2023.06.07 18:32 GhostOfSorabji "Who Said?" — a fun game for all the family — and a challenge for this sub

As a divertissement from watching the many YT vids debunking FE from such fine contributors such as FTFE, MC Toon, PlanarWalk et al, I thought of a new fun game for all the family. It's called "Who Said?"
Essentially, you use ChatGPT to answer the prompt, "Write a debunking of the flat earth in the style of..." and add in a person of your choice, the idea being for your fellow game players to try and identify the person you chose.
For example, "Write a debunking of the flat earth is the style of William Shakespeare" leads to the following example:
--------------------------------------------------
Hark, fair audience, lend me your ears, For I shall now dispel your fears. The tale of a flat Earth, so wildly told, Shall be debunked, its falsehoods bold.
O, misguided souls, who question roundness, I beseech thee, embrace the truth's fullness. Let reason guide your intellect's might, And banish darkness with knowledge's light.
Imagine, if thou wilt, a vast expanse, A sphere suspended in cosmic dance. The Earth, a globe, round and true, A fact supported by evidence anew.
From ancient times, mariners set sail, Their journeys guided by a curved trail. The horizon, a gentle curve they'd see, Not a straight edge, as thou would decree.
When ships sail forth and disappear, 'Tis not due to some unseen frontier. Nay, 'tis the Earth's curvature profound, That makes them vanish, out of sight and sound.
Look to the heavens, O doubting minds, The celestial bodies, their movement finds, A path that's round, a cosmic design, A harmony, celestial and divine.
The moon, a faithful companion above, Shows its phases, a celestial love. If Earth were flat, how could we explain, The changing face it shows, waxing and wane?
The sun, our radiant source of light, Rises and sets, in a glorious flight. Its rays, spreading across the Earth's span, Illuminate different lands, woman and man.
And what of gravity, that unseen force, Which keeps us grounded, our feet on course? On a flat Earth, its workings are not sound, For objects would fall off, unbound.
But I shall not rest on science's plea, For there's more to debunk this fallacy. The journeys we take, from land to land, Would be much different, if Earth were bland.
In a round world, we fly, to traverse, From one side to another, in our diverse. If Earth were flat, this feat we'd not achieve, No flights afar, no lands to perceive.
So, let not thy mind be fooled by deceit, By the flat Earth's proponents, incomplete. For the evidence speaks with resounding tone, A spherical Earth, the truth to be known.
In conclusion, dear audience, be wise, The Earth, a globe, beneath vast skies. Embrace the knowledge, let thy doubts unfurl, And bid farewell to the notion of a flat world.
--------------------------------------------------
Another example and one I shall leave as an exercise for readers to identify. For the first person to correctly identify the person used to generate this response, I shall grant a Gold Award:
--------------------------------------------------
Scene: A cosy living room. A fireplace crackles softly in the background. Sir Reginald, a distinguished gentleman in his sixties, sits in an armchair reading a newspaper. Lady Prudence, his witty and astute wife, stands by the window, peering out at the night sky.
Sir Reginald: (raising an eyebrow) Prudence, my dear, what seems to be capturing your attention out there? Is it another one of those celestial phenomena?
Lady Prudence: (with a wry smile) Oh, Reginald, it's not a celestial wonder that has piqued my interest tonight. It's the absurd notion that our Earth, the very ground beneath our feet, is supposedly as flat as a pancake!
Sir Reginald: (chuckles) Surely you jest, my love! This flat earth fiasco has gained quite the following, I hear. But how can anyone, with even an ounce of sense, believe such a preposterous idea?
Lady Prudence: (leans against the window sill) Ah, Reginald, the human mind is an astonishingly peculiar thing. Some individuals, bless their misguided souls, have taken leave of their senses and embarked on a journey of misplaced skepticism. They contend that the Earth is not a magnificent globe but instead a flat plane. Can you fathom the audacity?
Sir Reginald: (smirking) I'm inclined to believe this is merely a jest, Prudence. A humorous prank designed to challenge our intellects.
Lady Prudence: (shaking her head) I wish it were so, my dear, but these flat earthers are as serious as can be. They propose that the curvature of the Earth is an elaborate deception, orchestrated by governments, scientists, and even the humble sailors who traverse the seas. Can you imagine the dedication required for such a conspiracy?
Sir Reginald: (laughing heartily) Dedication indeed! One must admire their tenacity, if nothing else. But surely, Prudence, there is irrefutable evidence to quash this notion once and for all?
Lady Prudence: (pensively) Ah, my dear Reginald, science has gifted us with an abundance of knowledge about our Earth's shape, from the simple observations of our ancient explorers to the complex calculations of our modern-day astronomers. The Earth is indisputably round, a magnificent sphere suspended in the cosmos. The curvature can be witnessed firsthand from the deck of a ship or through the simple act of watching the sun sink below the horizon.
Sir Reginald: (nodding) Quite right, Prudence! And what of the countless satellite images that depict our beautiful planet, adorned with swirls of clouds, vast oceans, and majestic landmasses? Are we to believe that these images are all part of a grand illusion?
Lady Prudence: (smiling) The audacity of such a notion is truly staggering, Reginald. Our esteemed scientists, who have spent their lives unraveling the mysteries of the universe, would surely have blown the whistle on such an elaborate charade. The notion of a flat Earth, my dear, is akin to believing that the moon is made of cheese or that cats possess nine lives.
Sir Reginald: (chuckles) Prudence, my love, you have an unparalleled way with words. Your logic and wit never fail to amaze me.
Lady Prudence: (curtsying playfully) And you, dear Reginald, always know how to make me blush. But let us not waste another moment pondering these misguided theories. There are celestial wonders to explore, discoveries to be made, and, of course, a delightful pot of tea waiting for us.
(They share a warm smile, and as they exit the room arm in arm, the crackling fireplace fills the space with a comforting glow, leaving the flat Earth notion far behind.)
Curtain falls.

2023.06.07 17:49 Dekerboi About higher dimensional Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball higher dimensional scaling is a weird subject to talk about. There're plenty of arguments for it, most focusing on Otherworld, I'll be discussing that and a few other argumentations explaining how higher dimensional DBZ doesn't hold up to scrutiny, at least to me.
We'll look at this post by u/ProfectusInfinity on Otherworld to start off. Now firstly, he confuses transcendent & transcendental, the latter is defined as anything that has to do with spiritual/non-physical worlds, it's nothing about higher dimensionality on its own, even mathematically speaking. Otherworld is the afterlife, it would be beyond everyday experience. Using transcendental that statement makes more logical sense. Their second point is discrediting Cipher, claiming he admitted Herms was bettemore reliable than him, but that's not what he's saying. Looking at the full context of the tweet, Cipher is saying Herms has translated nearly everything Daizenshuu related; if you needed something translated, Herms already has the translation for you. Not that he's the best at it, or better than Cipher, this is putting words in his mouth. Cipher doesn't like answering powerscaling questions, unlike Herms, who doesn't care for the most part. Using that tweet to say Herms is better than Cipher feels disingenuous. Herms' translation doesn't correlate to higher dimensionality anyway, as explained earlier, it's a moot point. Infinity shows a tweet of Cipher bringing up 'extra-dimensional' to refute people's claims on Otherworld. Now this brings up the question, why refute Cipher's newest version of the translation for an older version. Especially when both translations have the same message worded slightly differently, 'extra-dimensional' is defined as being outside the physical reality of the universe/outside Einsteinian's space-time.This makes sense as the Otherworld is outside from the Living World.
This pic is sent, but, like with Herms, it says transcendental, not transcend. Infinity proceeds to share multiple interpretations from other translators. After that he gives a TL;DR, concluding all interpretations of Otherworld are equally valid. First one, they say transcendental isn't synonymous with spiritual, but uh, no it is, especially in this context when we're referring to Otherworld, Dragon Ball's version of the afterlife. Remember words are derived by context. Naruto does refer to 'dimension' as a 'time & space axis', but spatial dimensions are scalar quantities and have no dimensional value. Most of these answers Infinity received are vague, first one doesn't give a straight answer, second one goes with 2, but the other options aren't excluded due to the vagueness of said statement, as it is not designed precisely, third one says 'transcend dimensions' correlates to all three, confusing transcendental & transcend, fourth one is reluctant to pick the third interpretation due to how DBZ works. Fifth one brings up transcendental being a good translation and it's better to ask someone who's familiar with Dragon Ball. Now infinity doesn't show this, but there's another comment under Doberman explaining whether it's referring to spiritually or higher dimensionality cannot be construed by the phrase (essentially Doberman's answer but more bluntly). You'd need to go by how Dragon Ball itself describes it. They go with 2, saying there's no spiritually (which is different from saying spiritual, those are two different words), no higher-dimensional phenomenons, and different planets are equally visible from Otherworld. He asked here on Jisho.org, the answer he got was native speakers wouldn't be able to answer this any better than a non-native. Now with all of that, only one, maybe two translations abide by Infinity's conclusion: Otherworld is higher dimensional, other interpretations being supplementary.
Now we move onto this scan here. Infinity gives us three takeaways:

1.

The scan says it's an entirely separate universe encompassing another level of reality. It does not say it's a higher plane of existence, that's misleading.

2 & 3.

Just because one thing is aspired off something else doesn't correlate to it having identical qualities, it has to actually show being identical. Surfbone elaborates on why in his response towards Infinity's post.
They had license to produce the game, not that it's gone through editorial mandates from Toei or Toriyama to make sure information is correct. Cindy wrote the handbook with Mike Pondsmith & Paul Sudlow, one of these three (Cindy) was executive producer for DB, DBZ, and GT, but you have to consider which version he had a help in. Cindy managed the English dub for DB, Z & GT, more specifically, Saban & Funimation in-house dub from the 90's-2000's. They helped market for multiple DBZ games in the west, Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Dragon Ball Z: Sagas, Super Dragon Ball Z, etc. Dub-only terms such as 'next dimension' & Home For Infinite Losers are brought up in the rulebook, there's a page about HFIL here. Both of those terms are in the scan Infinity shows in his post. Along with that, there're multiple contradictions & errors in that rulebook, for instance Freeza is described as being 'vaporized' by Goku on Namek. To see all the errors made watch this video, it is long, though. You can't say "Oh, but Toriyama has stated before that he considers his staff and others who work on extended Dragon Ball material to be more knowledgable than him" when the people you're citing are stating things like this.
Toriyama explicitly claims "people more knowledgeable about Dragon Ball". DBZ: Adventure game is not valid as holding it up to any amount of scrutiny shows they don't know more than Toriyama himself. Toriyama didn't 'soft approve' anything, his illustrations were in it, nothing less, nothing more. HFIL wouldn't be brought up if Toriyama did approve.

Dimension Of Swirling Lights

Now this argument is based on Gogeta & Broly's fight where they break reality. The post here is what we'll be looking at. Firstly, infinity sends an interview from the production team in DBS: Broly. Infinity claims the production team's goal was to create super dimensional special effects. Here's the problem with this, the interview linked is blatantly misrepresented. Makino & Yakoo talk about how modeling works, and Yokoo bringing up 'mathematical formulas' is referring to computer graphics/CG; they're talking about algebra & trigonometry n'shit, not 'higher dimensionality'.
Makino: First of all, we call it “modeling,” and create a three-dimensional model based on a design with settings and color specifications. It's the work of creating a "form" such as raising the character according to the design, creating a diorama-like background, and making it look okay from any angle. If you just create a "shape", it will end up as if the figure is just there. After doing the work called "setup" to put in, I will finally enter the animation work. The animation work is to bring the set-up model into the actual background, make it act, set up the camera, and finally create a picture like a storyboard. After that, we will add "effects" there. Finally, we will work on "compositing" to combine them. It's like shooting in anime. We use the same software that we used for the shoot, so if you give it to the photographer in that software's file format, they'll be able to do it with compatibility. Our job is to allocate that series of flows to each person in charge.
Makino: For the first time in this movie, we got to see character models. Including Mr. Shintani's corrections, I was able to show it in a state of perfection, so I was confident, but it actually received a good evaluation. I was very happy because they were interested and said, "I'd like to see it from a different angle--Lastly, please give a message to the readers who are looking forward to the movie.
Makino: It's a CG of a work that everyone in the world knows, so I'm making it with the feeling that I'm fighting. I hope you can feel that passion while watching the movie. I will make something that will meet everyone's expectations, so please look forward to it. This time, we will fight in various places, so the battle scene will change several times. One of them uses a background that can only be done with CG. Normally, we create a three-dimensional image based on the actual wilderness or the sea, but we don't have a complete original image for that scene. The director gave me an order saying, ``I want you to make something new that takes advantage of the characteristics of CG.'' It's going to be a technical story, but there is software called "Unity" that is good at constantly moving things with a huge amount of information in real time. It's software that's often used in games, but this time we're using it to battle in a place that doesn't actually exist, like a different dimension.
Yokoo: If you give the software information about what kind of atmosphere it should have, it will create a CG world that will make you think, "How about something like this?" Seeing that, we are also surprised, "Wow, it's going to be like this!" Different dimensions are expressed in mathematical formulas and converted into 3D. The technique used in other works has been further developed in this work, but I still don't understand it (laughs)
Not once is 'extra-dimensional' uttered throughout that whole interview. Although Super dimensional is actually mentioned once at the beginning, but it says "super-dimensional images with CG" so it's referring to it in a programming sense, specifically remote sensed images. So nothing about higher dimensions. Infinity proceeds to bring up spatial & temporal dimensions, but those don't have dimensional value.
Edit here: 超次元 Doesn't translate to super dimensional 100% of the time, it means transdimensional too, the kanji 超時空 [ちょうじくう] can translate to super-dimensional as well, and given the context on which super-dimensional is used, the kanji is not referring to 'higher dimensional space' unlike what Infinity said. So nothing about higher dimensions.

Koyama & Kaioshin realm

These scans are cited to argue Kaioshin realms is 7D because of Koyama, but problem is you can use Koyama's own words to debunk this. He's claimed his statements shouldn't be used and has no authority over Dragon Ball.

Jiren 'transcending time'

Jiren was only above Hit's timeskip not time. Hit states "At this rate, I won't have enough to keep him trapped until the end. He's simply too powerful." All Jiren did was overpower Hit and crush the puhttpsrple ball, he didn't transcend anything. Earlier the same fight, Hit's time skip was worked on Jiren. If Jiren really was transcendent over time, Hit's ability would've never worked in any point of the fight. 越える (Koeru) in this context refers to exceeding as in overpowering. It's being literal and we know that. Like said earlier, words are derived by context.
That's all. I had a lot to say about this specially about Otherworld. If you enjoyed this dumb little tangent thanks, I guess. Bye.

2023.06.07 13:28 bad_jake Going to my first locals next week any advice on my Kashtira decklist?

3x Pressured Planet Wraitsoth
1x Terraforming
2x Enemy Controller
2x Forbidden Lance

3x Pot of Prosperity
3x Infinite Imperm
1x Kash Big Bang
1x Kash Prep
Extra Deck:
1x Arise-Heart
2x Shangri-Ira
1x Red-Eyes Metal Flare
2x Zeus
1x Dark-Armed
1x Big Eye
1x Dracossack
1x Baron
1x Psy-Framelord
1x Garura
1x N'tss

1x Infinitrack Goliath
Side Deck:
3x Gadarla
3x Ghost Belle
2x Cosmic Cyclone
1x Feather Duster
3x Solemn Judgement
3x Evenly Matched

I'm also worried that, is Kashtira too toxic? I've seen all the videos around it but honestly I really like the art style, banishing is a cool mechanic (was previously playing swordsoul), and I love XYZ monsters. Also, for me it's not too complex of a deck and have managed to understand the flow. I just don't want to be like "Hey I'm the new guy." Then people proceed to think I'm lying when I play a Tier 1 deck.

2023.06.07 10:17 candyleader I Want to build a house in space

I have a specific itch that needs scratching currently.
I want to build a space house. The caveat is that I'm on steam deck so there are a few games immediately discounted.
I'd say the obvious answer is No Man's Sky but I want something with more... subnautica or raft vibes I guess?
I want to build a space house and slowly improve it to give myself the ability to venture slightly further from my space house next time to get better materials to slightly improve my space house to allow me to venture further from my space house next time to get better materials to slightly impro...
You know the loop right?
Astroneer is a no go, I want to go inside my space house.
Any recs? I'm aware of Drift, Astro Colony, Occupy Mars (apparently doesn't run on deck). I have the planet crafters but I think I'm waiting for 1.0 on that one before I jump in.
Stationeers apparently doesn't run on deck either and also the worlds are super boring imo.

2023.06.06 09:03 daddy_dex999 [Online][Other][NA] Only War!

Each of the manifold horrors of the galaxy is enough to drive a Human insane. Xenos monstrosities, otherworldly sorcerers and unholy aberrations from our darkest nightmares plague Mankind. Against everything that threatens Humanity's survival stand the massed ranks of the Imperial Guard.
In a galaxy sometimes without light and often without hope, they fight and die that others shall not. From the million worlds of the Imperium, their immense armies march endlessly to war. Countless soldiers, heavy battle tanks, thunderous artillery and sky-darkening flights of gunships are commanded by iron-willed officers whose chain of command is ruthlessly enforced.
Not for naught is the Imperial Guard known as the Hammer of the Emperor. Occasionally unwieldy, often indiscriminate, it is the Imperium's weapon of total and unrelenting force. To be a soldier in one of the Imperial Guard's unnumbered armies is to be one amongst billions of all-too-mortal warriors. Yet it is also to be a part of Humanity's greatest ever war machine, and to lend one's faith, strength and hate to that engine of devastation as it crushes all before it through sheer, brute force.
You play as a group of such soldiers. Not heroes, but mortals. By skill, resilience, and sheer blind luck, you must survive the worst hells that the galaxy has to offer. Your reward: a more dangerous posting on a more inhospitable planet fighting even greater enemies of your immortal emperor.
Hello! Since my last Warhammer 40k post was successful, and I have the free time, I thought I'd run another more focused campaign. I'll be using the Only War system to tell a tale of hellish war zones. The idea is to make the game a mix of tactical espionage action in the style of Metal Gear Solid, dark comedy, and hellish trench warfare in an almost survival horror style.
Knowledge of the setting is unnecessary. I'll most likely be setting this up on roll20, but if you own Tabletop Simulator, step right up to the front of the line. I'm in the PST timezone, and plan to have the games start in the evenings, but want to find a day and time that would work for the most players possible in NA. If you're from somewhere else, and want to sign up, just keep those time frames in mind.
Shoot me a dm on discord at Decks#1968 for more info
The Commissar is always watching.

2023.06.06 07:53 PinkPengin [Thank You] Very, very behind

These are not in any particular order - some may have come a few weeks ago, some today.
But I do have good news: I did NOT work on cards at all this weekend, because I spent Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday all doing amazing fun things with my wife as we kicked off our celebration of Pride month. For those who don't know, we currently have two houses, in two different states, one where she mostly lives (in the U.S. Pacific Northwest) and one where I mostly live (in the U.S. Southwest, known as the Cactus Cathouse). We are gearing up to sell our northern outpost house and live together in the Cactus Cathouse, and this was sort of our "last hurrah" weekend before showings and whatnot really get started.
But now, I'm trying to get cardthings caught up so that I'm not trying to deal with them during the eventual relocation, starting with these thanks and hopefully progressing on to a request and an offer tomorrow as time permits.
Also, someone in this (long) list sent me a lovely, large rainbow snail vinyl sticker, but I couldn't tell whose mail it came from. (Maybe u/amyt13?) Anyway, whoever you are, I appreciate you immensely and I'm sorry for not organizing myself better.
Thanks to:
(First of all, thanks to the flair team, because yikes this is the worst and I'm very sorry!)
u/amabisca - This handmade purple card (my favorite color!) is amazing and was such an uplifting surprise. Thank you so, so much!
u/amyt13 (x2) - Thank you for the beautiful handmade collage card, the Oscar Wilde card, and all the extras! I hope you are able to find a good place to call home too - the one you were describing sounds like my kind of town, and I hope it works out. I'll cross my fingers for you!
u/AppleCritter723 - This cute botanical card/letter I an opening from you is dated in April. APRIL, friend. I am sorry. It is full of good news and cute stickers and I swear I will write actual mail and not just send weird envelopes of things to you and your "bigger little" soon. I hope your Memorial Day weekend travels weren't too bad, and that Gandalf the adventurer is letting you occasionally stay inside. You created a meow-monster!
u/awachob - Goose!! I can't believe I got to be the goose! Thank you so much for a fun offer. (And for the neat stickers!)
u/blue-wanderer-quartz - I am very late saying thanks for the Five of Pentacles cat tarot sticker reading, but it was incredibly appropriate to read about pooling resources as my wife and I re-combine households in part due to love but in large part due to, well, wanting to actually have disposable income! I think it's interesting that we both chose pentacles for each other! (And the cat postcard your reading is on is very cute, I don't want to forget that!)
u/bluedecemberart (x2) - I love the vintage VA hospital postcard from Maine... and we already chatted about the "not noticing the chores" thing but rereading the card as I went to post this made me sure again that we are somehow the same person. WEIRD, but COOL. And your New York skyline postcard is lovely, and now I want to watch A Crown of Candy!
u/championvilla - I adore this MarioKart card! My wife and I used to play a lot (right now, we have the game systems packed for house-showing). I hope that your husband is continuing to feel better (and that the cat finally decided to get off of him, lol!)
u/chiquita61 - The sloth mermaid dolphin thank-you card with penguin stickers is absolutely wonderful... and I am so happy you liked my "reject" sticker card in all its glory!
u/comingtogetyoubabs (x6) - This crystal ball card with Petit's ABSOLUTE WISDOM is just amazing, friend. (Also, did I get a little teary at "writer of hugs in card form" MAYBE). And the amazing goodies you included - the cat-yang patch, your beautiful handmade notepaper... there is no way I deserve the awesomeness that is you "buzzing" into my life. And then the second cat card and all the goodies, including the adorable bookmark...! And THEN I realized you had hand-drawn me three tarot cards that you wrote about, AND then I found your origami letter... I am in awe, friend. You are wonderful!
u/cswl (x10) - This is what I get for not keeping up with my thanks, I feel silly with how behind I am for you, my dear friend! (Both in thanking AND in writing back.) Thank you for the cute plant notecard (I do not do Informed Delivery because it will just make me sad, I think); the red fox postcard (did you go to Fogo, which is one of my favorite places ever??); the "sources of acid" postcard (I always feel better when I have time for myself too, and also always delay it too long); the absolutely delicious LouPaper charcuterie board postcard (I have both too many cards and somehow never the ones I really feel like I wish I had to send people); the postcard from The Lion King (yay garage sale days!); the Strange Planet vibrating cat postcard (so outnumbered, I have given up, they are in charge now); the two different New Yorker cartoon cards (you are 100% right - hard times are harder on the one holding down the fort in SO many ways, been there/done that, and also guilt trips suck and I'm sorry the person tried to send you on one); the cute bird saying hi card (the one-house thing was her idea first, and it will definitely be for the best, though I need to make sure I keep focusing on me too!); and especially thanks for "Content Lives Everywhere" collage you made - that is just wonderful. You are so great. I am sorry I'm such a bad postal pal but I'm trying to do better!
u/dazeyferry (x2) - My dear friend, this penguin with flowers card is AMAZING and I am so, so grateful that you thought of me when you saw it. And the little floral thank-you card addition was perfect as well. I love you and I am so glad we are friends! As far as bingeworthy shows - have you seen Ted Lasso? Schmigadoon? (Both on AppleTV.) Those are amazing. We also started watching Hello, Tomorrow, which is a bit sad sometimes but really good! I'll try to think of some more, too.
u/draconic_healing - I love this little tiny Polaroid-style postcard - it's adorable! Please pet the kitty for me - I couldn't tell if you wrote "Bear" or "Bean" but both are great names!
u/dwrfstr - This gold penguin card is amazing and adorable and I cannot believe your luck to find it thrifted! I picked up a set of hundreds of vintage postcards from an art reuse store that's near where we met up, and I ended up with, like, 16 of the same weird chapel at a church camp in South Dakota, so you definitely win...
u/fancayschmanzayyy - Your cat thank-you card was wonderful (as were the cool stickers!) And most of all, I very much appreciate you telling me about your act of kindness and I especially appreciate your caregiving nature. I cared for my mom for many years before she passed away and stories like the one you told will always be especially important to me. You make a difference and I am so grateful you exist!
u/Fancykiddens (x2) - I feel terribly, terribly guilty for how late I am thanking you for this amazing CARD-CEPTION package!! First, from the pengin section: the pengin family you drew me, how awesome are they?! You are so talented! I almost never keep envelopes but this one got immediately saved with my "penguin stash." Then there was your beautiful handmade Frida Kahlo card - exactly my vibe, I love it! The penguin goodie bag with the penguins and their fish snackles inside was adorable too. And then, moving to the "monsteroo" or cute monster section, I adored your Monsters Inc. letter and goodies as well! I especially liked hearing that, at the time you wrote it, you were feeling particularly well and accomplished, and I adored hearing how much carding has helped your outlook. SAME, FRIEND. So much so!!
u/feellikebeingajerk (x2) - Holly Hobbie card (the first, maybe?) has arrived! And yes, it brought back awesome memories. I didn't get a lot of "trendy" things growing up, as my parents and I didn't have a lot of money, but there was a discount department store near us, sort of an early version of a T.J. Maxx or Ross that was called Hills, and it would sometimes get slight misprints or seconds of things like bedding, which is, I am -positive-, how I came to be able to have Holly Hobbie. And I don't remember anything "wrong" with it, so, way to go, Mom of PinkPengin, for that find! LOL. Also, thanks for the cool Papyrus thank-you card from your random offer, and for the stickers!
u/fieldofcabins - This adorable bee thank-you postcard is so great (and the penguin as the stamp image, ahhh!) I am glad your dad is healing and please let him know I'm still thinking of him. (And of course I'm always thinking of you, too!)
u/GizmoDOS - Thanks for the solar system postcard, friend! I loved hearing from you. Life really has been hectic lately. I hope yours is moving in the direction of settling down. Mine is going to be rough briefly but then hopefully a lot smoother!
u/hermitcreature - I love this Studio Ghibli-themed card and all the great stickers and dragon facts from your book (and the amazing Zimbabwean owl stamp)! I hope you will like your card from me in exchange when it arrives - I just sent it this week, I am very sorry!
u/HexagonalRainbow - I loved your anime postcard but even more, I loved hearing about your concert!
u/isar-love (x2) - These cartoon owls with their hats and shoes on your card from March are AMAZING! (And the accompanying postcard with more behatted owls also made my day!) I agree with you very much that owl facial expressions are the thing that especially warms my heart to them. They seem so intelligent and curious and often kind (especially in illustrations) with their big eyes looking right at me! I have several little stuffed-animal friend owls, including two very special ones named Swoops (who is tan) and Fwoops (who is pink, though his name reference is from fuschia - he is a "Fuschia Swoops" - way better than a Pink Swoops, who I fear would have to be "Poops," LOL!) Thank you so much for your wonderful kindness and friendship and fun mail!
u/jaimekj - Thank you for the floral card, great stickers and most importantly your note and your friendship! I do like New Mexico (more than my part of the Southwest, honestly, but we had family reasons we picked where we did)! I'm crossing my fingers about an interest-rate drop. If I had my choice, I'd either like to find someone bigger in Washington, or move back to Pennsylvania, I think. There are ups and downs to both. And I will VERY much hate going back to snow, that's one thing I do love about where I am in the desert!
u/jvanct88 - I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have a letter from you with an update (and updated address), dear friend! In one way, I am VERY sorry for all the things you have been finding out, but in another way I am happy that you finally know the truth and I believe that knowing it will be very helpful in having closure and a good feeling as you move to a new chapter in your life. And I am VERY hopeful that your tattoo came out amazing! I am a big, big fan of tattoos and piercings. A funny story is that I got 2 new tattoos and several piercings when my wife and I were separated, including a nosering, which she always said she hated. (She didn't mind other tattoos and piercings generally.) When we got back together, she apologized for ever saying that, and said how good it looks on me. That was nice, but I very plainly also told her, "I wouldn't care even if you hate it, because I love it and I'm keeping it forever." LOL! Anyway, I love this dinosaur princess cactus card and I am very happy to hear from you and will write to you again soon!
u/KatDuq (x3) - My dear friend!! This butterfly card you made to thank me for MY card in honor of your new letter opener is beautiful (as are the included penguin stickers, which are beautiful, of course!) I also loved your separate letter talking about the things you make. I do journal, sometimes, but I suffer from the problem of all notebook and journal-havers... I hate to USE the beautiful books I have lest I "mess them up!" What really helped me get out of that mindset somewhat was actually the Happy Planner notebooks, because I felt like I could always remove pages and rearrange! And now I am getting into bookbinding and I feel like that helps too because I can more easily make things "modular" and not have the fear of ruining a whole gigantic book right off the bat. I know that's perfectionism talking and I am working on getting rid of that mindset altogether, but for now, baby steps. And HUGE congrats on what you've sold, you definitely have a customer in me if you get an online store set up! Finally, thank you for the lovely oracle reading, which (unsurprisingly) was just what I needed to hear now, tonight, as I write this! I specifically didn't look closely at it until now because I figured I'd see it when the time was right and... yup. I did. You are amazing and I appreciate you sharing your beautiful new deck with me. (And that logo stamp you got! SO worth it, it looks amazing!)
u/littlemermaidxx - Your Pride Is Everyday postcard is beautiful - thank you so much! I have Pride happy mail coming your way too.
u/maiiiu (x3) - WOW, you are way too kind to me!! What an adorable thank-you postcard, first of all. And I adored your wonderful handmade penguin collage thank-you card too, and loved hearing the good news about your summer trip plans. I hope it is a truly special time for you and your dear best friend! And then this custom penguin stationery... WOW. You are just amazing and I am very grateful! (Also, the way you attached your sticker gifts in your collage card was great, I might steal that method.)
u/melhen16 - Where did you find this amazing desert-post-office-style card? Did you make it? It's amazing! (And thank you for the beautiful stickers, too!)
u/mumbagoespainting (x3) - Your handmade hometown card is so beautiful, my friend! I loved hearing how you learned to say it. (I admit - I get that one wrong on the first try and have to correct myself every time, despite being from not terribly far south, where we heard it more than occasionally!) And your watercolor dragon is absolutely fabulous!! I loved hearing that we have very similar color tastes - purples, grays, teal! Seeing the dragon pick up those colors was perfect. Finally, your black-and-white abstract card with the glitter made me smile, though I was sad to read about why you had to miss the trip... I hope you are feeling better! And, of course, thank you again for all your stickers and other extras and most importantly for your kindness and friendship. I am beyond grateful for you!!
u/ninajyang - I like the crafty postcard from Pipsticks! And yeah... Hairspray... love the music, definitely not sure about some other things... sigh.
u/nirelleth - I absolutely adore this great penguin and fox postcard for our "wish" exchange! I hope you like yours when it arrives, too. (I just sent it last week, I am so sorry for the wait!) I think my favorite fact about penguins is that they are not all polar; in fact, some of my favorites are temperate ones. (I say, in fact, that I myself am a "temperate pengin!")
u/non_avian (x3) - I am VERY sorry this has taken me so long to write (and even to open and fully enjoy). Your handmade Scoffby postcard with my past-present-future reading was absolutely amazing and is going on my "display shelf" of some of my most treasured cards! I need to know how you made his crystal ball, which is gorgeous! Also, please tell Scoffby that I am very much food-motivated (in fact, I just bribed myself tonight with hibachi). So, his signature chant is VERY well-placed when directed at me. I also adored your letter and the cute paper it was written on, and I am thrilled about the Furby washi card and all the goodies, too! I had no idea that Furby washi even existed, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised... and the capy noodles sticker and adorable penguins and everything else... I am so grateful. I have some mail coming your way very soon; all the "parts" are ready, I just need to put them together and actually get it sent!
u/Peonynote (x2) - Your cat thank-you card was adorable and most importantly, I am so excited for all your travels (and I LOVED seeing your penguin friends together!) And the lovely rainbow card with penguin stickers and super-cute penguin sticky note, in honor of Pride Month, made my day! I hope your walking is going well, still, now that it's getting warmer and stickier.
u/ResidentComposer1939 - I loved your sweet bird notecard and your penguin drawing (it's WAY better than my drawings, let me tell you!)
u/SherlockLady (x3) - Your beautiful butterfly card was lovely as it was, and then I saw the cute mini-card with the reminder about being the happiest/healthiest version of myself, AND the special penguin painting from your young carding apprentice... and wow, I just felt so special! What an awesome gift.
u/soft_distortion - This Gender Is Such a Drag postcard is perfecttttttttt. I loved hearing about the drag brunches too!
u/thecalendonianrose - This square penguin card is amazing and I am so grateful that you thought of sending it to me! (And all the stickers are lovely, thank you!) My wife and allllll the kitties say hello back.
u/TigerLady13 - This is definitely a late thanks, I apologize! But I appreciated the vintage Continental Divide postcard and the "Peng-Win" pun... made me giggle!
u/TyeDyeAmish - I love this pufferfish card, and I have really enjoyed getting to chat with you recently! Most importantly, how was the book sale?! I'm fairly certain it's one I've been to in the past, based on the date you said you were going, and I miss it and a few others in the area so much!
u/umeshufan - Why, yes, this Cat Island postcard DOES look like my house, and yes, there are really 19 inside, and even funnier, YES, I am allergic to cats. The thing is, you do build up a tolerance to ones you are around regularly, but when I travel and then come back, it is truly a nightmare. Thankfully I almost never let any in my bedroom and never to sleep, so I can at least breathe overnight!
u/wabisabi_sf (x2) - My friend, I am in awe of these amazing pink-and-penguin-themed pieces of happy mail!! I had never seen these before and I am DEFINITELY going to be getting more. You are so wonderful to me!
u/welshfancy (x5) - Thanks for the Laughlin postcard (very belatedly)! Your trip to Long Beach sounds almost as multi-stop as my recent cards' journeys to you, though thankfully you didn't need your passport, at least?! And thank you also for the amazing handmade "blooms" collage card (which, as far as I'm concerned, is appropriate for spring OR summer, so it seems perfectly timed to me); the great cat mini-card that you wrote while either eating breakfast or getting your tires changed on your travels; the penguin-with-J-based-life-preserver doodle (which I thought was GREAT, so don't even say it's worse than your others, which I also liked!); and your lovely letter on penguin paper, plus of course the bonus stationery! You spoil me!! I'm thinking of you as you try to decide "what's next" locationally, too.
u/yetanotherblankface - I think your beautiful handmade card for the "Hometown" meta challenge is giving exactly the right vibes! It certainly made me feel cozy and relaxed, which is the feeling I'd most like to associate with home.
u/yviantics - Your hand-drawn Pink Party Penguin postcard with its lovely hat, and the great penguin sticker, absolutely made my day!! I do not draw well at all and I am always amazed when people who can will share their talent with me. Thank you so, so much! (And, by the way, I tried the bananas-and-barbecue-chips combo and was really surprised at how good it was, so thanks for that, too!)
u/56thorns and u/UseYourRuler - Thank you for the wonderful postcard from the "Falls!" My wife and I were there to ring in the New Year for 2019 and I've been a couple other times too. Such a lovely place for a getaway, and it sounds like you had fun!
u/todayisfab, u/sebisrude and u/KeenEvergreen - In my stack of not-thanked-yet mail I found my very own postcard from our meetup, and it made me smile all over again. Thank you all so much, again, for a fun day. And to whichever of you put penguin stickers on this along with the cacti - I am super impressed that you pulled that off without me noticing, they are WAY too cute.

2023.06.06 07:51 Masta_nightshade Simple idea for a game mode i and i think others would love.

I've always been a comics fan. I've read the whole civil war arc and the planet hulk arc. I would LOVE to read more especially some of the more obscure characters.
I think an amazing game mode would be literally just a classic comic in mobil form. After reading you could play a game or 3 vs bots with a deck of cards containing characters from the comic.
It could be a pre made deck. This would allow new players to use cards they don't own.
Each week or month they could drop a new comic.
People would be interested in the next episode and log in each week just to read the comic. It would bring new eyes to old classic comics.
They could have boosters or maybe a variant as a reward each week.

2023.06.06 02:54 Ickyptang Jotaz patrolling outside of Broken Wing has my XP - and he won’t respawn 😂

I’ve been replaying Fallen Order on my Steam Deck before I start Survivor, and late in the game, after getting all abilities, I was doing some cleanup on Zeffo. I was in the Crash Site and being a little careless around the Jotaz patrolling outside the Broken Wing area, and he killed me. Annoying, but not the end of the world…
So, I come back, go over to that area to get my XP back from the Jotaz and he’s just… not there. Totally gone.
I rested at a meditation site, came back and he’s STILL not there. At this point I’ve rested at many meditation sites, gone off-world, rested off-world, come back and he’s STILL not respawning. Everything else respawns EXCEPT that one Jotaz. Other Jotaz’s respawn - including the other one in the Crash Site - but that dude has fully peaced out.
Incredibly strange bug. Not a big deal, as it wasn’t that much XP - but very weird.
My guess? The Jotaz was tired of being killed by Cal, saw an opportunity to get away with some XP, and went into hiding to spend his remaining virtual days on some tropical planet 😬

2023.06.06 02:53 Destrae [Trip Report] March 8-24 (Tokyo/Yokohama/Kyoto). 16 day weeb dream vacation - Kingdom Hearts concert, JJK exhibit, so many arcades!

I wasn't going to do a trip write up at all, but I'm planning a return trip in the Fall and I realized some of the things I learned on my first trip might be useful for other people, so here we go! I don't often see post write ups from people who are specifically into rhythm games/ arcades/ anime stuff

Dates: March 8 - 24, 2023 Background: Planned this trip mostly for myself but one of my friends decided to tag along fairly last minute. I had planned to spend the whole trip in Tokyo but the one thing she wanted to do was Kyoto, so we added a side trip + a very pleasant day at a Ryokan. I used Wanderlog to plan (HIGHLY recommend, this site is amazing), and my basic daily itinerary was morning shrine > pick an area to explore and have 1-2 major things per day. The person I was travelling with ended up taking a long ass time to get ready each day, so most of my morning stuff got cut or rearranged. Costs: I will fully admit I did not budget for food/ shopping, 100% vibes. I simply do not acknowledge what I spent

2023.06.06 02:24 Fabulous-Letter-5649 Engineer retires, and is replaced with a Human. (Pt 3)

Pt 1 If you haven't read it yet.

Pt 2 If you haven't read it yet.

Hope you enjoy Pt 3 and happy reading!

I had finally shown Will to his quarters and just I was beginning to leave he said,
"Oh great stars this is just wonderful! See I told you that housing is something the Federation can get right with humans!" He said eagerly and beckoning me to come inside.
Will's quarters were not of an exceptional size, no bigger than everyone else's, but still, it's a significant improvement over what he had been living in, Exploration ships are known for their far superior accommodations compared to naval ships, easily twice the size of the standard naval quarters, and you don't have to share it.
"Oh well this is just truly wonderful! You truly must see this! " He said once more.
"Well if you insist!" I said quite awkwardly as I shuffled through the door after him.
What was special about his quarters were the decorations, as Federation quarters are always set up prior to the arrival of the occupying individual, so all the decor was already there. Adorned in a human manner, with Earth plants, hardwood flooring, and an overall warmer, Earthy, color palette was selected.
In the quarters was a main room, with human furniture, a sort of, elongated seat that could fit at least three others side-by-side, lots of little tables with all kinds of colorful vegetation, though green seemed to dominate the selection.
"Would you like a tour! I made sure to have picked out everything before hand, you know that's not something you usually get to do on naval vessels so I wanted to take full advantage!"
"As long as I can get back to my post soon, I already wasted enough time because of that little accident you had with the synthesizer." I was quite frustrated with him, it was a relatively new emotion for me, for what it's worth I think he's a great guy, but oh galaxies is he ever annoying.
"Yes yes yes, I assure you everything can be done in time." I doubted that but went along nonetheless.
"So here's the main room, this is my lovely couch" gesturing to that odd chair of his. "And across from is a nice TV for me to relax when I get off my shift." I'll grant this to Will, he's a very enthusiastic person, which makes it very difficult to say no. Like Xor'Xoj my pet Tlonker from way back when I was a juvenile, just couldn't say no to it.
"So a TV is where you watch "Magic School Bus?"" I asked.
"Well, not just that, all kinds of other shows, movies, and I can play games on it too. Really all too much for me to go in to with our limited time."
"And here are the other rooms" Will pointed to this one room with a table and a synthesizer. I followed him in.
"This is where I'll probably be taking my meals, though I may occasionally join you all in the Cafeteria."
Stars, he was running all over the place. Where was he getting all that energy from? I thought to myself, but it was probably just another item to add to the ever-expanding list of weird human things. Will was growing on me, he just seems so... joyous. He had a certain care-free attitude, an eagerness, he just could flip like a switch, going from being all fired up and angry to happy, to in pain, to funny, to serous, and back to happy again, and sometimes he did several simultaneously. I'd never seen anything like it. I mean, it takes a lot to change the baseline mood of a Zorxian, meanwhile I'm left wondering if humans even have a baseline mood!
"So here is my bedroom!" He said just absolutely pleased with himself over his decoration job.
"Oh my galaxies what is that! What is that!"
On this large rectangular piece of foam and other things, which was adorned with fabrics of all different kinds, was a little black animal that had been startled underneath the structure these materials rested on.
"Oh that's just Kepler, she's my cat! She is just the cutest thing in the whole wide universe, isn't she!" Will was making this weird high pitched voice, not like the last time though this was different something about the way he spoke.
"Why are you doing that voice?"
"Oh that's just... gosh... how do I explain it... it's a human thing that we do whenever we talk to something that we think is cute."
"Can I see it? The cat I mean, it ran away under that weird structure in the middle of your room."
"Oh that structure, it's my bed, it's where I sleep."
"Sleep?"
"I'll get to that later but my communicator keeps going off. The captain is pissed about the whole power incident and how long this trip is taking already. Anyways, you wanted to get a closer look at Kepler?"
"What?! I need to head back to the bridge like, right now! And why isn't my communicator going off?" Just as will had started to grow on me just like that I was back to just absolutely fed up with is antics.
"I think the captain just figured that communicating with you is a futile effort since I probably won't do a good job obeying. Plus I'm kind of at the center of all this." Will was laughing! The captain was furious and he was laughing! That care-free attitude may be cute but oh was it ever annoying.
"Ok I'll just show you Kepler and we'll be on our way- you know what I'll just show you a picture!"
Opening up a picture on his TV revealed this innocent seeming pet to be a viscous monster, with huge claws and massive, fang like teeth that thing was a killer!
"OH MY PLANETS! OH! LOOK AT IT! OH! NO! JUST NO! AREN'T YOU AFRAID I'LL KILL YOU?!?!?" I was awfully distressed, more so at its implication for the safety of the rest of the crew, by this point I couldn't care less what happened to Will.
"Oh it's harmless! It spends most of its day sleeping, though it's a bit closer to what you would call hibernating. Well... sometimes it'll get a little... playful, but nothing more than a simple scratch, besides, she'll just stay here, in my quarters." This did little to reassure me, and I did NOT find it cute.
"Ok, now that we're done... with that let's just... quickly get back to the bridge..." All while Will was talking he was pausing to laugh! We'd be lucky if Captain Reloxyn doesn't re-assign us both to the second shift! I was panicking, I now think I know what Will means when he talked about being driven crazy by his co-workers, and... wait... HE was the one being driven crazy! I can't imagine how all those poor co-workers felt having to deal with is antics for so long!
We both ran, me at a full sprint, Will was having no issue keeping up, in fact he was skipping and I'm going to borrow a human word here but that little shit was skipping! How does he do it?! I get he's a human but how in Orion's name does he do it. How, under such a laid back exterior somehow lies some brilliant engineer, but I suppose I'd get a first hand look in if I get put on a scouting mission with Will, which I doubt, with what I already know about him he'd probably blow our cover before we could even get preliminary scans done!
When we got back to bridge Captain's hair was, you know what, I'll let his interaction with her speak for itself:
"Oh hey captain! You seemed to have calmed down, your hair isn't colored anymore!"
"THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S GONE INTO THE ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRUM YOU INSUBORDINATE NERVE PAIN!"
"Oh..." Will responded, all the care-free joy draining from his face.
The rest of the bridge had gone silent in fear of incurring even but a fraction of her wrath.
"Well... I can explain..."
"OH GO RIGHT AHEAD I CAN'T WAIT TO HERE THIS."
"You see... I had just wanted some water when I got to my office..."
"AND YOUR FIRST THOUGH WAS TO CRACK OPEN YOUR SYNTHESIZER?!"
"In my defense I was quite thirsty, and as a matter of fact I still am..."
"One of you! Get him a glass of water!" She clapped her tentacles together, Captain Reloxyn was NOT playing around with Will.
"Now, when I was but a hatchling, I used to hang out by the human dockyards of Cirsium-4 and I picked up a few human words, so, WHAT THE ACUAL FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?!?!"
"I wanted a glass of water..."
"THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU GOT TO YOUR QUARTERS!!!"
"Well, I had successfully made the same modification on what I thought to be the same kind of synthesizer on FSS-109, but I now know the wiring is totally different."
The Captain thought for a long time, long enough to slowly, but surely calm down.
"SINCE the issue was just contained to your office, I think the wise thing to do, especially since you're new here, is to let you off with a warning, don't try and pull a stunt like that again, and at least have some respect for my time or the future consequences are going to only escalate from here."
The entire bridge, and I mean, entire bridge let out just a massive sigh of relief with her surprisingly merciful judgement, and to this day I'm surprised the doors weren't blown off by the air pressure caused by all that exhaling, but I suppose all that yelling had calmed Captain down, as by the end of her conversation with Will, her hair was undulating a healthy turquoise.

90 Solar Periods Later:

After completing the survey mission of the Ix system, we had noticed that Ix-5 was harboring a pre-FTL society, just turning the corner into the Atomic Age thanks to their recent discovery of nuclear power, me and Will were assigned to do the scouting mission, blend in with the locals, get some intelligence, just standard protocol. Ix-5's Earth like environment had much of us worried about going down, hence Captain Reloxyn's decision to assign Will to the mission, and I was assigned thanks to my endless experience on pre-FTL scouting missions in an attempt to counterbalance Will's... inexperience.
Situated in a high-altitude orbit as to avoid detection, we readied the landing shuttle for the mission, it wasn't exactly small, with about the same living area as the standard Explorer-Class Quarters like the ones on our ship, the only difference is that we would have to share it, and the flight deck took up some of that room, so, a little tight but we'd be fine.
Will had packed some things to bring with him, just a camera, some equipment, and a photo of Kepler, who I still didn't trust.
"Let's get this show on the road!" Will exclaimed with that usual twinkle in his eyes.
"Let me guess, It's a figure of speech."
"Naturally."
*FLICK* "Switching to internal systems." I had started the un-docking procedure.
*FLICK* "Decoupling"
*FLICK* Separation"
The shuttle produced a loud THUNK indicating a successful separation
"T-7 seconds to minimum clearance" While Will had said this with a tone of professionalism, he had that stupid grin on his face, and that glint in his eye that said all I needed to know.
"Main Engine Start!" I said once the timer had run down to 0 while hovering my hand over the button that would tell the guidance computer to begin the de-orbit burn.
*Click*
The shuttle's engine came roaring to life, both of us being shot forward by the acceleration, only being stopped by our seatbelts.
"WOO HOOO!" Will shouted, overcome with excitement at the prospect of stepping foot on an uncharted world.
The rest of the descent was pretty calm, running through checklists, taking weather data to find a safe re-entry point. Floating around in Zero-G. So mainly we just talked.
"So, how has everything been in navigation?"
"Oh, just the same old same old, plot a course here, plot a course there. Nothing special."
"Wish I could say the same for Engineering." Will chuckled.
"We've had some close calls down there, nothing you should be concerned about." Will was doing a barrel roll.
"Really, like what?" I responded, mildly concerned.
"Well, we don't normally talk a lot about the minor stuff, just trying not to cause any panic, but we did have one instance where a small asteroid, only weighed a few grams, but we were exiting from jump so our relative velocity was... very, very high, so even something tiny like that can do a lot of damage. Shields were still spooling up though and it slipped through, but thankfully the jump drive was still generating its gravitational field so it got pulled away, it passed just 5cm from the hull."
"Oh my." I was absolutely astonished, I had no idea these events were taking place.
"What's the likelihood of something like that happening again?" I asked him, hoping for an optimistic response.
"Well, after it happened we launched an investigation and made the required fixes, the reactor had to be upgraded to produce more power so we could run the shields while we were spooling the jump drive down, so it won't happen again."
"That's reassuring, happy to hear that." I responded, relieved at his answer.
"So how's everything going with your family?" Will asked.
"Oh, you don't want to hear about a dangerous close call we had in navigation?" I said, laughing throughout.
"No I'm just messing with you, we don't really have those, but my family is doing great thanks for asking! My brother is going to be signing up as a maintenance apprentice aboard FSS-203 so that's exciting!"
"Wow they're already up in to the 200's?! Man, I only left 90 days ago and we were at what, 150?"
"Remember what you said to me, when you first got here? "If you want peace, prepare for war.""
"Yeah something like that." Will grunted as he pushed himself off the wall and floated over to the food designed for use on the shuttles.
"Hey, care for a toast of... lets see... Nutrient drink. Never mind."
"You humans, you're just picky eaters, it's not that bad." I responded half jokingly.
"Oh I assure you they are indeed "that bad" it tastes like rock."
"You humans and your taste." I replied, in a sarcastic manner.
"Well, my family is doing... okay." Will trailed off.
"Could you care to elaborate." I turned myself around to face him.
"Well my brother is just... an absolute asshole. My sister is great, just a wonderful person but, oh great Orion's Belt is Mike just about the most asinine human you'll ever meet."
"Oh really?" I was rather intrigued.
"We never really were friends, he and his stupid friends picked on me, bullied me for being... different. It was just horrible, but you know, one day I saw a recruitment poster for the Federation Corps of Engineers, and a lightbulb went off, and here I am now" Will by now had floated back to the flight deck and just stared off into the abyss, his eyes were getting watery.
"And now I'm what, more than 150,000 light-years from home exploring the Large Magellanic Cloud." Will let out a small chuckle.
"Are you okay? Are your eyes okay?" I asked noticing how they pooled up in his eyes instead of falling due to the absence of gravity.
"Yeah I'm fine." Will said, wiping his eyes.
"I didn't know it was like that."
"Oh I've gotten everything sorted now, everything's okay now, has been since I joined, and this new job is going great, haven't regretted switching in the slightest." His usual demeanor had returned.
"Now, let's get ready to land!" that sparkle returning to his eyes and that stupid grin began to form as he positioned himself back into his seat.
"Ok... just have to look over some weather data... hold on... here's the population scans... okay, I'll have to feed it into the computer to double check but right here seems good." I said, pointing to an ocean.
"We'll enter here, and glide over to here" I slid my hand over to an island.
"We can cloak the shuttle and just make our way over to the nearby city, once we get our disguises of course." I was tapping one of my fingers on the screen over a city.
"Disguises? What kind?" Will responded, leaning toward me.
"Oh just some prosthetic makeup, the inhabitants aren't to dissimilar from us, so minimal work is required."
"Wonderful. You've done this how many times before?"
"32, but none with planets this advanced."
"Hey, you remember what I said before undocking?" Will mentioned, turning to me with a grin both bigger and more stupid looking than ever before.
"Let's get this show on the road!" I replied with the same level of enthusiasm as he had just a few hours prior.

_________________________________________
A dark planet turned slowly in the void bathed in the light of an old yellow star far past its prime. The planet was old, unlike the countless beings that scurried across its blasted surface. From the vantage point of space far above, the gigantic craters that covered its surface were painfully apparent. Some terrible bombardment had nearly torn the planet in two sometime in its ancient history.
These were the thoughts foremost on the mind of the vast entity that observed the world from the depths of a large misshapen ship of truly gargantuan proportions. The ship orbited the planet far enough away to be unseen, a truly difficult task due to its almost moon-like size.
Deep in the ship’s core, a consciousness woke fully. This being had slumbered for millennia as they waited for the ship’s more automated systems to bring them to something interesting. As they awoke this entity checked the ships logs, two thousand years of reports were absorbed and compiled in mere millincrements such was the being’s incredible processing power.
They stretched mentally, running their consciousness throughout every lesser ten of the ship's millions of greater tens of circuits and wires. It had been centuries since they had last woken for more than a few increments, it was a good feeling.
The ship’s computer communicated with them. “Master Neel, It is good to have you with us.” the computer said nonverbally. The communication happening instead as a base impression across his many connections to the system all at once.
Neel observed the planet remotely using some of the vast worldship's many external sensors. After a few moments of observation Neel inquired the computer. “Have we traveled to this planet before?”
The computer replied quickly “I do not believe so, it bears passing resemblance to a planet we visited in the far past. But it can't be the same planet.” the computer concluded.
Neel frowned and then decided to exit his stasis chamber. The heavily shielded inner sanctum of the ship was a mess of electrical conduits and databanks that held his vast intellect when the ship was underway. Using faster than light means of propulsion could damage many of the curiosities in his vast collection and so for many tens of millions of greater increments he had traveled the cosmos slower than the speed of light.
While slow it was a deliberate action to protect him from the watchful eyes of the obliterators. The destroyers commonly kept watch over the cosmos and were known to eliminate those they could not contain or control. Neel had no wish to be destroyed and so took their time getting around for the sake of stealth. Even the destroyers would be unlikely to detect a single ship not breaking the natural laws in a vast and ever expanding universe.
Disengaging their mental locks, Neel disconnected from the artificial sanctuary and into their physical vessel. Their vessel was an artificial body of sorts, fashioned in a form that Neel found pleasing.
Their vessel was very tall with six manipulating tentacle-like metal arms and a multitude of pointed insect-like legs. Their face was a mess of tubes and wires with no discernible features other than the five bright green glowing eyes that stared out at the world around them intensely.
Neel’s consciousness settled down into the large body like it was a comfortable bed, an electronic sigh passing through them as they disconnected from the ship.
Neel started their vessel’s internal vacuum generators. Devices of their own design that drew electrical power directly from the quantum fluctuations of the universe. Quite a simple thing really, they must seem remarkable to those not nearly as versed as them in the nature of the universe. But Neel was well versed indeed, they knew the purpose of it all, and the dark knowledge often made them wish they had never discovered it.
Turning their attention back to their muted surroundings Neel activated the bridge’s lights with a thought. The ship was a part of them, though simultaneously separate. Together they made a complete entity, though Neel admitted that it was sometimes less distracting to be on their own instead of bonded to the Preserver. That was the name he had chosen for his worldship upon its completion. He had no memories of the event, or of how it had been built. Neither did the Preserver, instead Neel’s earliest coherent memory was that of light. Blinding light.
A star exploding and the ship jumping into emergency compression drive to escape the blast. They had arrived many light years away damaged and broken from the violent energies that had lashed the ship. But they had survived.
Neel scuttled across the deck and to one of the automated steering consoles. They double checked the ship’s course for accuracy and were satisfied to see no inherent issues.
Next they walked though the ship for a time to get to the records hall. They could have zipped there almost instantly with a thought, but they had always enjoyed the action of taking their time. They had a nearly infinite amount of it after all.
The Preserver chimed at them as they walked. “If you are going to the records hall to check the data I can give you access here and save you the trouble Master Neel.” The disembodied voice said in a modulated tone and frequency.
Neel waved a series of arms towards one of the many wall mounted sensors that the ship used to see and replied “Why? What would be the purpose of walking if not to enjoy the walk. I know you could have forwarded the data to me directly on the bridge, but there is a simplistic pleasure to taking one’s time. How many times have I told you that old friend.”
The ship was silent for a few increments as Neel scuttled down dimly lit metal passageways and through dusty hatches. They shook their head in a strange yet familiar motion as they took in the state of the ship. It was dirty, grimy almost.
Neel paused by a strange bundle of filaments and tested them with a single flexible manipulator digit. Plucking them curiously Neel found they seemed to be organic. In fact as they touched them they noticed a small and curious creature skuttle out of the dark in the direction of the disturbance. Delighted at this new and fascinating discovery they coaxed the small creature out into the light.
They observed it closely, zooming in on its features while scanning it in multiple electromagnetic spectrums. Neel found that the creature seemed to fluoresce in the ultraviolet spectrum, its small body covered in swirling organic patterns. It must be able to see into the ultraviolet spectrum Neel mused, otherwise what possible purpose could such patterning serve?
Reaching into a recess in their body they produced a specimen stasis capsule. Carefully scooping up the creature, they activated the micro stasis field generator and the small curiosity seemed to freeze in place. Replacing the container they then turned and continued along the corridor making a mental note to return and analyze the filaments more closely at a future time.
It took a little longer than Neel remembered to reach the great library, which made sense as the Preserver was constantly in flux. They entered the room and slowed to a halt. It always hit them when they entered into the massive space for the first time after a lengthy hibernation. The room was lit with bright yellowish lights high in the cavernous ceiling. The walls were covered in shelves and databanks, not a single square length was bare of some form of data storage medium.
Neel walked in amongst the towering shelves and ran their fingers along the uncountable thousands of books, manuscripts, scrolls and data crystals stored within small stasis cabinets. Hidden inside this sanctum was Neel’s life’s work, the compiled data of tens of thousands of worlds, millions of species and a billion years of searching the universe for something more.
Sometimes when the ship was traveling the void between stars Neel would come and spend years here, just absorbing the ancient knowledge. But today they were looking for something specific. Moving along to one of the many wall mounted dataports, they inserted a spike like digit from the end of a flexible tendril. The full enormity of the vast library exploded into their conscious mind, only their prodigious intelligence keeping them from being overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of data.
Searching for a while they found the folder they were looking for and accessed its location. Neel was in luck, it was remote accessible meaning they wouldn't have to traverse kilometers of this labyrinth to find the data. While that was usually an enjoyable experience, Neel found that their curiosity was overwhelming their patience.
The data filled their mind and Neel saw a planet spinning tranquilly in their mind's eye. The planet that bore a striking similarity to the one they now orbited, in fact, comparing the star logs and accounting for drift, the constellations were the same too. That proved it, they were in fact in the orbit of Ixninth, the evolutionary homeworld of the peaceful humbub.
Neel cocked their head, that was odd. The last time they had been in contact with the humbub their planet was nearing a full scale type one civilization. Full planetary control was theirs and they had taken the first tentative steps out into their solar system with a few far flung colonies and outposts in the orbit of the outer planets.
Now there was nothing, no evidence of the star realm they had once ruled. Something must have happened while Neel had been traveling through the cosmos. Something no doubt related to the strange crater-like formations on the planet’s surface.
Neel scanned the other planets in the system and found that most bore evidence of similar impacts, a few of the smaller moons seemed to have been obliterated entirely. Just the drifting charred remains in orbit of their scarred planets.
They addressed the computer once more verbally. “Preserver, we have indeed visited this system before. It is the humbub’s home system.”
The ship spoke through their implant, the disembodied voice cool and calm while it discussed topics of annihilation. “It would seem some sort of natural cataclysm must have befallen them then. There is evidence of incredible kinetic bombardment. Perhaps a rogue black hole disrupted the outer debris fields?’ the computer speculated blandly.
Neel looked back to the images of the systems battered planets. “I believe something terrible has happened here, are you sure there is no evidence of foul play? No signs of void conflict?”
They began to walk out of the library and towards the main atrium. The Preserver asked “Are you telling me to scan for debris or asking if I had already done so?”
Neel paused and apologised “Yes, I am sorry old friend. You have of course anticipated my question and scanned the area for wreckage. I can postulate based on your silence that you did not find any evidence to support the claim?”
Neel started walking again as the ship confirmed their observation. “I will of course continue to scan the area in case of potential hostile threats, but I do not expect to find anything of note. It looks like the act of a hostile universe, not the acts of barbaric lifeforms.”
Neel nodded again, this time entirely for their own benefit. That is about what they had been expecting anyways, if the growing theory in their mind was correct then they would likely find no evidence of foul play at all. At least, not in the conventional sense.
Perking up a little their green eyes shone bright as a new idea struck them. “Preserver, scan the main planet. Look for any signs of technology or ruins of technology. I will get to the bottom of this situation one way or another.”
The computer replied “Already started when it became clear to me you were set on this investigative action. I can report with ninety five percent certainty that there are no technological ruins on the planet. There is a large and well preserved ruin in the upper hemisphere. Would you like a scope on it?”
Neel waved at the air and replied “Yes, yes of course. Let me see what you have found.”
In their mind they saw the feed from one of the massive ship’s many outward facing telescopes. On the current one they saw it swivel towards the planet. Enhancing the image it zoomed in until Neel could almost count each blade of grass on the ground. In front of their very eyes was a large collection of half buried structures. While they did not look technological in origin, any clue to a history undiscovered was a good clue.
“Good work my friend, I will have to make sure we pull a flyby on a blue hypergiant giant so you can recharge your entanglement drives. You earned it.” They spoke to the Preserver in fondness.
The ship answered in a much more subdued manner “That would be appreciated Neel. My compression generators have been a bit chilly of late. I assume you will want to venture to the surface personally? May I suggest an assortment of weapons?”
Neel waved a hand as they entered the vast and colorful main atrium. It was only a few kilometers from the bridge, but it was a sight well worth the walk. That coupled with the fact that it connected directly to the small hangar bay where the many parasite ships were stored.
Neel walked across the room to the hangar and entered one of the small single occupant shuttles. The Preserver spoke once more in their mind. “If you are intent on going down to the surface would you at least let me launch an orbital observation platform to assist you?”
Neel paused at the controls and then said “Yes, might as well. You never know what’s going to happen in the future, that's what makes living in the present so exciting.”
***********
Jrax woke with a satisfied stretch, today was the day. He had been busy excavating the ruins of the forbidden zone in secret for almost a full year now. Only Zieve knew he was here, and the young man was unlikely to turn him in as he was just as interested in the mysteries of the ancients as he was.
Jrax stood to his feet and twisted at the waist in a futile attempt to crack his lower back. Unsuccessful he looked around, he couldn't see Zieve anywhere, usually the young man was out here before he had even had a chance for his morning zalv. The comforting warmth of a fresh cup of the dark orange liquid was a better wake up than anything else he had yet to discover. He had shown the benefits of drinking fresh zalv to a few of his colleges but it had yet to fully take off. Something about the dried and powdered fruit gave him a zest for life and alertness that was addictive in its effectiveness, and a little addictive in general.
But that was not the important reason he was here. He put a small pot of the mixture on the boil as he pulled his notebook out of his waist pouch. The small leather bound manuscript contained everything he knew of the ancients and their strange ways of life.
According to the few tablets and inscriptions he had so far recovered, the ancients lived in the void and traveled this strange realm of nonexistence in vast ships of solid metal. Why they would have needed to be made of metal made no sense to him. Surely wood would have been much lighter and cheaper? Maybe it was a style thing, from what he could gather the ancients made almost everything out of metal. Such was their vast power and wealth they were able to extract metal from the void itself.
This had always sat ill with him, everyone knew of the void, the space outside of reality. But surely they couldn't do such things as the void was empty, wasn't it? Perhaps the great teachings warning of the demons that lurked in the void were false after all. It was said that the void used to be full of life, an infinite world to build upon. One day the demons had come from beyond the realms of the humbub and devoured all that existed without till at last they rained fire and death upon Ixninth. The celestial realms of the humbub had been reduced to ashes and the survivors fled their metal cities in terror as they were consumed by the angry earth.
He shook his head. The mythos of their people was a fractured thing, handed down largely through word of mouth by millennia of terrified priests who had no real understanding of what they should be so afraid of.
He knew, it had been a hard truth to swallow but in his studies of the forbidden ruins he had made discoveries. Discoveries like the identity of their ancient destroyers.
They were not demons at all, they just looked like them, their bodies twisted and monstrous, their hunger for destruction nearly insatiable. They killed for fun and destroyed the remains, the fact that they hadn't killed all of the ancients was a miracle likely attributed to the paranoia of certain individuals. Places like these ruins had been ancient refuges to them, structures buried far into the guts of the mother earth called bunkers. An affront on nature, but necessary for the survival of their race.
It had taken thousands of years from what he had been able to gather before the planet was once more survivable on the surface. They left their ancient bunkers and found that all that once had been was no more. They had begun again.
Jrax was happy to be alive, especially knowing some of the struggle that his ancestors must have gone through just to survive. He put thoughts of such things out of mind and busied himself combing his fur. It wouldn't do to get mangey knots from a lack of self attention, he was a respectable scholar afterall.
His snout crinkled in a small snarl as he thought of Primo Haxix, the premiere leader of the Church of Brox in his home city of Broxix. The man was a devout follower of Brox’s teachings, and his most severe hurtle to spreading the truth of things. The closeminded man refused to see reason.
Done with his morning grooming he pulled on his open fronted work shirt, the rough fabric a little itchy against his fur but necessary to protect him from biting insects and the sun. It was hot near the ruins, the lack of vegetation one of the reasons the Primo called the land cursed. From what he had found it was no more cursed than any other piece of land, it had something to do with things called water concentrators he had discovered. He didn't understand the concept fully, but it seemed that the area was perpetually dry like the Neeix Desert to the south. A strange concept but it certainly explained why nothing would grow there.
Putting on his sandals and grabbing his excavation kit he slung the bag over his shoulder and started out of camp. He dodged around and through a thick copse of trees, his camp hidden from view in order to protect it from fanatics and the church’s spies. The area around the ruins was constantly under surveillance, he had been spotted a few times and chased but luckily his identity had never been uncovered.
He checked that the coast was clear and then made a quick transition to the bushes a few dozen feet away. Sighing as he didnt hear the telltale sounds of pursuit he continued on. The pack was heavy but he was undeterred.
Normally traveling alone into the wilderness would be tantamount to suicide, the many ferocious predators of their homeworld converging on a lone individual, but he was unafraid. The ruins protected him, some sort of aura seemed to surround the area that deterred the predators from approaching. He had read of it on the inscriptions, it was called a protection grid in the ancient texts that adorned the walls of the ruin, but he had yet to truly parse what it meant.
Whatever it was he was grateful for it as it allowed him to work in peace without constantly having to watch his back against attack from the abominations the demons had left behind.
He walked along the narrow and hidden path he had forged through the dense undergrowth towards the ruins. He shook his furred head, Zeive was probably already there. The young man was always excited to help him make some new discovery or ancient find. Yes, there was nothing to worry about.
Almost as soon as he told himself that he had nothing to worry about he tripped and landed hard on the soft sandy soil. Crawling to his feet he heard the unmistakable sounds of clanking armour plates and was soon surrounded by church soldiers. Resplendent in their brown leather greatcoats and shining steel breastplates.
“Oh..” Was all he said, a plethora of steel spear points at his throat.
Another sound met his ears and he looked behind him. From the path he watched a magnificently maned man stroll towards him, crimson cloak over his brushed leather overcoat covered in fine gold buckles. It was Primo Haxix, his biggest detractor and the most powerful person in all of Broxix.
Primo Haxix strode to him and laughed, a thoroughly nasty sound, devoid of mirth or joy. “Wow, I knew it had to have been an ignorant son of a demon to have crossed into the forbidden zone. But you? You have got to be the dumbest intellectual I have ever met. Clap him in irons, bring him to the fortress of Brox.” The ostentatious humbub then strode away regally as if they cared no more for his welfare, and they likely didn't. Jrax heard the unmistakable sound of a frourn drawn carriage, likely to carry the Primo’s lazy ass back to the capital.
One of the soldiers produced a set of iron clamps which they applied to his wrists, the metal pinching his arm hair painfully and he chirped in discomfort.
“Follow me or I will make you follow.” The man said gruffly.
Jrax did as he was told. No reason to get a beating on top of his arrest.
The soldiers led him through the brush and out to the main roadway. The road was simple hard packed earth, but it served its purpose. Leading right to the edge of the forbidden zone.
He snorted as they led him back along the road towards Broxix. It was a large city, almost fifty thousand inhabitants lived and died within an afternoon’s hike of the ruins and yet they knew nothing of their own history. The Church taught that the demons had destroyed their ancestors and all they had built before Brox took them into the belly of Ixninth for their protection. But that wasn't entirely true. It wasn't the whole truth in any event, and in Jrax’s opinion that was tantamount to lying.
They marched for an hour before the leader of the troop called a halt near a small roadside inn that catered to pilgrims. He looked at Jrax and said gruffly “We are stooping for refreshment, would you like some water?”
Jrax nodded suspiciously and the man gestured to a few of the others to go into the building.
Jrax watched as the trio of so-called holy soldiers kicked the door open and rushed in, swords drawn. Screaming and the sound of crashing furniture could be heard and Jrax chirped angrily but was kept from remarking by a threatening glare from the troop leader.
After a few more minutes of this the sounds ceased and the three soldiers exited carrying food and wine as well as a small bladder of water.
The wine and dried meat morsels were shared about as the troop leader approached with the water and stopped. Staring at Jrax, the man proceeded to unstop the bladder and pour its contents into the dirt as his feet.
When the skin had been completely emptied the troop leader laughed curly and gestured at the small mud puddle. There you go blasphemer, drink up.
A chorus of nasty chuckles sounded from all about as Jrax just stood his ground.
The leader stopped laughing, his face turning from savage mirth to rage as he drew his sword and pointed it at Jrax’s throat.
“I said drink! Do it now or so help me Brox I’ll…” the large armoured man started to say but Jrax cut him off smugly.
“Or you will what? You can’t kill me or you would have already. No, Primo Haxix wants my punishment to be public.” Jrax spat. “He wouldn't let a little pissant like you take his triumph away from him, so no. I will not drink, nor will I eat unless it is something tasty and nutritious. I would rather starve than allow such ignorant fools to debase me.” he said with a smug chortle.
The now enraged troop leader drew his sword in a threatening manner and Jrax felt his knees shake slightly in fear. But he stood tall and firm, not allowing his terror to show on his face. He would show these zealous assholes what it meant to truly serve a higher purpose, even if it meant he would die anyways.
The leader lowered his weapon and sneered. “Let's see how smug you are when we take you to the chamber of repentance. We will see who gets the last laugh.” the man said angrily. “Okay, form up and move out you lazy sons of snurlg. We need to reach the Fortress of Broxix by mid afternoon.”
Jrax was shoved by one of the soldiers behind him who growled “Get moving scum.”
He shook his head sadly, the road was long and the sun was high. But he would walk with shoulders straight and head held high, for he knew his cause was just.
