2023.05.17 02:15 x_Johnnythepopepaul First 9mm, Staccato P or Walther PDP Pro 5.1?
Any guidance would be appreciated on helping me narrow down my first 9mm, mostly as a all of the above pistol (occasional carry/ truck and nightstand stashed and of course range toy)
As for as the occasional carry, call it pure ignorance and being a California transplant in Texas, that makes me think I will be fine carrying any pistol that size.
My first research rabbit hole lead me to the Walther PDP line and some more Reddit guidance pointed me to the PDP pro 5.1 which unfortunately I haven’t been able to find for rent other then a PDP compact.
I first heard about the Staccato P from the range employee’s recommendation’s, I’ve shot about 700 rounds in a rental, definitely like what they hype is about.
I guess I’m just trying to cover my bases before making a decision other then the vastly different prices
TL:DR Staccato P vs Walther Pro 5.1

Research
has been done into the relationship between the 2019-2020 Australian bush fires, La Niña, and flooding. The Southern hemisphere’s climate patterns were impacted by the devastating wildfires in unpredictable ways. But the wildfires themselves were yet another event in our ongoing feedback loop(s). What started the Australian drought? What can be blamed for a cyclone, or ocean currents?
Spain experienced its
hottest April ever, and is suffering a drought that may end up stretching for decades.
Farmers are using forbidden water to produce fruit, part of a growing dispute about who should have
water rights amid a forever-shrinking supply, and what our limited water should be used for. The prisoner’s dilemma incentivizes individual farmers and settlers to use illegal wells to maximize their individual advantage in a dog-eat-dog world. Half of France is at
crisis/vigilance levels of drought, and the
Agly River is just about dead. Portugal is
growing more desperate in the face of drought. The long, hot drought has arrived
decades earlier than anticipated.
Italy is
bracing for a long, historic drought, and struggling to get everyone to shift their understanding of the future of Water. Sandstorms are also
becoming more common globally.
Rainclouds aren’t always a relief. A
study from
Science of The Total Environment concluded that
antibiotic-resistant bacteria can travel inside clouds, and at similar concentrations to land. I didn’t have Plague Rain on my bingo card but I’ll pencil it in.
Gigantic
wildfires are burning in Siberia, killing over 20 people so far, confirmed. Several
wildfires in western Canada are burning, and
sending smoke south. This is only the beginning; scientists
warn of more common, more extensive, and more destructive wildfires in the future.
The UK Supreme Court
ruled in favor of Shell Oil, against 27,000+ Nigerian litigants, in a legal case dating back to a 2011 oil spill that released approximately 40,000 barrels (1.68M gallons, or 6.5M liters) off the coast of Nigeria. The oil damaged waterways, fishing stocks, and farmland—but Shell got away without penalty. This is the way.
Two
colossal methane leaks in Turkmenistan were revealed to have (last year) contributed more to global warming than the UK’s entire CO2 output in 2022. Turkmenistan leaked about 30% more methane last year than the United States did, and more than twice as much as Russia, the #3 violator. Mexico has
over 14,000 “orphan wells” and it’s not emitting a comparable amount of methane.
Extreme
heat has come to the Fraser Valley in Canada, where temperatures hit 34°C (93 °F), a great deal hotter than usual. Meanwhile
Vietnam saw its highest temperature ever: 44.6 °C (112 °F). Cambodia saw
record May temperatures, Hainan had
its all-time hottest day, alongside the
Cocos Islands,
Singapore, and more. It doesn’t take an expert to know that
heatwaves will become worse, and more common...even
underwater heatwaves.
Part of Nunavut
broke a heat record, and the Canadian military
is helping fight wildfires in Alberta. The
Castner Glacier is melting in Alaska faster than expected. A
general heat wave is moving into North America right now. Part of Australia saw
its coldest May morning.
Bangladesh and Myanmar are
planning on evacuating hundreds of thousands of people ahead of
Super-Cyclone Mocha, which will reportedly bring wind speeds of over 160km per hour (100 mph). The damage will never be fully repaired.
Flooding in the DRC
killed several hundred people, and 5,000+ are still missing. Thousands in Somalia
were displaced after
flash floods. At least
24 died in Yemen flooding. Meanwhile
drought migration surges in Iraq.
Rising sea temperatures
is affecting ocean oxygen levels, which have dropped more than 2% in the last 70 years. It’s one reason why
whales are getting thinner and
fish populations are suffering—alongside overfishing, microplastics, and other pollution. Even
freshwater fish are not safe from threats.

Some
economists are betting on an American recession. Christopher Waller, one of the members of the Fed’s Board of Governors,
claimed that “Climate change is real, but I do not believe it poses a serious risk to the safety and soundness of large banks or the financial stability of the United States…” Some analysts are
predicting more bank collapses ahead.
A few days before COVID regulations were set to end on migration to the U.S.,
a car attack killed 7 outside a migrant center in Brownsville, Texas. Anxiety is growing around
future swells of immigrants through U.S. border towns.
South Africa is
deploying its soldiers to monitor power stations for 5 months, in order to prevent power theft and sabotage. The U.S. is
accusing Iran of
supplying weapons to Yemeni rebels, in breach of agreements made to cool off the 9-year proxy War in Yemen.
Artificial Intelligence continues
to scare people and the so-called “godfather of AI” is
warning humanity to control its development before it’s too late. But it’s already far, far too late—decades, even. When was the real, final, reasonable point of no return for us?
Germany’s
production is falling, accompanying
Hungary and
Swedish troubles and
larger air freight slowing. Consumer
demand is down, yet consumer
need is up.
Debt defaulting in Chinese towns is supposedly rising, increasing reliance on the central government to
make new bank loans. Production and
demand are dropping for industrial goods inside China, but Pakistan is willing
to buy Russian oil in Yuan.
American commercial real estate may foretell economic doom ahead. People keep talking about
home prices crashing but it hasn’t happened yet. Sometimes it feels like Collapse is always arriving, but it’s never quite here…
——————————
I went to a crowded store last week and didn’t put my mask on, even though I had one with me. I was simply too lazy to put it on, or it would’ve been too hot or uncomfortable. Has this become the same experience for all of us? I am recommitting, tripling down, on wearing a mask to prevent COVID. Japan
is struggling to reverse the
hikikkomorization of society…but who wants to be around other people in a
social warzone?
This
Nature study analyzes how to build a resilient society after
during COVID—but
the pandemic is still with us.
Long COVID is not going away from society, and the aliment is still being understood in new ways. The longer you had COVID, the longer and more severe your Long COVID symptoms may be.
A
cholera outbreak in Ethiopia killed almost 100 people. On Thursday, the WHO
declared an end to the monkeypox global health emergency.
A
study in
Nature Mental Health announced what we already know: climate change and its consequences have caused
mental health problems for many people. Climate change itself
is linked to mental health problems.
——————————
The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre released
its 76-page report on internally displaced people (IDPs), and the findings are nothing short of alarming. There has been a
huge increase in the number of IDPs since 2021. Now there are estimated to be
71M+ IDPs across the world. Weather events/processes have created more IDPs than conflict (32M vs 28M, respectively), with the largest global region for IDPs being sub-Saharan Africa. The report, which is packed full of graphics, statistics, and doom, does not count refugees or other migrants/asylum-seekers who have left their home countries.
Of particular focus in the report is the link between
hunger and internal migration. The more often someone moves, the hungrier they are likely to be. The cycle of suffering is reinforced through patterns of Disaster-Starvation-War-Desperation-Trafficking-Trauma-War…
6.6M IDPs in Afghanistan, 4.5M in Yemen, 6.9M in Syria, 6M in the DRC, 4.6M in Ethiopia…Natural disasters (flooding, mostly) caused 8M+ people to become displaced in Pakistan last year.
Cholera, mosquitoes, desperation follow… Any system, when it is overloaded with so much pain, cannot help but Collapse.
Riots have now
killed at least 62 people in Manipur, one of India’s remote eastern states. Over 1,500 homes have been burnt and a few hundred injured, over
disagreements regarding certain tribes’ recognized minority status, or lack thereof. Over
35,000 people have been displaced so far, curfew was temporarily imposed, and the internet has allegedly been limited in the rural region. The army has stepped in to secure “peace” and the regional governor gave authorization for security forces to shoot disobedient protestors.
After
Israel killed 15 Palestinians in missile strikes, “Islamic Jihad,” a militant group in Gaza,
shot 270 rockets at Israel. 65 rockets didn’t make it out of Gaza; Israel intercepted 62, three struck urban areas, and the rest crashed in the fields, hills, and deserts. Israel retaliated with missile strikes, killing at least five Palestinians. The exchange of weapons marks the
highest threshold of violence seen in months.
Pakistan’s former PM,
Imran Khan, was arrested, and loads of people protested in immediate reaction. About a thousand people were arrested. The ruling
military-backed authorities are clamping down on the opposition party and Khan himself ahead of the October elections, which they will likely block Khan from contesting. Yet Pakistan’s
Supreme Court freed Khan, after at least 10 people died in nationwide protests, and called the imprisonment “invalid.” Is the country spinning into open Civil War, or just barely holding the line?
In Lebanon,
protestors broke into bank buildings with hammers and fireworks, in retaliation for the banks withholding of customer cash. In Senegal,
protestors are rising up after an opposition leader mobilized resistance; rioters throw rocks, and police respond with live rounds. One person has been confirmed dead. In Guinea,
anti-government protests turned violent and 7 people were slain. North African nations
may be next.
A reader last week linked me to
this protest-tracking website where you can sift through many recent and ongoing protests across the planet.
Sudan’s recent War has turned one month old, and
100,000+ people have fled the country, with
more than 700,000 internally displaced. Reports are emerging of
Wagner Group’s growing involvement in the gold trade, though they have been in Sudan for a few years now. Over 750 people are dead, over 5,000 wounded, and
fighting/explosions have happened outside the capital, Khartoum. Slowly, the
fighting is expanding into new communities, and into a wider and more complex War. Its
neighbors cannot support all Sudan’s refugees, let alone their own people…
“We still need a bit more time,” Zelenskyy said, justifying the
delay of Ukraine’s counteroffensive. The
UK is gifting long-range missiles to Ukraine, and
tensions grow between Wagner Group and the Kremlin over ammunition, honor, and broken promises. France has now
labeled Wagner Group as terrorists with the UK following close behind. South Africa has also been accused of supplying weapons to Russia, while
Switzerland approved a measure to enable the supply of weaponry to Ukraine.
In Haiti,
quasi-organized counteroffensives have begun against the gangsters that keep Port-Au-Prince’s population in a state of permanent uncertainty & terror. Some operate as vigilantes; others reinforce police operations. Private security, vigilantes, warlords, citizen-soldiers, police, gangsters, where is the line between ally and enemy, government and non-government agents, savior and slaver? Dynamic and ever-changing sources of authority compete in a world on fire.
——————————
Things to watch for next week include: ↠ Thailand
holds its contentious election today, Sunday, May 14th. Türkiye is also holding its
much-contested election today. Is it too late to stop the old authoritarians—or can they still be electorally replaced by new rulers?
Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest: -Climate scientists are…hopeful? I’m not sure I believe
this post from
ClimateOffensive but the OP supposedly asked a climate scientist about a number of things (1.5 °C, AI, geoengineering, the state of optimism, individual action, etc.) and got some straight answers.
-
This screenshot and thread is only the tip of the shitberg. The state of American education is in emergency, judging by the horror stories coming out of
teachers these days. It is worse than you imagine.
Another observation tells another tale of educational erosion. You will not regret leaving teaching.
-The “New Normal” has been co-opted by anti-maskers, business interests, and science deniers, perpetuating the same old Business As Usual (BAU), if
this gilded observation from a European country is to be believed. Is the same true for your nation or neighborhood? Are you still masking up? People are acting like COVID never happened in the first place…
-Canada is pricing out the poor, based on
this observation from everyone’s #1 climate getaway. Housing prices uncontrollably high, mental health problems growing, and the
decay of everything.

2023.05.08 21:33 autotldr Greg Abbott accused of hiding details about Texas mall shooting
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 69%. (I'm a bot)
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been accused by a Texas state senator of withholding details about Saturday's mass shooting at a mall.
Democratic Senator Roland Gutierrez said Monday that little information has emerged about the shooting, in which eight people were killed and seven others injured, because Abbott has directed law enforcement officials to "Keep it quiet."
In a statement, Gutierrez's spokesperson told Newsweek said that the senator believes there's been a delay in information similar to what happened in the Uvalde shooting and that "There is a massive lack of transparency in Texas that needs to be addressed."
Earlier in the morning, Abbott held a press conference at the Capitol but avoided discussing the shooting or a separate incident in Brownsville, where an SUV drove into a crowd of people in front of a migrant shelter on Sunday, killing eight people and injuring 10 others.
Abbott said that he expected the public will get more information in "The coming days" and that Texas leaders would be able to take action to prevent similar crimes based on that information.
Those included efforts to raise the age of purchase for an AR-15 to 21, expand background checks and require the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide information about safe firearm storage to parents in Texas schools.

2023.05.06 20:39 NortonNowlinMA Decoding Mormon Apologetic Propaganda
Since 1830 Mormonism has continually attempted to reinvent itself as a religion, a church, and a corporation in order fit, as a round peg in a square hole, into the standard mainstream of Christianity in the USA and the world. This reinventing has occurred frequently in order to make the extremely opulent cult adaptable to the current political and social winds blowing through the strata of American mainstream Christian society. Most Mormon, or Latter-day Saint zealots don't appreciate, and greatly discourage, serious examination and study by its members of the secular and doctrinal history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. in the year 1980, Dr. Thomas G. Alexander, the Lemuel Redd Chair of Western History at BYU was one of the first Mormon academicians to publish the truth about Mormon doctrinal reinvention in his formal paper, "The Reconstruction of Mormon Doctrine," which he sought to have pushed in one of the LDS Church official organs, "The Improvement Era" or "The Ensign." Nonetheless, the officiating powers of the Mormon Church refused to publish the cogently researched paper. I spoke personally to Dr. Alexander in March of 1990 and discovered his discouragement from not getting the paper published by the Mormon Church because of its historical veracity and clarity. The paper was subsequently published in the speculative, but widely read magazine, "Sunstone." In a figuratively loyal expression of a dedication to the Mormon Church and BYU, Alexander told me the truth would never harm what he euphemistically called doctrinal reconstruction, continuing revelation.
The original 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon and the 1833 Book of Commandments are the two most essential historical sources of the almost surgical reconstruction of LDS theology and doctrine that are the least read by the rank-and-file members of the Mormon Church. The Mormon hierarchy in Salt Lake City and in the local wards, or congregations, of the 700-billion-dollar cult greatly discourage, if not outright forbid, members from obtaining and reading these two very informative primers of Mormonism. Why are members discouraged from reading these two books? Well, if compared with the current 1980 edition of the Book of Mormon and the current 1980 book of Mormon doctrine, commandments, and covenants called the "Doctrine and Covenants," the interested member would discover a completely theology in the 1830 Book of Mormon that was revised away from the first revision in 1838 through six subsequent revisions. Dr. Alexander denoted these revisions in his 1980 paper. Since I was first formerly associated with the LDS Mormon Church in 1970, and joined the cult in 1970 through association with the Mormon fulltime missionaries in Tyler, Texas, I was told by those testifying missionaries that the first prophet of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, had translated directly from golden plates the 1830 Book of Mormon. This salient bit of historical information was radically and formally changed in 2013 on the
LDS.org website to declare that Smith had not translated the 1830 Book of Mormon, but, instead, had dictated it to people who wrote it down as Smith saw the words appear on a white seer stone, which Smith had claimed to use to find buried treasure, while sticking his head int a dark hat to see the stone. From translation to English in 1830 from a language that had not anciently existed to dictation from a stone in a hat, the original 1830 Book of Mormon was produced from the imaginative mind of Joseph Smith without the use of golden plates, and so was every revision that was produced from 1838 to 1980. The Book of Commandments produced by Joseph Smith in 1833 was stated by Smith as the final statements from the Mormon god to Smith and the Mormon Church. In 1835, every chapter of the Book of Commandments was either changed or deleted with doctrines, commandments, and theology not mentioned in the 1833 Book of Commandments totally replacing what was supposedly the will of the Mormon god, as though the deity had changed its mind in a two-year period of time. Dr. Alexander denoted these reconstructed changes in his paper.
Hence, the Mormon LDS Church was predicated on what might be called pernicious lies about the original source of the 1830 Book of Mormon and the church's sources of doctrine and theology, which were propagandistically used by the Mormon hierarchy from 1830 until the lies were first exposed in 2013. Had I known in 1970 what is now known about Mormonism in 2023, I would never have committed myself to a pagan cult for over 30 years.

2023.05.05 22:50 Secure-Reception-783 Is it wise to give my friend/potential future roommate $200 a month to help with his portion of his rent?
Hello! Just a little background, I am currently graduating this month and have signed with an employer for an annual income, pre-tax, of around $124,000, starting in June. I will be in a large city/suburb in Texas where the rent is decently high in comparison of most of the state (you can probably guess where that is). Currently, I am looking to get an apartment, and the one's that fit my needs are around $1,550-$1,650 for a one bedroom/one bath. I will begin paying off my loans (around ~$80,000) and will hopefully pay it off within 3 years (that's the current plan). Well, I would like a roommate so I can have some company and to subsidize the cost. A childhood friend of mine lives in the area, and is making around $35,000, pretax, and he is currently living with his parents. However, his new job, which he will make roughly the same, but will be a discipline he is more interested in, is an 1.5 hour commute from his parents. Where I will live it'll be a 20 min commute for him to his job.
Okay, so this is what I am asking and need advice on. I was thinking of asking him to live in a 2x2 apartment that would be around $1,800 total and around $900 between the two of us. However, I know that's a lot of money for rent for him, especially since he has been paying $0 the past year, since he lives with his parents. I was thinking of giving him $200 a month, to specifically go into rent, that way he is paying $700 and I'll pay $1,100. In the end I am saving over $500 a month while having a roommate who is a good friend of mine. So the crux of the problem is: Am I setting myself up for a difficult situation that may impact our friendship some way or another. Not necessarily the offering, but the way it may snowball to other requests from him (even though I don't think personally he'll ever do that).Just wanted some advice or experience y'all may have. If this isn't the right sub or my question is inappropriate for this sub no worries! I appreciate everyone's times!
TL;DR: I'm graduating soon and found a job with a $124,000 annual income. Planning to move to a pricey area in Texas and want to find a roommate. Considering asking my childhood friend who currently lives with his parents. His new job is closer to my potential apartment, and I'm thinking of splitting a $1,800 apartment, with me paying $1,100 and offering him $200 to subsidize his share so he pays $700. Worried if this arrangement could strain our friendship or lead to more demands. Seeking advice and experiences from others.
Edit: I do not expect him to pay me back or anything.

2023.05.04 05:06 Kindheartedspirit Change is hard, but it's worth
I started an official ADHD journey in Feb. 2019. All the years prior, I was undiagnosed and knew I had it. I grew up in a time and in a culture that heavily stigmatized mental health. As such, I didn't get assistance until I was 22 yrs old. After, I began working as behavior technician 2 months later.
I'm proud that I was able to graduate with a BA before I was 25 like I wanted without using accommodations. However, my gpa was 2.44 at the time I geaduated.
I applied and started an MSW. I wanted to give myself an option to have many doors open so that's why I chose to purse the degree. I made sure to request accommodations because I needed to average 3.0 or higher to graduate. I was 2 classes away from starting my general practicum, and was preparing to relocate to the other side of the US. I failed the course and I had to retake it.
After the move, I tried hard to maintain balanced. I was juggling 2 part-time jobs, a full-time job, and full-time school. It left me spending a lot of time eloping. I started to apply more of the ABA strategies I teach the kids I worked with. I had to take a LOA to find a placement site, but it was during this time that I witnessed changes with my 2 clients that made me want to purse an MS in ABA instead. I spent 2 weeks of beating myself up and it wasn't until one of my friends and I talked that I was able to make my decision. "Why does it have to social work?" was one of the questions asked. Because I said I would.
It didn't have to be. I realized that shortly after. While the motivation was there, I requested a major change. I'm not giving up on pursuing mastery in a field, but rather, I am shifting my focus to something I find a better fit for me.
My time in the MSW program allowed me to come to terms with who I am and allowed me to find what's right for me.
I officially started my first MS in ABA course May 1st. The last 4 weeks leading up to this had been nervewrecking, but so exhilarating! As soon as I woke up on Monday, I accepted the course right away and have been take 15-20 minutes to read and go over the course materials.
There's no rest for the wicked. Fun can wait now. I am ready to settle down for a bit to get myself in check. There's so many contingencies set up so that I could accomplish my goals... And a lot of people I cannot let down, including me. Because the idea is, if I can't be happy being myself, then I'd never be enough for anyone, especially not for myself.
"The most difficult is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity." - Amelia Earhart.
TL;DR - I went through an ADHD and academia journey in Feb. 2019 that changed my life. I can proudly say that I accomplished many things:
- sought mental health assistance
- allowed myself to get through my trauma
- moved out of the dreadful state I was stuck in for 19 yrs.
- started a masters program
- proved that I can be a 3.0 student (with the teaching/learning style that works best for me and accommodations)
- worked in a career field for 4+ yrs
- got past instilled stigma and did a major change
- shifted my hyperfixation on something I've always loved: pattern seeking and behaviorism
- learned the difference between preserving vs persevering.
I wouldn't be who I am today if I didn't leave the last career field to enter ABA field, nor could I make the decision I did if I didn't learn the ABA skills and strategies I have in the last 4+ yrs.

2023.04.30 14:07 FelicitySmoak_ On This Day In Michael Jackson HIStory - April 30th
TRIGGER WARNING : Today's post deals with some dark subject matter (especially 2013). It goes into details of Michael's death & the crime scene that was his bedroom. I wish there were some lighter events to at least bring balance. This post also became longer than I intended but I feel like this is important information. If I'm going to do a series like this, I think it's important to cover everything - the good & the bad - to have a complete picture 1983 - Michael Jackson reaches #1 on the Billboard US Top 40 singles chart with "Beat It" from the album
Thriller. It would stay at the top spot for 3 weeks
2004 - Michael arrives at the Santa Maria Courthouse with Katherine, Joe, Grace, Randy, Jackie, Mesereau, Oxman & Raymone Bain.
He pleads not guilty to 10 counts retained by the Grand Jury. The new charges indicate a new timeline of allegations + a charge of false emprisonment + abduction of a child with the help of 5 undicted co-conspirators (Marc Schaffel, Dieter Wienser, Ronald Konitzer, Frank Tyson (Cascio) & Vincent Amen) Outside of the court house, Mesereau & Michael give a little speech before returning to Neverland.
https://imgur.com/a/q0HIUHe https://youtu.be/rHIb3RyMBaM 2004 - On the same day as Michael's arraignment, there was another far less public event unfolding that could have had a future impact on the Jackson case. Serious allegations of a pattern of abuses among Santa Barbara law enforcement and the DA's office, including District Attorney Tom Sneddon, were made by Santa Barbara County dentist, Thambiah Sundaram, in an interview on Online Legal Review Talk Radio. Sneddon is the DA prosecuting the case against Michael Jackson. In the interview, conducted by Ron Sweet, Sundaram stated that there was opposition to a non-profit medical clinic he operated.
Sundaram said that when city officials were unable to shut down his clinic, he was arrested on multiple counts, including impersonating a doctor, grand theft, and malicious mischief. Sundaram's wife was arrested, as well. An employee at the clinic was also charged, of committing a drive-by shooting. Neither Sundaram, his wife nor the employee were convicted. Sundaram said that he eventually (1996) won a judgment against Sneddon and the DA's office for a substantial, six-figure amount, for causes including conspiracy, false imprisonment, and other violations of his civil rights.
Sundaram's allegations against Sneddon were serious, in that he also claimed to have heard, first-hand, statements by Sneddon and others in the DA's office that suggest that Santa Barbara police persecution of innocent citizens is planned, common, and often racially motivated. Sundaram said that in 1994, he attended a fund-raising event with Tom Sneddon and other city officials, where ways to "get Michael Jackson out of the county" were discussed. He alleges that some of Sneddon's friends wanted Michael's 2,700 acres to turn into a vineyard.Wine making is the leading agricultural industry in Santa Barbara
Racist remarks were allegedly made on that occasion. According to Sundaram, other alleged vendettas were discussed as well, to the extent where he said it resembled a Mafia planning session. He also alleges that authorities laughed & joked about passing around pictures of Michael's genitalia from the 1993 strip search. These pictures were supposed to be sealed but were not, as Geraldo Rivera later confirmed
Sundaram's allegations are not an isolated instance. There have been many complaints and lawsuits against the Santa Barbara DA's office. The new counts against Michael may be consistent with a pattern that Santa Barbara defense attorney Gary Dunlap has called "stacking charges."
Dunlap said, ". . . I mean, it's one thing to be charged with one crime and have a trial and be acquitted on it, but the district attorney in Santa Barbara has a policy that if they throw enough charges against you, the jury is bound to convict you on something."
This information reveals a new side to the Michael Jackson case. The extent of the law suits for false arrests, false imprisonments, condoning of excessive force by the police, tampering with evidence, and multiple civil rights violations suggests a culture of corruption among Santa Barbara law-enforcement. The taxpayers of Santa Barbara have paid substantial settlements in these cases.
When Dunlap was asked, in his interview, to comment on the Jackson case, he said that he had no opinion one way or another on the case. However, he went on to say, ". . . the very fact that he's being prosecuted by Sneddon's office does not cause me to have any reason to believe that he's guilty in that, because of what I know about the district attorney's office, I know that they do vindictive prosecutions on a routine basis."
2009 - Michael goes to Dr Klein’s in Beverly Hills.
2009 - Conrad Murray ordered injectable (IV) Lorazepam & Midazolam.
Per the National Library Of Medicine:
Midazolam injection is used before medical procedures and surgery to cause drowsiness, relieve anxiety, and prevent any memory of the event. It is also sometimes given as part of the anesthesia during surgery to produce a loss of consciousness. Midazolam injection is also used to cause a state of decreased consciousness in seriously ill people in intensive care units (ICU) who are breathing with the help of a machine. Midazolam injection is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow relaxation and decreased consciousness.
Midazolam injection may cause serious or life-threatening breathing problems such as shallow, slowed, or temporarily stopped breathing that may lead to permanent brain injury or death. You should only receive this medication in a hospital or doctor's office that has the equipment that is needed to monitor your heart and lungs and to provide life-saving medical treatment quickly if your breathing slows or stops. Your doctor or nurse will watch you closely after you receive this medication to make sure that you are breathing properly
On 6/27/09, Murray told the police that 3 days before Michael’s death he “introduced” Lorazepam & Midazolam in an effort to “wean” MJ off Propofol.
Prosecutor: In the last 3 days, according to Dr. Murray, he was attempting to wean Mr. Jackson off Propofol. What did Dr. Murray tell you he did?
Detective Orlando Martinez: Dr. Murray said he lowered the amount of Propofol that he usually gave Mr. Jackson and INTRODUCED Midazolam and Lorazepam to help Mr. Jackson sleep.
If Conrad Murray “introduced” Lorazepam and Midazolam in an effort to “wean” Michael off Propofol starting June 22 then why was he ordering these drugs way back in April?
2013 - Jackson v AEG trial day 2
Katherine Jackson and Randy Jackson attend
Court first addressed notes from 2 alternate jurors about availability. One alternate juror has a funeral to attend tomorrow and one alternate jury is moving out of state. The court will only be 1 hour tomorrow (end at 11:00) to accommodate the juror attending a funeral. The juror moving out of state will stay on the jury panel for now
AEG asked to exclude Randy Jackson from the courtroom because he is listed as a witness . AEG attorney argued that there was "a risk in allowing any of them in the courtroom". Jackson lawyer said Randy Jackson is supporting Katherine Jackson in the courtroom and should stay. Jackson lawyer said Katherine needs one son or daughter to sit with her
The judge ordered that only one of Michael's brothers and sisters can come to court to watch the testimony at a time -- and then only if Katherine is present
Judge said "One is enough. He (Randy Jackson) can remain but you cannot have five in the courtroom. Witnesses who aren't parties generally aren't allowed to listen to testimony"
Judge also told attorneys they have to tell her which witnesses are coming up, and how long their testimony is expected to last
LAFD paramedic Richard Senneff (who testified during Murray trial) is the first called to the stand Media
Katherine and Randy Jackson left the courtroom when Senneff began testifying (Multiple media)
Senneff starts his testimony by telling the jurors what he does as a paramedic and explained the different machines in a rescue ambulance
Senneff is wearing his dress uniform, which he tells jury is for "special occasions" Several jurors, audience members, laugh. Jackson's lawyer Panish asks: "Have you ever rescued any cats in trees?"
"I have not rescued a cat," Senneff, who is also a firefighter, joked. "I rescued a dog that was lying in the street."
Senneff also shared the ironic story of the next emergency he responded to after leaving MJ at the UCLA.His ambulance was called to a west Los Angeles apartment to help an elderly Russian woman."When she heard the news on TV that Michael Jackson had died, she fainted," he said. She suffered a minor head injury in her fall."She was just deeply emotional when we took her to the hospital," Senneff said.
Timeline of paramedics' response, PT :
12:22 - dispatched
12:23- rolling down the street
12:25- on scene
13:07 - transported
13:13 - hospital
Senneff stated on 6/25/09, he responded to a patient not breathing. Senneff said he arrived at MJ's house at 12:25 pm and got out of the ambulance with their equipment, EKG monitor, needles, and medicine
Senneff testified Station 71 in Bel-Air had received the emergency call at 12:22 p.m. and he arrived at MJ's home three minutes later. The ambulance and a fire engine that responded were waved through the gates and parked in front of the house
Once in the house, Senneff said, he was "galloping" up the stairs. Senneff says he was the first paramedic inside MJ's room
Senneff saw Murray near the nightstand with a security guard, and MJ lying on the bed.Senneff: He was leaning over the patient, patient laying on the bed, Murray standing there and they were moving the patient to the floor
Senneff said he noticed oxygen tanks, an IV pole and an IV bag in the room, along with Dr. Conrad Murray, who he said told him that he was a cardiologist. Senneff told the panel he found an IV pole, oxygen tanks and a nightstand with several medicine bottles on the nightstand.
"EVen in Bel-Air it's unusual to have the personal physician at the house", Senneff testified.
Senneff:" I saw a patient wearing pajama pants and shirt, and some surgical cover over the head. He looked very pale, very weak". Senneff testified MJ's body was pale and so underweight his ribs were showing
Senneff said "The patient appeared to be chronically ill to me. He was very pale and underweight. I thought perhaps this was a hospice patient"
Senneff said "To me, he looked like someone who was at the end stage of a long disease process"
Because of what he saw, Senneff asked Murray if MJ had a 'do not resuscitate' order.
"Dr. Murray loked at me blankly at first," Senneff testified. Then the doctor said, "No, no, this just happened"
Senneff said Murray was "frantic"
"He was pale, he was sweating, he was very busy," Senneff said of Murray
Senneff said Murray told him he was treating the patient for dehydration and exhaustion and said Jackson was not taking any medication. Senneff testified that Murray never told him about Propofol
Senneff: "I asked what his underlying condition was.... the doctor said nothing, that he was just treating him for dehydration & exhaustion"
"It just looked a lot more complicated than dehydration and exhaustion," Senneff testified
Senneff asked what kind of medication patient was taking. Senneff said that according to Dr. Murray, "he was not" (taking any medication)
When he asked Murray when the emergency had happened, he said Murray told him: "Just this minute. Right when I called you"
Senneff said when he moved MJ, he felt he did not have a pulse. His pupils were fixed and dilated, eyes were quite dried
But when Senneff checked Jackson, he said he could find no pulse. He testified that his eyes were dilated and dry, his skin cool & his lips a faint blue tint - a sign the singer had been dead as long as an hour. Senneff said MJ's chest was pale white, his hands and feet turned blue from not getting enough ventilation/oxygen. MJ's blue hands, feet and lips, and the singer's dry eyes all signaled to Senneff that MJ was dead and hadn't been breathing for a long time
Senneff: "When I picked him up and moved him, he was cool to the touch. I would say less than an hour... Body doesn't get cold that fast"
"To us it didn't make sense that it had just happened", Senneff said
Jackson family attorney: "He was dead before you got there, wasn't he?" Senneff: "Yes, sir."
Senneff said he contacted UCLA hospital. He also said Dr. Murray then indicated he gave MJ a little bit of lorazepam to help him sleep
Senneff: "I notified the hospital and was told to continue resuscitation efforts"
Senneff testified a paramedic was using the ambu bag to breath for the patient, another connecting the EKG machine and was giving him drugs. As for Dr. Murray, he was trying to help the best he could, Senneff said, and that the doctor "was looking for things in the box"
Senneff: "Dr Murray reached in our box, he gave additional injection of epinephrine"
Senneff testified Murray said he felt femoral artery pulse. However, Senneff said no one else, other than Murray, was able to find a pulse. MJ's condition hadn't changed on the way to the hospital
Senneff "The hospital asked me about calling (time of death). Murray said 'no' "
Murray looked like "a deer in the headlights" when paramedic Seneff went back into MJ's room to gather his equipment . Senneff: Murray had a white plastic bag in one hand. When I came to the door he froze, he was actually surprised to see me (in MJ's room)
Senneff testified Murray rode in the ambulance together. He was standing in the ambulance, holding the top rail, talking on the cell phone
It was chaotic outside the house, very difficult to get out. People trying to take pictures, unbelievable amount of commotion. Senneff was shown a picture of MJ inside the ambulance and confirmed it was legit
Upon arrival at UCLA, Senneff explained to the ER doctor what he had done, like a quick recap, no changes in patient's status.
Senneff said initially he was not able to identify the patient, but as it progressed someone said his name was MJ.
Senneff: "Once someone said his name, I looked at the patient's face and saw it was Michael Jackson"
AEG Lawyer Cahan: "No one on your team detected pulse?" Senneff: "No" AEG lawyer Cahan: "Was he dead for a period of time?" Senneff: Yes"
AEG lawyer asked Senneff if he thought Murray was not telling him the truth."I don't even go there," Senneff said. "I'm not worried about that"
AEG lawyer Cahan: "Did Murray lie to you?" Senneff: "I'm not even going there. I was worried about the patient and all the info I can get"
Senneff said he let Murray go through his medical bag since what he was doing was reasonable
Senneff testified it is not unusual for family members, people around the patient to not know whether they are taking drugs
Cahan went through the emergency medical service report again. It asks the weight of the patient, Senneff estimated 150lbs, 5'09-ish. Senneff answers 120 calls per month average. He said he got very good at estimating people's weight
When Senneff asked Murray about MJ's underlying condition: "He said nothing, nothing, I'm just treating him for dehydration, exhaustion"
AEG's lawyer asked Senneff about his knowledge of propofol. Senneff told her that he knew propofol was a general anesthesia, but had never seen it used. As to Propofol, Senneff said all he knew it was an anesthetic used in surgeries. He learned through the media that was MJ's cause of death
Senneff told he did not see Dr. Murray actually performing CPR
Senneff said the American Heart Association indicates CPR is performed on a bed it's less desirable. One must place patient on hard surface. Panish said Dr. Murray performed CPR with Michael Jackson on the bed: "That's not how you're supposed to do it," Senneff opined
Panish asked Senneff whether he thought Conrad Murray was competent to perform CPR. Senneff said he didn't believe so
As to Dr. Murray, Senneff said: "I did not believe he was telling me the full story at the time"
Panish: What did Michael Jackson tell you? Senneff: Nothing, sir Panish: Because he was dead when you arrived? Senneff: Yes, sir
Senneff agreed that it is expected that a competent, fit physician be able to revive a patient in respiratory arrest
LAPD Detective Orlando Martinez testified next. He started by explaining his training and background. Martinez learned from his lieutenant that Michael Jackson was the victim. He went to UCLA to begin his investigation
Martinez said he saw Frank Dileo and Randy Phillips at the hospital as well as Katherine, Randy Jackson & MJ's kids
Jackson's lawyer Panish: Were you able to speak with Dr. Murray at the UCLA? Martinez: No Panish: Why not? Martinez: He had left
At the hospital, LAPD officers decided to fly MJ's body to the coroner's officer so that the transport wouldn't become a spectacle
Martinez then went to MJ's house at Carolwood. Martinez photographed the scene . Lots of photographs were shown to the jurors. Martinez explained the photographs to the jurors. He also mentioned that police made three separate trips to MJ's home to collect evidence
Martinez didn't search Murray's vehicle because he wanted a search warrant. Martinez didn't leave Murray's car at the residence, wanted a reason for the doc to go talk to him. Car was impounded to a police yard
Inside the BMW -- which was registered to Murray's sister in Texas -- he found a contract between AEG Live and Murray saying he would be paid $150,000 a month to work as Jackson's doctor, along with AEG Live President Randy Phillips' business card and cell phone number, he said. In Murray's car: handwriten note with 24 hour pharmacies names/numbers, Randy Phillips' business card, contract between Dr. Murray and AEG
The detective said that when he interviewed Murray with two attorneys present, the doctor made up a story to protect himself.
"He was not being honest and forthright", Martinez testified
Martinez had already interviewed Dr. Murray prior to the car's search. He attempted to interview him again, but doc wasn't talking anymore. Martinez said he was looking for a motive for MJ's death, and the contract could be an important financial aspect to investigate
Seeing pictures of MJ's room, Martinez said he saw IV bag, pill bottles, vials, ambu bag. "It looked like the room had been cleaned up," he said. Martinez: "Things had been removed from the room prior to police's arrival." He took several pictures to document the scene. Martinez says he learned from Dr. Murray that there were 3 bags total of medicine in the closet. He went back to the house to retrieve them. Martinez took fingerprints off the bags and found Dr. Murray's prints on the bottles (Jurors were shown several pictures of evidence collected and crime scene photos)
Det. Orlando Martinez at first concluded that the cause was accidental or natural. Martinez said at that time the investigation was leading to natural or accidental death, no real signs of foul play, but it was odd
The searches led Martinez to conclude that Murray's financial condition was "severely distressed"
Panish: "Is there any question in your mind that Dr. Murray was in dire financial straits", Martinez: "No, there was no question"
"That's a lot of money for anyone," Martinez said. "Seeing the scene and talking to him about what he had done and how he did it raised questions"
Martinez said that led him to believe Murray's actions were motivated by the $150,000 a month he expected to be paid by AEG
"Focusing on the financial aspect may have been important for Dr. Murray's willingness to disregard his Hippocratic Oath for financial gain," he testified
Martinez said what he learned about Murray's financial troubles led him to opine that "He may break the rules, bend the rules, do whatever he needed to do to get paid," Martinez said. "It might solve his money problems"

2023.04.25 12:42 ValueInvesting72 NextDecade: NEXT a Texas LNG producer that seeks FID in June (13$ price target)
| Here is some research I've done and compiled on the prospective liquified natural gas exporter based in Texas: NextDecade. - NextDecade is developing the 27 mmbtu, 5 train Rio Grande LNG export project.
- RGLNG claims to be the world's first and only LNG export terminal with integrated carbon capture and storage.
- FERC lifts remand on Rio Grande LNG and Texas LNG, allowing both projects to move forward after nearly 20 months of delays
- The company has signed eight long-term sale and purchase agreements totaling 11 mmbtu of offtake. A 4 mmbtu SPA deal is reportedly in the final stages with TotalEnergies (source: POTEN & Partners)
- NextDecade is holding discussions with MUFG bank and Macquarie Capital to secure financing
Introduction NextDecade Corporation is a natural gas company that engages in the liquefaction and sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and capture and storage of CO2 emissions. It focuses on the development activities on the Rio Grande LNG terminal facility located in the Port of Brownsville in southern Texas; and a carbon capture and storage project (CCS project) at the terminal, as well as on other CCS projects with third-party industrial source facilities. So in essence, NextDecade has an interesting LNG project that has good geography and scale. It also comes with plans for an integrated carbon capture and storage solution, differentiating NextDecade's LNG cargoes from that of other export terminals Analysts say FERC's approval could give NextDecade (NEXT) the momentum it needs to reach a final investment decision for Rio Grande LNG, which has reached sales and purchase agreements for 10.75M metric tons of its anticipated 27 tons/year of liquefied natural gas. NextDecade Corp. said in a regulatory filing on Thursday that it has amended its agreements with Bechtel Energy Inc. to lock in the prices of its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts until June 15 for the proposed Rio Grande LNG export terminal in South Texas. What is Rio Grande LNG? The RGLNG project is a fully permitted LNG export terminal, envisioned to ultimately have the capacity to export 27 mtpa of LNG through 5 liquefaction trains. The project is located at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, with deepwater port access and supporting marine infrastructure. It is designed to use proven liquefaction technology from Air Products and Chemicals (APD) and Baker Hughes (BKR). RGLNG will be supplied with natural gas from the Permian and Eagle Ford shale basins via the Rio Bravo Pipeline, a 4.5 Bcf/d pipeline to be built by Enbridge Inc. (ENB). https://preview.redd.it/rbxitd4ne0wa1.png?width=731&format=png&auto=webp&s=cacaa7e8dc1e2270998c9d4dcf3c775d0f014cdd As mentioned above, RGLNG will connect LNG customers with the resource-rich Permian and Eagle Ford basins, which have a combined 700 Tcf of natural gas resource. At the same time, NextDecade believes RGLNG's location in South Texas is a competitive differentiator as it avoids potential gas supply and concentration risk with other Upper Texas/Louisiana LNG operators. Furthermore, Brownsville is less susceptible to large-scale hurricanes, as the area has only experienced 1 hurricane of Cat 3 and above since 1990 versus 10 storms of Cat 3 and above in Louisiana. https://preview.redd.it/llyeusxpe0wa1.png?width=736&format=png&auto=webp&s=e7acbad7a5603e377f6c4081c26515afe61868a1 Projected costs and valuation Under the current agreement, the company’s EPC costs with Bechtel are estimated at $11.5 billion. The prices would cover three liquefaction trains, two 180,000 cubic meter storage tanks and two marine berths. The first phase would have the capacity to produce 17.6 million metric tons/year (mmt/year) of LNG. The facility as designed would ultimately include five trains and have a capacity of 27 mmt/y. Bechtel has already started with some early site work after NextDecade issued a limited notice to proceed in October While it’s difficult to value a pre-construction LNG export facility, NEXT currently trades around 5$ to 6$ per share. According to Evercore, their DCF model including weighted outcomes of bull/base/bear case scenarios represented by full-development, phase one development, and liquidation (see table below) and achieve a weighted target price of 13.5$ at FID Evercore ISI According to Evercore, if NEXT announces FID on Phase 1, on 17 mtpa, its production would be worth $20 billion on a pro-rata basis when compared to a $65 billion valuation for Cheniere which has a 55 mtpa production. If they assume an 80% construction#financing risk discount to Cheniere, evercore arrives at a conservative $4 billion risk adjusted market cap estimate post FID, whis is equivalent to 4.3x the current market price of 6.2$/share (i.e. 28$/s at current float) Competition and risks/ESG Concerns NEXT is of course subject to many macroeconomic and global risks, the biggest one being if the firm fails to have sufficient contracts to reach FID. However with FERC removing the remand and approving all permits, a rumoured deal with TotalEnergies will clinch all contracts needed to secure financing and FID by summer 2023. NextDecade is developing a capital intensive and highly complex LNG facility along with the infrastructure. therefore construction related problems and delays could occur down the road. Having said that, Bechtel is one of the best builders in the business and will mitigate those risks. There are plenty of SPA deals signed, but most projects still need more. Next is pretty close to securing all it needs to issue a Final Investment Decision this summer. https://preview.redd.it/1ge9vnuye0wa1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a6ff73f649bc8f78c686c66c1a5653165eb994c NextDecade said in the regulatory filing that the Bechtel amendment would “extend the price validity,” but cautioned that it may change if an NTP is not issued by June 15. The company has signed eight long-term sale and purchase agreements totaling 11 mmty of offtake. Seven deals were signed or expanded last year amid a record year for U.S. LNG contracting as overseas buyers looked to shield themselves from volatility on the spot market. NextDecade is committed to environmental stewardship, which includes reducing emissions and mitigating impacts to wetland and wildlife. For example, at our Rio Grande LNG project, itwill meet or exceed all environmental and other regulatory requirements, which include strict standards governing impacts on air, land, water, and wildlife. for more details on Next Carbon Capture Solutions and ESG please read here Conclusion NextDecade is expected to announce shortly that it has signed its final and largest SPA of around 4 MMt/y with TotalEnergies. The French oil major will inject equity into Rio Grande LNG, giving it the final push towards its June FID target and taking its overall contracted capacity to 86% from 64%. NextDecade, like Sempra, is holding discussions with banks to secure project finance. If NextDecade declares FID in June, we expect the share price to rise sharply to the low teens by summer, yielding a prospective 100% return. Disclosure: I’m long and this is not investment advice. submitted by ValueInvesting72 to Wallstreetbetsnew [link] [comments] |

2023.04.22 23:22 autotldr The Texas Senate Just Voted To Destroy Its Public Universities
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 88%. (I'm a bot)
Yesterday's vote by the Texas Senate to end tenure at the state's three dozen or so public universities is so extraordinary and representative of the current cultural moment that it's worth your attention.
Many observers in Texas think it's unlikely that the tenure ban will pass the GOP-controlled Texas House.
Eliminating tenure for new hires would put Texas universities at an extreme disadvantage when recruiting faculty.
Long ago, Texas set up a unique funding mechanism that diverted significant value from the state's extractive resources to the state's flagship public universities.
With an enrollment of some 700,000 students, Texas public universities are a civic and economic driver for the state and the nation.
Texas public schools would have to display the Ten Commandments and set aside time for prayer and Bible study under bills passed by the Texas Senate that now head to the state House.

2023.04.20 17:00 autotldr SpaceX's Starship Flight Test ends with a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly. A successful failure. Onto the next stage of development and testing. Video linked below.
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 48%. (I'm a bot)
SpaceX's Starship rocket blasted off on its first test flight Thursday but failed minutes after rising from the launch pad. The two-stage rocketship, standing taller than the Statue of Liberty at 120 metres high, blasted off from the company's Starbase spaceport and test facility east of Brownsville, Texas, for what SpaceX hoped, at best, would be a 90-minute debut flight into space.
A live SpaceX webcast of the lift-off showed the rocketship rising from the launch tower into the morning sky as the Super Heavy's raptor engines roared to life in a ball of flame and billowing clouds of exhaust and water vapour.
SpaceX officials on the webcast cheered the feat of getting the fully integrated Starship and booster rocket off the ground for a clean launch and declared the brief episode a successful test flight.
Despite the explosion, company CEO Elon Musk heralded the test launch.
"Learned a lot for next test launch in a few months," Mr Musk wrote.
The futuristic spacecraft flew several kilometres into the air during testing a few years ago, landing successfully only once, but this was to be the inaugural launch of the first-stage booster with 33 methane-fuelled engines.

this pushes back the origin and early diversification of ichthyosaurs to before the beginning of the Age of Dinosaurs; thereby forcing a revision of the textbook interpretation and revealing that ichthyosaurs probably first radiated into marine environments prior to the extinction event.
Excitingly, the discovery of the oldest ichthyosaur rewrites the popular vision of Age of Dinosaurs as the emergence timeframe of major reptile lineages. It now seems that at least some groups predated this landmark interval, with fossils of their most ancient ancestors still awaiting discovery in even older rocks on Spitsbergen and elsewhere in the world.

Looking at seeds of the small flowering plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, the team sought to understand the mechanism behind thermos-inhibition. They began by looking at data from young plants – further along in the plant’s development than germination.

Marine Citizenship is the term used for people who get involved in changing how humans use the ocean. It has been investigated as a potential policy tool to engage the public in marine environmental issues through a new study by the University of Exeter and the University of Bristol Law School.

One of those players is the purine metabolite xanthine, which is found at high levels in caffeinated foods such as coffee, tea and chocolate. Results of the study are published in Immunity.

Hypnotizability testing requires special training and in-person evaluation rarely available in the clinical setting. Now, investigators have developed a fast, point-of-care molecular diagnostic test that identifies a subset of individuals who are most likely to benefit from hypnosis interventions for pain treatment. Their study, in The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, published by Elsevier, also found that a subset of highly hypnotizable individuals may be more likely to experience high levels of postoperative pain.

King Cove residents and others say the road is needed so that villagers can get adequate urgent medical care in Anchorage, 600 miles to the east. Opponents say the project is more about transporting fish from King Cove’s major business, a salmon processor.

The bacterial phyla Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes, and Firmicutes were associated with increased muscle strength; however, some Firmicutes bacteria were also linked to reduced muscle strength.
Conclusions
Overall, the current study established a connection between gut microbiome composition and muscle strength. Moreover, the researchers introduced a novel method to investigate the effect of gut microbiomes on different physiological factors while eliminating the potential impact of individual genetic variations.

Blueberries and green beans
Both blueberries and green beans – 11th and 12th, respectively, on this year’s Dirty Dozen – had troubling concentrations of organophosphate insecticides, pesticides that can harm the human nervous system. Nine out of 10 samples of each of the popular foods had residues of pesticides – with some showing traces of up to 17 different pesticides.

Key Takeaways
Reducing sugar intake in the diet by substituting artificial sweeteners such as aspartame is a common health recommendation.
Studies, however, are pointing to risks and disadvantages of consuming artificial sweeteners.
In particular, adverse health effects of aspartame are being reported in the areas of diabetes, fertility, anxiety, and cancer risk, according to research.
The use of non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame as food additives has increased over the past three decades as a result of dietary recommendations to reduce sugar intake—with the blessing of the FDA. But that may be changing.

Harlan Crow, the Texas billionaire who lavished expensive trips and gifts on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, donated more than $35,000 to Utah candidates and campaign committees for Republicans and Democrats since 1994.
Supreme Court justices are required to disclose gifts valued at more than $415. Thomas claims Crow is a close personal friend, and he was advised he was not required to reveal those gifts.
An analysis of Federal Election Commission financial disclosures by The Salt Lake Tribune finds Crow has donated $35,600 to Utah federal candidates since 1994.
Crow donated $8,100 to Lee's first reelection campaign in 2016 and $8,700 to Lee's 2022 race against Evan McMullin.
In 2011, Crow gave $5,000 to former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman's unsuccessful presidential campaign.
In 2009, Crow gave $500,000 to the conservative activist group Liberty Central founded by Ginni Thomas.
