3.9 gpa, 521 MCAT, 2400 research hours (3 first author, 1 second author publication), 700 clinical hours, 100 shadowing hours.
I know my list is top heavy, but I'm having trouble determining which 'mid-tier' schools would be a good fit. At the moment, I'm looking to live on a coast, pref. in an urban area. What additional schools would all of you recommend I add to the list below?
Here is my current list (note: trying to exclude everything that requires the Casper / preview)
NYU Grossman

Harvard
Mt. Sinai
Cleveland Clinic
UCSF
UCSD
UC Irvine
Kaiser Permanente

2023.05.27 01:11 rennyyy853 Where can I get tested for ADHD in California without my parents knowing?
I’m 19M and I would like to know how I can get an ADHD check in California without my parents knowing. I still live with them, and I will be moving out soon to go to a University, but to be very honest I never feel like they help me with anything and make things worse instead.
For the past couple of years, I was having the speculation that I might have some level of ADHD. It started with TikTok videos, which I brushed off because they literally list things everyone goes through. But as I went deeper into TikTok, people began listing symptoms that I felt were a bit more distinguishing, such as picking skin or angry outbursts. Whenever I’m doing some hard homework, sometimes my mind just goes to something that makes me angry and then I get angry inside my room just because of that thought. And I’ve been picking my skin and rubbing it on my lips since I was a baby, and I could never stop.
I decided to take a couple of ADHD tests online, and for all of them they ended with a score around 4/6, which was listed as “ADHD likely.” Of course, I didn’t think of this as a diagnosis, as each test has stated only a medical professional can diagnose you.
I’ve brought it up with some of my friends, and some of them say that self-diagnoses is okay, but I don’t think so. I want to get tested by a medical professional, but I’m scared if I do it under my family’s healthcare my parents will see it, and then say a bunch of stupid shit.
I have Kaiser Permanente (it’s a healthcare plan), and a couple of months ago one of my friends who also has Kaiser (18NB) had to start taking birth control. It was a private appointment and she believed her parents would not see anything since she was 18, but then her mom in some way found out. After that, my friend told me that they were never trusting Kaiser again, and that I should be careful with Kaiser so I don’t have a problem like them.
So does anyone in California know any other way how I can get an ADHD check? I really don’t want to spend a lot of money, but it’s something that I really want to get done.

2023.05.27 00:15 marsolee Update: “I’m sitting in my car crying… how is this meant to help??”
I don’t know how to properly post updates so I hope this works. In my
post a couple weeks ago, I ranted about taking this 15 minute computer game that was supposed to dictate if I had ADHD or not. A lot of you comforted, educated, and encouraged me so I really did feel better. Well, the psychologist/psychiatrist (I can’t remember which one) called me back and here’s a paraphrased summary of how that went…
“You’re average. You don’t display any symptoms of ADHD at all and we can’t diagnose or prescribe you with anything. Continue talking to your therapist, good luck”
Immediately I start bawling on the phone. I kind of went off on her, saying how unfair this whole process has been. I told her that every article, blog, video, about ADHD has been so relatable to the point of tears. She then tells me that social media has been spreading myths and rumors about ADHD and it’s affecting peoples’ diagnoses. Even more upset, I asked her how a 10 minute, 3 question “intake” and a 15 minute computer game was supposed to diagnose anybody, especially an adult woman who was homeschooled, grew up in a broken and religious home, and forced to mask all the time. She just said she was sorry I was frustrated and there was no further we could go. I told her my symptoms again, all my struggles. She did and said nothing helpful. She kept pushing that I just had anxiety, but I told her I’ve been treated for anxiety for 4 years now (lexapro) and it does help with some things, but not all of them. Again, she said there was nothing I could do without a formal diagnosis. If you’re in the Bay Area CA, maybe you can connect with this statement: fuck Kaiser Permanente.
I hung up, bawling next to my husband, ran to the bathroom and threw up. My husband said he’d heard of an out-of-network clinic and we should call them next because he agrees, my lexapro is helping but not with things like focus, memory loss, inability to sit still and work, etc etc. Still crying, I call them. I hate phone calls… but I called. She was so nice, she asked why I was upset and if I was safe. I told her everything that happened and she sounded surprised, she apologized for what I’d been through and we started the phone call screening. She asked probably about 3-4x the amount of questions Kaiser did, and even had me, my husband, and my dad fill out forms about my childhood and my last 6 months. She said after that, I’ll do 2 more one-hour assessments with a professional and after that, we’ll discuss the results, treatment plans, medication, and bi-weekly psych appointments to manage the meds.
I finally feel that we’re getting somewhere and that they’re taking into account my history, hobbies, symptoms, my whole life experience.
Of course they’re booked until July, so great- more waiting and I’m so impatient sometimes.
Just wanted to give an update and perhaps see if this new assessment plan sounds more normal to you all.
Thanks again so much for all the encouragement, I’ve never felt so heard, so understood before in my life.

2023.05.26 22:25 geekaz01d My insurer (Kaiser Permanente WA) says that I cannot fill my prescriptions at my local pharmacy/they won't count it toward my deductible. Also won't count other medical visits. Seems scammy to me?
Kaiser Permanente WA says that if I fill my prescription elsewhere they won't count it toward my deductible.
Cost to fill my prescriptions at the local pharmacy is 26% lower than the Kaiser Permanente pharmacy price. I had to call the KP pharmacy and make them quote the entire prescription to get a price. They were rather miffed when I didn't fill it immediately.
I was able to get this out of Member Services:
All drugs, supplies and devices must be obtained at a KFHPWA-designated pharmacy except for drugs dispensed for Emergency services or for Emergency services obtained outside of the KFHPWA Service Area, including out of the country. After the first fill, maintenance drugs are required to be filled at a KFHPWA Clinic or through KFHPWA mail order. Information regarding KFHPWA-designated pharmacies is reflected in the KFHPWA Provider Directory or can be obtained by contacting Kaiser Permanente Member Services.
They also don't want to count my out of network medical consultation to get my prescription in the first place toward my deductible.
This really feels like a scam.
The impression I am getting is that they have designed this system so as to take $1000/mth from us, plus make 25% on our prescriptions and charge us extra for any doctor's visits, but also ensure we never hit the deductible so they pocket the whole shebang.
I'm new to the US. I do not understand how any of this can be legal. Even if you dispense with the concept of universal healthcare and look at it as commerce, it is not in any way legitimate commerce.

2023.05.26 01:59 Similar-Guarantee605 Questions to ask the TMS clinic?
My final screening appointment, which I think is the appointment where they book the treatment schedule, is June 1st. It's a week away and I'm really so hopeful...
Being the geek that I am, I'm very curious. I plan to ask them what kind of machine they use, but what other types of questions should I ask? Not really familiar with TMS types and measurements... Maybe some of you could help me out here.
All I know is that it's rTMS, and is done in house at Kaiser Permanente. According to the tech they have two TMS chairs going more or less non stop at the clinic!
Is it standard for them to do brain imaging before TMS to determine what parameters to use? Or do only some clinics do that?
Also I'm a little nervous about accidentally saying something that might disqualify me, but I passed an initial screening (pre-referral) by my psychiatrist.
No implants, no seizure disorder. I've been hospitalized for depression many times, have bipolar disorder, PTSD, Aspergers, ADHD and substance use disorder (in remission, clean 14 months) on my chart.
I guess I'm just anxious something is going to mess it up for me for no particular reason, maybe TMS might help with my anxiety, too!
If this helps me I will do an extensive write up on my experience so that others may know there's a treatment that works for the disorder that robs you of all the reasons life is worth living.
Thanks again to everyone for making me feel so welcome here and being so encouraging. Thank you for sharing your struggles and successes here.

2023.05.25 22:14 Similar-Guarantee605 Ketamine if tms fails.. Good news
I have Kaiser Permanente (northern California) and I asked one of the therapists today if they do ketamine, in the off chance TMS is not effective for me, and she said that they do, but the prerequisites are strict.
Seeing as I've failed ECT (or more correctly, dropped out after 2-3 treatments inpatient, but they don't need to know that!), am on a MAOI and have tried antidepressants and combinations from every class (SSRI, TCA, MAOI, bupropion, Remeron, probably many others I'm forgetting, various non antidepressant augmentation agents).... I would be surprised if I didn't meet criteria!
Cuz it'd be like well, if I don't meet criteria, then who does?!
But I'm relieved to know they do treat people with ketamine. And I'm very optimistic about tms. The more I research it and the more actual tms patients I talk to, the more confident I am that it'll work for me.
I truly hope one day, those of us who have not had luck with standard treatments, or who are not willing or able to wait out a drug trial, get immediate access to treatments like TMS and ketamine, rather than having to fail out other treatments first. I'm just lucky in that I already meet criteria for tms. 😊

2023.05.25 17:25 pinkgemstone123 School List HELP!!! Struggling to narrow down with so many great programs available!
Hi! Any help with school list and narrowing things down or adding in things that might be a good fit that I missed would be appreciated! Feel like list is top heavy and too long. There's so many that sound great but I also don't want to waste money if I'm not a good fit. Thoughts appreciated! State Residency: NH for most of my life but have lived in MA since 2018
Undergrad: UW seattlle (freshman) BU (soph-senior)
Major: Human physiology
GPA: 3.81 combined (transfer student) but upward trend after transferring (soph-senior year 3.9 GPA at BU)
sGPA: 3.72
MCAT: 516
Research: 6000+hrs
- Freshman year – 80 hr
- Sophomore year – 596
- Junior-Senior year – 1250
- Gap year clinical research – 4100

Volunteering clinical/nonclinical: 1200/380 hrs
- Clinical – 1200+ at a charity I founded and run that works with local hospital child life programs, with approx 1000 expected next year
- Nonclinical—380
Other clinical experiences: - 4100 from clinical research job listed above (works with patients daily)
- 100 hours shadowing (low due to COVID but now observe physician-patient interactions daily and work with patients daily)
*Not listed in activity section obviously but talked about a bunch in application and PS, I grew up with a crazy medical history and have lifelong lived experience as a patient with a severe medical background so I don’t think there will be a huge worry about lack of experience and exposure to medical field*
Other activities listed: ESL teacher, childcare provider, coxswain for masters rowing team, ballet, competitive awards from work/college
School Priorities: Top priority: Research (but I don't want to do MD/PhD) and early clinical/patient exposure
Nice to have: Hands on learning model
Program Size: Like the idea of a small program but also went to two massive colleges so not a deal breaker
Other: Like the idea of MD/MS programs or other dual degrees that also incorporate research, bioethics, or focus on QA/QI healthcare initiatives to improve treatments or patient experiences. Supportive culture among students!

2023.05.24 22:55 dcelis96 UW vs Kaiser
Planning to move to Washington next year (preferably Seattle area & North of it) after graduating from Kaiser program in CA. I know, everyone's always trying to come here, but i have my reasons ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm trying to decide between working at Kaiser or UW.
Kaiser: It's unionized, im pretty much already in the system. However, they don't have ERs, so I'd be missing out on experiences like massive transfusions. Not sure what working at an urgent care lab is like.
UW: I hear they pay better, and having the ER experience would probably be good.
Anyone have experience at either? Maybe other hospitals are better? Interested in hearing your 2¢
Edit: Looks like Swedish/Providence is another good full hospital option. Potentially highest pay of the 3?

2023.05.23 22:34 stemcellgirlie Reapp review-- WAMC??
Hi Everyone!
I applied last cycle (2022-2023) and had 2 II -> 2 waitlists. I sent 3-4 update/continued interest letters to both schools, and letters of intent to one of them, but still haven't heard back.. So trying to gear up to reapply with the 2023-2024 cycle opening soon. I would really appreciate anyones feedback, I am a very research heavy applicant with very little non-clinical volunteering.
State/Country of Residence: California
Ties to other States/Regions: Aunts/Uncles on East Coast (MA, CT, and MD), Grandparent in Florida, Sister in Kansas
URM? (Y/N): Yes
Year in School: Graduated in 2021
Undergraduate Major(s)/Minor(s): Biology from a state school
Cumulative GPA: 3.59 (w aggressive upward trend, 4.0 last 4 semesters)
Science GPA: 3.57
MCAT Score(s): 513 (129/125/129/130), CARS destroyed me sigh
Research Experience: 5,420hr total-- 2720hr from an internship at a T5 during undergrad, the rest from my current job as a technician in a lab at said T5. 2000hr anticipated. all is stem cell research :D
Publications/Abstracts/Posters (include how you were credited e.g. first author, second author, etc.): 4th author on a paper in a high impact journal (CNS), mid level author on 3 other papers. 3 poster presentations (received an award for one of these as best presentation hehe) and have attended 5 research conferences
Clinical Experience (paid or volunteer): 1326hr-- EMT in a hospital during undergrad, this was A LOT of direct patient care; 150hr (80hr anticipated)-- volunteering at a local blood center
Physician Shadowing: Combined 200+ hrs of shadowing in the following fields: General Surgery, Intensive care/ICU, Pediatric Nephrology, ENT, Thoracic Surgery.
Non-Clinical Volunteering: 25hr volunteering with a local food bank. I know this area is obvi a weakness, but between everything else I never had the time :/
Other Extracurricular Activities: rode horses competitively for ~16 years (lol I included this on my app and it was brought up in one of my interviews!!)
Other Employment History: 540hr as a tutor during undergrad (paid job), this was for a cell & molecular biology class
Immediate family members in medicine? (Y/N): N
Specialty of Interest (if applicable): no clue
Interest in Primary Care (Y/N): N
Interest in Rural Health (Y/N): N
Schools I applied to last yr: Florida Atlantic University, Tulane, California University of Science and Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Hackensack Meridian, Temple, UC Davis, Creighton University, Florida International Univ., Virginia Tech Carillion SOM, Duke, Kaiser, Loyola Chicago Stritch SOM, Thomas Jefferson University, Wayne State, Emory, Albert Einstein, Cooper Medical School of Rowan Univ, Drexel, George Washington, Georgetown, USC, NYU Long Island, Northwestern, Stony Brook, Stanford, Tufts, UCSD, UCLA, Virginia Commonwealth, OHSU
Schools I want to reapply to (will add to this list, can also yell at me if you think one of these is a waste of $): Florida Atlantic Univ, Tulane, Thomas Jefferson, Drexel, Georgetown, George Washington, Stanford, UC Davis, UCSD, Temple
Changes since last app: I have the (very few) non clinical/medical volunteering hours, and I have the publications (last year I had them on my app as 'in preparation for submission'). I also have a lot more research hours (+2700) and shadowing hours (+100) bc thats pretty much all I have been doing .. did not think i was gonna have to reapply so thats why i wasnt doing more to improve my app :/
I do not want to apply to as many as I did last year (bc poor) so I would appreciate any feedback on which I might have a better chance at/which as just a waste of money!! Also want to apply to a few DO schools, but hesitant bc havent shadowed a DO and also not looking forward to double boards. Thanks in advance!! ◡̈
