2023.06.06 04:45 bright-Holiday-4878 I hate that i'm a derivative author, a plagiarist and that none of my ideas is original
For years i said that my best trait was creativity, however, it's all i lie i tell myself to not fell bad.
I'm a thief, that's what i do.
I never had a single.idea that i can say it's original. Everything i have is derivative, plagiarized or stolen.
I hate that my main story is a harry Potter rip off, a fanfiction with original names so i don't have to stick to canon or resamble the original character. Some people will say "that there's nothing new under the Sun" or "that every Idea was already written ", but there's no excuse for me. Dark lord, magical School, houses (I'm not even British, i literary took these from harry Potter), there's nothing on this story beyond that, just some ideas that o can't write. A magical grimoire? Boring? A story where this character is stuck on a time loop on her magical school and is killed by the dark lord every day? There's already a game like that! (Okay. I didn't even know about grim grimoire, but still, it's a very common Idea, a time loop)
It was worse before, with blood purity, wizards vs non wizards, werewolfs rebelion. I disregarded most of this, but the story become shallow, It only remains the school and houses, a dark lord i can't fit on my story, and scenes, but without a plot because i can't create one.
I hate that my super heroes are unoriginal, i literary took my main one, crimson Bomber, from a design by Chris malgrain. most of names from my heroes (sound Striker,Steel sentinel, electro and gravity) were created by Claude instant, Althara, my alien Princess, has the predator mandibles (i won't lie, i really like those mandibles and the way they open), and was taken from a cartoon of the March 1941 issue of the pulp magazine fantastic adventures.
My first experience with super heroes o created a cinematic universe with old and forgotten, public domain super heroes (and some not in public domain), they don't even resamble the original character, i just took the name and design so i can be lazy and not create one myself, and do whatever i want.
I do thar a lot. I'm not original enough to create myself. I look at deviantart and artstation, my ideas are all loking at images and characters design that other people did. I keep loking at images i saved to write because it's from there that i took my characters, ideas, plots and scenarios.
The houses of my magical school (boyestick, wisenfath, Fabwen and Magwenton) are takeb from the bothwell larpg
Back when i was young i created a story with haunted animatronics (fnaf) and with anthropomorphic Animals on a sci fi setting (TMNT and Max steel).
I keep creating scenarios where my works were published way before i was born or wheb o was a kid, and they replace what inspired them (such as my super heroes being published since the 60s) just because i know that they are cheap knock offs that will never be liked, because there's nothing to like on them. Literary, my magical school story can not even be published, it would be sued in half an hour.
I 'm a thief, i plagiarizer, that's what i do, i stole OCs, i get inspired by what other people do. I never created anything original in my life and o hate myself as an author for this.

2023.06.06 04:32 Exubion Sangromancy Possible Cantrip Mechanics Question
I have a player interested in building a full sangromancy character. I've been able to find some other blood-based spells and adapt them to the Grim Hollow rules to pad out the spell list but I'm not sure how to handle cantrips.
I like the idea of 1 hit die per level of the spell but with cantrips that seems an excessive cost. The best solution I've thought of is they lose 1 HP following cantrip dice progression, so -1 at 1st level, -2 at 5th, etc. This of course breaks with the design logic of the leveled spells. I also considered leaving it up to chance and having the possibility of losing a hit die during the casting tied to some roll, but this also feels a bit strange and subject to RNG.
I do want to maintain the cost/reward feel of sangromancy, so I feel as though having cantrips be an exception to the mechanic and following standard cantrip rules would defeat the point.
I'm wondering if there are any other solutions or if it might be best to just not have sangromancy cantrips.

2023.06.06 01:40 nomass39 I think my great grandfather witnessed something in the trenches of the Great War
I’ve been obsessing over this bit of family history lately, and a friend referred this place to me as a community that loves the mysterious and potentially supernatural, so I think you’ll find this interesting.
First, a history lesson: my great grandfather and his brother were privates in the 5th battalion of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in the first World War. Now, one of the lesser discussed contributions to the war effort was the General Post Office pulling off possibly the greatest feat of postal infrastructure that had yet been witnessed in history, transmitting literally millions of letters back and forth between the front lines daily, mail carriers from the REPS delving into hell and back time and time again just to make their appointed rounds. They’re often made fun of in the modern internet era, but the truth is, couriers have pretty much been hardcore badasses forming the backbone for all of human history.
Unfortunately, censorship was tight. Officers opened and checked every single one of their mens’ letters not just to check for confidential war information, but also to make sure they weren’t saying anything that contradicted the war propaganda or constituted ‘a threat to public morale’. Basically, unless you acted like the front lines were as peachy as a summer camp, your letter was liable to go right into the bin.
My great grandfather apparently tried to send many letters, but few made it through. It was likely officers of his own unit confiscated most of them, so they were probably left to rot in some trench, but he did one day feel either brave or desperate enough to try to sneak one by in what they called an Honour envelope, or ‘green envelope’. These were special and infrequently allotted envelopes which were, supposedly, delivered without censorship, so long as the sender vowed to mention only personal matters under threat of harsh punishments. Unlike regular correspondence, only a tiny fraction of green envelopes were opened up and combed over by staff back at base. Unfortunately, this letter was one of those terribly unlucky ones.
Most confiscated letters were just destroyed. In many cases, their senders were given no notice their mail had even been withheld, although the lack of a reply usually made it obvious. After the war effort was over, many surviving confiscated letters were given over to archives for the education of future generations, and a few others even found their way, at long last, to their original intended recipient, if they were still alive to receive it. That is how my great great grandmother came to finally be delivered the last letter he ever sent, many years after his death.
My family hoped that it would maybe comfort her, offer her some closure over the deaths of her sons which she never seemed to quite recover from. Instead, whatever was in that letter only mortified her, and she claimed to have had it burned. She passed away from heart complications not too long after. My grandmother said it was a bittersweet day; sad as it was to see her go, she’d lived a long, long life, and they were sure she was overjoyed to finally rejoin her husband and sons in the everafter.
Imagine our surprise, though, when my mother dug up the original letter tucked away in a drawer of scattered documents while cleaning out the attic of the old family estate.
The old iron gall ink was so faded over the years, we had to visit a photographer’s shop just to be able to carefully piece together the full letter under their UV light setup. We expected some sentimental goodbyes, some waxing philosophical about the insanity of war, you know, the usual. We couldn’t have been more wrong.
My family’s been bandying about possible explanations for the letter for years now. Most agree that it was probably a dream, or maybe some sort of hypnagogic hallucination brought on by the stress of combat. Another theory is that he’d made it all up entirely, as some sort of artistic statement — he had been a published author before the war, after all, and his purple prose seems implausible for someone describing a mind-shattering trauma.
Still, nothing makes complete sense to me. He must’ve had some notion these may be his last words, a final opportunity to relay what happened to his brother and say goodbye to his mother. Would he really waste them on something that wasn’t true? No matter how many times I read over my grandfather’s words, it always makes me wonder: perhaps he really did see something, down there in those blood-soaked trenches?
I’ll let you judge for yourself.
To my mother,
Henry died yesterday. My mind quivers with the memory of those leaden volleys bursting through his chest like a needle pierces a vein. The blood’s faded, now, but I can still feel the little red droplets, like they’re still warm upon my cheeks. I wish I could tell you he cried out your name in the last, but in truth, he was simply gone; extinguished in the instant of a muzzle flash, existence having clawed its way, baying and writhing, up from oblivion, to taste from the waters of life for a trifling moment before being once more consumed by those deep black seas of nothingness. That was all I could see before the gas flooded the trenches once more, and I could only flee, wailing, past the twisted bodies of my countrymen as the gas consumed them; red veins bulging thickly over jaundiced flesh like strings pulled taut over a violin; figures fading, twisting, peeling, bulging, faces wide-eyed, open-mouthed, but silent.
I wish I could tell you that these horrors shook me to my core, but I have become inoculated to them to an extent that frightens even myself; the war proceeds like a blurred and abstract haze around me, each day indistinguishable from the next, dispensing its horrors like a machine, unthinking, unfeeling in its destruction of life. Though he was my brother, his loss failed to shake me, and his name died out on my lips just like it did my countrymens’. Indeed, the true horror did not set in upon his death, but rather, upon his return.
It was during the twilight hours beneath the waning moon that I alone sat alert, watching the moonlight dance a waltz with the wisps of fog, like spiny grey fingers stretching up from the turgid soil, when my eye caught a glimpse of movement from one of the piles of bodies littering the no man’s land beyond the trenches. Words cannot express the horror th at assailed me when I beheld my own brother, crawling from the charred pile with an inhuman lurch. His jaw was slack, clinging to his pale face by scarlet strings of tendons, his eyes swirling with an implacable, cloudy mist of white, emptied of feeling as he limped obstinately through the battle-scarred fields, even as his pierced chest oozed a black ichor.
For too long, this campaign has left me sleep-walking through life, without passion; yet this sight was a grand exigency, lifting me to my feet as if stirring me from some terrible trance. I followed, creeping through the trenches, peering up over the battlements, not daring to make the faintest sound as I observed the grim procession of the thing which was once our dear Henry. The battlefield was more quiet than it had ever been, not a sound audible over the gentle weaving of the wind through the branches of trees, until at last my ears picked up the faintest traces of — music.
My mind recoiled, picking apart the sound, as if unable to accept it as anything more than a flight of fantasy; but the tune persisted, draped over the battlefield like a warm blanket, filling my heart with terror and awe in equal measures, until, at last, I reached the very border of the trenches, and had followed Henry as far as I was able. I peered up at him a final time — and my hand is quivering now, as if it’s committing some mortal sin just by immortalising this blasphemous sight in ink.
There was some uncountable legion of them, their forms nebulous and abstract as they darted in and out of the swelling fog. There were Russians and Germans and Austrians all in communion, and some were more ancient still, man-at-arms from ever more distant and primitive times; across time and nationality, all were united in the primeval dance of war, whooping and wailing as they cavorted across the battlefield, pale flesh clinging to brittle bones. Henry, or what remained of him, locked arms with the promenade of the dead as if they were old friends, his face twisted into some noiseless caricature of laughter.
My mind struggled most of all to comprehend the ever more monstrous silhouette they danced around in undying supplication, their twisted bodies connected to the great beast with scarlet strings. It was a cyclopean creature, a thousand faces bulging from its malformed flesh, their features blackened by shadow; said flesh had been torn through in scattered patches, revealing only a burning, undying fire raging in its hollow belly, from which the faint cacophony of battle could be heard; and in its many hands, it clutched the instruments of war, from glittering swords and rotting firearms all the way down to the bloodied stone that had felled Abel some eons ago. I watched as if spellbound, unable to so much as breathe as their waltz unfolded before me; until at last, their dancing slowed, and the entity unhinged its rapacious maw. Two by two, the young men goose-stepped into the behemoth’s jaws, driven by some unholy sense of duty to allow their existences to be snuffed out without feeling, without ceremony, their names never again to be uttered by a human soul.
It was at that moment, I awoke in the trenches, as if roused from some grand and terrible dream - but no dream could match the vividness of what I beheld beneath that callous moon. I do not know why I write this; I know these letters never reach you, mother. Perhaps I write this out of some vain hope to relieve myself of being alone in what I had witnessed in those final moments; as, just moments before stepping into that darkened maw, Henry turned and let his pearly eyes meet with mine, raising a rotted finger, and he beckoned to me, with a twisted smile not formed of malice, but of love.
It was at that moment that I knew I would never again see your face; never again soak in the fragrance of your cooking and the chirping of woodpidgeons in the cabin I had once called home. If you ever read this, I am so sorry, dearest mother - but the morning your children stepped into these boiling trenches, war already had us clutched in her pallid hand, dangling us above the fire for but a few futile moments until it was time for us to join her in her immortal dance!
With love,
JH
My grandfather didn’t survive long enough to be court-martialed for trying to sneak this letter by. He went MIA while fighting in the Second Battle of Ypres before his letter even reached London. His body was never recovered, but his name is still immortalised on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing.
May we all pray that the world is never wracked by another war of such a scale again.

2023.06.06 01:39 Thuper-Man Should a DM pull his punches just for a satisfying end game?
So we just had our final encounter for the campaign, and they were all at LVL 16. They knew that they were facing off against a major monster that they had faced before and had to flee for thier lives. Coming at it again at the close of the campaign, they were a few levels higher, but they did no other preparation. They didn't research it's weaknesses IC or try to seek out specific buffs or defensive spells to offset it's attacks or legendary actions. First round half the party were stunned and one lost the int roll against an intellect devourer, and immediately started attacking the party. It was sure to be a TPK, so I had an NPC step in prepared just in case, but they clearly deserved to die for thier foolhardy attack, but I pulled my punches at the last moment to allow them to draw to a close more satisfying for the players.
I feel conflicted afterwards though. Is the victory hollow? Should I have made the encounter more easy, or would that not be any different? Would you all have done anything different?

_____________________________________
Continued From Part 6 Dr. Abernathy threw up her hands in frustration again as the infuriatingly smug cyborg in front of her gave yet another counter explanation as to his actions.
“I’m just saying, I had the opportunity to test the system, aren't you happy that we found my breaking limit? I mean, what if I need to jump to save myself in the future, now I know how high is too high.” Abel explained, immobile on his charging platform.
Dr. Abernathy shook her large furred head and huffed “No, I am not happy. You destroyed valuable equipment for a stupid reason. And yes I am glad you are okay, but I can’t just slap a new pair of legs on you whenever I feel like it. They need to be precisely calibrated and attuned to your individual nervous system.”
Abel looked a little taken aback “But, that's the point of cybernetics right, that they are replaceable?”
“Replaceable yes, but you are more than simple cybernetics. Your limbs are more like mechanical reproductions of your preexisting limbs. More like mechanical bionics than true cybernetics, truly one of a kind. And so, much more difficult to replace.” She said with a sad headshake.
At the corner of the room another voice interrupted “So, you can fix him though right doctor?”
She turned and saw the slim nerivith man sitting at one of her workstations. It was Abel’s new partner, what was his name? Bittu, she mused idly. He was partially responsible for this disaster. “And you, you should have stopped him from doing something so moronic. Don’t think you are getting out of here without a lecture either.”
Bittu ducked his head and raised a submissive hand before attempting to hide behind her consoles again.
She sighed heavily and turned back to Abel. His legs had been entirely removed and his movements once more inhibited so he wouldn't injure himself further. “I have been doing some testing after this incident with new models. I think I might have found a way to strengthen your leg joints to withstand that kind of pressure.” she held up a hand before he could speak. “Note, I am not authorizing more of your moronic behavior, but I will try to prevent such catastrophic failure of your hardware if such an event were to occur again.”
Abel smiled at her widely. “Why thank you Dr. Abby, I sure do appreciate it.”
She shook her head and looked back at the pink skinned man trying to disappear into the corner of the room. Gesturing towards Officer Xeem she said “You, come over here.”
Bittu stood jerkilly, the pink nerivith’s sinuous tail twitching in consternation. Nevertheless the man did approach and stop a couple meters from where she was working on Abel.
“Yes doctor?” he asked her. His face looked like that of a chastised child in her eyes.
She made a point of saying nothing for another few seconds and smiled inwardly as the man’s long tufted tail betrayed his nerves. Finally she spoke “Abel is a very valuable and expensive asset to this station and indeed this whole city. I want you to assure me you will treat them with the utmost respect.” the man nodded and she added “That also means keeping an eye on him as he is prone to do very illogical things in the name of proving a point.”
Bittu smiled slightly and looked up at her much taller form “Yes ma’am. I have started to notice that.”
Abel spoke up next “Hey, I’m right here next to you guys you know? I can take care of myself.” the cybernetic human said a little petulantly.
She shook her great furred head. “No, you can’t. You have proven that on multiple occasions. That’s the reason we had to stick you with a partner in the first place. If you can't take care of yourself we may have to reassign your partners to someone more suited to keeping you in one piece.” she threatened. Part of her hurt to say such harsh things to the otherwise sweet man, but it needed to be said and she had never been accused of holding back the truth before.
Abel looked a bit taken aback by the comment. “I won't be... But you can’t do that. I have a job to do, I am a part of the system. You can’t just pull me out of it whenever it suits you.”
She stopped him with an upraised hand, her datapad held low to her side as she tried to reassure him “Not me Abel. The ones I work for, you know that I'm just as much a pawn here as you are.” she glanced at the nerivith man still standing a little ways away. “Like we all are.”
Bittu raised a hand and asked “Wait, I’m not a part of this.”
Abel frowned, his head immobile and unable to move. “No, she’s right Bittu. You are a part of this now whether you like it or not. It’s too late, Tegu must have known. Why you Bittu? Why out of everyone in the precinct did you get chosen?” she heard him ask the man.
It was a good point, the two of them seemed to work together well yes, but not enough so to justify special treatment. She found herself staring at Bittu in curiosity.
He looked like he had just been asked what kind of death he would prefer, his face a mix of doubt and confusion. “I.. don’t know? I was a senior officer not on special assignment and in need of a partner.”
Abel said “Well, it doesn't matter. We are partner’s, and I won't abandon my duty Abby.” he said, his casual use of her name sparking a little tingle of delight in her mind. She suppressed it.
Tinkering with the machine she finished up on his repairs and said “Ok, these repairs will hold for general operations, but please, no jumping out of buildings or such nonsense. Once we get my new designs installed you will be better able to fulfill your strange heroic fantasies, but until then take it easy ok Abel?”
Abel smiled at her as she unlocked his body. He stepped down from the recharge station and flexed his legs. He nearly stumbled and she had to catch him to prevent him falling on his face.
“Whoa! These new legs are a little different than the other ones.” He leaned on her lower torso for support and her mind went a little wild with imagined ideas, which she once more quickly suppressed. By the Five what was happening to her. She was acting as if there was any chance of a relationship between them.
Shaking her head slightly to clear it she helped Abel to his feet and used her datapad to check for calibration issues. To her dismay there didn’t seem to be any, she cocked her head and frowned. Her ears twitched as she tried to understand what had caused him to stumble then.
Abel stood and pretended to dust himself off and said ‘Well, uh, I think it's working now. I seem to be doing fine now, must have just been temporary paralysis.”
She frowned again, strange. Bittu piped up “Oh that’s good. We can get back to work now.”
Abel smiled and grabbed his helmet before turning to her and saluting “I thank you again fair lady. I’ll try not to break these ones.”
She found herself smiling, his demeanor always making her feel a little better about the whole situation. At least he didn’t seem to be suffering. She gave him a wave as they exited the door, a little sad that she hadn’t thought of anything witty to say. Nevermind all that, she had a lot of work to get done if she was going to provide the man with improved legs.
**********
Abel was suffering. Internally his mind was shattered by the phantom pain and the lack of true sensation. The terrible effects of the deadly condition known as the hollow trying to break his mind. He looked at the lanky alien walking next to him and latched onto his duty to him. Bittu needed him, he couldn't succumb to the pain when there were people on this world that still needed his help. Help that only he could provide.
Bittu glanced at him and frowned “Hey are you okay Abel? Those new legs of yours sure are neat. I wonder if I could get something similar done.” the man joked.
Abel blurted out “No!” He stopped in his tracks as he uttered the word, Bittu treaded a few more steps before stopping and turning to look at him.
“Hmm? What’s the big deal, I was just messing around Abel. Are you sure you are okay?” the nerivith man said a bit anxiously, his arms raised in a questioning manner.
Abel nodded stiffly and said “I am well enough to get back to work Bittu, I am.” He added as the other man looked ready to disagree.
Bittu shrugged and continued walking, Abel falling in by the smaller man’s side. “Well Mr. Look at me I'm so tough, we are not heading back out on patrol. Now before you ask why, it’s because we have a friend waiting for us in interrogation. Usually I like to get to them quick, hit the iron while it’s hot you know?” The man said rhetorically.
Abel said “But I'm guessing you were waiting for me to get put back together. I apologize again for the inconvenience.” he said a little dejectedly.
Bittu slapped him on the shoulder and then winced as his alloy armour must have hurt the man’s hand. “I, no. It’s perfectly fine buddy. We are just letting the fucker stew a bit, by the time we get there he will be sweating bullets. Nothing good ever comes from a long pre-interrogation wait. It usually means we have a lot of shit on you.”
Abel nodded and said “I guess that makes sense. What do we have on them?”
Bittu dodged a blood splattered Havoc trooper and shook his fist at the power armoured figure who didn’t even seem to notice. “Fuckin prick… Lords I hate those guys. They think they are so superior. Bah, anyways, your question… Right! Well, to be completely honest not very much. We know his name and checked it against his gene profile. His list of known associates is shorter than my love life.” he said with a chuckle.
Abel cocked his head and asked “So, we don't have anything on him but assault and the attempted murder of a police officer?”
Bittu sighed and said “Well, technically we don’t even have that. You knocked him out before he ever fired off a shot, so all we have is a single case of breaking and entering and assault and battery charges. Not enough to burn him, barely even enough to hold him for interrogation.” the man grumbled.
They turned a corner and were suddenly in a different part of the station. The walls were armour plated and lined with heavy metal doors. Cameras were present along every flat stretch of wall and several armed officers patrolled the hall, looking a little bored.
It was one of the interrogation blocks of the Hollow Pass precinct. Abel looked through several of the doors as they passed but saw nothing. The doors were airlocked to minimize chances of prisoner escape and the rooms were adjoining so the prisoners were totally isolated from the outside. That combined with one-way glazmite mirrors and it was futile to try and guess as to their occupants.
Bittu led them past another dozen rooms before stopping at one labeled as interrogation room twenty four, block sixteen. Following the nerivith man inside they entered into a small side chamber that had two doors. One said interrogation and the other was labeled observation.
Bittu motioned for him to take the observation booth and he did so, opening the door and entering the small dark room. Inside were a few chairs and table as well as an entire wall of recording equipment. Abel didn't bother with the equipment, he was as good a recorder as the machines were, maybe better as he could understand inflection and test to see if they were lying via their biometrics.
He sat at one of the folding metal chairs and it creaked ominously. Ignoring the chair’s dire warning he directed his attention to the one way glazmite mirror. Inside a small white room with his hands cuffed to the table was Thaee. The diminutive swanith man looked a little worse for wear. His chin was stained light green with dried blood and his feathers were in need of a preening session, dirty and rumpled as they were.
The man looked up sharply as Bittu walked in, the door closing with a heavy thud behind him. Thaee made a low warbling sound of discomfort as Bittu stood directly across from him. Bittu had been carrying a folder of mostly blank papers that he dropped flat onto the surface of the table with a loud slap causing the shackled avian man to jump.
Bittu then pulled out his chair and sat, taking time to adjust his uniform and hair as if he had all the time in the world. All the while Thaee was getting more and more nervous, his golden eyes flicking to the folder over and over, likely wondering what information it contained.
Now to be fair Bittu had managed to dig up some information on the man while Abel had been getting his repairs done. It wasn't much but if Bittu played the cards right he might just be able to leverage the rest out of the man without him even realizing he was giving them new information.
Bittu sat up straight and then started to stare at the nervous criminal, Thaee getting more and more jittery as the seconds passed by. Finally Bittu reached for the folder and dragged it to him.
Thaee burst out suddenly “I didn’t do anything man, you have no right to hold me here!”
Bittu raised a single eyebrow and said nothing, instead just opening the folder in such a manner that the other man couldn't see its contents. He flipped through a few of the random pages as if he was looking over some complex dossier on the man.
Thaee again said “You have nothing against me, you can’t hold me like this. I want a lawyer.”
Bittu nodded and said “Alright then, we will get you a lawyer. But as you were apprehended at an active crime scene and we have all the evidence we need to put you away it won't do you any good. All it’s going to do is drain your bank account and leave you destitute in prison.” he said with a certain amount of grim confidence.
Thaee looked around and said “Hey, you didn’t read me my rights! What kind of place are you running here?”
Bittu checked his chest and said “Oh shit, what do you know, my bodycam seems to have malfunctioned. And so has our recording equipment? Oh bummer, well, that's just a terrible thing now isn't it… Friend.” the nerivith said menacingly.
The swanith scrunched inwards, trying to make themselves look small and pitiful. It didn't work.
Instead Bittu asked “So, are you listening? Because this is how it is going to be. I tell you a name and you confirm the information I have or it's going to get bad for you. You lie to me and I might have to bring in my associate.” Bittu said, jerking his head towards the two way glazmite Abel was sitting behind.
It was at that exact moment that the chair Abel had chosen decided to give up the ghost and collapsed, dumping him straight on his armoured ass. The thud must have made it into the interrogation room as the swanith man jerked in terror and exclaimed.
“That thing is here? Is it watching?” Thaee tried to pull away but was held fast by their handcuffs.
Bittu frowned slightly but continued on saying “So I will do you this favor. You were read your rights when you were brought into the precinct, I am not required to read them to you again as I was your arresting officer. Between the two of us, I don’t give a fuck about you. I could cut you loose onto the street with a probation if you do the right thing here. And that is to tell me what I want to confirm.” Bittu said, manipulating the man's fears to pry the information they sought out of him.
Thaee nodded and said “But if I talk then I am going to have a target on my back.”
“And what if you were to be thrown in prison with the rumor that you spilled your guts to us huh? How long do you think you would last in that situation? At least I'm giving you even odds of a comfortable existence.” Bittu said with a shrug. “Enough chit-chat. Tell me about Mr. Zaplin. What was the point of the hit?”
Abel had stood and moved closer to the window to get a better view, the remains of his previous seat scattered about behind him.
Thaee paused and then spoke slowly. “I don’t know him. But that wasn't important for the job. I was hired.. to do a job and that's all. We were just supposed to shake the man and get the money. But…” he trailed off.
Bittu picked up, closing the folder and saying “But, he couldn't pay. And so you and the boys roughed him up as a warning. But it looks like your friend Craig was a little too rough. Yeah, I saw the claw marks on the man's face. Pretty brutal by the looks of it.”
The small feathered alien winced, clearly not liking the memory either. “I wasn't responsible for any of that. I was not part of the.. of the roughing.”
Bittu tsked and asked “Do you have any proof of your noninvolvement? He is pressing charges, and they are currently all directed at you. Two counts of first degree assault with a deadly weapon, breaking and entering, a battery charge. Harsh to be sure, a minimum of six years in the vault. An upstanding citizen like yourself, adding the kidnapping and harm to a minor charges on top of that? Oh man, looking more like thirty to life.”
Bittu smiled as the man spouted “It wasn't me though, that was all Craig and Hobbes! They are the sadistic ones that like to hurt people, I’m only there to manage contacts!” the man cried out, his voice filled with terror at the thought of life in maximum security lockup.
Abel smirked, Bittu had the man exactly where he wanted him. He was nearly ready to break.
His partner stood and paced in front of the mirror for a minute before putting his hand to his ear as if he were listening to someone speak. Casting a slight glance at the mirror he said “Well, It looks like you haven't convinced them. You are going to have to be more specific.”
“Specific about what?” The man asked in dread.
Bittu sat back down slowly and opened the dummy folder once again. “Well, to start, why not tell me the whole truth about why you were at the apartment? You were there to rough up Mr. Zaplin sure, but what about his daughter?”
Thaee looked around the room and shook his head “That was entirely Hobbes’ idea, I had nothing to do with that!”
Bittu nodded and said “Yes I know. It was your own opinion that the girl should have been iced. Is that correct?”
The swanith warbled in shock, their beak hanging open and their inner pharyngeal jaws opening and closing soundlessly as they tried to come up with a response. Instead Bittu spoke up, looking at the folder and flipping a few pages before he said “It seems that your exact words were, and I quote. ‘Why did we have to keep this little shit alive again?’ Am I correct in assuming that you meant to cause the infant great bodily harm or even death?”
The prisoner spluttered, the sound strangely muted as their vocal cords struggled with the sound. “I would, never have. No, I wouldn't have done it!” the man cried out. “I was just tired of doing all of his dirty work.”
“Oorin Jr’s dirty work I assume?” Bittu said, causing the small avian man to freeze. “I thought so, that confirms our interior contact’s data.” he lied.
Thaee looked utterly defeated, his head slumped and his expression feathers limp. He grumbled something under his breath that Abel couldn't hear, but Bittu seemed to hear fine as he replied “Yes you likely are. So the way I see it you have only two options. You tell us everything you know and I get you an informant's pardon. Or I dump you in the vault with a target on your back. Which sounds like your best odds? And I warn you, I will not make this offer again.” Bittu leaned back in his chair as he finished talking, his hands folded neatly on the table and the folder closed under them.
Thaee seemed to struggle with immense inner turmoil before he relented. “Alright, I will loose the nids, you gotta protect me though. Oorin is crazy, he has contacts in this department…” Bittu jerked slightly in surprise but the man didn't seem to notice or care as he kept right on talking “..and they feed him a constant stream of alerts. You two weren't supposed to be there, that's the only reason you caught us. The closest officers we knew about wouldn't have made it to the building in time to stop us. Just my dumb luck.” the man chirped in despair.
Bittu cocked his head and said “These police contacts, I assume you have no information on them?”
Thaee sat up straight and said angrily “I said I would tell you everything I knew. I may be a criminal but I'm not a liar.”
Bittu put up his hands apologetically and said “My apologies. I wasn't meaning to impinge your honesty. But I needed to ask. Please continue.”
Thaee’s short white expression feathers fluttered in consternation but he spoke steadily “Well, it started with Oorin contacting Hobbes and asking for us to do some of his dirty work. I wasn't for it, we had always stuck to a few rules before that. No murder, no hurting innocents, but Hobbes wanted more money. And he didn't exactly care how he got it. Craig wasn't for or against it at first, but as the jobs got more violent he started to develop a taste for the violence. That's not what we used to stand for, but who am I to make the decisions. I'm just little Thaee, small and weak, not worthy of giving the great Hobbes advice.” The man spat, fluttering his wings. His graspers were still cuffed and so he sighed.
“But what about Oorin, if we can connect this to him…” Bittu began but Thaee stopped him.
“You know, I have no reason to protect a brutish dancer like you.” The swanith’s casual use of the slur made Bittu bristle slightly, the man's tufted tail lashing in suppressed anger. “But I can tell that you aren’t a dirty cop on Oorin’s payroll. You seem to want to protect people, and I do respect that for what it's worth.” Abel heard the man say quietly.
Abel was tempted to enter the room but he trusted his partner’s judgment. Bittu would call for him if he was needed, as of the moment it seemed that he was doing just fine on his own however.
Thaee added “It has something to do with new shipments of something, that's what I picked up on. But I never figured out what Oorin was so bent on moving.”
Bittu stood and began to pace again, the movement seeming to clear his thoughts. “Why would Oorin go through so much trouble to protect the docks though?” he wondered aloud.
Abel thought about it. Oorin was in charge of transportation, that meant he was likely not the end of the supply chain. He must be moving illegal products and getting it from somewhere else. That was the only thing that made sense to him.
Bittu looked at the man and said “Hold on a minute. I’ll be right back.”
Thaee lifted their shackled wings and said “Where could I possibly go?”
Bittu didn't answer, instead he left the room and after a moment Abel saw him enter into the observation room. Bittu stopped and looked around “Had a disagreement with the furniture huh?”
Abel glanced at the remains of the poor chair he had crushed and answered “Yeah, I should have expected that outcome. I decided that standing isn't so hard with mechanical limbs.”
Bittu walked over to the small plasteel table and leaned on it, his face unreadable. As he opened his mouth to speak Abel’s internal comm’s buzzed and he held up a hand. “Getting a communication.” he frowned as he saw the content of the message. “I’m getting a general warning that Thaee is no longer in our jurisdiction. That can’t be right though.”
Bittu looked around and stood, his hand flying to his sidearm as his stress levels soared. “What! What do you mean?”
Abel frowned again “We have been ordered to cease all interrogations activities and relinquish control of the prisoner to… What the fuck?”
“To who? What are the orders?” Bittu asked seriously.
Abel looked at him and said shakily “We are to hand the prisoner over to Zeirworks security personnel, but, those are the people who made me.” Abel said in distress.
Bittu looked at him with a similar expression of shock. “That’s not good, something is definitely wrong here…” the man said as Abel nodded, looking at their unfortunate prisoner through the one way glazmite mirror.

2023.06.05 22:33 gweleif Another game concept: Ahegao Fhtagn
"Lovecraftian" monsters have tentacles and hentai special encounters have tentacles. Now the two have come together. In this game you play as a Japanese high school girl by day, wicked sorceress by night. The gameplay is accordingly divided into the day and night periods. During the night, when all of the action happens, you draw the magic circle in the basement and set to conjuring one by one entities from the grimoire. When the Elder Darks come sluicing, wobbling and rolling through the portal, they expect to be worshipped and implored for dark powers. Instead they are seized and dragged into perverted all-orifice sex! This part of the game belongs to the fighting genre - wrestling, in fact: you on one side with a bar, the entity across with its own bar, except that actually the two of your are coiled in the middle. The entity attempts to flee back through the portal with awful sobbing and mewling, while you stroke it in strategic places to arouse it and get it to fill you with its ectoplasmic come - the nakadashi cream power pie. The bars represent Imagination, one of the game's two statistics. All of the moves and countermoves tap into this resource.
If the entity breaks free or you fail to excite it sufficiently before your Imagination runs out, it flees to its own world and may not be summoned for some nights. If you are victorious, the entity goes on your trophy shelf, Pokemon-style. It can be invoked on later nights as a pet to nibble and fibrillate the next, more powerful god. It can also be worn during the day as a cute accessory. Try the fuzzy green Umhom the Dweller Bellow ear muffs, the Ai've'du pink skirt, the Ethereal Mimeord vaporizer! These items give you a few special reply options and bonuses during the day half of the game, which is a static-background, heads-and-text boxes quest, mostly about who loves who. There are a few locations to attend: the classroom, the school grounds, the chess club, the grocery store, the home living room, and in all of them you must circumnavigate the attentions of a variety of lecherous men, from the classic bald shop owner to the green-haired supercute new math teacher and the fat stepdad (and the lesbian physical education instructor, and the lesbian but different chess club president), but not offend any too much so that you might earn money and buy or get as presents useful items like the hair-dryer, the handcuffs, fizzy drinks, powered coke and so on. These can be carried across to nightly battles and put to new uses. Conversations in the day part of the game tax Endurance, the other statistic, but replenish Imagination. All of the characters, though imposing, are attractive in some way, and the game will be lost during the day part if you allow yourself to be swayed by someone to human sex. This will make the power come inside you spoil and dash your ultimate design of achieving transcendence in the form of ahegao fhtagn - the Dream Mind Break.
To make you a little less lonely during this duplicitous quest there is a little helper, a chronicler and sometime narrator of the events. Every so often he pops up on the bottom of the screen: Shota-Kun, your snot-nosed younger brother. (I admit I see this fellow looking just like the little guy in "Shaman King.") He is very perverted himself, always spying on his sister (he never sleeps) and sometimes demanding favors for his help, but useful during the day and the night, when he can fetch and apply a trophy monster or item on request. He tosses the coke into the air over the helpless monsters, he sprints around on the carpet to raise static electricity for the nipple clamps and so on. You must be careful not to be caught drained of either Endurance or Imagination while he is on the scene, though, or he will take advantage of your vulnerable condition and - goobye, ahegao fhtagn!
I see the artwork for the title screen: the Michelangelo "Adam" touch - an elegant female hand grabbing a tentacle.

2023.06.05 22:22 AslandusTheLaster The Lighthouse Keeper
Original Prompt: [WP] You’ve recently started a new job as a lighthouse attendant. The job is great, and most days the peace and quiet are almost enough to make up for the others. Almost. See, when Eldritch abominations arise from the ocean, you’re the first place they go. Lucky for you, you’ve got a secret weapon. (
link)
It was obvious that the lighthouse was out of the way, but only walking all the way from the nearest town truly reinforced what that meant. If help was needed, it would take almost an hour of driving, followed by twenty minutes of walking just to get here, much less to get back. While that alone put me on edge, it only got worse as I got close enough to see the building itself properly. The walls and door seemed to be covered in scratches, and the smell of dead fish and salt hung in the air.
I knocked on the door, and waited for a minute. Then I knocked again, harder this time. Finally I pounded on the door as hard as I could. As my efforts continued to be fruitless, I pulled out my cell phone and began dialing the lighthouse keeper's phone, thinking that he may have already left. As I was typing in the number, the slot on the door opened, and a pair of eyes peered out.
"Who are ya?" the old lighthouse keeper asked from within.
"Uh, I'm the housesitter. Jon Nemoy hired me, he said to tell you not to be late. Not sure what he was referring to, but that's what he said," I said.
"Of course he did, the crotchety old recordkeeper just loves to take away our excuses for not attending these wastes of time," he said. The slot in the door slammed shut before the door itself swung open. The man behind it was definitely in his later years, his muscular frame etched with scars and an old-fashioned heavy linen coat hanging off his shoulders. "Well, you might as well come in, I'm not going to say I couldn't use a break..."
As the aged man held open the door, I stepped inside. The inside looked just as derelict as the outside, though it was less because of physical damage and more a simple lack of cleaning and housekeeping. Sand and dirt covered the floor, and the wallpaper was discolored and peeling off. There was a large harpoon hanging on the wall, which was covered in some sort of dried fluid I wasn't inclined to ask about.
"The job itself is simple enough. Stay here, turn the light on when it's needed, turn it off when it's not," he said, leading me up the stairs.
"How do I know when it's needed?" I asked.
"Well, my predecessor put up this chart to gauge the light," he said, tapping on an old, sunbleached poster that hung on the wall near one of the windows. "But it's gotten a bit faded. There's a better way though, you see that rock out there in the sea?"
The old man gestured out the window toward a white rock that stood just off the coast, hard to miss compared to the vast nothingness of the open sea.
"When you stop being able to see it, the light needs to be on," he said, continuing up the stairs.
As we reached the top, he gestured toward the massive light.
"This place was built centuries ago, but the light got replaced recently so it shouldn't give you any trouble. Just flip that lever and it'll start up," he said, patting the heavy iron level sticking out of the floor. Despite his flippancy, it looked like it would be difficult to move it without six inch biceps.
"I should probably ask, how long will you need me to stay?" I asked.
"Who the hell knows? Grandmaster Nemoy could be done in an hour, in which case I'll be back in the morning, or it could be weeks before whatever vote he's calling us in for gets resolved," the keeper said.
"I see," I said, pulling out my cell phone. I quickly began composing a text to my boss, to give her a head's up about the details of the job that I hadn't been informed of, such as the fact that we didn't have a solid timeframe for it.
"Oh, I see, yes that could be a problem," the old man said. From the angle, it was unlikely he could see my phone, but he quickly began walking back down the stairs. They squeaked like angry seagulls as we descended. He stopped at the bottom, planting a hand on the rotary phone that jutted out of the wall.
"Phone numbers are in that book. The first page is Marina's restaurant, they'll deliver here but make sure you tip at least 30% since they have to come so far. Second is the grocer, they won't deliver but if you put the order in before you head out then they'll have everything ready by the time you arrive. Third is... Ah, I really am becoming a salty old dog, I nearly forgot to warn you," the keeper said, turning back toward the door. From this angle, I could see that there was a large wooden beam that could easily be dropped over the brackets on the sides of the entryway to hold the door shut.
"If you see anything... weird at the door, don't let it in. This place is so out of the way you shouldn't be getting any visitors at all, so treat anyone who comes with suspicion. In case they DO get in, well, that harpoon isn't just for show," the old man said. "There's a rifle hidden under the light upstairs if you need it, but that's more in case you're up there when something happens. If all else fails, and ONLY if all else fails, go into the basement."
I looked around, not seeing any way to the basement. The old keeper tapped his foot on the ground, a hollow sound revealing the hatch near our feet. It was sturdy, and nearly invisible thanks to all the sand.
"And in case you didn't catch it the first time, DO NOT go into the basement unless you absolutely NEED to. Davy Jones hates to be woken up, and he will absolutely try to escape if given the chance, but he will protect you from whatever is trying to get you... In any case, the third page of that book has the number for the Order of the Purging Light, make sure you report anything that happens to them. It's not my job to hunt monsters, and it certainly isn't yours, so let the people who are meant to do that job know that there's work to be done," the keeper said.
"Uh... I'm not sure all of this is in my contract," I said.
"I'm sure the Grandmaster can afford to pay you extra for the trouble, and it's not as hard as it sounds. Most nights you'll just be sitting around anyway," the keeper said. "Oh, and if you need to go to town for any reason, there's a key under the phone book and a dock down the right-hand path from the front door. It's only a twenty minute trip by boat, even with that shoddy old dinghy I keep down there."
"Twenty minutes? But it took over an hour to get here by car!" I said.
"This place is older than the steam engine, it was meant to be trafficked by boat. Yes, it's a bit of a flaw that the main line of access is by sea given that the building is meant to warn away ships, but you can blame the first keeper for that," the old man said. "Anyway, that's the job, I should get moving before Ol' Nemoy gets his hackles up over me being late."
As he turned toward the door, someone knocked on it from the outside.
"Oh for fuck's sake..." the old man said. He walked over and opened the eye-level slot to peer outside. I crept up next to him and got just enough of an angle to see what looked like me standing outside.
"Hello! I'm the housekeeper! Let me in so I can keep the house for you!" Not-me said. Even through the door, the smell the sea wafting off of them, overwhelming the ambient stink of the lighthouse interior.
"You're too late, Cindy, the housekeeper is already here," the old man said.
"I am not Cindy, I am the housekeeper known as Crawfish," my doppelganger said. I was already starting to feel a little offended at her terrible accent, even though it didn't resemble my own voice at all.
"Actually it's Crawford," I said.
"Of course, what a silly mistake! I am the Crawford known as Crawfish," the doppelganger said.
"Kid, don't help the siren. She will try to eat you if you let her in," the keeper said.
"Please open the door soon! I am very tired and need to sit down!" the siren said.
"Just go back to the sea, Cindy, we're not fooled," the keeper said.
"I am not this Cindy, but I do suddenly have to do something back at my land vehicle. I will return soonly," the siren said.
The keeper waited as my doppelganger walked away from the door and down toward the dock path. She moved awkwardly, as if her bones were aligned in a manner that could be considered somewhat unconventional for a human.
"Yeah, she'll probably be back in a few hours, maybe several times before she gets bored. Like I said, don't open the door for anything, not even me. I have a key if I need to get back in, and while she's a terrible actor she's quite a proficient shapeshifter," he said.
The old man opened the door, stepping through and slamming it shut behind him. I could hear the door lock, and began settling in for what could end up being a very long job.

2023.06.05 21:58 Guillaume_Hertzog [PC] [demo - possibly never fully released] [estimated 2016-2018] psychological first-person puzzle game with chapters
I don't remember a lot about the game, as I only saw a few videos about it a few years back. What I can recall, is that the game started with the protagonist in a dark narrow corridor, some sort of basement, where there were barrels(?) and puddles of an unknown glowing liquid. There was a short tutorial on how to use objects, hide behind cover, and even possibly how to use the protagonist's instinct. Then the player would find an elevator.
I can't precisely recall the chronology of events in the game; I know the player would then explore an old fashioned apartment building. There were numbers above doors that would change to other numbers when the player looked away; and paintings which would also change to other images when left unattended. There also was a monster at some point that roamed inside a corridor; the monster has a bright glowing face that shone a light towards whatever it was facing.
In that same apartment building, there was an office where the player would find a phone ringing. On the phone, the antagonist would give a speech; and then I think they'd be some kind of time jump (the apartment suddenly changed in appearance like we were transported into the past).
In another part of the game, the protagonist was in some sort of mall or department store at night. The doors were closed, and the player would explore aisles full of clothes(?) or empty shelves. The place would be populated by an invisible ghost (I think a woman?) And the player would need to look inside large oval mirror located around the aisles to actually see the ghost. I remember the player has a way to harm the gost in some way, but I'm not sure what exactly.
In between chapters of the game, the protagonist would hallucinate/dream, and be transported into a strange nightly realm with giant cassette tapes embedded into the sand in the distance all around the player; and as the player moved on a narrow winding path, there would be cassette tape players that would read conversations between characters, and give lore.
Sorry for the very hollow description, I've really only seen so much of the game online, but lately I've been really interested into playing it and rediscovering it. I've tried searching online, but nothing really came up.

Original prompt: [WP]You awake from cryo-freeze to find the world hasn't changed a bit, but you have. You are the first live subject to survive the revival process. Only, you're not the person they say you are. You remember your death. This isn't your original body. Now you must survive. (
link)
As I opened my eyes, it felt like the harsh light of day was digging straight into my brain. Around me was a grassy field with a few scattered trees. Familiar trees... Eerily so, as if they hadn't grown or changed at all since the last time I'd seen them. I wasn't sure how long it had been since I'd last seen them, but I was confident it had been a while. I could feel my memories flowing back, but it was not a comfortable process.
A few buildings stood in the distance, and I began walking toward them. It became immediately obvious that the ground was entirely artificial. The soil felt like it was made of rubber, and my bare feet were already sore from being abraded by the rough edges from where the soft plastic grass blades had been ripped out of a mold. The trees didn't seem much better, being made of hollow metal with plastic leaves, then smeared with latex to vaguely resemble an actual tree.
The buildings were part of a small hamlet, and were the only interesting thing in the field. Any other direction would've led to a reinforced concrete wall buried behind plastic foliage, so I had no qualms with getting straight to the point this time. I entered the hamlet cautiously, and found that it was just as artificial as its surroundings. The buildings looked like they were made of clay with thatch rooves, but on closer inspection were made of painted concrete. As I peered inside one of the buildings, it was obvious that the thatch roof was for show, as the concrete building didn't have an opening at the top.
The inhabitants were hardly any better. A mixture of holograms, animatronics, and cardboard cutouts, the ones that moved did so predictably and mechanically, and none of them even made a plausible facsimile of humanity. I recognized every one of the "people" in the hamlet, down to their names. It wasn't my first time in this town, and I felt like there was good chance it wouldn't be my last.
"Welcome traveler! Feel free to enjoy our quaint little town, and sample our hospitality, but be careful of the monster that lives in the mountains!" said Jeremy, the cardboard cutout standing outside the front of the hamlet said. He wore a suit of armor that seemed asynchronous with the impoverished vibe of the place he was guarding, but since he was made of cardboard I doubted it would alter his combat efficacy at all.
I didn't bother responding to Jeremy, since he would just repeat one of three lines that I already knew by heart. Instead, I headed down to the market in the center of town. The first stall was the fish merchant. He only sold salmon, cod, tuna, and herring, despite the fact that none of those fish could possibly live in the tiny fishing hole next to the hamlet and there was no ocean anywhere in the entire region. Also, the fish he sold came in cans, which seemed like a bit more of a red flag in hindsight.
"Howdy, stranger! Come check out my catch of the day! And don't forget, if you catch anything interesting, bring it here and I'll prep it up for ya!" The animatronic fishmonger said. His name was Finley, but I only knew that because of the nametag on his shirt, none of his lines involved giving that information.
I looked out at the fishing hole outside of town. I knew from experience that the pool of liquid was not water, but a highly corrosive acid that had been dyed blue, and would kill a person if they fell in. The fish-shaped bath toys floating on and just under the surface were corroded from the chemical, and were far slipperier than they had any right to be. Suffice to say I would not be partaking in the fishing minigame this time around.
Instead of engaging with the merchant, I followed the mechanical track he was mounted on back to the hut that was designated as his house, and walked inside. I remembered stowing something here... yes, there it was, a jar of gunpowder. It had been a pain in the backside to make, given that almost everything in this place seemed to be made of plastic and metal, and most things seemed to reset whenever I... "respawned", so I was glad to see it was still there.
My plan was going to be risky, so I needed to get it exactly right, and I needed to make sure I knew that it had been done, so I quickly went to the house that had my name on it. Well, the name of the character I was meant to represent, nobody in this region called me by my actual name. A hologram of a woman stood in the entry hall.
"Good morning Donnie! Won't you lie down and tell your dear mother all about your adventure?" she asked. Dolores was obviously not my real mother, but she did sort of "anchor" my memories, so it was good to visit her every so often. I lay down on the couch next to the hologram, which shifted to the sitting position. There were no in-between frames, so Dolores just seemed to snap into being seated, but I was familiar enough with that by now.
I felt a hum under my back, then got back up and headed for the door.
"Have fun on your adventure, sweetie!" Dolores said as I left.
Before leaving the hamlet, I walked back over to Jeremy, and tore the halberd off him, along with a segment of his arm (it was all part of the same piece, I couldn't really detach it without doing that). Then I strolled over to the inn, where the only fireplace in the region was roaring. I lit the tip of the cardboard halberd on fire and began jogging out of town and down the road.
I passed the valley of trials without trouble, having finished the area several times previous lives. The forest of wonders was no more problematic, though it did take a bit of time just due to the confusing layout. Getting past the monster cavern was slightly trickier due to carrying a lit torch, but I'd died enough times to know how to get through without trouble. Hell, none of the holographic monsters or mechanical boobytraps even went off this time.
Finally, I reached the segment I was looking for. A segment of actual solid stone wall among all the artificial material in the region. Knocking on the wall with my knuckles, I tracked down the spot I needed, a metal plate with open space behind it that had been decorated to look like the rest of the wall. I carefully sprinkled some black powder on the ground around the base of the metal plate and dumped out the jar on one side of it, then stepped back and tossed the burning halberd at the pile of explosive dust and ducked behind a rock as it went off.
As I had hoped, the metal plate was actually a metal door, and had been knocked off its hinges by the blast. I quickly ran up and pried it the rest of the way open, then sprinted into the tiled halls behind it. There was a room labelled "maintenance" just past the door, full of animatronic parts and cardboard cutouts. Some of them were in good repair, some were damaged (often in familiar ways, since I was probably the one that damaged them). I simply passed through the room and passed into a different hallway.
I ran into a young man wearing a lab coat as I ran down the hall. His name was Paul, but he had been an intern last I'd seen him and he now seemed to be a full-fledged employee. A look of recognition struck his face when he saw me.
"Dr. Corbin? Where on earth have you been?" he asked.
"Let's just say that we may need to take that whole 'clone adventure theme park' idea back to the drawing board," I said. "And if I ever see that rat-fink Franklin again, I'm going to wring his skinny neck."

2023.06.05 19:55 AllenVarney Lex Arcana - through Mon 26 June
Through
Monday, June 26 we present the
Lex Arcana Bundle featuring
Lex Arcana, the FRPG from Italian design team
Quality Games (published by
Acheron Games) of a magical Roman Empire that never fell. Travel the known world to study arcane lore, uncover conspiracies, and battle dangerous supernatural creatures. It's
Cthulhu Invictus meets
The X-Files – the HBO Max
Rome series meets
The Witcher. Dive into the mysteries and dangers of ancient Rome. The Emperor commands!
In our world we would call it the year 476 CE; in the alternate history of
Lex Arcana, the year is 1229
Ab Urbe Condita, "from the founding of the City." Heeding powerful haruspices and oracles, the Romans have suppressed forbidden cults and maintained their conquests. The Empire reaches from the beautiful beaches of Italia to the Egyptian deserts, from misty Britannia to the rivers of Babilonia. Yet now, after 12 centuries, the augurs speak of sinister portents. Despite the Empire's luxurious ostentation and military might, arcane threats eat at its foundations. In the great cities, cults make converts among the poor and dispossessed. On the frontiers, enemy sorcerers unleash frightening monsters against Roman garrisons. Emperor Theodomirus commands the
Cohors Auxiliaria Arcana to study inexplicable phenomena, uncover arcane secrets, infiltrate cults, and defeat dangerous supernatural creatures.
In
Lex Arcana you are a
Custos (warden) of the Cohors Auxiliaria Arcana. You left your former life to join a
contubernium of 3-6 Custodes, warrior-scholars of high privilege and great skill. Taking the office of Augur, Diplomat, Explorer, Fighter, or Scholar (or perhaps the sixth, hidden office, Assassin), you gain a special talent and the protection of a tutelary deity such as Apollo Phoebus, Diana Opifera, or Minerva Ingeniosa. Your
Virtutes (virtues) and
Peritiae (skills) determine how many dice you can roll to accomplish a task. You choose the number and type (d4, d6, d20, etc.) of dice to roll: For instance, if you have 12 points available, you might decide to roll a d12, or 2d6, or 3d4. Rolling fewer or smaller dice increases your chance for a fate roll (critical success).
Your
Pietas (piety) empowers magical divinations, or
Indigitamenta (invocations), in one of six discplines: Precognition, Clairvoyance, Retrocognition, Omens, Dreams, or Favor of the Gods. If you fail to honor the gods, or invoke them in vain, you may lose Pietas. And your invocations may weaken as you travel further from Rome.
Co-designed by Francisco Nepitello (
The One Ring), and funded in a big
September 2018 Kickstarter campaign, the 310-page
Lex Arcana Second Edition rulebook (2019) presents complete character creation rules, a 116-page section for the Demiurge (gamemaster), a bestiary of Greco-Roman monsters, and two linked full-length adventures. Get the rulebook, four gorgeous full-color setting guides, and ten scenarios in this
Lex Arcana Bundle for an unbeatable bargain price.
Pay just
US$17.95 to get all
three titles in our
Starter Collection (retail value
$65) as DRM-free .PDF ebooks, including the complete
Lex Arcana core rulebook (plus the free
Quickstarter) and the setting sourcebooks
Italia and
Encyclopedia Arcana.
And if you pay more than the threshold (average) price, which is set at $29.95 to start, you'll
level up and
also get our entire
Bonus Collection with
three more titles worth an additional
$56, including the regional sourcebooks
Dacia and Thracia and
Aegyptus and the ten-scenario collection
Mysteries of the Empire.
Ten percent of your payment (after gateway fees) goes to this
Lex Arcana offer's designated charity,
Direct Relief. Direct Relief sends protective gear and critical care medications to health workers, with emergency deliveries to medical facilities across the US and to regional response agencies across the world.

2023.06.05 17:44 IndigoCreepy Echo
I can't stand looking at myself in the mirror, but not for the reason you think...
I was paralyzed with fear as the reflection-like entity hovered menacingly in front of me. Its distorted features twisted into a grotesque smile, the malice in its voice cutting through the air like a chilling breeze.
"Who are you?" I managed to stammer, my voice barely audible. My heart pounded in my chest, threatening to burst through my ribcage. The reflection-like figure tilted its head, its eyes gleaming with a sinister light. "I am nothing but an Echo," it whispered, the words slithering into my ears like venomous serpents.
I jolted upright, gasping for breath. Sweat drenched my forehead as I realized it had all been a nightmare—a vivid and horrifying dream. I glanced around my room, seeking solace in the familiar surroundings.
I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The moonlight streaming through the window cast an eerie glow, intensifying my unease. As I sat up, my eyes were drawn to the mirror on the opposite wall. I stared at my reflection, half-expecting to see the monster from my nightmare. But the mirror only reflected my own terrified expression.
Taking a deep breath, I tried to convince myself that it was all just a product of an overactive imagination. Perhaps I had been reading too many horror stories lately, or maybe it was the result of the stress I had been under. Whatever the case, I needed to shake off this sense of dread and get some sleep.
I reached for my phone to check the time, hoping it was still early enough to salvage a few hours of rest. But as I grabbed it from the nightstand, a notification caught my attention. It was an email with a blank subject line. Confusion washed over me as I opened the email. The sender was anonymous, and the message contained only one sentence: "Did you sleep well Sarah?" My heart raced, and a chill ran down my spine. How did they know my name? And how did they know about my nightmare?
I quickly dismissed it as a sick joke, the work of an internet troll seeking to terrify unsuspecting victims. But as I tried to calm myself, another notification popped up on my screen. It was a video message from an unknown sender. Hesitant but curious, I clicked on it. The video started with darkness, but soon the image became clear. It was me, sleeping peacefully in my bed. The camera angle suggested that it was taken from within my room. I felt a surge of panic, realizing that someone had been watching me.
As the video played on, my eyes widened in horror. I saw myself tossing and turning, plagued by the nightmares that had tormented me earlier. But there was something different about this video. The room around me seemed distorted, as if reality itself was warping and twisting. The camera panned to the mirror on the opposite wall. I saw my reflection staring back at me with hollow eyes and a familiar malicious grin. It wasn't me; it was the twisted version of myself from my nightmare.
A chill ran down my spine as the video continued. The reflection started to move independently, its hand reaching out towards the glass as if trying to break through. I watched in horror as cracks formed on the surface of my mirror in real time, one by one, as they formed on the mirror in the video, spreading like a spider's web. The mirror was coming alive, its malevolent presence seeping into the room. I couldn't tear my eyes away as the reflection stepped out of the mirror, standing at the edge of my bed. Its voice echoed in a low, distorted tone, filled with malice. "Sarah, it's bedtime," it hissed, its words sending shivers down my spine.
In a panic, I reached for the lamp, desperate to dispel this nightmarish apparition. But as the light illuminated the room, the reflection vanished. I jolted upright, gasping for breath once again. "Was I still dreaming?" I pondered, my heart pounding in my chest. The room was bathed in the comforting glow of the lamp, and everything seemed normal. Had it all been just another nightmare within a nightmare? It felt so real, so vivid, but perhaps my mind was playing tricks on me once again. I took a moment to catch my breath, trying to steady my trembling hands. But as I surveyed the room, something caught my eye—the mirror was still cracked... This was a chilling reminder that the nightmare had not just been a terrible fever dream.
I rid my house of all mirrors in a desperate attempt to maybe sever its connection to my reality, and for a couple of weeks, it seemed to have worked. During that time, my life had returned to normal. The nightmares had ceased, and I began to believe that maybe the mirror itself was cursed, a gateway through which the malevolent entity had entered my life.
After a particularly exhausting day, I decided to indulge in a relaxing bath. The warm water enveloped me, easing away the stress of the day. I closed my eyes, allowing my mind to drift.
As I opened my eyes, I caught a glimpse of movement in the water. My heart skipped a beat as I saw my reflection, distorted and shifting beneath the ripples. Panic surged through me, and I tried to look away, but something held my gaze. My own eyes stared back at me from the depths of the water. The twisted reflection grinned with the same malevolent smile. It whispered in a voice that squirmed throughout my skin, "Did you miss me?"

Toxic Rats: Geoff, Scott, Trent, Leshawna, Sammy, Sierra
Mutant Maggots: Anne Maria, Katie, Molly, Scarlett, Dave, DJ
Episode 05: Backstabbers Ahoy
"Last time, on Total Drama Revenge of the Island!" Chris opened, the standard shot of the island quickly cutting to a clip of the campers hurriedly assembling in the common area between cabins as the recap montage began. "Twelve campers went on a scavenger hunt," a close-up of the screen that showed the scavenger hunt locations was next, "that was spoo~ky~!" he said in an appropriate tone, several scary eyes opening up in the hollow of a tree. "And very, very, painful," he added with a laugh as Leshawna was shown getting choked by the squid-tree while some of her teammates threw rocks at both her and the tentacle, and Geoff ran right into a minefield and got blown up.
"And when we thought it couldn't get any weirder," the host continued over a shot of Dave being wrapped up by the spider, "Arachna-Izzy showed up to do an eight-legged tap dance for a captive audience and her buddy Chef," the wild child's reveal was shown as was her shooting plungers at Chef. "Which turned out to be not so fun for her," Dave was shown pounding on the spider's abdomen.
"In the end, Katie left five teammates behind," the sweet girl was shown getting on the zipline, "and lost the challenge for her team," The Maggots were at the elimination ceremony. "Someone would've been eliminated, but I decided to be swell and call it a non-elimination just to keep tensions running," Chris laughed a bit. "And I also brought Sierra back into the game for fun," Sierra coming in unannounced was shown.
"Hey, it's my show. I can do what I want," the host said as the montage ended to show him standing on the Dock of Shame. "Who will ride the Hurl of Shame next? How many times can I laugh at them, before then? Find out right now, on Total! Drama! Revenge of the Island!"
XXXXX
A shot of the morning sun opened the episode, a flock of geese flying across the sky in formation in the distance. The scene cut to the girls of the Maggot cabin, the camera angled to show Katie and Scarlett awake.
The shot cut in close to Scarlett as she was deep in thought. "It's pretty fortunate for us to not lose a teammate last episode." Scarlett started her conversation with Katie.
Katie, who was brushing her hair, stopped when she was finished. "I know. Even though we lost, we still won in a way."
"But something still questions me about last time," Scarlett continued.
"What is it?" Katie wondered.
"I'm curious who would've gotten voted out since Chris didn't reveal the votes at all during our elimination ceremony," Scarlett explained.
Katie got uneasy hearing that. "Oh, I'm curious as well." She let out an awkward chuckle.
Scarlett easily saw how nervous her bunkmate was acting, and decided to press on. "You're not looking very comfortable. Care to explain what is bothering you?"
"The thing is, I voted for-" Katie tried to say, but was interrupted by Molly opening the cabin door.
"Good morning everyone," Molly greeted the two girls.
"Oh, Molly's here," Katie changed the subject. "Hi."
Confessional: Katie
"If I'm being honest, I voted for Scarlett in the last challenge," Katie admitted. "She was kind of acting cold towards us and didn't even feel as bad for our teammates getting captured."
Confessional: Scarlett
"She didn't say it, but I know they voted for me," Scarlett grimly said. "I suppose it's because of how I came off not showing my sympathies for my endangered teammates or for being too intellectual for them." She smiled proudly. "It would've been their loss had they gotten rid of me for I am the more academically skilled member of the bunch."
Confessionals End
"Guess what I found at the bonfire?" Molly eagerly said.
"What could you have found that would be beneficial for us?" Scarlett skeptically asked.
"I found this old mp3 player by one of the stumps," Molly pulled out the object. "I don't know how it got there, but I'm keeping it."
"If it's so old, why are you gonna keep it?" Katie asked her.
"It plays all the indie music from my favorite bands," Molly answered. "Modest Mouse, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, those types of people."
"I've never heard of them," Katie said. "Sorry."
"Well you're missing out," Molly shrugged before leaving.
Scarlett and Katie watched her leave for a few seconds before Scarlett turned to Katie. "If I'm being honest, I'm not a fan of indie-themed activities."
Confessional: Molly
Molly was listening to one of her indie bands on her mp3. "Come on, skinny love, just last the year!"
Confessional Ends
A pleasant tune played as the scene moved to a shot of the lake, a few red birds flying and tweeting past the camera. The perspective inverted to show Anne Maria sitting in one of the stump seats of the bonfire pit, filing her nails as a woodpecker stood on top of her poking at her hair.
"Hey, I wasn't expecting to see you up here so early," Geoff said, walking up from the right and immediately attracting Anne Maria's attention. He was in his swimsuit rather than his usual attire.
"I didn't have much of a choice," Anne Maria said. "Katie's snorin' is drivin' me nuts, and Scarlett is kooky with her sleep analysis or whatever."
"So you're doing your hair care out here?" Geoff wondered.
"Yup," Anne Maria replied. "Why are you out in your swim shorts?"
"The water was feeling pretty cool and refreshing, and I wanted to salvage the moment as quickly as I could," Geoff answered.
"I would've been in the ocean, but I have to be fully tanned before I can go into any form of liquid," Anne Maria continued.
"Your body is tanned?" Geoff widened. "Do you use orange paint?"
This comment quickly offended the hairspray girl. "Excuse me?! Did you just disrespect my tan?!" Anne Maria glared at the party boy.
Geoff instantly realized his mistake. "No no no. I'm just saying that I like your tan. It's pretty cool."
Anne Maria cooled down. "Oh right. Now I get it."
Confessional: Geoff
"If you didn't know, I tend to slip up when talking to chicks," Geoff opened up. "Anne Maria's a babe, and a super hot one, but I have to watch what I say if I don't want to get messed up."
Confessional Ends
The scene flashed to the girls' side of the Rat cabin, where Sammy was sleeping in her bed peacefully, until she got woken up by Sierra snapping a photo of her.
"Sierra! I'm trying to sleep!" Sammy shouted in anger, causing Sierra to be frightened.
"Sorry Sammy. I was just updating the sleeping section of this season's profile!" Sierra said happily.
"Sleeping section?" Leshawna said in bewilderment. "Who would want to see us sleep?"
"I don't even want to know," Sammy mumbled.
Confessional: Sierra
"Apparently, the viewers love to see the contestants in their pajamas," Sierra said. "They probably want to make fanart of them."
Confessional: Sammy
"Was I being mean back there? Sorry," Sammy sheepishly said. "I usually get cranky if I don't get my full hours of sleep, and with Sierra back, it's going to get worse."
Confessionals End
Over on the boys' side of the Rat cabin, Trent was putting on his shirt in order to get dressed fully. "Getting dressed is done. Now to play some music to get my day off on the right foot."
The cool guy got on his knees and stuck his hand under his bunk bed to find his guitar, and his face became more and more worried as he couldn't find his instrument.
"I swear I put my guitar under here!" Trent said to himself while peeking under his bunk.
Scott entered the cabin and saw Trent's predicament. "What seems to be tugging on your strings, guitar boy?" he asked.
"Someone stole my guitar," Trent responded. "I remember placing it under my bunk bed, but now there's no sight of it."
"Ultra fangirl returns, guitar goes AWOL. Do the math, and come eat breakfast before you starve of paranoia," Scott told Trent.
Confessional: Trent
"Scott's on the rough side, but he does have a point about me not needing to overreact about my guitar being taken," Trent stated. "Someone probably just took it as a practical joke, and I'm sure they'll return it back to me."
Confessional Ends
A loon called as the scene moved to the Mess Hall, cutting inside to the Mutant Maggots, who were seated at the forward table this time around, while the Toxic Rats had been forced to claim the table closer to the kitchen. All of them were eating what appeared to be trays of mostly meat – bacon and roast chicken and some kind of intestines, with a bit of mashed potatoes and an apple on the side.
DJ was in line with his tray out. After it got filled with breakfast, he smiled a bit. "This is looking pretty good," he said to Chef, to which the cook actually smiled in appreciation.
Dave walked up to DJ with his own tray. "This is too much protein," he complained out of Chef's view to DJ.
"I know," DJ told his friend. "I'm gonna see if I can use this to make a gift for Katie."
"Why do you wanna do that?" Dave asked him. "Are you into her?"
DJ looked at Katie making a house out of her food. "Look at her. She's creative, sweet, and totally full of life."
"I didn't know you were interested in her," Dave said.
"I didn't realize my feelings for her until later on," DJ told him before walking to the right. "I'm gonna go see if there's any more leftovers for my gift."
"Attention campers!" Chris announced through the loudspeaker. "Breakfast is cutting in to precious time that you could spend getting injured!" The shot cut to the loudspeaker outside as Chris laughed. "Grab your swimsuits and meet me at the dock, pronto!"
The campers, who'd already gathered in the middle of the lodge aside from Dave and DJ, began to groan and complain. "You have ten seconds to exit the Mess Hall," Chris added, "before I release...The Raccoon!"
"The raccoon?" Anne Maria repeated in disbelief, and the ten teens started to laugh as the camera pulled back and a large crate was lowered down from the ceiling on chains. It stopped just before it hit the floor, and the campers immediately looked at it with dread.
The front face of it was punched off, revealing the giant mutant raccoon inside. It roared, and with a shriek the two teams fled the building.
The camera cut to the entrance to the kitchen, where DJ was wheeling in a service cart full of the morning meal and whistling to himself. "Hey," he asked, apparently not hearing the warning. "Where y'all goin'? Oh well," he shrugged. "I'm gonna see what I can take from this cart!"
He put the meat into his shorts, unaware of the menacing shadow creeping toward him.
\
The scene cut outside to the campers catching their breaths, Chris watching them nearby with an impish smile.
"What were you thinking?" Scarlett asked him. "We could've been viciously assassinated by that intoxicated raccoon!"
Chris just laughed. "Nah, only if you got between him and food." He sent a pensive look off-screen and said "Team Maggot, looks like you're still missing a player."
The camera cut to the main lodge, where DJ was tossed out of a window with a scream.
"Nevermind," Chris said jovially.
\
The footage flashed ahead to the two teams assembled on the Dock of Shame in their swimsuits – On the left: DJ in his usual shorts, Katie in a white and black striped bikini, Scarlett in a black one-piece, Molly in a purple dotted two-piece, Anne Maria in a bikini with the same color scheme as her top, and Dave in a white tank top and a pair of trunks consisting of his normal attire's colors; On the right: Leshawna in a teal speedo, Scott in his red swim trunks, Sierra in a light and lime green bikini, Trent in his orange and brown swim trunks, Sammy in a white bikini, and Geoff in his normal shorts; Chris was in the middle. Each team also had an old-fashioned diving suit connected by hose to a hand pump lying between them and the host.
"Alright," Chris began, "here to help us get today's competition underway, say hello to one of our classic competitors, Brick!"
He motioned to the side and the camera zoomed out as the cadet arrived at the dock in a patched-up red canoe.
"I'm ready to go," Brick told the host, "but remember," he gave a reminder, "my contract said demonstration only."
"Relax," Chris smiled, "no demo needed! Just chum the water and try not to get eaten."
Brick reached into the canoe and picked up a bucket of green slop. He took one whiff of it and retched. "What is this stuff?" he asked in disgust.
"Leftovers," Chris grinned, "from last season."
"This almost smells as nasty as my boots," Brick shuddered.
It was then that Fang rose out of the water and chomped down on the end of the boat, devouring the bit of chum that had been spilled on it and forcing Brick to yelp and dart over to the back of the canoe.
"This is highly not acceptable!" Brick scolded him.
"Challenge, part one!" Chris moved on. "Each team must get a pair of water-skis in an underwater mission." The shot cut underwater as he spoke, showing two sets of water skis tied to a pair of rocks on the lake bed. A school of vicious, spiny fish swam past from the right to the left, and a second later a school of eels passed through from the opposite direction. "Or drown trying," the host added as the camera zoomed in on the skis.
"One victim-I mean camper," Chris continued with a sly look, "will snag the skis in an old-school diving suit," he held up the Rats' suit, "and float them to the surface while the rest of their team pumps them oxygen," he held up the Maggots' pump. "First team to surface their skis wins, and gets an advantage in part two."
\
The focus moved to the Maggots, Molly standing before her teammates and holding the diving suit's helmet. "Listen up Maggots. I'm diving."
"No problem with me," DJ agreed. "I'm not good with water, so I'll pump the air."
"Just consider it my way of making it up to you for the ice challenge," Molly said before feeling her pockets, only to realize something. "Who took my mp3 player?"
Confessional: DJ
"When I was eight, my brothers dared me to jump off the high-dive platform at the pool. I jumped, but I landed on my butt, and my trunks went so far up my butt, I had to go to the hospital and get them removed. They invited a new word for what I did. The wedgie flop. I've been afraid of water ever since," DJ explained his fear of water.
Confessional Ends
The focus moved to the Rats, Geoff at the center of their attention. "So who's gonna pump and who's gonna dive?"
"I got captured first last episode, so I'll pump the air just to show that I'm not useless," Sammy went to the hose.
"Sierra, you just came back, so you can dive in order to prove yourself to us," Scott suggested.
"Of course I'll dive," Sierra said. "I'm a certified swimmer."
Confessional: Scott
"That was much easier than I thought it'd be," Scott quipped.
Confessional Ends
"Ready?" Chris asked, now standing between Molly and Sierra, the two now fully dressed in their diving suits. Molly smirked confidently at her opponent, with Sierra doing the same, and with a sharp "GO!" from the host, the two were off.
The shot immediately cut underwater as the two splashed down and sank to the lake bed. The perspective moved behind them as they looked ahead to the tied-up skis in the distance, and after sharing a brief glance the two raced off...rather slowly through the water, thanks to the heavy suits and water pressure. The camera focused on Sierra as she suddenly stopped as though her hose had been caught on something.
She looked back and the camera panned to follow, revealing Fang holding back the uberfan's hose with a single hand. He grinned toothily, and Sierra screamed.
The scene moved back above the water, focusing on the Rats. Sammy was currently pumping with Leshawna and Scott watching her, and Geoff and Trent were leaning off the edge of the dock to watch Sierra's progress.
"Tired already, Pom-pom?" Scott asked the cheerleading girl as her breathing became heavier.
Leshawna took Sammy off the pump. "It's okay," the sista said. "I can do it for you!" She pumped so furiously that the hose started bulging as air pockets moved down it.
The scene cut back to Fang swimming viciously at Sierra; the girl turned around and screamed just as the bulging air pocket moved through the hose towards her...blowing up her suit like a balloon, causing Fang to ram into her and bounce off.
"You better get those skis, girl!" Anne Maria shouted near Scarlett as the camera cut back above the water.
"Yeah, keep up the pace," Dave added halfheartedly while kneeling on the dock.
The camera panned away from them and on to Katie and DJ, the latter operating the pump while the former talked to him...absentmindedly standing on the hose while doing so.
"Nice muscles you got on," Katie told DJ sincerely.
"Can I ask you something?" DJ said.
"Sure," Katie replied, looking up at her teammate. "What do you want to ask me?"
"What's your favorite kind of food?" DJ asked Katie. "Mine is gumbo, especially when made by my Momma."
"I like bacon. You can put it on any food you want, and they've been useful for my vlogs," Katie said.
"Bacon wouldn't go great with gumbo if you're thinking about that," DJ joked with the sweet girl.
"I know that. I'm not off the wall," Katie laughed at his sentence. As she spoke, the camera focused down on the slowly-growing bulge in the hose, trapped from moving onward by Katie's weight.
Confessional: Katie
"DJ is such an attractive guy," Katie swooned. "Is this what having a real life crush is like?"
Confessional Ends
The shot cut back underwater, Molly eagerly approaching the water skis...until she suddenly gasped, stopped, and held her breath with a look of shock. She frantically started tugging on her hose, and the scene returned to the edge of the dock as the other end of the hose began to yank and twang.
Scarlett quickly noticed it, and moved her wide gaze up the hose to Katie's feet. "What are you doing standing on the hose?" she asked sternly while pulling Katie off. "You're blocking the air." The air pocket finally rushed down to the hose.
Back underwater Molly's face had started to lose a bit of color as she kept on tugging at the hose. The air bubble finally reached her, and she let out a sigh of relief.
Back up shore, Katie started to feel really guilty. "I'm so sorry about that. I didn't know."
Confessional: Katie
"I almost killed Molly," Katie said in regret. "She's annoying sometimes, but that doesn't warrant murder."
Confessional Ends
The static cut away to the Rats, Leshawna continuing to pump air at a fast pace.
"This is taking forever!" Scott complained while holding his wood. "I gotta whittle something." He put his hand on his pocket. "Wait, where's my lucky shark tooth? Sierra must've stole it!" Scott thought out loud. "Like she stole Music Note's guitar and Indie Lady's mp3."
Anne Maria heard the commotion and came over. "Sierra couldn't steal a TV in a riot," she explained.
"Think about it. That girl's been obsessed with getting information about the show, even us," Scott replied.
Anne Maria proceeded to pat herself down. "As if, there's no proof that-" she retorted until something caught her attention. "Hey. Where's my hairbrush?" The jersey shore reject grew angry. "Oh, that is it! Sierra's getting a beat down!"
The scene flashed back underwater where Fang had gotten a hold of Sierra's air hose and was using her as a punching bag. The hose snapped from the unintended stress and the obsessive girl was sent flying through the water.
Sierra got to the Rats' skis first. Her diving suit knocked Molly down and smacked into the rock holding the skis, the force was enough to dislodge them; seconds later the two skis floated up to the surface.
A ship's horn was blown, and Chris called out "The Rats win the first challenge!" over the shot of Sierra flying out of the water between the skis with a scream.

"The Rats are the first to grab water skis," Chris announced over a shot of everyone assembled on the dock, "and their reward?" he said as a light-skinned female intern with a black ponytail drove a speedboat up to the Rats' side of the dock. "A McLean Brand Speedboat to use in part two of the challenge."
"Cool!" Trent cheered in excitement.
"Yeah baby!" Leshawna chimed in, the rest of their teammates smiling.
"And for the Maggots," Chris turned to the losers, a spluttering engine attracting their attention to the lake as well as the southeast Asian male intern drove up an inflatable boat to the left side of the dock. "A totally leaky dinghy!"
The six Maggots groaned and hung their heads in disappointment.
"This is almost too easy," Scott chuckled to himself before he saw Sierra catch up to the Rats with her diving suit torn up.
"Did we win the advantage?" Sierra told the farm boy.
"We sure did…stealer!" Scott muttered the last part under his breath.
"Part two of the challenge," Chris continued, briefly holding up two fingers as he continued his exposition, "a death-defying water ski race! The goal? Be the first to ring four bells on these four totally harmless buoys."
As he spoke, the shot cut first to one of the bells, then zoomed out to show it – and the others floating nearby – were attached to the top of what were very obviously sea mines. Brick arrived just then, the cadet frantically paddling his canoe up to one of the mines. He bumped into it just as Chris proclaimed its harmlessness, and the cameo and canoe were blown away by the resulting explosion.
Chris laughed. "Make that three bells," he corrected as a screaming Brick landed on the dock beside him. "See?" he told the slightly-charred young man. "You totally got to demo the challenge." The host then looked at the camera. "Who will cry for their mommy? And who's cries will be drowned out by explosions?" he asked with a wide smile. "Find out when we return." He looked down at Brick, who coughed out a little more soot.
