2023.05.30 17:23 Sniper_Brosef Guesses for May's lightning?
Sure, two days left but some notable performances:
Judge was wild but I don't know that they want to burn 99 Judge just yet in the game cycle. He has the highest wRC+ for May at 261, the highest wOBA at .546, the highest ISO at .543, as well as the highest OPS at 1.377. He'd be a great choice for this.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has the second highest OPS at 1.212 and I could definitely see it being him for the lightning if he's not a high 90s.
Freddie Freeman and Juan Soto were also above 1.1 OPS on the month but they do already have high 90s already in the WBC, and charisma, respectively.
Leody Taveras Led in batting average at .395 followed by Freeman, Gurriel, Riley Greene and Keirmaier.
For pitchers: Wacha and Eovaldi had ERA's under 1. Wacha also had an incredibly low WHIP at .72.
Any guesses on who might win out here? We have two days so still plenty of time for movement on this list.
Personally, I'm hoping Riley Greene gets a solid high 90s this month because go Tigers!

2023.05.30 05:16 CorruptedStudiosEnt I just had to help my partner get committed to a facility.
Just context, you can skip this long ass read. Tl;dr, everything was okay, for several years of varying stress levels, until it VERY suddenly wasn't. If you can, at least just skim the important bits and advise me on how the fuck to cope with this.
Everything was okay around a month ago. Our situation hasn't been good, but we were handling it and excited for a growth opportunity like we've never had.
She has PTSD, but she's always managed herself well, aside from a brief period years back where some impending doom set in while confronting some of her trauma. She sought out therapy, and even just by the end of her first session she was improving a ton. It wasn't long before she was back to her normal self, but even better for it.
Problem is, we've been under tremendous stress for around two years.
Our rescue macaw passed away from a viral wasting disease, and he was the closest thing we'd had to a child. We had him for most of our ten years together.
We had our (rental) home sold out from under us in the middle of a rental crisis. Basically the only option we had left was to move in with her family 2,400 miles away, onto their ranch. She couldn't continue therapy when we moved.
They were contributors to her childhood traumas, but she was so sure they'd changed and were ready to be the people she needed them to be many years ago.
I was extremely skeptical that the people who hadn't extended a finger to us, let alone a hand, through several years of struggling through a lot of hard shit, suddenly wanted to give us a near-free ride. But I think her sheer optimism for it just made me feel like I was being an awful cynic, so I just shoved it down and bought into her fantasy. For her sake, as I thought at the time. Maybe she was right, after all.
She was wrong, and it went about as well as you'd expect. Honestly probably a lot worse. Her grandmother and father are manipulative, narcissistic assholes, whether or not they realize that's what they are. They bait and switched on us hard, whether they meant to or not.
The picture that was painted was that we'd live in the spare trailer on their property and pay our portion of the taxes and the insurance, and obviously just do our share of stuff like yard work. Maybe occasionally helping out with some cows and fences.
We spent most of our savings to get there, and after a four and a half day U-Haul trip, they started moving us in.. to her grandmother's house. In a tiny spare room. For two (at the time) 26 year old adults, a dog, a cat, and a snake. We had to get a storage unit for the vast majority of our stuff, since we'd had nearly ten years of building a life together in the back of that truck.
That spare trailer stayed empty for the whole year and a half of us being there, by the way.
All the responsibilities were then handed off to us. We were expected to cook the meals for everyone, clean the house, do all the ranch work, fix anything that broke, etc.. Her father and grandmother just sat in bed, collected their retirement/inheritance/disability, and popped their pills.
Then on top of it, we were also expected to pay "half" of the bills, so we had to find employment on top of all the other full-time responsibilities.
We weren't allowed to see the bills, they would just tell us what we owed, but I'll tell you right now that I'd never in twelve years of being out on my own now, in comparably sized homes, paid $800 for a month of electricity. But allegedly the "half" we were expected to pay was $400.
My grandfather passed away, and I soft inherited my grandparents' property. My grandfather and I never had a good relationship, so it was a huge surprise. But with what little we'd managed to save up in that time, it got us off her family's ranch, and it also got us out of the vicious poverty inducing rent cycle, so it seemed like we'd finally gotten a massive break.
Then the housing problems set in.
I've replaced about half of the plumbing myself, because new stuff just kept breaking down all the time.
I wasn't confident doing a new gas water heater myself, so we had to get work to save up for a new one. Until that indeterminate future date, we had to boil water on the stove and shower with a pitcher out of a cooler. We took it in humor as best as we could.
Then our vehicles started breaking down, and became unreliable enough we couldn't leave the small town we're living in. Our savings at that point weren't nearly enough to get new vehicles, or even to get the level of work required done in a shop, and I didn't have the means to do that level of work.
She's been in healthcare (a very desperate field) for her whole working life, and is a fantastic worker, so she found work right away, four minutes from our house.
I sat on Google refreshing the job listing probably forty times per day, looking for anything even marginally close enough that the car could make it to, and I could plausibly continue to find a way to work even if it suddenly couldn't. I've done remote work before and would've been happy to go that route again.. except the best we get here is 7mbps internet, and I couldn't find a single fucking place that would accept that.
We're an equal home. Bills, large purchases that benefit both of us, food, housework, everything except stuff like the vehicle/house maintenance which she wasn't comfortable doing (though even that she was interested in learning). This was killing me to feel like I was leaching off of her, and I know it was really stressing her out being the only source of income.
Then set in the job problems. Put simply, she'd wound up in a very toxic work environment. To make matters worse, one of the people there is almost like a 40 year younger version of her grandmother, whom we'd just escaped.
My S.O. started to lose her identity there, just trying to mask and mirror her way through the social dynamics, which were more like a cliquey high school than a workplace. She felt her job depended on it. Gossip, cruelty, passive aggression, all completely out of character for her, but she felt like she didn't have a choice but to participate in it.
The manager also didn't want to do her own job, and given my S.O.'s glowing experience, resume, and letter of recommendation from her previous job, started putting the job of managing people on her..
But without the title, authority, or pay of a manager. So naturally, nobody gave a shit what she had to say. It still all fell down onto her anyway, and she was treated like shit every time her attempts to lead didn't go as they should've.
But she felt she couldn't leave, because the way she (understandably) saw it, our survival depended on it.
I did finally find work as lower management in a small casino in town, but she never lost that survival mode mindset, and had no interest in quitting despite all the stress it was putting on her.
How we landed here, per the title. This is where my heart breaks down completely. Mostly for her, but quite honestly, also for myself
About three weeks ago, she came home from work one day. She started her normal "today's bullshit at work" vent session, like we've always done for each other every day.. but this was different. First she seemed a bit disconnected, but it quickly devolved into extreme emotional reactions.
All of a sudden she starts talking about how everyone's behavior is changing around her. Suddenly the girls at work were chipper and kind. Everyone was doing their job correctly. She became convinced there was some kind of investigation for a hostile work environment or something happening, and that was causing the change.
It didn't seem totally out of the realm of possibility, especially because they'd just finished berating a transgender coworker out of there. And my S.O. has always been pretty sound of mind (albeit occasionally a little prone to unlikely fantasies of optimism, but I personally love that about her despite what it had just resulted in with her family). I agreed that it did sound like a possibility.
Pretty quick, she started getting squinty-eyed, told me my behavior has been changing too, and started asking me what I knew about the investigation. Caught me completely off guard, and I guess she saw that in my body language, but misread it as me trying to hide something.
She asked me what I was hiding, and at this point I was just massively confused how this went from a normal vent session about work, like we've had for ten years, to an interrogation.
Before I could answer, suddenly she jumps to angrily asking if I'm cheating on her, a look of almost intense hatred in her widened eyes.
Every question just confusing me more in terms of where she's getting any of this from. We have great communication, loyalty, honesty, trust, the whole package. I had no idea what was happening.
She ran to the bedroom and started packing to leave, and I was begging her to slow down and stop so I could catch up on what the fuck was happening. She told me I was in on the investigation but wouldn't tell her anything, and I was cheating on her with one of her coworkers (who has a loose link to my boss at the casino.. small town shit), and that's all she needed to know.
It finally clicked for me that this was some kind of stress breakdown, and I suggested as much. She finally slowed down and thought about it. Suddenly she's calling her sister, who lives in a completely different state a thousand plus miles away, surrounded by ocean. "Do you know anything about an investigation? Have any of the girls from my work contacted you?"
Her sister was also caught off guard, but honestly responded much better than I did, and I'll always feel like my uncoordinated response did damage here. Maybe because they share a lot of the same traumatic experiences, and the diagnosis, so she understood what was happening much more quickly? I'm not sure.
My S.O. backed down, had a good long cry while we cuddled, and it seemed like that was it. She understood that it was some kind of mental snap, and her grip on reality had basically fully returned. She said she didn't think she could go back to work there, and I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agreed after what I'd just witnessed. WHOLE. FUCKING. HEARTEDLY. Scared the shit out of me, but after hours of it, I was just glad it was over.
The next day, "I just wish someone would be honest with me. There is FACTUALLY an investigation happening, you all know something about it, and I know you're cheating on me. I need to just get away from everyone." Cue an hours long conversation trying to talk her down again, but this time on my own, because she'd decided her sister "wasn't in the loop enough to see what was going on anyway."
It went on like this for about three weeks. Off and on. All day. All night. Moment of clarity, back down the rabbit hole 30 minutes later. Moment of clarity, back down the rabbit hole.
She started making all these "seeing god in the stars" types of connections. Suddenly everyone on Facebook knew something she didn't now too, evidenced by how these posts they're sharing relate back to it. My family was also allegedly talking about her mental breakdown on Facebook, which meant that I'd told them everything about it and taken away her choice to control that information.
Neither of us were sleeping, eating, drinking, basically neglecting all forms of self care to sit there and hash, rehash, and rehash this out again. I'd guess I was averaging 5 hours of sleep per week, right alongside her, while still having to go to work and pretend everything was fine.
I tried to suggest returning to therapy god knows how many times, or even something in-patient since this was SO much worse than her last episode years back, but initially she was convinced this was me trying to manipulate her. Gaslight her. Convince her she's crazy.
I tried to get her to just think it through, like what evidence does she actually have for any of it beyond her gut feeling? The evidence doesn't exist because we're all smart enough to get rid of it and keep it from her. She just kept repeating that she trusts her body, and that's all she needed.
During one of her moments of clarity, she finally booked a therapy appointment.. but unfortunately not through her old therapist, who had been fantastic with her. She no longer lives here. Instead, she went through that BetterHelp app.
Her first appointment, she starts going into the stuff she needs to get working through, and in response she gets, "Holy smokes!" Yeah. That's it. Holy smokes. To be clear here, this is evidently not a platform for people in crisis, this is a platform for people whose dad yelled at them that one time and it makes them sad to think about, because these people are clearly not equipped for anything more serious than that. What kind of fucking psychology professional responds like that?
Anyway, the therapist also went on to say about the job situation, "I would've quit too." Now, this seems innocent enough when you're dealing with someone who's with it, but my S.O.'s currently fractured mind took that as validation for everything, not just the general toxicity of the work environment like the therapist was speaking to. Again, a psychology professional should've known better. And it was back on full force for a while.
A massive divergence happened a few days after this. I'm not even sure how or why. We had our usual rehashing session, and suddenly.. she just accepted it. She accepted that she's in perpetual fight or flight mode right now, and her mind is looking for any explanation to grasp at, any possible danger imaginable. She just had to trust us, the people who've loved and supported her all along and have no reason to betray her, and keep with the therapy.
For three or four days, she was totally with it. I mean, almost fully back to normal. All apologies for what she put us through, all forgiveness and "just happy to have you back" from us. Then on the final night, she sees that my step mother is Facebook friends with one of her coworkers. And we're back on.
Fast forward to the past few days, and she's become very despondent about the way she's feeling. She's fairly consistently aware that something is happening to her internally, rather than externally with everyone else, basically just seeking regular reassurances that we're being as honest as possible about everything. But her fight or flight just.. Will. Not. Disengage.
We had a conversation about trying another therapist, and she agreed, but she still didn't feel she needed in-patient care. She booked an in person session with one who specializes in behavioral health and trauma.
Then she starts experiencing distortions in her perception. Shadows when she closes her eyes. Rooms appearing smaller than they should. The voice track on TV shows not appearing to line up with actors' lip movements. Just little distortions, but they scared the absolute living shit out of her.
That fear led to some horrific dissociation, where it's like she's losing context on everything. She doesn't know what's happening and feels like nothing is real anymore. Nothing makes sense.
She was still stuck on there being an investigation, but it was evolving. It wasn't her old job being investigated anymore, it was her father for child abuse from when she was young. Then it was us for neglecting our pets (because we don't take our snake out very often and occasionally forget a regular nail trimming for the dog, but they're otherwise very well cared for). Then it was her father again, but for elder abuse, because her grandmother (who insists on managing her own medications) accidentally overdosed one day.
She became even more despondent, frequently breaking out into panic attacks and crying fits, which I just continued to try and help her through. Ice packs, reassurances that she was safe, there was no threat, etc. Truth be told, I was terrified too.
Finally, two days before her appointment, she had a massive panic attack about it being Memorial Day weekend. She couldn't explain why, just that it didn't make sense. She finally says she thinks she needs a hospital, which she's been completely opposed to until this point.
I rushed her to the emergency room, and that was a mess because it was the middle of the night so they couldn't find a bed anywhere in a more appropriate facility that late. They didn't really have any mental health resources themselves, so all they could do was give her some medications to calm her nerves and help her sleep through the night until they could find a bed.
The hospital.. was not good for her either. After a while, she just kept begging me to take her home. She just wanted to sleep together in our own bed, but they'd decided that between the bouts of confusion, paranoia, and admitting that she has had thoughts of suicide in the past, she was a danger to herself and couldn't leave.
They took her phone, leaving her in a blank room, and thanks to her work and the fact the most recent retraumatizing came from a healthcare environment, constantly triggered by the sounds of call lights and such in the emergency room outside.
All I could do was hold her, and keep reminding her that she's safe, and that everyone there just wants to help, but they're just limited in the ways they can until they find a bed somewhere. She just kept repeating that she wasn't actually getting any treatment, and to be fair she basically wasn't, but I just had to keep asking her to hold out a little longer, because they were trying to find her a facility that had the ability to.
They did finally, this morning, but it was about 130 miles away. They let me take her there myself though, which was a huge plus to know we'd get that last bit of time together.
On the way, however, she starts telling me how horrible of a person she is. At one point, she asks if I'm taking her to prison. I asked her what she could possibly go to prison for, and she just says incredibly minor things from the past like downloading a movie, (very rarely) doing this or that drug, etc.
I just kept reassuring her that I'm taking her to a crisis center where they'll be able to help her figure out where this is coming from, and that in no way is she in trouble legally. Everyone involved in this just wants to help her.
It's at this point I realize.. they took her phone. All these little connections she was making via Facebook and such, suddenly unavailable. She'd also decided once and for all that I wasn't the problem. So now all she had left was herself. She was being held at the hospital against her will. The "investigation" was no longer into her work, it was into her, because that's all that was left.
She tells me she's going to go away (to prison) for a long time, but to just know how much she loves me. She wishes we could've just had a simple life together, but she ruined that for us. She was just so sorry. I just kept reassuring her that nothing was ruined, and we can and will still work towards that life together, she just needs help that's beyond what I can provide so we can get back to that.
Then finally, after a long goodbye.. I dropped her off.
The facility is very small (literally a regular house in a regular neighborhood, so only a few patients getting a lot of 1x1 care), and very soft spoken and compassionate staff. Practically everything is optional right down to the daily therapy, which made me really happy to hear given it seems like that should ease her mind on the prison train of thought. She's even allowed to leave for good whenever she wants, with the one caveat being that I or a family member would need to pick her up.
It doesn't have visiting hours though, and I couldn't even go in with her.. that kills me. They don't have HIPAA forms, so just walking through the door is a violation. But she gets to keep her phone at all times with the exception of bedtime, just to make sure she gets some sleep. She told me a bit ago that she's nervous coming into this new environment, but everyone there has been nothing but incredibly welcoming and empathetic towards her.
Not to make this situation about me, because it's so far from it, but my heart is just so broken.
I've never felt anything so horrible. Not even remotely close. I feel like I, myself, need therapy after this.
I'm still so confused. Did I just miss the cracks of this coming on? Or was it really that sudden? I swear I would've noticed her behavior change.
I'm so angry with her toxic fucking coworkers, who it seems like ultimately sent her into this downward spiral. I'm so angry with her family for being.. well, who they are.
I'm so angry with myself for not trying harder to get her to leave that job sooner, just because I didn't want to press the issue since she's her own person and capable of making her own decisions. But I saw the stress it was putting on her. I should've done more.
I'm so scared of what comes next. Will she ever normalize out and heal? If so, when? Days? Weeks? Months? How is this experience going to change her? Admittedly, given we live in the US, how in the fuck are we going to afford this (though as long as she's getting the help she needs, that's far from my primary concern, but still something I have to figure out)?
It feels like my whole world came crashing down around me. She is my person. She's one of the biggest reasons I get out of bed in the morning. My favorite parts of the day are crawling into bed together and waking up to each other, like we've been doing for ten fucking years.
Her absence in our home is utterly suffocating, knowing the hell she's going through while there's practically nothing I can do for her except be there for her when she wants to text or talk on the phone.
I doubt anyone is going to read this whole book I've written here, but just being able to type it all out sequentially like this has been a bit cathartic. But I still just have no idea how to feel. What to do. I'm so lost.

2023.05.29 20:32 CripplingAnxiety94 Early 2023 Dbacks All-star predictions
I think we’re playing well enough this year to avoid the “Well SOMEBODY has to represent the team” situation we had last year with Joe Mantiply. Just off the top of my head, there are three guys I feel should get an all-star nod, at least in the early goings, and I'd like to see who other fans think is deserving or not deserving:
- Zac Gallen- I think this is the most obvious. A true ace and arguably the best pitcher in the NL. If we only have one representative again this year, it’s going to be him.
- Lordes Gurriel Jr- One of the hottest hitters in the NL, and our best hitter right now. I don’t think he’ll get a starting nod, but he should be a reserve.
- Merrill Kelly- Poor Merrill might be destined for a “Greatest pitchers to never be an all-star” list sometime in 20 years. He’s so good, but so underappreciated with all the megastar pitchers in the National League. The way he’s pitching this year though, he absolutely deserves an all star nod. He’s one of the most valuable guys on our team, and if there was any year from him to be at the All-Star game, it’s this one.
Am I missing anyone? Or am I being too optimistic?

2023.05.29 13:55 avy_sionnach All Star Game Rosters if decided by fWAR: May 29, 2023
- Bolded players are new to this week's post. Italicized players are those who have been selected due to the rule that each team must have at least one representative.
- I use fWAR for position players, but use RA9-WAR rather than fWAR for pitchers. Neither is a perfect statistic, but when I used fWAR before, it'd lead to things like, for example, 2019 Chris Sale being listed as one of the top pitchers in the league that season for a while, and I feel that RA9-WAR is a bit closer to how All-Star Game rosters are typically selected.
- For DHs, I go by offensive value (Off) on Fangraphs leaderboards.
- When a player is listed on Fangraphs leaderboards at more than one position, they are placed at the position where they have played most often.
- Occasionally, a player can appear to be tied with another player by fWAR; this is because Fangraphs rounds WAR values to the nearest tenth in leaderboards. The player listed higher on the leaderboards has the higher unrounded WAR value.

2023.05.29 07:45 icecoldcoke319 Created player bugged in DD
Started as a 2 way player then converted to hitting only. Told the coach I wanted to go back to 2 way again and now my CAP is totally bugged in Diamond Dynasty. His secondary positions at catcher and infield always shows him out of position. Even though he shows as a starting pitcher and has those positions listed in the secondaries. He also doesn't show up as an option to put into the starting rotation. Loading into the game, if I select him as a SP from the list, he gets the DH position along with my actual DH, so two DHs. His turn at bat says he is "0" in the batting rotation. Playing him at catcher he has out of position fielding such as dropping balls, having no blocking stats, etc even though when you view his stats in-game, he has 84 field, 82 arm, 70 acc, and 81 reaction (his normal fielding stats). I cannot get the coach in RTTS to ask me about switching to batting only as well as started a new RTTS with the same CAP and didn't get the prompt either. How do I fix this?

With our sub close to 100k and more and more faces joining GDT and PGT daily we should compile a list of meanings behind our antics in a single place. We used to have the subreddit FAQ, but that has long since been removed. Go ahead and add/explain something we do that others might find interesting.
first, each starting pitcher and some relievers have their own emoji to signify a K.

2023.05.28 00:25 PhesteringSoars [SF] Paige & Caroline (3,622 Words; 20,273 Characters)
“Now Paige, you’re sure there isn’t anything for me to sign?”, my mother asked.
“No mom. It’s ‘Bring your sibling to work day’. Caroline is 10 and old enough for the summer training, even though she can’t officially serve as an Imperial Page for two more years.”, I reply.
At 14 myself, I’ve been an Imperial Page for 2 years now. “I did the summer training.”, a month each, for two summers starting at 10, “I wanted to see if she might be interested serving as well.”
“I just don’t want her getting in someone important’s way.”, mother continues.
“She’ll be fine. The shuttle flights in/out off-world will be the most exciting part. ‘Court’ is currently in session on Tau Ceti 9a, with the Emperor himself at one of the orbital Space Stations. He’s overseeing rescue, recovery, and restoration operations dealing with the aftermath of the two recent super-typhoons on the planet. We’ll mostly be delivering snacks & meals and hand delivering documents and supplies all day. Routine stuff.”
“I just don’t want her to do something to upset the Emperor.”, mother said.
I reply, “He’s trying to help people in distress mom. People left with next to nothing. He’s just a man.”
Mother shakes her head and mumbles, “I worry about that too.”
I snort, “He wouldn’t do anything to us and the Sezrakeen (the Imperial Guard) wouldn’t allow it anyway.”
I remember something they told us in training . . . “Even if you see the Emperor in a room, seemingly by himself, two of the Sezrakeen are always there. Though they can be invisible, and you may not see them. One to protect him from evil in the world and one to protect the world from any evil in him.” No one in the Imperial Court has treated me badly.
Mother finally relents, cleans up after breakfast, and sees us off. We catch the community transit to the city-center, then on to Lacross Spaceport. One shuttle to the regional military base, then a shuttle combining many groups to go to / from wherever Court is in session at the current time.
With 7,645 inhabited worlds in the known multiverse, “Imperial Court” moves around every few months trying to spread the attention around. Currently there are 74 regional centers large enough to house the staff of the traveling court. 17 of which could be classified as “Palaces”. (Including “The Winter Palace” the Emperor built by himself, by hand on Beatrice Nine. It’s beautiful and one of my favorites to visit and serve in, though knowing he was abandoned alone on the planet for almost 40,000 years, time enough to build the central structures by himself . . . sort of brings a melancholy air to the place.)
Caroline and I arrive at R44 (the closest Regional Center), and I take her to Security while we wait for the morning shuttle. I scan my left forearm under the ID scanner. You can wear a ring, bracelet, pendent, or carry a card or pen-sized wand for ID . . . But I opted for the radial (bone) implant. It’s much harder to forget and leave your left arm at home. And since it registers body heat and blood flow, it can’t practically be taken from you and used by someone else. (I did “neglect” to tell my parents I opted for the implant 18 months ago.)
Caroline gets her biometrics recorded. (Photographs, walking gait, finger-hand prints. Reads a sample text for voice capture and a pinprick for DNA.) She opts for a subtle ring ID and asks me, “Why does it look like I’m the only sister or brother here?”
I respond, “It’s only you today. I just wanted you to see what a day was like in the Imperial Court.”
“What do you mean ‘only you’? Is it really ‘Bring your sibling to work day?’”
“As far as I know there is no such thing. I just wanted you to come and see the Emperor and the Court.”
“You’re just bringing someone to see the Emperor of the Known Multiverse and the Imperial Court? Who approved it?”
“I did.”
“You can do that?”
“An Imperial Page can do what they need to.”, I say as we finish her setup. Most of the biographical info (date of birth, relatives, placed lived) I entered to her personnel record weeks ago. I scan my ID and vouch for her to match the biometrics to the central data personnel record.
“Let’s go, the Shuttle will be ready for boarding about the time we get there.”, I put my left arm around Caroline’s shoulders and nudge her in the right direction.
Feeling the tenseness in her shoulders I ask, “Are you worried?”
“A little bit.”, she says with a bit shaky voice.
“Don’t. Just keep your ears open. Follow me and help me whatever I’m doing. Unless someone there directly addresses you, try not to interfere. You’ll hear things meant to be kept private. Try and let it flow in one ear and out the other without thinking about it or remembering it. Normally its boring procedural matters running the Empire. But for the past few weeks at this odd location there has been a lot of ‘sad news’ from the deaths, injuries, from the storms. It’s been turning around a bit. Back to more rebuilding hospitals, schools, city halls, and some factories. You can whisper me questions but try not to bother the others there. You’ll do fine.”
The morning shuttle we are on (of 6 per day cycling in/out wherever court is) arrives and docks with the station. The contents depart and scan past security checkpoints. Caroline her ring and me my forearm. Which leaves Caroline with a perplexed look. (I didn’t explain yet that the implant was an option, and she sees no ring on my hand.)
I lead Caroline past stationed guards, secretaries and administrators, dignitaries, and court personnel to one of the inner facility rooms. One of the court cooks sees me, points to a cart loaded with coffee and tea Thermos’s, water pitchers, cups, and an assortment of donuts, sweets, ‘breakfast things’, and says “Conference L2 Room 6a.”
I begin pushing the cart to the Lift for Level 2, room 6a. Caroline stays almost glued to my left hip. She’s being inordinately quiet. But then I remember what it was like for myself, only a few years ago.
More guards at the conference room recognize me and one holds the door as I push the cart in. One points at Caroline. I simply say, “Sister.” The guard nods.
Caroline and I spend the next 10 minutes distributing drinks and retrieving used cups/plates, and occasionally pulling my sister gently along by her arm. With over 7,000 inhabited planets and an average population of 2 billion, a good 80% of the 14 trillion in the known multiverse have seen images/video of the Emperor. But it’s quite another thing to pass by him close enough to touch for the first time. Not to mention Admirals, Generals, and dignitaries of all sorts around the conference table and outer ring chairs many with a dizzying array of medals, epaulets, and such.
She hands me things as I place them on the table. (So, if she spills anything, it’ll only get me, not a General) and I place them on the table.
I half listen as Admiral Burns shows video on the large screen at the end of the room and describes the current situation on the planet below.
“. . . Rescue operations have officially completed everywhere. Recovery (of human/animal remains) and final demolition of dangerous structures continue in the Rangor and Balok districts.
Next, I’ll go over how we plan to deploy Military-Imperial construction teams to begin assisting with infrastructure repair and restoration . . .”, as the Admiral’s aide works on a laptop on the conference table to bring up the next presentation.
An imperial aide I recognized pops their head in the end door and says, “Sire, message on F23.” The emperor says, “One second Admiral.”, and taps some keys on a tablet at his right hand.
The presentation clears on the end video screen and a woman dressed in what I’ll say is a doctor's white cloak appears on screen. Momentarily fazed upon seeing the Emperor himself, she stutters, “I uhh,”
The Emperor said, “Its fine Doctor. How can we help you?”
The woman tries to continue, “I, uhh. I’m sorry, I . . .”, closing her eyes for a second and opening, “I’m Doctor Akins on Brandenburg 2, Jellico City Memorial Hospital. I have a patient, Angela Graham. I’m afraid she’s had a heart attack and at her age of 97, I fear she won’t last more than a day or two, despite our best efforts. Her son a . . .”, looking down at a tablet she was holding, “. . . Captain Angus Graham was listed as family-emergency contact with instructions to call the Regional Base and explain any issues. I vid-called and two people later and I’ve somehow ended up with you.”, she adds hesitantly, “Sire”, not quite sure the proper form of address for the Emperor.
The Emperor responded, “He’s on station here with his Star Carrier the Perecles so they bounced you through to us. I’ll find him and let him know to go home. Thank you, Doctor Akins.”
The Doctor nods and the screen returns to the aide’s presentation slide.
Caroline and I had been clearing coffee cups and snack dishes from afternoon tea away from the conference table and were pushing the tray to the door to leave when the Emperor held up a hand towards us.
The Emperor asked aloud “Donna? (The computers name) Locate Captain Angus Graham”.
Donna: “Captain Angus Graham has just entered the Officers Lounge on Deck 23, at Bulkhead 41.”
The Emperor hand wrote a note on a sheet of paper, folded it in half, looked my way and said “Paige”.
Paige was an inconvenient name to have in my position, I was never quite sure if he knew my name and was saying Paige or just Page.
“You heard the location?”, the Emperor asked
Paige, “Yes sire.”
“Directly to Gus.”, the Emperor said, handing me the folded note.
I nodded.
Pushing the tray on through the door, I saw another page standing nearby and said, “Please.”, pointing to the tray and nodding to the closest kitchen. Thomas nodded and began pushing the tray in that direction.
We, Caroline and I, headed for the nearest Lift. (The multi-axis elevators that span the height and breadth of the station.) And I spoke tilting my head up a bit, “Deck 23, closest Bulkhead 41.”
“Deck 23, Bulkhead 42.”, the Lift responded.
The station bulkheads are about 50ft apart, so not that far to walk.
I opened the folded note and read it silently.
Caroline, still at my side and mostly silent since a flurry of questions when we stopped to have lunch, finally spoke inside the Lift, “Can you read the note?”
I responded, “An Imperial Page can do what they need to.”
We reached the Lift destination. I spoke to a nearby common terminal and said “Officers Lounge Deck 23, Bulkhead 41.”.
The terminal responded back, “The Mango Room. Light Blue”, simultaneously a Light Blue courtesy light appeared on the wall-track and began moving at a walking pace to the right.
Caroline and I followed the dot as it matched pace to lead us.
We reached The Mango Room double doors.
I tried the door handle but while it turned, the door didn’t unlatch. I tapped the “knock” button on the rightmost door.
A few seconds later a man about 40, with slicked back black hair and a pencil thin mustache appeared on the screen above the knock button. Seeing me, he only said, “Beat it kid. This is the Officers Lounge.”, and the screen went blank again.
I pressed the button again.
This time when he appeared, I spoke before the man could, “I am an Imperial Page with a message to be hand delivered to Captain Graham. I believe him to be inside.”
“I don’t give a fuck who you are ‘Little Girl’. Children aren’t allowed in here to bother the patrons. Get lost.”, the man sneers and clicks off again.
I turn and retrace steps to the Lift, Caroline following.
I tell the Lift, “Armory”.
Scanning arm ID at the doorway, we enter and I approach the wire cage behind which stands a man I have never seen before. I fill out a “request form” on the tablet nearby, tap it to and scan my ID to the nearby sensor.
The man looks at the list popping up on the screen on his side of the cage, “A bit young, aren’t you? Why don’t you try back in a couple years.”, snickering and turning back to his desk behind him.
Back out the Armory door, to the Lift and back to the conference room with the Emperor.
I enter, holding one palm back, indicating for Caroline to stay in the doorway of the room.
Saying nothing to anyone, I walked around to the left of the Emperor and pulled the Imperial Signet off the little finger of the Emperor’s left hand and placing it onto my right index finger, while he continued to ask questions about Engineering Group deployments on the planet below.
Outside the conference room, I pointed my index/middle finger in the direction of two Imperial Marine Guards on the distant side of the room, in self-contained fully body armor then motioned with a cupping hand a ‘follow me’ hand signal.
Four of us in the Lift this time.
Back at the armory. I held my right hand up in a fist, index finger with signet facing the clerk, then swept the signet over the ID reader and entered the Emperor’s personal 18 character passcode.
The display lit up on the clerk’s side of the cage . . .
Things moved much faster this time.
The Armory attendants fitted us both with PDS’s (Personal Defense Shields), I pointed at Caroline and said “Openers”.
One Armory tech clipped two breaching charges on Caroline's belt, as I reached for the thermal viewers and mid-sized carbine the other tech held.
Facing the two Marines that had accompanied us, I waved my left hand in their direction and said, “Released.” They turned and left.
The tech previously holding the carbine asked, “You know . . .”
I turned the side of the weapon towards him and said, “Kill/Stun”, clicking that lever to Stun pointed at a 2nd switch “Rate of Fire, Single, 3 shot burst, Full Auto”, and pointing to the last, “Power Setting”.
I turned to leave with Caroline in perpetual tow.
Caroline asked, “A gun?”
I responded, “The Power settings for Stun go from level 1 to 5. One would sting. Two feels like a dozen angry bees stung you with the pain fading over the next hour. Three might knock out a child. Four would definitely knock out ANY ordinary man/woman, unconscious for an hour or so. Five would stop a charging elephant and bring it to the ground for three or four hours.”
I click the carbine settings to Level Two . . . Full Auto.
Back at “The Mango Room” doors, I swatted Caroline with the back of my hand to see our PDS fields light up and confirm it on like mine, flipped down the thermal viewer over my eyes and look to see if anyone is standing directly behind the doors.
“Take one of the breaching pucks off your belt.”, holding my hand up as if I was carrying one on my fingertips, “Set the dial on the side to 2.”
I look down the hallways to the left and right. No one on the left. I hold up one flat palm and stop a group to the right in their tracks about 20 yards away.
Speaking to Caroline again, mimicking the motion I say, “Fling it towards the center-line between the two doors.”
She flings the puck, it self-orients to flat-on face the two doors.
A half inch from the doors it discharges. The central 90% of the doors vaporize and blow back past Caroline and me in a plume of smoke and wood-metal shards. Harmlessly skittering off and around our PDS’s.
Mustache man steps out from beside the doors and seeing me begins to approach. I aim the carbine at him and hold the trigger down moving the impact point around his body.
They shoot you once during page training at settings two and three. A single shot at level two hurt worse than anything I’d felt to that point in my life for the next hour. A week later when they did Three . . . I was out for an hour.
I can’t imagine 2 seconds of Full Auto felt pleasant as mustache man crumpled to the floor.
Officers and Civilian Dignitaries around the room stood up from their tables upon seeing/hearing the door breach.
I took the opportunity to step up from one of their chairs to a nearby table, trying to dodge drink glasses.
Addressing the room with a firm voice, “I am an Imperial Page. With a message from the Emperor for Captain Angus Graham. Captain Graham present yourself.”
The crowd somewhat parted as a man in his late 60’s answered, “Here Miss.”
Stepping down from the table/chair, slinging the rifle, and approaching Captain Graham, I didn’t remove the note, but chose simply to speak directly to the Captain.
“Gus”, (the Captain understood it was the Emperor speaking), “Word just came through and it seemed better to deliver it in person. Your mother has suffered a heart attack and we fear her time is near. If your responsibilities allow it, take my shuttle and go home while you still can. Spend what time you need with her. I’m very sorry old friend.”
The Captain responded softly to me, “Thank you John.”
I stepped back and to the side, using my right hand to wave Caroline back out of the way.
Captain Graham passed through the crowd, presumably to gather personal items and head home.
I, with Caroline following, turned to follow Captain Graham out.
The “very angry” bouncer was just getting up on one hip, trying to push himself up on one hand and yelled through clenched teeth, “Why you little Bit. . . ”
He didn’t finish the sentence. I clicked the gun up to level 4, single shot, pushing him back 3 feet, and pinning him to the wall. Unconscious for at least a couple hours this time.
Caroline and I returned to the armory, dropping off the Carbine, Thermals, PDSs, and one un-expended breaching puck. Signing them back in. Logging one puck as “expended”, and 0.2% down on the carbine charge.
Back in the Lift to return to the conference room, I notice out the corner of my eye, a still silent Caroline, looks over and up at me with a thousand questions on her face.
I continued looking forward at the Lift doors and said, “An Imperial Page can do what they need to.”
I reentered the conference room, Caroline still in tow. Walked around the Emperor to his left, lifting his left hand and placing the signet back on his little finger and whispered, “Thank you John.”
As a video of reconstruction projections continued on the vid-screen at the end of the room, the Emperor nodded to me, understanding the message was from Gus and after I had crossed around behind him, looked to his right and said, “Thank you Paige.”, nodding to my sister, “Caroline.”
Caroline, her eyes as big as dinner plates, half bowed, half curtsied, and we left the conference room.
I looked over at Caroline, “It’s been a long day for you. We can just catch the next shuttle back to R44 and home if we leave now.”
Off the local transport, our parents were just stepping out of their personal car. Dad had two grocery bags in each hand, mother had two in one hand and was reaching for the last one in the open trunk-hatch.
“You survived!”, she said teasingly, looking our direction.
“Yes mother.”, I said.
“Did anything interesting happen?”, she asked.
“No mother. It was just another ordinary day. Passing out coffee, meals, and delivering notes.”, I replied
Caroline picked up the last of the grocery bags from the car while mother closed the hatch.
“How about you nibblet?”, Father asked, stopping to look at Caroline, “Were you bored to tears? Do you think you might like to be a Page in two more years when you’re old enough? You’d have to go through the training classes for the next two summers like your sister did.”
“Yes father. I think I’d like that.”, and lead the way into the house.
Caroline sets the grocery bag on the kitchen table and moves into the living room to sit down on the sofa. She faced the vid-screen and clicks it on. One of the weekly shows is on about one or another of the nation’s larger zoo’s. But she’s got that “glazed over” thousand yard stare . . . That I probably had after my first day after seeing the Imperial Court.
I wonder to myself if she’ll follow in my footsteps. Someone, from somewhere will need to replace me in about two years. In theory you can stay an entire career as a page. Some do.
But in two years I’ll be sixteen. And with four years’ experience as an Imperial Page, I can begin training for a range of other jobs in the Imperial administration.
“Combat Courier” sounds interesting.

2023.05.27 23:33 MediocreFisherman NC for less than a week. When does the anxiety go away? I just want to be left alone.
I have been no contact with my father since last Sunday.
This is going to e a long story. So...strap in, I guess?
In 2018 my father was living with my grandfather in an apartment. My grandfather had finally gotten to a point with his age (90) and health (bad) that he couldn't be left alone while my dad worked. He had fallen a few times, and wasn't really capable of making his own lunch or breakfast. So the family made the decision to move my grandfather into an assisted living facility.
My father had originally planned to move in with a friend of his. She had a spare bedroom she was going to rent him. Well, not long before this all set to happen, she backs out and says that she thinks he is too messy, and doesn't want to deal with him. Man...if I would have just listened then.
I had just bought a 12'x28' building from a friend. He had built it as an addition on his house, however decided to move and was open to selling the addition. We literally sawzalled it off his house, and had a roll on tow truck come haul it a few miles to my house where I had it put on a slab. I was planning on turning it into like a man cave / home office type thing since I work from home a lot.
Well, given the situation with my father, and that he couldn't afford to live alone on his $13 an hour job, I said hey, we work close to each other. Why don't I turn this building into a mini-house and you can live there and we can ride to work together. We agree to a very low rent amount, with the agreement being he will help out around the house, watch our kids occasionally, that sort of thing.
First few months of him living with us went fine. He was respectful, helpful, my only complaint was he'd chain smoke in my car on the way to and from work and I hated going to work smelling like smoke.
Then COVID hit. He worked at a pharma company doing packaging, and was laid off. A week after he was laid off he said a friend of his from work was going to come by and hang out. Well, turns out that friend was a woman, and very very quickly it turned into a relationship. And then soon after that we realized...he basically thought it was ok for her to live with us. I explained to him many times over that I had turned that building to a home for him, and just him. There was not room for a 2nd person, and with his extremely low rent, I wasn't paying for a 2nd persons utilities. But worse, she was a non-functional alcoholic. She drank and drank and drank, non stop. She would drive drunk. She would basically drink until she passed out, wake up and wash, rinse, repeat. That is literally all she did. She refused to interact with the rest of the family at all. She wouldn't even look at us. She was a grifter, she was just looking for a free place to live and drink. She didn't eat. I never once saw her eat.
We went on vacation summer of 2020, and my dad came with us. She stayed in his tiny home while he was gone, to watch our dogs and keep an eye on the place. Well, a massive limb fell out of the one tree in my backyard and crushed about 20 feet of my fence, RIGHT NEXT to the tiny home. She didn't notice. My neighbors called me and let me know. My dad called her and she was oblivious, and even pretended to go outside and check, and said she saw nothing. About 2 cords of wood fell out of the sky 20 feet from where she had been sleeping and crushed my chainlink fence. Then, when we came home, I check my security cameras. She only had been letting our dogs out once a day. We had to basically re-house train our dogs because they'd spent 10 days shitting in the house because she wasn't doing the one job she was supposed to do and that I was paying her $250 to do. Of course my dad defended her and said she'd done everything asked, he couldn't explain why she didn't notice the massive limb down. Just excuses.
Halloween 2020, she finally comes out of the tiny house and agrees to help pass out candy on our porch. She was extremely intoxicated. I mean drunk as hell, barely coherent. My wife and I were pissed that her and my father thought this was acceptable around our kids, or any kids. The next morning both claimed she hadn't had a drop to drink the previous day. They told me this at 9am, while she was drinking box wine out of a 20oz tumbler. Suffice to say, I didn't believe them.
At this point we finally started pushing very hard on him that she needed to leave. She was welcome to spend a night or two a week, but she wasn't moving in, and she needed to go home. This enraged my dad. He called me and my wife all sorts of horrible names, and then told me if I wanted her out, I had to tell her. Oh man, he had no idea how happy that made me. I marched right on out there and told her to pack her shit and be off my property in the next 5 minutes or I was calling the Sheriff and having her trespassed.
I go back in my house. 10 minutes later I get a text from him asking to talk. I go back out. He asks if she signs a lease, could she live here? I said what part of no to her moving in here did either of them not understand? We went back and forth more. Finally I said she was no longer welcome on my property, and she needed to leave. Now.
The next morning I get up, and guess who's car is back in my driveway? I went out, basically kicked his door open, and tore into the both of them and kicked her out again. He was testing me. He wanted to see how serious I really was.
Then the medical problems started. So the entire time we had been battling the girlfriend issue, he had an infection in his big toe. Finally, January 2021 he had to have it amputated, none of the antibiotics had worked. Then he had to have a 2nd surgery to remove more infection. Then he was on a wound vac for 2 months. Now, I understand how big of a pain in the ass the wound vac is, especially on your foot. So, I was more than helpful in this time-frame. I made him dinner and brought it out to his tiny house every night for him. I would run to the store whenever he needed. Just generally trying to be helpful to a guy laid up on bed rest.
And this is when things REALLY started, with him taking advantage of me. I would make him meals, and he would always have something nasty to say about it. He basically destroyed my love for cooking, because everything I made he would have something shitty to say. I made chicken fried rice and he bitched that it was dry. I explained that fried rice doesn't have a sauce, its not stir fry, its fried rice. "Well it was dry and it needed a sauce." But then, when I would bring his food out, he would be sitting at his TV tray with a knife and fork in his hands like waiting on me. But then always the nasty comments on my cooking.
And the running and getting him stuff went from once or twice a week, to daily. Or multiple times a day. I work from home, and would get texts from him demanding I go to the store. I'd say I'm in meetings, I can go after work. So he'd say shit like "I'm having a panic attack" or "I really need this stuff." And of course it was always stuff that could have waited a few hours like cigarettes and coffee.
THEN, one time he forgot something on the list, and asked me to go back for it. The dollar store is like half a mile from my house, so it really wasn't a huge deal. But after that....he started forgetting stuff almost every time. Because he liked making me have to go back out.
He also wanted me to bring him ice. So he was dealing with kidney failure, and was supposed to drink a lot of water to keep things flushing through. He wouldn't consider a tap filter, or like a brita pitcher. He demanded I buy him gallons of spring water and bring him ice from my ice maker. He wouldn't get ice cube trays because he said they were too big a pain in the butt.
One night, I was taking him out some ice, and I tripped in the dark and ended up tearing a huge flap of skin on my arm that caught on an exposed screw on the side of my house. 40 something stitches. He was pissed he didn't get his ice that night.
Things continue on this way. He had to get a heart cath and have antibiotics injected into his heart 2x a day. He refused a home health aid and said his son would do it. Never asked me. I'm not a doctor, and I was incredibly uncomfortable doing this, but he demanded I do it and refused to do it himself.
That summer (2021) I took my family to the beach. His kidneys had continued to shut down, and he was retaining water like crazy. He looked like the Michelin man. He was so swollen his penis wouldn't come out of his pubic fat area, so when he urinated, it just went everywhere. And because of the meds they had him on, he was peeing every 20 minutes. He was IRATE that I wouldn't bring him along. His "solution" to the pee problem was that he would shove a towel down his pants and pee into that, if he had to. His solution was to sit in the backseat of my fairly new car and piss himself, while sitting next to my daughters. He would berate me and scream at me and say all kinds of guilt ridden stuff at me about how doesn't he deserve to go to the beach one more time? And why would I take that away from him? That I owed this to him. And then finally that he was scared to be home by himself because of his health. But somehow...wasn't scared to travel 900 miles to Tampa? I almost broke, and my wife made it very clear that she did not want him on this trip, that it was a family trip for our family, and him being along was only ok if he was helpful, but spending the entire time being his nurse would not be a vacation. And of course she was right, and I am glad I finally listened.
We came home from vacation, and I spent 10 days without him. It was wonderful. And then we came home. And things continued down hill.
I don't know if you guys know what Kratom is, but its a drug from south east asia, its the ground up leaf of a plant. It hits the same receptors in your brain as opiates, but it doesn't get you high. Helps some people with pain. And he had restless leg syndrome, and became convinced this kratom stuff fixed it. He started taking it sometime around 2016. His dosage slowly ramped upwards. He wouldn't listen when I explained he needed to change things up, try different strains, and take tolerance breaks. He just took more and more and more.
Not only does kratom effect your kidneys, but it also can cause alzheimers like symptoms with chronic use. Recommended max dose is 15 grams, 3x a day. He is now up to around 2 kilograms a month. So, so do the math on that.
We tried to tell him many times that we were worried the kratom was impacting his health. His kidneys continued to fail and he ended up having to start dialysis. He also continued to be more and more demanding. He wouldn't ask you to do something, he'd just say "Go to family dollar and buy me some smokes." He basically treated me and my wife like rented mules. Just beat on us whenever he wanted.
He would put on these massive guilt trips about how he's all alone out in his tiny house by himself with no one to talk to. He would demand I come out every day and spend time with him, and when I'd say no, I have a wife and kids that need my time too, he would insult me, call me nasty shit or just flat out say he needed me more than them.
If you told him no, or tried to tell him how nasty he was being, he would do what I started calling the "(His Name) 3 step".
- Insult.
- State what he could no longer do, because of you
- Stomp away like a toddler.
So if you said "Dad, I don't want to take you out on the boat anymore, you are miserable to fish with, you treat me like shit the entire time, and its not enjoyable for me."
- FUCK YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT
- THAT WAS MY RETIREMENT PLAN, NOW I CANT GO FISHINg, WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?
- Stomp away.
It got to where I would start holding up my fingers and counting while he did his little act, and it would piss him off so badly.
Finally, I cracked. I couldn't take the abuse anymore. And I told him that he needed to find somewhere else to live. I wasn't kicking him out, I was going to help him find somewhere, but he needed to go, and if he didn't take my help, well he could go live in his car I guess.
We found him an apartment at a senior and disabled apartment complex. His rent was $100 cheaper than he had been paying me. Utilities were low. He was about a mile from our house, you could easily walk it on a nice day. Not only that, he had really nice neighbors. He instantly became friends with his neighbor, and they would go fishing together.
Things actually seemed like they were looking up. He even told me several times he was very thankful I had helped him find an apartment, he was enjoying being independent, and that he kind of had needed a push to go make some friends.
A few months ago, we started noticing he was talking about his neighbors less.
Then, a few weeks ago, he texts and asks me about buying a gun because "I guess I have to go fishing by myself now and I want protection."
Friday before last, he texted and asked me to come over. He was not in good shape. His other foot (not the toe missing one) was hurting very badly. He refused to go to the hospital, he said he was waiting until Saturday because the doctor that worked at the ER on the weekends gave out better meds.
Saturday afternoon, I drove past and saw the EMTs hauling him off on a stretcher.
About 10 minutes later, I get a facebook message from his neighbors girlfriend, and she asks me to call them. So I call, and then I say you know I'm 2 minutes away, let me just come over and we can talk.
We end up talking for close to 3 hours. They told me everything that had been going on. And frankly, I am disgusted.
He was stalking a home health aid that worked for the lady behind him, He learned her schedule and would stand in the hallway waiting for her and make nasty and lewd remarks. Apparently she had been cleaning his apartment for him as a side job, and he offered her $50 for sex. After that, she wouldn't talk to him or be near him, but he continues to try to approach her over and over.
He was sexually assaulting his neighbors girlfriend. He would grab at her, or pretend to trip and then grab her chest. Make horrible nasty comments to her. Wait for her boyfriend (his neighbor) to leave the room and say like "I don't know why you are dating him, and not me." or "He's a piece of shit, you should dump him and date me instead." and worse. I'm trying to be clean here. Some of the things she told me he'd said were just disgusting.
Finally, and most concerning, he had originally been buying a little weed from his neighbors now and then. That turned into him demanding weed. And money. And food. Food stamps got cut back, and instead of cutting back on the kratom and smokes, he would just beg and demand his neighbors feed him, give him money, and weed. When they wouldn't, he would start screaming he was going to go kill himself. THAT was why he had asked me about a pistol. However, he has a shotgun.
That apartment complex has 2 rules on the front page of the lease. No guns. No drugs. And here he was begging for drugs and when he didn't get it, saying he was going to go off himself with his gun.
I probably shouldn't have, but I went and confronted him at the hospital. He denied everything. Said I was crazy and his neighbors made everything up. Everyone was lying except for him. I told him that was BS, everything his neighbors had told me he'd done lined right up with the things he'd done to me, so I knew he was full of crap. He kicked me out of his room. I told him that was fine, but I was going to talk to a social worker because he needed help.
The nurses got a social worker for me, and I sat down with her for about 45 minutes and explained everything. He was threatening suicide. There was no food in his apartment. His apartment is disgusting, his bedroom reeks like feces. His neighbors do not think he can take care of himself. He is addicted to that kratom stuff and its causing dementia issues, or he just straight up has dementia. But he has something going on. He doesn't take his medications correctly, he just kind of takes what he wants, when he wants. And, he doesn't go to dialysis. He's supposed to go 3 days a week. He goes once, maybe twice, and he only stays about half the time. So that was likely causing him mental issues as well.
I've not talked to him since last Sunday. I can't do it anymore. I have tried so hard to help him, and he treats you like shit. I am absolutely disgusted at the sexual stuff he was doing. He's also made comments around my daughters, like some tampons were left out and he acted like it was kryptonite and went on and on about how disgusting a package of tampons was and he didn't want to be around it. I have twin daughters, with autism, and the last thing they need to hear from someone they see as an authority figure is how disgusting their periods are. He's made horrible comments about my wife. I honestly think he was pushing me to get a divorce, back when he lived with me. He'd say horrible shit about my wife and then say I should just leave her so that me and him could spend more time together.
He hasn't tried to contact me. He did text his neighbors a bunch (and they forwarded me everything) and basically demanded to know what all they had told me and why they did that. So...he knows he's guilty. He's embarrassed, and he knows I'm not putting up with his crap anymore. And I just flat out don't want to even talk to him.
I have been taking care of paying his bills for him, I log in to his checking account and move bill money to a separate account every month and pay his bills with that. I also pay his car insurance and cell phone out of my pocket. Well, thats over with. Both get turned off at the end of the June billing period.
I put a letter together for him with all of his bills, amounts, where to mail checks, etc, and explained he needed to find his own cell plan and car insurance. I would send it certified mail, but I know he won't go sign for it because he's lazy. So I'm probably just going to go tape it to his front door when I know he's not home.
I am worried he is going to try to retaliate against me. He is going to be very mad I talked to a social worker and both my wife and his neighbors opened adult protective service investigations. He's made threats in the past that if I didn't do what he wanted, he would make false accusations about me to CPS and the police.
And on top of all of that, I am going on vacation next week, taking my family to the west coast, so we won't be home. My neighbors know what is going on, and I asked them to let me know if they saw him creeping around.
I do know that is foot is broken, and the other foot is missing the big toe and has a lot of pain, his wound care doctor wants to remove the rest of his toes on that foot. So at the very least he's going to be in a boot and a walker. But I strongly suspect since its been a week and he's not home yet, he's probably being sent to a nursing home to recover.
Sooner or later he is going to try to reach out. Either with a bullshit apology, or just more insults and demands. I'm worried about him making false accusations, but I would hope the APS cases being open against him would show he's a nutjob. But the last thing I want to deal with is a CPS investigation because he called and said I hit my kids or something.
For the last several years, I have just wanted him to go away. And now I REALLY want him to go away. I don't want him to bother me. I just want to be happy and live my life, and I am so much happier when he isn't around.
I'm worried he is going to wait until I am on vacation to do something, or start problems, because he knows how big of a headache it will be for me.
I just want this anxiety to go away that every time my phone dings, its going to be him with a new insult or demand or threat, telling me to do what he says or else.

2023.05.27 21:43 IrishFuryHD Orioles Beat - Mike Elias on prospect hot topics
BALTIMORE -- Mike Elias held a routine media session on Friday evening at Camden Yards, and he had plenty to share. The Orioles’ general manager gave updates on injured pitchers John Means and Dillon Tate -- both having experienced minor setbacks in their recoveries -- while also proclaiming the team is “preparing to be buyers” at the Aug. 1 Trade Deadline.
Elias made a few noteworthy comments regarding several of Baltimore’s top prospects as well, answering several burning questions fans may have had. Here are three takeaways:
- Colton Cowser’s left quad injury isn’t a long-term concern Whenever a top prospect is missing from his team’s Minor League lineup on a given night, there’s almost always speculation of whether he may be getting called up to the Majors. But when Cowser was out of Triple-A Norfolk’s lineup on May 17, it was because the 23-year-old outfielder was dealing with left quad tightness.
On May 20, the Tides placed Cowser on the seven-day injured list. The Orioles’ No. 2 prospect (and MLB Pipeline’s No. 29 overall prospect) remains on the IL, though Elias is anticipating an imminent return for Cowser.
“Should be pretty soon. I don’t have a particular timeline, but I’m hopeful that it’s measured more in days than weeks at this point,” Elias said. “I don’t think this is a major injury.”
Once Cowser is back, he’ll continue trying to force Baltimore’s hand in promoting him to The Show for the first time. Through 37 games for Norfolk this season, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2021 Draft is slashing .331/.469/.554 with eight doubles, one triple, seven homers and 28 RBIs.
- Jackson Holliday is on track to reach Double-A Bowie this year Even though Holliday — Baltimore’s No. 1 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 3 overall prospect — was promoted from Single-A Delmarva to High-A Aberdeen less than a month into his first full professional season on April 24, the Orioles were hesitant to present Double-A Bowie as a realistic target for the 19-year-old shortstop in 2023. After all, many previous top prospects had initially struggled upon making the jump to High-A.
Not Holliday. In fact, his numbers with Aberdeen have been even more stunning than the ones he put up with Delmarva earlier in the year:
13 games with Delmarva: .392/.523/.667 with six doubles, one triple, two homers, 15 RBIs, 15 runs scored, 14 walks and three stolen bases
25 games with Aberdeen: .398/.518/.693 with six doubles, four triples, four homers, 20 RBIs, 27 runs scored, 22 walks and eight stolen bases
Does Double-A seem like a reasonable expectation for Holliday in 2023 now?
“If he, fingers crossed, stays healthy, this doesn’t look like the pace of a guy that’s going to stay at A-ball all year,” Elias said. “We want to do the right thing by his development. I don’t think just skipping across the waves and not really spending any time [at High-A is] a good idea. But we’ll move him if and when we think it’s the exact right thing to do for his development.”
- Heston Kjerstad could soon be promoted to Triple-A Norfolk Kjerstad raked in the Arizona Fall League, winning the league’s MVP Award last fall, then all throughout Spring Training. So it’s unsurprising the 24-year-old outfielder has just kept on hitting in his first taste of Double-A this season.
Through 38 games with Bowie, Kjerstad is slashing .313/.391/.613 with nine doubles, three triples, 10 homers and 21 RBIs. It’s not common for such a mature hitter to be at this level, but the No. 2 overall Draft pick in 2020 missed all of ‘21 due to myocarditis and early ‘22 with a left hamstring strain.
Now, Kjerstad (the Orioles’ No. 4 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 51 overall prospect) is on the precipice of potentially being promoted to Triple-A.
“We’re talking about what to do with him next,” Elias said. “Not saying anything’s imminent, but it’s becoming a constant conversation in the front office about when’s the right move for him.”
