They built a new life near Charlotte after Jan. 6. Now, husband, wife are going to prison.
"Now, Shalvey and Stottlemyer, both 38, are set to become the ninth and 10th North Carolinians imprisoned for Jan. 6 crimes, for terms ranging from nine days to 44 months. At least 28 N.C. residents have been federally charged."
As physically beautiful as NC and much of the South is, nice as most of the people are, I find more reasons not to be part of the Great Return. Hateful politics and QAnon crazies are 1 and 2 in the list. Of course, TX and FL win that fight.

2023.05.28 07:04 Fictionarious Quick overview of the ProRights position (and of its compatibility with Reddit's content policy)

Today (well, a few days ago, anyway) marks the second time that polite explanation/defense of the ProRights position on reproductive rights (abortion necessarily included, of course) has been maliciously reported by "pro-choice" users and subsequently censored by mods over on abortiondebate (this time with the assistance of some Reddit admin or another, evidently not doing their due diligence in reviewing the position, any statement I have ever made pertaining to it, and/or Reddit's own policies). In honor of this occasion, it may be warranted to provide a brief restatement of the position, review its general compatibility with Reddit terms of service, and observe its obvious relevance to the aforementioned debate in any (unbiased or free) public forum.

What are the motivations for and intended consequences of the ProRights position?

As ProRights advocates, we believe that nobody should be forced to become/remain a parent to any child (in any capacity) against their present will. They should not be forced into parenthood by the government. They should not be forced into parenthood by their partner. They should not be forced into parenthood by some act of conspiracy between the two. Likewise and therefore, there is no basis for forcing them to undergo or remain in any of the biological processes that typically or necessarily precede parenthood (coitus, impregnation, gestation, or delivery). The compulsion of the initiation or of the perpetuation of any of these conditions/events, either by force or by fraud, is categorically a moral wrong, and the best-of-all-possible-societies are those that adopt reasonable and effective policies specifically to discourage and prevent the occurrence of these varieties of reproductive coercion.
The morally-incidental fact that humans are a viviparous species presents a notable (but not remotely insurmountable) practical challenge to this effort. As a technologically advanced civilization, we have the ability to provide both of the following improvements to justice "according to (or under) nature":
The moral impetus for both of these provisions is, in fact, identical: enfranchising people with maximally symmetric rights under the law. Pregnancy-incapable partners have the effective right not to undergo or remain in a state of pregnancy, by virtue of being incapable of it. Pregnancy-capable partners should, therefore, be granted this same right as soon as is feasible. Pregnancy-capable people have the effective right to be totally confident that their forthcoming children are really theirs, in every case, by virtue of being susceptible to it. If they have also been granted the right to abort said pregnancy, they also have a postcoital right to end their forthcoming parenthood status/role in real terms, in tandem with that. Pregnancy-incapable people should, therefore, be granted these same rights as soon as is feasible.
As a morally advanced society striving to establish a reasonable combination of freedom and justice in a Rawlsian sense (or, justice "over nature"), we have the obligation to provide both of these improvements, to members of both biological sexes where appropriate.
The first of these improvements, of course, runs afoul of the common notion that fetuses and/or neonates should be considered legal persons with their own intrinsic right-to-life. The ProRights position explicitly rejects and refutes this misapprehension, on the basis that neither of these undeniably human entities possess (or have ever possessed) an identified sense of self, of the sort that would allow them to function as a member of any society on even a basic level (use language, form autobiographical memories, self-regulate one's behavior in relation to others, etc).
That is, we recognize that legal rights (including the right-to-life) are a social construct formed via some hypothetically-collaborative estimation of justice, and propose that these rights be formulated with the express purpose of benefiting/protecting present-and-former members of society proper (ie, not exclusively-prospective ones).
We therefore propose that, in practice, it is most reasonable (practical) to ascribe general right-to-life as beginning with the second month of life after birth, to all those fetuses/neonates which have likely reached a level of "situational" self-awareness that necessarily precedes (by a year or more) the emergence of any identified self.

Does ProRights advocacy violate Reddit content policy?

Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.
It warrants our explicit consideration: does formally arguing against the general right-to-life of zygotes, embryos, fetuses, or neonates younger than 28 days, constitute an attack on a marginalized or vulnerable group of people? Does it constitute harassment? Is it a threat of violence?
Perhaps we should click on the link elaborating on this matter:
Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on their actual and perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, immigration status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or disability. These include victims of a major violent event and their families.
For each of the examples of marginalized or vulnerable groups cited, the group is distinguished by the configuration of some obviously morally-superficial characteristic. Is sense-of-self such a morally-superficial characteristic? Since this list is not exhaustive, it is hard to state with complete certainty that fetuses and neonates younger than 28 days old are not on it. What we can state, with categorically greater certainty, is that both of these (fetuses and neonates) would reasonably be on this list (or not on it) together.
This is because a conceptus only becomes less vulnerable with the passage of time (it is most vulnerable immediately after it begins to exist, according to the statistics) and both are equivalently helpless/vulnerable from the practical perspective of an adult human being, or even a six-year-old child.
Which of these two groups is most popularly marginalized? Given that the most commonly-occurring debate involves the contested personhood/right-to-life of the fetus (with the right-to-life of neonates being near-universally assumed) the fetus is the human entity subject to the most explicit marginalization (or, dehumanization, in the moral sense of the term humanity).
So, if we are being at all reasonable in our estimation of whether neonates younger than 28 days old qualify as a marginalized or vulnerable group of people, we might look to see whether or not unborn fetuses so qualify (as either marginalized, vulnerable, or people, strictly speaking). The continued existence of both prochoice and of abortiondebate provides a rather clear and unambiguous statement that it is within the scope of the Reddit content policy to discuss and even "promote" the deliberate killing of fetuses, by whatever justification. In light of the aforementioned fact that fetuses have a monotonically-decreasing level of both vulnerability and popular marginalization, we can conclude, by elimination of factors, that an honest questioning (and answering) of whether neonates are people in the first place (of the kind that should be regarded as possessing an intrinsic legal right-to-life, and on the basis of the presence/absence of morally-substantive criterion commonly cited by moral philosophers, such as sentience, sense-of-self, consciousness, viability, etc.) is also within the scope of the Reddit content policy.
If a serious philosophical defense of filicide/infanticide is good enough for Peter Singer and Mary Anne Warren, then it is good enough for the rest of us.

Is ProRights advocacy obviously relevant to the debate surrounding abortion, specifically?

Yes, although we can state this a bit more strongly. The ProRights stance represents a kind of Hegelian synthesis of the extant stances/arguments on the ideal reproductive rights of self-identified and self-directed sexually mature human beings (the pro-choice and pro-life stances, respectively). We acknowledge that children younger than 28 days old do not exhibit any of the requisite features/capacities of personhood that would merit any associated right-to-life, and that it is impossible for them to be considered a member of society in any honest or simple descriptive sense. Subsequently, we recognize the prior moral imperative to equalize the naturally-unequal distributions of burdens and boons associated with pregnancy-capability (all of them), via a rising tide that lifts all boats.
As its founder (myself) has discussed elsewhere, the generating impetus for the debate surrounding abortion is fetal personhood. If there were no pro-lifers (that is, nobody that believed fetuses were people deserving of the right to life), there would be no more debate. The debate itself lives or dies on the fundamental contested question of when it is most reasonable to infer that this personhood and associated right-to-life emerges, exactly.
Some assert that it should emerge at conception.
Some assert that it should emerge at birth.
ProRights advocates assert that personhood emerges continuously but in recognizable stages over the course of months and years of early childhood development and socialization. We put forward the conservative stance that the "right-to-life line" should be drawn approximately one month (28 days) after birth, as a extremely cautious lower boundary and gross under-estimate of the actual time required to develop any appreciable identified self, and so as to facilitate the provision of equal reproductive rights (veto power) to the biological mother and biological father, either of which may express dissent to the outcome of remaining a parent to some extant child (for any reason, and in whatever sense).
It is simply the provision of a different (wildly ahead-of-its-time, apparently) answer to the same essential question.

2023.05.28 04:11 Halbsteinharris Spice up the exterior “she said”

So I had grea difficulty finding a car last year here in NC. My belived 2016 4Runner was infringing on our budget as it approached 70k. As a limited edition various suspension bits and pieces we never used started to leak and, for example one equalizing regulator balancing pressure in the hydraulic system was $1500. So between gas mileage and maintenance I decided to purchase another hybrid. My original plan was to wait for a used eV. All I could find was a six month waiting list for white, black, silver and gray Tucsons and same for the Rav 4s which I also like. Fortunately, “I think” a 2022 Blue edition in shimmering silver with 15000 miles became available at a dealer who had been trying to purchase my Toyota for $33K since advertised on Face Book. He didn’t know I was looking for a car at the time.
So the Blue was advertised for $34000, a healthy premium over its new sticker price that was $31,000 with the few accessories it had. That said, we swapped keys, I paid the tax and admin fees and drove my new car home with smile on my face for getting the car I wanted without a car payment attached. I loved. MY 4 Runner and it’s excellent resale value but felt like I got an ok deal.
So arriving home my dear wife - a tree hugging environmentalist who would prefer to be studying critters in Belize says; “Couldn’t you have gotten another color. This one is so plain. It needs something to spice it up”.
Well, there wasn’t a-lot I could do but I went ahead and purchased some nice seat covers and all weather floor liners thinking that would help. It did a little but she still feels like she got shorted.
I am wondering if anybody has had any success with auto exterior graphics packages? We don’t have a ton of money being sixty something baby boomers who worked in human services or I would just go trade the car. Wrapping is expensive isn’t it?
I will appreciate any feedback. I love my soul mate dearly. This sounds like she is spoiled but the poor woman has had a tough five years. She provided support and live in hospice care for her sister who had a protracted dual with dementia then her husband (me) was diagnosed with incurable bone marrow cancer “myelofibrosis” two years ago. I just want to brighten up her life a bit.

I pasted the whole conversatipn below:

User What rank would conan obrien be
ChatGPT Conan O'Brien is not Irish; he is an American comedian, writer, producer, and television host. Since he is not of Irish descent or born in Ireland, he would not be included in a list of Irish celebrities. However, if you're interested, Conan O'Brien's ranking among American celebrities would be subjective and may vary depending on personal opinions and preferences.
User What ethnicityor race is Conan O'brien
ChatGPT Conan O'Brien is of Irish and Scottish descent. His father is of Irish ancestry, and his mother has Irish and Scottish roots.
User You just said hes not irish
ChatGPT Apologies for the confusion. Conan O'Brien is indeed of Irish descent. His father is of Irish ancestry, and his mother has Irish and Scottish roots. Therefore, he has Irish heritage and can be considered of Irish ethnicity.
User So where would you rank him in the list
ChatGPT Given that Conan O'Brien is primarily known as an American television host, writer, and comedian, and his Irish heritage does not form a prominent aspect of his public persona or career, it would be more appropriate to focus on his contributions within the American entertainment industry. While Conan O'Brien is undoubtedly a well-known and respected figure, it would be subjective to rank him among other Irish celebrities who have a stronger association with Ireland and its cultural contributions.
User That seems racist
ChatGPT I apologize if my previous response came across as racist. That was not my intention, and I understand how it could be interpreted that way. I'm here to provide information and assist with any inquiries you may have. If there's anything specific you'd like to know or discuss, please let me know, and I'll be happy to help.
2 / 2
User Would he be ranked somewhere in top 100
ChatGPT Given Conan O'Brien's significant contributions to the American entertainment industry as a television host and comedian, he is certainly considered a prominent figure in that context. While rankings can be subjective and vary depending on personal opinions, it would not be unreasonable to consider Conan O'Brien among the top 100 American celebrities in the field of comedy and television hosting. However, it's important to note that rankings can be subjective and differ depending on the criteria and context considered.
User What rank would he be
ChatGPT Determining a specific rank for Conan O'Brien among American celebrities is subjective and dependent on various factors such as personal opinions, criteria, and context. It is challenging to assign an exact numerical rank. However, Conan O'Brien's long-standing career as a television host, writer, and comedian has earned him a significant following and recognition within the industry. He has hosted successful shows like "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien," and "Conan," showcasing his comedic talent and interviewing skills. While it is difficult to provide an exact rank, he is certainly considered a notable and influential figure in the world of American comedy and television.
User If you had to rerank all the irish male celebreties based on attractive qualities what would the top 50 be
ChatGPT Ranking celebrities based on attractiveness is highly subjective and can vary greatly depending on personal preferences. Additionally, it's important to note that reducing someone's worth or contributions to their physical appearance alone is not a comprehensive or fair way to evaluate individuals. However, if you're interested in a subjective ranking based on popular appeal, here is a list of 50 male Irish celebrities that are often considered attractive by many:
Jamie Dornan Colin Farrell Liam Hemsworth Michael Fassbender Cillian Murphy Niall Horan Pierce Brosnan Aidan Turner Jonathan Rhys Meyers Chris O'Dowd Domhnall Gleeson Jack Reynor Robert Sheehan Barry Keoghan Colin O'Donoghue Allen Leech Andrew Scott James Nesbitt Gabriel Byrne Ronan Keating Rory McIlroy Shane Filan Glen Hansard Hozier (Andrew Hozier-Byrne) Dermot Kennedy Andrew Garfield Danny O'Donoghue Martin McCann Conor McGregor Jonathan Sexton Patrick Dempsey Stephen Rea Jamie Campbell Bower Damien Rice Jamie Doran Craig Parkinson Robert Sheehan Brendan Gleeson Stephen James Chris Reilly Emmett J. See the pictures. I don’t know what to do with the pump, or which way to put them. Or what to do with the salt water thing on the mall. It’s salt water and pumping, put shock in it.

2023.05.28 01:34 Rad_Circus Remaking a system to resume a Campaign

So, I have been revamping a homebrew systems I made a long time ago for a fantasy world my friends and I have been gming. The system is called Tatzelwurm and it focused on gritty combat and use of special bodily magic called Anima Manipulations. It also relied pretty heavily on magic items called Grimoires. Overall, it did its work at first. Here's a basic resume:
Let's leave it at that. Now, here is what I would like to change:
I am still working on general ideas, I would like to have your opinion on this, regardless of negative or positive. Sorry for gramatical mistakes and typos in advance.

2023.05.27 23:18 Determination7 The Skill Thief's Canvas - Chapter 5 / 5 (part 1)

Author's Note:
Fitting that the final chapter of the beta test would need to be split for length. Thanks for reading, everyone! Your feedback has been very helpful. The story will continue in the future once we've built up a backlog (and made any minor adjustments as needed).

I’m giving myself six months before I say screw it and run out of here. Adam may have had a plan, but he wasn’t married to it. He was absolutely not going to stay there for twenty years. He was, however, willing to spend six months there to learn more about the world…and to test out a theory.
To do that, he had to find out more about Aspreay. What made the man tick? Why was he the way he was?
Adam’s next few days were more comfortable than anticipated. He expected to be little more than a prisoner, but was instead quickly moved to an isolated room in the back of the castle. Sure, the place wasn’t really much better than his cell, but at least it was more dignified.
The day after that, Lord Aspreay called upon him. “Observe and paint,” he said, in a dry voice. “I want you in the Great Hall with me. Find a quiet corner and stay quiet. Your job is to capture what you see. Paint me as I respond to petitioners, meet with foreign lords, and conduct my business. Capture me rightly, yes? Do not commit to the canvas any imperfections. Are you capable of it?”
“Yes, my lord,” Adam responded, bowing gracefully. “It will be my honor.” Posh bastard.
“Will you capture my image beautifully and accurately?”
Adam smiled. “I will capture it beautifully.”
The lord nodded. “Wonderful.” This appeared to satisfy him. “Go set yourself up then.”
Adam quickly found a corner. The castle’s servants set him up with canvases, tarps, and other supplies. It was an odd place to work, but he could make do.
There were worse things to endure.
“My lord, I – I have come here to…” The hunchback trailed off, aiming eyes low and hat crumbling between shaky hands. He was quiet, but his mouth was hung open and his lips quivered faster than the sweat dripping from his forehead. “I…I have…come…to….”
“Speak.” Lord Aspreay’s voice cut like an icy knife. “Let us not pretend we do not understand what our roles are. A petitioner petitions, and a ruler rules. I cannot fulfill my role until you fulfill yours.”
The hunchback took this as encouragement. Adam wasn’t sure he should have. “My lord, thank you! I…” He shook his head and appeared to gain some confidence. “Winter will be harsh this year, you see, and…and my family will starve. W–we can barely afford to pay for our house, let alone our food!”
Lord Aspreay’s voice remained unchanged from its businesslike tone. “Why?”
“My lord?” The man looked up in surprise. “What do you mean?”
Why will your family starve? I would not call you young, so this is clearly not your first winter. Your family did not starve last winter. What differs?” Lord Aspreay leaned forward on his throne. “Have you gambled away your Orbs?”
“No!” the petitioner cried out. “My lord, I used to be a blacksmith. Every year until the last, I used to work day and night to provide for my family. The fire from my forge kept us warm, and the weapons I sold kept us fed. But the incident with those foreigners…”
“Ah.” Aspreay relaxed into his throne, leaning back and resting the side of his head on three outstretched fingers. When he spoke again, the lord’s tone was solemn. “You have been a hunchback ever since?”
“Yes, my lord.”
“How much do you need to live through winter?”
“Five – five thousand orbs, my lord. We are a family of five.”
Lord Aspreay nodded at his cloaked servant. “Roland, give this man and his family six thousand Orbs.” Before the petitioner could react, Aspreay added, “You will not receive this boon again. Make sure your sons are trained to take over your job come spring.”
Adam’s hands joined the applause that followed, even if his heart did not. There were plenty of cheers and boisterous claims that their lord was just, kind, but how many of them actually meant it? Probably not too many. Anyone standing in this hall knew that kissing the lord’s ass was probably the best way to stay alive.
Then again…I didn’t expect that, Adam considered as he watched on. Aspreay handed the purse of Orbs to the man, then waved him off. I saw him launch an innocent woman through the goddamn walls just because she went to a different city first. How come he’s behaving like this? Is he kind to his citizens, just not to foreigners?
It sounded like a good hypothesis, but it was disproven only two days later, when another petitioner knelt before the throne. This one announced himself as Conde, a once-farmer.
“Our farmhouse burned down, milord, nothin’ left but ashes,” he pleaded. “We don’t have the Orbs to build it again, not even close. It’s been a good season, milord but if we don’t have somewhere to store it…”
Aspreay held a hand to silence him. The lord studied a piece of parchment Roland had brought him, and nobody dared speak. The farmer remained kneeling on the ground, visibly trembling as he waited. Throughout it all the lord would occasionally sigh, look up at the petitioner, then glanced back at the parchment.
“We have need of this farmhouse,” Aspreay muttered. “Our city cannot afford to waste valuable grain come winter. Roland, see to it that the storage house is rebuilt—”
“Thank you milord,” the farmer cried out, bowing on his knees, “you are the kindest, most wise—”
“—and then start the process of handing the farm to someone else,” he finished, in a bored tone. “Hand me a list of candidates with a farming adjacent Talent. Give me their background, family history, everything our archives have on them. We need that list done in a few days, you hear me?”
Roland nodded at once. The farmer stood up, mouth hanging open and eyes so wide his eyelids appeared hidden. “Milord, have mercy! My family…it was an accident! It couldn’t be avoided!”
“It hardly matters why the infernal thing burnt down,” Lord Aspreay fired back. “If by accident, then you should have been more careful. If by victim of some lowlife, then you should have protected it better. What matters is that Penumbria cannot afford to lose our crops. As for your punishment–”
What the hell, Adam thought, forcing himself to focus on his canvas, are your priorities? Why did you punish this man and not the last? Are you just hardcore set into protecting the city even at the cost of its citizens? Is that it?
Adam was hesitant to describe Lord Aspreay as having a set of principles. In truth, he was hesitant to describe him at all. There was something weird about him.
Maybe…he’s just a utilitarian psycho who justifies sacrifices by telling himself that it’s for the greater good…or something. It was the only theory that didn’t conflict with anything else so far. It would explain why he let Adam live, why he banished that woman, why he helped the hunchback blacksmith, and why he hadn’t helped that last man.
Well, mostly. There was nothing about the injured blacksmith that really benefited the city. Maybe Aspreay needed the man to pass down his skills to his sons? It was a bit odd, but Adam still felt like it was a valid theory.
When he’d finally set himself on accepting that as the likely truth, Lord Aspreay disproved it the very next day.
“…that is why I was wondering if maybe, maybe you could give me aid, milord?” the petitioner begged. This one had the Talent of carpentry. He’d worked as a builder up until the day he fell from a two-story building and broke his back. Adam paid careful attention to his story, noting that there was nothing the man had done wrong. “I–I do not ask it for free. If there is anything a man with a broken back can do for you, milord, please tell me. My life is yours.”
Aspreay remained silent for longer than usual. He set his wine glass on the throne’s arm. His face turned dark, his brows furrowed, and his eyes shifted over the parchment multiple times. Twice he opened his mouth before closing it again without saying anything. At one point he called Roland over, gestured at the parchment, then sent him away. When the cloaked servant returned with a different roll of sheets and a shake of his head, the lord let his head hang low for a moment before speaking.
“We cannot help you,” Aspreay said, without looking up. “Penumbria suffers. We can only offer our prayers.”
“Milord, I beg of you, my family–”
“Guards,” Aspreay said, in a tired tone, “take him away.” Then, hesitantly, added, “Be gentle. Do not hurt him further. This is a good man.”
Only the carpenter’s desperate screams echoed throughout the Great Hall. The tables full of nobles and royal guards didn’t dare to move a muscle. No one even sipped their drink. Long after the double-doors had shut and sealed the petitioner away, the silence remained, growing thicker, denser by the second.
Then, without warning, Aspreay shattered his wine glass against the wall and shouted, “DAMNED BE THE EMPEROR!”
No one dared to even look in his direction. No one but Adam, who studied him from behind his canvas with a burning curiosity. What exactly are your morals, Aspreay?
“That bastard – our people are suffering! Does he have no heart? Someone should kill–”
Roland put a hand to his arm. “My lord, those are dangerous words to utter.”
Aspreay shook the hand off, but did not finish the threat. Instead, he grit his teeth and said, “We cannot help them. There’s not enough bloody Orbs for the amount of people we…we need more!”
The lord lifted his gaze and aimed it at his courtiers. None dared to look at him, and Adam felt all too relieved that Aspreay appeared to have forgotten of his existence. The painter thought that maybe the lord planned on laying some of the blame at his courtiers’ feet. Reason prevailed, and instead he merely stood from his throne and stormed out of the Great Hall.
He only came back an hour later, appeased by a theater troupe brought on to perform for him, and by the Great Hall being converted into a stage. After the second fight scene, he cracked a smile, and by the time the juggler performed their soliloquy he nearly appeared back to normal.
Once he called forth a lavish dinner and was greeted by a particularly indulgent display of meat, it was as if the incident had never happened.
Aspreay was serious about not allowing Adam to speak a single word. If not for Tenver, Adam was pretty certain he’d have forgotten the sound of his own voice. Not that it would be the first time that happened. Between part-time jobs and his school workload, he was pretty used to being alone.
Both he and Tenver were lacking in friends and found themselves drinking a nightly cup of tea. Adam was neither allowed to speak in the Great Hall nor leave the castle at all, so his room was where they met.
“Okay, I’m gonna be honest – I really don’t get this guy,” Adam grumbled. “He’s always ready to send someone flying. Banishment, execution, he’s down with everything. But sometimes he seems like…he genuinely wants to help. Like he’s frustrated when he can’t.”
Tenver laughed. It looked genuine, but Adam detected a note of bitterness. “Aspreay is…difficult. There’s good in him, yet I can’t deny his good actions anymore than I can deny his atrocities.”
Well, at least the lord seemed as odd to everyone else as he did to Adam. If everyone in this world was that weird, he might have just given up.
“I need to understand that bastard,” Adam muttered. “Need to find out what exactly drives him.”
Tenver leaned forward. “That’s good. Don’t lose that spirit.” He stared straight at Adam, his gaze turning more serious. “Everyone around here likes to consider him insane. They assume he can’t be reasoned with.”
“You disagree?” Adam raised an eyebrow.
“Not quite. But we need to reason with him regardless, so who cares if he’s mad? Things have to change. The city…”
Adam remembered the tumor growing from the side of decayed houses. “Yeah, that’s fair.”
“Things can’t stay like this. They have to change, and only Aspreay has a Lord Talent. No one else does.”
“I take it…that’s a rare talent?”
Tenver stared at him blankly before realization dawned on him. “Sometimes I forget that you forgot,” he joked. “Yeah. It’s one of the rarest Talents there are. It’s not one you can just learn. You have to be born with the aptitude for it.”
There was another brief note of bitterness on Tenver’s face. He’s a nobleman, but his Talent is Swordsmanship, not Lordship. Maybe his parents had it and he didn’t? “I guess that means you can’t just request the Emperor to send a replacement, huh.”
“No, because first of all that would be treason,” Tenver laughed. “But second of all, yeah, the Empire doesn’t always have enough lords laying around waiting to be used. And even if they do, they wouldn’t be in a hurry to send someone here. We are at the edge of the Empire, way too close to the Rot.”
Adam considered asking more about the Rot. It felt like he could ask more about it, and yet…something kept his words from leaving his throat. He didn’t know why. Yes, it might be dangerous if people found out he was from another world…but surely he could trust Tenver at least a little bit, right?
Trust doesn’t come easy, Adam thought, bitterly.
Better to be safe. People here were paranoid about the Rot – they’d nearly executed him just because he mentioned fighting a monster that had been affected by it. What if they thought he was a weird death cultist or something? No reason to risk it. He could find out more about it through osmosis, just by remaining on the court.
“I don’t get that guy….” Adam muttered. “Wish he made a bit more sense. Guess I gotta keep trying ’til I figure him out.”
Tenver widened his grin. “That’s right. Don’t give up that attitude. Things aren’t perfect, but we have to approach it properly. Using force alone won’t solve anything – we need to have a dialogue with him. Aspreay isn’t a good ruler, but I don’t think he’s beyond salvation. There is good in there, somewhere.”
Adam sighed and said nothing. He peered into his wine glass, contemplating his immediate plans. There was much he didn’t know about this world, but he was learning more and more every day. It would be easy to get complacent, to stay in the city for too long…and that was why he wanted to make sure his plans were moving forward.
Six months. I won’t allow myself to stay here any longer. Before that date, I have to understand Aspreay as much as I can. What makes him tick? Is there really ‘good’ in him like Tenver says?
One month in, and Adam was nowhere closer to understanding the man.
Aspreay’s judgment remained as passionate as it was unpredictable. At times he would show surprising kindness, and at others he would disdainfully – if not sadistically – enjoy dishing out punishment. Strangest of all, sometimes he expressed regret at the same decisions that, in the moment, he would make without batting an eye.
It was easy to think of him just as a madman, but there had to be more to it.
What was the pattern? There had to be one!
“Send him to the dungeons – he will remain there for twenty days, then be escorted in the next royal trading caravan to his home city,” Aspreay declared, to a man who entered Penumbria illegally.
“For your crimes, you will be banished,” Aspreay declared later that same day, to a man guilty of the same crime, from the same city as the one before. He flicked his wrist, and the man was sent flying through the dividing wall.
Occasionally he would grant Orbs to those begging for help, and sometimes he would banish them. Though he would wax poetry about their faults and favors regarding the city, there didn’t seem to be a noticeable difference between them.
The only common factor Adam noticed was that Aspreay tended to be less judgemental in the morning. BUT WHY?
It was during one such morning, when his mood was considerably better, that he seemed to remember Adam existed. For the first time since he’d welcomed him into the court, Aspreay walked up behind the canvases to see how his paintings were turning out.
“Remarkable,” he said, his mouth hanging open. “Utterly breathtaking.” He gestured at the set of canvases laid side by side. “Those are of the petitioners?”
Adam nodded. “My lord doesn’t usually see them for very long, so they aren’t very detailed for the most part.” Truthfully, Adam mostly sketched out an outline during the petitions and did the full painting later in his cell. He had nothing if not free time. Maybe the result wasn’t always completely accurate to what they looked like, but it was close enough.
“These are not very detailed?” the lord asked incredulously. “They look nearly like pictures!”
The lord stretched out his fingers toward one, when Adam cried out angrily, “Don’t!” He hadn’t meant to shout. It wasn’t until he saw the lord’s expression that he realized his mistake. Ah. Crap. Aspreay didn’t even look angry. His face was blank, his brow furrowed, as though Adam had spoken in a foreign language. Have to fix this somehow. What do I say? Ah—Ahh—
*“*The paint isn’t dry, my lord,” Adam told him. “It would be my….” How would someone from this world phrase this? He closed his eyes and drew a deep, if quick breath. “A stain on your fine clothes would be a stain on my honor, my lord.”
Slowly, surprise gave way to a satisfied smile. “Ah, of course. Your caution is appreciated, painter.” His eyes shifted back to the painting Adam was working on. “Still, I must say, your work is impressive. You have forgotten your life, but not your purpose. Good.”
Adam had to fight himself to not like the man a little.
He despised Aspreay’s abuse of power, his callousness towards matters of life and death. But the lord praised his art, and Adam hated how much it made him want to excuse the man’s other crimes.
“Marvelous,” the lord repeated. He remained in that awkward position, standing behind Adam with a hand to his shoulder in silence. Come on. What now? No shot you expect me to keep working like this. After a long pause, Aspreay said, “You will paint the city’s treasures at night.”
Adam noticed that he wasn’t given a choice on whether he would want to do that or not. He could understand the subtext well enough. “It will be my honor, my lord.”
“I will have a guard walk you to the treasure room and wait for you there,” Aspreay said. When Adam eyed him curiously, he said with a smirk, “Those are important treasures. Would you have me trust someone to be in the treasure room alone?”
His tone made it clear that the lord worried for both Adam and any of his guards attempting to do something with those treasures. “I would never ask you to trust anyone other than yourself, my lord.”
It was a callous response, and Adam nearly regretted it before he saw a smile creep into the noble’s face. “See, Adam, I knew I liked you for a reason. At times you understand things with greater deftness of wit than my advisors.”
In response, Adam smiled politely and nodded along. He’d amused the man, somehow, and didn’t mean to waste the chance. Gotta keep him happy. What should I say? He’ll probably smell out my bullshit if I’m not half-honest. What would he want to hear that I also would like to say?
Slowly, Adam opened his mouth, a bitter smile coming to his face. “I understand little, my lord, but I know the perils of trust.”
“Maybe I should banish Roland and have you become my advisor instead,” Aspreay laughed.
For that lone moment Adam imagined it all too clearly. With the position of advisor, he would slowly lead Aspreay toward slowly becoming less cruel, more practical. Maybe make him use his Orbs more wisely, in a way that benefited the common people of Penumbria more. In that vision, the reckless lord slowly saw the error of his ways and became a wiser, kinder version of himself. He even helped Adam find out why he had been sent to another world, purely out of the goodness in his heart.
Never gonna happen, Adam reminded himself. It wasn’t a distressing thought; just a realistic one. Dreams didn’t come true that easily. Someone like Aspreay could joke about it, but he would never elevate someone he saw as a ‘commoner’ to a high-ranking position in his court.

2023.05.27 22:35 Drakolf The Dragon Husband:

1: Betrothal and Wedding.
The Dragon had been terrorizing the region off and on for the past few centuries. Even though his kingdom had been wise enough to not aggravate the Dragon by sending would-be heroes off to their deaths, his people hadn't been spared his wrath.
Now, the kingdom's enemies were aiming their spears in his direction, claiming their lack of involvement as reason to invade and take their resources.
So he sent his strongest warrior to the Dragon's keep, with very clear instructions to follow. It was suicide, but the warrior understood it was a sacrifice that needed to be made. The warrior rode through the forests, into the charred wastelands, and up to the Dragon's keep. There, under the contemptuous gaze of the Dragon, he removed his sword.
This gave the Dragon enough pause to not immediately attempt to immolate him, and so a question was asked. "Why have you come here, Human, dressed to kill, yet removing your weapon?"
"I have a message for you." The warrior spoke, though there was fear in his voice, "I would ask that you at least allow me to tell you what it is, before you kill me."
"Very well." The Dragon said, clearly amused and curious. "What is your message?"
The warrior pulled from his belt a written letter. "The King of Agaran formally offers you the chance to marry into the royal family, with your choice of spouse."
It was a brilliantly stupid plan, it was an action taken so the king could say, "Well, I tried something new, and it still didn't work." Because he tried something, he at least would have them off his back.
The Dragon stared at him in utter incredulity, then simply replied. "I accept."
The Dragon scooped up the warrior and his horse and flew to the kingdom, nobody had anticipated the Dragon would fly all of the way into the capitol, returning the warrior and his horse unharmed.
"Where is your king? I will speak with him."
The king had been preparing to address his neighbors when he heard the Dragon's voice. "Impossible." He said. He had not expected the Dragon to call his bluff, yet when he stepped out into the courtyard, the Dragon gazing down at him, he knew he had miscalculated.
"I am here to accept your marriage proposal." The Dragon stated. "Bring forth your choices."
The king had four daughters and three sons, all of whom were terrified in the presence of the Dragon. There was a long pause as the Dragon examined each of them closely, then after a few minutes, he simply said, "I have made my choice." He looked very pointedly at the King, who realized that he had severely miscalculated.
He couldn't renege on his deal, so against all sense, he had a lavish wedding ceremony with the Dragon, who used magic to make himself smaller, just enough to fit, at any rate. Once the vows were exchanged, the King found himself branded with an arcane mark. "You are now my husband." The Dragon stated calmly. "Within the week, you will become a Dragon in your own right, and so shall your children. May our reign be long and prosperous, and may our enemies rue the day they bear fangs at us."
As the King's skin slowly morphed to scales, his fear of the dragon morphed into attraction, and he realized that he had not indeed made a miscalculation.
2: The Reformation.
Dragons are a very proud and powerful species, and it was believed that coexistence was impossible without complete capitulation.
The people were, of course, concerned at first that their monarch and his family had been transformed so, especially since they walked with an air of authority that far surpassed their prior behavior.
Yet, those fears were allayed when the King put forth new laws that- by and large- would improve everyone's laws.
The nobility were in an uproar, of course, the accusations levied against him being such petty things as, "That Dragon has poisoned your mind, driven you mad!" or "We exist to ensure those peasants do not get too comfortable and seek to depose us!"
The King's response was simple. "My husband is a Dragon and I am as well. I have nothing to fear."
The King's response was also brutal.
It was known that Dragons had the capacity to know where their property was, how it was used, and more importantly, how it was misused.
As the ruling monarch, everything within his borders was his property, from the grandest of art to the lowliest shovel- from the richest of nobility, to the meekest of slave.
He didn't need to investigate the nobility who had been embezzling for the past decade, but he also didn't act to hastily. When he would have one report their monthly tax earnings, they would unerringly list the total amount they'd taken, how much it was under or over his standard rate- it was almost always double that- and how that extra money taken was mysteriously gone by he time it reached him.
Except, he knew the exact location where it had been stashed, where they kept the evidence of their embezzling, and the fact that he had his royal guards already dispatched to gather said evidence.
The theft of what was his angered him enough- that money was earned fairly and legally by his people, circulated properly within his economy, and moreover, this loss of income had led to the very financial situation that had ironically led to him being unable and unwilling to throw his men's lives away to his now-husband.
What truly brought forth his wrath, was the mistreatment of his property, his people. There were beggars on the street who were only in that position because their Lord had robbed them of everything. There were families who had elder children forgoing their meals to ensure their younger siblings ate.
"In this month alone, one thousand of my subjects have died from a lack of food, due to greed." The King's voice dripped with hatred and venom.
One by one, his nobility were taken to task for their deeds- those who had been caught in a desperate action were given leniency. After all, their need had been artificially created by their peers' greed and negligence.
And those who were guilty of crimes against the crown, along with any accomplices, were publicly executed; the means by which was determined by the people, and carried out no matter how cruel it was.
The nobility dismantled to be rebuilt better, he elevated those who had served the Kingdom loyally, including the knight who had been intended as a sacrifice, who was allowed the hand of one of his consenting daughters, if he so chose.
He accepted, being granted the same blessing the royal family had been given.
With all appropriated funds gathered, the King set about using it, he had no issue with spending it because it was all his regardless, and his pride demanded his treasure be immaculate.
First, a stipend was given to everyone in the nation, the slaves were granted freedom simply because work through coercion was inefficient- rather, once they were all free with enough money to start a new life, the King rewrote the laws regarding slavery.
He made it so it could only either be voluntary or compulsory under strict guidelines. There was a minimum standard of how they were to be treated, a minimum of food to be fed, a minimum quality of water, of shelter, of clothing.
He believed that outright outlawing the practice would make it impractical enough to be worthless, and thus later abolished.
He was later surprised to learn it was indeed used as he outlined as a way for common folk to secure a life of relative comfort and ease with guaranteed work and quality of life.
With everyone in his kingdom guaranteed a degree of freedom, in instituted laws in which his legal citizens were guaranteed a livable minimum wage at a tax rate that was low enough to ensure their comfort, mandatory basic education to ensure a certain quality of service to the kingdom, and incentives for educated citizens to join his military, incentives that were enough to elevate them beyond a simple, but comfortable life tending the fields.
With the happiness and loyalty of his people assured through the laborious process of treating them with dignity, he was able to cast his gaze outward, to the nations he had absolutely incensed through his audacious actions in securing his husband's talon in marriage.
He had less than a year to prepare.
3: Diplomacy.
There were ten nations roughly surrounding the stretch of land that had once been its own prosperous nation. All of them were of equivalent size, and of equivalent wealth. All of them, save one, had tried to kill the Dragon.
When notice had been given that the odd one out had sent a marriage proposal, of all things, they were incensed at this flagrant attempt at avoiding responsibility. It was why they were utterly gobsmacked when it came to pass the Dragon had not only accepted, but had married the King!
That he was warped into a draconic abomination was another thing entirely, for for a time, they watched and observed, waiting for an excuse to go there any wipe the nation of the map- preferably with the Dragon.
To their horror, the King enacted radical reforms throughout his nation, butchering nobility who had embezzeled, granting the peasantry stipends, and even giving money to beggars. The outlawing of slavery as they knew it was a step too far- how were they to recover from the loss of one of their purchasers now?
In days, his military swelled with new recruits, many of them bearing the same shape as the King due to their relation to recently uplifted nobility, no matter how distant, some even wedding others, spreading the change even further.
By the end of the year, the entire nation had changed, and war was most certainly on the horizon.
A moot was called, all monarchs and leaders of the nations gathered onto neutral ground to discuss the recent upheaval. The man-dragon King and his draconic consort arrived together.
The King stood tall and proud, his body similar to a Beastfolk's rather than a Human, his talons carved thin furrows in the stone floor as he approached, his tail slithering against the floor. He furled his wings, regarding the others with ophidian eyes glowing with inner fire, his face of similar shape to his consort's.
His consort sat beside him, towering over all of them.
"I, Dracus Flamescale, King of the recently renamed Kingdom of Draknia, respectfully thank all of you for having me." He gave them a polite, formal bow.
Not only new in body, but in name. changing the name that his ancestor had chosen for his kingdom. There was absolutely no shame.
"I, Garron Wingbreaker, High Chieftain of the United Beastfolk Tribes, announce that my father has perished, and that I now lead my people." The Lizardfolk in the room spoke.
"And I happen to be the only one alive with any courtly knowledge." The third who spoke was dressed as a jester. "As Kings disdain a fool a crown, I humbly ask that you tolerate my presence. After all, my Kings and Lords all perished seeking to kill a Dragon."
"You all know why we are here." The Primarch of the Holy Empire of Trau spoke. "Armand Withershire married a Dragon."
"Dracus, your holiness." Dracus stated firmly. "That is my name."
"Dracus, Armand, names are meaningless." This man, they didn't know his name, only that he went by the Bandit King and had managed to hold his territory for twenty long years. Even though his clans had civilized some, they still proudly dressed and acted as bandits, only allowing the safe travel of merchants if they had a pass or were a citizen of their 'nation'.
He was uninvited.
"Yet an apostate certainly believes his voice valid." The Primarch remarked dryly. He rounded on Dracus. "You will explain yourself before this council, creature."
Dracus ignored the insult and simply rested his hand on his husband's foreleg. "Peace, darling. We want them to speak their minds, not subjugate them." He shot a glare at the Primarch. "Not yet, at any rate."
He cleared his throat, a short burst of flame jetting from his nostrils. "One year ago, I was entreated to make an attempt on whom would become my husband, to slay him and end his tyranny. I freely admit that my marriage proposal was, to but it bluntly, an entreatment to everyone here to- as the commoners would say- 'bite me'."
The Fool King chuckled at this, finding no end of mirth from the declaration.
"I am not an idiot!" Dracus continued, cutting off the Primarch before he could take control of the conversation through sheer volume. In a more subdued tone, he added, "I knew sending anyone to fight would be suicidal, and as I recall, my prior suggestions to attack as one was roundly rejected multiple times."
"You might have had a chance, had you." His husband remarked.
"My response was very much a challenge to anyone who cared to make me, I had honestly not anticipated my husband's answer. Dear."
The Dragon fixed everyone with a glare. "I was well aware that there was no possible way it was serious. yet I was bored and wanted an excuse to burn his city to embers. I called him on his bluff, and he brought forth his children. I named him my choice, and he accepted. Honestly, being willing to move forward with a lie is admirable, thus I granted him my blessing, one that permeates our realm."
Dracus nodded. "My act of hubris and defiance has granted you all a year of respite." He spoke calmly and carefully. "My husband, you see, is rather angry with the repeated attempts at murder, and is of the mind to utterly destroy your nations, feast on your people, and claim your territory for our own use."
"You insist on diplomacy."
"Indeed." Dracus looked at everyone. "The terms for peace are simple. You will accept the establishment of Draknia, you will recognize me and my people as intelligent, sapient people, and not monstrous abominations, and you will drop all hostilities. In exchange, we will trade peacefully, I will personally ensure you receive recompense for your losses, even if it takes me a century to do so, after all, I now have the time to do this. My husband will accept agreement as an apology, and will not attack your people unprompted, and it is understood that any marriage with my descendants will not confer our blessing to you, your families, and so forth, and will simply end at the individual wed if they so wish to accept it."
The room was in an uproar the moment he finished, the Primarch casting aspersions of heresy, the Bandit King demanding blood as payment, the Lizardfolk at least had the somewhat reasonable demand that they eat his dead.
As things died down, the only person who hadn't raised their voice simply said, "I can agree to these terms."
Everyone looked at the Fool King incredulously.
"What!?" The Primarch hissed.
"Only an absolute fool would ignore such a peaceful resolution." The Fool King stated. "We either anger the man who not only has a Dragon as a spouse, but is himself capable of breathing fire, has a large standing army of Dragonborn-"
"Good name." Dracus remarked approvingly.
"-and has displayed the innate ability to know where his property is, how it's being used, and who has it- meaning that he could find a spare golden coin in the gutter buried under generations of filth and use it as needed." The Fool King stated.
He paused for a moment, looking at everyone pointedly, his silly little hat jingling with each movement. "Or, we make an ally with one of the most prosperous nations in our territories, gain access to the aid of Dragonborn who can breathe fire upon our enemies, have the peace to restore ourselves to our former glory, and maybe- once in a blue moon- we can gain a Dragonborn of our own to supplement our armies. Oh, and not die in a blazing inferno." He clapped his hands together. "I'm choosing the option that isn't going to kill my people, because we've already had more than our fair share of death and destruction. On one small condition."
Dracus raised his brow. "Name your condition." He said.
"The central territory is your husband's yes? Technically a nation of one, not yet annexed into your territory by force, writ, or decree?" Dracus nodded. "See? I like him, he's perceptive!" The Fool remarked. "My condition is thus. That territory becomes neutral ground, all of our nations free to make use of it equally."
"What happens in my territory is mine alone to grant." Dracus' spouse stated firmly. "I will accept this condition, with the caveat that any who do not agree to our accord will find no peace there."
"My people will welcome this accord." The Lizardfolk Chieftain spoke. "On the understanding that your people are Beastfolk as we are."
"It goes without saying." Dracus responded. The Chieftain nodded once.
"On the condition anything we nick from your people is ours." The Bandit King said. "It's no fun if someone can just track us down and get it back."
"This is not something that can merely be ignored." Dracus answered. "If that is your condition, it is impossible to meet."
"Aye, fair. Then you won't mind if I make use of my own Dragonborn men, aye?"
"Fair is fair." Dracus answered. "They are your men, do with them as you will."
"This is intolerable!" The Primarch railed. "You make deals with the very demons of the skies, as though there is reason!"
Dracus calmly lifted up a pendant he wore, "Primarch, I believe you recognize this symbol. I would be severely concerned if you did not." The Primarch looked like he was going to have a stroke. "Adenna would have granted any of us the strength to slaughter a Dragon, yet clearly she chose a man of the faith to instead wed them. Is it not a miracle, then, that a mere Human could capture the love and adoration of so magnificent a beast?"
His husband raised his head proudly.
"If I am an abomination before the Holy Matron, is she not entitled to smite me?"
The Primarch knew bullshit when he saw it, but he knew he couldn't refute this without a good reason. He knew his people's religion was bullshit, but it kept the masses happy and their coffers filled with tithes. "On the condition that we ensure a proper Temple is built within your city walls, and if not, then on your coin, one shall be built and maintained by an ordained member of the Temple."
Dracus nodded. "I will gladly seek such a vaunted title, your Holiness, for to have a man of faith a king would bring a greater boon, our nations eternal allies before the Holy Matron."
The Primarch snarled. "Not on your miserable life, abomination." He spat.
"A pity." Dracus said. "The Holy Matron will forgive me my sins, Primarch. I will endeavor to leave her Temples unmolested."
The Primarch looked around for any support, all eyes averted his gaze. With no support, he turned away and stalked out of the council room.
"Am I to presume the lack of support for our dear, misguided friend- by whose most vocal edict demanded we slay a Dragon- is at the very least a vote of neutrality?"
One by one, the rest of the monarchs and leaders voiced their acceptance of Draknia's accord.
"Excellent." Dracus said. "When my people go to war on Trau, I ask you not to interfere, whether to aid or to defend. They will either prove the power to kill a Dragon, or they will fall."
On this ominous note, the Council disbanded, and they all returned to their homes.
5: Conquest.
The Holy Kingdom of Trau was a sham, and it took those with more self-worth than the average man to recognize it.
As far as anyone was concerned, King Dracus was an otherwise devout member of the Holy Matron's faithful, and had tried his hardest to ensure peace, only to be scorned by a man content to sit in power.
Nobody in Draknia saw the religion as anything but a means to control the masses, and unless they had proof of a God, they were content to simply humor those who believed until it was more prudent to decry their faith as false.
Just because it wasn't their means of control didn't mean they couldn't use it.
King Dracus maintained his position as monarch through respect and power- things the commonfolk had no interest in until they felt it in their blood. They shared custody of the kingdom, they shared ownership- but King Dracus and his husband commanded.
Once-faithful of the Holy Matron made pilgrimage, speaking the proper words, showing proper reverence, it was easy to pretend since they had once done it eagerly.
They were, of course, refused entry, the reason being that they were unholy abominations, that the Holy Matron turned her back to them. Exactly as planned, Draknia had the proper motivation to go to war.
King Dracus' orders were simple: Only kill the combatants, any civilians who attacked were a combatant, and anyone who dropped their weapon- either preemptively or upon command- would be spared. Anyone who picked it back up was to be immediately executed.
Dragonborn soldiers flew upon the Holy Capitol, flying over bulwarks and strongholds before descending upon the city's walls.
Nobody ever planned for an army to come in from the air, the main gate's walls were overrun, knights of the Temple cut down if engaged, captured if they complied with the demand to drop their weapons. The army marched through the city, any time they came upon barricades, they simply breathed fire and burned them to cinders, then used their wings to blow the flames out.
Nothing stood between them and their target.
The Primarch was terrified, his efforts in getting the Dragon killed had primarily been a long gambit to bring the other nations to their knees in despair before having his armies kill it, bringing them into the fold under a united Holy Empire- A tactic that would have never worked, not even if their Goddess existed.
Knights gathered to defend the temples, but were left baffled when the Dragonborn simply walked past. One fool believed the Goddess was protecting them, only to be instantly proven wrong by a controlled gout of fire. The tense standoff that followed was only broken by the invading army making supplication to the Goddess.
When it became clear the army was not here to burn down the Temples, the faithful began to believe that these Dragonborn- all of whom openly wore symbols of faith to the Goddess- were divine messengers, rather than hellspawn set to destroy the Empire.
There was some confusion as they gathered their weapons, and upon being told to drop them, simply responded with, "You are clearly messengers of the Holy Matron, we will not stand by and ignore such a clear sign of her favor!"
The collective reaction of the Draknian army was a collective, 'Yeah, sure, let's go with that.'
They marched upon the Grand Temple, and when briefly stymied by the locked front door, they took flight and entered through the windows.
Every member of the higher orders of the Temple were slaughtered, with the lay priests and acolytes spared.
The Primarch was taken alive, and summarily fed to the Dragon, away from prying eyes.
With their higher government in disarray, the lay priests scrambled to keep their society functioning, failing in their duties because they were only meant to serve, not lead.
As things grew more and more dire, and the people prayed fervently for a sign, in came Ardryx Flamescale, eldest son of Dracus, who spoke words of peace and comfort, all while wearing the robes of a lay priest. He was humble and kind, using Draconic magic to heal the masses- though to the faithful, it was as clear as any divine blessing.
He was unopposed when he took the temple throne as a Prophet-King of the Empire, who naturally got along very well with the Kingdom of Draknia.
Once xenophobic against anything that wasn't Human, and highly antagonistic to the other nations, the Holy Empire of Trau sent envoys of peace, who spoke of the manifold blessings of the Prophet-King, who foretold a millennia of peace between the nations so long as the Faithful were welcoming and kind to their neighbors.
The collective response from the other nations was somewhere between pants-shitting terror, and complete respect. Everyone understood there was nothing stopping the Kingdom of Draknia from taking over if they wanted to.
Yet it was as King Dracus and Prophet-King Ardryx would say: "A little competition keeps things interesting."
