2023.06.04 00:16 Fun-Watch-7614 Moving from Canada (Qc) to Spain! ADVICE PLEASE
askspain AskCanada Hello! This is my first time ever posting on Reddit.
Long story short, I was born here in Canada but I grew up in Tunisia from like 3 years old til 14, then I came back to Canada. Now I am 22, still in University. I have no idea what I'm doing with my life. All I know is that I genuinely hate it here, I've always hated it here and I would like to move somewhere else and Spain has been my dream country since forever, plus I'm fluent ish in Spanish so that should be helpful. Anyways, I am currently enrolled in Sociology (wanted psychology but I wasn't accepted and it seemed like the closest thing to it but it isn't and I hate it). I'd like to know, as a student, still not close to finishing my degree, can I just move to a university in Spain and complete my bachelor's there or restart in Psychology or anything like that? is it possible? Will I be wasting many years?
Main reasons why I hate it here is the weather and people (not all ofc). As I mentioned above, I grew up in Tunisia, a country with a hot weather. I spent my entire childhood near beautiful beaches, beautiful historical cities, people there are very friendly and warm. I woulda moved back there if the country wasn't struggling economically and shit. Canada is completely different. It just feels grey. It's very cold, and I am very affected by weather changes. I feel lazy and unproductive and overall down whenever it's cold/cloudy (which is most of the time). Plus I find it extremely hard to befriend new people, it feels like most friend groups have been friends since childhood. At an adult age it's hard to find new friends and whenever I make plans with people they never happen. It's just so lonely here. I'm straying from the main subject but I wanted to explain where I'm coming from. Keep in mind this is just my personal experience. Nothing objective about it. I'm sure other people are thriving here.

2023.06.04 00:04 colourcodedcandy How busy do the “fun” places get during the day in Cambridge? Where can I dog/people watch?
Just moved out here this week from 2 years in Philly. Cambridge/Boston is so far the smallest city I’ve lived in (or rather will live in).
It’s beautiful! I’ve been walking around East Cambridge/Inman/Central the past couple days and noticed there isn’t as much foot traffic even on weekend afternoons compared to some of the other cities. I was wondering if this is common or just a factor of weird weather the past couple days? Cambridge St seems to be pretty busy all day however.
Is there a busy place I can spend an afternoon walking around/window shopping/sitting and reading and dog/people-watching in Cambridge? For those who’ve been, my favorite thing to do in Philly during good weather was to walk on Walnut St and read in Rittenhouse Square. Or even the many squares and parks (specifically perhaps Tompkins Square or Bryant Park) in NYC. It’s sunny, busy yet calm enough to sit and read, and I have access to everything within a block or two. I get that skyscrapers aren’t going to be as prevalent and that’s ok, but also happy to hop on over across the river to Boston but thought I’d ask here first.
Edit: doesn’t have to be a park! Open to anything

2023.06.03 23:59 caledenx I hate going outside.
Summer is here in my city and i've not been doing so well mentally. I'm a nurse & work 12hr shifts, sometimes overnight. It is mentally and physically exhausting. the things i see at work and the gruelling shifts and depressing situations, I leave work mentally drained. On my days off, all I want to do is lay down in my safe space (my bedroom) and just lay under my covers and relax and recharge. However, mentally I am struggling, I feel like i'm wasting my life, i go to work and it takes the life out of me, then I come home and have mo desire to leave my home, Even though I know i should. Even just stepping outside for a walk due to the nice weather feel's overwhelming, but l know that isolation is making me feel worse mentally. The nice weather makes me feel even more guilty that instead of stepping out, I dim my lights and chill in my room. I'm not sure how to motivate myself to have the desire to want to go outside & do something other than hiding in my room. I genuinely enjoy being home in my bubble. Idk what to do

2023.06.03 23:43 iron07maiden A highly fulfilling Saturday
My cup feels full: I am content with my life and my friendships as a sober person.
It's been almost a year-and-a-half off the sauce, and I'll admit, the last few months were difficult pushing through the signals in my brain to drink. But I'm so glad I stayed strong.
I'd like to share my Saturday thus far for anyone wondering if quitting is worth it. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I woke up at 5:30 this morning -- like every morning nowadays -- and sat on my patio enjoying delectable, local coffee while taking in the cool spring air. I journaled a bit and drew the city skyline. I basked in the first light of day as the sun peeked over the mountains.
And then I prepared to bicycle downtown to our city's first farmer's market of the year. I've been looking forward to this all winter; it was a record-breaking winter and we rarely saw the sun.
I arrived just as the market was opening and the crowds were still tame. Right away I bought a homemade huckleberry danish and sat in the sunshine savoring every damn bite. When I used to drink, I'd never treat myself to food like this because I'd "save my calories" for drinking. What a fool's errand.
With all this extra money I have from no longer drinking (and all the silly shit that comes with it, like DoorDash-ing), I purchased: a hand-carved wooden spoon for my oatmeal in the mornings; a fresh loaf of wheat sourdough; a new Emotional Support Plant for my tiny porch; and handmade pappardelle pasta.
A friend joined me and we had the loveliest of times strolling together, browsing all the booths, and engaging in stimulating conversation.
While at the market, my most important friend -- who's sober -- texted asking if I'd like to meet for coffee on the patio of a local shop. "Yes please!" I replied, and shortly thereafter I set off through the heart of my beautiful city on my bicycle to join my sober friend.
By the time I arrived to the coffee shop, it was 72 degrees, breezy, and still brilliantly sunny.
My sober friend and I felt adventurous and ordered drinks completely different than our usual, and we were both giddy like children over how good they tasted! She invited me to her house a few blocks away to come see how her garden is progressing, and I eagerly accepted.
When I arrived at her house, her and her partner's dogs greeted me as if I was their favorite human, and I felt overwhelmed with joy and love and connectedness -- words I never would have used to describe life when I was drinking. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I'm home now and I had a huge, fresh salad for lunch. I'm about to Skype with my long-distance partner, and tomorrow I'm marching in the city's Pride parade.
Life has never been so lovely. When I drank, I was perpetually terrified to change for fear of missing out -- but I was really missing out on the most essential elements of life by continuing to drink. I'll never go back.
There will be hard times, sure. But I'll never, ever give up the chances life has given me since quitting. May we all weather the storms of life together, SD community, so that the sun might shine a bit brighter on the other side.

2023.06.03 23:20 ConfusedGuy203 Hall of attainment crashes
I've been using this LO for some time and made some changes to it(not mid playthrough of course) and most recently i've been getting constant crashes when going in either hall of attainment or hall of countenance, but hall of elements is loading fine. I think the problem is with the loading and not the area itself since loading a save of a character that's already inside works just fine, it's going through the door that makes it so at the ending of the loading the game just freezes. I thought it was The Magical College Bundle, but thats been on my LO for quite a while and that never happened before, so either some mod that wasn't there before is causing it or some updated caused it. Here's the LO, with the most recent additions having an * at the end of their name and the + before if they're a patch for other mods. Any advice for the LO in general is welcome as well :)

2023.06.03 22:06 yungtruffle Should I stop now? I want to give up my full-ride to medical school.
tl;dr The process of getting to medical school has changed me drastically for the worse and I struggle to envision finishing medical school and becoming a doctor. I am extremely empty. I do not want to continue despite having a full ride but I only feel pressured to stay by family and society.
Hello everyone,
First off, you are about to hear someone complain about attending medical school on a full-ride. I'm sorry for those I offend in doing so because I know this is a great opportunity for many - just not sure if for me.
I’m not sure if this is the right audience to address my concerns to but as fellow medical students, I assume this would be the only group that may understand my ‘dilemma’. I’m currently an M1 at a well-regarded program attending school on pretty much a full ride. Despite a few things I hate about my school and the city I live in I have pretty much all the necessities I need as a student to succeed. I’ve got a nice apartment, fairly good friends, and I’ve been doing research in a competitive field with some success so far. That said, all joy I once had for attending medical school and being a physician has left me slowly by slowly throughout the year and I find myself constantly depressed, traumatized by the path it took to get here, and frequently having suicidal ideations or thoughts of a very much welcomed untimely death at my young age (e.g. getting mugged, car crash, terminal illness). I know there are a combination of factors that are contributing to how I feel right now but mainly I can sum them up to hating the person I had to create to bring me to this point of perceived “success”. I say this not to brag by any means – but I was fortunate to be accepted to multiple medical schools and have multiple enticing scholarship options before choosing this school. I should be happy about that – but even before I matriculated to medical school, I had frequent thoughts of wishing I would die before I matriculated because at least I could let go of the expectations from friends, family, and the world that keeps telling me to “push on” through things that I feel like are taking more away from me than are contributing to me. I miss the days before I started my pre-med journey when the simplest things in life would satisfy me. I didn’t care about the weather - I liked clouds, I liked rain, I liked sun, I liked warmth, I liked cold. Now where I live the climate is so awfully different from my home, I’m convinced I cannot take it anymore and need to get away. I used to not think much of where live, if I have a quiet place to study and read books/play video games. Now my family cannot stop commenting on how shitty the city I live in is (compared to others I could have lived in), and frankly I’ve started to agree with them (which is unfortunate considering I’m supposedly stuck here for another 3 years). The path to medical school has taken so much of who I am away all to build this persona of a perfect medical student and future physician who I’m not even sure I want to be anymore. Everything is expectations, everything is comparison. It seems like the payout for all of my suffering is a nice home, a car, and a steady job with trips to the country club every now and then. Maybe nice toys like watches and vacations in between an awful work schedule. I’ve sold my soul to replace everything I’ve lost with material things being my only solace in the future because my spirit is dead. I have lost the false sense of fulfillment for taking care of patients because I feel like they could have been taken care of by someone else who enjoys this field more and doesn’t feel like they died inside to achieve their goal of being a physician. Frankly speaking – I feel like whether I become a doctor or not will not really do anything for the world, it certainly is not doing anything for me except making me a worse person by the day. Sometimes in life, less is so much more and I often wake up wishing I never succeeded so much to get here in the first place.
I can barely focus on my studies anymore as I feel like I am on a speeding train headed for wall with me in the conductor’s booth. I don’t feel connected to my friends or family. I used to love writing but have given that up all together, because it resurfaces feelings, I am not sure I can handle. I am constantly thinking about death because I don’t want to mindlessly jump through hoops anymore to achieve goals that only leave me feeling like a shell. I don’t care about research (which I used to love). I hate to say it, but I find my empathy for others lacking when I care barely get out of bed or even get out of my own head to stop thinking about this horrific, ungrateful, self-centered person I’ve become. Perhaps I am ungrateful, but the funny thing is being ungrateful is the only way I made it this far. One year out from STEP 1, I’m not even sure if I can muster the focus to study and perform well on it. I am just constantly exhausted by the weight of the world. I feel like if I fail then I’m going to kill myself if not physically than spiritually even though I already feel dead inside. I spend every day looking at educational paths in life I wish I pursued rather than medicine. However, I come from an immigrant family that will essentially never let me live down the fact that I left a massive medical scholarship to make less than 80k a year in graduate school or as a professor. At this point I feel like I have two options:
- Accept that the old me is dead and is never coming back and continue pursuing forward as a shell of my former self. This would satisfy those around me and society, but I am almost certain I won’t be the same.
- Take a chance to find meaning in life once again and potentially finding joy in less. Switch to graduate school and be content.
With the way I feel right now I don’t think a person like me belongs in medical school or really should be here in the first place. Weakness gets eaten alive here and I’m so broken down I don’t care enough to fight back anymore. My ambitions now are completely fake. Hiding from the fact that I don’t want to be here and I am frankly tired with life and unexcited for the future. Should I stop before it gets worse?

2023.06.03 21:47 AudienceParticular22 Middle to Northern CA trip - suggestions
Hi, Please excuse the broadness of my question here. I'll try to give enough detail to make it answerable.
I've been to Socal a few times. LA once, San Diego twice. Had a good time. Particularly liked La Jolla in SD, where we stayed the last time. Hopefully that helps with the "vibe" we like. We tend to prefer quiet areas, ideally with good dining, and despite not being old, we're not partiers and usually get along just fine amongst affluent senior residents, haha. We also really like to be near beaches/water. We like to be nea visit bars, restaurants, cities, etc but would prefer quiet and subdued over active and loud in terms of lodging.
We're considering a late December trip somewhere, and mid to Northern CA is a contender. We'd like to see the Napa Valley, and I'd really like to drive the PCH down through Big Sur. I'd like to visit some of the rocky beaches, state parks, etc. We'd potentially make some specific, curated stops in the Bay area, but SF doesn't really appeal to me as a place to set up home base for the week. We would definitely be renting a car. I know this isn't an ideal weather time, but it's the only week we can do logistically. Due to the weather, I don't think we'd go too far north, as from what I can tell, it just gets more rainy and stereotypically Pacific North Western this time of the year as you approach Oregon.
Now for my question: given this info about our preferences and the time of year, does anyone have recommendations as to areas we'd want to look into for lodging? We'd be looking for middle of the road lodgings price wise. Probably not under 100/night, definitely not over 250ish/night.
Carmel by the Sea seems no more than a couple hours away from any of the places we'd visit, and it looks like our vibe, although I know it's small and it doesn't look like there's even a ton of basics like restaurants and coffee shops.
I'd love to hear input from others who knows this region of the country.

2023.06.03 21:44 scroogesdaughter [IWantOut] 26F Junior software developer UK -> preferably EU
Hi everyone! Love this subreddit. I'm a junior software developer from London, UK who really wants to live and work in Europe. I have Portuguese citizenship through my grandfather (currently still in the legal process to achieve this, I will get my passport and citizen card probably in 6 months - the entire process has probably taken about 3 years, and I hired a good lawyer).
Like many, I'm pretty burnt out and disappointed by life in the UK. I feel like I have little to no future here, and I don't like the 'culture' of the UK - I've never felt like I fit in, despite being born here. I don't see myself buying a house and 'settling' here, even if that was possible for me at the moment. London, though a great city in many ways, is extremely expensive, and after renting in London for three years with my former partner, I've scarcely been able to save much of my salary due to the high rents. You just work all the time, so don't always have time to enjoy the city, and having a social life is another expense. I also don't have my desired salary currently, as I'm a junior developer, not mid level or senior (yet).
So, my plan is to work a while longer in my current job to build up more experience and work on my skills, also learning a new language, while applying for developer jobs in EU countries, as that's where I ideally want to live. Thanks to my Portuguese citizenship I'm assuming I won't need a work visa, so I'm looking at Austria, Germany (Berlin is good for developer roles, though expensive), Sweden, Switzerland and France. I love Portugal, Italy and Spain, but developer salaries there aren't too great, and COL can be higher in the cities e.g Barcelona, Madrid, Lisboa. I would prefer to be somewhere with sun, but I loved Austria when I visited Vienna in winter, so wouldn't be opposed to living there despite the cold weather. I really love the different cultures and just the 'vibe', I guess, of Europe.
As my grandfather is Portuguese (from the Azores, which I visited for the first time in May, it's beyond beautiful) I was brought up with a lot of exposure to European culture. However, I'm also open to moving to another English speaking country, e.g Australia or Canada, though both are very far away, and even the US for the high developer salaries, though I have to say the US definitely isn't my desired place to live long term.Any advice on deciding which country to explore immigration to at the present moment, and any experiences you've all had with the countries I've mentioned, would be great, thank you!

2023.06.03 21:10 tobyfromtheeast First time in the Balkans and I loved it! TRIP REPORT
Hi all, I am posting this as a trip report more than anything else so enjoy the read :)
I have recently returned from a 9 days long trip to the Balkans. I let my excitement calm down over the past week or so and I am now ready to share my experience! I will be discussing the budget at the end!
WHERE?
I visited 3 countries: Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia
WHEN?
8th until the 17th of May
ITINERARY
8th-11th in Pristina, Prizren and Peje in Kosovo
12-15th in Budva, Montenegro
16th-17th in Belgrade, Serbia
The plan was that there was no plan. I knew what is where and what cool things I can do but unfortunately I didn't enjoy good weather as it was raining for 7 out of 9 days. In Kosovo I travelled with two friends from Korea which I will mention later. We had a rental car from Pristina Airport which allowed us to go around the country easily and allowed us to avoid places with worse weather.
As I was not travelling alone for parts of the trip, I was flexible with activities which unfortunately were very limited due to the aforementioned weather conditions. Whenever we could we were out and about.
THE EXPERIENCE
The highlight of the trip for me was definitely Kosovo. Amazing place so different to any country I visited before! Beautiful villages, cities, nature and all of that within reach as the country is small. It makes for a good short trip especially if you have a car, which is very easy to get! Prizren was our favourite city. Good hikes, beautiful views and good food! We also stumbled upon a locally owned liquor store where we bought our first bottle of Rakia, lovely owner!
On the last day we returned our car in the morning and took a bus from the airport to the city centre from where we took a bus all the way to Budva, Montenegro passing through beautiful Albanian mountains on the way south.
I had high expectations for Budva and Montenegro in general. I knew the weather was not going to be great but I tried to make the most out of it. The bus from Kosovo arrived around 1am so I already knew my next day is going to be slow. On the first day I appreciated the beautiful surroundings. That is also the day when my experience started to go south. I got scammed out of 40euros by a taxi driver for a 15 minute ride, why does it always happen in beach destinations? I spent the day swimming in Sveti Stefan, drowning the sorrows of loosing 40 euros. The water wasn't warm but it was the only day of sunshine I had so I had to enjoy it, it was my first time at the Adriatic Sea after all!
I quickly realised that 3 days in Budva are too many especially considering the weather. After my nice swimming/sunbathing day I found myself mostly just strolling around the Old Town(which did surprise me in a good way!). I decided that going to Kotor or anywhere else in the area doesn't make much sense and I will leave it for another trip later this summer. I spent my evenings at the beach next to Old Town, drinking and listening to waves crashing against the walls until late hours of the night every night. That was probably the nicest thing about my stay in Budva, as for a person that doesn't do partying on trips like this, it was a pretty boring and empty tourist town.
Last day in Budva was the bus-catching day. I read a lot about bus services in the Balkans so I was prepared to just let things happen the way they should. And so my ticket was for a 12:30 bus from Budva to Bar. The bus didn't arrive until ~13:00 and I was told by the driver this is not the correct bus despite it being clearly stated on the ticket that it was. Happens, I thought. I asked the ''bus station person'' what to do and they just put me on the next but to Bar at around 13:30, which was completely fine by me.
Why would you go from a tourist town of Budva to a tourist town of Bar some may ask? Well, for the past two years I dreamed about experiencing the Belgrade-Bar railway journey, rumoured to be one of the Great Train Journeys. And so I was finally there, in a random restaurant/bacafe next to a very Soviet-looking Bar Train Station. I bought my ticket for a couchette in a 6-bed compartment for ~24 euros one-way all the way to Beograd Centar. It was 16:00 and my train, Lovcen, didn't leave until 19:00. I spent that time looking for an ATM, eating at a Burger King with a parking lot the size of a country and chilling next to the station, great atmosphere in that area! Very quiet and for someone who hasn't travelled to the east it was very surreal to see palm trees, soviet architecture and Cyrillic all around next to each other. I felt like it was a good time to say bye to Montenegro for now.
The ride was incredible. Yes, if you, like me, can't sleep anywhere outside of your own bed properly you're most likely not going to sleep on this train either. But the sleepless night was worth every minute of the breathtaking scenery of the Montenegrin Mountains as we climbed higher and higher. Having come in May, I only had about ~2 hours of daylight to look out the window and I made sure to not loose a single second of it. If you ever thought about taking the trip, I couldn't recommend it enough. Yes it's not the fastest, most comfortable way to get to Belgrade, but it was an experience I will not forget!
Takeaways from Montenegro:
- do not use ATM's other than the ones from a bank which name I don't remember but it started with an e. All other ATMs charge 5eur for every transaction no matter how much money you want to withdraw. That is another way that I lost ~40 euros.
- Restaurants add service charge not on the bill but by word of mouth which confused me many times but I complied since I didn't know the rules. If that is indeed customary then I would avoid pricier restaurants as the charge waiters were quoting was about 20% of the bill, way too much and a cold shower after Kosovo where I ate a 2-course meal with 2 of my friends for 14euros TOTAL.
- People gotta chill out, no need to get mad at a bus being late, its just the way it is, plan for that in advance and you will be perfectly fine
- More tourists than I expected, especially for May, the rainiest month
Next stop was the great city of Beograd. After my ~13hour train journey I arrived at Beograd Centar Station (confusing af!) at around 7:00am. My check-in time was 13:00 so I had a lot of time to kill even though I was already dead. I tried looking for a way to get to city centre because don't be mistaken, Belgrade Central Station is NOT in the centre. During my walk I found an exchange office which didn't scam me so I was off to a good start. With my 6000 dinars I strolled the city looking for food.
Later I saw the pedestrian, ''tourist'' area, the Castle, the riverside and some random streets and local markets. Overall, though I may be biased because of lack of sleep, Belgrade felt a little bit boring. Yes, I saw many people out and about but it felt too quiet. Serbia on the other hand, I will have to visit again as the people and the culture intrigue me!
BUDGET
I got tickets from London Luton to Pristina, Kosovo for around £40 and back from Belgrade Airport to London Luton for £45. I didn't hold back on anything really. I was booking AirBnb's on the day of arrival usually especially in Kosovo.
Flights: £95
Car rental in Kosovo £135(fuel included, cost divided by 3 since I was with friends = £45)
AirBnb ~£90 in Kosovo
Budva accommodation ~£50
Belgrade accommodation ~£35
Train ticket from Bar to Belgrade in a sleeping car - £20
Scam ATM's - £40
Food is a tricky one since I didn't exactly track my expenses but I had a lot of seafood and kebabs on the trip. I would say ~£300 for the 9 days. Keep in minds I never cooked a single meal it's all for eating out.
All in all I spent about ~£600 for the 9 days of exploring which works out to between £65-70 per day. Not bad but I know next time what to do to lower the cost. I am fully aware this trip could have ended up £200 or more cheaper but I am satisfied with what I got.
Thoughts? Tips on next time in the area? I definitely need to go back, especially to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. Hope you had an interesting read!
