New email from Unleash the Archers I got today

2023.06.07 21:19 jedihush New email from Unleash the Archers I got today

📷
Things are happening!
📷
The new album is well underway :) Sorry it’s been so long since our last email, things have been pretty busy in our personal lives over the last year (in case you didn’t know, Britt and Scott had a baby girl last October!) So we wanted to reach out and just give you a little update on what’s going on in the world of UTA! We took 2022 off from touring to write a new album, as it can be really hard to focus on new music when you’re constantly having to stay in shape to play live. By December we had ten demos that we were happy with and scheduled studio time for the spring. We rented a studio on Vancouver Island and stayed in an airbnb together (with a six month old as well haha!) for the entire month of April so we could stay distraction-free. We wrapped tracking on April 31st but Brittney did a few more solo sessions in May to record some harmonies and a few vocal lines that were missed. The tracks are now in the insanely talented and highly capable hands of Jacob Hansen, who will be taking on the mixing and mastering duties for us once again. During our time on the island we also did a photo shoot with our favourite photographer, Shimon Karmel, and shot a performance video with the boys over at RuneGate Studio; we can’t wait for you to see all their hard work and should be posting sneak peeks soon! In case you are wondering, yes this will be a concept record, and no it does not follow the story from Apex & Abyss. This is an entirely new world with new characters and we think you’re really going to like it! Brittney will be sure to do her Track-By-Track videos to explain the story like always, but we’d love to hear what you think the next album is going to be about ;) We are waiting on a release date from Napalm but we think you’ll get your first taste of singles this fall. Make sure to follow us on Instagram so you don’t miss out on the announcement!

📷
We also wanted to let you all know that we just happened to find 50 copies of our Explorers EP on the shelves at IndieMerch that had mistakenly been archived! We got them shipped up to us and will be holding a lottery to give everyone a fair chance to get their hands on a copy. Make sure to join our Discord channel as we will be announcing how to enter the lottery on there before posting it anywhere else!
DISCORD
📷
Lastly, we just wanted to thank you all so much for your patience and support over the last couple of years. A lot of you had tickets to our shows that were cancelled in 2021 and we want you to know that we haven’t forgotten about you! We are working on eastern Canadian dates as well as dates in Europe to coincide with the release of the new album. We are also starting to confirm festivals for next summer and should begin announcing those shortly. Touring is going to be different for us now that Scott and Britt have a kid, but they promise they are going to make it work somehow, someway ;) Can’t wait to see you all on the road very soon! Keep in touch! UTA \m/

2023.06.07 18:10 1stforall I’m Kevin, the First Amendment Specialist at the Freedom Forum, and I’m Leigh (they/them), Coordinator of School Outreach Services at the Brooklyn Public Library. We love books and we love the First Amendment and we want to make sure everyone knows, values, and defends both! Ask Us Anything!

PROOF: https://i.redd.it/qundzrdxup3b1.jpg
In our 2022 “Where America Stands” survey (https://survey.freedomforum.org/ 2022-update/), the Freedom Forum asked what, if any, would be an appropriate reason to ban books from being taught in classes or available in the library at middle and high school levels. Of the more than 800 Americans we polled, 57% said “none.”
Yet, that same year, American Library Association reported a record 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources (http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2023/03/record-book-bans-2022), double the number from 2021 and the highest in the ALA’s 20 years of compiling this data. And almost every week, there is news of another book being removed from a public school classroom under parental challenge.
Books are protected by the First Amendment (http://www.freedomforum.org/books-bans-first-amendment/) to the United States Constitution. The First Amendment also protects parents’ right to petition the government when they feel their needs – and the needs of their children – are not being met. What happens when the First Amendment is being pulled in two different directions? The Freedom Forum is a non-partisan, non-profit organization whose mission is to foster First Amendment freedoms for all. Its First Amendment Specialist Kevin Goldberg (Twitter: @kevinmgoldberg) (https://twitter.com/kevinmgoldberg), an attorney with more than 30 years of experience navigating First Amendment issues, is ready to talk about book bans, parents’ rights and the First Amendment.

Kevin will offer the legal perspective and we’re excited that he’ll be joined by Leigh Hurwitz, Coordinator of School Outreach Services at the Brooklyn Public Library – and not just because we think so highly of BPL that we’re honoring it with one of our annual Free Expression Awards on June 8! Leigh will provide valuable real world perspective on how book bans and challenges are affecting teens throughout the country, what happens when a book is challenged, and how librarians navigate these disputes. Although, it’s really not about the books, but about the people the books represent.
In April 2022, BPL launched Books Unbanned (https:// www.bklynlibrary.org/books-unbanned), an intellectual freedom initiative formed in response to the alarming rise in book bans and challenges, driven by organized political groups across the country. Over the last year, book challenges, which primarily target YA titles, have continued to rise, with the American Library Association reporting (https://www.ala.org/news/state-americas-libraries-report-2023) the highest number since they began compiling data two decades ago and nearly double the year before. Moreover, the ALA reports the majority of challenged titles were by or about people of color or members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
In addition to advocacy, the initiative also supports young adults who are facing censorship in their local schools and public libraries by making our collection available via the National Teen ecard. The ecard provides any young adult (ages 13-21) in the country with free access to BPL’s 500K+ collection of eBooks and audio https://www.bklynlibrary.org/). Since the start, we have issued over 6,500 ecards to young adults in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, with over 100,000 books having been checked out to date.
All new cardholders are invited to join BPL’s Intellectual Freedom Teen Council (IFTC) which holds monthly virtual meetings that give teens an opportunity to learn about censorship efforts their peers are facing in other parts of the country. In February 2023, BPL teamed up with PEN America to co-host the first-ever Freedom to Read Advocacy Institute https://www.slj.com/story/PEN-America-Brooklyn-Public-Library-To-), a four-part virtual educational and training program for high school students nationwide that prepares and certifies the next generation of free expression advocates to combat book banning and fight for the freedom to read in their schools, libraries, and communities.
Books Unbanned has garnered extensive national and local press coverage and contributed an important counter narrative against the often loud and provocative voices demanding that books be pulled from classrooms and library shelves and demonstrating that libraries have an opportunity to steer the narratives towards the principle of intellectual freedom and the critical role it plays in libraries and a democratic society. The six-member project team was honored as Library Journal’s 2023 Librarians of the Year (https://www.libraryjournal.com/story/news/) and also received Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas Award (https:// www.fastcompany.com/90871466/brooklyn-public-library-booksunbanned) and the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund’s 2023 Defender Award https://www.dramatistsguild.com/news/dramatists-legaldefense-). Brooklyn Public Library is among the borough’s most democratic civic institutions, serving patrons in every neighborhood and from every walk of life. Established in 1896, BPL is one of the nation’s largest public library systems and currently has more than 850,000 active cardholders. With a branch library within a half-mile of the majority of Brooklyn’s 2.7 million residents, BPL is a recognized leader in cultural offerings, literacy, out-of-school-time services, workforce development programs, and digital literacy.

2023.06.07 17:26 JohannGoethe Isocrates (2330A/-c.375), in Bousiris (Βούσιρις) (§:16-23), on the Egyptians

The following is Isocrates (2330A/-c.375) in his Bousiris (Βούσιρις) (§:16-23) talking about the warrior, worker, schooling divide system of Egypt, via reference to Bousiris, the Greek-defined mythical king of Egypt:
Greek Google Norlin (A25/1980)
[16] But when he found out the numbers from which he had commanded the commons, he ordered them to be treated with the same actions, seeing that those who had not been transferred to any one of the tasks, having them do these things continuously for staying being in excess of each other. [16] Including in all classes the right numbers for the best administration of the commonwealth, he gave orders that the same individuals should always engage in the same pursuits, because he knew that those who continually change their occupations never achieve proficiency in even a single one of their tasks, whereas those who apply themselves constantly to the same activities perform each thing they do surpassingly well.
[17] They argue also about the arts, let us now find them differing from those about these sciences or the other creators of private individuals, and about the constitution by which they preserve the kingdom and the other state, thus having as well as the philosophers the favors of the so they say, practicing and even thriving in the state of choice in Egypt, and the Lacedaemonians part of them, imitating them from there, they govern their city excellently. [17] Hence we shall find that in the arts the Egyptians surpass those who work at the same skilled occupations elsewhere more than artisans in general excel the laymen; also with respect to the system which enables them to preserve royalty and their political institutions in general, they have been so successful that philosophers who undertake to discuss such topics and have won the greatest reputation prefer above all others the Egyptian form of government, and that the Lacedaemonians, on the other hand, govern their own city in admirable fashion because they imitate certain of the Egyptian customs.
[18] And for the zero of the fighting without the opinion of the princes, and the sissies and the exercise of the bodies, because the zero of the necessary ones are neglected by the common commandments, they do not apply to the other arts, but to all and the armies, they pay attention to the mind, from there they take all these things. [18] For instance, the provision that no citizen fit for military service could leave the country without official authorization, the meals taken in common, and the training of their bodies; furthermore, the fact that lacking none of the necessities of life, they do not neglect the edicts of the State, and that none engage in any other crafts, but that all devote themselves to arms and warfare, all these practices they have taken from Egypt.
[19] And in such a way do these men give their hand to the adversaries, as long as they are at war with everyone, taking by force what others deserve, they live in this way as if they were their own, neglecting not to give advice to others. I don't know if they were worn by the various heads of the state. [19] But the Lacedaemonians have made so much worse use of these institutions that all of them, being professional soldiers, claim the right to seize by force the property of everybody else, whereas the Egyptians live as people should who neither neglect their own possessions, nor plot how they may acquire the property of others. The difference in the aims of the two polities may be seen from the following:
[20] For if we all imitate the avarice and avarice of the Lacedaemonians, even if we perish both because of the daily poverty and because of the war against us: but if we obey the laws of Egypt, and those who work, and those who of these they live in glory, each of them having it happily if we end our lives. [20] if we should all imitate the sloth and greed of the Lacedaemonians, we should straightway perish through both the lack of the necessities of daily life and civil war; but if we should wish to adopt the laws of the Egyptians which prescribe that some must work and that the rest must protect the property of the workers, we should all possess our own goods and pass our days in happiness.
τοῖς γὰρ ἱερεῦσι παρεσκεύασεν εὐπορίαν μὲν ταῖς ἐκ τῶν ἱερῶν [ieron] προσόδοις [prosodois], σωφροσύνην δὲ ταῖς ἁγνείαις ταῖς ὑπὸ τῶν νόμων προστεταγμέναις, σχολὴν [scholin] δὲ ταῖς ἀποθανεῖν: [21] And not even her about the caregiving judgment even if she thought of them for that reason [thought]. For to the priests he prepared euphoria with the holy revenues, and chastity to the chastities protected by the laws, and a school for them to die: [21] Furthermore, the cultivation of practical wisdom may also reasonably be attributed to Busiris. For example, he saw to it that from the revenues of the sacrifices the priests should acquire affluence, but self-control through the purifications prescribed by the laws, and leisure by exemption from the hazards of fighting and from all work.
[22a] μεθ᾽ ὧν ἐκεῖνοι βιοτεύοντες [viotévontes] [from: βιοτεύω?] τοῖς μὲν σώμασιν ἰατρικὴν ἐξεῦρον ἐπικουρίαν, οὐ διακεκινδυνευμένοις φαρμάκοις χρωμένην ἀλλὰ τοιούτοις, ἃ τὴν μὲν ἀσφάλειαν ὁμοίαν ἔχει τῇ τροφῇ τῇ καθ᾽ ἡμέραν, τὰς δ᾽ ὠφελείας τηλικαύτας ὥστ᾽ ἐκείνους ὁμολογουμένως ὑγιεινοτάτους εἶναι καὶ μακροβιωτάτους, [22a] with which those living with a body have medical help, not risky colored drugs, but such, which has the same safety as the food of the day, the d benefits are admittedly as those they are healthy and long-lived, [22a] And the priests, because they enjoyed such conditions of life, discovered for the body the aid which the medical art affords, not that which uses dangerous drugs, but drugs of such a nature that they are as harmless as daily food, yet in their effects are so beneficial that all men agree the Egyptians are the healthiest and most long of life among men;
[22b] too but the exercise of mental philosophy demonstrated that it is possible to legislate and to inquire into the nature of beings. [22b] and then for the soul they introduced philosophy's training, a pursuit which has the power, not only to establish laws, but also to investigate the nature of the universe.
[23] And he instructed the elders on the highest things, and the younger ones, neglecting the pleasures, on astrology and calculus and geometry, he persuaded them to dispel, whose powers the ones who are useful as one praise, those who are mostly as a symbol of virtue, they decide for me they attempt. [23] The older men Busiris appointed to have charge of the most important matters, but the younger he persuaded to forgo all pleasures and devote themselves to the study of the stars, to arithmetic, and to geometry; the value of these sciences some praise for their utility in certain ways, while others attempt to demonstrate that they are conducive in the highest measure to the attainment of virtue.
βίᾳ
The term “bia” (βίᾳ) [13], which is the root of terms such as “violence”, has previously been decoded, in the Abioism book, as a cipher for the 13th-hour of violence or battle when the Horus sun ☀️, after 12-hours of daylight, goes into battle with Set, i.e. sun-set, or sun-with-Set.
§:22b
In §:22a, we see a complex translation, in need of EAN analysis:
ταῖς δὲ ψυχαῖς [psychaís] φιλοσοφίας [filosofías] ἄσκησιν κατέδειξαν, ἣ καὶ νομοθετῆσαι [nomothetísai] καὶ τὴν φύσιν [physin] τῶν [ton] ὄντων [ónton] ζητῆσαι [zitísai] δύναται [dýnatai].
Google renders this as:
too but the exercise of mental philosophy demonstrated that it is possible to legislate and to inquire into the nature of beings.
George Norlin (A25/1980) renders this as:
and then for the soul they introduced philosophy's training, a pursuit which has the power, not only to establish laws, but also to investigate the nature of the universe.
ψυχαῖς [psychaís]
The term psychais (ψυχαῖς), shown rendered above as “mental” or “soul”, is a complex cipher.
The following decoding work on letter psi (ψ), the first letter of this term, shows that the actual Egyptian psi glyph was only recently found 5-months ago:
Whence, generally the term, at least with respect to the prefix psych- (ψυχ-), or psi (Orion something) + upsilon (choices you make naked) + chi (cosmos rebirth letter), crudely renders as what the Egyptians and Greeks though 💭 their mind was going to be like, in the after-existence, after they rise in the stars ✨ like the rising Orion constellation, or something along these lines.
φιλοσοφίας [filosofías]
While we have worked on this previously, Bernal, who Black Athena book I’m reading now, claims that he is going to decode this term from an “Egyptian etymology” basis; whence, we will have to come back to this.
φύσιν [physin]
That the term physin (φύσιν) is rendered both times as “nature”, is not fully clear translation. Previously, physics was worked on here:
Which gives a friction-starts-fire etymology of the first letter of the word.
ὄντων [ónton]
The term ὄντων [ónton], Google renders as “being”, and Wiktionary renders as:
masculine/neuter genitive plural of ὤν (ṓn) [850]
Which directs to:
present participle of εἰμί (eimí), meaning: “to be, exist, happen”; actual, real
This cipher has previously been worked on here:
The term on (ων) [850], as a combination of omega [800] and nu [50], overtly renders as “be”, but includes the following cyphers:
This might make Eleusis the “Greek Heliopolis” or city of the solar fire, or something; mixed with some type of cipher that one’s “being”, as we now call it, derives from the 🔥 of the sun god inside of one’s heart, or something crudely along these lines?
νομοθετῆσαι [nomothetísai]
The term Νομοθέτης, which renders as “lawgiver”, is from nomo- (νόμο-), from the Egyptian “nome”, referring to one of he 42 states or territories of Egypt, + -thétis (-θέτης), meaning: “setter” of “thet” (θέτ) [314], i.e. Biblos (βιβλος) [314], meaning: “book, letter”.
Bousiris §:28
The following is Bousiris (§:28), wherein Isocrates says that Pythagoras, after going to Egypt, came back and taught all of Greece the art of philosophy:
Greek Google Norlin (A25/1980)
[28] Behold, if they do not hasten them with haste, many will pass away marveling at their truthfulness, which neither I alone nor the first ever receive, but many of the beings and the ancestors, among whom is Pythagoras the Samian: who arrived in Egypt and was a disciple [pupil] of them, being born he first taught the other philosophy to the Greeks, and he studied the sacrifices and sanctities in the sanctuaries more prominently than the others, being an abbot, if for these things he was made no more than the gods, but then he gave them to men from let them prosper. If one were not determined to make haste, one might cite many admirable instances of the piety of the Egyptians, that piety which I am neither the first nor the only one to have observed; on the contrary, many contemporaries and predecessors have remarked it, of whom Pythagoras of Samos is one On a visit to Egypt he became a student of the religion of the people, and was first to bring to the Greeks all philosophy, and more conspicuously than others he seriously interested himself in sacrifices and in ceremonial purity, since he believed that even if he should gain thereby no greater reward from the gods, among men, at any rate, his reputation would be greatly enhanced.
Quotes
The following is:
“Greek literature of the fourth century reflects a widespread struggle to determine the character of true paideia; and within it Isocrates, the chief representative of rhetoric, personifies the classical opposition to Plato and his school. From this point on, the rivalry of philosophy and rhetoric, each claiming to be the better form of culture, runs like a leitmotiv throughout the history of ancient civilization. It is impossible to describe every phase of that rivalry: for one thing, it is rather repetitious, and the leaders of its opposing sides are not always very interesting personalities. All the more important, therefore, is the conflict between Plato and Isocrates—the first battle in the centuries of war between philosophy and rhetoric. Later, that war was sometimes to degenerate into a mere academic squabble, in which neither side possessed any genuine vital force; but at its beginning the combatant parties represented the truly moving forces and needs of the Greek people. The field on which it was waged lay in the very centre of the political scene. That is what gives it the vivid colouring of a truly historical event, and the large sweep which keeps our interest in it permanently alive. In retrospect, we realize that in this conflict are symbolized the essential problems of that whole period of Greek history. Today as of old, Isocrates has, like Plato, his admirers and exponents; and there is no doubt that since the Renaissance he has exercised a far greater influence on the educational methods _ of humanism than any other Greek or Roman teacher. Historically, it is perfectly correct to describe him (in the phrase used on the title-page of several modern books) as the father of humanistic culture’—inasmuch as the sophists cannot really claim that title, and from our own pedagogic methods and ideals a direct line runs back to him, as it does to Quintilian and Plutarch.“
— Werner Jaeger (16A/1939), Paideia: the ideals of Greek culture (pg. 46)
The following is Martin Bernal on Isocrates:
“Isocrates portrayed Bousiris as a mythical lawgiver and to the perfection of the constitution he had devised for Egypt. Isokrates admired the caste system, the rulership of the philosophers, and the rigour of the Egyptian philosophepriests' paideia (education) that produced the anir theoritikos (contemplative man), who used his superior wisdom for the good of his state [Bousiris §:16-23]. The division of labour allowed a 'leisure', schole, which allowed for schok 'learning'. Above all, he insisted that philosophia (philosophy) was, and could only have been, a product of Egypt [Bousiris §:28]. This word seems to have been used by the Egyptianizing Pythagoreans for some time — possibly since the 6th century — but one of its earliest extant uses comes from Bousiris.”
— Martin Bernal (A32/1987), Black Athena (pg. 104)
Notes
  1. I started this post, per the Bernal quote, wherein he says that Isocrates, in section 16-23, of Bousiris, uses the word “paideia (παιδεια) [111]”.
  2. I do not, however, find the term “paideia” in Bousiris section 16-13? This is an example of poor or misleading citation. Isocrates, however, does, as Jaeger points out, use paideia, extensively, somewhere?

2023.06.07 17:07 bessiemucho Evaporator Coil Leak in 3 year old Lennox XC-20 system-Southeast Louisiana

This may not be right forum to post this, and if so mods delete. Its kind of a rant and includes a question about pricing, so roast me if you must.
I installed a new Lennox Seer 22 XC-20-048 system in my house in New Orleans in 2020. The company I purchased from is large and advertises constantly in the area. I chose this system because the condensing unit is 18" from my bedroom window is almost silent and allows me to sleep at night. I paid an exorbitant price but the silent condenser was worth it to me. Its worked perfectly for 3 years until last weekend.
At installation I bought the lifetime labor warranty ($250) plus the annual maintenance plan. I change the return air filter on a regular basis. In 2022 I failed to renew the maintenance plan and that's on me, I just forgot to follow up with renewal. Three weeks ago I called the vendor and had them do a pre-summer system check and renewed the maintenance plan. Everything checked out fine. That was May 11.
Last Saturday the house started getting hot and by Sunday was 85 degrees inside with the unit running constantly. I called the company all weekend and finally got a call back Monday morning. Same tech who did the maintenance last month came out and told me that the evaporator coil had a leak and needed to be replaced. I asked if it could be repaired and said no the whole unit need to be replaced and it was under 10 yr warranty and they had one in stock. However, the labor cost for replacing it would be $3000. Just a flat fee, no hourly rate or breakdown.
I thought the labor would be covered under Lifetime labor warranty I bought, but was told that the lifetime labor was no longer valid because I let the maintenance plan lapse for 1 year, even though I had just renewed it 3 weeks before.
At that point I wanted to see if I could get other quotes to compare the price, but it was unbearable inside so I told him to fix it. He went to get the coil at 11, came back at noon and was gone by 3:00 p.m.
I know that price is relative to markets and the system, but is $3000 reasonable to change out an evaporator coil?
The tech was quick and fixed it that same day but I still feel I was gouged on the price, mainly because i have nothing to compare.
I tried to call a manager at the company to ask about the coil failing in this high end system just after 3 years but nobody seems interested in calling me back. Tech said he didn't like Lennox products and personally would have bought a different system. I'm going to contact Lennox customer service and rant to them as well.

Hey, I am new to PC building and decided to challenge myself with my next PC and do everything myself (except for some advice from you guys of course)! During the last couple of weeks, I spent some time researching parts and looking through an unholy amount of benchmarks and review-videos and I think I found some good parts that should work well together. This PC is strictly for gaming and daily use, so no rendering and stuff. I do have a budget of 1.5k but am ready to spend more if needed. Future-proofing and upgradability is important for me. What do you guys think about this build?

2023.06.07 16:30 khoafraelich789 THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS DRIVING A ‘STUBBORN’ INDY 500 RETURNEE

THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS DRIVING A ‘STUBBORN’ INDY 500 RETURNEE

https://preview.redd.it/7jxyl7oyh63b1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=245c7be6ece16ffbeb98c221c2255c96d6117728
Even though she tries to make an Indianapolis 500 return happen every year, after 10 years away you may have been forgiven for assuming Katherine Legge wouldn’t get another chance at the race.

But the driver who has driven everything from a Formula 1 car (with Minardi) to Formula E, NASCAR and the DeltaWing design that started life as an IndyCar concept and became a Le Mans racer has never, ever given up on the goal of getting back to the Brickyard.

And most importantly of all, she should get the chance in a competitive car this time with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team.

“If I’d been honest with myself, I probably would have thought, OK, you haven’t got that many good years left in you racing-wise,” the 42-year-old tells The Race in an exclusive interview.

“So if it’s not going to happen in the next sort of three or four years then it’s not going to happen. But I didn’t think of it like that, right?

“I just kept trying, I’m stubborn, and there’s no give up in me.

“So, I’m still fit, I’m still race-ready, it’s not like I’ve not been racing, I just haven’t been in an open-wheel car, and I will have a lot of time [to test].

“So I think that it’s going to be great, honestly.

“I was joking with [team co-owner] Bobby [Rahal], I had an opportunity to drive the F1 car back in 2006 and for a few years after that I was thinking I was going to make it to F1. So I said, ‘I’m pretty sure that dream is dead!’

“But I still think that I’ve got a certain amount to achieve and this year things seem to be turning around for me a little bit in that.”

Legge’s diverse CV makes it extremely difficult to say with absolute certainty how good she is as a driver relative to her peers. But there’s no doubt there’s unfinished business when it comes to the 500.

LEGGE’S CV
2014-2023 – IMSA, second in GT class in 2018
2021 – WEC – three races with IronLynx, finished eighth in class in all three
2018 – NASCAR Xfinity – four races with JD Motorsport, best finish 14th at Road America
2014 – Formula E – two races with Amlin Aguri, best finish 15th
2013 – 26th in the Indy 500
2012 – 26th in IndyCar, best finish ninth – Lotus-Dragon Racing
2010 – 18th in DTM
2009 – 18th in DTM
2008 – 19th in DTM
2007 – 15th in Champ Car – Dale Coyne Racing
2006 – 16th in Champ Car – PKV Racing
2005 – 3rd in Toyota Atlantic Championship – Polestar

Her 2012 debut was as part of the laughable Lotus-Dragon programme, in a season where Lotus was far behind Chevrolet and Honda and would leave the championship at the end of the year. Lotus and Dragon split before that – so Legge did get a Chevrolet engine for the 500 and beyond, as did team-mate Sebastien Bourdais, but it was put in the car in the week before the race!

The 2013 attempt with Schmidt Peterson was in machinery that managed a top-10 with Simon Pagenaud that year, but Legge had no testing in the lead up to her second attempt.

“I think I’ve never really – in IndyCar at least – been in great equipment,” Legge adds.

“So I think a lot of people kind of wrote me off because of that. But Bobby obviously hasn’t thankfully.”

You may also like...

Asked about the trade-off between being so passionate about contesting the event again versus wanting to get the machinery she feels she can win the race in, Legge adds: “There’s always a part of you that wants to do it and you think, ‘OK, I can make the difference’. But there’s different levels of opportunity, isn’t there?

“Like there’s the absolute worst, which happened to me in 2012 with Dragon in all honesty, we had the Lotus engine and we had to make the switch [to a Chevrolet engine] during race week, we had no testing, never been to Indy before and it was just a big nightmare.

“And then there’s the next year with Schmidt where I had a great car but no running on the lead-up to it but still was massively grateful for that opportunity.

“I think if you have a good car that’s most of the battle, but everything else means a lot as well. So I wasn’t going to do it if it wasn’t in a good team, I would say, because the team makes the difference.

“You can have a mediocre driver do well in a good car but a good driver can’t make a mediocre car shine. Like, if you put [Scott] Dixon in that Dragon Lotus he wasn’t going to win it either way, it just depends on the situation and I kept fighting for a good situation.

“Honestly, this is a dream situation. Rahal has made so many – upgrades, shall I say – in the last year since they did Indy before, and they’ve got a different philosophy now and they’ve got on board a bunch of people.

“They were a great team before and now they’ve got this kind of Arrow [McLaren] F1 work ethic, they think we’re going to really shine at this year’s 500.

“It feels like everybody’s pulling in the right direction there so I’m hoping that this is as good an opportunity that we would ever get honestly.”

Like with Legge, there’s a bit of uncertainty around what to expect from Rahal in 2023. That might sound bizarre given the team won this race in 2020 with Takuma Sato and had a very good chance to follow that up in 2021 before a wheel came off after Graham Rahal’s pitstop.

But in 2022, the team was not at the races. Amid management changes and pursuing a set-up idea down a rabbit warren, the whole year was a huge backwards step and RLL wasn’t its competitive self.

However, it’s added a host of personnel including ex-Red Bull and McLaren engineer Stefano Sordo as technical director, and there’s positivity the team can find the light at the end of the tunnel even if the Thermal test at the start of this year brought a few issues with two of its cars.

With Legge and the Rahal team you get the feeling that there’s something to prove.

You may also like...

Legge’s extremely determined, whether that’s to shut a few onlookers up about whether she has earned this chance based on her results in other series – you can hardly make a proper judgement on her previous Indy 500 outings! – or perhaps to prove to herself that she is in fact as good as she thinks she is and earn the vindication.

Whatever the reasoning, it’s a great opportunity. And what shouldn’t be ignored for those who are unsure as to why Legge got this seat is that it is one with sponsorship that Bobby Rahal could have pretty much given to hundreds of drivers. It’s not insignificant that he has trusted Legge with this chance.

Given that Legge hasn’t driven a single-seater since feeling out the Formula 3 car W Series was testing before it started in 2019, a series Legge eventually decided not to enter or visibly support despite getting a place on the grid, and the last time she’d raced a single-seater was in Formula E when the cars weren’t much quicker than Formula Fords back in 2014, Indy will be a big challenge.

Driving the DeltaWing – which she said was one of the closest things to the IndyCar – or the LMP2 car used in the European Le Mans Series is about as close as recent experience allows.

Legge also broke her leg and her wrist in a 2020 ELMS testing crash, which all but ended that year of racing.

IMSA has been Legge’s home since 2014, with 2018 being the peak when she helped Meyer Shank to second place in the GTD class.

2022 was a part-year and the second in a Porsche, but she is excited about a return to Honda/Acura this year and took fourth in class in an NSX GT3 at Daytona last month.

It’s so hard to judge a driver from GT results given the car is being shared, but Legge’s best lap at Daytona was only 0.2s off that of team-mate Mario Farnbacher, a two-time GTD-class champion in IMSA.

Unfortunately, heading into Turn 1 at Indy at 240mph is a different challenge – but luckily not one totally alien to Legge.

Legge won’t get any race outings to prepare, but will have a test at Texas and a two-day test at Indianapolis itself before the four days of collective testing in the lead-up to qualifying, and significant time in HPD’s simulator in Indiana has also been arranged to help the transition.

As you would expect in line with anyone going back to ovals, Legge also altered her training some time ago to work more on the upper body, to get it ready for the rigours and g-forces of the Brickyard.

Legge will certainly be a popular starter in 2023, 10 years after her last go at the Indy 500, and the fact she’s got this opportunity after that decade should be inspiration to other drivers out there who might think their dream career chances are gone for good.

2023.06.07 14:59 ArdentPurple 31 [M4F] NY/Online - Creative writer and extreme introvert looking for gamer gals and passionate nerds (long post!)

Hello (and thanks for reading!),
I am a creative nerd, asocial hermit, and walking stereotype of the melancholic struggling artist.
I guess that doesn't sound great, but I would also like to believe that I am a great friend, attentive listener, problem solver, and quite emotionally intelligent. I am educated (master's degree), self-employed as a freelance writer (I have some goals this year I hope I have the courage and energy to shoot for), and love to make people laugh. My primary "love languages" include quality time, words of affirmation, and physical touch. I want to spend time with you (and give you space), tell you how great you are (without patronizing), and hold your hand and stuff (maybe touch your butt).
Look, dating hasn't been going great these past few years - I wouldn't say I have any horror stories, but it is difficult to find that genuine connection for my balance of grounded, quirky, shy, anxious, fun-loving, creative, loving, and occasional self-loathing that I embody. In terms of typical qualities, I gotta be honest: I'm not an ambitious, travel-loving, type-A grindset kind of guy. I'm a comfortable bug, happy at home or walking in empty spaces with music in my ears, listening to my friends' problems and then watching shows or playing games with them online, looking forward to cooking something simple yet tasty so I can have leftovers the next day kind of guy. I think I can be exciting and challenging, and I'm willing to do a lot for a person I like but you probably won't find a jet-setting whirlwind romance here, sorry.
In terms of hobbies, I love learning about history, cooking, trivia, engineering projects, scientific discoveries, how things work, why things are the way they are. I play a lot of games in my free time, and I'd like to play games with you (although the sweaty PvP ones I might sit out unless we REALLY hit it off). I collect and read tabletop RPGs and board games, and enjoy comics and webcomics as well. Of course I watch shows and often the same shows - I would really enjoy introducing some of my favorites to you. In general I am very passionate about discussing the little nerdy intricacies of things that I am into and in equal measure I'd love to hear you geek out about your favorite stuff as well. My taste in music covers the entire gamut but my top most-played for 2022 included a lot of theatrical rock, shoegaze, prog/jazz fusion, indie pop, and heavy metal/hardcore - I wish I went to more concerts. Horror movies are cool but I'll watch anything if there is someone to talk to during. I don't write much as a hobby these days since doing it for work but running a good tabletop game will get me motivated in a heartbeat.
I also have a cute little chihuahua/terrier who is afraid that every stranger wants to ruin her life, I exercise regularly, and I enjoy hiking/biking/bouldering for more active activities.
Socially, I am very introverted. I'm not interested in meeting strangers (present post excluded, of course), I need my time alone every now and then, and if there's a lot of socialization I will need to like... take a breather for a bit and that's cool, no biggie. I get anxious when I have to talk on the phone, I dread long checkouts at the grocery store, and I am not pleased having my picture taken (although I'll be a good sport about it). I'm very gregarious and jolly with my friends or close-knit groups, but I wanted to make this clear because I have met some people who really don't understand that like, no, I do not want to go to this thing or that event just to meet people or be stuck in rooms with strangers. Please be okay with that. I promise your parents will love me, though (if you get along with them).
Physically, I must apologize on my behalf - I am excessively average in appearance. 5'8", brown haibrown eyes, dad bod although I have been working consistently to reach a more fit figure and would consider that a realistic goal for me. I have a big bushy beard and looong hair down to my tailbone, although I have no particular attachment to it and would let any potential future partner have a strong voice on if it stays or if it goes. I've never tried to dress for anyone else but myself - I tend to wear a lot of grey or earth-tone khaki pants, button-down shirt over t-shirt, and a jacket if it is cold. I might have a suit stashed away somewhere but if I do we're gonna have to tailor that bad boy before busting it out. If you like the "hairy soft bod" trope I think you're in luck, haha.
Your pic gets mine, as they say.
What am I looking for, exactly? Well, dating in the traditional sense has never been my cup of tea - I guess I've never really done much of anything in the traditional sense, for better or worse. I want us to be friends, to get to know each other and spend time together talking or sharing activities and hopefully we start swapping food pics and outfit selfies and shots of places we visit and it becomes difficult to go to sleep because we're each trying to be the last to say "goodnight" and then we realize that damn, we really enjoy each other's company and should really talk about getting serious with it - like, go out and shit. Slap a label on that sucker. I hope you are the kind of cozy homebody nerd or super badass action chick gets along well with cozy nerds who wants to forge a genuine connection. If you're local we can still go on traditional dates for pizza and museums and stuff too of course but I don't mind a long-distance thing either. If the feelings are forged, we'll make it work.
As an admittedly average unfashionable dad-bod guy I know I don't have much place to make physical demands of people but in that department I would hope you are some form of HWP or on the way there, aaand... gosh, that's it really. I'm trying hard to be healthy - I would want to be with someone who feels the same.
So, hey! I know this is a lot but I wanted to paint a genuine portrait of where I am coming from and what I am looking for. I'm not a difficult person and it's easy to say hi to me, although I perform my best with some sort of prompt to go off of. Seriously, ask me stuff - I love answering questions and will be sure to follow up with some for you! Tell me a bit about yourself, what's a hobby you're happy with and what's a hobby you wish you could explore more or had more friends to share it with?

2023.06.07 14:19 Gangiskhan Artist #106 My Morning Jacket

Bio from The Festival Voice
Artist Biography by Daniel Karasek
My Morning Jacket is an artful indie rock outfit that started in 1998 and is led by Jim James (birth name James Olliges). The band is based out of James’ hometown of Louisville. They released their debut album The Tennessee Fire in 1999 via Darla Records. The album was moderately popular in the U.S. but became a sensation overseas, especially in the Netherlands. My Morning Jacket then launched a European tour and got loads of press from Dutch media. In 2001, they released At Dawn which won over their audience at home. Jim recorded his vocals in a grain silo that gave his vocals a reverb-heavy sound. Two years later the band signed with ATO Records for their release of It Still Moves followed by their 2005 album Z. In 2008, Evil Urges emerged to push the boundaries of alternative country rock. The members of My Morning Jacket then spent a few years pursuing solo projects before coming back together in 2011 for the album Circuital which was recorded in a church’s gymnasium. After more extensive touring with the likes of Bob Dylan and Wilco, My Morning Jacket released their 2015 album The Waterfall. During the creation of this album, the band recorded enough material for two albums but didn’t release the extra songs until 2020. In this five-year gap, the band was mostly on hiatus with the members pursuing various solo projects. After playing a run of four shows in 2019, My Morning Jacket was inspired to come back to the studio to self-produce the 2021 album My Morning Jacket. In 2022, the band released live show albums drawn from their archives and an EP Live from RCA Studio A which featured a solo acoustic performance by Jim James.

2023.06.07 12:41 Meaning-Plenty O’ Pir Panchal

After remaining invincible and impregnable for centuries, the mighty Pir Panchal is witnessing enormous developmental activity for a new expressway, a challenging railway line and most of the dam-fed hydropower projects involving an investment of tens of thousands of crores. At places, this is triggering the fragile range to cave in at the cost of homes and livelihoods of age-old villages, a situation that experts believe could have been avoided with better pre-feasibility studies and sophisticated project implementation, reports Masood Hussain
Anticipated for years, finally, the increased incidence of land subsidence and sinking in the Pir Panchal Mountains is Jammu and Kashmir’s new normal. The young fragile and unstable mountain range separating Kashmir from the rest of the world is in news frequently as the slopes housing small habitations for centuries are caving in.
On February 19, 2023, around 16 structures of Duksar Dalwa (Duksar Dal), a hamlet almost 45 km uphill from Ramban, suffered serious damage as the land caved in. It crippled road connectivity between Gool and Ramban where almost 500 meters developed cracks, tripped the electric supply and snapped the water supply. Three homes developed cracks forcing authorities to shift the impacted population to safer areas.
Officials said while they are working overtime to resume power and water supplies, they are also improving the Dharam-Salballa road to make it an alternative supply route to the “literally disconnected” area. In the sinking village, the official encouraged the residents to move swiftly to safer spots. For residents, however, the gradual 3-day sinking was a painful watch of their life earnings slowly cracking up and becoming black holes over hills.
It started with a crater that widened to almost 500 meters during two nights, making almost everything around unsafe, unstable and life-threatening. A mosque, Darsgah, the village seminary and the village graveyard were destroyed. Residents quickly exhumed a recently buried body and laid it to rest at a “safe” place.
Officials who visited the spot said the village’s agriculture fields were rendered useless, pushing residents into poverty. They lost homes and their livelihoods too.
The Duksar erasing came less than a fortnight after Doda lost a cluster of houses to a similar instance on February 3, 2023. Located on the foothills on the road to Kishtwar near Thathri, nearly 35 km from Doda, the volunteers, residents and government officials had to quickly shift 117 members of 19 families as the patch of slope housing the Nai Basti cluster gave in within three days. A total of 21 structures cracked and became unsafe.
Horrific Tunnel Collapse
The last horrific tragedy took place on May 19, 2022, when the workers were digging into an adit (minor access to the T3 tunnel) near Khooni Nalla at Ramsu’s Makerkot area. It collapsed over them killing ten workers including two local residents and eight Nepalese labourers. The tragedy struck during the day amid incessant rain but still, only two persons could be rescued alive.
The workers were on the challenging stretch of the national highway between Digdole and Khooni Nallah, which is otherwise notorious for frequent landslides and shooting stones due to fragile geology. It was part of the twin-tube tunnel that would connect Digdole to Panthyal and was implemented by Ceigall India Limited in a JV with Patel Engineering Limited. (The contractor has been imposed a heavy fine.)
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) that has taken over the Jammu Srinagar national highway from Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a few years back, is constructing at least five tunnels to bypass the highway’s 3-km “killer’’ stretch from Panthyal to Makerkote. Tunnel T3 is part of this intervention.
Unlike the rest of the highway, the 36-km Banihal Ramban stretch has been the most challenging one and that is why it is still under implementation. On this stretch are six “killer spots” located on a 14-km road stretch and NHAI intends to spend Rs 2000 crore to manage this. Implementation of this would offer some safety from frequent halts owing to shooting stones at Marog, Panthial, Digdol and Battery Chashma.
Triggering Instability
Implementation of these projects is triggering crises for the localities living around them. As many as 13 houses in Sujmatana village near Ramsu were literally devastated. The round-the-clock blasting for the tunnel projects and cutting work made these houses inhospitable after they developed cracks. Most of them have left their unsafe homes and migrated elsewhere. Though officials are looking into the crisis since 2017, it is yet to be settled.
On August 4, 2022, 36 families had a providential escape when their Bassan village in Reasi became the casualty of sinking and erosion at the same time. Without any notice, landslides carried down boulders and muck that crashed the houses and put the agriculture fields out of sight. It was so abrupt, villages said, that they had no time to take their belongings along.
Officials admitted that almost 60 kanals of land sank as another 400 kanals patch was rendered useless. Almost all the fruit trees, mostly walnut and apricot, were engulfed in mud. Almost 200 meters of a PMGSY road was also downthrown by around 25 meters from its actual alignment.
The earlier worst case was reported from Dalwas when on March 28, 2020, the residents fled when their homes and fields were literally buried by landslides. Almost 40 households were impacted.
The village has been there for ages and never experienced any such threat. Then one day it literally disappeared. Residents alleged that being away from Srinagar and Jammu, deep into the mountains they hardly were reported. At one point in time when they wanted to protest, authorities invoked Covid19 concerns to prevent it.
Response Protocol
Over the years, the government response has remained unchanged. Once the reports land that spots are sinking, they as the first quick reaction, send cops, paramilitary, SDRF and revenue officials to oversee and, in most cases, extend help in quick evacuations. In stage two, the respective Deputy Commissioner writes to geologists and the Department of Geology and Mining and, off late, to the Geological Survey of India, who rush their experts to these spots. In the subsequent few days, they study the local rock formations and submit reports, part of which goes to newspapers and by and large the files get closed.
At the same time, files start rolling about relief and rehabilitation. It takes its own time. In many cases, people who lose their homes and livelihoods are yet to be properly rehabilitated.
Invariably, the policymakers and the administrators avoid two vital ingredients of the story – the assessments that the local populations make about the crisis they land in and the wider angle that remains unchanged across the Pir Panchal range.
Resident Assessments
Affected populations are unwilling to accept that these crises are natural. They see them as man-made disasters. Raqeeb Wani, a former Sarpanch of Daskar Dalwa told The Telegraph that his village’s erasing is directly linked to the construction of two railway tunnels downhill, that would link a 3km rail track between Sangaldan and Chaddi. He attributed it to the “continuous blasting” that loosens the soil and adds to the instability of the mountain.
“A few years ago, we had a similar disaster in Sangaldan a few years ago when an entire market caved in,” Wani was quoted as saying. “That also was owing to the railway project.”
In the case of Dalwas, for instance, a former lawmaker from Ramban Ashok Kumar Dogra said the “unscientific planning” of the widening of the national highway is responsible. “The highway authorities started excavation of the road from beneath the village without raising any wall on the side of the village. As no concrete measures were taken by the NHAI to protect the village and debris was also disposed of at the same place, the tragedy was bound to happen and the houses collapsed and the village sank,” Dogra told Outlook. “I will not call it a natural disaster. It was the unplanned construction that destabilised the soil of the whole area, leading to its sinking.”
Right to A Road
Pir Panchal mountain range has remained literally invincible and technically impregnable for centuries. It took decades of thought process and a lot of resources to lay a foot track between Jammu and Srinagar, to have an alternative to Mughal Road. Known to history as the Banihal Cart Road, it was difficult and always retained by Dogra despots as a private route. It remained inaccessible to people till 1922. Till the Jawahar Tunnel was inaugurated, the road would pass over the Banihal pass, the abandoned remnants of which still exist.
This made Kashmir rely on the Jhelum Valley Road (JVR) as the main highway.
Almost 225 residents from 48 households who somehow survived the tragedy moved to another village and are still struggling to pick the threads of their lives. Though life has returned to the village, they are still fighting for an electric supply line and the rebuilding of the school building.
An Upcoming Railway
The road is just not the only thing that is happening deep inside the Pir Panchal mountain range. While the road is being upgraded, there is a railway project in an advanced stage of implementation.
Unlike the road that is being laid over the foothills not far away from the old alignment that also followed a foot track of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the railway track is passing through a virgin area, part of which has not seen even a bus. For making rail reach Baramulla from Udhampur, the 272-km project is going to cost a whopping Rs 37012 crore of which more than ninety per cent has already been spent.
Work on JVR started in 1880 and was formally thrown open in September 1890, when Maharaja Partap Singh was driven through from Baramulla to Kohala. The construction of this gigantic road project was implemented by a major British Indian contractor M/S Spedding, Mitchell & Co and was overseen by different British engineers at different stretches. While General de Bourbel oversaw everything as the Chief Engineer Kashmir, it was Alexander Atkinsonmanagedmost of the road up to Chakoti (on the other side of LoC now) and a few parts on the Kashmir side; Farrant was in charge of construction between Chakotiand Baramulla; as EG Hebbert supervised its completion in November 1889. Resources apart, it cost too many lives. Between Chakoti and Baramulla, 54 Pathans were killed in four years. Besides, 20 lives were lost to snake bites.
Post-partition, the Banihal Road became arterial and pressure built with a surge in population and demand in Kashmir. For seven decades, this road bore the brunt of all the pressures of travel, demand and consumerism and gave in. The rise of the Kashmir apple added another pressure factor so did the security requirements.
Finally, a stage reached that the health of the national highway was directly linked to the economic well-being of Kashmir. This paved the way for the decision by the Government of India that distances need to be reduced and the highway must be improved so that commuters do not end up spending a day on a 300-km highway.
More than a decade after the first spadework, it is emerging as one of the best roads. There are three major tunnels that have skipped dangerous patches while reducing distance and uphill driving: a set of four small tunnels near Nandni with a combined length of 1.4 km; 9.2 km Chenani-Nashri tunnel has bypassed a gruelling uphill drive and 8.5 km Banihal-Qazigund tunnel is going to tame dangerous Banihal Pass forever.
Distance has dropped from 300 to 270 km and the travel time from 12 to around 5 hours. But the Banihal-Ramban stretch remains a challenge. Earlier, it was merely a technological crisis, now it is a serious ecological issue.
These villagers were fortunate in comparison to the Sadal hamlet of Udhampur which was buried under a massive mudslide at noon on September 6, 2014. Following incessant rains for many days, it triggered massive floods in Kashmir and the rest of the erstwhile state. As many as 41 residents from 65 households were killed by the wee hour mountain collapse that brought an almost 30-foot-thick blanket of rafted rock fragments mud, sludge and rubble.
The rail is already chugging between Udhampur and Katra (25 km) since July 2014, Baramulla to Qazigund (118 km) since October 2009; and Qazigund to Baramulla (18 km) since June 2013. This leaves the most challenging stretch of 111 km between Banihal and Katra to be implemented.
However, the cost of the track does not define the project. It is the work that details the challenge. Nearly 119 km of the entire track will pass through 38 tunnels, the longest of which is 12.77 km long.
What is interesting is that in the 111-km Banihal – Katra track, 97.42 km are tunnels and most of the rest are bridges. Railway officials have to do 163.82 km of tunnelling in total – 66.4 km are escape tunnels – to make the track possible. For making these tunnel spots accessible to men and machines, there is a network of 205 km of roads, which remain busy round the clock.
This track will have 37 bridges – totalling 7 km in length, including the iconic Chenab Bridge, which is tipped to be the highest railway bridge on earth. While this bridge is ready, the current focus is on the first cable-stayed railway bridge on Anji Khad.
With thousands of people working deep inside the mountains with basic cutting and blasting machinery a lot of activity is generated.
There were dozens of instances in which the portions of various tunnels collapsed resulting in either changing the alignment or repairing the damage and restoring the tunnel. In July 2006, an almost 3 km long tunnel on the Udhampur-Katra track gradually started sinking after massive soil swelling on the two ends making it unusable and thus delaying the project. Northern Railways later hired an Austrian consultant, Geo Consult International (GCI), to salvage the project after many years of delay. The causes of the damage were visible to even the then Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said he saw “a river flowing under the tunnel”.
A number of tunnels between Katra and Sangaldan witnessed “abnormal” water discharge making construction a challenging task. In Sangladan, the managers were shocked when they saw a 500-meter track between two tunnels actually missing one fine morning. Reported in 2006, it destroyed a vast stretch of land on a slope housing as many as 100 structures besides over 400 meters of the road connecting Mahore and Gulabgarh.
In 2016 summer of 2016, authorities shifted 124 families – almost the entire village of Dharam, after the vast patch of land that housed the hamlet caved in within three months. Though the officials attributed it to natural reasons, the residents linked the unprecedented situation to the ongoing work on the railway line passing close to the village.
Oceans In Gorges
Piercing the Pir Panchal mountains for smooth, faster and better communication is just not the only thing happening in the region. Owing to the mighty Chenab, the region is Jammu and Kashmir’s powerhouse. More than 90 per cent of the hydropower potential is restricted to the region owing to the availability of water and enough space to construct dams within the mountain gorges. This has led to a situation where the region holds a massive amount of water in its dams.
The region’s tryst with power generation started late last century with the implementation of the 900-MW Salal power project in Reasi in 1978. The project’s 1.45 million cubic meter dam has created the Salal lake which has the capacity to retain more than 28 million cubic meters of water.
Then came the 390-MW Dul-Hasti Power Project near Kishtwar. It was followed by the 900-MW Baglihar power with 1.8 cubic meters of the dam and an additional reservoir capacity of 39.5 cubic meters – a facility that has created a huge water body in the mountain gorges between Chanderkote belt and Thathri to the extent that certain localities and infrastructures had to be relocated. Quite a few people still live in the highway town of Pul Doda.
The region has many other power projects at different stages of implementation. These include 850-MW Rattle, 100-MW Pakal Dul, 624-MW Kiru, 540-MW Kwar, 800-MW Bursar, and 930-MW Kirthai-II. This is an investment of tens of thousands of crore in mountain gorges on a single river within a river length of fewer than 100 km.
Baglihar is the only project that Jammu and Kashmir’s fully-owned JKSPDC owns. Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd, a joint venture between JKSPDC and NHPC, India’s hydropower giant, is implementing four power projects – Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar and Karthia-II. Salal and Dul Hasti owned fully by NHPC and Ratle is being executed under a fresh JV with JKSPDC in which the latter holds 49 per cent stakes.
Stakes apart, hydropower stations are gigantic projects. These need huge spaces for water storage – even in the case of run-of-the-river schemes, and a lot of tunnelling. All projects have main tunnels, both head race and tail race, and then there are a lot of additional adits and small tunnels for servicing. Even though most of the tunnels and the dams are concrete structures, having such critical infrastructure usually triggers soil erosion and soil swellings too often. The 110-km Batote Kishtwar road has been ailing for all these years. Never in a year could it operate for all 365 days.
Cause versus Consequence?
Science has fundamentally opposed the idea of correlating causes with consequences especially when there is no plausible explanation. In the case of the Pir Panchal region, however, there are striking correlations. For most of recent history, land sliding has been happening around the national highway only. However, in the last decade, land subsidence is a routine and it is happening at all places where developmental activities are going on.
Bhaderwah town and its surroundings are witnessing “region-exclusive” tremors almost every year. In August 2022, there were 21 tremors, reaching up to 3.9 on the Richter scale. Such summer tremors have been there in 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In fact, 2013 was harrowing as the earthquakes touched 5.8 on the Richter scale.
Land patches are caving in at spots closer to some kind of major developmental activity. This is as true with railway projects as it is in road widening projects. Certain spots caved in because works were implemented without a detailed study.
In Sangaldan, for instance, when the railway track collapsed, it was pointed out by geologist Prof GM Bhat that it had been built “on a fossil slide”, which failed to withstand the weight and crumbled down. “We knew it for decades but we were never consulted,” Bhat said. “In this part of the Himalayas, rock types change after every half a kilometre.”
A respected geologist, Bhat insists that developmental activities can take place in any space that is as fragile as Pir Panchal but it needs adequate pre-implementation study and proper implementation mechanism.
“In the four-laning of the highway, the crisis would have been manageable had there been least vertical cuts,” Bhat said. “Impounding so much of water (in power projects dams) within a small patch has the potential of inducing earthquakes.” He insists that the managers of the water projects must ensure better maintenance of the tunnels or these could become a serious crisis in future.
Bhat, however, sees society also going unruly. “In Banihal near the Mahu Mangat side, a hillock is a completely populated town now,” he said. “Has anybody tried to verify where the waste goes? Are we expecting a major crisis in the coming days when the hill will cave in because of seepage?”
The region is a risky belt given its fragile geology. The upcoming railway line is built over three major active geological fault lines: the Main Boundary Thrust (between Udhampur and Katra), the Muree Thrust (between Baglihar and Sangaldan) and the Panjal Thrust (between Digdol and Mahu Mangat). “I never say railway tracks cannot cross fault lines but I believe that had local expertise been involved, extensive fieldwork would have reduced the costs and perfected the alignment”. Entire Jammu and Kashmir is classified as seismic zone-V, the highest earthquake-prone area. CAG has already done a thick report on the resources that were wasted because of the geological surprises that erupted after various rail projects were implemented. Parts of the alignment were changed and completed works were abandoned.
A fault line actually passes through the centre of the Baghlihar dam and most other reservoirs are very close to the fault lines underneath. “A dam burst will be worse than the earthquake itself,” Bhat, who retired recently after heading the University of Jammu’s Geology Department for a long time, said. Interestingly, the area is reporting an increased incidence of cloudbursts, seen as an indicator of climate change. “One major cloudburst near a dam can trigger unprecedented devastation.”
One such cloudburst on July 28, 2021, almost decimated Honzer, a hamlet concealed within inaccessible mountains of remote Dacchan, killing 26 residents. The bodies of almost 18 of the victims were never found.
Many geologists who studied Dalwa fall attributed the land subsidence to water seepage, and extensive cutting of steep slopes. They have suggested a robust urban land use plan, a prerequisite for any activity, especially in hilly areas.

2023.06.07 09:53 RedSquirrel17 Is 'Jeanne du Barry' Really A Box Office Success?

You may have seen some entertainment outlets last week hailing Jeanne du Barry's apparent financial success.
Johnny Depp's 'Jeanne du Barry' enjoys decade-best start for a Cannes opener at French box office
The Hollywood Reporter
Eric Marti, from industry analysts Comscore France, believes the film could reach 850,000 admissions by the end of its theatrical run.
French distributor Le Pacte is even more bullish:
Le Pacte’s boss Jean Labadie, a veteran French producer-distributor who was one of the film’s first backers along with the sales banner Goodfellas (formerly Wild Bunch International), is even more enthusiastic than Marti, saying that “Jeanne du Barry” could garner up to one million admissions in French theaters.
Variety
However, despite that 'record-breaking' opening, the numbers aren't quite adding up for Maïwenn's expensive period drama.
After opening at the Cannes film festival on May 16th, Jeanne du Barry scored 401,481 admissions in its first week — 345,298 in theaters — which is indeed the best start for a Cannes-opener at the French box office since 2013's The Great Gatsby. Depp's PR has, predictably, been celebrating this as a triumphant return to box office success for the 59-year-old, signalling to any onlooking Hollywood producers that he's still a draw for discerning punters. But these numbers start to look less impressive when you scratch the surface.
The film's second week admissions declined by 55% to 156,279, and a further 52% in its third week to 75,653, for a current cumulative total of 631,477 admissions. It has grossed an estimated $4.8m so far, according to Box Office Mojo. Assuming that rate of decline stays consistent across its theatrical run, admissions will plateau at around 700,000 for a total estimated gross of $5.3m, well short of that lofty prediction of one million admissions from Le Pacte. If Comscore's prediction of 850k comes true, that would result in a $6.4m gross, so let's call that the upper estimate.
So how would that stack up against Maïwenn's career so far? Her most successful film, Polisse (2011), achieved 2.4m admissions, grossed $19.8m ($20.3m worldwide) and won the Jury Prize at Cannes 2011. Her most recent film ADN (2021) grossed $2.1m, despite being affected by reduced admissions due to Covid. Jeanne du Barry is tracking closely with Mon Roi (2015), which attracted 745,483 admissions and grossed $5m ($8m WW). In short, JdB is performing close to average for a Maïwenn film, so while Depp's inclusion doesn't appear to have significantly harmed its performance (as expected, he was never cancelled), it certainly hasn't elevated it beyond expectations.
But will it be profitable? The film's production budget was reported by Deadline to be $22.4m, making it one of the most expensive French films of 2022 and one of only three French films with a budget of over €10m. That figure doesn't even include things like marketing and distribution costs, so the film's break-even point will be several million higher. You don't have to be a mathematician to work out that there's going to be a pretty sizeable shortfall there.
PS if you're interested in a detailed breakdown of JdB's numbers, check out film producer (and Amber supporter) Paulo Boccato's threads (#1 and #2), in which he explains that while the film's opening week looks good on the surface, the finer detail shows that it's underperforming relative to its high production budget and wide release.
Now, it must be said that the French release isn't the end of the story: Netflix have acquired streaming rights (in France only) starting 15 months after its theatrical release, and there have been attempts to find an American distributor, although that has proved difficult so far due to Depp's poor reputation in the US film industry. But even if it does end up being shown across the Atlantic, it's difficult to see how the $20m (minimum) gap to profitability is going to be bridged.
So, it's well on course to becoming a flop at the French box office, a US deal might not happen and Netflix probably won't make up the shortfall, which all begs the question: why was this film ever greenlit with a budget so high and a star whose reputation makes it difficult to find distribution in the US? Beware the Depp spin on this one.
