, reluctantly and begrudgingly, I took the job.
This is where I wish the story ended. But no. Oh no no no. The working conditions and manager for this place made Jeff Bezos look like Mother Goose. I’ll gloss over the setup details for the job: you clock in and get your route. Company favorites would only have 100-150 houses to do a night, while the new hire cannon fodder like me would have to hit 400-500 a night in locations that were usually at least an hour away from the depot, just in case I wasn’t driving enough already. You would go pick up a box truck. The trucks had no cooling or refrigeration, so you would have to drive over to the “Ice Box,” which was a giant tank full of ice, grab a shovel, and chip and scoop out enough ice to fill the back of your truck. After that, you would drive over to the depot bay, load your food and drinks (we didn’t just do milk: bread, cheese, green chili, we did a whole variety. More on that later.)
Now, with all your product loaded and cooled, let’s talk about rules and guidelines and potential violations before you start your wonderful dairy delivering departure. The company had more penalties listed every night for deliveries than they had employees. If your load was out of temperature? You had to buy all the products in the truck out of your paycheck, no discount. If the truck got stuck somewhere or broke down? You had to pay to have it towed out of your own paycheck. Any deliveries aren’t delivered in full due to lack of product? You’re not gonna believe who’s paycheck that’s coming out of. All of this for a job paying less than minimum wage for 12+ hours of extremely physical and manual labor. But now, for the main event: let’s talk about the job.
Your job is as follows: you drive to house, you grab order, you run order to house, then run back and check it off the scanner. But wait. It’s not that simple. Because it’s never that simple. Most of these houses are owned by ultra rich ultra snobby assholes who don’t want you to drive your filthy peasant truck onto their luxurious driveway. These same people also would order 8 gallons of milk at a time, along with cheese, bagels, bread, and god only knows what else. The coup de grace, I mean the big dingleberry cherry on this shit sundae, is that company guidelines say you’re not allowed to walk while delivering. No matter how much you’re carrying, no matter how long this rich asshole’s quarter milk long driveway is, you run that order, rain or shine. 400+ houses. Massive orders. No pulling up the driveway. Even in the freezing pouring rain. At 2 AM.
Sound bad enough to quit? Well hold on now campers, because I’m not done yet. We haven’t talked about my trainer. We’ll call him Bill. Bill was so burnt out and dead inside he just did this all unblinkingly. He seemed fine enough, until I asked him about using the bathroom or taking a break over the course of the shift. No breaks allowed. If you stop to poop, the company will log it and deduct your idle time. Then, he says if you need to pee, there’s a hole in the truck. He gets up out of the driver seat, climbs the small barrier into the back where we keep the ice and product, and starts pissing on the floor by a little drainage hole for the melted ice. At this point, I’ve decided I’m done.
There’s just one last hurdle, truly the final boss: telling my entitled cheap ass slave driving boomer boss. After a week of grueling work and little to no compensation, I go into the boss’ office and tell him I quit. He goes ballistic, screaming and berating me and pounding on his desk. He screams about how he spent $5000 on my training (I spent a week working and they gave me a hat and shirt. The hat and shirt were not $2500 worth of quality between them, so I’m calling bullshit.) After his temper tantrum, he refuses to speak to me any further about the job, and just keeps screaming for me to leave. About a week later I got my check for my week of hell.
Moral of the story kids: don’t be a milk man.
