2023.02.03 03:33 Slayer6_70 Nikon Z 3rd party lenses
Apparently this is their stance on this 3rd party lenses
https://nikonrumors.com/2023/02/02/nikon-will-allow-third-party-lenses-only-if-they-are-complimentary-to-the-nikkor-lens-lineup.aspx/ I can see why they didn't rush to make this clear any sooner than they had to. It is questionable whether Canon will get away with this. I had eliminated them from consideration based on similar policies and had wanted to stick with Nikon. It's a competitive market and any advantage I saw in them is pretty much cancelled out by the knowledge that 3rd party lens availability is likely to be minimal. Why would a company like Zeiss even bother if all Nikon has to do is decide they would rather not have competent competition in a high margin category. I have a d7200 and I was kinda giving up on the z70 anyway.

2022.12.31 00:24 HP2Mav Z6/7ii Prices on the way down?
I see there are quite a few places offering quite good prices on Z6ii and Z7ii. Here in the UK, even saw the Z6ii available for £1,500. Strangely used prices seem to be holding. Is this Nikon readying for a iii version release? Or just seasonal sale prices? Haven’t seen anything on nikonrumors about any imminent releases… Am considering adding a Z body to go alongside my D500…

2022.08.03 18:32 Tijuanagringa Flashes and lenses for Z7ii?
| Long post: It's been more than a year that I've been trying to decide if I should drop the $$$ to get back with Nikon. I can't stand it any longer and decided I'm returning to Nikon. :) I held a Z6ii at Best Buy and I could feel the magic in my hand again. I wanted to see if the Z7ii felt the same in hand but given they seem almost identical, I'm sure it will. And yeah, I saw the NikonRumors about the Z8 but given how little is out there about this rumor, who knows when it will show up? I've decided on the Z7ii (Z9 is too big! and the Z6 has the same resolution as my current Fuji) but just this past week decided it's time to put something in the cart and get back with Nikon. I had a D90 with a Tokina 11-16 and an SB-600. I shot literally 15,000+ shots with that setup. (Actually I still have it but I upgraded to a Fuji XT20 with a 10-24 and a Godox flash a few years ago). Anyway, I want that Nikon magic back. Fuji sucks at rendering reds and it just doesn't feel as good in hand as my beloved Nikon. I shoot environmental portraits on the street and in night clubs and often at night under street lights. I have to work quickly and don't have a lot of time to screw around with settings and misfires. Do y'all think the Z7ii with that 14-30 f4 lens plus a flash will give me the same "look" I had with my previous Nikon setup? Or should I opt for dropping another thousand to get the 2.8 ? I ALWAYS use flash on-camera for my work due to the environment. (Weight of setup is also a factor for me; lighter is definitely better.) Or should I get an FTZ and use my beloved Tokina lens (and can anyone babystep me through the facts of what happens when you use a DX lens on the Z7ii? Is it just that the camera automatically drops the resolution?) I wish that Tokina would make another ultrawide for the Z line but that doesn't seem to be in the pipeline yet. I also can't decide if I should get the SB-700 or the Godox V1 or just stick with my old SB-600? I am concerned about a few reviews that mentioned how the Godox hotshoe mount was poorly made and snapped for several users but many seem to love it. I ruled out the SB-500 because of the potential for long recycle time on the flash but maybe that's not an issue? I don't use flash off-camera and I wear the whole rig around my neck for hours at a time when shooting. I shoot close to my subjects - usually less than five feet away. If you made it through this massive post, any and all suggestions/thoughts/ideas welcomed... 2021.11.02 00:52 rando_commenter Early Black Friday Buying Guide: Don't Wait This Year.
So if it isn't obvious now, everything is in short supply this year because of the chip shortage and global shipping crisis. I just looked at the
CIPA Japan industry report and they have updated with
September numbers. The volume of cameras shipped does not look promising at all, this September is even less than last year and is barely 1/2 what it was before the pandemic started. It's the same across the board for lenses and compact cameras.
If you look at those graphs, shipments to retailers typically peak in October. That's because everybody has locked in their purchase for Black Friday and Christmas. CIPA doesn't have October 2021 numbers yet but it's clear the trend is not good.
Caveats: nobody really knows what's up with Nikon or the supply situation. This is a best guess outline based on available information.
So...
a) If it's on sale and you want it, buy it.
b) The best sales will probably be on DSLR's that are not the D850 and D500. They will want to clear out as much of the consumer DSLR stuff as they can, because if it isn't already, it will be dead stock as more people demand mirrorless.
Europe is likely to see more DSLR stock than everybody else.
c) Prices aren't going to go below historic levels. For example, we probably saw the lowest D750 holiday prices ever before the pandemic because that camera has already been on sale for many, many years.
d) Z fc they will probably give some token discount but not much. This is conjecture on my part, but it's balancing two things. New in-demand cameras aren't typically discounted, but its closet competitors the Sony A6100 and Fuji X-T30 will be discounted this year because those models are older.
e) If you haven't already put in a
pre-order for the Z9, you may not get in on the first shipment. Also, don't buy into the hype of "most pre-orders ever." A lot of people try to be clever and put down pre-orders with multiple stores; they'll just cancel their other deposits and get a refund if one of the stores comes through.
f) Expect to see a lot of "get X-amount of bonus stuff with a purchase of Y-camera" kind of deals. These promotions suck because they aren't actually that much of a discount on the camera and they sell you on the savings of the retail price of the accessories that they give you, but it's not always stuff you need. The best deals are the straight-up price drops. If the price of a camera drops $400, that's coming out of Nikon, not the local retailer.
Edit: caveats about bonus promotions. If there is a cash discount on top of a bonus item, the promotion may or may not suck. But if you are seeing that kind of promotion now before BF and there is little to no cash discount, then it's a weak promotion.
g) The problem with Black Friday is that nobody believes that anything sold beforehand is the best price, even if some of the manufacturers start their promotions early. Check your store's price protection policy. In some cases you can buy it early and if the price goes lower on Black Friday, you can get refunded to the new sale price, assuming they are willing to handle returns and price protections during the Black Friday weekend.

2021.10.23 11:16 nordicFir Alternatives to EH-7P USB wall charger?
Hey folks, I just got my Z6II this week, but due to the chip shortage, Nikon has omitted the EH-7P USB wall mount chargers. (See here:
https://nikonrumors.com/2021/06/30/nikon-to-stop-including-the-eh-7p-charging-ac-adapter-with-z7-z7ii-cameras-due-to-part-shortage.aspx/ )
That said, it is a bummer because I use the Z6II for streaming, and I need enough power to keep it running for a few hours at a time. Plugging into a regular USB-C charger doesn't seem to allow it to run off USB, the battery still trickles down. It will charge if the camera is off, but that's not what I need. That said, do any of your fine folks here happen to know of an alternative that works to keep the Z6II running off USB power for extended periods?
Thanks so much!

2020.07.21 23:57 asamimasa Discussion about the 24-50mm f4-6.3 - how does it change your zoom collection?
Link to the announcement Key points:
- Does collapse like the 24-70 f4 or 16-50 DX
- Weather sealed (?!)
- Minimized focus breathing
I haven't seen an MTF chart yet, though I doubt it'll really impact my purchasing decision having seen the performance of the other zooms in the system.
Background: I've been waiting for this one for a while at the same time as the 24-200. I currently own the 24-70 f4, 24-70 f2.8, and 16-50 on the Z7. The f4 is likely the one to go from this set and the 16-50 plays the casual role, and the f2.8 for more serious shooting. Make no mistake, the 16-50 is bewitchingly sharp. I've historically been against the notion of dropping that much resolution, but the tradeoff has been really worth the convenience; it impressed me much more than when I got the f2.8.
With this 24-50, we have an FX-native replacement for the 16-50, and it underlines the convenience and practicality side of the Z-mount philosophy. I personally don't shoot wide often, so I'm a bit sad to lose the 50-75mm eq range of the DX lens, but I could do the same with the 24-50 in DX mode. F6.3 is slow indeed, but I got on with it better than expected with the 16-50; pack a 50 1.8 in tandem if you must.
I'm pretty surprised this thing is weather-sealed, it continues to show the efforts made towards kit for rigorous use as we saw with t he 24-70 f4 that I've shot with in various levels of rain.
This is a polarizing aspect, but I'm in the camp that likes the collapsing designs if it affords a noticeable difference in packed size. With the 16-50 mounted, the profile of the Z7 is no more than stowing away just the body in a bag and it can go in sideways rather than lens faced down and taking up the width of the camera bag. Heck, it's even jacket pocketable.
One thing that doesn't get covered often is the perceived shape of a lens when it comes to standing out. Something like the 24-70 2.8 with petal hood has an aggressive shape and size that makes it stand out and scream "photographer". This one has an outward tapering end towards the end for the hood bayonet and looks a bit cheaper. Philosophies and elitism for what "real" street photography is, I think this is a good candidate for some discreet shooting, assuming you can handle the f6.3 on the long end.
Historically, nobody in their right mind would buy a kit lens at full price when it can be had for 60-70% bundled with a body and abundant on the secondhand market. I feel that this and the 16-50 are priced reasonably well that if you're already a Z6/7 owner and were interested, you could swallow the full cost of this without feeling so bad. That said, I'm curious how much I could pick up a used of these for in a year from now.
Talking exclusively about Z-native lenses, these are the ownership pairings that make the most sense to me, with whatever primes you like sprinkled in between:
- 24-50 + 24-70 2.8: One for going light, one for performance
- 24-50.+ 24-200: One for easy packing, one for zoom range convenience
- 14-30 + 24-70 (either version): I don't really see the wide zoom paired that well with the 24-50 for the overall focal lengths covered for the number of lenses involved
