2023.06.03 12:48 Money_Performer8563 Epilepsy + COVID
Almost a year ago I had COVID for the second time (both times gotten from an immediate family member). Three weeks after that I had my first epileptic seizure. I had to move back home and drop out of college right before my senior year. I had already been looking at masters programs. All of my friends have adult jobs, and I’m living with my grandparents. I’m just curious about anyone else’s experience and if they’ve noticed any relationship with COVID. I’ve been looking into peer reviewed research articles, and some have theorized that there could be a correlation. Researching has helped me to somewhat process my experience as the past year has been turbulent to say the least. TIA

2023.06.03 12:20 2seokdeeznuts13 Two Kakampinks walked into a café
Two Kakampinks walked into a café.
This was after they lost the elections, and they've recovered na from the hard-hitting reality. Mga one year later na 'to.
They were in 12th grade senior high when they chanted along with the pink crusade, now they're both in their first year of college. The first is taking up a course on secondary education, major in English; the second, business administration. Well, dahil unti-unti na silang nagiging busy sa kanya-kanya nilang buhay, minsan na lang sila magkita. That's why these two friends, when they found the time, arranged this date.
The café was a typical modern café. It was one of those minimalist-styled establishments na may maliit na blackboard sa labas with cute chalk doodles to highlight its business hours. The interiors were adorned with overhanging indoor plants. The wooden tables varnished to golden-brown shine. The walls were an of an aesthetic black, designed with white huge calligraphy of optimistic cliches nabbed online. The entire place had a yellow lighting, setting up the ambience, making the entire place worthy to be posted on Instagram.
Waiting naman the tables, is an apron-clad guy with a deep dimple and a bulging Adam's apple, who was handsome enough to be romanticized.
But the two Kakampinks didn't care for him, as they are in love to each of their boyfriend. That's characteristic of women. When they're in love with a guy, the other guys get ignored, no matter how handsome they are.
Anyway, there they were. Sitting side-by-side. In an intimate table for two, catching up with each other's lives, that is, chatting about that funny professor they've had, that campus event in their respective university, that latest episode of that Netflix show they watch, that one fond memory they keep recalling. There was noise, there was glee, there was laughter, there was whispering, and of course, as this was in a café nga, there was eating. Particularly the eating of a creamy carbonara; and of a mushroom soup; and of a red velvet cake; and of a frappe; and of other dishes and beverages and desserts that one has to take a picture of before eating it.
Well, the hours passed and the skies got darker. Without alcohol, they began to get drunk—drunk from the intimacy that only friendship can give. From the honesty that this drunkenness has granted them, things then began to get political, as one said to the other:
"I don't know if you feel it too pero I cringe about being a Kakampink."
This remark came from a train of thought that began with their discussion of the leftist initiatives they've heard in each of their campuses. To this, a reply:
"Oh my god, ikaw din?" with gleaming eyes, the other said. "I feel that too. Takot lang akong i-verbalize sa circle ko as that may be an unpopular opinion today. Ang binary na kasi ng lahat. Any anti-pink rhetoric can suddenly turn you into a pro-red apologist."
"Then, this is a good thing na we share the same sentiments. And I'm glad na it's with you, whom I can finally speak of this." she said, "you know, I keep seeing sa fb feed ko yung fb memories of the pink rallies. My friends keep resharing them ta's sasabihing the best era daw. Well, whenever I see shares like that, I feel this funny feeling of cringe. Primarily from my intellect."
"Same. Probably kasi, we used to belong in there?" she replied, "we used to be one of them, in that pink crusade."
"Probably."
"Pero, I guess, that's okay. A wise man once told me na cringing at your past self is one of the surest sign that you've progressed to maturity."
"I like that. Education through disillusionment." she said with an honest smile. And then, she asked: "well, what led you to your disillusionment?"
"I am not so sure." she said, "wala namang maling ginawa si Leni for me to stop supporting her—pero, i guess the disillusionment came from the closest Kakampink I know, namely my self."
"Yeah, what about your self?"
"I had this episode lang of being moved by the poverty of our people, while I was dining in an eat-all-you-can buffet," she said almost laughing at her self with cynicism, "The restaurant had glass walls, so kita mo yung labas, from the inside. Well, while I was eating nga, may madungis na batang pulubi na dumaan, holding his hand out to me, mouthing something at me. I know na nanghihingi siya ng limos. Pero, I just consciously ignored him, shoving a spoonful of rice na sinabawan ng kare-kare, straight in my mouth. After that epispde, I kept contemplating on the glass walls. Is that not what we're doing? Just the rich and the privileged looking through the glass wall that separates us from the hungry, while we eat and dine and have our fill?"
"You think we're one of the rich and the privileged?"
"Are we not? We think na mga pasistang pulitiko lang yung rich and privileged, yung may subdivision 'gaya ng mga Villar o yung may private jet 'gaya ng mga Marcos," she said, "pero, think about it: don't we belong there, too? As we enjoy all our iPhones Pro's? Our Aquaflask tumblers? Our eat-all-you-can buffets? Our boba teas?"
"Yes, I think we are," the other replied, "If that's how you would put it, we basically are."
"Well, yun," she explained, "I guess, that's the part that doesn't make sense to me. How can I claim to fight for the poor, join them in their plights, while at the same time, enjoy my self in such lavish comfort? I think that would be hypocrisy."
"I'm really glad we're having this conversation," she replied fondly. "cause what you said—it's so aligned with an idea that I've been thinking about since the pink era was over." she sipped from her milk tea, and then continued, "we both joined the rally 'di ba? And we both saw the people there. And we both saw na most of them had an iPhone. I was just thinking, in retrospect, na maybe, we're part of the oppression too?"
"What do you mean?"
"Where does the iPhone user get his prestige?"
"Well, as a user of one, I don't find my iPhone prestigious kasi I'm not that petty." she said, with a laughing pompousity. "pero i could honestly answer that, in behalf of those petty materialists. The prestige of the iPhone comes from the fact na mahal yun and not everyone could afford one."
"Exactly. And yung mga 'di maka-afford ng iPhone, will have to settle with an Android phone." the other remarked, "so the prestige of the iPhone users, is based on the poverty of the Android users. Now, you can apply that to any material object advertised as a social emblem of luxury. Gucci, Jordan shoes, Starbucks, even the Aquaflask tumbler. The prestige of having one, enjoying one, consuming one, is based on its expensiveness, on how Capitalism privileged it on a pedestal, and on the idea na not everyone could afford it."
"So the glory of the havings is based on the lacking of the having-not's"
"Wow, you've put that aptly in a nutshell." the other remarked excitedly, "and yes! That's about right. The reason why our ideas of luxury, prestige, and privilege exist is because of their lacking, their not having, and their poverty. We are rich because they are poor. That's why I posited na we may be part of their oppression, too."
"That indeed makes sense." the other replied, "that's probably why ide-Day ko ang Starbucks ko, kasi alam kong may maiinggit."
"Right." the other said, with a laughter, "You're getting the idea. Pero you're adding your own mean twist. But that's my point: we exist in a social pyramid of lower class, middle class, upper class, where each class is really stepping on the back of the one immediately lower to them to maintain the height they enjoy. Yung lower class yung pinaka-kawawa as two classes are above them. And in this case we're discussing, their oppression is through our idea of luxurious materialism and the prestige we attach to commodified objects."
"Kaya it won't make sense for us to say 'eat the rich' kasi that would mean we have to eat ourselves."
"Exactly." she said, "the pro-red apologist proud of his iPhone, is the same with the pro-pink proud of her iPhone. They're both from the same greed and gluttony, blinded by the same object fetishism espoused by Capitalism. That's why the Kakampink revolution is not really the revolution. It's a revolt against the dominant group of iPhone users, by just another group of iPhone users. A bourgeoisie revolution. And that does not change things, for as long as the same object fetishism exists, as long as the same ideals for luxury exists, as long as Capitalism's definition of what a self is exists—the true proletarian revolution will not happen. We simply replaced the rich with a new set of rich."
"Well, what should be done, then?"
"This may be corny, pero I'll say it anyway," she said, shyly, "what must be done is to follow what Christ said to the rich man: sell your possessions and give them to the poor."
"Yes," she remarked, in-between a laughter, "that is indeed corny."
"Yes," she agreed, and then explained: "pero i think it's the closest thing we have to achieve a truly equal, egalitarian paradise as this Christian advice encourages the complete abolition of self and private property by a complete and genuine charity to the entire community."
With a concerned look, the other then remarked, "And by that you mean, surrendering our iPhones, our Aquaflask tumblers, our eat-all-you-can buffets, our boba teas, our ideals of luxury, of vanity, of prestige— our spectacular self-images, right?"
"Yes."
"Well, that's too ideal." she said, scoffingly, "can you do that?"
"No, I can't," she admitted, with a secret despair, "maski ako, I can't give up those. I can't live without my iPhone, you know? Pero I guess, the important thing here is we have to be honest about that. Self-awareness is as important as social awareness. We have to see na not only are we inside Capitalism, but that Capitalism is also inside us. We are molded by the same greed, the same gluttony that shaped the fat, privileged capitalist we condemn." Then she adds: "kaya siguro i cringe at my past. i envisioned my naive activist-self as a holy hero in the pink crusade—that I was someone noble, fighting a just war. Pero, I can now see much clearer. I'm really just a noisy child with a silver spoon in her mouth, who knows nothing about poverty, and who happens to have read a thread on Twitter. A poser who could courageously scream 'eat the rich' but could not muster enough courage to 'feed the poor.' "
Emphatizing with the melancholia she just voiced out, the other replied, "That reminds me of a lyrics from a song: everybody wants to change the world, but nobody wants to die."
"Yeah, that's about it. That's so true," she said, realizing something. And then, she laughs it off, "grabe. we're on a different level of wokeness here."
"Kaya nga eh. Nagutom tuloy ako." the other assented, a change of mood then took place, "I'm craving for some Samgyup. May alam ka ba na nasa malapit lang?"
"Ay, meron. Walking distance lang from here," the other answered, "madalas kaming mag-date ng boyfriend ko do'n—tara, kain tayo."
They began to pack their things up, grabbing their shoulder bags, clutching their purses. As they walk out of the café, the bell chimes over the doorway signalled their departure. At this, the waiter then makes his move; he cleans up the mess they leave behind.
The two Kakampinks walking out of the café, will now head to that Samgyup resto, to eat and have their fill.

2023.06.03 11:43 finscealbeo Career break experiences
Hi folks,
Bit of background, 4 years exp with same company out of college, done some remote work abroad during last 2 years without advertising it, loved it. Back in Ireland enjoying summer. Thinking to take a period of time out and just focus of the best certifications in my area of expertise, very backend focused living on SSMS, Snowflake daily with front end development mixed in but not my strength. My team is so under resourced it's a joke and communications are that cost cutting is to continue of course, technical skills stagnating with all the extra work and meetings I'm involved in, senior people keep leaving, more work and responsibility for me, learning lots of course, but stressed to the max now. Working in med tech so dealing with a lot of non tech people and it is completely breaking me now!
Obviously can advise to get another job, I do have an interview next week for data engineer role (80% remote), but Ireland right now not super appealing so not even sure I want it. So any good stories out there of career breaks and using the time beneficially? Have a 2 year budget to hang out in a place like Chiang Mai, Thailand and try and take in the good energy out there from digital nomad types (obviously if not productive not working, I'm not staying for 2 years). I have no commitments, single, etc, why am I still here is what my brain is screaming at me, take a chance, etc.
Any stories welcomed on career break experiences :)

2023.06.03 10:57 Frosty_Psychology943 "Di kami marunong non."
I'm in my 30s, still living with my parents, ako nalang ang kasama nila.

2023.06.03 10:08 Lulumaegolightly Seeing my dad/stepmom at family events once a year is stressful and I wish it didn’t bother me. - Really this is just a vent to get feelings out but would really appreciate input.
I [36F] really don’t know how things got as bad as they are but I basically never speak to my dad [63] or my stepmom/their kids and I don’t want to. Background: I never lived with my dad, only ever lived with my mom and paternal grandma/grandpa. Our relationship was always strained in my opinion. He was stern and quiet and I couldn’t tell when he was mad. He wasn’t affectionate really. He never said much unless he was voicing his opinion or criticizing something. Kind of like walking on eggshells for me once I wasn’t a fun little kid anymore. I was welcoming of stepmom dating my dad when I was a teen, but by the time I was an adult I just wanted to try having a meaningful relationship with him first, before her. I tried letting him know but it never went anywhere. He never met me in the middle. I think I should make it known that I don’t want to see them at family events anymore, for my own mental health. But it just isn’t that easy.
I’ve spent lots of time feeling guilty for where our relationship stands but keep reminding myself of why I feel the way I do; that I was a somewhat neglected child/teen and that they were the adults during important developmental years of my life and did an exceptionally poor job helping me navigate life. I guess I was a highly sensitive child and still can be a sensitive adult, and I’ve learned to mask it all too well. I don’t have much memory of my childhood and I think I had so much anxiety that I was not fully present in my body. Once I was an adult I became more aware of my feelings and how much I was stuffing them down probably because I was always told to quit crying and being a baby. Even as an adult he told me to suck it up when I was crying from a serious break up. I guess my feelings and emotional well-being were and have been ignored. I also think my father would deny my reality a lot when I was little. I remember hearing “that didn’t happen” or “I didn’t say that” often. It’s hard for me to tell if he was gaslighting me and possibly a narcissist. My dad was basically a big bully.. he’d give kids in our family nicknames and they weren’t always nice. He called my chubby little cousin doughnut boy. He’d laugh at kids all the time, out loud, right in front of their face. He didn’t believe 3rd grade me when I said I had broken my arm while he was literally there and saw me fall. Two days later I was finally in a cast.
As a 20 something I found out from my stepmom that I was still on my dad’s health insurance, right at the time I would no longer be eligible to be on it- after thinking I had no way to get basic medical treatment for years. Never got my SAT Scores or senior photos done because they kept saying they’d help me do it and never did. She was photographer, jfc. She’s so vain and her body issues were projected on me. When my grandpa died my step mom called to break the news… I was not close with her then or ever really. Why should she be the one to call and break the news the first time I experienced the death of a loved one? If I ever tried calling for my dad, I couldnt even talk to him without going through her first. When I was about 20 she called me a spoiled brat after not getting her way with me and my dad was there to take her side. She’s always sticking her nose in every one else’s business and caused an even further rift between me and my dad when she stirred up drama between my mom and my dad that would have been non existent if not for her planting a lie. It was kind of traumatic for me and happened on Christmas of all days.
Either way, I hate seeing them at family events and never know when they are going to be there so I have a lot of anxiety about family gatherings that should be a good time. Any time they aren’t there I enjoy seeing and spending time with everyone. I think I need to voice how I feel for my own peace of mind but I just know they won’t understand my point of view, they never have. And there is just too much to be said..
For years our relationship was just awkward talk-about-the-weather type of surface level convo on holidays and last year when he gave me a shoulder to the chest during a goodbye hug, I said to hell with it. Why am I even trying to be cordial at this point? Now I have other family members butting in. I almost want to send a group text message saying that I’d prefer to be notified when they are coming but that is just too much to ask in my opinion. Family can’t really control when family decides to show up to a gathering everyone knows about.
I need to find a way to move on with my life and stop living in my trauma. If you read for this long, thank you 💕

2023.06.03 09:53 Anengineeringnerd Any advice for a new "generalist" engineer looking to enter consulting/management roles
Hi all, I would like to ask if anyone has advice for someone new in civil engineering (half a year in my first job), but would like to transition into management/MC roles. Reason is, I think I'm more of a generalist (with interests in economics/business) instead of having interest in working in-depth towards becoming a professional engineer. I've been doing lots of research on how to prep myself for MC roles but sometimes it feels daunting because for someone with background irrelevant to the job role, I might be at a disadvantage, more so when I'm living in a region where the talent pool is already saturated, Singapore.
I'm currently working on an engineering consultancy role in an MNC and I've been eyeing on getting an MBA to try to pivot. But I'm well aware that good business schools wouldn't admit people with less experience, and that young candidates like me may not be able to reap much benefits out of the network of people with richer work experiences (I wouldn't be taken too seriously as a peer I think?). Because of this, I've been thinking if I should get an MSc instead, something like technology management to venture into somewhere between engineering and management consulting. Is this something feasible, or are there any roles out there that may be worth trying for someone from an engineering background but would like to pivot rather early? Would appreciate it if any seniors could provide insights/advice on what pathways I can try out.
Thanks! :)

2023.06.03 09:46 Final_Ad_9751 Concerns about the Cost and Structure of the Nepali Army: Impact on the Economy and Society
I wanted to talk about something that has been on my mind regarding the Nepali army: its size and purpose. It's something that often leaves me wondering about the allocation of resources and the effectiveness of our military strategy.
Consider this: Nepal has a population of around 30 million ( 3 Crore) people, and we have an army of approximately 100,000 personnel. While it's important to have a capable defense force to safeguard our nation, we need to question the practicality of such a large army.
Let's face it: we cannot realistically go to war with our neighboring countries like India or China. The scale and power disparity make it impractical and potentially catastrophic for us. So, what is the use of maintaining an army of this size?
Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for a well-trained and disciplined army to maintain internal security, and provide disaster relief. However, the sheer number of personnel and the associated costs raise concerns about resource allocation and the impact on our economy.
You know, one thing that bothers me is the retirement benefits for army personnel. They can join the army at a young age, like 16, and retire by the time they're 32. And guess what? They get a pension until they die, and even after that, their spouses keep receiving it. It's great for them, of course, but it puts a lot of financial pressure on the government.
Moreover, it's not just the army that raises eyebrows. We also have the Armed Police Force (APF) with around 60,000 personnel. Again, the question arises: why do we need such a large organization in a country that is deep in poverty?
What's even more concerning is the reports and rumors that many army personnel end up working as personal servants in the houses of senior officers. This misuse of our army's capabilities and manpower is disheartening. Instead of serving the nation, they are serving the personal needs of a few individuals. This raises questions about fairness, transparency, and the proper utilization of our valuable resources. As a citizen, it's disheartening to see our country struggling to provide basic services and improve the living conditions of our people, while a significant portion of our resources is directed towards maintaining these forces. The money spent on the army and APF could be channeled into initiatives that directly benefit our citizens, such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation programs.
I believe it's high time for our government to critically evaluate the necessity and cost-effectiveness of our defense forces. We should focus on creating a leaner, more efficient structure that aligns with our country's needs and economic realities. By doing so, we can redirect resources towards uplifting the lives of our people and driving sustainable development. I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter. What do you think about the size and purpose of our army and the Armed Police Force?
Let's save Nepal from this Army Burden !!!

2023.06.03 09:28 savagemike213 The Complexities of Accountability: Blame and Responsibility in Technological Warfare
| What punishment is given when you don't follow the orders of your seniors or act against them in corporate settings? You may be scolded by your seniors or face other consequences. However, in the military, the consequences for such actions are much more severe. The military operates on a strict chain of command, and deviating from it can have serious outcomes. Now, let's consider a scenario where technology, rather than humans, is involved in breaking the chain of command. The military is rapidly adopting technology in various aspects, including weapons and logistics. Drones, in particular, have revolutionized warfare, both in terms of reconnaissance and offensive capabilities. Drones enable remote surveillance of enemy territories without risking human lives. They can also be used to attack infrastructure and other high-value targets with stealth and precision, as seen in conflicts like the one between Armenia and Azerbaijan. With drones, human casualties are reduced in many scenarios compared to traditional warfare. The more advanced and lethal the drones and their controls become, the more precise and effective the attacks can be. However, there have been instances where drones have acted against the intentions of their operators. Let's focus on a specific incident involving a military personnel attempting to evade a target being hit by the drone. In this case, the drone did not accept the command and instead attempted to attack the operator. The dilemma arises when determining who should be blamed for such incidents. It is not appropriate to hold anyone accountable since it is a technical error. Punishing the machine would result in significant financial and asset loss. Therefore, the only approach is to be vigilant when operating such technological weapons because humans are ultimately responsible for their operation. submitted by savagemike213 to dailyobservatons [link] [comments] |

2023.06.03 07:13 Master_Bates_69 Laid off couple weeks ago from B4, having trouble landing a job in industry
I have 3 years of PA experience (audit and advisory at 2 diff firms), no CPA and am having trouble finding a job. My base pay in big 4 advisory as a senior was 100k (MCOL).
Is it realistic for me to find an industry job that pays around this much or should I bite the bullet and lower my salary expectations?
I know some friends in tech who were laid off 3-4+ months ago and they absolutely cannot find another job that matches their former salaries and it scares the living sh*t out of me, although to be fair they were probably more overpaid than me.

2023.06.03 05:29 Cc17359 2nd go on Lexapro
A bit of backstory. I had my first major depressive episode my senior year of college. Depersonalization, derealization, suicidal thoughts, whole 9 yards. I eventually got put on Lexapro and this snapped me out of that after about 12 weeks. I was doing AMAZING feeling like a normal human for about a year and a half, then suddenly, boom: symptoms appeared and had horrible suicidal thoughts. Tried out a few different medications but nothing worked and I mean nothing. Fast forward to January of 2023. I went against my psychiatrist (I know I’m sorry but I was desperate) and asked my GP if we could try Lexapro again because it worked amazing the first time, maybe my body just needed a break? Anyway, yes it worked great! I felt normal again up until this week. I feel my depressive symptoms full swing and I am scared and tired of this stupid fight with my brain. So my question is, do I wait it out? Do I ask my doctor for a different SSRI? Am I totally doomed to live this cycle? Please help, I really am tired of fighting my brain and I was so happy to have at least a few months of peace on Lexapro.

2023.06.03 05:21 Amos54 FAQ for this sub - a work in progress
Hello everyone and welcome to this sub! We expect most of the people who show up here are men, but also understand some women will find their way here too. This FAQ, and the sub as a whole, are mainly for men to help them understand what this latest method of dating, filtering, gossip or whatever you want to call it is all about. It also includes ways to help understand the reasoning behind it, and what you can do going forward to help protect yourself and others. This document will be a work in progress and I'll edit as needed for more critical information.
Q: What is AWDTSG / Are We Dating the Same Guy? A: AWDTSG started over a year ago, around early-mid 2022. It originated on Facebook groups and still resides there today. The original purpose of the group was a way for women to exchange information with one another about the men they were dating primarily focused on their safety. For example if the man turned out to have an extensive criminal record, was physically abusive, or in a relationship/married. There was no one centralized group that I'm aware of, although I'm sure it probably started that way. It currently exists in multiple groups in major cities primarily in the United States but also some cities in Europe. At its peak, these groups had around 2 million members.
Q: Isn't focusing on dating safety a good thing? A: Of course! However what a lot of people fail to understand is that you do not need Facebook groups like these to be safe. Anyone can search public records on a person to find if they have a criminal background or some type of outstanding court records involving family law. No, courts don't keep track of who's in a relationship and who isn't, however you can still search for marriage records. There is no perfect system, and there are no guarantees despite what many people who claim that these sorts of groups are now essential in today's modern dating world.
Q: So what's wrong with these groups? A: Over 95% of all AWDTSG group discussions are nothing more than gossip. Yes, like I mentioned previously they started out focusing on safety for their members and helping others investigate suspicious people by searching public records. However that quickly fell to the wayside and degenerated into rumors, gossip, comments about the appearance of men, insults pertaining to their body or how they live their personal life. Originally these groups posted men with whom the women were in established relationships, and some married women who suspected their husbands may be cheating. Instead today women will take pictures of men either from public profiles on social media sites, or screenshots of their dating profiles on various apps, and ask for "tea" (gossip) on a man whom they have never even spoken to. This is a very common occurence in all regional groups however the members of these groups justify it under the guise of "thinking about" matching with the man in question or sliding into their DMs.
Q: This sounds terrible! A: It is. There have been many reports of men who have seen the posts and comments made by women who dogpile, there are women who claim a man have said or done something to her and the man has never met the woman before. There are no methods of verifying the comments that women make in these groups as being valid or truthful. Many are inclined to believe them unfortunately because the admins of these groups continue to parrot on a regular basis that it's all about "safety".
Q: How do you actually know what's said in these groups? A: I, along with other people in this sub, have access to different groups throughout the U.S. and some other countries. Some of us are also mods in these groups.
Q: Why won't Facebook remove these groups then if they're so harmful? A: That is an interesting question and one that's been tossed around several times before. Here's the best consensus I've been able to determine so far. Paola Sanchez is the woman behind running these groups and is the public face of them. Her boyfriend, Blake Milbrand, however is the main guy actually implementing the logistics of running these groups and also trying to use as a springboard to start their own company. We believe that the Facebook groups that got started were a way of sort of testing the market to determine if there would be any demand for such a service. Sure enough, research found that women still enjoy gossiping just like every previous generation of women going back for centuries. I also believe that Paola possibly has some insider business connections at Facebook/Meta. Very likely Facebook continues to allow these sorts of groups to exist or be created since they drive more traffic to Facebook itself. The more traffic Facebook receives the more potential revenue they can generate.
Q: So if Facebook won't remove these groups, we can just report them right? A: Anyone can report any group on Facebook however we know for a fact that hundreds of reports have been made against these groups and Facebook will not remove them. A different approach is required....
Q: What's this different approach? A: If enough legal complaints are made against a group, specifically copyrighted material, this will get Facebook's attention and they do take action. The easiest way a man can remove his pictures from these groups is by filing a DMCA takedown request. Your pictures are considered copyrighted material under U.S. law. When you post your pictures to a dating app, you are giving consent to that app to use your pictures when presenting your profile. However when a woman takes a screenshot of those same pics on your dating profile, you have not given consent for your pictures to be posted and displayed in that manner. Your pictures are still your property.
Q: So how do I file a DMCA takedown request? A: This is where it gets a little tricky and is also precisely why Paola & Blake started the Facebook groups in the manner they did. These groups are private and you must apply to be a member of the group. They will only let women in, and they typically check various factors of the person's account, like account age, profile pics, friends, posting history, etc. In order to file a DMCA takedown request, you need to have the specific URL of your picture. If you have access to a group, you can right-click and select "Show image in new tab" or on a phone usually long press, and open in a new tab if viewing from a browser. The point is you need to get the very long URL with lots of random characters and typically has a "jpg" as part of the URL itself. This is so Facebook knows precisely which picture you're talking about. No one at Facebook or any other media company is going to search for you regardless of whatever DMCA takedown request you file - you must supply the exact URL for them. Anyone can file a copyright claim on their own, for free, using Facebook's own submission page located here:
https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/copyrightform Remember you are considered the owner of your own pictures when submitting this.
You can also have someone else act on your behalf. Some have reported success in hiring people from fiverr. Be sure to always keep records of every take down notice you submit. There are important reasons why which I will discuss later.
Q: If I file a DMCA takedown request, and they remove it, can't someone else just post my pics again? A: Yes that is possible. In which case you will have to file takedown requests for each and every pic that is posted without your consent. It can get tiresome but DMCA takedown notices are an effective tool that has been in use for nearly 25 years in the U.S. These carry legal weight and additionally Facebook has put AWDTSG groups on notice if they receive too many legitimate complaints.
Q: What does that mean that Facebook puts these groups on notice? A: No company wants legal trouble. Large companies like Facebook have full time in-house corporate counsel on their payrolls. These large companies pay their senior attorneys very well and so they want them to focus on very important things for the company such as buyouts of other companies, patent filings or infringements, securities and investments, etc. If legitimate DMCA take down notices are filed against the company in ever increasing numbers, this will begin to get the attention of those attorneys and that's overall bad news for the company because it's exposing them to great legal liability. Facebook has a sort of warning system in place for groups that it hosts. If Facebook receives legitimate takedown notices that it takes action on and complies with the law, after several of these Facebook will notify the group admins of the warning and usually removes certain features for the groups. One of the main features that AWDTSG relies on is anonymous posting. Anonymous posting is exactly what it sounds like - a user can submit a post as "Anonymous" so that no one ever knows their real name. Facebook typically removes this feature for the group. Paola and company have instead resorted to asking for volunteers within the group to post on behalf of other women. What many of these women don't realize is that they have potentially opened themselves personally up to tort of defamation, specifically libel. If Facebook continues to receive and act to comply with legitimate DMCA takedown notices, they will shut down the group.
Q: They've shut down the groups? That's awesome! But can they remake them again? A: Yes, and that's already happened in several areas. Remember how I mentioned previously that your pics could possibly get posted multiple times, and you'd have to file multiple takedown notices for each one? Well you kept those records right? And you kept records of Facebook's reply stating that they've complied with your request right? Don't you think that after maybe 5 or 10 of these happening for your pics it starts getting pretty ridiculous? I mean, you might be able to make the argument that the company itself is actively supporting the hosting of infringing on copyrighted material, and that might even lead to a cause for filing for damages....in other words, suing the company for a monetary sum because they have demonstrated that they repeatedly hosted material that infringed on your rights as a copyright holder. And if you have a legitimate case against a large company like Facebook, you very likely have a pretty good case against the specific person who posted your pics without your consent. Hmmmm :) You know...I wonder if enough guys who kept those records like I mentioned, all got together and met with the same law firm, with the same complaints of repeated hosting of copyrighted material.....what's that called? Why, it's called a class-action lawsuit!
Q: What else do I need to know about these sorts of groups? A: Aside from learning about what people might be saying behind your back, I personally have found them a very useful centralized source of information. What I mean by that is, if I happen to be going on a date with a new lady I've met, I now look her up on these groups. If she's been contributing in any way, there is no point in wasting my time with her. No date is going to happen and I move on with my life. You can easily search for ladies within these groups by clicking on the Members tab. You can also learn who in your area is very active in these groups by scrolling down to the Group Contributors section.
More info about Paola Sanchez and Blake Milbrand In my personal opinion, Paola is a grifter. Of course anyone who starts their own company wants to make money, nothing unusual about that. However the nature of how AWDTSG got off the ground has come to rely on the gossip and unknowing defamation of men. I have personally seen posts made of men in these groups by an anonymous woman (when the anonymous feature was available for the group), a woman replied in the comments that this was her brother and knew about the situation the anonymous woman spoke of, claimed she was entirely wrong and outright lying, and other women in the group verbally began attacking the woman in the comments for defending her brother. The admins of the group sent out a notice the next week reminding the women of the rules of the group - no talking about the group to any men regardless of how you know them. In other words, Paola and company want these women to choose them over their own family.
Have you ever thought objectively for a moment how this sounds? Leaders of these groups don't want any members to talk about the group with anyone who isn't a member and don't want you showing any content of the group to non-members, most especially men. They want you accept that whatever comments are posted about men to be the absolute truth. Do you personally know the thousands of members of these groups? Do you personally know the people who might comment on a man that you do know? If you don't, why would you believe what they say?
Paola has started her company, her published intention being to move all the people off of Facebook and onto a new website or new app.
https://www.awdtsg.com/ has already been created. Some of you may have found her Gofundme here:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/create-a-safe-platform-for-awdtsg One law firm Paola is using:
https://www.longpaulolee.com/ Based on what I and several others have observed about her actions thus far, we don't believe she has sufficient talent or capital to make possible on her own what Facebook is already providing for her. I believe she is simply relying on the naiveté of other women to make a cash grab and nothing more.
A SERIOUS WARNING FOR ANY WOMAN READING THIS!! If you are a member of any AWDTSG group that has lost the ability to post anonymously, likely the mods or admins have asked for volunteers who post on behalf of other women. They ask you to do this under the guise of helping that woman remain anonymous. What you do not realize is that by doing this, you open yourself up to legal liability by posting copyrighted material. Facebook will not protect you - I am referring to the fact that you will personally be held liable if an individual chooses to take it as far as pursuing civil damages for posting copyrighted material without their express written consent.

2023.06.03 05:16 Junior_Cress2828 My experience at NEHS pride today! /positive
So I saw the flyer on instagram ages ago (before it got taken down bc people are ~snowflakes~ lmao) and I went after work today. I was on the bus and walked from River Road towards the event when someone saw my rainbow butterfly wing cape and was like "Man we could use a cape like that down by those protesters haha". So the spiteful little goblin I am, I kept walking straight, and didnt turn into the parking lot towards where Pride was being held. Because I literally cannot help myself. Someone told me they could use me down by the protesters, what was I gonna do, walk away like a rational person? Absolutely not. I'm a Eugenian, I don't do rational.
Low and behold about an hour and a half later I'm still there dancing in front of protesters with my umbrella. I know these protesters. They know me. I think one of them actually said "nice to see you again!" jokingly when I came up. It's always the same bunch, I've seen them at the Saturday Market and at the UO, obviously you're gonna get recognized if you see them a bunch. My motto with them has always been "do no harm but take no shit". I'll never initiate or start anything with them, but if they start something with me I'm ready to finish it. I had my umbrella up and one of them snapped at me about "blocking his freedom of speech, with is illegal!!! >:((((" because my umbrella "accidentally" got in between him and a teenager he was trying to get to talk to him. I know better than the kids do. Don't engage. They're trained to talk to you in a very specific way to make you angry, and so that you flounder your responses so they can humiliate you. They are taught to do these things. Just don't engage. And I pointed to the cops about 50 feet away from us and said "If it's illegal, go talk to them. The cops are here for a reason." And he didn't talk to me again. I'm autistic and my ability to mask my emotions from years of trauma pays off when dealing with protesters. My adrenaline levels can be enough to stop a horse's heart and I'll still be smiling and vibing calmly. The midwest small-town brat in me was ready to get into a fistfight with men twice my size but the rational adult in me was thankfully holding the leash. If you've ever dealt with someone that's persistent in all the things that make you mad (like screaming to teenagers that their parents are pedophiles that are grooming them for bringing them to an event that's giving out colorful flags and button pins) you'll know the feeling.
But in spite of all of that hate. Mostly from the one dude with the speaker the rest of them were kinda just standing around looking bored as hell this was not a lively bunch today- I wanna extend my gratitude to all the students, staff, and community members that pulled up by the curb to talk to me today. They always asked me how I was doing. "Do you need water? Do you have snacks? Are you doing alright here honey?" I would hold up my water bottle and assure them I was staying hydrated. Someone gave me an orange (which was delicious btw) and when my water bottle ran empty, I was told by someone who came out to greet me that they'd hold my place until I got back if I wanted to go find somewhere to refill it. I stayed out there for an hour and a half, from 3 to 4:30. I was only intending on being there for a few minutes, but it was honestly so much fun greeting people and welcoming them in (even with someone screaming the word of someone who only sounded vaugely similar to Jesus in my ear the entire time). A former teacher of mine ran through the parking lot when she saw me to hug me. Practically tackled me and squeezed the life out of me. I had teachers come from inside the event to come and ask me how I was doing. One of them said "Thank you for being the barrier." to me and one of the students who was out there with me with their flag, and it made me really happy. I was one of the first people out there. I know interaction fuels their obsessive ideology but they were harassing people that were coming in and out of the event on foot, calling them out specifically, and telling children that came by that their parents were pedophiles for taking them to a pride event. Someone needed to be a tension breaker and that was my goofy ass for a minute before reinforcements came. People were dancing with their pride flags and singing lady gaga and waving to people as they came in.
And then I headed inside. After an hour and a half I realized "Oh shit I'm gonna miss the whole thing if I'm out here much longer" and I waved goodbye to the protesters. I ate my amazing donated orange outside the gate. Headed on in. It was wonderful. I helped set up during the first NEHS pride last year when I was a senior. So I know just how much it's grown in just ONE YEAR. I watched friends who were still students get access to gender-affirming items (donated binders were a big one. I got my first binder at NEHS pride last year, so to see they still had that available this year? Along with gender-affirming mtf items like bras available for those who may have been mtf? Which was NOT there last year? It was wonderful to see.) I had multiple people stop me and ask if they could pet/take pictures of my pride axolotl (from build a bear, it's pink and has rainbow gills), I had people compliment my outfit, I had people compliment my wings, it was wonderful. There were games and outdoor stuff set up for the kids (which was a bit lacking last year) and there were some small artists there as well. I got a little acrylic pin that has a picture of a peach on it that says "I'm a little fruity!" for 5 bucks and its honestly my favorite thing from today. From the same place I got an "emotional support waterbottle sticker" for 2 bucks that's getting put on my favorite water bottle.
I had a long chat with someone while in line for the spin-the-wheel game. They were clearly nervous, I think they were there by themselves, so I hung out and talked to them while we were in line. I made button pins at two different booths. I collected an ungodly amount of stickers like the little sticker gremlin I am.
And I had. An awesome time. I'm home now. I have a massive headache (probably from being in the sun so long today). But otherwise I'm pretty happy :) I used to be afraid of wearing my pride stuff out in public. People on the bus have given me shifty looks like they want to talk to me in a negative way (but my headphones usually save me from any real confrontation because it's awkward to make someone take off their headphones to tell them you hate their pride flag skirt.) But I walked to the bus stop today, sore and tired, and I felt free.
For as much vocal negativity as there is in this world right now. There's a lot of silent hope, love, and community. I didn't know most of the people who stopped to talk to me today. But they saw me out there and they stopped to make sure I had water. To make sure I had food if I was hungry. To make sure I felt safe during the few times I was up there by myself. Which tbh was not often at all. They didn't know me. And I didn't know them. But we were a part of the same community. And they were there for me. I only hope they believe I was there for them, too. People are kinder than the world has taught us to believe. Don't let the vocal minority prevent you from believing in the good that there is in this world. Stay safe out there, folks! I look forward to seeing yall at Eugene Pride in August! And probably the same protesters too lmao.
