Help needed in Northern NJ. Sorry for the long read.
Help needed!! Thought this year was going to be my best year on record but quickly turning into the worst. Let me recap the season:
-Dethatched, aerated and reseeded last fall -No winter pre emergent, regretfully -Soil Test showed low in nitrogen, potassium, sulfur, and iron -Mid April, Pre Emergent with Lawn Food and Yard Master flag ship app at same time but separate passes. - A month later, Laid down a liquid K at rate + Laid down a liquid N 25-0-0 at rate a week after that. -New(ish) mower this year, Honda HRX with hopes to end my bagging. First few mows I bagged and then switched to mulching for the first time since owning the property. Mow at 4 inches every 3-4 days. -Milo right before MDW. -Disease X at a little over the preventive rate last week(scared to make things worse by going too heavy?)
Notes: had clover, white clover and speedwell all spring and still in some areas which I’ve been treating lightly via spot treatment of speed zone. Never had weeds prior seasons.
Stepping on the grass, it doesn’t recover quickly.
Thoughts on issues: -Laid down too much N which led to Disease/Fungus. Too much product overall. -Iron Chlorosus (not sure if I need to address directly or if all my other apps solved this?) -Mower blades were too dull. Don’t think they were though since they were brand new - Dry spring (got my above ground setup going 2 weeks ago). Did a few intermittent hose watering a prior as needed. -Seed was JG. May have had KBG or Poa which is dying out
I used to just throw down some milo and that was it -my lawn looked the best it did when I did that. Now I think I’ve over thought everything.

2023.06.06 02:45 Holiday-Walk-7264 This is my new spark plug after cutting roughly an acre. Also seemed to have burned off some oil, but there was no smoke or leak. Mower ran great. 6 year old mower. Air filter looks fine. What could be the cause?

2023.06.06 00:35 Marcbmann Feedback on My Plan to Restart Lawn?

Hey all,
So, I am in zone 7a. My soil is about 76% sand, so high drainage. It's getting late in the season, but I'm a new homeowner and kinda scrambling to get things done. And I'm on a tighter budget.
  1. My lawn is all weeds. Like, basically no grass. And courtesy of the insanely high drainage in my "soil", everything died the moment the temperature hit 75 degrees. So I have a dead lawn that is almost entirely weeds. Yay.
  2. So, going to start off by scalping the lawn and killing everything with roundup first. I have a riding mower with the bins in the back to collect trimmings.
  3. I plan on just addressing the front of my house. That's an area of about 5,000 square feet. So, I'm trucking in about 20 yards of a 1:1 mix of top soil and compost and spreading it evenly over the area. Then tilling the entire area to work the fresh soil and compost into the top layer of my dead lawn.
  4. I'll then put down 45lbs of GCI Cool Blue. It seems like this type of grass is drought resistant and will put down long roots if taken care of.
  5. Finish off by putting down Milorganite 4 weeks later. Slow release should help considering the high drainage.
And for spreading seed and fertilizer, I'll grab the Echo RB-60 that everyone on this sub seems to love.
Other than watering schedule, am I missing anything? Am I doing anything stupid?

2023.06.06 00:12 fluffy313 Because of this community we named our lawn mower a tragedeigh.

For reference, we live on an old farm and the lawn mower is a trusty old machine no one is quite sure how it still runs. However, it cuts the grass at a decided angle. We decided that it does that just to be ueneeke so it deserved a tragedeigh name.
So now we have a lawn mower named Ohldde Pfaiythphulle.

2023.06.05 22:03 SteelOctane Clover Trial

Clover Trial
Hey everyone! First post here.
Backstory: Purchased the house 5 years ago, lawn was decent. Over-seeded and fertilized the next year, this yielded decent results and I was relatively happy. Fast forward two years and Voles arrived on the scene, followed by dogs determined to dig up the Voles. I was not impressed. Lack of time and desire to fix it cause a nightmare of a “weed lawn”. At least it was still green?
I took a couple extra days off last weekend to finally rectify the situation. Started dismantling the fire pit, and to my amazement, there’s a gigantic stump chilling there. Great, off to Home Depot to rent a stump grinder, spent about 6 hours on Thursday grinding away with the most pitiful machine I’ve ever used (the big-boy units were all rented out).
I hired a tractor with a 5’ rototiller to grind up the back yard (best $250 spent). Managed to rope the in-laws into helping us! Raked, levelled, seeded, fertilized and rolled, all on Friday! Since then I’ve watered it well.
I’ll come back to update y’all in a few days. The seed mix I used was a 95% tall fescue and 5% micro-clover. 10kgs total.
Fertilizer: 16-32-6 - 9kgs

2023.06.05 21:11 Cautious_Article_757 California Smog - failing Nox - need help

Story time. I have a 1993 Pontaic Firebird LT1 V8.
Reading my smog sheet I got:
15mph: HC= 37, CO=0.01, NOX= 713 FAIL
25mph: HC= 36, CO= 0.01, NOX= 571 PASS
This is my second car and I like to tinker. I did the following 1. Checked old EGR valve. It seemed fine, it holds pressure, pressing the diaphram causes the car to stumble, no code faults. It was a little dirty. I replaced it anyways with a new old stock unit. Tested it, it holds pressure. Installed with a new gasket. I note that one of the two nuts is hard to reach and is not that tight. Before install I cleaned the surface of the intake manifold 2. Engaged EGR solenoid with the car off, with a vacuum pump and vacuum gauge, confirmed end to end the EGR system holds pressure.
  1. Smoke test. Borrowed smoke test machine, Unplugged intake, covere with a rubber glove, filled it with smoke via brake booster. Only smoke came out of oil cap and crank case ventilation gromet that holds the hose in. Noticed it was very loose. I replaced the oil cap and grommet. No smoke lead now. I presume this was a vacuum leak.
  2. Ran Berryman combustion chamber cleaner through intake following the instructions on the bottle.
  3. Oil change.
  4. New air filter.
  5. CRC Guaranteed to Pass in the tank.
NOTE: The catalytic converter is not carb approved. Its a 3in magnaflow the prior owner put on. Shops pass me for inspection non the less. Could a new cat help? I read that maybe getting on with a 2.5 inch diameter may increase back pressure to help with egr function.
Anways, after the work above. I did another smog test and it was even worse 15mph: HC= 29, CO=0, NOX= 846 FAIL
25mph: HC= 26 , CO= 0, NOX= 696 PASS
In the end I made Nox worse. Im beginning to stress. Id like to figure it out. But may need to suck it up and let a shop deal with it. Does anyone have any ideas on my Nox values, before doing anything and why they went up after? My only thought is my new EGR valve is not working, or maybe that one nut I cant fully tighten is a leak and its not engaging the EGR now. I just ordered a new EGR solenoid, just incase I toasted it while testing it.
Thoughts?

2023.06.05 20:59 Strictly_illiterate [TENANT] Landlord is upset about how the yard was left despite no written agreement about yard maintenance?

Hi, myself and two others (all 18-21F) were renting a home through a private renter - a friend’s mom, so we had a personal relationship with our landlords. We moved out a few weeks ago.
The house had a small yard, and upon move-in the landlord verbally asked us to mow the lawn once a week. There was no written agreement about lawn/yard maintenance, and we had no issue mowing the lawn weekly.
I spent over 8 hours deep cleaning the house before moving out, and we left the home looking great aside from some standard wear and tear over the year we stayed there. We were very respectful of the house for the entirety of our stay, always paid rent on time, etc. Before leaving, I mowed the lawn, swept the patio and cleaned up any pet waste which I did routinely anyway.
My friend told me yesterday his mom (landlord) was “pissed” about how the yard was left & she would be taking some of our security deposit because of it. Now, I’m not worried about the security deposit, I’m just really confused.
The sprinklers had just been turned on about a month ago now (moved out a couple of weeks ago), and I waited an extra week to mow because it was pouring everyday and I was told that mowing wet grass is damaging to the mower.
We didn’t weed the yard frequently because we didn’t know we were supposed to, and apparently the lawn wasn’t mowed “evenly” which caused damage? This also confuses me because they landlords came by fairly often, saw the yard and never said anything. Even my friend said, “well you didn’t have to weed but it’s usually recommended”.
Everything was lush and green when we left aside from two little bushes that started to yellow off to the side of the yard, so I’m just confused. I have no prior experience maintaining a yard so I guess I didn’t know not weeding was an issue, or there was a wrong way to mow?
Regardless, I’m mainly confused because all I had was a verbal, “Please mow once a week”, and now I feel terrible and I feel like this is a little unfair. Anyway, a landlord perspective would be appreciated since weeding was not part of our agreement. TIA.
Edit - looking back on photos, grass was very yellowed when we moved in (July-ish) and looks much better in photos from when we moved out so I’m really dumbfounded now.

2023.06.05 20:23 LubaLouie Luba 5000 or 3000 and Questions

I cannot decide between Luba 5000 or 3000
I have 0.49 acres but front yard is sloped. So I need to be sure whatever model I grab will run this slope cleanly and reliably. not entirely sure the angle of the slope but looks comparable to 30ish percent.
Questions here...
I can see the 5000 and 3000 are identical with exception of
5000 - full treaded front wheels, bigger brains*** 3000 - omni-direction front wheels and less brains***
*** - I read somewhere the electronics in 3000 were memory/processor limited compared to 5000 .. anyone verify this? or did Mammotion really only limit this via software?
GPS Tracking - I've read the GPS tracking isn't enabled and the actual hardware isn't even installed on any of the units. Anyone verified this with Mammotion? I'd hate to have a 3000.00 lawn mower walk away!
If no GPS hardware for tracking is installed then Mammotion is advertising a false feature because it is advertised on their product page still.
Luba supports the "lost" feature. The original user will be informed of the current position of the lost LUBA when it reconnects to the network.
Any USB ports on these units? I would like to attach a 5v 2amp wireless camera to the unit but not sure if these guys have any sort of ports I can snag power from.
4G modem - any ideas on what the 4g modem is planned for? I mean could be good for tracking but my understanding is the 4g modem isn't even enabled right now?

2023.06.05 18:08 PSHoffman Pacifist - 7: We're Not Here to Adopt

<< First < Prev Next >
Growing up on her homeworld, Caly had gotten used to stone walls and cold granite castles sitting atop lonely hills. But, somehow, the orangy-brown blocks of this wall made the fort look more warm and inviting.
Except they couldn’t find the entrance.
They walked around the damn thing three times before Olm spotted the pillar—an old, eroded monument that marked this place as a Synod fort. The words were worn down to smooth, illegible shapes, and half the pillar lay strewn across the path in the sand. There were more signs of a scuffle: smears of black soot on the walls and bullet-marks on the trees. Some of the stones had melted under concentrated plasma fire. There were bullet casings in the sand. She picked one up, inspected the head stamp. No rust. Recent.
Caly pulled her rifle into position. Olm already had one hand on his chest, ready to open his armor, and his Hammer hand was clenched around the gloves controls. She scanned the branches above, searched the walls. Nothing but the breeze.
They found the door, a heavy wooden thing. Neither of them talked as they approached. A scream, high and shrill, pierced the silence. It was coming from inside the fort—the scream kept going for what felt like minutes, and then all was silent.
Olm nodded at the heavy, wooden door embedded in the stone wall.
“Me first?” she asked.
He gave her a look that said, “You wanted to do this.” So, Caly sucked in her breath, and approached the door—her rifle at the ready.
She was debating whether or not to knock when a slat slid open.
“Dropping off?” a muffled voice crowed through the slat, “Or picking up?” The voice sounded almost metallic, like the speaker was talking through a tin can with holes in it.
Caly had to stoop down to the to see two eyes peering back at her through a pair of goggles that magnified the eyes to a ridiculous level.
“I… what?”
The magnified eyes blinked rapidly, adjusting to Caly’s face. “Well, you don’t look like a child, unless they grow that tall where you come from. So, I figure you’re either here to drop one off or pick one up. Which is it?”
“We’re looking for the orphanage-”
“Orphanarium,” the voice said, suddenly irate.
“Orphanarium?”
“Out here, orphanages are for the unwanted. And I don’t believe there’s such thing as an unwanted child—excuse me a moment. Tomick, you ankle-biting he-demon, get down from there!”
Caly turned away, and whispered so that only Olm could hear, “That explains the screaming.”
“Maybe,” Olm said. Caly noted his hand was still clenched in his glove.
“What are you saying? Hold on,” the voice grunted from the other side of the door. Then, a deadbolt clunked, knocking a layer of dust off the door. Caly started to move forward, but Olm put a hand on her shoulder. He shook his head, and pointed at himself. Then, he pushed open the door, slowly. Took a few cautious steps in, craning his head up at the walls. She heard him trip, and catch himself. Heard him let out a disbelieving, “Whoa.”
Then, an animal snarl. Olm yelped.
Someone screamed back—Gran, Caly assumed—but she wasn’t shouting at Olm. “Tomick, what did we say about biting? Bite food, not people!”
Caly shoved the door all the way open, planning to set the place alight with plasma bolts. She blinked at the mess.
A crowd of toys—stuffed animals and homemade dolls—were lined up in front of the door. They were sitting there, in various states of repose, in various states of destruction (missing eyes, fur, horns, limbs, some deflated from a lack of stuffing, some with caved in heads, some with nothing but their head), all staring up at the door, as if someone had put them there while waiting for Caly and Olm enter. More projects littered the courtyard—a scarecrow made of sticks, wearing an enforcer’s helmet, a pile of misshapen pottery drying in the sun, and Olm, waving his arm back and forth, trying to shake a child-sized xeno off his forearm. Yes, the child’s teeth were as large as icicles, but they utterly failed to pierce Olm’s stony skin, and Olm seemed more bewildered than pained.
“How do I get him off?”
“I can’t apologize for that one,” Gran called from somewhere out of view, “He’s teething. His kind gets like that at that age. It’s the only reason he gets his own bedroom, though if you believe the others, it’s an outrage. A scandal. Of course, he’d probably bite them to death if I wasn’t watching—Tomick, I’m going to give you to the count of three—”
Olm shook his arm, and there was a scraping sound as the child’s jaws slid down his wrist and fell off. The little xeno smacked the ground with an audible “Uff.” When the kid put a clawed hand to his mouth, his eyes went wide, and he cried out, “I ‘hipped my ‘hooth!”
“Well, whose fault is that?” Gran asked, not even looking at him.
Olm’s eyes went wide. He started to apologize when Gran stopped him, “They grow back. I swear, I could start a bone jewelry business.”
Red walls ringed the yard, with little apartments built into each one. A tower lorded over all, and on the opposite side a gathering hall frowned down on her. Dust covered everything, and slashes of dried mud painted one side of the hall, along with countless other stains, scratches, burn marks, and pieces of slightly-crinkled paper covered in scribbles and brightly-colored shapes. Xeno children from every corner of the Synod crawled around the walls—running, shrieking, being shrieked at, and in general causing chaos. They were all so dust covered that, despite the difference in species, Caly thought they all looked like siblings.
And at the epicenter of this chaos stood Gran. She stood proud and short, and covered in foliage: long vines draped down her head and were gathered in a long knot that hung down her back, and heavy leaves were draped over her shoulders, a cape fastened together with sunflower stalks. More vines draped down her front, so that Caly almost didn’t notice that her skin was metalwork. And her face—all tarnished chrome, just flexible enough to frown. Those weren’t goggles on her eyes, those were her eyes. She’s not a xeno, Caly realized. She’s Made.
Gran pointed at Caly with a broom, “Careful with the gun,” said in that inorganic voice, “The kids get … clingy. Don’t ask me how, but if they get their paws on it, it will make it sticky.”
On one hip, she carried a basket that held one infant with a thumb in its mouth, and in her other arm she had a broom, and in between sweeps, she hollered stern commands at the worst offenders. “Kairen, quit hitting your sister! Gola, quit making your sister hit you!” One kid, sobbing, came up to her, and after a series of indecipherable blubbering words, Gran said softly, “Oh, no, sweety, you don’t need heart surgery. It’s okay if you swallowed it. Where did you get gum anyway?”
Through all this, the baby on her hip slept so soundly, its eyes never once opened.
“Jessup! Tucian! Get down here and help me get these dust devils off to the well!”
Two xeno children, older than the others, peeled off from their huddle on the walls, and started gathering the younger ones.
Gran addressed both Caly and Olm without taking her eyes off the kids, “Well, as I was asking—Larold, if I see you climbing that tower one more time, what did I say would happen?—are you dropping off your—” Gran lowered her voice, “Your unwanted. Or are you here because you want to adopt one of these fine and promising future members of society.”
Caly swept her gaze across the courtyard. Tomick, that child with the saber teeth, was gnawing on a rock now, trying to shorten his unbroken tooth to match the broken one. Next to him, a three-fingered prackian child (at least, Caly thought she was a prackian) was running with a pot wedged onto her head, banging it with a wooden spoon in a way that had to hurt.
“Actually,” Caly said, “We’re looking for someone who might’ve come through here—”
“Gran!” a pair of insectoid twins chittered and tugged on Gran’s leafy frock, “We did all our chores.”
“Already?” Gran said doubtfully.
The twins bobbed their heads in unison. “I mopped.”
“I swept!”
“And we changed all the sheets.”
Gran set the broom aside and kneeled low, still holding that sleeping infant on her hip. She patted one of the insectoids on the head, her demeanor suddenly as soft as a cloud. “Well, look at you two. Give me three minutes, please, and I’ll get it from the beehive. Now, where was I?” Gran’s goggled eyes irising as they refocused on Caly, “Oh, yes. Dropping off or picking up?”
Eagerly, she looked from Caly, to Olm, and back to Caly.
“Uh,” Olm said.
Eagerness faded into disappointment. “Oh, who am I kidding?” Gran said, “Nobody ever comes to pick them up.” With her free hand, she pulled one of the twins close and covered both his ear holes, “Nobody wants these kids. They come here, they make promises to return when times are a little less tough. It’s all lies, though I don’t tell them that.”
The other twin blinked up at her with huge, buggy, innocent eyes, only vaguely aware he wasn’t supposed to be hearing this.
“But,” Gran sighed, making a sound like a heat vent set to max, “I supposed that’s the way of things. Not many care about the unwanted. All I can do is what I’ve always done: take them in and give them a piece of what they deserve. So, where’s yours then? Skip the lies, I’ll take them all the same.”
“Er,” Olm said.
“Where is what?” Caly asked.
“The baby,” Gran said, “The one you don’t want. This is an Orphanarium, you know. People leave their children stranded across the desert sands, and I take those poor precious innocent little—Larold, put! It! Down!”
A child on the other side of the courtyard had found two hover engines, just big enough to propel a child’s bike, and had hooked them up to either end of a plumber’s pipe. The engines fed back and forth through the pipe, superheating the pipe until it glowed red. The pipe started to vibrate in mid-air, and one of the engines shot off, spraying plasma against a wall, and melting a hole in it. It might’ve been Caly’s imagination, but when Gran howled at the disobedient child, the leaves on her head seemed to stand on end, creating a kind of thorny headdress that only served to enunciate her outrage. Larold put the tube down and had enough awareness to look ashamed
“What was I saying?” Gran asked. Her head leaves came back to rest, and the wrinkles around her goggles and mouth softened, letting the rusted lines fall back into place.
“Isn’t it dangerous for him to play with that?” Caly asked, distracted by the high-pitched whine still coming from the other engine.
“Sorry, Miss Gran,” Olm said. “We didn’t bring a child.”
“Then how do you expect to give one up for adoption?” Gran asked, as if Olm was being thick-headed.
“We don’t.” Caly said.
“Oh?” The pupils in Gran’s magnified goggles suddenly swelled, and like a magnet finding metal, she was suddenly at Caly’s side. “Does that mean you’re here to—” and she whispered with far too much hope, “adopt one?”
“No.”
“Oh…”
“We’re looking for someone. He came this way.”
Gran withdrew, suddenly suspicious.
“Don’t know anyone who came this way,” the old machine woman said. “Don’t know nothing about anything except keeping these kids alive.”
One of the insect twins tugged insistently on her frond-dress. “What about Tawf, Gran? He waf here yefterday!”
Gran hissed at him, “They didn’t ask you, Maruhn-”
“I’m Ramuhn. He’f Maruhn—” the beetle child pointed at his brother, who was staring blankly ahead, mouth hanging dumbly open, his ear holes were still covered by Gran’s hands.
“Ramuhm, I’m sorry. Why don’t you—”
“And,” Ramuhn continued, “There waf thofe big people with the bikef and the gunf. Remember? They tried to break down the door. And Tawf made them run and we all cheered. I like Tawf. When if he coming back?”
“Ramuhn, please.”
“Whose this Taws?” Olm asked, his deep voice rumbling through their hissing argument. Gran and the beetle child looked up at him. Bored, the one with his ears covered started bobbing his head back and forth.
“This Taws,” Caly said, “Is he a human?”
The sudden white swiveling of Gran’s goggled eyes was all the answer she needed.
Gran frowned. She handed the infant on her hip to one of the older kids, and told the twins to run along. She waited until the yard was empty, all the children gone who knew where.
“You won’t find him here,” Gran said, her voice sharp and metallic. “In fact, you won’t find him at all. I told him to leave it alone. I told him. But I’ve never seen someone so naive. So stupid. His head’s full of noble ideas, and I don’t know how he made it out this far without getting his behind handed to him. But there’s something about him. He’s got his ways. Why, just the other day he brought me a whole sack full of—” Gran blinked, suddenly reluctant to say more. Caly and Olm already knew.
“Money,” Caly said. “A sack full of synars, wasn’t it?”
“For the children,” Gran said. “I don’t know where he got it, and I don’t intend to ask questions. Crowns know it’s going to a precious cause. I saved his life, and now, he’s determined to save mine, the fool.”
“What do you mean?”
“Yole,” Gran said bitterly, and Caly felt her stomach tighten involuntarily.
Even Olm held his breath.
It was said Yole was one of the first pioneers on New Nowhere, who got lost in the northern wastes. It was said she was a ghost, a curse made flesh and blood. Neither were true. But when everyone said she was mad, that was true. Yole, whoever she was, had taken up residence in the loneliest Spirine in all of New Nowhere. She lived, not on the land around the Spirine, but inside the thing.
Despite her solitude, the woman’s funds seemed nearly bottomless. She paid a premium for services, and for years attracted the most desperate people from far and wide. Those who came back from her private Spirine, came back strange. Incomplete. Missing more than just a few memories.
“Thought the Spirine had finally done her in,” Gran said. “Hadn’t heard nothing about Yole in years. That is, until a few months back. She’s hired new blood. Bad blood. They take what they can, and burn what they can’t. Only Blacktree and a couple halfway stops have escaped their evil. And me, of course.”
“We saw signs of battle,” Caly said.
“Yep. That was them. Yole’s people—I don’t know what got into their heads—but they thought they’d steal from a poor old lady like me. I told Taws not to make a fuss. I told him to give over the money, but he kept saying something about how he wasn’t going to let ‘it’ happen again, whatever ‘it’ is. That fool’s never been right since I found him. He’s got a heart in him, made of something more precious than gold, but he must’ve lost half his mind when he crashed on the rocks. And I’m not so sure about the other half, neither.”
“What did he do to Yole’s people?”
“Don’t know, and didn’t ask. I took the children inside, and we hid, and the sounds we heard, by the stars and the void between, it wasn’t like nothing I never heard before. Taws came back up this way, his arms black like he’d been playing in gunpowder.”
“Maybe it was blood,” Caly said, “What color is human blood?”
“He didn’t seem hurt. And I didn’t hear from Yole’s kind either. I haven’t let the kids out of the fort’s walls since Taws left, because I’m afraid to find out.”
Caly thought over it. She hadn’t seen any bodies where they’d come in. Just signs of battle. And those black smears.
“Where’d he go?”
Gran only shook her head.
“Look,” Caly said. “I need to find him. I’ll pay you whatever—”
“You won’t hurt him,” Gran said.
“I … We weren’t … I mean, I wasn’t—”
“It wasn’t a question. And I don’t need your money to tell you he’s already gone. He left yesterday. Poor fool chose the dark way down. I told him not to go, but he said he knew Yole’s kind. He said she would just keep coming back. Poor fool.” Gran sniffed quietly. Excused herself, and wiped her metal nose on the fronds of her frock.
“He went to Yole’s place?” Olm asked.
Gran nodded, quietly.
Olm sighed his resignation. “Guess that’s that.”
Caly looked at him, her fists clenched at her sides.
“You don’t come back from Yole’s place. And even if you do, you don’t. Not really, anyway. The Mad Queen’s contagious.”
“Maybe if we go to Zyroc empty-handed,” Olm suggested, “We could beg. Or maybe head back to Yonder and see if the Bitter King’s forgotten about what happened.”
“No.”
Olm cocked his head sideways at her, cords of muscle tautening in his neck, cracks in his skin glinting in the late afternoon light. “No?”
“The Bitter King doesn’t forget. The Bitter King will kill us.”
“And Mad Yole won’t?”
“I’d rather shoot myself in the foot than go begging at Zyroc’s ugly feet.”
“Then … ?”
Caly pulled Olm to the side, just outside of Gran’s hearing. It wasn’t necessary—Gran was busy shouting at a batch of orphans who were peeking over the walls, trying to eavesdrop. A girl with a white lines on her skin and a leafy frock that was so large it dragged on the ground was mimicking the older woman’s every move, a tiny shouting replica of Gran.
“I’m going to get our money back,” Caly said.
“You’re … going to steal from the orphans?”
“Of course, I’m not going to steal from the orphans!” Caly hissed. Up on the walls, the kids blinked down at her. She lowered her voice, “Just because I’m couran doesn’t mean I’m a heartless monster. You heard her—he only left a day ago. We can catch him before he gets anywhere near Yole’s place. We find him, he pays us, and then he can run off and die.”
Olm put a fist under his chin, thinking hard. “But he gave it all to Gran.”
Caly scoffed, “Nobody’s that generous. Not out here. Not anywhere.”
Olm inclined his head, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
“Besides,” Caly continued. “There’s a principle at stake. Nobody steals from a daughter of the House of B—”
“Technically, he didn’t steal from you. If anything, you were the one trying to rob him.”
She glowered.
“Oh,” Olm said. “You were trying to have a—thingy. Sorry.”
“Forget it.”
“What do they call it? An ego trip?”
Caly, fuming, stomped off, not wanting to see the smile that cracked Olm’s face.

New My Son Sanctuary
Deep Periphery, 50 light years spin-coreward of Spitz
May 3rd, 3145
Elizabeth Hugh was meditating in her small cabin. The smell of lilac and cedar from the gardens surrounding the temple wafted gently through the open windows and doors, coming in on the warm spring breeze. Her cream colored robes marked her as a Sister in the Order that had made this uncharted world its home. She was comfortable here, her eyes closed, her hair - once vibrant and red, now gray - braided and expertly tied with a piece of twine. She - who had once been called a Queen - contented herself with simple meals taken at a shared table, and a simple cot where she could lay her head.
How far she had come was a testament to the person who had held this post before her - for Elizabeth had been a Queen, the terrible pirate who had led the Mailed Fist Marauders. They had raided all throughout the spinward periphery, from the Raven Alliance to the Fronc Reaches. Brutal and destructive, the Marauders left nothing but death and destruction in their wake. Badly injured in a fire fight with the TDF, they had made a wild jump into an uncharted system. Getting weaker, Elizabeth had fought to stay in command, but she was unceremoniously dumped into an escape pod and shot at the planet she would come to learn was “New My Son Sanctuary”, a Buddhist temple and retreat settled centuries ago during the height of the Old Star League.
While being nursed back to health, Elizabeth discovered that the sanctuary had BattleMechs. She began to scheme on how to use this information to get back at her old pirate band. The Abbess had figured out what she was plotting, saying she had a raging fire burning within her - and that it would consume her if she tried. A deal was struck - the Abbess would support her if she could defeat her in battle.
Elizabeth had laughed, letting her pirate Queen side into full view before this woman for the first time. The Abbess didn’t react and instead led her to the Mech hanger. Here, two ancient ARC-2K Archers had been prepped by the Monks and Nuns. Instead of their robes they wore gray uniforms and carried a mix of antipersonal and anti-armor weapons - Elizabeth had not been prepared for that, nor with how well the two machines had been maintained. She was a natural MechWarrior, born and raised into a pirate band, but she was starting to feel she was in over her head. She was right.
After her defeat, shocked at how easily it had been managed she had stood before the Abbess in broken humility. It was the moment that had changed her life. “You have a choice. We have the ability to send you away, if you choose to go back to your old life we can make that happen, though I will tell you now you will die. Or you can stay here. Here you can live and thrive. If you choose to stay here, then go to the well and bring me water.” Elizabeth had stood there for a moment, but had turned and taken a step towards the wooden bucket by the door. It was the first step that would define her new life.
She ended her meditation with a carefully exhaled breath and stood. Despite being almost 70 years of age, and the terrible wound she had suffered, she still was able to move with the grace of an athlete. Even with the ever growing pain and itchiness around her old wound. The meditation and her ability to focus her mind kept the worst of it at bay.
This was because she still trained every day with the younger Monks and Nuns that called this Sanctuary home, while also maintaining her duties as Abbess. Duties that required attending now. She stepped out onto the wooden walkway that meandered through the blossoming lilacs and flowers of the garden and walked slowly through the morning sun towards the open courtyard that would hold her visitor - Brother Michael of the Brotherhood of Randis. She caught him staring at a fountain, keeping their koi pond aerated. “Brother Michael!” Her voice - which had once screamed names, now was soft and light. The man turned and smiled.
“Abbess!” He bowed slightly towards her. “Thank you again for your hospitality. The extra rice and wheat will be greatly helpful for the victims of the Broken Bones faction.” Elizabeth nodded and smiled, “And the extra missiles provided by your facilities will help keep us engaging.” He frowned, “But again, I must beg of you - Wolf Empire forces have been raiding deep into this region, can we assign any extra guards to you?”
Elizabeth shook her head, “No Brother Michael, we are fine.” She gestured towards the gardens and towards the wider temple complex. “While they might come into this system, there is little chance they would see this and think of us as having resources worth taking or wasting their time on. Our larger manufacturing capabilities are deep underground in the old Star League supply depot.” She paused, “Would you care to join me for tea?”
Brother Michael shook his head and smiled, “I am glad you feel safe but if you change your mind we will come when you call. And yes, I will join you for tea before leaving.”
With that, Elizabeth and Michael adjourned to the dining area where they discussed logistics and how the Sanctuary and the Brotherhood could continue to support one another over the next few months of operations.

“Listen up!” Star Captain Maria Stims floated into the conference room and strapped herself into a chair. Around her were the young MechWarriors assigned to her trinary. Their mission was simple, follow old Explorer Corp routes to uncover ComStar or Word of Blake depots or other useful information. “Our next target is an isolated world called New My Son Sanctuary. Records were difficult to uncover. The Star League became aware of it during the Periphery Uprising, shortly before the vile Usurper struck. They had created a supply depot away from the colony that had come here - some kind of religious order.” She looked down at her data pad. “ComStar made contact roughly 100 years ago - supposedly the colony still existed but that was all that the Acolyte had recorded.” She placed the data pad down on the velcro strip intended to hold it place when in zero G. “Obviously with both ComStar and the old Star League having been here, it is important that we get eyes on this world and determine what - if anything - is of value to Clan Wolf. Quiaff?” The table gave her the affirmation she was seeking. “Questions?’
One of the MechWarriors, brash and aggressive, quickly raised his hand, “When we get there will we strike immediately?” She could see the eagerness in his eyes.
“Neg. We shall follow custom and issue a batchal for a Trial of Possession of the world. We have no reason to believe that those that are there are even warriors, and we are not pirates to raid and attack undefended targets.” That was what David wanted though, he felt the blood lust and the eagerness for war. She turned sharply to the other warriors, “Any other questions? Good. We jump in one hour, then we will burn 2g into the system. We estimate three days until landing. Dismissed.”
The Wolf warriors went to their duties eagerly, hoping that this landing would be contested, hoping that they would have a chance to howl and hunt.

Abbess Elizabeth and two of her Monks were reviewing the telescope and radar telemetry coming in. It had been three days since their systems - ancient Star League communications equipment - had alerted them to the unexpected arrival of a JumpShip. The Wolf Empire forces had eagerly announced themselves with a standard Clan Batchall, and Elizabeth had decided to wait till they landed. She calmly worked a string of beads hanging from the sash she had tied around her waist as her advisors and she discussed what they were seeing. They helped her focus and think of a plan. Their small arms and handful of mechs and vehicles would not be up to the task of fighting off what they estimated to be a full trinary of Clan OmniMechs. But their Batchall and code of honor might be helpful. In more ways than one.
The challenge had been simple. The Wolf Empire was claiming this world and all resources upon it. They had not mentioned the Supply Depot but Elizabeth knew that was probably why they were here.
Elizabeth nodded to her advisors, “So we are decided then?” They both nodded their consent. She turned to their Star League equipment and switched it on. “Empire ship Kerenksy’s Blood. This is the independent settlement of New My Son Santuary, I am Abbess Elizabeth, leader of the religious order that resides here. I am transmitting landing coordinates. We accept your batchall, and wish to meet to discuss terms. I shall have one of my monks wait for you.”
A short amount of lag later, allowing for the signal to go out and for them to respond, a woman’s voice crackled to life. “Aff, Abbess. We shall meet to discuss terms. Kerensky’s Blood out.” The radio went silent.
Elizabeth nodded, “Well then, I must go prepare.”

The landing had gone smoothly, with the Monks providing clear direction and instruction to the experienced DropShip crew. The old Union-C had participated in the original Clan Invasion of the Inner Sphere a century ago. It now was used by this inexperienced Trinary on a mission of great importance to their Empire. As the dust cleared, ground crews approached swiftly to prepare the Union. Star Captain Maria stopped them quickly, not until the crew of the DropShip could confirm that no trickery was afoot.
Standing on the tarmac, she watched as the ground crews worked with the DropShip crew and with a quick hand signal saying everything was alright she finally relaxed. This changed in an instance when a person close behind her cleared their throat. “Star Captain Maria?” She whirled to see a young man dressed in a cream robe, his hands politely clasped in front of him. His face was serene with no sign of fear or alarm. His only ornamentation was a set of beads tied to a sash. He bowed slightly as she turned to face him. “The Abbess is this way.” Her Trinary - really just cubs if she thought about it - followed behind her. They were eager to fight and pillage but she had explained that the rules of engagement must be followed.
She was disturbed that there was no fear apparent on this young man’s face. Everyone seemed to think their arrival was completely ordinary in fact. She felt something was wrong, but couldn’t put her finger on what. But the monk was already walking away so she gestured for her MechWarriors to follow her and strode forward trying not to let her unease get the best of her.
Away from the space port, the colony became very quiet. Maria was impressed with the beauty of the gardens and architecture. But this was no place of warriors, and she was mildly contemptuous of the monks she saw tending to the flowers and gardens. She heard one of the MechWarriors behind her comment on food that food eats and she laughed internally though she wouldn’t let it show on her face.
They finally emerged into a courtyard where a table was set up. Around the courtyard stood a handful of Monks, and sitting at the table, puttering with a tea pot and tray was an older woman. Star Captain Maria paused for a brief second for on the table were two bare blades - two kiem style blades, one decorated in garnets the other with amethysts. Despite the jeweled ornament, both blades looked functional - and sharp. Her MechWarriors noticed the blades as well and stopped at the well manicured grass edge of the Courtyard.
The Abbess gave no sign that she saw them or even was aware of their existence. Maria decided to stand on tradition. “The Wolves of Kerensky have claimed this world for their own. What tame dogs defend it?” She called out with conviction, her voice projecting the ancient challenge clearly through the air.
The Abbess looked up and smiled faintly, “Tame dog is it? That I might be, that I might be!” At this she laughed, “Please, come forward and sit. I have prepared tea. We shall outline our defenses and options, and if I remember correctly, choose the place of combat. Is that correct?” She began to pour the tea, “And this will be for a Trial of Possession - primarily of the old Star League supply depot. It is fully operational by the way.”
Maria paused. This Abbess was not what she had expected from a Periphery backwater far off the map. She began to approach when one of her MechWarriors, a hot head named David, stepped forward, “What is this?” He demanded, gesturing to encompass the entirety of the table and the courtyard. The Abbess just looked at him. “We come to claim this world and you wish us to drink tea like children?!”
“MechWarrior David!” Maria snapped loudly, “Stand down!” He looked outraged. The Abbess did not seem to have any reaction at all. Maria stepped forward, “My apologies Abbess, some of my MechWarriors are new and this is their first mission.” She sat and took the offered cup of tea, she sipped at it cautiously. It was delicious and fresh, green and light on her tongue. “Which is what I have brought: 15 Wolf Empire MechWarriors with a range of light and medium OmniMechs. What forces do you bid?”
The Abbess smiled. “Myself.”
Maria stopped for a second, “My apologies, but you wanted to discuss a battle challenge.” She placed her tea down, “I cannot fight an old woman.” The Abbess laughed.
“Pick a blade.” The Abbess smiled. Maria looked at them both for a moment and reached for the garnet encrusted blade. Her hand was quick, her movement sure but as her fingers wrapped around the blade the amethyst blade flashed in the light and was at her throat.
The Clan MechWarriors all stepped forward. Maria raised her other hand and ordered them to stop. “If the Abbess wanted me dead, I would be dead. She is trying to demonstrate that we should acknowledge her as a warrior.” Maria nodded and let go of the blade on the table, the amethyst sword disappeared, silently finding a scabbard within the robes of the Abbess. Maria considered how her people were surrounded by very calm Monks and Nuns wearing similar robes.
“I would like to propose a duel. Myself against one of your warriors. First, the duel must be between equal equipment, second if we emerge successful, the Wolf Empire must cede all claim on this world and it’s people. Third, the person who I face, if they lose, must join the Sanctuary.”
Maria shook her head, “That doesn’t seem entirely fair. Whatever BattleMechs you have would be keyed for your people, mine would not know the first thing about them or be comfortable with them.”
Elizabeth nodded, “Fair. I shall grant you a period of two weeks to familiarize yourself with the machines. You will have access to both BattleMechs we will use, whichever one you choose I shall take the other. You can have both for the two week period. The battle shall be fought within the bamboo forests to our east. The victor shall be the first person to bypass the other’s armor and go internal.”
Before Maria could speak, David spoke. “I demand the honor of accepting this challenge for the Wolf Empire!” Maria frowned, as David was one of her best pilots - but an absolute hot head. They knew nothing about the machines. But she was stuck. David had unexpectedly bound her to this Trial.
Star Captain Maria stood, “Well bargained and done.”
Elizabeth stood and bowed, “Well bargained and done.”

True to her word, two ARC-2K Archers had been brought to the Kerensky’s Blood. Despite their age, they were well maintained. One of Maria’s Mechtechs informed her that - if he hadn’t seen their service records, he would have assumed they had been preserved right off of the assembly line. He had been incredibly impressed. Despite their age and primitive technology - compared to the Clans - both were towering examples of the powerful weapons and capabilities of the Archer class. The LRM and Large laser combo made for a dangerous and deadly machine, elegant and straightforward.
As with the blades, both Mechs followed a similar pattern. Both were painted an off white cream color, one decorated in red, the other purple, with stylized flower designs. Maria had her techs go over them in detail within the first few hours and they had signed off. Other than the paint, both were identical. There were no hidden changes, no traps. This was going to be a shear test of skill and stamina - the old woman against the young pup.
David had chosen the red Archer, the orchid design appealing to his sense of style. “Red like the flame that burns within me!” he had quipped as he climbed up into the cockpit. He had begun by running the mech through its paces in what would become the battlefield. Testing the laser and missile systems. He complained bitterly about how primitive they were, comparing the targeting and tracking systems to iron sights. Maria’s concern grew. She ordered him to keep going and practicing while her techs continued to dig into both BattleMechs. When he exhausted his ammo, she was prepared to argue for more but when she opened the discussion more was simply provided. A large truck pulled up to their DropShip, and the Sanctuary workers helped to unload the ammo bins.
While Maria was incredibly impressed with the professionalism and the dignity in which everyone operated, including invitations to dinner and tea, she was uneasy. They behaved with incredible honor and she must respect that - but she had a sinking feeling that within two days she would be leaving this world in defeat. The Abbess was serene and calm, and the only preparation Maria had seen her perform was practicing tai chi in the courtyard.
She tried to give what wisdom she could to David, but he was headstrong and confident, eager to prove his value as a warrior in a perfect duel of honor that would highlight his abilities to the Clan. He scorned her cautions and words, and enjoyed his two weeks of throwing an incredibly large amount of missiles down range.
Maria frowned and was also aware that the DropShip captain was watching this unfold uneasily as well. Both discussed what would happen and both grew worried. The Abbess would return to pick up the lilac Archer, and then both would head towards the forest.
Hanh Forest

David smiled smugly as he followed the Abbess down the winding path. It would diverge ahead and both would have a few minutes to get to their respective staging areas. The Archer did move smoothly under his command, and he was vibrating with eagerness to get into this duel and claim this world for the Empire. When they hit the break, the Abbess turned. His comms crackled to life, “MechWarrior David of the Wolf Empire, please follow the designated path to your staging area. When you are ready please signal the Monk who is your attendant. He will signal my attendant and we will begin.”
“Aff, Abbess” He shot off immediately and turned down the path. He quickly reached the staging area as he could see on his heads up display that Elizabeth had reached hers. Their battle area was a small forest with rolling hills. Ideal for ranged combat. He reviewed everything he had studied and practiced and after taking a steadying breath bared his teeth like a wolf and sent the signal to the Monk. A single flag was waved and a red firework shot off into the sky. A moment later a purple firework exploded and he slammed his Mech forward as fast as it could go straight towards the Abbess. It was too far for his LRMs, but he would close that distance quickly.
***
Elizabeth shifted to her right, watching her displays and seeing the young MechWarrior charge straight ahead. She smiled faintly as she thought of her own charge, and maneuvered expertly through the bamboo. Her Archer - despite its size and weight - was graceful, and she maneuvered with light touches and an ease brought on by years of experience.
He was closing the distance, changing direction slightly to match her own shift. As he crested a hill at the maximum range of their LRMs, he opened fire. Elizabeth casually shifted direction and speed, and his missiles went wide, flying through the forest branches like birds. She tracked back along their exhaust and as her Mech settled into position gently squeezed her triggers causing thirty of her own dangerous birds to soar across the distance before eagerly tearing into David’s armor. While nothing penetrated, he was bloodied.
***
David gasped as both the heat and damage indicators spiked within his console. He reeled, and slammed his controls down and over, shoving himself into thicker cover while also trying to pivot for a new lock. He had a perfect site line and she had just casually side stepped him. He hammered his controls while fighting the mech’s inertia and the laws of physics. She was already on the move and he was having a hard time tracking her. Another wave of missiles came at him and more armor popped. Again he fired, this time more desperately, and managed to slightly clip her legs. He howled for now he was not alone in taking damage.
***
Elizabeth twisted to the left and slowed to a walk. Her opponent had managed to cause some light damage to her legs, but she had avoided the worst of it. His aim was improving but she had scored multiple groupings across his torso and arms, significantly weakening his armor.
She watched as he tried to charge straight at her again, and she correctly anticipated his path - more missiles shot out at much closer range. This time his speed partly saved him for less missiles hit but he still took some damage. He opened up with his large lasers and missiles, spiking his heat to a dangerously high level - and only scoring a single hit against her. She sped up again as he slowed down to a crawl, the heat level quickly overloading his machine.
***
David gasped for air, his throat screaming in agony at the super heated gas he was desperately trying to breathe filled his lungs. He slammed the override button, as every system screamed in protest at him. Finally switching focus to his scans he realized that the Abbess was gone - where she was what felt like a second ago she was gone now. Alarms blaring in his ears he struggled to reorient himself and try to figure out where she was. He gasped as a laser slammed into his arm, boiling away the last of the armor there. He tried to turn but the Archer was ignoring his need for speed, and responded only sluggishly. He screamed and pounded the controls, desperately trying to get any weapon system pointed towards his opponent. Getting one arm up he fired desperately, the shot going well wide of his target. Another laser flashed and cut into his torso - boiling away the armor and in a flash his autoeject system had triggered, launching him brutally into the sky as the LRM ammo cooked off and destroyed the Archer.

MechWarrior David jerked awake with a gasp, sitting upright he looked around wildly for a second before he realized where he was. “I…” he paused. “I lost.” He whispered quietly.
“Yes, you did.” The voice was that of the Abbess. She was sitting next to him. He looked at her realizing what his honor required.
“What happened?”
Elizabeth nodded, “You were aggressive and forward in the finest tradition of Clan Wolf. You fought hard and you lost. Star Captain Maria accepted the outcome of the Trial and has returned to the Empire. You remain as the newest Monk of the Sanctuary.” He nodded, it was what honor required.
“How did I lose?” He couldn’t understand how he couldn’t get a lock, couldn’t find her.
“As I said you fought hard - but you didn’t just fight me. You fought your BattleMech. You fought yourself. The more you fought the more you resisted yourself, the more your BattleMech resisted you. Warfare and battle is not about challenge and aggressiveness. I didn’t fight you. I let you fight yourself.”
He digested that for a few minutes. Elizabeth just sat silently. “What happens now?”
Elizabeth smiled and reached over. “You came to us raw, here you shall train and become a true warrior.” She paused and looked around. “Your timing was fortunate, I am dying. And while I might have a few years left in me with treatment, we were preparing to find a replacement for me when you came to us. You will now learn how to lead and protect these people and the responsibilities you are entrusted with. You shall become a wolf among the lilacs, guarding this world and protecting it.”
He nodded. “What must I do?” He asked.
She pointed to a wooden bucket, “First you will get water, then you shall chop wood. We shall make tea.” He nodded, and got out of bed. He picked up the cream robe over the chair and put it on, grabbing the bucket he went out to the yard and filled it. The fire that was consuming him was out, and he was ready to begin his life.

2023.06.05 17:24 Azipear Mowing at lowest setting (for grass that can be cut that low)...

I have a zorro zoysia lawn that I've been pretty happy with. Around 5500 square feet in the front and 2500 in the back. Historically, I have mowed all of it with my Toro Timemaster rotary mower. However, this year I figured I'd try using my Fiskars manual reel mower but only in the back yard since it's not practical to use it over the entire 8000 sqft. I also wanted to try mowing the back at the lowest setting of one inch. Here's my conundrum: Since you typically "scalp" the lawn at the start of the season and then raise the deck so only new growth shows up, is it possible to use the lowest mower setting for all-season mowing? Basically, I got my back yard to one inch right now, but there are patches where there is no green since I lopped off the leaf blades. Will green blades grow in those patches, lower to the ground than they were before? Or will I just continue to shave off any green growth every time I mow at one inch?
TLDR: Is the lowest cut height setting on a mower really only useful for the occasional scalping and not for maintenance mowing?

2023.06.05 14:54 ImmortalJormund Final Ember of the Afterglow

Captain Khan of the UNISG second task force leaned on a windowsill and sighed. In the building ahead, the large greyish white apartment block, their enemy laid low somewhere. The famed stalker Strelok, who had been assigned as Khan's bounty target by his employers. When UNISG, the original one led by Major Hernandez, was liquidated, to Khan's dismay they had uncovered very little actual information he needed. But Strelok? He had been an advisor for official Ukrainian state researchers, and if the stories were true, he knew more about it than anyone else. Capturing him would be a jackpot, and Khan desperately needed one. His unit was a mere shadow of its former self, the blasted Redeemed had killed so many of his men, even his second-in-command Clarke had died in those reed-covered swamps by the crimson-armoured bastards.
Not that Khan really cared. Only Clarke and Bauer had been long-time co-workers of his, pushing along the Belt and Road initiative in Central Asia and dealing with potential hiccups in a very subtle ways, or running heavy-handed security on the mines owned by their benefactors in Asia. But neither was someone he considered a friend, in this line of work such was rare, and Khan was here merely to make money. The rewards were astronomical, but trapped here in an empty city, their allies having abandoned them and no clear way out even if Strelok was caught, Khan was beginning to wonder if those rewards were worth all this.
His clients wanted to gather as much information of the Zone and possibly blackmail Ukrainian authorities into co-operation, but every passing day a successful mission seemed less likely. Still, Khan was not one to give in so easily, he would see the mission through out of sheer boneheaded determination. Growing up in the vast and harsh Mongol steppe had not made him a quitter, and he had earned the nickname Khan among his peers for a reason. Khan sighed as Sergeant Němec entered the room to inform him of the squad being ready. Nine men left alongside Khan. They would have to be enough, for he did not know if their mysterious allies would ever return. Taking his rifle, Khan followed his Czech sergeant downstairs to begin the mission of a lifetime.
Not far from the UNISG hideout, Redemption squad that had caused them so much harm was on the move. And while Khan was not aware of his survival, the greatest menace to UNISG so far marched on with them. Never in his, admittedly short life, had Dimka been anticipating a fight this much. All the feelings of being tricked, betrayed and used built up to a crescendo of wrath boiling inside him, and Dimka could feel himself bursting from seams. Finally, after all this hide and seek bullshit, Dimka would face Khan in battle and hopefully kill him, avenging his fallen comrades and perhaps allowing him to find some information that made him, Sevka and Maus free men once more. Yet now was not the time to get all giddy with excitement over it, getting to that point would require winning the battle rapidly drawing closer.
"Dimka, you alright? You look a bit, eh, anxious.", Sanyok asked, walking beside Dimka.
"Sorry, it's just... We are so close to getting some closure. It's been so long that I've held my breath, being sure I would never leave the Zone alive."
"Ah, makes sense. Reminds me of the battle against Sin at the Generators, so much at stake...", Sanyok reminisced.
"And I missed it because of some Sin fucker decided to smash my arm to pieces! Suka blyat!", Dimuha groaned.
"You did get to mastermind a jailbreak of a century afterwards. And shoot bandits, which is super fun.", Dima noted.
"Aye, giving Livid the good news was satisfying, but had I been there at War Lab, perhaps... Perhaps Micha would still be alive.", Dimuha sighed, and Dimka could feel a shift in the group's mood.
"No, you would not. None of us knew what would happen there, and we all knew Micha's fate could have been our own. Had you been in his stead, we would still be inside that spatial anomaly.", Boris explained, and Dimuha seemed to ponder on it for a second before hesitantly nodding.
"Past is not something to dwell on too much. Hindsight is a wonderful tool but also a trap of thoughts and hypotheticals.", Meeker chimed in, having marched in silence beforehand.
"Robot man is right. There's things I'd wish I had done differently, but ultimately there's little we can change. Sometimes the best we can do is take heed from those events.", Rogue remarked.
"Indeed. And make those responsible pay.", Boris muttered quietly.
They continued on in silence, the conversation having turned sour for many of the veterans of the northern campaign. Dimka took the chance a look around him more carefully now, given that this could be one his last days in the Zone. They were travelling down an overgrown road, building blocks reaching for the clouds around them. A couple vehicles had been abandoned by the roadwalks, including a bright yellow DU-47 paving machine. Weirdly enough, moss had began to grow on parts of it, even those seemingly completely metallic. The Zone's flora was a wonder in itself, and especially out here in the Pripyat it seemed to take bizarre forms. Dimka felt some sadness about leaving, this truly was the frontier he had always wanted to find. But he had duties elsewhere... Or at least, he thought he had. Perhaps they would turn him into a desk jockey after this epic of a failure, Dimka pondered.
The scenery changed to a small park. There was interesting, cacophonic statue standing on a yard of a tall and dilapidated building. It was made with the finest Soviet visual styles, meaning it was as blocky as a gopnik's Lada and almost as filled to the brim with depression and broken vodka bottles. Boris signaled for everyone to spread out, and Dimka joined Sevka and Meeker on the left flank. They moved quickly through the bushy area, passing by a couple blind dog corpses. The gunshot wounds on them indicated that either Strelok's entourage had finished them off or the uninvited guests had made their way here before Redemption. Thankfully the former turned out to be the case, as a man in Sunrise/exosuit hybrid waved his hand at them. Seeing Rogue and Stitch among the squad, the man breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thank the Zone, we thought you were goners. Quickly, come inside, Strelok is on the second floor.", the man said.
"We're not that easy to kill. Ran into a few hiccups on the way, that's all.", Rogue replied.
"Like locking yourself into a metal closet.", Dima mocked.
"Alright Kamaz, let the others in but keep this one out. He is a threat to our sanity above all else.", Rogue ordered, and the stalker acting as welcoming committee scoffed.
After some back and forth insults and jokes, the entire group, Dima included, made it inside. Boris ordered Dimuha, Dimka and Dima with him to Strelok's hideout. On the way, Dimka noted that the legendary stalker seemed to only have two men with him, the Kamaz fellow at the door and Yakut, a man in a SEVA suit, guarding another entry into the building. Strelok was not a fan of security, or just confident in his abilities, then, Dimka wondered. On the second floor, Boris led them into a room where Strelok was sitting on an antique, ruined sofa. Dimka was quite surprised at seeing the legend himself, the man was nothing extraordinary by the looks. In fact, had Dimka ran into him in the Big Land, he would've probably taken the man for some lowlife, given his scrawny appearance.
"Boris! I am glad to see you again. I heard Rogue and Stitch got here alright, yet the international agent problem persists?", Strelok asked.
"Indeed. And on top of that, there is a Secret Service force looking for us and them here in the city. Led by Degtyarev of all people.", Boris answered, and Strelok's expressionless face contorted.
"I see. I'm fairly certain he isn't here only because of the interlopers. He's here to bring me back to the Institute.", Strelok sighed.
"Care to elaborate? What beef do you have?", Dima questioned.
"I deserted my post there. Too much oversight yet too little reaction to when I notified the higher ups of alarming development. The complacency of Ukrainian Ministry of the Zone of Alienation is incredible, I warned them years ago that the source of emissions could be utilized as a weapon and they repeatedly denied funding to an expedition to find it. So I took matters to my own hands. I am sure Alexander would have approved personally, but he also has to fulfill his duties. Now, it seems that those duties have brought him to capture me.", Strelok explained.
"If so, you can trust on us to keep your back. I respect the Colonel, but you and I are stalkers while he is a jarhead.", Boris said in a solemn tone, but Dimka did wonder that part of this declaration had to also be related to the two UNISG fugitives within the ranks of Redemption.
"I thank you, Boris, you are as steadfast ally as ever. I hope it does not come to violence, but if we must face him in battle, then so be it. But now, let us prepare for those... UNISG, was it?", Strelok said, and they quickly formed a plan based on Dimka's insight of Khan's character, Strelok's knowledge of the surrounding terrain and Dimuha's battle instinct.
Twenty minutes later orders were barked and battle stations mounted, but just as they were rushing towards the battlefield, an announcement on PDA network made all of the group's devices beep. Pulling out his PDA, Dimka looked at the message and a picture next to it. The SSU cross clearly visible on it, the message ordered Redemption and Strelok's group to stand down as the building was surrounded. Dimka shot a glance outside, seeing men in dark blue Berill and Skat suits mount up weapon's nests and sniping spots.
"Chyort, they got here faster than expected!", Boris shouted in anger and frustration.
"There's a launcher on them, get down!", came a shout from Yakut downstairs.
"This is your last chance. Surrender now and you will face no charges of treason.", Colonel Degtyarev's voice rang in the cold morning air.
"Do we resist? What do we do now?", Sanyok asked.
"Hold the line. Strelok, get the hell out of here, he wants you captured, but we may be able to bargain with him. Rogue, Stitch, Kamaz and Yakut, cover his ass.", Boris ordered.
"But the place is surrounded!", Kamaz protested.
"Not the tunnels below. I used them once before, and I checked this place before. There is an access hatch here. Stalkers, on me, we'll flee for now. Boris, I cannot thank you enough.", Strelok said, gratitude strong in his voice, and Boris only nodded.
"What now?", Dimka queried, looking anxiously at the outside.
"Now, we go out there and convince him that it's not worth his while to be fighting us.", Boris said, grinning, and Dimka gulped.
"That's in-...", he started, but the exoskeleton frame of Boris had already disappeared through the door.
Dimka watched Boris walk over the courtyard. The SSU agents pointed their guns at him, but lowered them once the familiar helmetless Skat-wearing man stepped between them. Degtyarev looked at Boris disapprovingly, as the hiss of his exoskeleton servos and powerpack faded between the husks of buildings. Boris raised his hand as nonchalantly as possible, stopping on his tracks a couple metres from the line of various special operative weapons.
"Good morning, Colonel.", Boris greeted.
"I presume you've come to surrender.", the secret service agent said, raising his eyebrow.
"Not really. You see, we were sitting here, on a picnic, and then you decided to pop in and ruin the fun. How very rude.", Boris replied in a mockinly paternalistic tone.
"Cut the crap, Boris. You disobeyed my orders, breaking the agreement we made in Zaton. And now you're actively helping a fugitive. I know you and Strelok have history, but me taking him back to the Institute is for the best of us all.", Degtyarev said, infuriated.
"I broke the agreement? Colonel, we agreed to be allies. Then you spat on that by telling me that my men were no longer welcome, after we had fought and bled for your cause. We have been nothing but loyal this entire time, yet we are discarded us the second we had done our task.", Boris retaliated.
"It was becoming harder and harder to keep it under wraps, especially when I had to bail your man out from Zhurov's custody. He lost a lot of good men in Cordon, I was in boiling hot water afterwards. But you are right, I should have been less blunt about it. And I apologize. But I also know you are stalling. As a sign of goodwill, hand over Strelok and your men can return to Meadow unharmed.", Degtyarev proclaimed.
"No deal. Strelok himself told us that he was merely shackled by the Institute, not allowed to combat threats to the Zone and Ukraine due to big shots withdrawing funding. Yet ever since coming to the Zone, he has led an effective raid against the resurgent Monolith, blocked Sin's grand plan and is now allowing us to finally cut down UNISG by voluntarily acting as bait.", Boris countered, adding the last point as a little white lie.
"That may be true, but I have my orders, orders which I have had to bend far too much already. I'm sorry, but it has to be this way.", Degtyarev sighed.
"Then it must. Cut me down then, for I will not abandon my allies. Unlike you.", Boris spat, and he could see even Degtyarev's facade of calm splinter slightly as he flinched at the insult.
Boris held his breath, knowing that death was staring at him from the rifle barrels of Degtyarev's men. The colonel hesitated, torn between duty to the government and personal feelings towards the inhabitants of the Zone. It was as if he was reconsidering the entire fabric of his being, and what he had actually been sent to the Zone to do. Boris would never learn what his decision had been, as the rightmost SSU agent was struck by a bullet cracking his helmet open. Two grenades landed on the feet of the group, and Boris lunged onward by instinct, kicking one of them further away. The blast from the other one tossed him to the side, his Absolver armour sheltering him and the special forces operators from worst of the blast. They were disoriented and stunned by the explosion, however, and gunfire rained on them. Two more SSU agents died, when Boris began pushing them towards the building, out of the fire.
"It's UNISG, they found us!", Boris shouted over the fire as the six survivors of the ambush darted across the yard towards the building.
Sniper fire struck the ground around them, and finally the foes showed themselves. Two UNISG troopers from Khan's squad, clad in looted Monolith Nosorog armour, jerked upwards from a nearby basement and began advancing. Their movements betrayed inexperience with exoskeletons, moving too quick and risking injuries to themselves or others around them, but the venerable armours would still protect them greatly. Dimuha led a charge out of the building block to buy some time for the retreating SSU, Sanyok and Sevka blasting at the UNISG stormtroopers while Dimka, Dima and Meeker kept the heads of the snipers down. The Nosorog battleplates took a beating, but given that their armour was thicker than a renegade with brain damage, they continued on unhampered. One flicked the launcher sight on his rifle and took aim, Dimka realizing a second too late what he was attempting to do.
"Grenade, spread out!", he screamed, but just that second he saw one of the SSU agent's Skat armour take a direct hit.
Dustcloud settled over the entire yard, and gunfire continued. Through it, Boris emerged to the half-circle formed by Dimuha's trio, dragging Degtyarev behind him. Another SSU agent limped out of the blast zone as well, holding a butchered but alive operator alift. Rest of the UNISG force had appeared, and they now pushed over the yard. Dimuha's armour took a hit, yet he soldiered on despite a broken rib and kept shooting at the advancing Nosorog pair. One of his shots lodged itself between the ceramic plates, keeping enough momentum to break through and strike the man's heart. Sergeant Němec breathed his last sigh and fell down.
"Fall back inside, we can't fight them in the open at this state!", Boris ordered as Degtyarev started to come back to his senses.
"We were fools, letting ourselves get ambushed like this.", the colonel muttered.
"Well you are special forces, alright.", Dimuha growled and shot his last burst as the machine gun ran dry.
They stumbled inside, where Meeker took the wounded SSU trooper further in for emergency treatment. Seeing the ex-Monolithian after such a long time, Degtyarev gave him a slight nod and Meeker smiled faintly. The others took positions on the windows, trying to remain in cover while the building was peppered by bullets. Dimka tried to spot Khan among the attackers, but the swarm of angry lead mosquitoes made it difficult. The lone Nosorog trooper lumbered on, struggling to control the suit. Boris told Dimka to focus on him with the Vykhlop, given that it had the best chance of punching through, while the others kept pressure on the other infiltrators zigzagging between cover towards the defences.
Dimka did as ordered, waiting for the agent to make a mistake. He was clever about using cover, only exposing himself for a brief second, but his inexperience with the large machine wrapped around him showed. When darting between a broken car and the corner of commieblock, his exoskeleton shot upwards with too much force. Shocked momentarily by the strength of the machine, this second of confusion gave Dimka enough time to center the scope. Aiming between the breastplate and Spartan helmet, Dimka squeezed the trigger and felt the kick of his rifle. Blood spurted from the wound, and the man slouched down like a powerless automaton. Yelling triumphantly, Dimka cycled the bolt of his rifle and took another target. With the armoured spearhead of UNISG broken, their attack slowed down, giving the initiative to Redemption.
"Target left, Dima and Sanyok, hose it down. Dimuha, Sevka and Degtyarev, on me, let's counter-attack!", Boris shouted.
"Since when are you ordering SSU officers around, stalker?", the lone surviving SSU trooper asked angrily.
"Since when my men did not run into an ambush and require the assistance of the men they were supposed to arrest.", Boris retorted and Degtyarev groaned.
"We wouldn't be in this situation if you had surrendered.", Degtyarev commented.
"Or if you had allowed us to ambush the UNISG.", Dima replied.
"Shut the hell up, all of you, and let's drive the fuckers back.", Dimuha ordered in turn, and this time everyone shot back into attention, realizing the folly of bickering in the middle of a battle.
Boris' Absolver ran through the dust and smoke, followed by Degtyarev, Sevka and Dimuha coming out of the building guns blazing. Dimka managed to squeeze a shot between car windows into the shoulder of a UNISG rifleman, killing him on the spot. The shoe was in the other foot now, with three heavily armoured stalkers bearing down on the internationals' force, Sevka giving fire support behind the spearhead. Three UN troopers keeled over after a sustained barrage of sniper and shotgun fire, all the while Boris and Dimuha suppressed the others with their machine guns. Degtyarev was not idle either, having used the suppression to flank around using the dense bushes. He was now at the same monument Dimka had admired earlier, and his Abakan racked up a tally of two more spies when he sprung the trap. These two had been hiding behind a rusting hulk of a ZAZ car, when two bursts from the odd rifle struck them down. That was when a pack of blind dogs and pseudodogs burst from the foliage, attacking Boris' group. They had to redirect their fire towards the mutants, with Dima and Sanyok opening up on the last hideout of the remnants of UNISG.
Now, the last two UNISG troopers were visibly panicking. Having expected to smash the defenders in a calculated ambush, they had missed the Redemption squad in the building and paid for it. They took off in a desperate last ditch attempt to escape. Dimka was watching them through his scope, angling for a shot yet failing to get a proper view of them through all the junk and flora dotting the field ahead. He was sure Khan wasn't dead yet, and seeing the battle draw to a close, the hotheaded part of him let loose. Anger gripping him, he left the Vykhlop on the windowsill, grabbed his handguns and stormed out with vengeance on his mind. Dima yelled after him but Dimka was already far ahead, racing across the asphalt to be the one to strike the final blow. Memories of the betrayal, his dead comrades, the framing of his allies as traitors and the attack on the checkpoint in Jupiter flooded to his mind and quickened his pace. Gripping the guns, he made it past Boris, Dimuha and Degtyarev who were still fighting the mutants.
"What the hell are you doing?", Boris shouted to him.
"Getting my payback.", Dimka replied quickly and continued.
He heard Boris shout something more, but more gunshots masked the order. Dimka continued, unwilling to let his most hated adversary escape. The two survivors were running ahead, towards the grocery store, when Dimka opened fire. He was using both guns simultaneously, so the fire was as accurate as that of a drunk bandit, but using the time old classic tactic of "throw enough shit at the wall and some of it will stick", he managed to cut down one of the UNISG troopers. Bullet hole in his back, the man fell down face first like a ragdoll. The last survivor made it inside, jumping over the makeshift barricade and forcing the wooden doors open.
Dimka was hot on the man's heels, and soon stepped inside as well. Turning on his night-vision in the dark corridor, he found the store to be a mess of doors and small rooms. A proper labyrinth. He continued down the corridor, guns trained on any possible ambush location. But the further he went, the more nerve-wracking the experience became. He saw no sign of his enemy, yet every shadow, every dark corner, seemed to hide him. Then, crossing one corridor, three shots rang out and Dimka felt sharp pain surge into his brain like a sledgehammer striking it from the inside. Dimka dropped to his knees, blood flowing down his leg. Khan stepped through the door, where three bullet holes had now appeared on the old wood.
"Torodov? You traitorous bastard, you're helping the enemy?", Khan said in an astonished tone.
"You would know traitors, you lapdog. The blood of my comrades is in your hands.", Dimka growled.
"So? You're soldiers, we're soldiers, our task is to kill one another by any means necessary. You got bested, and now the last of your company of idiots will die.", Khan replied calmly.
"Wrong.", someone else said, and a shotgun blast struck Khan in the centre of his torso, tossing him against the wall.
Sevka stepped out into the corridor and saw Khan attempt to reach for a sidearm despite his grievous wounds. Dimka, wounded and bleeding yet still sound of mind, fired him in the limb. Khan screamed in pain and let go of the pistol.
"It's your company that meets its end here.", Sevka said, and raised the shotgun.
"Perhaps... But... We are not the only ones after Strelok. You'll... see.", Khan replied, barely able to speak due to the agony of his wounds.
Dimka had had enough, and his revolver fired once more. The last of UNISG infiltrators died with a simple sigh and .45 ACP bullet in his skull. Major Hernandez's men, the original unit of Dimka and Sevka, had been avenged. Sevka stepped next to his friend, stuck a stimpack into his arm and bandaged his wound. Once colour began returning to the Bulgarian stalker's cheeks, Sevka sighed and reprimanded his comrade.
"I thought you learned from that scuffle with Skull that rushing off alone gets you killed."
"I'm a slow learner, alright?", Dimka argued, grinning.
"That much is clear. Now, let's check his pockets for our "get out of jail free" card.", Sevka proposed, and Dimka nodded.
They went through Khan's belongings, checking through the various pockets of his Mk. II suit. There was little to find there, but in his backbag, there was a document detailing some of the mission parametres set by Khan's employers. The liquidation of original UNISG was mentioned among them, and Dimka also pocketed the encrypted PDA of the traitor, hoping that Maus could decrypt it.
"That alone should help, but this here might be a jackpot. Alright, Mr. De Luca, seems like we're off the hook now.", Dimka commented, shaking the PDA.
"Let's hope so. But what do you think Khan meant when he said there are others looking for Strelok?", Sevka asked.
"Those men in black suits perhaps? I wouldn't worry, they ran with their tails between their legs when we stormed the hideout yesterday.", Dimka scoffed.
Sevka nodded hesitantly, looking at the dead captain laying on the floor. Yet Dimka's comment was quickly revealed to be dead wrong, when the sound of a helicopter engine echoed through out the city. Outside, Boris and Degtyarev raised their eyes towards the sky, and the black helicopter they had seen leave before now approached yet again.

2023.06.05 12:20 lifemedicalsupply1 What Are the Essential CPAP Supplies for Home Health?

In this article, we will discuss the essential CPAP supplies for home health in McAllen. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is commonly used to treat sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. CPAP machines deliver a constant flow of pressurized air to keep the airways open and ensure uninterrupted breathing throughout the night. To effectively manage sleep apnea at home, it is important to have the necessary CPAP supplies. Let's explore the essential supplies needed for home health CPAP therapy.
Essential CPAP Supplies for Home Health
When it comes to CPAP therapy at home, the following supplies are essential for proper usage and maintenance:
1. CPAP Machine
The CPAP machine is the core component of sleep apnea treatment. It delivers a steady flow of pressurized air through a mask, helping to keep the airways open during sleep. The machine should be selected based on individual needs and prescribed pressure settings. McAllen offers a range of CPAP machines suitable for home use.
2. CPAP Mask
CPAP masks come in various styles, including nasal masks, nasal pillows, and full-face masks. The mask is worn over the nose or nose and mouth to deliver the pressurized air from the CPAP machine. Choosing the right mask is crucial for comfort and effective therapy. It is recommended to try different mask types to find the one that provides a proper fit and minimal leakage.
3. CPAP Tubing
CPAP tubing connects the CPAP machine to the mask, allowing the pressurized air to flow. The tubing should be durable, flexible, and easy to clean. It is important to regularly inspect the tubing for any signs of wear or damage and replace it when necessary to ensure optimal therapy.
4. CPAP Filters
CPAP filters are responsible for trapping airborne particles, dust, and allergens, preventing them from entering the CPAP machine and the user's airway. Filters should be regularly replaced to maintain proper air quality and prevent clogging. There are two types of filters: disposable filters that need regular replacement and non-disposable filters that require periodic cleaning.
5. CPAP Humidifier
CPAP humidifiers add moisture to the pressurized air delivered by the CPAP machine, helping to alleviate dryness and irritation in the airways and nasal passages. Humidifiers can be integrated into the CPAP machine or come as separate units. Using a humidifier is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing dryness or discomfort during CPAP therapy.
6. CPAP Cleaning and Maintenance Supplies
Proper cleaning and maintenance of CPAP equipment are essential for hygiene and to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. The following supplies are useful for CPAP cleaning:
Distilled water: Distilled water is recommended for use in the CPAP humidifier to prevent mineral buildup.

2023.06.05 12:00 AutoModerator Daily r/LawnCare No Stupid Questions Thread

Please use this thread to ask any lawn care questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. This includes weed, fungus, insect, and grass identification. For help on asking a question, please refer to the "How to Get the Most out of Your Post" section at the top of the sidebar.
Check out the sidebar if you're interested in more information on plant hardiness zones, identifying problems, weed control, fertilizer, establishing grass, and organic methods. Also, you may contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for local info.
How to Get the Most out of Your Post:
Include a photo of the problem. You can upload to imgur.com for free and it's easy to do. One photo should contain enough information for people to understand the immediate area around the problem (dense shade, extremely sloped, etc.). Other photos should include close-ups of the grass or weed in question: such as this, this, or this. The more photos or context to the situation will help us identify the problem and propose some solutions.

2023.06.05 10:42 giada_z Trying to read a book - the saga

It's a bank holiday today, so I decided to do something productive and read the book I've been beating myself up for postponing.

My saga started at 8:30 am. Can't read without coffee, so I got to the kitchen and started to pick up what I needed to brew some, and realized that the dish I use for filtering my cofee was in the washing machine, so I started to put out the clean dishes. During the boring task I wanted to drink some water so I went to the bedroom to get my water bottle. I went to the bathroom instead and forgot what I was doing because it was sunny outside and I realised I hadn't applied any sunblock yet, so I washed my face, and while changing my clothes I saw my water bottle on the bedside table, which reminded me of the dishes, so I went back to the kitchen, finished putting out the dishes only to realise I hadn't applied sunblock, but on my way to the bathroom, I saw my water bottle beside the bed again, picked it up and drank some water. I then went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, got back to the kitchen, and finished making the coffee. While the coffee was brewing I went to the bedroom to pick up my Kindle, only to realise it was out of battery. That's ok, I'll charge it an apply sunclock on my face. I went to the living room where the charger was, put the Kindle to charge. The power socket is beside a plant so I remembered it's Monday, plant-watering day. This took me 5 or 10 minutes without any distractions. Then I finally applied the damn sunblock because I saw my spray one sitting on my desk (I usually leave it inside my purse, but guess I forgot to store it last time I used it).

I served myself some coffee and sat down to read from my phone while the Kindle charged. I checked my email, checked the delivery date of something I bought last week, doom-scrolled for about 10 minutes, and then remembered about the book, so I tried to log in to Amazon but couldn't log in because I recently had to wipe my phone and lost my one-time-password authenticator app, so I had to go through a verification process. Need my computer for that, so I went to the other room to pick it up and saw some towels that had to be washed, so I picked them up and put them on the washing machine, turned the washing machine on, took the clothes that were air drying on the hanger since yesterday, and started to fold them in the living room. It was quiet so decided I wanted some music and turned on the tv - almost clicked on Netflix but remembered that I wanted to go to Youtube, focus! I chose some music and realized I never picked up my coffee, so I went back to the kitchen, whipped the counters, went back to the living room, and continued folding the clothes. Went to the other room to store the clothes I had just folded, got back to the living room, picked up my phone, and saw Amazon open - oh shoot, the computer for the verification process!

I picked up the computer, turned it on, and of course, it was on battery saving mode, so I went to the room again to pick up the charger. I saw the cat's litter box that I should have cleaned yesterday. Made a mental note about it, not starting something else now - I'm getting back to it after a few chapters of my book! Got to the living room, put the charger on the notebook, and checked my email again, no news. Amazon requires a picture of my document, so I went to get the document and realized the bed wasn't made, so I cleaned up a bit in the bedroom and stopped mid-way because I remembered that I had to take a picture of my document. I took a picture of it, sat on the computer to upload it but then decided to write my mental process so far so I don't forget how ridiculously ridiculous I am. This must have taken me a long time because it's already 10:00 am. Back to the verification process.

Ok, I had to install an app on my computer to transfer the file, did that, and uploaded it to Amazon but got an error. I realized that I can buy it from the Kindle device without OTP, so I'll just wait until it's charged. Now I'm going to put my document back where it belongs so I don't lose it again, and then I'll clean the cat's litter box. Once I'm done I'll (hopefully) have enough battery to start reading.
My half-drank coffee got cold, btw.

2023.06.05 08:31 samkoesnadi White noise blocks attention to specific voices, thus enchances focus

[text is generated by ChatGPT, I am too lazy to write this time]
White noise can be helpful for improving focus and concentration by creating a consistent and steady background sound that masks distractions. It works by reducing the contrast between environmental noises and the task at hand, allowing your brain to filter out irrelevant sounds and maintain concentration on the task.
White noise is a type of noise that contains all audible frequencies in equal amounts. It can be generated using various sources, including white noise machines, mobile apps, websites, or even common household items like fans or air conditioners. Some people find it beneficial to use headphones or earphones to listen to white noise, especially in noisy environments.
The effectiveness of white noise for focus can vary from person to person, as everyone has different preferences and sensitivities to auditory stimuli. It's important to experiment and find the type of white noise that works best for you. Some individuals may prefer pure white noise, while others might find other ambient sounds like nature sounds, rain sounds, or instrumental music more helpful.
Additionally, while white noise can be beneficial for focus, it's worth noting that it may not be the ideal solution for everyone or for every task. Some tasks might require a quiet environment without any background noise, while others may benefit from specific types of music or complete silence. It's important to find the approach that works best for your specific needs and preferences.
Remember, white noise is just one strategy among many that can help improve focus. It's also important to consider other factors that contribute to concentration, such as minimizing distractions, managing time effectively, creating a conducive work environment, and practicing good self-care habits.
