2023.06.08 00:05 Kenji182 NYC smog made my same-day oath ceremony NOT HAPPEN
To go to the meat of the story, today I had my naturalization interview.
I'm on a unique situation where my interview got schedule to a month before my wife and I are flying to out native country to have our first daughter. Being close to family and all.
I tell that to my assigned officer and he says the magic words: "Do you want and are you able to take the oath today?"
I say a resounding "YES".
I follow him to a room. I can hear people taking the oath in the next room. I can't believe how luck I am.
After 5 minutes he comes in, as me to follow him back to his office and tells me the building is being shut down for the day because of the heavy smog in NYC from the Canadian wildfires.
He says maybe we can resolve this until it's time to get a passport. If that doesn't happen, I can do it in December when we're back to the States.
Just wanted to share this little anecdote.
Good luck out there everybody!

My governor just signed a couple of anti-trans bills today. We knew they were coming, but it still stings. The bill takes effect August 28.
ABC News Article Covering the bills I get my care and my prescriptions through Medicaid (I'm disabled and broke) and I'm obviously worried about how this is going to affect me.
My girlfriend and I are working on moving to Minnesota as soon as we can get the funds together.

2023.06.07 23:46 Legitimate_Ideal5485 This is my First Reddit Post Ever!
Hello-I am a 43 year old female. I had the first sign of HS at 8 years old, but not diagnosed until I was 21. In the student health clinic at my university of all places.
When I was first diagnosed, I was a severe case, under my arms, groin, and under my breasts. I tried everything recommended back then, and still had to have grafts under my arms and a large breast reduction. My groin was still a mess. I was afraid of surgery in that area, and never pursued it. To say that area is battered would be an understatement.
And then last summer, I started with flairs on my waist line on my right side. They’re quite painful. I was in a high level of stress for about 8 months (I lost my job, and had to move states to gain employment in my field). I was broke, depressed, and stressed about everything. When I moved to where I live now, I immediately established with a dermatologist. We tried some things. I we tried remicade, and now cosentyx. During it all, I was in some type flare. Nothing was working. The dermatologist would occasionally write me a prescription for pain medication. As a last resort, he said removing the diseased tissue is the only way to solve this. So, I agreed.
I had a large portion of my waistline remover, and the 10 inch incision about 1/2 inch below where my pants sit. Surgery was on 2/24/23. It was an out patient procedure. She basically made a flap and then sewed my skin together. Unfortunately, she did not remove ALL of the diseased tissue. And almost immediately the HS tunneled directly to the incision. It caused me to miss an additional week do work.
Since that time, I’ve had to wear a bandage in that area. I’ve been on antibiotics for months. It’s puffy and hard one day, but not the next. The only thing that is constant is the pain. I saw the surgeon every week for over a month. I had appointments with my PCP. I was having severe pain back in April and I went to ER (It was a Sunday afternoon). They did an ultrasound, and did not see any cyst or abscess underneath that area. It’s literally just the tunneling. Anyway, the dr gave me a pain pill in the ER and then sent me home with 10 more. Ok. I stretched them as long as I could. I was finally able to get in with my PCP the week before Memorial Day. During the visit, I told her that I’m in a debilitated state. I have to work from home about 90% of the time. My house is a mess. I haven’t been cooking. I’m pretty depressed. The dr and I (she is a family med resident) discussed my history, what has transpired since my surgery, my trip to the ER. We agreed that she would start me on Aleve and gave me 8 ultram for the severe days. To be clear, that was 8 for 14 days. Meanwhile, I was messaging her via the EMR. I told her I was still having pretty intense pain. I didn’t hear back for a couple of days. And then June 3 happened…
I woke up on Friday and my side was basically burning. It was hurting so badly. I called and tried to get in with my PCP, or another of her associates, but nothing was available. Well, I made the mistake of going to the ER. It was not busy. When I checked in my BP was 158/100. I was struggling. The ER Dr listened to me and stated that I needed a CT to make sure there isn’t anything that the US can’t see. I also had another US. And a bunch of blood work. They also gave me a shot of morphine. The surgical resident came down to see me. And then 2 hours later I was discharged. I got upset. I told them that I refused to leave until someone help me. Not give me drugs, but help me. Figure something out. I then asked for a patient advocate, and was told I had to call them. I was upset at that point. I regrettably yelled at the nurses, and for that I actually feel bad. The dr told me that my PCP has to help me. But she isn’t either. My pain was completely dismissed. I believe they called security because I saw one walking back that way. So? I left. I got in my car and just balled. I was mortified. Embarrassed. In pain. And no one cared to help even though I asked.
Forward to that evening. My PCP responded to my message. She wants to start me on Lyrica. I said yes, can I also have some more ultram for the acute pain. Today, I received a message from her stating that I need to speak to a behavioral pain specialist and that I may have complex region pain syndrome. I looked it up. It seems to be phantom pain. She also suggested that start on a course of narcan. To be clear, I signed a pain contract when she wrote me the ultram prescription. I do not take drugs for the sake of taking drugs. I’m in real pain, it isn’t fake or in my head, it’s the HS. I’m at my wits end. What do I do? I’ve been labeled a drug seeker for advocating for myself.

2023.06.07 23:30 Western-Nectarine395 Chronic wrist/palm pain since January 2022
Hi 24M, 171cm, 87kg, no smoking or drinking with chronic wrist/palm pain from Slovakia.
I'd like to please ask for help regarding a health issue I've been expiriencing for the past year and a half (started somewhere between january and february 2022). I have a problem with my righ hand, more specificaly I'm expiriencing pain in the middle of my palm and also pain in the wrist near schaphoid (not at the base of my thumb but bellow). The pain also comes with weakness and I'd say that the pain is more dull than sharp, but becomes sharp after using my hand or better to say while I'm using my hand (I don't have problem gripping things, talking about losing strenght, but it hurts when doing certain tasks..).
I've had both MRI and a X-ray done on my hand the X-ray came out negative and the MRI came with the diagnosis of triscaphe synovitis (talking only about radius side of my wrist diagnostics.. I will leave the whole diagnosis at the bottom + blood test all fine). The ortophedists tried to use a anti-inflammatory cortisone shot (I'm not sure what exactly I've got but was told it was a anti-inflammatory shot) 3 times to my wrist already (1st in december 2022, 2nd in january 2023 and now third recently at the end may 2023) and also I've had anti-inflammatory medicine perscribed before going to the ortophedist (October 2022), but both had no positive effect on my wrist or palm (in terms of relieving pain). The pain comes usually the next day after I use the hand and stays for a few days if I rest the hand. If I don't rest my hand, then the pain becomes greater and then takes much longer to go away when resting. Whenever I put some sort of load on the hand it triggers the pain and also when I use the hand for a few hours for example using a computer mouse. Also something between my schaphoid and radius seems to be not right - I think it's the radius bone that starts popping up after I use the hand and that also comes with a loud pop sound. Both orthopedists I've been to, claim that it is normal, but I have a feeling it's somehow connected to the pain, since this started to happen after the pain started.
I should also specify that when the pain first occured, it was in my palm and I had no issue or pain in my wrist. The pain kept appearing in my palm for like 3 months (always only after using the hand intensively - so playing games or lifting heavy stuff) and after the 3 months It started to appear in my wrist too (always on the thumb side). Now the pain can come in both wrist or palm at the same time, but can also appear in both separately (but it's more frequent in the wrist). When the pain starts it usually goes down my forearm (that wasn't the case right after it started to appear in the wrist, it started going down my forearm after like a month or 2 and now is pretty much always present when my wrist starts to hurt).. maybe I'd not call it a pain that is in my forearm, it something between pain and weakness.
I've also tried a wrist bandage that one of the orthopedist said to try and the wrist actually hurt more when I had it applied. I tried icing, warm watter, multiple types of anti-inflammatory gel (for example Voltaren) and resting the hand (longest 3-4 weeks), but nothing reduces the pain once it occurs. (resting obviously helps, but it always takes days to help and recently I went more than a week of resting with not getting better..) I also tried some exercises that are meant to help with the pain, but it always only got much, much worse after I did them.
Something to metion - I've been sick sometime in March 2023 and during that the pain got much worse even tho I barely did anything with the hand.
And there is also one more thing that happend 5 days after the last anti-inflammatory shot - My whole wrist started to hurt super bad, worse than ever before and it was kind of a different type of pain. It was sharp and I could'nt move my wrist. I got some anti-inflammatory and pain relieve medicine perscribed and that is helping for now.. that new pain is still there tho when I move my wrist up or down in a certain point and then I can go past it only through pain. I'm not sure if it's connected to my original issue because it's a different type of pain but as I said it was triggered by the last anti-inflammatory shot. Also with that new type of pain, now when it got a bit better I also now got the classic pain near scaphoid accompanied by weakness, so I don't think the last anti-inflammatory shot helped.
These are all the symptoms, so no numbness or tingling etc... Never had redness. Only thing is that my wrist on the thumb side is a bit swollen, but it is barely noticable.
The orthopedist/surgeon said at the end of May that he can open the hand despite negative X-ray and MRI if it won't get better with the last shot I got. So that is the only thing right now.
The whole wrist MRI results (translated by me from Slovak to English.. so maybe not completely correct):
TFCC - degenerative changes palmer class 2A
fraying UCL
negative ulnar variant - minus 3,5 (normal under 2,5)
DRUJ - sign of ulnar impingement syndrome
DRUJ with mini. efuzioun in recessus sacciformis
VRUL - hypertrophy
DRUL - hypertrophy
subchondral sclerosis ulnar / sigmoid / notch distal.radia in DRUJ
triscaphe synovitis
distal component of lig. scapholunatum palmarly fibrous
btw the MRI was done at the start of April 2023 and the X-ray december 2022
If someone has any ideas I'd really appreciate any help solving this puzzle. Thanks!

2023.06.07 23:22 neoyoda How long for testosterone to bounce back? And/or fatigue?
Hi all,
Orchiectomy April 3, thankfully that's probably all I need for now aside from surveillance, however I am still feeling quite fatigued. I am dealing with depression and work issues that I'm sure contribute, but I continue to wonder if there is a physiological component to the fatigue, especially since it's been way more of a thing since the surgery.
I asked the urologist how long it should take for the remaining testicle to fully take over all testosterone production. They didn't know off the top of their head and didn't seem that concerned about it, said they generally wouldn't test for it unless there are clear signs of a problem. OK.
Anyone with personal experiences or knowledge that might help inform my approach to the situation? I think it's likely that there is something physiological going on, but I acknowledge I am not in a good place with depression/stress either. Thanks!

2023.06.07 23:20 Zombiak307 [Diplomacy] It's rocketin' time
April 2026
Public announcement made by UAE government
Everyone knows that USA is the leader in space technology since cold war. We don't hear as much about other nations space programmes as we hear about NASA. Here, in UAE, we also want to take our slice of space cake.
Currently, our space programme is small and underfunded. It does not perform its functions well enough for our needs. We will expand our space agency budget by 250 million USD.
Currently, one of the things we lack the most is experience and knowledge. We would like to change this, by signing an agreement with NASA and/or China Space Agency. We would like them to send their engineers to train ours and help us with building our launch pad(s) and creating first rockets. In return, we are willing to share the results of our research with them or just pay them.
If implemented correctly, we would like to create a launch system capable of low earth orbit by 2028, leave earths sphere of influence by 2029, and complete a sample return mission by 2030.
We will also start working on developing reusable rockets, to decrease the cost of rocket launches. We believe that space opens up many possibilities important for everyone and as such, it should be accessible to as many people as possible.
If Yemen agrees, we would like to place our launch pads on Socotra Island.

2023.06.07 23:16 princejadid Nasdaq Toughest Day in Over a Month Amid Tech Turbulence and Economic Anticipation June 7, 2023
| U.S. stock markets showed mixed results today, with technology stocks experiencing some turbulence following their significant rally. Investors adopted a more cautious stance in light of the upcoming consumer inflation report and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy committee meeting. The Nasdaq Composite saw a notable drop, primarily due to a slowdown in the technology sector. Contrarily, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained marginally, helped by advances in industrial giants Caterpillar and 3M. The S&P 500 recorded a slight decline but remained close to a critical level that could signal the end of a long bear market. Treasury yields hit fresh highs in June, with 10-year and 2-year yields rising. The goods and services trade deficit for April came in narrower than expected, a positive sign. However, the focus remained on upcoming economic indicators and policy updates from the Federal Reserve, which could significantly affect the economic outlook. In other global developments, China reported a decline in its trade surplus. Interestingly, Warner Bros. Discovery emerged as a top gainer on the S&P 500 following reports of a potential partnership with Amazon's Prime Video Channels. As investors navigate these developments, a careful watch on key resistance levels, particularly for the S&P 500, may prove beneficial. #SPX #NDX #DJI #MarketUpdate submitted by princejadid to u/princejadid [link] [comments] |

A pile is a long cylinder of strong material, like concrete that is pushed into the ground to provide a stable foundation for structures built on top of it. The following scenarios need the usage of pile foundations: When a layer of poor soil is present at the surface. Because this layer is unable to hold the load of the building, the loads must be transmitted to the layer of firmer soil or hard rock that lies beneath the weak layer.
📷
When a structure has a lot of large, concentrated loads, such as a high-rise skyscraper, a
bridge, or a water tank. To create an appropriate stable foundation, a pile cap is a dense concrete pad that sits on concrete piles or timber piles put into the soft or less-strong ground that would otherwise need
ground improvement. It is frequently found in the deep foundation of a building, usually a multi-story structure or at support level or heavy equipment, or in the deep foundation of a bridge.
The load of the building is distributed into the piles by the cast concrete pile top. A "raft," which is a concrete foundation floor sitting directly on soft soil that may be prone to subsidence, is a comparable construction to a pile cap.
Can Pile foundations withstand more weight than spread footing?
Yes, the load-carrying capacity of pile foundation is superior to spread footings. The pile foundation transmits the load to the hard strata.
What are pile caps and their functions?
Pile caps are dense reinforced concrete mats that sit over “concrete or wooden piles (driven, bored, or cast-in-place) to provide foundation stability. The major aim of the pile cap is to transmit the load of the columns to the underlying piles, which is usually too large for large buildings. The
pile caps are tested and designed to withstand the load of the superstructure.
A rough foundation is a comparable form of foundation for pile caps. The load from the columns is carried directly through the raft to the mud straight in the case of the raft, which is a dense and broad RCC slab lying immediately at the base. The raft can only be utilised if the soil layer is stable and capable of sustaining large weights without failing; otherwise, piles and pile caps are typically used.

- The M25 mix is the minimal concrete grade that can be used to make heaps and pile caps.
- A full pile cap can be fitted intact in the case of minor piles, such as 2-3 piles.
- Casting is done in layers for larger pile caps.
- The column reinforcing bars are embedded in the pile caps up to the length of their growth.
- After casting, the pile caps are fixed for 28/29 days and the shuttering is detached, the adjacent soil is flattened and compacted using a compactor.
- When a number of piles are grouped, piles are constructed like a raft instead of piles.
📷
Shape and Size of Pile Caps:
Pile caps are dense reinforced concrete mats that provide foundation stability by resting on concrete or woodpiles (driven or bored and cast-in-situ). These pile cap sizes lower the amount of planning area required for a symmetrical pile layout in relation to the load. The pile cap should allow the outer pile to exceed a minimum of 150 mm, although it should not be excessive, typically not exceeding the pile's diameter.
Depth of Pile Cap:
The depth of pile cap is dependent on the following factors:
- Shear Capability of Pile Cap.
- Soil shrinkage and swelling.
- Frost attacks.
- Pile anchorage.
- Water table & soluble sulfates.
- Holding bolt assemblages for steel columns.
Because it is subjected to concentrated loads, the pile cap is usually deeper than the pad footing. This results in substantially stronger bending moments and shear forces. The additional depth, on the other hand, offers the pile top more rigidity, which helps transmit the load uniformly across all piles”.
What are the different types of Pile foundations?
Pile foundations are classed according to their function, materials, and installation procedure, among other factors. The types of piling foundations utilised in construction are as follows:
Depending on the Function or Use:
Materials and Construction Methods for Soil Compactor Piles:
- Piles of wood
- Piles of Concrete
- Piles of steel
- Piles made of composite materials
Read More: Why does Concrete need Reinforcement? 6 Important Points What is the Function of Bridge Foundation or Pier and its Types? 5 Important Points Pre-stressed Concrete, Pre-tensioning and Post-tensioning: 3 Important Points When should you use for bored piles and driven piles?
Driven piles are driven straight in and transmit the load by friction and/or bearing, whereas bored pier foundations are normally poured in place and transfer the load only through bearing Bored pier foundations are typically shallower than driven pile foundations.
When the top strata consist of degraded rock overlying strata of sound rock, bored pier foundations are preferred. It becomes difficult to drive bearing piles into the decomposed rock in this situation. Bored pier foundations can be easily erected in stiff clays that offer significant resistance to the drive of a bearing pile.
How do you size a Pile Cap?
The number of piles required to support the weight determines the plan dimensions of a pile cap. The shape and size of the Pile Caps are normally as below:
- Hexagonal for six to seven piles
- Triangular for three piles
- Rectangular for more than seven piles
How do you calculate Pile spacing?
The pile should be at least 3 feet wide, 3 feet across, and 3 feet tall in order to reach optimal temperatures (one cubic yard). That is the smallest compost pile that can generate temperatures high enough to kill weeds and pathogens, but smaller compost piles will also work less efficiently.
How to determine the thickness of the Pile Cap?
Determining the thickness of the Pile Cap plays a very important in the process of the Pile Cap Design. The thickness of the pile cap should be adequate enough to comply with the anchorage bond length parameters. As a thumb rule, if the diameter of the pile is less than 550mm, then pile thickness will be twice the diameter of the pile cap. If the diameter of the pile is more than 550mm, then pile thickness will be (1/3 (8 times of pile diameter - 600mm)).
How to Install Piling Caps?
Piling caps are available in a range of sizes. It is recommended to provide 26 sizes of piling caps in two shapes:
- Round and
- Square, ranging from 6 inches to 18 and a half inches.
To begin, make sure the pilings are at the height you want them to be. Before you measure for the piling caps, make any final cuts. Making cuts afterwards may change the measurement of the pile, resulting in a poor-fitting hat, so make any necessary changes to the heaps before measuring for and purchasing pile caps.
Innovation in Pile Cap Design:
Here are some innovations in pile cap design:
Post-tensioned pile caps:
Post-tensioning is a technique that involves applying tension to steel cables after the concrete has hardened. Post-tensioned pile caps use this technique to increase their strength and reduce the amount of steel required, resulting in a more efficient and cost-effective design.
Precast pile caps:
Precast pile caps are manufactured offsite and then transported to the construction site for installation. This method reduces construction time and can result in a more consistent and higher-quality product.
Modular pile caps:
Modular pile caps are designed to be easily assembled and disassembled, making them ideal for temporary structures or structures that need to be relocated. They can also be used to speed up the construction process, as they can be prefabricated offsite and then assembled quickly on-site.
Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) pile caps:
Fibre-reinforced polymer FRP pile caps are made of composite material that is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. FRP pile caps offer a cost-effective solution for structures in corrosive environments, such as coastal areas or chemical plants.
Hybrid pile caps:
Hybrid pile caps combine different materials, such as steel and concrete, to create a more efficient design. They can be designed to maximize the benefits of each material while minimizing their drawbacks, resulting in a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Overall, these innovations in pile cap design have improved the efficiency, sustainability, and durability of structures, while also reducing construction costs and time.
Risks and Mitigation Measures of Pile Cap Design
Risk MitigationInadequate bearing capacity of soilConduct a thorough geotechnical investigation to determine the bearing capacity of the soil. Choose appropriate piles or improve the soil before construction.Inaccurate load calculationsUse accurate load calculations based on the actual loads that the pile cap will support. Verify the load calculations with a structural engineer.Poor quality of materials or workmanshipUse high-quality materials and ensure that the pile cap is constructed according to the design specifications. Conduct regular quality checks and inspections during construction.Settlement or heave of the foundationMonitor the foundation for settlement or heave during and after construction. Take corrective action if settlement or heave exceeds the allowable limits.Construction delays or budget overrunsDevelop a realistic construction schedule and budget. Use efficient construction methods and monitor progress regularly. Make necessary adjustments to the schedule and budget as needed.Environmental factors such as flooding, earthquakes or hurricanesConsider the potential impact of environmental factors during the design phase. Use appropriate materials and design techniques to withstand these events.
Like any other construction project, pile cap design comes with its own set of risks. Some common risks and mitigation measures of pile cap design are:
Overall, it is important to carefully assess and manage risks in pile cap design to ensure that the final product is safe, efficient and meets the required specifications. This can be achieved through careful planning, thorough inspections, and effective risk mitigation strategies.
I hope the blog provides you with a sound understanding of the Pile Cap Design and its associated features.

2023.06.07 23:09 nujie 60 day move out notice
Hi guys, I’m seeking some advice on a situation I’m in. I currently live in an apartment in Florida and I plan on moving in July when my lease ends. in April I got a notice on my door stating to return the notice to my office if I “plan on renewing my lease for one year or on a monthly basis” I planned on doing neither so I didn’t submit it. I heard from another tenant that the apartment needs a 60 day notice if you plan on moving out, so I called and emailed and finally they answered today and they told me to come to the office. They told me that I would have to sign a form stating that I was breaking my lease and that I would owe them -blank- amount for breaking the lease. I didn’t sign it and requested to speak to the manager. I have a meeting with them in the morning. My lease says that if I fail to give them a 60 day notice I owe them one months base rent. I don’t mind paying however I need that in writing and I do not want this on my renters history. How do I approach this without having to go through lawyers. Any and all advise is appreciated.
