| June 3, 2019 - a stray pit bull is found in Philadelphia and taken to PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society), a no-kill shelter. Foreseeing she's going to ruin their live-release stats for the year, they quickly punt this large, muscular, unfriendly adult pit bull to the city's open-intake shelter, Philadelphia Animal Care & Control (ACCT). There she is named Peggy. Peggy at intake Rescuers almost immediately begin marketing her as a cruel victim of breeding and dog-fighting. They take photos showing tiny bite marks on her face as evidence of the fighting history. https://preview.redd.it/e792005dzi4b1.png?width=688&format=png&auto=webp&s=a799cda531dc6849106aea375f4b6af277a691f5 https://preview.redd.it/gqjbepghzi4b1.png?width=820&format=png&auto=webp&s=26898f14755bb6a2aa2ba9e870b300f87014c839 In a bout of rescue-on-rescue violence, Chester County Dog Tails (PA) slams PAWS for flipping the dog to ACCT. https://preview.redd.it/t30tqb1xzi4b1.png?width=794&format=png&auto=webp&s=40b68a3dc0cbf010021c8bbb18a64eb60e56a169 It's fairly obvious from the first that she's dog-aggressive. Locked like an arrow, tail up Tail up, stiff as a board lips lifted, growling; unseen volunteers are babytalking in the background, calling her \"mama\" and \"good job!\" - but are also pulling her away the nanosecond she growls Enough of the backstory and the reality. On to the show. ACCT Philly releases the rescue-only Peggy to a woman who represents an approved ACCT Philly rescue partner - ie, a rescue group which ACCT Philly has previously vetted and ok'd to pull animals. It seemingly does not strike ACCT Philly as odd that the rescue group this woman represents is a cat rescue. https://preview.redd.it/0puahwbc7j4b1.png?width=686&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b3a2e8bc578d7c0126088ee9e11ed75d6aebeae And then it all falls apart. The dog's aggression becomes unavoidable, and PURR says they're scheduling euthanasia. And just like that, we're off to the races with rescue hysteria. First up - a size-minimizing, flattering photo. Check Next, we need a victim story. check And here's the full explanation per the founder of the cat rescue. https://preview.redd.it/uszn5j9r2j4b1.png?width=331&format=png&auto=webp&s=e811265c85ec0aa8501690b2324f56d1dee2baeb https://preview.redd.it/m0qk0bww2j4b1.png?width=313&format=png&auto=webp&s=92f56e35bc1a589a55692204e399b4e25205ba85 https://preview.redd.it/6qm741qz2j4b1.png?width=295&format=png&auto=webp&s=70d6380aa78d4b22c1de27600c1977814ccb7fe4 https://preview.redd.it/10sz1y323j4b1.png?width=307&format=png&auto=webp&s=728bd4b88309b30011c818db27d955ef17767209 https://preview.redd.it/ogg09il43j4b1.png?width=292&format=png&auto=webp&s=6bb6bfec365e56d25f7f7a87299a500903af0874 And here's the enraged back and forth between the PURR founder and a nice rescue lady who wants someone to save Peggy/Nala. The rescue lady goes first, responding to the above comments with There is misinformation in the post and i am going to delete it. Please feel free to post it elsewhere. I believe \** will have read it by now. I will continue in good faith to try to find a rescue/fosteadopter for nala who deserves the best life possible. I also received information from the foster which has not made me change my opinion of Nala. I am just a dog lover trying in good faith to save a dog who deserves a second chance. The funds are there and many volunteers are working to find suitable safe placement and much needed training. We just need the time. Like you, we were not aware that the need was so urgent. Thank you!* PURR founder misinformation????? Are you kidding me?? Just because the facts don’t conform to what you want them to be does not make them untrue. You are advocating for a dangerous dog and you delete a post that lays out all the information? You are reckless and deleting my heartfelt post shows a complete and utter lack of integrity. I hope your followers have enough sense to stop following somebody who would hide the truth. rescue ladyI don't want to argue with you. I'm stating that that is not the info that was communicated to me from the foster. We all agree that she has issues and needs training. That's what we're trying to get her. Many of the ACCT dogs have done wonderful after decompression and training. Hoping an experienced rescue/adopter steps up so nala can get the help she needs. You read the post from the foster's mother that was from the heart. Peace be with you +++ . I need to tend to some family matters. PURR founderhow do you not realize the seriousness of the harm that Nala can do? How can you attempt to hide her aggression? Do you not understand how irresponsible that is? She has bit numerous people without any cue and she has driven people to go so far as to jump on a countertop because of her aggression. She has lunged for other dogs simply by seeing them and it is nothing short of a miracle that she was able to be controlled. I spoke at length with the foster tonight. There is no question that Nala has a wonderful side but she also has a dangerous side. She bit the foster’s father in the face! The poor foster has been so broken down by people attacking her and telling her how horrible she is to even consider euthanasia that she is going to have a breakdown. She has done everything possible for Nala, she has given up the last four months of her life to allow her to decompress and she still shows random aggression and unprovoked bites. You are putting human lives in danger by the advocating you are doing that is not telling the whole story. A new voice jumps in with this new voice, incidentally, belongs to a member of Your New Best Friend (YNBF) Dog Rescue in NJ. Hassled PURR Founder responds " you clearly do not understand the situation" PURR Founder she has bitten four times since being with a foster. That number is concerning simply on the face of it but it is even more so because the foster lets very few people come to her house anymore because of Nala’s volatility. The foster had to move her own dog to her parents house because Nala attacked him. PURR founder was pissed. I have taken screenshots of all of these posts starting from yesterday. If somehow Nala is “saved” and goes on to hurt somebody, I will make it my life’s goal to hold these people accountable. Especially \**, who is not telling the whole truth while she advocates about the situation and dared to delete my post that laid out all the facts.* Fascinating response from one poster to another poster who was apparently blocked, as her comment is gone yeahhhhhhhh...that was crazy. I was hearing all of this loud commotion outside and decided to stay safe in the cat room. And my grand introduction to you was having you stumble in like a drowned rat and telling me how you almost were eaten by a dog. That was all I needed to know about that dog. The upshot was, I believe, that the dog was euthanized. submitted by nomorelandfills to BanPitBulls [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 22:37 sg630123 Cool Philanthropy Week Ideas
Good Afternoon everyone!
I was elected as the Philanthropy Chair for my fraternity and I'm wondering if you guys have any ideas on events we can do for our Philo Week. We partner with a local animal shelter in our city so we would like animal-themed events. For our most recent Philo Week, we did a dog photo shoot where we brought dogs and charged students for pictures with the dogs. Thanks everyone!

Memory Transcription Subject: Barkim, forsaken krakotl veteran.
Date: December 20, 2136 .~*~.
I came before Captain Sovlin and Captain Kalsim. I remember watching Kalsim train. I doubt he remembers me. My career made me into a captain pretty fast. Faster than most. I had repelled five Arxur raids while in control of the bridge. My crew were brave enough to trust me and my insane methods. Letting a colony world fall was unacceptable in my eyes. We were the vigilant, always ready to warp in ten minutes or less. The federation as whole didn't seem to understand how much value a few extra minutes bought for the settlers meant. Even if I had to order a retreat, tens of thousands would survive because they managed to find a place to weather the raid while the Arxur were distracted.
I was a hero.
Rumbling laughter and howls make my slow trod falter, and I look though a window into the recreational room. There's several humans at a table holding scraps of paper and barking in a jovial mood. They're not masked, and my feathers ruffle looking at them. A flicker of movement on the table catches my eye, and I finally spot the Dossur in their midst, almost completely hidden in a bunker of coins.
A Dossur beating an entire group of pack predators by himself. I never would've believed it, but I'm still not surprised it would be Alvin of all people. That little runt was the only reason I've managed to hold onto my sanity for so long. He was braver than I, and he brought me back even when I was at my worst, again and again and again. He was the first to run to our predatory saviors back at the facility. And he was the last to leave, running back into the fighting and leading a human doctor to me to stop the stray bullet from taking me into Inatala's grace.
I left him to his card game, faintly overhearing one of the humans complain about being a several years running Texas Holdem champion. Alvin's response sounded very much like him, asking if he wanted to bet the actual crown next to add to his growing wealth.
Eventually I found myself in front of a door. Inside was a small room. One wall contained a wooden desk carved with enough craftsmanship to rival old Krakotl wood carvers. The desk was cluttered with cylinders and writing apparatuses, and a primitive writing board resting on the wall above it displayed several print outs of various people. Relatives. Descendants. People that had enough empathy in them to take back the few lucky souls that still had people they could trust. The computer underneath it was not active, but if it where I'd imagine there would be encrypted communication logs trying to reconnect with those few love ones. Plans to reunite them. Promises to protect them under this faction's umbrella.
It was strange, that this group of humans wasn't desired by the rest of their kind. They take more direct, brutal action than their leaders, but they act to save lives. On the opposite wall was a locker. Inside were several firearms of Human make, and multiple emergency atmospheric suits. Many were for human use, but some were Federation standard. A pair of boots and engineering equipment rested on the floor before it, scuffed and well worn. There's a strange logo of an orange planet on the back of a jacket hanging from a hook nearby, and an even stranger article of cloth called an 'arm band.' The arm band has a large tree sewn into it, flanked by two prey animals and a river. The human I'm visiting was part of that arm band group, named after a tree of all things.
You couldn't get me to harbor a guess as to why they'd name themselves after a tree.
The far wall was rather simple. A faded green paint coat, covered in various anti-predator posters. One was of a human in a blue space suit, the visor open and revealing an endless pit of teeth. Another depicting a feral, over-proportioned human salivating over a dressed, screaming krakotl on a dinner plate. A third poster depicted some venlil collared and chained in place, stuck in some multi-colored wrapping that went up its legs halfway.
There was a mirror beside the posters, and I winced at the terrible shape I was in. I'd abused myself too much after I was freed. Even after stopping, I was still recovering. Looking past the mirror, there is a large banner of a green Terran letter. A few paper photos are plastered around it of smiling humans in strange places, and my eye always lingers over those photos despite the many times I've seen them. Earth looked lovely. I wished Kalsim had called off his mission.
Feeling like an intruder, I turned my attention to the last part of the wall. A set of black out curtains were flush with it, concealing a human roost built into the structure itself. If I was lucky, she would be there.
"Hope?"
Come on, you're better than a chicken. Carefully, I lifted the curtain. "Hope?"
There she was. The one human I wasn't bothered by on this station. I can hear the music playing now that the curtain is out of the way, and the thick visor over her eyes tells me she's watching a video or simulation of some kind. I hesitate, watching her in her own world. What fur she does have is short and remarkably dense, and she has such a unique coloration that I would swear she was one of a kind if she hadn't mentioned having family. A tan complexion, painted over by splotches and stripes of white and violets that humans can't see with their own eyes. Her face is relaxed, mouth slightly open in wonder.
The human that helped staunch my bleeding, and gently broke the news to me of
everything that had happened while I was locked up. The same one that kept me from pulling myself apart immediately after, and tried to find a way to keep me busy as my whole world went up in flames. A stern, capable person that could make decisions under pressure and wanted to save lives. While not a leader, I could see it in her. She had mettle.
She was completely exposed. Had I been the old me and not the one that woke up in a PD cell after a Sillis conference, I might've followed Kalsim's path. A talon in the right spot, and humans die fast.
"Hope?" Even raising my voice, she didn't hear me right in front of her. "Hope!"
As much as I respected her, coming this far in my state was exhausting. I, being a former fleet captain, hero, and outstanding Federation officer, decidedly acted like a child in that moment and pecked her.
"AAAAAAAH!"
"
AIIIIIIIIIEEEEE"
I let out the most undignified shriek in my life and fell over backwards, landing on my tail feathers and sending a jolt up my spine. I forgot that since Hope was human, by extension she could be loud. Really, really, unfathomably loud.
There was a blur of limbs and Hope was sitting up, visor wielded as a bludgeon. She made eye contact with me, and I realized all my remaining feathers had poofed up.
"
Blu!" She scolded, face curling in frustration. "What in the matter is-
Blu?! You're not in your room?"
Shock, this time. I felt some shame in how low my standards had fallen, and smoothed down my feathers properly. My poor heart was already recovering and I stood, puffing out my chest.
"I... I wanted to go for a walk. See what you humans could do with a dated station like this."
"You're in my room."
"That appears to be the case." I pushed a ball of dust across the floor with a talon and regarded it absently, turning my head and keeping an eye on Hope. "It needs cleaning."
With speed I was anticipating, she hurled a pillow at me. I caught the assault and rerouted it, catching her in the face. She leaned back and laughed, a noise that calmed what was left of my quaking heart as I hopped forward. She offered a hand that I accepted, and she helped pull me onto the edge of the bed.
"You offered to show me your skies." I began, feeling uncertain. "Is that possible?"
"Yeah," she said. "Here-"
Grace put a hand on my chest and pushed down. A profound sense of horror washed over me as my back hit the soft bedding.
She wouldn't- no. She can't- is it even- when have I last- Inatala please- I realized with a start that Hope leaned past me, grabbing her pad. She plugged an odd attachment into it and fastened it to the wall by her head, and flopped over beside me. My immediate terror faded into embarrassment, and my face warmed at my own stupidity as she pulled the curtain closed. It became dark, and I felt her shift slightly until the ceiling above us started to slowly glow. Her pad booted up and began to project an image up there, and I felt my initial problems fade as a blue sky opened up before us.
"Oh wow." I breathed, realizing it was a video as a plane flew overhead. I forgot myself for a moment, looking up into an alien sky as clouds blew by at a lazy pace. The jet stream slowly lost its uniformity and stretched out, facing away as other clouds replaced it. I could hear wind and alien birds chirping, and for a long moment I was there. I was really there.
Storm clouds, massive weather fronts, all began drifting by. There was a dull rumble of thunder. I started as a bird flew very close overhead.
"What was that?"
"Woodpecker. Some can get pretty big back home. Not as big as you, Blu."
"Is it really this serene? Where was this taken?"
"My backyard. There was a massive hill out back. I used to lay there for hours when I was younger. Lived at the edge of a village. The only noise back there was the odd combustion engine or farming drone. Sometimes someone firing off a gun or listening to music loudly."
"You lived in the countryside? You're a pilot!"
Hope chuckled softly. "Surprise! There's some pretty sharp people that don't live in the cities, Blu. Especially us humans. My father could repair any farm equipment you threw at him going back a hundred years. Of course, I also have an uncle that thinks the Queen of England doesn't exist, so it probably levels out." She finished, sighing and reaching up. She swiped her finger across the ceiling and suddenly the skies changed.
They were orange now. More clouds. I felt a familiar pang in my chest thinking of a Nishtal sunset, but I kept quiet as the skies gradually changed. I was surprised to see such a vibrant shade of orange, then a sharp streak of violet bleed into it. There was red as well. A lot of red.
"Why red?"
"Oh, that. Massive forest fire in Canada. That's a country above mine. The smoke changed the colors for a little while. It made for a nice view."
That it did. I got lost in the footage, and started losing track of time. Only the occasional creak of the bedding kept me from forgetting where I really was. Hope seemed content watching the skies, and it dawned on me how close I was to her.
I'm acclimating well. Maybe I'll be like Alvin in no time. When the skies slowly turned to night I was amazed at the stars that came out. Constellations I was unfamiliar with, patterns and swirls of light that could never be seen from a Federation city. I heard Hope inhale and reach out, changing the scene before it could linger anymore. "How about a time lapse. I've got some good ones."
"I don't know what that is."
"Really? Someone sets up a camera in a nice spot and records hours or days of footage. They take everything they've documented and then speed it up to a couple minutes." Hope starts a new video. I'm taken back by it, how a cloud bank flows around a mountain pass like water. It looks like a stream, where the clouds shift with each wind current change, flowing back and forth as minutes are turned into seconds.
It's stunning. Hope switches to another one, and another. I'm struck dumb with wonder, baffled at how not one other creature out of the hundreds of species thought to do anything similar over the course of the Federation. Massive mountain tops, where humans blur through trails like plasma. Prairies with storm cells moving in, lighting and rain sweeping through and giving it new light as the terrain is rapidly drenched. A large road where thousands of human vehicles streak by and leave brief paint trails in their wake.
"Thank you, Hope."
She nods, an odd gesture of acknowledgement, before changing the video back to a more slow paced skyline. After several minutes of silence, I feel a weight forming in my chest. Slowly, my wonder begins to crumble.
"How many confidants were you able to find? For the others?"
Hope shifted to look at me, turning her head and making my feathers tingle slightly at how close her face was to me. She looked back up at the sky. "Seven."
"There were forty that wanted to leave as quickly as they could. What happens to them?"
"We're letting them go. Even if they don't want anything to do with predators, they're going to find out avoiding my species is pretty hard. We're going to give them access to the network anyways, in case they want our help down the road."
"And the rest of us?"
"I'm helping the ones that want to go back to a somewhat normal life find that. There's several planets they can go to, and countless colonies. They'll be placed close to the support network in case there's trouble and they need to come back, or need financial assistance or help integrating."
Hope had mentioned something about 'shelters being a safe place' for us break outs, but had never elaborated on that.
"And what about the others that want to stay?" I noticed Hope scowl at the skies, her face forlorn.
"The ones that want to stay and help us fight are welcome to. It's not all dangerous- being part of the network isn't as risky. Helping the ones that wanted to go back to living, or finding others that got lost or fell through the cracks. It... it feels wrong asking anyone we rescued to fight and die for us. We don't want clouded judgement and people thinking they owe us that. But, there are a lot wanting to join our ranks in more aggressive operations. We're making them combat ready, teaching them how we wage wars so that they don't turn into their overseers."
I lay there for a long moment, staring at the open skies above us. "What about me?" I asked quietly.
"You're not excluded from those choices, Blu."
"You read my file. You know who I was. What I would've done if I didn't end up in that place. You'd really just let me go?"
"If you wanted to go, then yes."
The simple way in which she states it confused me. Like such a choice wouldn't cause issues or risks.
"But, we've been thinking about a better choice for you."
Oh? "The Mazics are turning into the next Paltan Combine. Their newest influx of refugees were the released Krakotl."
My chest tightens. Nishtal is no more, razed to the bedrock and dead. We had been abandoned by our neighbors, our home slaughtered well before our true nature was revealed. And in the same year, the Federation deploys over forty thousand ships to take back a world that left behind their rule. Billions of loyal citizens captured and destined for a bloody fate were worth less than billions that seceded peacefully.
And then the humans brokered a deal with the Arxur and saved their souls. This was yet another time they did the impossible.
"We were thinking they could use a strong anchor to roost against. Someone that they might remember. A leader that they can trust."
I turned my head to directly face Hope, but she was still looking at the skies.
"I... they hate you humans."
"They do."
"I can't try and lead them, and sell out anyone that still doesn't believe in the UN's cause. I can't betray them." I chirped, dread worming into my gut.
"We wouldn't expect you too. We don't want you too. Blu-" Hope turned her gaze on me, her voice sincere. "We want them to find the right path. They deserve peace and security. They don't deserve to live in fear and rot with hatred. We don't... my group does not want yours to suffer over what your government did, even if the masses supported it at the time. We think you can lead them to a better future, where this hell can have a chance to heal and fade."
She looked back up at the artificial sky above us. "You don't even have to talk to us again if you choose this. If you do your best to ensure your species can coexist with mine, that would be more than we could ever hope to see happen."
"You think that's possible? That I could get that far? It seems so far away."
Hope bared her teeth in a smile. "You're more than capable. You love your people with everything you have, Blu. They'll see that. They'll believe in you. When you stand firm for your people, they'll follow you, too. We'll help where we can- peacefully. This can happen, I know it."
I found myself looking up at Earth's sky once again, apprehensive above this new burden. There was no way I would turn this down. If the Wolverines thought it was possible, then it was possible. A future where my people were both free in body and spirit was one I would fight for until my weary body gave out.
"How do we start?"

Man charged with rape, robbery of men he met on Tinder in Prince George's County
BRANDYWINE, Md. - A man faces several charges for using a dating app to set up meetings with victims who he allegedly raped or robbed in Prince George's County.
Prince George's County Police said Rodney Richardson, 26, of Brandywine faces several charges related to the two incidents including rape, kidnapping, handgun offenses, and armed robbery.
According to investigators, Richardson is accused of using a fake name on Tinder to set up meetings with his victims.
Rodney Richardson, 26, of Brandywine. (PHOTO: Prince George's County Police Department) In one instance, that happened on February 2 in Brandywine, investigators said Richardson set up a meeting, and after meeting the adult male victim, Richardson carjacked him at gunpoint.
Police claim that during the encounter, Richardson also stole the victim's phone and wallet.
Police said then on February 10, Richardson met another adult male victim through a dating app. The incident was reported to officers on Sunday.
The victim met with Richardson at a church before getting into his car and going to his house.
Once at the house, the Richardson allegedly tied the victim's hand, told him to lay down in the trunk and began raping him at gunpoint.
Police said Richardson watched the victim throughout the night, before forcing the victim on the next day, to drive to a bank and take out more than $4,000 for Richardson.

2023.06.06 16:16 R615Overrated NORMAN HISTORIC ENVIROMENT: YORKSHIRE AND THE NORTH CASE STUDY
SUBTOPIC 1
What evidence can you find that people in the north did not accept Norman authority?
Spring 1068- There was a rebellion involving Edgar the aetheling, The Mercians and Gospatrick
The various rebellions from 1067-75
What methods does William use to try and control the north?
Built castles
Massacred Saxons
Why did William appoint Gospatrick (an Anglo-Saxon) as the earl of Northumbria?
He hoped for English support
Which foreign powers threatened Norman control in the north? When and how
Scotland-1070
Denmark-1069
How many times did William have to put down rebellions in the north?
6-8
SUBTOPIC 2
Why was Malcolm III of Scotland a threat to William?
He was married to edgar’s sister
Providing him with close relations to the throne
He extended his influence southwards towards Lothian
He sheltered rebels fleeing England
Why was the northern aristocracy a particular problem for William?
They weren’t reliable
Many of the loyal Northumbrian earls were intermarried with the scots
Explain stage 1 of the rebellion of the north
• Williams opponents gathered in York in the summer of 1068
• They launched a rebellion led by Gospatrick, the earl of Northumbria
• The king marched through edwins land and built warwick castle
• Edwin and morcar surrendered
• William retook York and built York and Nottingham castles before returning south
• He began constructing Lincoln and various other castles
• Placing his supporters in charge of these newly built fortifications
Explain stage 2 of the rebellion of the north
• Gospatrick and Edgar joined forces in January 1069
• They took advantage of Williams absence and marched a rebel army south
• They headed further south and besieged Williams new castle at York after massacring Williams troops in durham and killing Robert of commines, the new earl of Northumbria
• William quickly returned to England and travelled north to relive York for a second time
• Where he left FitzOsbern in charge
Explain stage 3 of the rebellion of the north
• King swein was planning to invade England
• Autumn 1069- A Danish fleet of 240 sheips led by sweins brother and his three sons crossed the north sea
• They began working their way up the east coast of England
• Northumbrian nobles around York started an uprising with the help of Scottish soldiers sent by maclolm
• Northern rebels and the Danish fleet massacred the norman garrison in a battle
• They started devastating gires which burnt fot two days and destroyed large parts of the town
• The danes retreated to plunder Lincolnshire
SUBTOPIC 3
Did the harrying of the north end opposition and secure norman rule in the north?
• Rebellions still occurred
• William might’ve had Yorkshire under control and fought off the scandanavian invaders
• However, Northumbria and Cumbria remained vulnerable to attacks from Scotland
• Malcolm raided Cumberland in 1070 and conducted further raids in 1075
• Another rebellion led by the earl of Northumbria occurred in 1095
How bad was the harrying of the north?
• The levels of destruction that occurred will never be known
• A majority of Yorkshire areas were described as being ‘wastes’ in the doomsday book
• William of jumieges was killed in 1086
• York’s wealth decreased by over 25% due to the harrying of the north whilst southern counties and cities prospered economically
• However contemporary accounts may have exaggerated the massacres that took place
• Some modern historians claim that there was a misunderstanding of the terms used in the doomsday book
• The lain for ‘waste(vasta) was used to indicated a failure to find out the value of an estate
• Rather than the area being physically destroyed by the normans
What had the normans done to establish their authority in Yorkshire by 1086
• The Normans conquered the people of York politically, culturally and militaristically but also conquered much of their land
• Over the years the noble Saxon families had their land confiscated with many ending up as being tenants
• 90 percent of land was confiscated and dominated by the Norman opposition
• Many castles were built
• Many estates were transferred after the harrying of the north
• Lordships were built at important administrative, population and military centres in the country
• The Normans have fully dominated Yorkshire at this point
Who was placed in charge of York in 1069 and what was their job?
• William of percy and Hugh Fitz baldrick were put in charge
• Their job was to restore norman authority in yorkshire and the land surrounding the city
What happened to the value land in Yorkshire following the arrival of the normans
Dramatic decline in value
Why does the value of land in Yorkshire decrease following the arrival of the normans
Due to major destruction by the normans
Was the norman conquest of Yorkshire complete by 1086?
It was far from complete
Its progress lagged behind that achieved in other countries
The Normans knew very little about the land beyond the names in the doomsday 7
SUBTOPIC 4
What was the problem with the term ‘waste’?
The term ‘waste’ referred to really invaluable property and land rather than land that was destroyed and plundered. The harrying of the north was arguably over exaggerated in the doomsday book to demonise William
“Such a small number of men could not have done so much damage In such a short amount of time”- Why is this statement wrong
• Williams army was professional and well funded
• The northern anglo Saxons were untrained, poor farmers and civilians
• William’s army had a great advantage
“The pattern of waste does not look like a military campaign- such as the destruction of villages along major routes- Why this statement is wrong”
William was renowned for splitting his army into smaller division and distributing troops across various different regions
“The term “waste” was not used to describe physical destruction but to describe estates that no longer exist or had been over by a more thriving neighbour”
• William’s invasion of York has lead to nearly 100,000 deaths
• His brutality And capability to destroy should not be underestimated
Compare Cheshire and Yorkshire in terms of destruction and recovery time
Yorkshire was hit harder than Cheshire and so had a far longer recovery time
Medieval York features
• Main castle at the centre
• River that connects the land
• Motte and bailey castle
• Cathedral/ministry
• York ministegiant cathedral
• Limited bridged which meant limited entry creating pinpoints/chokepoints which meant control
• Market place at the centre allowed for control as it prevented crime
• Ultimately all these features allowed for control
Importance of York
• Capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria
• Vitally important for anyone who wanted to control Northumbria
• The centre of the vale of York
• The vale of York was the main transport corridor between the south of England and Scotland.
• A strategic and accessible location
• Fertile and low lying agricultural land contributed to its strategic importance and continued prosperity
The vale was bound by family trade, property ownership and culture

Memory transcription subject: Jaxton, son of a humble sheep farmer Date [standardized human time]: October 11th, 2136 If someone asked me years ago how many people would travel the globe just to see me. My answer would have been three; my father, my mother, and Dex Mason. My mother and father would have been simply obligated to do so, as I was their son, and I would have done the same thing. Dex was my best friend when I went to middle school in America, and he stayed my best friend when I went back to Wales, going back to Atlanta for many vacations.
What can I say? He had a nice collection of guns, and his general cheerful attitude made many people optimistic, so a day on the range with him led to the both of us being happier.
Then you add in Dex’s older and younger brothers, our mutual friend John Dillinger, and then you have a recipe for a fun time; guns, video games, hiking, and the occasional sheep herding if they ever come to my home: It’s a blast!
An alien porcupine though… I honestly never expected that I would ever in my honest-to-God lifetime, have such an impact on someone before. We barely knew each other for even a few minutes, yet she to my knowledge was merely some sad Gojid that was struggling with depression and loss. All I did was walk in and comfort her, or well, that’s how I saw it.
I still feel like an absolute idiot for forgetting about what I told her. It wasn’t a promise, but based on the implication of how I said it. It may as well have been a declaration to see the girl a few hours later, or however long it took her to get ready.
Now, speaking of Barlim, it’s been a few minutes since she arrived at my doorway at the most unexpected of times. I had her sitting in our living room on our couch. The Gojid, or
Gojya, that I had to have explained to me, had her arms wrapped around one of our decorative pillows. She was giving squeezes every few seconds depending on how she felt, and if she was really giving it a firm squeeze, I’d reach over and stroke the top of her head. Barlim seemed to relax every time I did this.
“You holding up better?” Barlim appeared to be holding up better: No longer sobbing out tears from her eyes, or having mucus running from her nostrils.
She merely sniffed weakly for a second, nuzzling into my hand. If I had to admit, I had no idea if I was performing some massive social taboo by patting her like an animal, but if she wasn’t going to complain, neither was I. I mean, I already poked myself twice more! “I’m feeling much better. Sorry for intruding…”
“Don’t be,” I said while holding back a small laugh. “Are you feeling better enough to talk now?” Barlim’s ears flicked in response, and then she nodded in response upon realizing I didn’t know what those ear flicks meant. “Good.”
“Hey, I would just like to apologize for how I acted,” my mother started before I had the chance to speak. “It’s just that I’ve seen on the news and read of murderous xenophobic aliens…-”
“It’s fine,” Barlim let out the most adorable-sounding chittering noise I have ever heard. It sounded as if a porcupine was, well, laughing! “I would not have reacted much differently… Three days ago?” At least she could make fun of herself for how she acted. Her ears gave a few flicks, gesturing towards amusement or self-depreciation if I had to guess. They burned bright blue.
My father took a minute to stand up and walk over to Barlim. She only fidgeted a little bit, but not much when he reached out to her with one hand. “Jameson, again, it’s been pleasant to meet you so far.” The man’s hand hung in the air for several seconds. Barlim eyeing it up with what had to be a quizzical expression. “You’re supposed to grab it and firmly shake it,” my father eventually grunted.
“Oh!” That seemed to snap Barlim out of her stupor. She reached forward in kind with one paw, clasping her surprisingly big paw around my father’s hand, which he shook. The Gojid seemed to have a fair understanding of the action after a few seconds, at which point the handshake ended and my father returned to his seat.
A brief, quiet pause occupied the four of us before there was more knocking at the front door. “Oh, uh, that may be the rest of my friends. I sort of forgot about them when I realized we were so close.” The tips of Barlim’s ears turned a delicate shade of blue. She started to get up, but with a firm palm on the top of her head, I held her down, gently.
“You traveled a long way. Let me get the door,” I state and get up from the couch. My knees and back stretch, giving a satisfactory series of pops before I work my way to the front door. I decide against grabbing the mask, assuming that Barlim’s friends have gotten quite used to the infamous human binocular stare. When I open it, I see a rather eclectic group of individuals, some familiar and some not.
“Arwen, Trivi, Tova, and I take it Barlim’s friends.” Arwen and Trivi issue some friendly waves. Tova has her forearms clasped around Arwen’s neck from behind, jaw resting on the redhead’s shoulders. Her eyes are puffy and orange. It was pretty easy to assume what she had been going through. Meanwhile, the other three flick their ears and tails in a way that was most likely a greeting, but that was just me making an inference based on this being our first interaction, and them not giving waves in greeting.
I really need to learn Gojid and Venlil body language. “Just delivering the rest of that one Gojid’s friends.” Arwen’s tone was the general cheerful tone it always was. She briefly stepped back from the door and swung an arm to the side, pointing to the three aliens behind her, doing so while under the weight of Tova.
“Barlim,” one of the Gojid said to Arwen. “My name is Pragh,” she then pointed over to another Gojid, “That’s Tack, and,” she indicated to the final Gojid, “That is Telg.” Again, the other two Gojid gave very similar flicks of the ears when they glanced at me with one of their eyes. “I take it you’re Jaxton?”
I couldn’t resist the urge to curl my lips upwards in a smile. The three Gojid didn’t flinch when I exposed my teeth, for which I was grateful. I really didn’t feel like bowing to more people than I needed to at the moment, having not gotten a particularly great amount of sleep last night was not a wise idea. “You’d be correct. It seems I’m the popular man of the hour. What can I do for you all?”
“Well, Tack and I were simply following Barlim, so we were going to stay with her until the UN or whoever really controls the whole Gojid refugee camp situation comes looking for us-”
I cut off Pragh with an amused tone. “So let me get this straight. You wanna come and mooch off my family for a bit because you have nowhere to stay at the moment?” I hold my tongue for just the slightest second, letting Gojid raise up her paws defensively. Even Arwen’s eyes widen briefly at what I just said.
“That’s not-” Pragh doesn’t speak for long before I dismissively wave my hand.
“I’m joking, yes, I’m sure my parents will allow you to stay for a bit, but you’ll have to clean up after yourselves, and all that stuff.” I lean up against the doorframe. “Ok though, jokes aside, what do you all want?”
Pragh rubbed her paws over her blue ears. “Yes, well, you did sort of hit one of them. I will admit, there was very little planning other than
we’re going to Wales on our part. You don’t have to worry about Telg though.”
“I scored myself a date! Hah!~ So, I will be going back to Georgia in about an hour or two.” The Gojid paused, popped open one of the pockets on his hoodie, and took a peek inside at a slip of paper he pulled out. “Two hours, yeah, I have about an hour to spend here. So you and Tack are going to stay here?”
Pragh nodded to Telg’s words. “Yep, someone has to make sure Barlim continues to be a responsible Gojid. Also, I still have more research to do over the internet-”
“Ah yes,
research, Pragh,
research, am I right?~”
“No! Not that! I’m not going to be looking up
that!”
The two male Gojid couldn’t help but hold back giggles and chitters, making me feel as if I was missing some sort of-
Oh. The second it clicked for me, I just let out a long, slow sigh. “Please, let me just say that humanity is probably not whatever you found. Factory farms are a thing of the past.” Apparently, I was wrong, for the other two Gojid started laughing more uproariously, “Ok, I’m wrong it seems…” The gears proceeds to click a second time after realizing it was something a lot more
bawdy than damning. I opened my mouth to say something but quickly realized that I wouldn’t have anything to follow up on if one of them decided to make any sort of accusation, so I quickly shut my plan to speak about that down. “How about you all just come inside now? Your friend Barlim already came by, and I’m pretty sure you all would like a break from your adventure.”
“Actually, Trvi and I were going to take Tova to my home. Might take her to the hospital if Quilix has calmed down. God, I wished they transported him to Ysbyty Gwynedd, but no. He had a freakout and had to be moved to London.”
“It’s all my fault…” The dark venlil whined.
Arwen’s hand managed to work its way between Tova’s ears, giving a few scritches. Scritches that Tova nuzzled into. “Come on you big,
big venlil. I know you’re upset. Just, hang in there for a little while longer. I’m sure Quilix will come around. Let’s take you home, see ya Jaxton!” Arwen waved and carried the venlil toward the parked taxi in front of my house. Well, carried was a generous term for half-carry/half-assisted in guiding toward the car.
Trivi followed seconds later, giving his own bye and wave. “Tell your mother and father I said hi, see you tomorrow!” And with that, the blonde venlil scampered off, following after his human lover.
This left me with the three other hedgehog-looking aliens standing awkwardly in front of my door. They looked amongst themselves, thinking about saying something.
Wait, someone’s missing… “Arf! Arf!”
The three Gojid who looked like they were about to say something all jumped about a foot in the air when Lacey came bounding through them, running straight past me into my home. “Oh, Lacey! Welcome ho- Oh, and ignored.” I shake my head upon hearing the following
oof that comes from my father. Lacey must’ve claimed my father’s lap as her seat. “Well, if you want to come inside and meet the rest of my family. Come right on in.”
The next few minutes are filled with more pleasantries being exchanged. The Gojid all take their place on the couch, somehow managing to fit four of them on a couch meant for three. I end up choosing to stand by my father, who gently strokes Lacey across her back. The border collie panting jovially, looking back and forth between us and our alien guest, giving the occasional bark to beg for more attention.
The Gojid guests seem calm for the most part, sitting on that couch, but it is quite clear that the dog makes them uncomfortable since they flinch every time Lacey either makes a noise or stares at them with those heterochromatic eyes. “Not a fan of dogs, are you?” My father breaks the silence once it starts up again.
“I didn’t like…” Pragh started but stopped seconds later. “Listen, I believe you know why most Federation species don’t like humans, right?” Pragh’s words earned an affirmative grunt from my father. My mother and I nodded too. “Well, you’re all sapient and in control of your hunting instincts…” I raised my eyebrow at that but chose to say nothing. “That dog though-”
My father raised a hand, telling Praph to stop speaking for a moment. “I am going to have to stop you right there. Firstly, humans don’t, or we believe don’t have hunting instincts, and secondly, Lacey is a good girl that has harmed no person before, human or alien. I can assure you, as well as Quilix, Trivi, and Tova, that Lacey wouldn’t harm any of you, your pups, or anything else you will be worried about.”
Those few calmly spoken, but sternly voiced words are enough to calm the four Gojid down a fair amount. While I can’t see their muscles under their fur all that well, I can safely assume that their muscles grew lax at such information. Maybe we can do more to ease them around the dog while they’re here?
With an idea springing to mind, I take a few steps over to our old wooden hall tree. It is adorned with a few coats and hats, but what I am interested in is blue colored, six feet long rope of dog leash. The second it makes the lightest noise, Lacey is bolting toward me. “Eistedd!” The dog swiftly responds to the command: Hind quarters hitting the ground the second the word leaves my lips. I reach down and stroke the top of the dog’s head with one hand, getting a jovial arf out of her. “Merch dda, merch dda.~” I give the dog’s head a little bit more tender love with my palm and fingers before attaching the leash.
“Cefn.” I keep my voice low, coaxing Lacey into walking toward the couch.
The four Gojid, three of which have probably spent some time outside with the dog, all had a similar reaction when the dog came over: Paws came up off the ground, retracting safely onto the cushions above. It wasn’t really out of the border collie’s reach, but it was clearly instinctual-driven or propaganda-driven fear. “No need to be afraid, she won’t bite you - eistedd.” True to my words, Lacey gets close, sniffing along the edge of the sofa, but not jumping up onto the furniture.
“I see you’ve been practicing, Jaxton. You showing off for the guest?” My dad jokes.
“Hey, I don’t really get a good chance to speak Welsh. Dam- Darn it, really should’ve paid more attention in school. Might go get some lessons so I’m not part of the ten percent that can’t speak it. All I can do is shepherd a dog around, ask for the bathroom, a beer, where am I, and a few other things.” It’s hard not to let out a disappointed sigh. “I need to get off my backside and stop being so lazy.” I pause for one small moment. “And that probably translated for all of them to their native tongue. Doesn’t matter if I say it in English, Welsh, or honestly, Mandarin.”
My old man grins and laughs, leaning his back into the old rocking chair he claimed. My attention returns back to the dog, the fearful porcupine, and three scared hedgehogs.
The first one to reach out if I recall his name is Tack. The Gojid’s claws lightly brush the top of Lacey’s head in a tepid fashion. The dog stares back up at the curious paw; not growling, barking, yipping, biting, or making any sort of fuss that could freak out the apprehensive Gojid. Slowly, Lacey’s tail beings to wag as the curious touching continues for a few seconds. “Is that normal?”
“Mhm… Yes, dogs’ tails wag when they are happy. If she was really happy, she’d jump on you and start licking your face.”
The four Gojid recoiled with what looked like disgust: The thought of a
predator’s maw all over their face,
tasting them as if they were her next meal was probably what was coursing through their minds. “I think… That’s something I wouldn’t like from a non-sapient creature.” Telg adds in.
He says he doesn’t want it from a non-sapient, but what about a sapient? Oh, what wonderful thoughts this one has. I internally joked.
Both my father and mother let out an audible cough at Telg’s… Well, it could’ve been an indecent statement, or maybe licking was a sign of greeting? There was no way for me to know with my lack of knowledge of Gojid customs.
God damn; Gojid customs, language, body language, and Welsh! That was leaving out Venlil ear and tail signals as well! Too much to learn. With a gentle nudge, I guide Lacey down the bottom of the couch, letting each Gojid get about a minute or two of
bonding time with the goodest of girls. It’s only been a few minutes, but the four could be easily seen relaxing: Tack and Telg are both confident enough to let their paws touch the floor again.
From fearful of anything that ate meat their entire life to sort of fearfully allowing a dog to sniff them, or them to touch a dog, must be leaps and bounds beyond possibility months ago. “So, you all more comfortable around dogs?”
I get a non-varied amount of reactions: All of them positive to a minor degree, but none are negative or super positive. “Good.”
With such a positive, or well, lacking in a negative reaction from our alien guests. I reach down and unhook the canine’s restraint. No one flinches and Lacey continues to sit for about another few seconds before lazily pacing around the front of the couch, sniffing at paws for some more time before retreating back beside my father’s feet.
“So… What’s the history between humans and dogs?” Pragh was the one that shot this question. One is no doubt born from the fact that we probably allowed a non-sapient predator into our home.
Well, if I was using their logic, of course: I wouldn’t be surprised if it came from ‘Wouldn’t predators eliminate the competition?’ if I had to guess. “The history involving our canine companions is long and complex.” I reach behind my head to adust my blonde ponytail, tightening up the black band to keep my hair from falling in front of my face. “Most domesticated dogs you’ll see; German shepherds, border collies, Australian shepherds, golden retrievers, and on and on the list goes. I believe there are hundreds of breeds, but that is another tangent we can go on another date. What you’re more interested in is the history, as you have asked.”
I took a few steps around toward the front of the couch, using this new position to project my voice onto my alien audience. My parents had already heard this story a few times when they spoke with one of our dog breeders.
“It all started
roughly speaking, thirty-thousand years ago.” I paused, totally for dramatic effect, but to also allow the Gojid to digest this fair-sized crumb of information. “Our competitor, an antagonizing species of persistent pack predators with a strong social bond, the wolf, would often invade human territories, and vice versa. You see, humans and wolves aren’t too dissimilar. We’re both highly social species, pursuit
pack predators as I have heard, emotionally intelligent, highly adaptive, strong parental connections, and good communication skills. I can go into specific details another time, but those are some of the big traits we share. I’d say that the large preference for having a social structure coupled with good communication skills on both sides were the two assets that helped the most. Emotional intelligence and actual intelligence would probably be third and fourth. Dogs and wolves can be pretty smart.”
I take a moment again, allowing my audience to follow along with what I am saying, waiting to see if any of them have a question. “So due to these similarities, humans and these
wolves cross species’ barriers?” The bipedal porcupine opined.
I nod to Barlim’s question. “Very close, but not quite.” I take a moment to swing a pointing finger down to Lacey. “I mean, as much as I love Lacey. I don’t see a dog diplomat coming through any time soon to argue for their sapience let alone an alliance.” I then straighten my posture back up, holding back a small laugh by letting a grin stretch across my lips. “It was more along the lines of wolves were desperate for food, and they’d feed off the scraps we humans left behind. This would go on for some time with the braver or more docile canines being allowed to slowly integrate with human society.”
“But they’re eating your scraps and food, but what do they do for you? Other than herd sheep? It just seems like your competition is swooping your food from under your nose, but… You’re not complaining at all.” Pragh was the one to ask that question.
Called it! “These proto-dogs had many purposes! Just look at Lacey and you can probably see what she has that is superior to a human. Tell me what traits you can see.”
I give the four Gojid some time to look over the dog. They eventually look like they all have something to say, so I slide down the line of them; Pragh, Telg, Tack, and then finally Barlim.
“A better sense of smell to hunt for prey you can’t see?” Pragh opined.“Better hearing for locating threats?” Telg questioned.
“Sharp teeth and claws for fighting off other humans.” Tack would state rather confidently.
“To form an emotional connection with and to not feel lonely?” Barlim tilted her head to the side, giving the dog another look.
I let them stew over their answers for about thirty seconds to discuss amongst themselves. Needless to say, I was kind of shocked, but also not by Barlim’s answer. Maybe my time spent with her gave me some subconscious understanding of her mentality? The other Gojid all looked at her, so I assume her different answer probably made something click amongst all of them.
“Well, to answer your questions; yes, yes, yes, and yes. You’re all correct. Some may say that the first three are probably the priority.” This statement earns a chitter from the four Gojid occupying the couch. “But I like to have hope for that last one: When you’re by yourself. The world is a scary place after all. It’s best not to be alone. I believe you all have
herds? Well, we humans have families, tribes, or nations, depending on how deep you wish to look into it, and
yes, dogs can be a part of a human family. Family cares not from where the blood comes.”
“Quick question and not to side-track the conversation too far, but I was told by my date that humans dislike being called predators. Is that true here too, or was that a dialect or cultural thing?” Telg was the one throwing this question.
“It is that way here too. When humans refer to other humans as predators, it is because that other human is a gross pervert that does horrific, deviant, and sexual things toward other people, animals, or in this case now that aliens exist, aliens, so I would refrain from calling humans predators unless you personally know the individual and they are ok with it. That being said, humans define predator as more of a relationship adjective when between animals. A deer is a predator to plants as a wolf is a predator to a deer. It is the relationship of consumption rather than dietary traits.” I finish off my statement with a nod.
“Well… If you don’t mind me referring you to as a predator for one statement…” Telg droned on.
I take a brief glance over toward my parents. My dad gives me a nonchalant shrug. My gaze returns back to Telg. “Go ahead and shoot your question or statement at me.”
The four Gojid look stunned for a moment, off-put by something I said-
Oh, don’t tell me ‘shoot’ was predatory… Probably was. “Just… throw out your question.”
“It was more of a statement, actually, but anyways.
Family cares not from where the blood comes, has to be one of the most herd-like statement I have heard from a predator.”
Did he really just say that? He really did, but I can’t fault him. From his point of view, he’s been spun so many times that up is down, and left is right. I shake my head, lowering it. A small chuckle slipping from between my lips. I could even hear my mother and father laughing behind me a few seconds later.
“Was what I said really that funny?”
“No, just the logic behind it is kinda funny. Like I said, humans don’t normally refer to ourselves as predators, and this whole
alien thing is kind of new to me.” My words carried upon by a light tone earns some laughs as well from our Gojid guests.
I clap my hands together, signaling the end of our little tangent. “Now, if I may resume my, if I do say so myself,
informative explanation… The proto-dogs seamlessly integrated into our small tribes at the time; they could track threats and prey miles before we were even aware of them, they could hear the smallest sounds and alert us of their dangers. Moreover, their sharp teeth and claws served as deterrents against other threats such as large carnivores, food-stealing rodents, or hostile human forces. Additionally, their companionship provided solace to lonely humans. As you can see,” I pointed back to Lacey, who was having her back rubbed by my father’s sock-covered foot, “Lacey seems to be enjoying herself quite nicely, but so is my father. In short, interacting with dogs triggers the release of feel-good chemicals in both human and canine brains. Activities such as petting, snuggling, and playing contribute to this positive bond."
Again, I pause, giving everyone some time to follow along. “Thus, they’d impact our evolution and vice versa: Humans that had dogs in their tribes were more successful than tribes without dogs. Humans that bonded more effectively with their canine companions would get even farther. As millennia went by, humans would get better at reading dog expressions, and dogs would get better at reading human expressions.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. I typed into it for a bit until an old photo of a wolf showed up. I turned my phone’s screen toward the four Gojid. “Here you can see a wolf. They aren’t extinct due to some wildlife restoration efforts, but we had a few close calls. Wolves are extinct in the UK and Ireland as of now, but not in North America, Europe, or Asia. What you see before you are what thirty-thousand years of evolution has done to us.”
Based on the look that the Gojid were giving me. I would guess it was along the lines of
wow.
“Now, before you start asking more questions. I should let you know that humanity has not only domesticated one carnivorous species, but a few others as well; some birds of prey like falcons, felines, and mustelidae such as ferrets. Meanwhile, on the herbivorous side, we have horses, elephants, rabbits, and so on. Yeah, it’s quite a long list. Means more animals for us to pet and touch. Humans can bond with just about anything, even non-living things, but that’s a story for another time.”.
I perform a small stretch, feeling my back pop. A small break in the monotony of speaking for so long.
“Now, to go back to the human-dog bond. I should remind myself to tell you the story of Gelert. It’s quite a sad story, but bear with me for just a moment.”
I clear my throat, getting ready to speak out an old Welsh folklore myth.
“A long time ago, a prince of North Wales by the name of Llywelyn went out hunting without his trusty dog, Gelert. He’d return home later that day to see Gelert, covered in blood, jovially returning to him. This freaked out the prince, who rushed to his son’s crib, finding it knocked over and messy with blood. He feared that the dog had killed his son and immediately plunged his sword into the dog’s side.” The four Gojid wince at the description, having just been told of the forged bond I have described moments ago. “The dog’s pained cry heralds the cry of the prince’s infant son, who lay on the other side, protected from a slain wolf. Gelert had valiant fought to protect Llywelyn’s son from the wolf, and in so was rewarded with a blade through its heart! A tragic tale to discourage impulsive thoughts and rash rushes to judgment. It was said that the prince buried Gelert and never smiled again.”
I never considered myself a great storyteller, but somehow I managed to get the four Gojid all teary-eyed. Barlim was rubbing at her eyes once again, and so was Tack too.
“H-how could he have done that to the dog..?” Barlim’s meek voice trailed off.
“Well, as said, Llywelyn thought Gelert killed his son. It was a rash decision. This moral folklore is supposed to warn against such tragedies, speaking of which, isn’t there an extermination fleet heading this way?”
While I may have been speaking for so long, having taken all our attention away from the potential destruction of Earth, or the general mopey attitude that came from meeting Tova. It probably was wise to bring up the fact that armageddon was on its way to Earth.
The four Gojid just sort of looked down sheepishly at the ground or flicked their ears in a way that probably meant the same thing. I didn’t really mean to put them on the spot like that, considering it was some of their former
allies committing this attack, but I guess that’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.
“I think I can speak for all of us here that we don’t-” Telg was interrupted by my father.
“We don’t blame you, or at least I can attest to myself, my son, and my wife over here. One day, assuming we survive this looming catastrophe. There will be regret, followed by hope, and then love and compassion once again. Though, I don’t think that’s what my son was hinting toward, more over the fact that your allies are about to make a rash decision they don’t understand. Probably one you would have made years ago, but that doesn’t really matter here, or there. We live in the now, and I think it’s time we started stocking up on some goods for our cellar. Well, we got goods actually, and a couple of guns too, but nothing fancy like the Americans and all their machine guns. A .30-30 lever action, an old .44 revolver, a twelve gauge shotgun, and a .22 hunting rifle. Nothing fancy,” he shrugs and grunts. “I’m more worried about my sheep. The best we can do is pray they don’t shoot the barn.”
There’s a brief silence as the seven of us come down from the long monologue that was dispersed between moments of questionnaires. I rub one of my eyes, stretching my jaw open wide in a hand-covered yawn.
How long have by been talking? “Sprak! I gotta go or I am going to miss my flight!” Telg clamors, quickly hopping off the couch. He quickly taps at his phone with his claws, making his way toward the front door. “See you guys later, and thanks for letting us stay! Yes, I know how to call a taxi!” He opens the door and bolts outside. At least had the manners to close it back without slamming it.
This left us with three Gojid!
“Well,” my mother stood up from her chair. “I’m certain you’re all hungry after such a long adventure, and Telg is probably too, but he’s gone already. Let me see if I can make you all something to eat…” She hesitates for a second before continuing. “Nothing with meat or animal products in it. Just vegetables and fruit,” she iterates before walking off to the kitchen, leaving my father and I with the three Gojid.
You know, that leaves one important question that’s been on my mind. One that I had asked Barlim, but have been quickly distracted by her onslaught of sudden tears due to my forgetful nature. “A quick question if I may have your attention.”
The three Gojid turned their attention toward me, looking at me as they awaited my question
“How the hell did you all get here?”

Not Shown - the costumed characters and rituals that make those places so amazing. I know what you're thinking. That this is going to be some rant about the Catholic Church. But actually, nobody is sure how much money THOSE guys are hoarding. If you count real estate and gold horse drawn carriages and looted art in their vault, it's probably much more than $50 billion. But the $50 billion in my subject line is Harvard. Not including real estate, pension funds, etc. Not including the 30,000 students who may (or may not) be paying $60,000 a year (before books, fees room and board) to attend. Yikes – that's $1.8 billion a year in revenue !!! And zero taxes. In fact, Harvard's $50 billion (with a B) endowment is so high, it throws off enough cash each year that it COULD theoretically pay the entire tuition of every student and give them their education free. Without eating into their endowment principle. If Harvard wanted to do that. But they don't. They don't want to pay taxes either. Harvard – like most universities - is a sort of magic kingdom. Where you can turn your back on the real world and pretend it doesn't exist. As long as you have the tuition. Or a scholarship. Or a student loan. A four-year visit (or possibly 6 or 7 year, if graduate school is included) to the magic kingdom. And if you have a Harvard degree look how easy it is to score an elite government job! Harvard should pay taxes. Income tax, real estate tax, capital gains taxes - the whole nine yards. You and I pay taxes, and we haven't got a prayer of sending a kid to Harvard. Shouldn't government handouts be needs based, instead of showered down on the ultra-wealthy? Tuition at the average (non-Harvard) college is now $41,000 (unless it's your local community college). Who the heck can afford that? You're either praying for a scholarship, or a signing up for a student loan you can never realistically pay back. $160,000 for a bachelors degree in . . . . anything. Accounting. Nursing. Psychology. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance . .. no value judgements here on your chosen major. I'm just saying that most people will never earn enough salary to justify that ridiculous expense. Okay - NOW let's move on to the Catholic Church. Another magic kingdom where the characters wear amusing historic costumes and have lifelong job tenure, like professors do. Let's agree up front that ordinary priests are probably not getting rich. Well, some of them do. But not THAT many, I'm hoping. The internet is vague on how many private jets the Vatican owns or leases. This is why god invented shell companies and subsidiaries. But at least SOME churches have jets. Someone with a charitable mindset is using chartered jets to fly migrants from Florida and Texas to even less hospitable spots - like New York and California. THOSE states are hopping mad, and threatening to sue whoever sent the jets. Good luck. If those planes were owned or operated by churches, forget it. You can't sue churches for ANYTHING. Not even pedophilia. Well, okay . . . these days you can take a whack at that one. But almost forever, you couldn't. Try finding a law saying that churches can't fly poor people from one state to another. I dare you. I don't think the Mormon church is involved in this migrant jet scam. But they do have assets of $100 billion. That's the equivalent of two Harvards. And the same kind of ginormous, awe inspiring castles as Harvard, the Vatican, and Disney's Magic Kingdom. How much does a lifetime pass to the Mormon-land cost? Well . . . it's a LOT. Theoretically 10 percent of your gross income. Before making student loan payments, or food clothing and shelter. But I'm guessing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is something like Harvard . . . there are discounts available if you know how to get them. Disney. Don't give me that annoyed look. I'm not going to do an impression of Ron DeSantis here. I'd just like to point out that Disney (US divisions only) had revenue of $85+/- Billion last year. This was during the pandemic. And “profits” - after expenses and deductions and exemptions and amortization and deferrals - of around $5 billion. Disney paid less than $2 billion in taxes. Disney of course isn't “tax exempt”. But if I told you there was a way to pull in almost a hundred billion a year tithes – er, I mean ticket sales – and pay less than 2% in taxes, you'd want to know how to get in on that yourself, right? Disney is NOT tax exempt, let me repeat. It's Just sitting on millions of acres of real estate, with billions of dollars of copyrights, licensed characters, exclusive film libraries, cable TV networks, And day passes to Disney theme parks now cost $1,100 for a family of four. Is that part of the government's estimate that inflation is only 8 or 9 percent? I've always wanted to live in a giant fantasy castle, like Harvard, the Vatican, the Mormons , or Snow White. But the odds of that are less than zero. But why do some of the planet's richest organizations get to do their thing tax free, or almost so? I'm not racist like Harvard - I don't believe in setting caps on student enrollment by race. I don't genuflect to a flying spaghetti monster. I don't believe Prince Charming is about to show up at my door and awaken me from this fitful dream, either. So why are everyone else's taxes so high, while these guys are living large? The gods must have crazy friends in DC, no? submitted by baltimore-aureole to economy [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 10:14 IfIHadANickle4UsAll In the past year, I've unwillingly released nearly 30 animals into the wild.
TLDR; - Traveled 800 miles to visit dying elderly relatives that had rampant feral cat breeding problem in their home. They struggled getting resources due to cat and bed bug infestations. No rescues would take the feral cats as they are feral indoooutdoor cats. Social services are moving relatives into a facility now.
Over Memorial Day weekend, I experienced a situation involving nearly 20-30 cats - and now, I am a firm believer that releasing them into the wild is a better option and/or plan than nothing at all.
Let's journey back in time to 2020, when my elderly great Aunt Beatrice and Uncle Jack (names changed of course) welcomed a female cat into their home who showed up on their doorstep hungry and meowing away. They live in a somewhat rural area of a small city (20k people) in the midwest about 150 miles from Chicago metro. Unbeknownst to them, the cat was pregnant and, within a matter of days, gave birth to 4 kittens.
Uncle Jack is extremely allergic to cats and the dander from the fur causes him to develop severe rashes throughout his body. Aunt Beatrice did everything she could to find the kittens new homes, but ultimately could not part with two of them, keeping a total of 3 cats in the home. Then, the mother cat escaped beyond one of them when they opened the door to get the mail, only to return about 6 months later (2021) -- pregnant.
This time, the mother cat gave birth to a whole new litter of 4 kittens, making a total of 7 cats in the home. Aunt Beatrice again got to work trying to find a way to adopt out the kittens, but during the pandemic, shelters and resources were maxed out as people were returning their pandemic pets for the sake of living or work obligations. She was only able to adopt out 1 kitten, keeping 6 cats in the home. And this time, Aunt Beatrice managed to get the mother cat spayed at the local vet, but couldn't afford any other spay/neuter care for the other 5 cats.
Thinking that the rest of the cats would never leave their home -- one of the female kittens escaped into the wild, returning months later pregnant with her first litter of 4 kittens. Now, they had 10 cats in the home, and it was becoming more challenging caring for them. The original female cat was officially a grandmother. Uncle Jack began suffering from very serious allergies and feeling sick/ill more frequently. Again, all of the local rescues, humane societies, and even animal control turned them down when they called for help.
Within a matter of a month or so, the daughter of the grandmother cat escaped again, returning to give birth to another set of kittens. She did this another THREE times in 2022 alone. By the end of 2022, they had nearly 16 cats and/or kittens in their home. Christmas 2022, I came to visit them and stayed with them for a week. I called EVERYWHERE within the tri-county area and even out of state to get help for these cats, and everyone was unable to help.
Aunt Beatrice was covered in cat scratches and bites, complaining that they jump and run across her in the middle of the night. Uncle Jack had very serious rashes, and to make matters worse, developed liver failure and had now begun end-of-life care with hospice. Aunt Beatrice wanted to keep them all, Uncle Jack wanted to be rid of them. Family and friends alike advised to kill them ourselves or "wait it out". One family friend offered to feed the cats to their pet snake.
Out of time and out of options, I waited for a warm winter's day, a series of days where the weather was 50-60 degrees. My partner and I drove around for hours, searching for rural area with lots of barns or a small village of houses away from major roads. There, I released 3 cats into the wild. And into the woods they ran. It was all we could grab/find in the house, the rest were scattered and so hard to catch. I, too, was out of time. We returned home and scheduled our return visit for the spring.
In that six months, only two more sets of litters were born -- or so we thought. Aunt Beatrice donated them to the church clergyman who showed up to pray for her at the house. A few of the teenage Jehovah Witnesses took 3 of the kittens. Others ran away and/or escaped from the open door during mail time, never to be seen again. Anyone she could pawn them off onto was welcome to have as many as they could take.
In recent weeks, we came back to visit and help declutter their home. Things are worse than ever before. The smell was immediately sickening. Adult protective services made it clear that the cats had to go. Animal control refused to come pick them up, "We don't even come out for cats anymore," they said. Everyone is booked and full to the brim, resources maxed out. Local vets charge $500 to do a spay or neuter, or wait more than a month to get on the list for the humane society or the spay express at $150/cat. It's a lot of money that we don't have to spend on more than 20+ cats.
We found between 12-16 cats/kittens and two of them were no longer alive on the enclosed back porch, which was so heartbreaking to find. So, with the sun high in the sky and winter long gone, we began the venture of releasing the cats into the wild yet again. We released 7 cats in the first few days, all of which were never friendly or touched by a human. Cats are very intelligent and are rather illusive to catch and/or trap. One of the last ones caught kept hiding under the kitchen sink, but we released her.
The next morning, we found 4 more newborn kittens trapped under a drawer in the kitchen. We think they belonged to the cat that would return to that cabinet often... the one we had already released. We struggled so much with trying to feed the kittens, they just wouldn't take the kitten formula. In a 100 mile radius, we called every. single. rescue. Everyone was full.
We don't have the financial means to pay for vet costs, and they are hefty. My great aunt and uncle couldn't afford it either. We were preparing to watch these kittens pass away from starvation as our every effort failed, and we were completely lost. FINALLY, nearly TWO DAYS after we had already released the mother cat, we found a rescue about 120 miles away that could take all of the kittens - just the kittens. And so, we traveled across state-lines and delivered them into the hands of people who could help, thanking them immensely for their care.
Lastly, we tried again for help with the remaining 5 cats to no avail. No one had room or returned our calls. We released the last 4 cats into remote areas or very small rural towns, off main roads. We released the cats in sets of 2-4 each time so they wouldn't be alone or could hunt/survive together. At least they may have a shot at finding a forever home on a farm than they would being starved to death on a hot enclosed porch or worse.
Uncle Jack has been doing much better without the cats. He's been having much better days. We feel confident the worst of his illness and symptoms came from his high allergy to the cats. The cleanup continues, though. The oldest cat - the one who started this all 3 years ago - ran away during the process. Maybe she might return, maybe not. Who knows. At least she was spayed.
You know, even Chicago intentionally released feral cats onto their streets just for the sake of getting rid of rodent infestation. Cats are accustomed to wild. So, I'd like to think that they are taking care of any mouse problems in the small towns they now reside in. And hopefully, someone may have found themselves an outdoor pet or domesticated one of them.
Do I have any regrets? No, I don't think so. If ever anyone else finds themselves in a situation where they have cats they can't care for and no where to turn, I may advocate for releasing to the wild... albeit maybe spaying or neutering first, if possible.
If you ever found yourself in this situation, I completely understand why you released it into the wild instead of intentionally having it euthanized or turned into food for something else. No judgment whatsoever. It is what it is.
Nearly everyone online will tell you to wait it out for help. I'm here to say that in the worst of situations, sometimes, help never arrives. Sometimes, you have to save yourself... or the ones you love. And that's okay.
If you were me, what could you have done differently?
UPDATE -- So a few things to be clarified here:
- I do not live with these relatives. They live alone. The rest of the family moved away over the past 30 years (including me) as the town has very little work beyond medical careers. They have been abandoned by the family. Maybe the cat fermentation has been keeping them going, I don't know.
- Cats are all outdooferal cats that come in/out of the house with no restrictions, not touched by relatives. They literally only play with or pet the first cat. The others are all non-human friendly, and bite or attack people. The county animal control and the humane society refused several of them AT THE DOOR.
- NONE of the rescues would take ANYTHING but baby kittens because they are considered "feral". None of them. They are all feral/wild and not people-friendly. The two that got trapped on the back porch by the hospice nurse? They didn't even know they were on the back porch. Otherwise, they would have been outside, too.
- The closest vet clinic does actually cost $500. They charge office visit costs, costs for anesthesia, pain medications, use of tools, etc. Seriously, I saw the bill for the first cat and got quotes from them for bringing in 5 cats the first time. They wanted nearly $2,500. That's more than they make on SS in a month. I don't have that kind of money.
- I called at least 70 different phone numbers to find a place for those kittens. Most went to voicemails. A lot of rescues only work via email. I had dying/starving kittens that I could not figure out how to properly feed. I called everyone on Google Maps across more than 150 miles. Literally had to travel 120 miles to the place that finally did take them. And to make matters worse, this was during Memorial Day weekend. Everyone was closed.
- They were all released in areas that were about 40-50 miles away from their house, but there's always a possibility they will return as they probably know their way home as they have been indoooutdoor cats their entire lives. It won't matter though because they are being moved to a nursing facility this month, but still. I'm not sure what else I could have done.
Update 2: I never want to be in this situation again. I wish my great uncle and aunt were never in this situation, either. We spent hours on the phone trying to connect with anyone would help, but no help came. It was horrible timing with a holiday weekend. I'm still getting calls from rescues we called and left a voicemail with, so I changed some details to avoid being identified.
I chose human life over the lives of the cats, but even then, I couldn't bring myself to take their lives or feed them to snakes... I can't just kill something like that, but I guess there are many who can do so easily. I let nature decide their fate as nature had brought the first cat to their door years ago. If I had to choose between cats and human lives, I'd probably choose the safety and livelihood of my great uncle and aunt again and again. I wish their adult kids would have helped out because they actually have the financial means to do so, but don't. My great aunt's son lives only 45 minutes away from them and went no contact a while back. He could have helped, but he never wants to see them again and even asked if they were dead yet.
I did my best to make things right for the sake of my grandma's memory with the resources I had. I wish it had been different and they could have found loving homes and been rehabilitated by people, and maybe they will be someday. There are lots of farms in every area they were released. We even saw some cats wandering freely in a few areas. I feel hopeful that they may have a chance at a better life just as my great uncle and aunt now finally do, too.

2023.06.06 09:13 throwawayforariel Jasmine, starring Jasmine (and some dude)
Aladdin remake
1 . Too much Bollywood Jai-ho nonsense has been added. Especially at the end credits, where you can see nieces and nephews of producers doing their very best with their two seconds on the jai-floor to get discovered. It's weird. It's like people,
people please: this is a kid's film. Nobody is looking at you. And this story is set not in India, but some indistinct fictitious smudge of "India-Arabia-Persia" so stop trying to claim this as your disney representation story. Like who are you? Black Ariel? (i saw this one after i saw little mermaid)
I loved the dance scene they added within the film though, where we officially find out the dude who plays Aladdin is one sexy hot tamale, but for real. And I haven't been attracted to a person in like fourteen years. And even then, it was Prince Eric (the cartoon, not the new gay ninny). I forgot people in general have a capacity to be remotely magnetic or that I have the capacity to like even notice lol. Spectacular dancing.
This is my favorite scene, these three minutes are like freakishly well done. The dancing is one thing, but the girl who plays Jasmine has the most passionately hilarious reaction shots and moments. It's the only scene out of any remake ever that I felt really compelled to rewind and rewatch it a few times over to just focus appreciation on different characters or elements each time loll. yessSs. mhm.
I didn't love how jealous and flustered Jasmine became upon seeing him shine and live his best life and playfully shade her back after all the actual shading she sent his way up until then- fuck her for this. "Impress me! Don't impress me! Impress me! Don't impress me! You try too hard and that's the problem! You don't even try and that's the problem!" while she's dressed like a male peacock. It's like stop being a bitch you treat him like shit, he is humiliating himself for you! Then she's all "no0o you guyss I'm speEechLeS$S!" when by then we've already realized all she is saying is "Let me ONLY speak, understand, MEN?! ME ONLY ME SPEAK ONLY ME SING ONLY ME DANCE ONLY YOU BE SPEECHLESS don't you fucking dance well and be sexy! I want to be the prize, me! I want to be the protagonist!" manipulating the energy of the whole room by storming off like a cunt to cut his routine in half.
It's like, good bitch, Leave. The film is called
ALADDIN, you shouldn't even be here. This isn't an opportunity for female empowerment here in this dude's narrative you succubus, and even if it were, you're hardly the poster child for it, princess with servants who won the birth lottery of her era and literally evidently does have the freedom to choose her own partner loll and then still has shit to cry about as though anybody in the movie ever forces her or alludes to forcing her into any kind of a marriage...? get lost, go cry about it to your zoo of exotic wild animals.
- Jafar is the biggest issue with this film: he is a puny little pantywaist now apparently, not intimidating or intelligent, but like anxiety-ridden and prone to hissy fits with the quivering voice of a confused pervert. He never turns into a freaking cobra either, just to ensure he remains a lame flaccid wimp in our memories. Oh, but Iago does turn into a pterodactyl for no reason other than to create a sequence that ends in Abu getting to assist in some form in this film I guess?
He never turns characters into yarn balls and toys and shit; he never traps Jasmine in an hourglass; he never even fake enslaves Jasmine, because god forbid the apparent heroine of this film be oppressed for one freaking minute, EVEN WHEN she in the cartoon was the one manipulating him (like she does everyone else even when not in danger), but whatever man.
Jasmine's father is also a problem, but for a much simpler reason: he is suddenly dull, lifeless, and speaks in the low grumbling tone of the devil himself. To remold one of the holly jolliest bouncing old cuddly sweethearts of disney parentage into this thing is cruel.
- Aladdin is so perfectly cast, that alone is a reason to see this movie or give it anything over 3/5 stars. It's insane, if you saw this guy in any other random ass role you'd immediately think, this dude looks like fucking Aladdin. They took a photo of the cartoon and ran it through a 3D printer, and this guy came out. He has his face, his build, body language, voice tone. And, he's really engaging to watch, strong screen presence, talented performer. Too bad he's apparently not the protagonist of the film anymore, lol wtf.
- This Jasmine is lovely. She's really breathtakingly beautiful, talented, engaging. I love her way, way more than I ever liked cartoon Jasmine- I actually grew up hating her, my least cared for disney character. Too much pitying herself for being rich and yelling at everybody she controls about how she has no control and shit whilst crying to a TAMED PET TIGER about her woes being "caged" in between tugging on his frigging leash. This actress is great and this Jasmine is a huge upgrade while still bearing resemblance enough physically and energetically to the original, and so are her outfits, daNG! . . . jesus christ.
. . . but that doesn't mean we can just make the movie all about her now, stealing the guy's thunder and shit. She didn't need a fucking song about being oppressed, because as I said, this bitch isn't oppressed. Aladdin, the homeless titular character, is. So please shut up and go apologize to your tiger and stop having slaves in your house etc in the meantime while our hero finishes his relevant number, please. This is literally his story, not yours. One of our only male disney icons, and yes Jasmine, you are the accessory in this film, sorry but you are the Prince Charming or the Prince Phillip, and he is the Final Girl or whatever lol. Stop it, you're being an attention whore and making us look bad. Let men have their glory too. Learn the art of *the assist* and distinguish it from "being oppressed." what's wrong with you.
- Will Smith:
a. I like that they didn't really make him similar to Robin's genie, that was a smart and respectful move: the understated nature of so many originally spectacular musical and comedic moments is very underwhelming, but it's actually insanely honorable that they really did let that classic remain that classic, while doing just mildly homage-y stuff as they did. Because we all know Will Smith can be a loud hysterical riot especially at physical or character comedy, so to hold it back as he did was actually more impressive than if he tried to match or outdo Robin's true OG unbeatable genie. I really bow in respect to them for this. Imagine WHAT ALL it took for him to take ALL the booming energy WE ALL have for that role, and to just mute it down to flat ground like that, so responsible with this treasure in his hands, he didn't try to etch his name on it or own it or claim it, he was just holding and protecting it for the time being while disney put it in his hands there, before it was passed gently to someone else, you know. He didn't muck up the integrity of it, we all owe him for that.
b. I like him and I like his love interest in the film, they're sweet and funny; but mostly, I was annoyed. I don't like changes like this. Please stop that. This extra bullshit forced the plot to "free genie" by turning him into a human, which is quite literally the definition of being trapped though, only without his magic powers + freedom from human responsibility just so this new admittedly bossy maid can have a husband? c'mon man. The genie deserved to be free as the magical being he inherently was, that was a more fulfilling ending. What's more, she sees him become a genie and serve evil Jafar as essentially an amorphous cloud of a demigod thing, and that's not at all traumatic a scene for her to take in, and when the whole thing blows over, she has zero questions for him...? The desperation of marriage+babies just like blocks it all from her memory and/or general concern...? okay. Like you shoehorn Jasmine's female empowerment subplot on steroids here that not a single person asked for, but then... this.
- The set is horrible- all sets, horrible... but Aladdin's den area...?? I know that cost negative hundreds of dollars. They had folks PAY them to take that random garbage off their hands, and I mean... wooowww. My jaw dropped and it was hard to come back from that dissociation enough to re-engage in the film. It's like wavy fucking cardboard with bricks painted on by sleepy, grumpy school children. They have no right to be this cheap and careless, they charge us our first borns each per ticket to disneypolitan.
- The music was nowhere near as good as the original's, which is like... then why the fuck are you guys doing this. Yes, they have delightful singing voices, but the background music is no longer a composition, it's like, again, grumpy sleepy children hitting the xylophone and drums. They downgrade ON PURPOSE, and I guess maybe it's for noble reasons? like to preserve the classics, as with Robin's genie in my previous point somewhere up there...? But you know what, folks? You can actually best achieve that by NOT attempting a remake at all whatsoever. fuck you guys.
- The cartoon is hilarious whereas this movie is only occasionally giggle-worthy. But this movie is funnier than the other live-action remakes, so fine.
- Aladdin's wig. It's an eyesore.
- It was too long. Something that made the cartoons awesome was how short they were and yet how packed with story, humor, music, etc. Nobody has the time, energy, or incentive for this kind of mediocre odyssey. Make us laugh and let us go, that's it. Stop holding people hostage.

2023.06.06 03:30 Lost-Lingonberry-457 Diarrhea in kitten
So I adopted Dolly a little over a week ago, from my county's animal shelter. She’s 8-12 weeks old. She was spayed the day I adopted her, and started on a dewormer, that I had to give a dose for the day after I adopted her (never saw any worms). She's been on the same food, and I only give her 1-2 treats a day. She's been having diarrheal loose stools for a good 4-5 days now. She always seems to be hungry but I figured that's just how kittens are. give her one scoop twice a day and she always has access to her food and water. I have noticed she likes to try and sneak food if my kids drop something. She's been her normal crazy, playful self. Should I be concerned? Or see if it'll pass? I'm just not sure what's causing it.

I was busted by the light police. They had a point, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post. Dana Milbank purchased a home in,
soon to be not, rural Virginia. At night he kept the formerly vacant property lit to the degree that spurned one commentator to call it “spaceship lighting.”
Milbank recaps being visited by the “light police,” a group of concerned citizens who help educate neighbors and instill a sense of pride in the brilliance of their starry night skies.
At first, he was taken aback, but later, not only did he appreciate their efforts, but he also converted his blinding always on, white light flood lights to warm 2700 Kelvin motion sensing lights.
Per Ruskin Hartley, executive director of the International Dark Sky Association, “for 4.5 billion years there was no artificial light at night. It’s really only in the last five human generations that we transformed that. It’s one of the most profound transformations of our environment.”
Many of you may recall an earlier story, way back in our Hormone of Darkness episode, showcasing concerns by local residents prior to a 760 house (now 761) plus town center development moving into the Culpepper County, VA area. Per the
Rappahannock News, this development features “a resort style swimming pool, clubhouse, tot lot, and multiple sports fields and sports courts, all connected by a network of biking and walking trails.”
The forgotten medieval habit of ‘two sleeps’ by Zaria Gorvett of the BBC. Gorvett opened my eyes to something I never knew about, the medieval custom of two sleeps. For those of you unaware, two sleeps are exactly what it sounds like.
Folks would partake in a communal nap, complete with rigid sleeping arrangement conventions, between 9 – 11pm, then awaken for a few hours to do everything from hang out to brew beer! In fact, the idea of multiple sleeps crossed cultures and was found in places as far from Europe as indigenous South America.
How can one’s circadian rhythm make sense of all of this?!
Well, for starters, until the invention of the alarm clock, which humorously was invented by a clocks salesman so he could wake up and sell more clocks, people had no firm way to wake up at a consistent time. The industrial revolution enforced a new circadian standard.
And there’s some science behind this! In the 1992 study,
In Short Photoperiods, human sleep is biphasic, researcher Thomas Wehr found that after four weeks of 10 hour days, his subjects began to engage in this two sleep cycle, involving a one to three hour period for which they became awake and engaged in between.
Want to Learn About Light Pollution? There’s a mini-course for that!, Jennifer Sensiba of Clean Technica. Quoting Sensiba, “As I got older, I traveled a lot more and saw the problem more for what it is. Not only did I see that in many places there is no refuge from it, but I also saw that it was slowly growing worse. Places that had been dark 30 years ago had more and more light creeping upon the horizon.”
If you’re interested in learning more, or more importantly, know someone who might benefit from learning more, Sensiba links up to an International Dark Sky Mini-Course on light pollution, call it Light Pollution 101!
There’s a Play Date at the National Museum of Natural History: Lights Out exhibit! But unfortunately, by the time you listen to this, and hell, by the time we talk about this, it has passed.
Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan. Sarah Parlette for Click on Detroit. Evidently gambling websites have decided to honor April’s International Dark Sky week in a strange new content marketing campaign, which was to rank the best places in each state to see sunrises and sunsets. My favorite one, “Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan,” comes from Click on Detroit, whereby a quote “study” examined Michigan’s most populated cities.”
According to
Click on Detroit, “to celebrate International
Astrology Day on Saturday, staff at Great Lake Stakes, a Michigan online gambling news site, looked at light pollution in the five most populated cities around the Mitten state to determine which offers the best views every morning and evening.”
Star bathing is the new outdoor travel trend we should all be trying for Summer 2023, according to Amy Beecham at Stylist. Evidently, as an attempt to destress and promote mindfulness, romanticism about sleeping under the stars has birthed a 70% increase in searches for the term ‘star bathing’ on Hipcamp. And to be sure, “Hipcamp recommends checking a stargazing calendar which outlines major
astrological events – like supermoons, pink moons, and star showers.”
“Industry Must Face an Inconvenient Truth — Most LED Lights at Night are Unhealthy” Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, a circadian clock expert, recently published an article in LEDs Magazine chastising the lighting industry for not recognizing and reigning in the negative externalities of its products. Per the piece, such effects are, obesity, diabetes, depression, cancer, and more.
He cites three categories of industry responses, making the correlation that long term Denial or outright Ignorance of the Facts, may result in “asbestos-scale liabilities or draconian regulations.”
Per the piece, a recent survey by the Circadian Light Research Center of 2,697 peer reviewed scientific articles confirmed that human circadian clocks are highly sensitive to blue wavelengths, and that exposure to such wavelengths leads to major health disorders.
Moore-Ede calls for the industry to harvest the “commercial opportunity” to greatly limit future liability by creating and managing its own standards for circadian modulated lighting.
Unpacking the Wallpack, by Dan Weissman in LD+A Magazine. Weissman, who recently purchased a telescope for his family in Cambridge, MA, discovered that the scope could only afford him views of some solar system objects and a few brightly burning stars.
The ire of Weissman’s pen takes the shape of a rectangular fixtures, be it box like or simply a panel these days, that typically hang off the side of an exterior wall or above an exterior door. “Devoid of aesthetic value” this light is often put up under the “pretense of security and safety” by “recommended practices and adopted municipal codes.”
Weissman recognizes labels that often accompany, what he calls, “Glare bombs,” including “contractor-select,” “energy efficient,” or “light pollution friendly.”
Further, per an earlier LD+A article, such lighting driven by its extreme contrasts is exceedingly common in minority communities where light is weaponized as a tool of power. It becomes a “device of alienation, creating a zone of control and separation.”
Weissman recognizes that the true reason such fixtures are selected often comes down to cost. He recognizes that it may take equally as much cost to persuade building and homeowners away from such lighting into the realm of more responsible, lower lumen, shielded lighting.
Weissman calls for producers of these glare bombs to be labeled as polluters, putting them in line with fossil fuel manufacturers and PFAS makers.
Songbirds, dusk and clear skies: Scientists explore migratory flights, by Erin Blakemore. Bird migration season is ending here in the Mid-Atlantic. I was lucky enough to catch several Baltimore Orioles and Indigo Buntings last week. Researchers looked at 400 songbirds from 9 major species, “including the yellow-rump warbler, American redstart and Bicknell’s thrush.”
The question they hoped to answer was how are these birds so darn precise in identifying the best time to take off for their nightly migration? Scientists found that 90% of the migrating birds in the study took off within 69 minutes of dusk. A “much narrower takeoff window,” that even shocked the research team!
Per the study, taking off at night is all about maximum flight time. In addition to being able to precisely schedule their take offs,
a feat that every airline I’ve flown with over the past few years has proven inept at, birds also are apparently good meteorologists! They often depart when the atmospheric pressure rises over a day’s span. Other factors also trigger migration, including sex, age, and
celestial cues.
‘Lights Out’ initiative appears to be saving birds from crashing into Philly buildings by Sophia Schmidt. Preliminary results indicate that bird death counts are down 70% at one Market Street tower, since it began its participation in Lights Out. As we spoke about on a previous show, birds utilize the stars to navigate, but city lights can disorient the birds. Combine the lights with reflective or transparent glass, and that spells fatal trouble for our migrating warblers!
Per Keith Russell, a program manager for urban conservation with Audubon Mid-Atlantic, “We’ve lost almost a third of our birds – and [collisions] contributing to that. If we’re going to want to preserve the bird populations here in North America, we have to look at these types of problems. And this is a preventable one.”
The Knoxville, TN Zoo is offering up what they call “Twilight Tours” per WVLT 8. Each event will feature a guide to showcase nocturnal critters.
I did something similar in Singapore years ago. The zoo had very dim lights in the exhibits – and they kept those lights dim as you walked so that you didn’t lose your night vision. It was a very different and, might I say, peaceful experience than the typically chaotic daytime zoo.
Flashlights posing major threat to nesting sea turtles. Fox35 Orlando Apparently, a single flashlight can deter female sea turtles from coming onto a beach and nesting. Florida, as I did not know, is home to 90% of the sea turtle nests across the world, so losing sea turtles can affect the global ecosystem.
One visitor to Cocoa Beach stated, “Just leave them alone. Stand back and look. You don’t need a flashlight.”
Another, “It’s not super surprising because more buildings go up, more technology. As it increases, nature and stuff like that decreases,” said Zoe Jovaag, whose grandfather used to take her on walks to see sea turtles.
Capture the Dark 2023 officially is under way! The International Dark Sky Association opens up its annual photo contest complete with prizes across eight categories and an additional People’s Choice category. Voting begins on July 3rd, entries must be received by June 30th.
City Tests Traffic Light That Only Turns Green for Drivers Who Obey the Speed Limit. Erin Marquis for Jalopnik. And hey, you better not speed in Brossard, Quebec….otherwise you may be waiting around for a while. Brossard is testing out a new traffic light that will stay red until it senses oncoming traffic. However, it will only change to green if the car is going the speed limit.
Per the Jalopnik article, “FRED [the French acronym for “educational traffic calming light] forces fast drivers to stop and gives them a chance to reconsider their life choices.” Such lights are already used in Europe, but this will be the first for the Great White North.
Why the Greatest Threat to Star-Gazing Isn’t Light Pollution, and this comes to us from Dorin Elin Urrutia at Inverse. Elin Urrutia writes, in her compelling piece, that the greatest threat to star-gazing is actually the weather. Citing notable examples of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia (which burnt down due to bushfires) and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (which sustained structural damage following the winds of Hurricane Maria).
While the threat of human-caused climate change has presented new challenges, Elin Urrutia references proactive burns that saved Los Angeles’ Mount Wilson Observatory from flames in 2020.
On a similar note, ABC News (the Australian Broadcasting Company, not to be confused with the American Broadcasting Company), brings us “A World Without Darkness Could Be a Reality within a Few Years.” Per Carol Redford of Astrotourism Western Australia, “There are some people in the world now who don’t actually experience darkness anymore. They’re in a city like Beijing, Toyoko, or London. In all those big cities, it’s never dark, it’s always light. During the day of course with the sun, but then during the night with all of the artificial light. They’re not experiencing darkness, and definitely not seeing those beautiful stars…”
In the 66 years since the implementation of the UN Convention on the Peaceful Use of Outerspace, around 11,000 satellites orbit the Earth. But it’s about to get wayyy busier. Driven by innovations that have led to dramatic reductions in costs, over the next ten years, Per attorney Steven Freeland, it’s anticipated that somewhere between 100,000 to 500,000 objects will be sent up. Let me pause on that for a second.
On the travel front, we stay in the land down under, “Aussie region determined to keep its darkness is a stargazer’s dream” by Chantelle Francis of News.com.AU. The town of Swam Reach, population 270, resides in a 3200sq km region of Southern Australia that received its International Dark Sky Reserve status over three years ago. On a scale of darkness between 0 – 22, the River Murray Dark Sky Reserve at Swam Reach, measures in at a whopping 21.9!
Tourism has become a growing business. The reserve hosts numerous telescope pads and offers tours of the night sky. There’s hope that an observatory and/or planetarium may also arrive in due course.
Best smart lights for outdoors in 2023, Brittney Vincent of CBS Essentials. Oh there’s a lot not to love here, but it does fall in line with last month’s ‘Lumens are Coming’ article.
For those of you who feel the need to light your trees, because for some reason they need light at night I guess…I’ll try and pretend it’s not solely for ostentatious and narcissistic reasons.
By the way, does anyone remember when those were negative characteristics? The article features spotlights that can be programmed to over 16 MILLION colors including…lucky for us, ALL shades of white….which you can also do for a 500 lumen flood light set.
And hey, Ring now has solar path lighting. Don’t worry though, the fixtures themselves put out up to 80 lumens of sideways light.
You know, it’s astounding when you look at some of these pictures. The amount of redundant lighting. It honestly makes no sense to me. You have a porch light, which lights up the path. Path lighting, which lights up the path. And, in the one picture, god awful frontward facing flood lights, which also light up the path. How bright do you need these paths!? I digress. But the lumens are indeed coming.
LDS Church will get to light up its Heber Valley Temple after all, but the faith didn’t get everything it wanted, Blake Apgar of the Salt Lake Tribune. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fought hard to rid itself of any nighttime lighting responsibility by pressuring Wasatch County, Utah officials to approve new lighting rules that would enable the church to light a proposed new temple the same way it does for every other temple.
The Church received permission to uplight the temple, enabling an exception to be made in Wasatch’s rather stringent nighttime lighting rulebook. However, the temple will be restricted by the level of lumens it can use, and it must have exterior lighting turned off an hour after sunset or an hour after normal business hours.
Smart Street Lights Market is Expected to Hit USD 14,751.1 million at a 23.4% CAGR by 2030, Market Research Future Press Release The pandemic is officially over, smart street lighting is about to boom. Combine the rush to LED fixtures with the Internet of Things, and expect to see street lights moonlighting as traffic and parking monitors, air quality meters, and more. Not to mention, “it is anticipated that camera-connected smart street lighting will increase road safety by lowering the likelihood of accidents and criminality.”
Texas now has 7 dark sky communities for spectacular star gazing, Sana Ameer, MRT. Let’s cheer on the city of Bee Cave, everyone! Bee Cave joins a growing list of dark sky places already in the Lone Star State, including 2 Dark Sky Sanctuaries, 5 Dark Sky Parks, and 1 Dark Sky Reserve. Nighttime is alive and well in some parts of Texas!
Our Afraid of the Dark article is a bit scary! Hilton Head’s dark roads and pedestrians are deadly combo. What the town is doing about it, Blake Douglas at The Island Packet. Per the article, 9 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities occurred since 2018, with five occurring after dark. Prior to that period, there were 28 recorded deaths from 2000 – 2016, with 20 of them taking place after dark.
In 2018, an 11 year old resident was struck and killed while walking her dog across an intersection one night. Lighting advocates began taking shape in what otherwise is a very conservation focused island. Hilton Head, SC has a limited number of street lights, priding itself on “avoiding light pollution and blending nature with construction.”
Lighting advocates appear to be, at the very least, asking for flashing crosswalk lights on the island to indicate when an individual is crossing.
It should be noted that the article shows a chart of 9 after-dark-deaths since 2014, only two of them occurred at crosswalks. In fact, during the same time frame, 6 additional deaths occurred
at crosswalks during the
daytime.
As a whole, the National Safety Council reports that 74.5% of pedestrian deaths occurred at night, whereby
39.1% took place in lit areas and 35.38% took place in unlit areas.
Bryan Bloch, an auto safety expert, surmises that car companies bear some of the blame – producing cheap or ineffectual headlight fixtures, and drivers themselves, who don’t realize that they need to regularly clean their headlight lenses.
Despite opposition from residents, it appears that Hilton Head will be receiving lights at two new intersections and possibly more depending on engineering studies currently in progress.
Is lighting the key variable here? Is more light going to solve pedestrian deaths?
Our featured research article of the month comes to us from Animal Conservation, “Manipulating spectra of artificial light affects movement patterns of bats along ecological corridors.” Bats are already known to have a wide range of responses to artificial light at night (also known as ALAN). Fast flying species tend to be more opportunistic in the presence of ALAN while slower ones tend to be more light averse. We know that “long wavelengths and reduced intensity” can minimize their environmental effects on bats. It’s not unheard of for bats to travel upwards of “tens of km per night.” Furthermore, bats are very dependent on the landscape and the structures within those landscapes.
Despite the nuances between species, the consensus is that ALAN, especially high intensity ALAN, negatively affects bats. This study attempted to answer what exactly bats do when they encounter ALAN – how do they react depending on different types of ALAN.
The study used three different light fixtures – one green, one red, and one white. The control was devoid of light fixtures. The researchers attempted to ascertain the behavior of bats as they encountered lights adjacent to woody areas. The researchers looked at three different bat groupings based on their foraging-echo location behavior, that being one of open field foraging, forest edge foraging, and narrow space – or more aptly forest foragers.
Researchers found that open and edge foraging bats increased their activity close to white and green lights, and to a lesser extent red lights. However, narrow space bats were more likely to veer away from all colors of lighting. Edge foragers were also less likely to cross a white light.
The positive effects of white and green light on open and edge foraging bats appear to be attributed to the accumulation of insects around light sources containing more blue light.
The nighttime sky over Oahu will be lit up with green lasers in the coming days. Here’s why. Hawaii News Now Before we close up today, do you live in Hawaii? I know I wish I did!
If so, do you recall seeing
green lasers streak across the night sky? Well, the Army Corps of Engineers was using lidar at night to complete a coastal mapping survey.
Why did they survey at night? Specifically, why did they do this between midnight to 5am? Simply b/c the airspace is so busy, that time was the only chance they had to complete the survey. The remaining survey was completed during daytime hours.

2023.06.05 20:47 Totoro631 34 [M4F] #LongIsland NY - Super TALL guy looking for his nerd girl
About me: I’m a nerdy guy from NY. I'm a 6'9" and from Suffolk County on Long Island. I’m in to anime, sci-fi stuff, manga and all that jazz. I also like photography, cooking, baking, camping. A big coffee addict too. I do love Pokemon. It just feels like it’s always been a constant in my life. Though, I haven’t too much time to play the newest game. Even one of those nerds who had his own custom card made. I love to travel, but don't get to do it much. I have been to Japan twice though and love it there. I enjoy finding new spots in my area to check out like cafe's, game stores and thrift stores. I work for a PR and Management company. Film photography is one of my favorite hobbies. I like going to conventions as well. My personal favorite is MAGFest. I have been learning a little bit of Japanese also, even though I'm the worst at remembering to study it. So, what am I looking for? I feel I'm kind of pickier as I get older lol.
Definitely have to be in to Pokemon.
Some one who will nerd out with me. A girl who’s in to anime and gaming. A person who will want to go on random adventures. I would love a person who likes to go to conventions and have fun and maybe do a cosplay. I am a photographer, so free photo shoots for your cosplay too! Some one who will geek out with me over the dumbest things. Get hype when they get a shiny in Pokemon or even just lazy days marathoning the worst movies we can find or go down a YouTube hole. I guess I do prefer shorter more petite women. I don't know, I just like the height difference thing lol. Also smart girls are pretty hot lol. I would love to find some one local to Suffolk or Nassau. NYC is possible as well. I just want to find that nerdy person to share my life with and not be the forever alone 3rd wheel all the time.
