2023.06.07 14:47 VeryMentallyStable Are there any novels/series that are reminiscent of Dark Souls, or FromSoft games in general?
I just really like the vibe of those worlds, the sort of bleakly beautiful, gothic setting they all have. Despite how desolate they feel in many ways, I also find them oddly comforting worlds to be in, I guess it’s something about the contrast of the cold, shattered world and the constant, cozy fire motif. I would just really like to find a series or book that puts you in world that feels so steeped in history, but that it’s also a world that has moved on from its remaining inhabitants.
I should also mention, just because I know someone is almost certainly going to mention both of these, but I’ve read both The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and The Dark Tower series by Steven King, so I’m looking for suggestions outside of that, hopefully even something that’s more sword and sorcery type fantasy like Dark Souls and Elden Ring.

2023.06.07 14:47 Consistent-Spinach02 Have i gained weight since lockdown or aged? Struggling with this
Male aged 33)
I’m 6ft tall ectomorph body type (long legs short torso lean looking)
I was always 11.4 stone around that really lean/small framed like a teenager and a small head size with it with clear white skin
Used to be a waiter and worked at football stadiums (which required a lot of standing and walking 3/4 days a week) so that kept me slim I’m guessing
▪️March 2020 first lockdown: I was the same as always then it got to about 4-5 months in when I noticed legs got bigger and face went puffy/blaoted. So I lost 6lbs by starving (but no exercise due to lockdown) and it didn’t change a thing
▪️ January 2021: I spent 6 weeks beforehand eating whatever I wanted in a 3 hour eating window and January came and I looked my former self again
. Also in March 2021 went to my nans funeral and ppl said ‘you haven’t aged a day in 10 years’ (was funny as I was a heavy weed smoker and a scotch drinker every night and have been for 5 years at that point) but I looked myself lean as always
▪️ July 2021: I felt different, and when I looked at myself in a reflection I’d aged 5 years since March, i gained weight looking at myself but the scale still showed the same 6lbs loss so I hadn’t gained weight or lost it)
▪️2022: stayed similar looking still but noticed my calves getting bigger but body stayed the same. So I decided to drop another 6lbs by starving mostly and some light jogging and I didn’t look any slimmer at all
(In 2019 I’d lost 6 lbs once and went very thin to the point I had to gain a little back so why hasn’t it worked this time)
ever since the same pants I wore at my nans funeral March 2021 are way too tight but waist and body is the same and my face has more skin or the head size is bigger idk
Keep doing 10k steps everyday for 6 weeks

2023.06.07 14:47 ThrowRAquible Is this what savings are supposed to be for?
Hi all, may well just need to write this situation out to understand it myself.
I'm in the army which has allowed be to save a substantia,l in my case, amount of money. I take home about 25k a year and saved up around 60k spread over different pots( isa, Lisa, easy access, premium bonds and have a sipp also but haven't included that )
What I want to do is drop about 10k to 12k on a camper van to travel and take part in the human experience.
What I "think" I "should" do is keep saving towards a house.
What I could use as an actual deposit would be closer to 30k though as I'd like to keep an emergency fund and keep some investments going long term.
Problem is although the deposit is there mortgage payments and actual running of a house would be a massive hit monthly, and I wouldn't even be able to live in my house 90% of the time as I'm based in Essex And buying Lincolnshire way.
I'm 28 and conscious mortgages get harder the older you get. My wage isn't going to move much in the next few years until my promotion comes in. Army can't strike and army wages don't move but that's politics.
Should I spend the money now or keep building for the house, I'm a bit stuck. No debts or loans, own my car. Have a missus but no kids planned for the next few years.
I know you might think it's a personal choice but I know there's a fair few old timers here that could offer some words of wisdom. As much as I'd love a garden with a vegetable patch reality is I wouldn't be spending much time in it.

2023.06.07 14:47 Beginning-Fig-4117 Seeking Insights on Research Environment at RMIT - Need Advice!
Fu Hi fellow Redditors,
I hope you're all doing well! I'm reaching out to the community today as I'm in the process of considering a research opportunity at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) in Australia. I'm excited about the prospect, but I wanted to gather some insights and advice about the research environment at RMIT before making a final decision.
Specifically, I would love to hear from anyone who has experience or knowledge about the research culture, facilities, support systems, and overall environment at RMIT. Here are a few questions I have:
How would you describe the research culture at RMIT? Is there a strong emphasis on collaboration and interdisciplinary work? Are the research facilities well-equipped and up-to-date? How accessible are they for students and researchers?
What kind of support systems are in place for research students, such as mentoring programs, funding opportunities, or career development resources?
How would you rate the overall support and guidance provided by supervisors and faculty members?
Are there any notable research projects or initiatives that are currently ongoing at RMIT? I believe that hearing from those who have firsthand experience or knowledge about RMIT's research environment will provide valuable insights that will help me make an informed decision. Your honest feedback, personal experiences, or any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, if there are any other aspects or considerations that I should be aware of when evaluating the research environment at RMIT, please feel free to share.
Thank you in advance for your time and contributions. I'm looking forward to engaging with the community and learning from your experiences.

2023.06.07 14:47 CMDR_Dozer Rule the waves 3 and Ultimate Admiral.
Hi, I own neither of the games in the title. I am very much in to naval history and at the mo reading another book about Jutland and the build up to the battle. I'm looking for someone who has played both games to give me their opinion on the campaign and which is bettemore realistic/has better AI etc. If you'd rather not air your opinion publicly feel free to pm me. I am interested in a new naval game, not afraid of basic graphics, vertical learning curves or tough games. Also do either games utilise mines? Thanks in advance.

2023.06.07 14:46 saint_dolly_parton Pets in condos
We recently signed a lease in a condo building that allows pets up to 25 pounds. This means I can finally bring my cat from my parents who have been watching her for 3 years, but our landlord (the owner of the unit) said she would prefer no pets.
Now, from what I can tell about Ontarios tenant laws, the only way she could refuse pets is if the condo has rules against them (which in this case wouldn’t apply). However, the pet registration form has sections for the unit owner’s signature. Could we technically submit it without her signature? Or would that be invalid since the condo rules require a complete form?
I’ve sent her an email with no response, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

17F here. I spend a lot of free time on Reddit and am worried about the upcoming blackout because other than AO3/YouTube/looking at random articles or Pikachu pictures, IDK what to do on the Internet/with my life (other than finals studying.) However, the blackout might make me spend more time on other platforms or drawing. Anyone else feel this way?

2023.06.07 14:45 nixtarx Boost week question?
Is it done different times in different places? Or do franchises maybe have some leeway into when it happens? I'm driving later today after taking five days off, and it seems like someone would have mentioned it to me. Also, we had a week of half-price pizzas about six weeks ago. It's a college town - maybe they wanted to get it out of the way while school was still in?
Just want to know what I'm up against before my shift starts...
EDIT: it occurs to me that the half-price promo was carryout only

2023.06.07 14:45 Time-Pollution-8850 Theory of mind
Hi guys,
Firstly, I am quite new to this subreddit and I have found it really helpful in terms of practical advice and also recognising that there are lots of us going through similar challenges. Thank you!
My son is 5, diagnosed at 3 and is doing pretty well at school (UK system). He has some extra support but is verbal, very good at reading (hyperlexia I think) and is starting to build some small friendships. We count ourselves very lucky.
We had a meeting at the school yesterday and we agreed that whilst he may know the answers to questions asked of him that he may not see the point in responding due to the lack of "theory of mind". I have heard about this theory before and filed it away in the "that's interesting but I see no way to implement this knowledge on a day to day basis" section of my memory.
The more I have thought about it since the meeting, the more it seems to me that this explains a lot of my boy's behaviour - not really responding to questions and a lack of apparent empathy at times despite being a kind and affectionate child most of the time.
I would be really interested to know what you think about this theory and also any practical tips on how to develop this aspect of his understanding in school and in general life / relationships!
Thanks a lot :)

2023.06.07 14:45 Mersnek My niece confided in me and I promised I wouldn't tell anyone
My 10 year old niece confided in me that her dad used a belt to hit her open palms because she stole his special gluten and dairy free brownies. She laughed it off saying how he must really love his brownies. She made me promise not to tell anyone and said when her mum (my sister) found out, he got told off for an hour about it. Although she laughed it off, my niece also said it was scary and now I feel conflicted as I don't know what to do with this upsetting information. I know my sister has covered for him in the past (when he lost his job, or stayed out all night drinking during Covid) because she doesn't want to make him look bad to our side of the family so I don't think she'd appreciate me knowing this. He's from Ghana originally and his dad used corporal punishment on him growing up so he sees it as a way to teach an unforgettable lesson. My sister doesn't approve of this type of punishment at all. I don't want to meddle or get involved in their private family life but I also feel a duty as a caring person in my niece's life to ensure her safety. I don't think he's aggressive or really dangerous but then I never would have expected this either. There's also the possibility my niece isn't telling the truth but I doubt that.

2023.06.07 14:45 YorubawithAdeola Tips to help you while learning Yorùbá
For a beginner, learning Yorùbá might be challenging at the onset, especially with the way the voice is modulating while speaking.
These are few tips that can help you when you are starting to learn.
- Yorùbá is a tonal language, each word has tones associated with them which differentiate meanings
- Yorùbá does not have past tense marker, just like we have "d", "ed" in English. we indicate present tense and future but past tense is indicated using the time of action or through the context of the sentence.
- Yorùbá is not gender sensitive when it comes to pronoun. For example. Ó fẹ́ jẹun - - - - - He or she wants to eat Ó fẹ́ kàwé - - - - - He or she wants to read
Do you need an interactive class where you can ask questions and relate with a native speaker of Yorùbá and also a tutor. Then kindly reach out to me.

2023.06.07 14:45 themediumplaced TIFUpdate by failing to put on socks and ruining a wedding
This is an update to a previous TIFU I posted a few days ago. If you didn’t read the first one, I’ll do my best to summarize it.
I stayed up late getting my bags packed for a wedding I was the best man in this past weekend. I ended up going to bed in the early hours of the morning and accidently overslept to the point that I woke up on the alarm telling me it was time to leave for the airport.
As I was throwing on my clothes as fast as I could, I was hopping around trying to get a pair of socks on. After getting one on successfully, I came down awkwardly on my ankle on my last hop, crashing to my floor and smacking my eye off the tile.
Unfortunately, as I was in a rush, I had no opportunity to grab an ice pack or anything cold to try to avoid a black eye. By the time I got to the plane, I had a purple lump the size of a golf ball covering half my eye. By the time I got to the hotel several hours later, my eye looked like someone stuck a plum on top of it.
Despite getting a decent amount of ice on it during my travels and the night before, I still had a nasty-looking shiner the next morning. It was completely swollen shut and we had the rehearsal dinner that night.
After breaking the unsightly news to the bride and groom (the former pissed, the latter pissing himself laughing), we decided that even though there would still be a ton of swelling, makeup would be the best option to cover it for the rehearsal dinner and wedding the day after. They would just do what they could to hide my Quasimodo eye as much as possible.
This seemed like a decent solution and the bride even let the makeup artist doing her makeup to fix me up. By the time she was done, you could barely notice the bruising (though the swelling was a
very different story). I was even lucky that my eye could open up a crack by the time the rehearsal dinner started.
Unfortunately, I noticed my eye pretty quickly swell back shut after the makeup was applied. It was around the same time that my eye started to itch like crazy underneath the makeup and while I tried to ignore it, I ended up needing to take the makeup off halfway through dinner and taking a Benadryl. I had discovered that I am allergic to makeup.
Now that I knew how badly I would react to makeup, I told my best friend, the groom, that there was no way I could wear makeup for the actual wedding, offering to wear sunglasses or an eyepatch instead. While I wasn’t there for the conversation, I was later told that the bride was really upset, but said in no uncertain terms that she “wasn’t going to have a f*cking pirate in her wedding.”
When I woke up on Sunday,
the swelling had gone down a bit, but the bruising had gotten much darker. While makeup would have been ideal for then, there was no way I’d be able to deal with the allergic reaction I was going to have. So, I showed up to the reception with a black tux and even blacker eye. Things seemed to go off without a hitch for the most part, though I saw the bride’s smile fade a bit when me made eye contact while she was walking down the eye. There was also some insistence that I turn the bruised side of my face away for most of the pictures, although the groom featured it prominently in our pictures with the other groomsmen. I really didn’t think it ended up being that big of a deal until one of the bridesmaids pulled me aside and cursed me out for not doing more to hide it. Evidently, the bride was really upset and had shed some tears in the bathroom after the pictures saying I had ruined them.
Now, several days later, I texted my best friend to see how the honeymoon is going and was told that things are good but his wife is pretty sad about how the wedding didn’t meet her expectations and my face was a big reason why. If it makes her feel any better, I am also unhappy that I look like I panda.
TL;DR: I gave myself a black eye putting socks on and ruined a wedding as a result.

2023.06.07 14:45 Conscious-Group Is Undercover’s new line worth $130 a set?
Undercover has been the standard in quality for some time, but the new prices gave me pause.
One retailer was selling the new 60mm aggressive set of 4 for $60
Checked another store and it was $65
Worth it? In some ways I can justify it knowing they would last me a year or more at my use. Just seems like sticker shock… maybe inflation? Should we get used to wheels costing this much?
