He finds the coincidence significant. He stops in on his way back from the hospital, finds it full of kitschy junk.
52:30: Joe wonders if the 2 coincidences are significant, that something is going on, imagines it's his late father, asks Lester what he thinks.
54:00: Lester says he thinks it's because Joe is concerned about death, that, if he looked carefully at other events in his life, he'd find similar coincidences, worries that saying so may harm the comfort Joe gets from feeling that someone is looking after him.

2023.05.30 02:05 TyFrom99 [Internet Culture] How Genius.com turned their back on their community and went bankrupt.
I originally wrote this script for a video I made, this is the (
somewhat) condensed text version;
Background: Genius, formerly known as Rap Genius, is a website that provides annotations and explanations for song lyrics, poetry, and other forms of text. It was founded in 2009 by Mahbod (Maboo) Moghadam, Tom Lehman, and Ilan Zechory.
The idea for the website originated when Mahbod, who had been fired from his law firm, was staying at his friend (Ilan)'s house and started explaining the meaning behind rap lyrics to Tom (Ilans Roomate). Tom who was working helpdesk at an investment firm at the time, quickly developed the site RapExegesis, which later became known as Rap Genius.
In its early years, Rap Genius operated as a niche platform for rap enthusiasts to delve deeper into the meaning and context behind their favorite songs. However, in 2011, the site gained significant popularity,
attracting over 1 million unique monthly visitors). Recognizing its potential, the co-founders implemented a forum on the site, further fostering a sense of community among users. Rap Genius also received $1.8 million in seed funding from Y Combinator, a renowned startup accelerator, which allowed the co-founders to leave their day jobs and focus on the site full time. At the time it was became the fastest-growing start-up in Y Combinator history.
2012: As Rap Genius continued to grow, its influence extended beyond rap music. In 2012, the platform expanded its annotations to include non-rap songs and
even parts of the Holy Bible. This move broadened its user base and attracted a more diverse range of contributors. The site's unique approach to annotation, combining entertainment and education, drew attention from both music fans and literary enthusiasts.
The success of Rap Genius caught the eye of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z), which invested $15 million in the company. The move by A16Z was influenced by Marc Andreessen's love for their annotation feature,
one he had originally wanted to implement in his web browser Netscape but had to remove due to server issues. This infusion of capital enabled Rap Genius to scale its operations and pursue ambitious growth strategies. With increased resources, they improved their annotation platform, added new features, and hired more staff to handle the growing user base.
2012 would be a big year for Rap Genius, they had grown to over 10 million monthly users, 17 full-time employees, and implemented a verified artists feature to give verified annotations behind the meaning of lyrics.
2013: Despite its rapid expansion, Rap Genius found itself embroiled in controversies in 2013. Mahbod Moghadam, known for his eccentric personality, posted a
photo of a dinner with Nas, Ben Horowitz and Mark Zuckerberg to Rap Genius's Instagram after being told by Zuckerberg not to. This act led to a public apology demand from Zuckerberg, highlighting the need for a more professional approach to business partnerships.
While Mahbod did apologize, later during an interview about the incident Mahbod would tell Zuckerberg to quote -"
Zuck my Dick". Something similar to what he would
tweet at Warren Buffet later in the year, while starting a Warren Buffet diss track competition on the genius site. This incident lost the Rap Genius team a meeting with Jay-Z.
In May the trio was scheduled for what many saw as the first public introduction to Rap Genius,
a 30 minute panel at the annual tech conference TechCrunch Disrupt. Their panel would solidify what many already thought of the trio; labeled "foul mouthed, Tech-Bro douchebags", they played into the personas thought up to try and attract attention, something very different in the tech scene. They also said that the future of Rap Genius wasn’t Rap Genius, but "News Genius". Adding that they were actively working on spreading the annotation aspect to “Every website on the internet’’, as well as saying in just a year Rap Genius will be “bigger than facebook”.
In July they added Rock Genius, Poetry Genius and News Genius to the site. With the new sections, the site was more popular than ever, and the forum was exploding. That is until they were delisted by Google in December for
predatory SEO tactics.
Genius had been agreeing to tweet out rap blogs in exchange for the blogs posting Genius links to the songs they were talking about. This would in turn boost Rap Genius’s SEO to Googles web crawler. Google doesn’t mess around when it comes to things like this but they gave genius a little slap on the wrist, made them fix some links and two weeks later they were back on top of Google search results.
2014: Coming into 2014, Genius was on top of the world and their business model was nothing if not expansion, so much so that they began neglecting the forums, even removing the link from the homepage during several redesigns.
Furthermore, Moghadam's inappropriate comments on the site added fuel to the fire. 3 hours after the
Isla Vista shooting, Mahbod began annotating Elliot Rodger's manifesto. Adding that Elliot's sister is probably '
Smoking Hot' and calling Elliot's writing "Beautiful". Recognizing the severity of the situation, Moghadam resigned from the company, leaving a void in Rap Genius's leadership.
In the aftermath of Moghadam's departure, Rap Genius underwent a rebranding, dropping "Rap" from its name and reemerging as "Genius." With a renewed focus on annotations across various genres, the company sought to distance itself from the controversies and rebuild its reputation. Alongside the rebranding, Genius raised an impressive $40 million in funding from investors, further fueling its expansion and development.
As part of its growth strategy, Genius launched specialized sections for different types of annotations, such as Fashion Genius, Tech Genius, Screen Genius, History Genius, Sports Genius, Lit Genius, Pop Genius, RNB Genius, Meta Genius, X Genius, and even Law Genius where you can help annotate the
IRS’s 1040.
They were rapidly expanding, but at the cost of the community. Maboo was the defacto community leader, so when he left so did almost any transparency with the company. The forum users were asking for quality of life updates for years, it was still on the basic design platform it had been, and frankly the design of the forums were horrible. With the rise of sites like Kanyetothe and Sectioneighty that had no real backing, and certainty not one of Genius’ size, it made no sense for their site to look
like this. The forum sections were just confusing, a lot of them arbitrary and once you actually got into a thread, you’d have to scroll thru every reply. There was, and still is no page element.
The site design was so bad even
Kanye reached out to Ben Horowitz and offered to redesign the site, but like most Kanye projects it never came to fruition.
2015-2018: In mid-2015, Genius embarked on yet another site redesign, accompanied by the unveiling of a
new logo that would later become synonymous with the brand. However, their decision to move forward with these changes was met with
a wave of overwhelmingly negative feedback from the community. Despite the outcry, Genius chose to disregard the feedback and proceeded to publicize the change anyway.
Around this time, the now two co-founders went on a press run revealing that
they go to couples therapy and completely retconning the narrative surrounding the founding of Genius itself. They revised the story,
claiming that the platform originated from a single conversation between the two founders, effectively erasing the significant contributions of Maboo.
After unsuccessful attempts at expanding into additional sections, Genius also refocused solely on annotating content. They removed all the unnecessary "X-Genius" sections of the site, and released a browser extension called "
News Genius" for annotating third party websites. They also partnered with The Washington Post to
annotate the 2015 presidential debates. However, the extension faced backlash for potential misinformation and cyberbullying promotion, leading to its discontinuation.
With their original aspirations of annotating the world essentially abandoned, Genius sought a new direction - "Original Content". The inspiration for this shift came after
a video featuring Desiigner explaining the meaning behind his lyrics went viral. Genius seized the opportunity to turn their verified annotations feature into an entire video series. Artists were invited to participate, sharing captivating backstories and insights into their songs. This
video series quickly became the flagship program of Genius, establishing a significant presence on YouTube and other social sites. However, Genius faced criticism for neglecting its original site and forum, which had been integral to its early success. Users felt alienated as the company prioritized external platforms like YouTube for content distribution. The site/company continued this way for years reportedly spending every last dollar on video content.
2019-Present: In 2019, Genius made headlines by filing a lawsuit against Google and LyricFind, alleging that they had been stealing lyrics from Genius's website and displaying them in Google's search results. Genius claimed that they had implemented a watermarking system using a unique pattern of apostrophes to catch lyric theft. When Genius discovered that the exact same pattern was appearing in Google's search results, they believed their suspicions were confirmed. While Google denied the allegations and argued that the lyrics were obtained from licensed partners, the controversy shed light on the challenges faced by platforms that rely on user-generated content and the need for stronger safeguards against copyright infringement. The lawsuit would be dismissed after the judge found that Genius' lyric transcriptions were derivative works of artists songs, therefore Genius did not hold the copyright to the lyrics and
could not claim Google's display of them as a copyright violation.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the live music industry to a halt, Genius responded by increasing its focus on digital content, collaborating with artists to produce virtual performances, and hosting online music events. Labeled "
Genius Live" viewers could send money to ask their favorite artists questions during a live QNA and performance.
The funding for project spurred a round of layoffs within the company. One of the employees told
Fine Print NY-
“We were all like, this is a bad idea. No major artist is going to sign up for this, and people aren’t going to want to sit at home and pay $100 to ask Wiz Khalifa, ‘What’s your favorite cereal?’ To the surprise of almost nobody within the company, Genius Live was also a failure.
In mid-2020,
Maboo resurfaced, posting an article to HackerNoon, calling for the resignations of Tom Lehman and Ilan Zechory. Maboo criticized them as "two white guys who have no black friends," accusing them of being mildly racist and lacking passion for hip-hop. Maboo's allegations didn't receive much attention as he was perceived as a disgruntled former employee. However, in the same week, Ilan's wife, Audrey Gelman, had stepped down from a company she co-founded following allegations of
profiling and mistreatment of black and brown employees.
A month after Maboo's article, Ilan himself resigned as the President of Genius, opting to return to his previous occupation in celebrity hypnotherapy. In his place, Genius appointed Miki Toliver King, who became the
first black executive for the company. Despite this change in leadership, Genius was already facing significant challenges, and by September 2021, their financial situation had become dire.
With less than $500,000 remaining from the $79 million they had raised over the years, Tom Lehman conducted an all-staff Zoom meeting to announce that Genius had been sold in a fire sale to holding company MediaLab, for $80 million.
During the announcement, Lehman revealed that the total purchase price was considerably lower than the liquidation preference of preferred shareholders. Consequently, holders of common stock and options would not receive any consideration. As a result, Genius terminated an undisclosed number of employees and rendered their stock options worthless. Shockingly (or not really), while the company faced financial struggles and staff cuts, the executives of Genius walked away with substantial paydays.
Tom Lehman received $13 million, Ilan Zechory received $8 million, four other unnamed executives received multi-million dollar compensation packages, Miki Toliver King had already resigned, Maboo is currently suing the company and the community is dead.
The survival of Genius hinges on its Verified YouTube videos, which remains the only lifeline for the company. Without the Verified program, the company would have faced bankruptcy a long time ago, and MediaLab would not have stepped in to acquire it. Everytime you see
that yellow background it should remind you of just how bad Genius dropped the ball, by trying to expand too fast, neglecting their core userbase, neglecting the core foundation of providing lyrics, and turning their back on their community, a community that doesn’t even exist anymore.
Epilogue: Maboo now runs
helladoge.com, a "web 3 twitter clone".
Former CEO Tom Lehman
now shills NFT's on his social platforms, he was
sued by BoredApeYachtClub earlier this year.

The system was set up outside his Neverland Ranch sleeping quarters to warn of approaching visitors. Bonner said he went to the ranch twice last year, on November 18 and December 4, and found that one of the chimes and the volume control were not working. In a demonstration video prepared by the defense, both sets of chimes are shown to be working, as is the volume control. Prosecutors entered into evidence two checks from Neverland Valley Entertainment made out to Jackson. One was for $500,000, the other for $1 million. Also included were a March 28, 2003 letter signed by Jackson informing a Las Vegas lawyer that he was being fired, and a statement from the accuser's mother saying, "I would never have given consent" to her son's appearance in Living With Michael Jackson For the defense, Melville said he will allow notes written by former Jackson attorney Mark Geragos to be admitted as evidence. The notes are to be delivered to the prosecution Monday, a court holiday. The defense decided to rest without rebuttal after the prosecution played a videotaped interview with the accuser. The police video, which was recorded 7/6/03, by Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department detectives, offered a graphic description of what the accuser says Michael did to him. Melville ordered jurors to watch it solely to assess Gavin's demeanor, manner and attitude, not to determine the truth of the matter. The prosecution contends the tape is compelling because of how long it takes the boy to accuse Jackson of molesting him. Defense attorney Robert Sanger has contended the boy appeared staged and that he was coached by his mother on what to say. After the tape was played, Sanger's team said simply, "Your honor, the defense rests." The defense had been expected to recall Gavin, his mother, a psychologist & an attorney for the family. Instead, the jury will receive its instructions and hear closing arguments before getting the case Court Transcript 2006 - Michael accepted MTV Japan's 'Legend Award' during a ceremony at Yoyogi Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. 2023.05.26 15:19 Gear4Vegito Taking A Look At Potential Reinforcements In The Minors.
Just wanted to make a post highlighting some "alternative" options to struggling players. A lot of talk about having no options but there are a few...
It is unfortunate that our top pitching prospect got hurt after 12.2 IP and our best hitting prospect got injured after 76 AB. Pitchers: Big fill in here is of course for Manoah. If White is healthy this would likely be his spot and if this was later in the year it would likely have been Ryu but for now there are a few other options if sending Manoah down was done.
Starting Pitchers: - Drew Hutchinson: His current season ERA of 5.70 is going to raise some eyebrows but a large part of that comes from 2 disastrous back-to-back starts early in the month. Taking those out he would have 2.80 ERA on the season. Even if you don't look at it that way he has been rocking a high BABIP of .345 and his FIP is a more reasonable 4.29. Looking past his ERA he has struggled with his control but hasn't allowed too much hard contact and is striking out batters very effectively. Has been a very decent MLB pitcher for DET over the previous two seasons as a fill-in option. 2022 Drew would actually be an upgrade over Manoah and Kikuchi if we get that.
- Bowden Francis: Former rising prospect who fell off the map last season but has slowly risen back up. Started the year injured but has come back continuing with his strong trends from end of last season - Fall League - Spring Training. He also pitched yesterday meaning he can slide right in on Manoah days. He has a 1.93 ERA through 14.0 IP but really stands out with his 22 SO to just 3 BB. Although he does have some HR issues allowing 3 already. There are scouts who still see a very viable Major League pitcher from him. He has very good stuff. He went 4 IP last time out so might need another start to be stretched out enough.
- Trevor Richards + Thomas Hatch: Trevor Richards has had a fantastic season thus far. His 3.86 ERA is even better when you consider that he has allowed 6 of his 9 runs in 2 outings. Outside of that he has top of league numbers as a relief pitcher. He can give you 1 time through the lineup. Hatch has had his up downs this season in AAA but as we saw in his preview this week he has good stuff and his strikeouts are way up. Both pitchers have a tendencies to get themselves into trouble they cannot get out of but on short leashes and the expectations of only going through a lineup once they can probably do better than Manoah. Could even sandwich another reliever in-between them if the top of the order is up. Yosver Zulueta is another option here as has looked a lot better after a rough start to the season. The strikeouts are up and has only allowed 3 ER over his last 12.0 IP. Another 1 time through the lineup pitcher at the moment though.
Honourable Mention:
- Adam Kloffenstein: Dude has arguably been the best pitcher in the Eastern League and one of the better ones in all of AA. Impressing more than several league wide top prospects. He owns a sparkly 2.20 ERA which ranks 4th, 41.0 IP ranks 2nd, 51 SO ranks 2nd, WHIP of 1.15 ranks 8th, BAA of .205 ranks 5th, etc. What is even more exciting about Kloff? He was a disaster his first start...since then he has not allowed more than 1 ER in 7 straight games for a league best 1.46 ERA. Going deep in games as well as he has gone at least 5 IP in 6 straight including 3 QS in between. This is looking like a legit breakout with just a .289 BABIP and a FIP/xFIP of 3.14/3.15 still being impressive. He is still only 22 for a few more months. I don't see the Blue Jays fast tracking him but he isn't as far away as once seemed.
Hitters: Biggest replacements here is an upgrade over the bench. Biggio & Espinal haven't done much and Lukes & Clement haven't earned playing time as of yet. Otto Lopez would likely have been a lock by now but had a historically bad slow start to the season which he has just started waking up from: he is now 9-for-19 w/ 3 BB in the last week. - RHH Rafael Lantigue (Age 25 - 2B/3B/SS/OF): .333/.466/.532 with an OPS of .998 in 126 AB // Been a Top 10 player in the entire International League. Showing exceptional contact ability and an even better ability to draw walks. A mostly unranked prospect with a minor league career OPS of .769 but prospects have bloomed late before. Solid defence, solid speed and can play 5 different positions. No clue if he is the real deal but he should be forcing at least a chance at his point. Even a massive decline from his current numbers make him good enough for the bench.
- LHH Spencer Horwitz (Age 25 - 1B/OF): .326/.454/.431 with an OPS of .885 in 144 AB // His main-issue is he severely lacks the power needed to play 1B or corner OF but everything else about his bat profiles well for the Majors. If he played 2B he would likely have been called up by now. He has played 1 game at 2B although there seems to be no indication of that continuing. He is 4th in the International League in OBP. He has earned a promotion in 3 straight seasons and is likely on the verge of doing that for the 4th straight year. He is out 18th ranked prospect.
- RHH Davis Schneider (Age 24 - 2B/3B/OF): .250/.377/.515 with an OPS of .892 in 132 AB // A very underrated prospect in the Jays system for a while now. Doesn't get the hype mostly due to being one of those prospects that are "good at everything but great at nothing". He makes good contact, has good power, good defence, good speed, good arm and a good eye at the plate but none of the skills stand out. He has gotten better every year in the minors OPS: .726 .793 .812 .823 .892 as well shows he is developing and isn't a full fluke. He is still relative young as well just being 24. He is our 28th ranked prospect.
Honourable Mention:
- Cam Eden. Doesn't bring much in terms of the bat but does have 18 SB vs. 1 CS so he might be a great spark plug pitch-runner for guys like Kirk and Belt late in the game. Meh bat so would end up being more of a Zimmer but the Jays don't really use 2/4 bench spots anyways. The Blue Jays are much improved running wise but all their best runners are starters and Eden is much faster and better than our current bench options for running.
Most of the players above do not have a spot on the 40-Man Roster so that might make things a little tricky. There are a few viable names: Jay Jackson, Trent Thornton & Zach Thompson that prop up. Thompson and Jackson have not been great in AAA and Thornton has been his normal average self but likely been jumped by several on the depth chart or will soon be. White, Greene & Rye need eventual 60-Man spots as well but that's a problem for later. submitted by

2023.05.23 01:24 its_vf Fremantle Dockers: Jye Amiss on track to follow Matthew Pavlich and win club goalkicking award in second season
Rising Star or not, there’s a special place in history on offer for young Dockers spearhead Jye Amiss, writes ELIZA REILLY.
https://www.codesports.com.au/afl/fremantle/fremantle-dockers-jye-amiss-on-track-to-follow-matthew-pavlich-and-win-club-goalkicking-award-in-second-season/news-story/9118cccd142df7a8dc005f3c29d26808 Some commentators carefully consider what headlines they’ll create before taking a stance.
Paul Hasleby, by contrast, believes the opinions he forms.
Still, only the most optimistic Walyalup supporter would’ve taken note of Hasleby’s pre-season prediction for emerging Dockers key forward Jye Amiss.
The four-time Glendinning medallist predicted Amiss, in just his second season, would kick 40 goals.
“We talk about this kid like he’s been around for a long time, but in reality, he hasn’t played much footy,” Haselby said in February. “Two or three games last year, he came in for the finals. We know what he did in that first finals. He was brilliant.
“Another pre-season, better ball movement expected by the Fremantle Dockers, a few more options in and around him to take some pressure off.”
It was bold on two accounts.
To begin with, no Docker kicked that many in 2022 when Walyalup returned to finals. Rory Lobb came closest with a tally of 36 before packing his bags for the Western Bulldogs. Lobb was 29, had eight seasons of AFL football under his belt and was the Dockers’ primary target when he kicked his career-high haul.
It was also brave because Amiss had yet to cement a spot in Walyalup’s best 22.
Despite being parachuted into Fremantle’s finals campaign last year, Josh Treacy had overtaken Amiss in the pecking order after a strong pre-season. The Dockers also had to squeeze Matt Taberner, Luke Jackson and Nat Fyfe into their attack.
A sudden oversupply of talls meant Amiss was the one to miss out in round one, punching an early hole in Haselby’s prophecy. But his absence would only last one week.
Brought back into the team in round two in place of Fyfe (injured) and Treacy (omitted), Amiss didn’t set the world alight against North Melbourne. With Walyalup’s midfield-forward connection failing to ignite, the 19 year-old finished with just three disposals and no scoreboard impact.
In the eight games since, Amiss has stamped himself as a star of the now. Not only has he kicked at least a-goal-a-match, he has bagged a trio of three goal games, including Saturday’s treble against Geelong.
Now up to 16 goals, Amiss is an equal leader of Walyalup’s goalkicking alongside Lachie Schultz and Michael Walters and he has kicked more goals than any other of the Rising Star nominees to date.
And if he continues at this rate, 40 goals is suddenly within reach.
With 16 majors in nine games, Amiss is currently sitting on a goals-per-game average of 1.8. That trajectory puts him on track to kick 39 goals with 13 rounds left to play this season.
The last Docker to kick 40 or more goals in a season was Michael Walters in 2019. And in the past decade, there have only been three years a Fremantle player has reached that mark.
The key for Amiss might just be his accuracy. The East Perth product‘s pinpoint approach became apparent in his final year of colts football at the Royals, kicking 51.15 at a 77 per cent accuracy rate.
Against hardened AFL defenders each week, Amiss might not get the same level of opportunities in front of goal but his ability to make them count will play a big part in the pursuit of 40.
Amiss’ goalkicking technique is so renowned he has even offered advice to former skipper Fyfe, who has notoriously struggled in front of the big sticks.
Amiss might have missed out on an AFL Rising Star nomination this week in favour of Hawthorn’s Josh Weddle, but there’s no doubting his importance internally – as much as a campaign is mounting out west.
“(A nomination) would have to be coming,” teammate Jordan Clark said. “He’s an unflappable character, even if he doesn’t get one it won’t bother him at all. I think he’s due! It would be good to see him get one.”
Each of Amiss’ three goals against the Cats drew upon a different skillset. The first was a powerful contested mark as Geelong defenders Jed Bews and Jake Kolodjashnji cannoned into him. The second was a delightful read of the ball as it dropped out the back of the pack, Amiss stepping inside and into traffic before hooking it home off the left. And the third was a drop punt from outside 50. It’s a key forward tool kit that’s already setting him apart from some of the game‘s generational spearheads.
At that rate of 1.8 goals a game, Amiss is already ahead of modern power forwards Charlie Curnow (0.95), Joe Daniher (1.3), Tom Hawkins (1.3), Josh Kennedy (0.5), Ben King (1.5) and Aaron Naughton (1.4) at the same point in their careers.
Jeremy Cameron (2.95), Jack Darling (2.2) and Lance Franklin (2.2) are the benchmark.
Walyalup knew exactly what they were getting when they drafted Amiss with pick eight in the 2021 AFL draft, its first top 10 key forward since Matthew Pavlich. With time, Amiss will fill those long empty boots.
But what a feather in the cap it would be to match the achievements of Dockers’ doyen and win the club’s goalkicking award in just his second season. Pavlich did it in 2001 and the door is open for Amiss to follow suit more than two decades later.
“I thought I competed well,” a modest Amiss said after helping down Geelong. “I just want to keep building and learning and trying new stuff each week. You want to build consistency and a good connection with everyone else in the forward group. The last couple of weeks, we’re really starting to gel.”

2023.05.22 03:43 Rfowl009 Spring 2024 Oscar Predictions (19 Categories + Commentary)
- BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR - AIR Amazon Studios; Ben Affleck, Matt Damon & David Ellison, Producers
• Yes: Critically well-received crowdpleaser that hits the pop culture sweet spot. Affleck and Damon’s Artist Equity venture has gotten plaudits and may resonate even more after a year destined to be defined by guild strikes.
• No: It’s an early spring release. Will it be forgotten months later amid a glut of new and shinier objects? It’s box office performance has generally been hailed as solid, but Amazon acquired it for a hefty price-tag. Will it be viewed as a wasteful investment in hindsight?
• Maybe So: In a field of 10 nominees, a slighter picture like this can comfortably coast into inclusion by virtue of being broadly appealing. It doesn’t need to rack up many nominations elsewhere to still be a contender.
THE COLOR PURPLE Warner Bros.; Quincy Jones, Steven Spielberg & Oprah Winfrey, Producers
• Yes: A musical with heft and sociopolitical resonance. The stage production already has a rich history of accolades, and this adaptation is backed by an all-star producer team. Could benefit from a reclamation narrative decades after Spielberg’s rendition was completely shut out of Oscar wins.
• No: Even if it’s reconfigured as a musical, we’ve already seen this story in cinematic form. Could the same systemic biases that muted the 1985 film’s reception resurface this time around? Musicals have a mixed record with the modern Academy, and this one is directed by someone who cut their teeth in music videos. Could it wind up too glossy for its own good?
• Maybe So: If Barbie becomes a serious contender, it’ll be tough for Warner Bros. to juggle campaigns for both films along with Dune.
DUNE: PART TWO Warner Bros.; Tanya Lapointe, Patrick McCormick & Denis Villeneuve
• Yes: The first installment was richly rewarded with Oscars while being a much tougher sell. Villeneuve was able to win over audiences with what was ostensibly just setup, and this will be all payoff. If it's rousing enough it could even be in the hunt for the win.
• No: Part One loomed large in a year with far fewer epics to compete with. It also existed in a very different box-office environment; Part Two will face much steeper financial expectations. Can it meet them?
• Maybe So: Let’s not kid ourselves. Dune: Part Two’s nomination is the closest thing we have to a lock this year. It’s Muad’Dib time.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures; Dan Friedkin, Daniel Lupi & Martin Scorsese, Producers
• Yes: This is about as good as it gets on paper. Saint Scorsese directing a western epic with his two most quintessential stars paired together for the first time in decades. And it won’t lack for sociopolitical relevance.
• No: It was last year's presumptive frontrunner and this year's as well. Those kind of expectations have sunk many a good film for the crime of not being a masterpiece. That runtime will also be a daunting barrier to entry for some.
• Maybe So: So much of the talent involved have already been so richly rewarded that the package might not be viewed as the sexiest option — even if it fully lives up to everyone’s lofty expectations.
MAESTRO Netflix; Bradley Cooper, Martin Scorsese & Steven Spielberg, Producers
• Yes: A portrait of a tortured genius and a prime opportunity for some Capital A acting. Cooper delivered the goods with a Star is Born, and having Leonard Bernstein's oeuvre as your soundtrack is a pretty great secret weapon.
• No: Will this be so transparently baity that it turns people off? Portraits of troubled geniuses aren’t as hot as they used to be. The biggest worry of all: did Lydia Tár, Bernstein's greatest pupil, steal his thunder by getting there first?
• Maybe So: A Star is Born was a hit in every sense of the word and still received a muted reception from the Academy that bordered on begrudging. Will Cooper course correct and play the campaign circuit more strategically this time?
MAY DECEMBER TBD; Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell & Grant S. Johnson, Producers
• Yes: Strong notices coming out of Cannes, and this team has an impressive pedigree. A confirmed strong acting showcase, and its provocative premise will surely drum up a lot of attention in the months to come.
• No: Haynes’ return to sardonic camp will be welcomed with open arms by his fans, but will it be too icy and disquieting to gain much traction beyond performances?
• Maybe So: For such a starry film, it’s yet to secure distributor. This was reportedly a strategic decision by the producers to up the sales price, which may pay off with a glitzy acquisition. If distributors like Focus Features or Searchlight, awards mainstays who have softer slates than usual this year, snatch this up on the Croisette, it could become their primary racehorse.
OPPENHEIMER Universal Pictures; Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven & Emma Thomas
• Yes: An historical drama with all the grandiosity and pyrotechnics of a blockbuster. The last time Nolan worked in this key (Dunkirk) was a resounding success.
• No: It’s vulnerable to accusations of glorifying the atomic bomb (even if it resolutely doesn’t). Might prove more respected than genuinely liked. What if Barbie eats its lunch at the box-office?
• Maybe So: Everything about this film’s rollout, from the marketing to cast and crew interviews, has been supremely confident.
PAST LIVES A24; David Hinojosa, Pamela Koffler & Christine Vachon
• Yes: It wasn't just the best reviewed film out of Sundance — it's gotten the sort of praise that is usually reserved for the best of the year. It could prove omnipresent in the critics awards come year’s end.
• No: It's a small-scale film releasing in the first half of the year. We've had our hearts broken before by festival darlings that did everything right but still came up short once the Academy got its hands on a slew of shinier objects.
• Maybe So: It has a savvy backer in A24, which is riding high after its record-breaking showing at the most recent Oscars.
SALTBURN Amazon Studios & MGM; Emerald Fennell, Josey McNamara & Margot Robbie, Producers
• Yes: Emerald Fennell is hot off an Oscar win and garnered a lot of fans with Promising Young Woman's caustic social commentary. This is purported to be a sardonic thriller in the vein of Patricia Highsmith. The BAFTA crowd might eat it up.
• No: Fennell’s debut film also had passionate detractors who will have their knives sharpened this time. Sophomore features are all the trickier when you have vocal skeptics.
• Maybe So: Amazon Studios have had a pretty anemic record in this category – Fennel’s involvement is more of a guarantor for the nomination than they are.
THE ZONE OF INTEREST A24; Ewa Puszczynska & James Wilson
• Yes: This was going to be La chimera before Zone of Interest’s reviews streamed in. Glazer has reportedly made a masterful and chilling treatise on the banality of evil. Easily in the hunt for the Palme d’Or, and there’s usually room for the big Cannes breakout.
• No: It also is entirely centered on the perpetrators of the Holocaust. What connects with critics on the Croisette may be too formalist and upsetting for the average Academy voter.
• Maybe So: There’s been a recurring pattern of an international film cracking the Big 10 lately. There’s an entire global marketplace of competition, but this is currently top dog.
In the Mix: Asteroid City (Focus Features) Barbie (Warner Bros.) The Bikeriders (20th Century Studios) Challengers (MGM & United Artists) The Holdovers (Focus Features) La chimera (NEON) How Do You Live? (GKIDS) Napoleon (Apple Studios & Sony Pictures Entertainment) Poor Things (Searchlight Pictures) Rustin (Netflix)
- BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING - DUNE: PART TWO Denis Villeneuve (Warner Bros.)
• Yes: He pulled off a miracle by successfully adapting what was thought to be an unadaptable literary masterwork… and he was snubbed for his trouble. The second half of this story will be more action-oriented and conventionally satisfying, providing a good chance to make it up to him.
• No: Unless his snub for Part One was more pointed, and there's a hard ceiling on how much the Academy appreciates his vision. Science-fiction mostly goes unappreciated in this branch.
• Maybe So: If they announce an adaptation of Dune Messiah this year, maybe the Academy will punt the ball on recognizing him yet again for when he finishes the trilogy.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Martin Scorsese (Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures)
• Yes: Cinema’s finally opened up to Marty, but he’s run out of time. He is arguably the most beloved living director and he’s in his twilight era. And, as early looks go, he has the goods yet again.
• No: The movie was crazy expensive, which might raise eyebrows, and maybe he's calcified into the sort of elder statesmen where people feel he doesn't need any more validation.
• Maybe So: His nomination is the closest thing this category has to a lock. The only question is whether he’s genuinely in the hunt for another win.
OPPENHEIMER Christopher Nolan (Universal Pictures)
• Yes: Household name devoting all his wizardry to a biopic with tremendous scope. He's marrying an intimate character study with state of the art pyrotechnic feats. The scale is going to be off the charts, and this is the kind of mature material that makes him harder to dismiss.
• No: He's only been nominated once before, and it took a great big war epic to manage it. He also broke up with Warner Bros in a very public and dramatic fashion -- are there any hard feelings in the industry?
• Maybe So: If Oppenheimer rakes in beaucoup bucks, Nolan could be doubly heralded for making a movie for adults a blockbuster event.
PAST LIVES Celine Song (A24)
• Yes: Rapturous praise out of Sundance -- the kind of reviews that can sustain your buzz all year. Bringing personal flourishes to a universally relatable story is a good hook, and there's solid precedent for a festival darling cracking this field.
• No: She's not just an up-and-comer -- this is her first film, period. That distinction can benefit somebody like Kevin Costner or Robert Redford, but the branch might flinch at welcoming in somebody so unknown to them.
• Maybe So: Her movie's gotten the kind of acclaim that could outlast most competitors. If she's still the critical darling by the end of the year, she'll be in a solid position.
THE ZONE OF INTEREST Jonathan Glazer (A24)
• Yes: A critically respected auteur hits a vein with an audacious portrayal of historical evil that feels relevant to modern tensions. He has the adventurous spirit and the formal rigor that this branch respects.
• No: How beloved is he, really? His previous films have fervent fans but were largely niche. His latest work is paradoxically more Academy friendly, but will it be too alienating to maintain awards traction?
• Maybe So: He could pull off a nod here even if his film proves too limited in appeal to break into the Big 10.
In the Mix: La chimera Alice Rohrwacher (NEON) The Color Purple Blitz Bazawule (Warner Bros.) How Do You Live? Hayao Miyazaki (GKIDS) Maestro Bradley Cooper (Netflix) Saltburn Emerald Fennell (Amazon Studios & MGM)
- BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE - THE ACTOR André Holland (NEON)
• Yes: This is very much a NGNG swing, but the track's laid for the little acting nod that could. This role was plum enough that Ryan Gosling originally snagged it. Paired with a smart distributor like NEON, Holland could be one of the season's biggest surprises.
• No: Duke Johnson has only ever directed stop-motion animation before. How weird is this going to be? Are we gonna get a trailer and discover that the whole thing -- surprise! -- is done with puppets or something?
• Maybe So: Holland's been terrific for a long time. Feels like an actor just waiting for the right role to break into the club.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Leonardo DiCaprio (Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures)
• Yes: He’s Leo, back together again with Scorsese. Can you believe it’s already been 10 years since their last movie together?
• No: He’s been celebrated to the point where he needs to show whole new facets of his range to avoid being taken for granted. If you want to get numerical about it: his five previous collaborations with Scorsese only yielded two nominations for himself. Even if he’s arguably the biggest star in the world, his awards recognition is never a given.
• Maybe So: The initial reviews should lay to rest any quibbling about his chances. Not only has he been breathlessly praised, but several notices have called this his best work yet. He’s going to be in the hunt for his second trophy.
MAESTRO Bradley Cooper (Netflix)
• Yes: He's already proven to be his own best director and he's throwing everything but the kitchen sink at this one. Creative genius, repressed sexuality, transformative old age makeup.
• No: The Academy was fairly rude to him for A Star Is Born, which was chalked up to him 'wanting it too much.' Playing Leonard Bernstein is wanting it a helluva lot more blatantly than playing Jackson Maine. Are they just not that into him?
• Maybe So: The movie would have to be a pretty underwhelming flop for him not to be a strong contender here. He's the presumptive frontrunner; if he lands the plane, he could very well steamroll the competition.
OPPENHEIMER Cillian Murphy (Universal Pictures)
• Yes: J. Robert Oppenheimer is a hugely consequential figure swathed in complexity. The movie is emphasizing his historical importance -- "The Man Who Moved the Earth" -- and promises to be very much about him and not just his creation. Murphy's a high-profile pro who has never really had his awards shot, give or take a Breakfast on Pluto.
• No: The picture's a big pyrotechnic epic full of sturm and drang. Having to share star status with Christopher Nolan, will there be enough attention left over for the actors?
• Maybe So: Nolan and Murphy have emphasized their collaboration in the press rollout. Are they positioning themselves as a package deal?
SALTBURN Barry Keoghan (Amazon Studios & MGM)
• Yes: His career has a full head of steam after The Banshees of Inisherin got him into the awards club. He’s purportedly the lead playing a character reminiscent of Tom Ripley. He gives good unnerving freak; this could be an organic leveling up for him as a new star.
• No: Conniving and alienating characters can be a tough sell in this category. Perhaps a little bit of Keoghan goes a long way with Academy voters; do they prefer him as a garnish rather than the main course? He’s also still fairly young for this category.
• Maybe So: He’s got a lot of big projects in the pipeline. A sense of momentum helps.
In the Mix: Bob Marley: One Love Kingsley Ben-Adir (Paramount Pictures) The Holdovers Paul Giamatti (Focus Features) A Little Prayer David Strathairn (Sony Pictures Classics) Napoleon Joaquin Phoenix (Apple Studios & Sony Pictures Entertainment) Rustin Colman Domingo (Netflix)
- BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE - THE COLOR PURPLE Fantasia Barrino (Warner Bros.) •
Yes: She originated this role on the stage and the character is a plum portrait of resilience and self-actualization. Plenty of ballads to chew on, and it bears mentioning that Barrino has already triumphed in a singing contest. •
No: She may have originated the role on stage, but Cynthia Erivo put an indelible stamp on it with the revival. Will Barrino be able to reclaim the role, or will there be grumbles that Erivo would’ve been preferable casting? Meanwhile, Barrino’s caught flack before for conservative opinions. Is she a potential gaffe machine on the campaign trail? •
Maybe So: She wouldn’t be the first contestant from America Idol’s third season to go on and win an Oscar.
MAY DECEMBER Natalie Portman (TBD)
• Yes: Portman will lay dormant for several years at a time before springing up to remind everyone of her formidability. Initial reviews have been ecstatic about her performance as an actor who takes their method to disconcerting extremes. She reportedly shows a new facet of her range.
• No: This category is shaping up to be competitive, and mannered camp might suffer in comparison to other contenders’ straightforward histrionics.
• Maybe So: Moore will also be a player this season, and co-stars both in the running tend to bolster each others’ positioning.
NYAD Annette Bening (Netflix)
• Yes: Bening's been overdue for so long that most have given up hope, but here she's playing a record-setting inspirational figure in a highly physical role. Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi have been absolutely blockbuster documentary filmmakers and deserve some benefit of the doubt in their fictional debut.
• No: There's a modicum of controversy over the real Diana Nyad's records, which would undercut the picture with messy discourse. Documentarians transitioning into fiction filmmaking might yield mixed results. And Bening's been ignored for great work before.
• Maybe So: It'd be nice to have an older actress in a star vehicle for this category.
PAST LIVES Greta Lee (Searchlight Pictures)
• Yes: Her movie's been praised to high heaven, and she's been singled out as an integral ingredient. Everyone who's seen the picture loves her performance.
• No: She's not a star; up until now she's just been a (delightful) supporting player on television. When stacked up against more famous faces, will she be drowned out?
• Maybe So: If the film endures throughout the awards race, it's hard to see it being recognized without her along for the ride.
POOR THINGS Emma Stone (Searchlight Pictures)
• Yes: For such a huge star, Stone's kept a pretty low profile since her last Lanthimos collaboration, aside from emerging to cash a Cruella paycheck. That's a five year absence from serious roles, but she's coming back with a vengeance in this gonzo role: a drowned woman who is resuscitated with the brain of an infant. The opportunities for physical and verbal comedy are endless, and The Favourite proved that Yorgos brings out the best in her. •
No: The role is absolutely bizarre on paper and might be too broad and off-putting for establishment tastes.
º Maybe So: I don't know, I think it sounds so crazy that it just might work. She'll sure as shit stand out from the crowd.
In the Mix: Barbie Margot Robbie (Warner Bros.) Challengers Zendaya (MGM & United Artists) Killers of the Flower Moon Lily Gladstone (Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures) Maestro Carey Mulligan (Netflix) Anatomy of a Fall / The Zone of Interest Sandra Hüller (A24 / TBD)
- BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - THE COLOR PURPLE Colman Domingo (Warner Bros.)
• Yes: A hard-working character actor who's been giving way more than he gets (this dude is still plugging away on Fear the Walking Dead) finally gets his big moment on film. Having Rustin — however that turns out — premiere in the same season can only bolster his spotlight.
• No: Danny Glover was snubbed for the same role nearly 40 years ago; is this going to strictly be the ladies’ show? Mister is a deeply unlikable character; maybe playing someone this off-putting is a thankless task.
• Maybe So: He’ll have a solo song or two that will give him the chance to bring the house down.
THE IRON CLAW Holt McCallany (A24)
• Yes: This is a total NGNG hunch, hinging on The Iron Claw being a well-liked-but-small film where all the goodwill pools around McCallany playing the Von Erich patriarch. He's the sort of actor this category has a history of elevating.
• No: Or maybe there's no "there" there, and the role just doesn't pop. Could have strong internal competition from co-stars like Jeremy Allen White. And even if the movie connects, McCallany's primarily from TV; would they hold that against him?
• Maybe So: A24's pretty good at wringing acting nominations from their smaller awards vehicles. If McCallany's memorable in the movie, they might deem him a do-able pickup and make a concerted campaign push.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Robert De Niro (Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures) •
Yes: He’s reportedly back in top form as the sociopathic patriarch who waged a stealth genocide against the Osage tribe. Reviews have praised him mightily, with several calling it his best work in decades. •
No: They were rude enough to snub him for his last reunion with Marty. Maybe the decades of paycheck roles have truly eroded his stock amongst voters? •
Maybe So: He’s Robert fuckin’ De Niro, and he’s gotten up there in years. How many more opportunities will there honestly be to recognize him? “Three-time Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro” sounds just.
OPPENHEIMER Robert Downey Jr. (Universal Pictures) •
Yes: It's been a long time since Downey played in this kind of sandbox. The Academy might be waiting for the first excuse to give him the damn trophy, let alone a win. •
No: The movie will cover a lot of ground. Is Downey even going to be in it much? With an ensemble that huge, we could be looking at a series of extended cameos instead of juicy supporting roles. •
Maybe So: If Nolan lets Downey cook a little bit, this could be a no-brainer. And if he brings some sorely needed levity to such an intense movie, watch out.
PAST LIVES John Magaro (A24)
• Yes: Reviews have singled out his warm contribution to the film, his character proving so endearing that it greatly complicates audience sympathies with the central romance. It helps to be a part of what might just be the most critically acclaimed movie of the year.
• No: As richly deserved Magaro’s awards breakout would be, he’s not exceedingly well-known. In a category usually reserved for scene stealers, is there room for a performance that is mild and sweet?
• Maybe So: He’s accumulated a nice reputation as an Indie muse. First Cow was completely ignored in an uncompetitive year, but maybe enough voters will fondly remember Magaro’s gentle starring performance in that picture to give him some residual goodwill.
In the Mix: Barbie Ryan Gosling (Warner Bros.) BlackBerry Glenn Howerton (IFC Films) Killers of the Flower Moon Jesse Plemons (Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures) May December Charles Melton (TBD) Poor Things Willem Dafoe or Mark Ruffalo (Searchlight Pictures)
- BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - AIR Viola Davis (Amazon Studios)
• Yes: She was the standout in a well-liked movie, and Affleck has told anyone who will listen about how Michael Jordan himself requested her casting.
• No: The movie arrived early and there will be newer and shinier objects in the months to come. There may also emerge a sentiment that Davis could’ve done this role in her sleep.
• Maybe So: Davis is one of the most respected actors currently working and many felt she was snubbed last season for The Woman King. This nod could be an easy way for voters to make amends.
THE COLOR PURPLE Danielle Brooks (Warner Bros.)
• Yes: She already garnered a Tony nomination for her rendition of Sofia, the brassiest and most charismatic character in the whole ensemble. She could steal the whole show.
• No: Oprah Winfrey already put a pretty indelible stamp on this character in the popular imagination. Will Brooks’ reception suffer from comparisons? She’s also primarily known as a television actor — can she graduate to movie stardom?
• Maybe So: I think this really depends on whether The Color Purple has the juice to rack up acting nods across the board or whether its capped at one or two.
THE COLOR PURPLE Taraji P. Henson (Warner Bros.)
• Yes: Henson's the most famous of the ensemble and playing the (presumably beefed up) role of Shug. Even if the film underwhelms, she could be its standard bearer in the acting awards.
• No: Internal competition with Danielle Brooks. Henson can sing, but will her Broadway-caliber costars outshine her?
• Maybe So: Henson's popular and respected enough that she feels primed for becoming a regular at the Academy, roles willing.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Lily Gladstone (Apple Studios & Paramount Pictures)
• Yes: The adaptation was refocused onto DiCaprio’s conman, and by extension Gladstone will be front and center throughout. She is the most sympathetic character in the saga and a fresh face with a great campaign narrative (she was preparing to quit acting when she was contacted by Scorsese). Reviews out of Cannes have given her rapturous praise.
• No: Will she go Leading instead? This feels like it'll draw accusations of category fraud wherever she's slotted. After Michelle Williams’ lead push last season, Gladstone and her team might feel bullish about her positioning.
• Maybe So: There was already a narrative brewing about how her cultural insight greatly informed Scorsese’s approach to the material. Her nomination — and potential victory — would be a watershed moment for Indigenous representation in Hollywood. She’s going to be competitive for the win regardless of whichever category she winds up in.
MAY DECEMBER Julianne Moore (TBD)
• Yes: Reunited with her signature director and reportedly turning out highly memorable work as a highly problematic woman blessed with a vacant conscience. Moore was a regular nominee until her eventual win; maybe it’s high time to re-up her presence at the Oscars.
• No: The character might prove too icky for some. She’s been passed over for scorcher performances before.
• Maybe So: There’s a plum narrative about Moore and Haynes’ collaborative relationship over the last 30 years that keeps her firmly in the conversation.
In the Mix: Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret Rachel McAdams (Lionsgate) Barbie America Ferrara (Warner Bros.) The Holdovers Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Focus Features) Napoleon Vanessa Kirby (Apple Studios & Sony Pictures Entertainment) Saltburn Rosamund Pike (Amazon Studios & MGM)

2023.05.20 20:14 Unlucky-Hour4044 Corcoran 1500 Jump Boots sizing
Thought I would post this for posterity.
The info people give when sizing boots and shoes generally never ceases to amaze me (read: disappoint). And who the hell knows their Brannock size.
"I am usually a this, or that," true to size, etc. means NOTHING. Not in the slightest bit helpful.
My actual foot length measured wearing the socks I intend to wear ( a common cotton athletic) is a solid 11 inches. I am a standard Wide preferrably, though I have tolerated N widths all my life. 4.5in width standing measurement with weight on foot. Less of course with foot raised.
We need mid foot support even with wide feet. I have always been disappointed with leathers which are too soft, like suedes, therefore. Corcorans have outstanding, sturdy supportive mid foot support.
As example, I have tried both leather and suede Allen Edmonds Normandy boots and both have no support and just ....blech... My foot felt like it was a water balloon. Like I was wearing sock. I didn't like it despite wanting to really like those boots.
So, size 1/2 down your actual foot length measurement. With an 11inch length and 4.5 width, 10.5E is PERFECT, leaving about precisely a thumbs width space free at toe and perfect width.
This is without an insole however. I always add insoles. Military boots always run large as they expect you to install your own insoles and allow thick socks.
Recent tendonitis and heel issues have completey awoken me to the importance of our feet which we take so for granted. Man, when you can't stand or walk...for weeks....it will change everything.
Always worn out your shoe outer heels? You have a supination problem. Inner, pronation.
Address it, NOW...
I have walked the world over, literally. Sudden heel pain also bizarrely has made itself apparent.
Use quality corrective insoles. Take the time to find. Make the effort. 40 happens. 50 happens...You will develop knee and back issues otherwise in later life.
3/4 insoles on these work well. Having purchased several, I have found these best and most reasonable. Depends on what you want and need.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BHYV25VB?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BRTPRJ49?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I also have a touch of Haglund's Deformity I have suddenly learned. These boots are great as they are all leather. No plastic heel counters. No liners to wear out.
However, hard leather rubbing on heel over years (especially due to incorrect sizing choices) will create the issue..and it will ruin your life.
I recommend installing leather adhesive pads at heels. They too can be found on Amazon.
Vis a vis, these boots are a brick shithouse and a blank canvas to create perfectly your own shoe for YOUR foot type.
Measure standing on a piece of paper with intended sock to be worn.
Use a pen straight vertically and create outline of foot. Measure the marks on paper.
Measure length this way.
I wear and recommend only the VINTAGE Corcorans with the Red Lettered Labels.
The new Carolina conglomerate made Boots I don't recommend. fwiw
Originally the company was based in Stoughton, Mass. Started by Jooseph Corcoran.
Then moved to Martinsburg, Pennsylvania.
Then bought out sometime in the 80s by Cove, an historic military boot brand from WW2 days, when they changed the label to a Grey lettering.
Then Cove was bought out by Intl. Shoe Company (also once a very well regarded military boot brand from WW2 days).
Then all became combined at some point. Congolmerate name changed to something banal and meaningless. Can't remember anymore.
Then Corcoran bought out by same conglomerate as Carolina Brand which is where they are now.
So all of those historic companies are gone now and all under one roof.
Quality gone down significantly under Carolina.. That black with red checkered labeling now..
All owned by some Chinese company now I believe.
I may be off a bit but I cannot remember this stuff anymore.
But the Red Label Corcorans are the ones to get. Can be found online. Never ceases to amaze what can be found online these days.
Vintage Corcoran boots are Red Wing killers. Fraction of price. Also if you want a taller boot RW does not offer.
Originally oiled internally using neatsfoot oil to soften leather. Can be found on Amazon very inexpensively. Heat it up first within microwave for better penetration.
Used internally as nothing will penetrate that external paint.
One needs to remove that black paint using alcohol or acetone and re-dye using angelus leather dye and then nourish using your goops.
I purchased 2 pair. One redone in black, the other in Cordovan.
Others have documented the process online. Do a search.
Just thought this info might be helpful to someone.
