How do I criticise our drummer without offending him?

2023.06.07 14:44 WrinklyJoe How do I criticise our drummer without offending him?

Hi there, I'm the lead vocalist in a little underground rock group. Our band has been together for about 9 months, and ever since it started, I've noticed our drummer struggles a lot with things he shouldn't really be struggling with. He's been drumming for about 5 years longer than I've been singing, yet he doesn't understand certain basic drumming terms and techniques. I'm not a drummer myself, but I grew up watching my dad play, so I know my way around a kit, and often times I find myself, the singer, having to explain and demonstrate things to him that he seems to have difficulty doing. He has a lot of difficulty maintaining a strict tempo, often extends or shortens fills longer or shorter than the end of the bar, meaning me and the guitarists are thrown out of kilter by the missing or added beats, and he has a lot of trouble playing anything that isn't your standard 4/4 beat. What makes this worse is that he insists on trying to play more complicated beats, even though he doesn't have the capability to manage a lot of them. This leads to a lot of our music sounding very sloppy, as everyone is constantly thrown off by the out of tempo fills and hopelessly sloppy and overcomplicated rhythms. The worst part is that he doesn't seem to be aware that any of it sounds this way. I'm VERY close friends with my drummer, he's one of my best friends on earth, and he takes criticism VERY personally so I've been deterred from saying anything for these past months. We've got a HUGE gig for us coming up and I want to make sure he's tight so we can make a good impression. Can any musicians on this sub help me out in giving him advice and tightening us up?

2023.06.07 13:35 freshmaker_phd PSA - r/ClevelandGuardians Will be Going Dark from June 12-14 In Protest Against Reddit's API Changes

Hello from the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.
This isn’t a fun post to make. We’d rather see memes about Naylor’s baby or Jose’s helmet, but alas, desperate times call for desperate measures. The mods here at ClevelandGuardians have been talking about what we want to do and what we feel is best for our community and, having discussed this at length, we have come to a consensus and feel this is a very important post that we hope you will take the time to read.
Recently Reddit has announced widespread changes to the API (application programming interface) which, if they follow through on, will shut down many if not all of the 3rd party apps that a not-so-insignificant number of Redditors use to access and participate in their favorite communities - Our small corner of the internet included.
One of the most critical changes to the API is that Reddit has announced they wish to move from a free to a paid API model, and at a rate that will result in expenses to the developers of the 3rd party apps simply cannot afford. To put this into a tangible context, Apollo, one of the most popular 3rd party apps for Reddit, is looking at a cost off $1.7M/mo. just to continue their current operations. That is a cost of $12,000 per 50 million API requests. By contrast, Apollo pays Imgur a mere $166 for every 50 million API requests.

This means popular apps like Apollo, Reddit Is Fun, Narwhal and many more will have to shut down, permanently.

Not using one of those apps? Are you a filthy casual like u/freshmaker_phd that uses the Reddit app? This will still impact you in how it will change our subreddit and many, many other communities you visit or participate in. The mods here even use tools which rely on these API integrations to make our job in maintaining this community easier and faster for us. The impacts are huge here, and much bigger beyond our corner of the internet, and it is important you understand them.
In our case specifically, it means that u/CLEbot would not be able to perform its usual automated duties for us in delivering the content you’ve come to expect and enjoy from our community. That includes posting daily discussion threads, gameday threads and in-game updates to the gameday thread, and postgame threads among other lesser-known duties. On top of all that, it paints a bleak picture of what is to come for those of us who use other tools, like Reddit Enhancement Suite and old.reddit.com.

Here's a little TLDR on why this is important

So What Are We Doing?

Starting on June 12th and running through June 13th, we and a growing number of other subs - large and small - will go dark for 48 hours. During that time, you will not be able to view or post any content on ClevelandGuardians.
We understand how this will impact you, as the Guardians will be kicking off a west coast road trip that week. We recognize how important this subreddit is to keep up with our team. However, we also recognize how important this issue is and feel we must take a collective stand on this issue to show Reddit that our voices must be heard.
Whether we want to like it or not, Reddit is a company that must make money in some way to afford us this corner of the internet we call home. Hosting this platform isn’t free, nor cheap, and ad revenue only goes so far. However, Reddit intentionally killing 3rd party apps by pricing them out of existence is not the right answer. We don’t expect Reddit to make API services free to all, but would expect those who run this site to be sensible and reasonable in how they choose to price their services and make their API data accessible.
Will this collective black out solve the problem? We can’t tell you that because we just don’t know how much of an impact this will have, but we have to try something to get their attention.

How to Support This Cause

Our participation in the protest is just one part of this effort. You as an individual user can help too. Reach out to Reddit via sending a modmail to Reddit, comment in the threads the admins post regarding these API changes, and submit comments via the contact forms. Use the means available to you to make them aware of what this will do to our communities. Spread the word via social media and let others who may not be as avid users of Reddit know what’s going on. The reason is simple: ###Raise Awareness.
Lastly, if you so choose…

Stay off Reddit completely from June 12th until June 14th. Users globally choosing to not visit the site will have a visible impact that Reddit will surely notice.

Lastly, and arguably most importantly… DONT BE A JERK. Frustrating and annoying as this might be for many, this is not the time nor place (if there even was one) to be toxic or otherwise uncivil towards others, especially the admins. As the Reddiquette says… Remember the human.
Thanks,
-Mods

Ukraine dam: What we know about Nova Kakhovka incident • A huge dam in the Russian-controlled area of southern Ukraine has been destroyed, unleashing a flood of water.
The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant is in the city of Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson region. The city is currently under Russian occupation. The dam is one of six that sit along the Dnipro river, which stretches all the way from the very north of the country into the sea in the south. In Kherson region, Russia occupies the left, or southern, bank while Ukraine controls the right, or northern, bank. The dam holds back a reservoir equal in volume to the Great Salt Lake in the US state of Utah, according to Reuters. It's huge - locals call it the Kakhovka Sea as you cannot see the other bank in certain places.
Stills and video showed a massive breach in the dam, with water surging through it and flooding downstream in the direction of Kherson. It's unclear when exactly the dam was first damaged, but satellite images suggest its condition deteriorated over a number of days.
Hundreds of people living in low lying parts of the city of Kherson, less than 50 miles downstream from Nova Kakhovka, have been evacuated, 2,000 houses on the Ukrainian-controlled right bank of the river had been submerged and the Nova Kakhovka station was "fully destroyed" and could not be restored. The river has also been contaminated with 150 tonnes of industrial lubricant. There are concerns about desertification, with agricultural land washed away by flood waters and the negative consequences of the flooding likely to be felt for years. At the same time some 94% of irrigation systems for agriculture in Kherson region were now without a water source, the ministry added.
It's not yet clear what caused the breach in the dam, but Ukraine's military has accused Russia of deliberately blowing it up. This seems plausible, as Moscow may have feared that Ukrainian forces would use the road over the dam to get troops across the river into Russian-held territory, as part of a counter-offensive. But the Kremlin instead blamed Ukraine, calling it an act of "sabotage" that would deprive the Crimean peninsula - an area annexed by Russia in 2014 - of water. Neither Ukraine nor Russia's claims have been verified by the BBC.

2023.06.07 13:32 shitbjpsays r/ShitBJPSays will be going Private for 48 hours on June 12th, 2023

Hello ShitBJPSays,

We as a community are standing in solidarity with the third-party apps, as many of us have been using reddit through those apps on mobile since many years. We will be making ShitBJPSays private for 48 Hrs from 12th June 2023, which will make the sub inaccessible to all users.

Why are we doing this?

What are the expectations from Reddit?

  1. Lower the price of API calls to a level that doesn't kill Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, Bacon Reader, and similar third-party apps.
  2. Communicate on a more open and timely basis about changes to Reddit which will affect large numbers of moderators and users.
  3. To allow mods to continue keeping Reddit safe for all users, NSFW subreddit data must remain available through the API.

What can you do?

Conclusion

Thank you for understanding and your cooperation will be appreciated.

Hello RelationshipIndia
We as a community are standing in solidarity with the third-party apps, as many of us have been using Reddit through those apps on mobile for many years. We will be making RelationshipIndia private for 48 Hrs from 12th June 2023, which will make the sub inaccessible to all users who are not members of the subreddit.
Why are we doing this? It's possible that those of you who are active on other subreddits may have read about the changes in pricing that Reddit has recently released for its API. (The system apps use to get and send data from and to Reddit.) But for those of you who haven't, here's a summary. On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo, to Dystopia, to Reddit for Blind, to Infinity. Even if you don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customising Reddit, such as the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This doesn't only impact your ability to access Reddit in a fluid, customizable, and efficient way; many of us on the mod team are also blind, and we depend on those third party apps to make sure that this community remains a safe, fun, and productive place. Unfortunately, new Reddit, and the official Reddit apps, just don't provide us with the levels of accessibility we need in order to continue effectively running this community.
Conclusion
Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation will be appreciated.

2023.06.07 13:27 egnards I have altered the Math Club Public Sheet to be more user friendly - Pray I do not alter it further

Here is the link - fixed
It is read only - You may make a copy of the sheet to do your own thing, but as soon as kiwis start sending me data I will be updating this specific sheet on the day of the chase.
Before I get into my notes. Seriously a huge thank you to u/Rymas1 for looking it over last night. He took me idiot brain caveman formulas and made me look like a far more classy bitch than I ever will be, I almost feel like Julia Roberts. There are a few minor bugs with the sheet that should not be affected by this current chase at all, that I will update in the future when I have time to sit down with them.
On the day of the chase I probably will still make a post with all the actual Tl;DR math for the super lazy people.
Notes

Like my posts? Want to keep track of them? Here's a nifty little index post where I keep track of any threads I create that I deem important enough to eventually go back to. I guess you can follow me too, a lot of you have been doing that lately, it's kinda creepy - I get that feeling, like somebody's watching me.

At present, details of what the partnership will involve, beyond mutual brand outreach, remain slight. In a statement for Cointelegraph, Bybit CEO Ben Zhou pointed to BVB's huge popularity, characterizing its fan base as the seventh-largest in the world. He said:

2023.06.07 13:14 rob-cubed Powkiddy did a great job with the x28

Powkiddy gets very little love, but I have to say I'm enjoying my x28. I think Powkiddy finally got enough things right on this one to make it a contender. What's to like?
What's not to like?
Overall it feels like a poor man's Odin. Not to discredit the Odin, which is undoubtedly a nicer device, but it has a similar form factor and enough power to be compared to it. If you are a stickler about controls or obsessed with screen quality, you might be disappointed with the x28. But I'm loving mine, even sold the RP3+... just didn't play it much anymore. The x28 just feels right, Powkiddy got the size and shape perfect and I hope they (and other manufacturers) continue to focus on mid-size devices with molded shells.

2023.06.07 12:50 GlasgowBoy1993 M4F - Best Birthday ever

We had such a small family now. All that was left was just me, my parents, my two older brothers with their wives and my sexy Aunt. Every major birthday or holiday you'd make the trip across the country to see us and we put you up in our cozy guest house just behind the main house.
We had just finished off an incredible day celebrating your birthday with an amazing dinner that my mom had put together for everyone and the champagne had now been opened. When the third bottle was finished and everyone started talking about heading to bed you asked if anyone wanted another couple of drinks, to which I agreed. You were the most fun person in the family after all.
I said I'd meet you in the guest house in a few minutes and went back to my room to change into a comfortable pair of grey jogging pants and a plain white T-shirt before grabbing an extra present I had bought for you. When I got to the guest house I let myself in and quickly found you sitting on the sofa and walked up behind you before placing two tickets on your lap and wrapping my arms around you in a cuddle before whispering in your ears "Happy Birthday. I hope it's everything you dremt of...". The tickets were for a cruise you had mentioned to me a few times through the year.
So I'm looking for a taboo rp between a guy in his mid 20s and his smoking hot aunt.
How would she react to the gift he had given her? Had they ever done anything together before? These are things we can discuss before if you want or we can just dive in.
I'm open to almost anything with my only hard limits being Age play, permanent scarring and pegging. So feel free to suggest anything you want to include.
I added in the second ticket as the boy hopes to be invited along if we want to make it long term, though I am happy to play it short term too.
Now as for preferences, I love to write in first person but am competent and happy to write in third person depending on the partner.
I live in Scotland and therefore am in BST and understand the vast majority of people who post/reply on these boards won't link up ideally in terms of time so am happy for something with slower replies as long as there is the quality to back it up.
The characters are open to input, so please feel free to suggest ideas for the aunt or nephew. I'm open to discussions on both if you have ideas on the nephew's looks, especially if it's to line up with kinks you have.
Hope to hear from you soon

2023.06.07 12:41 Meaning-Plenty O’ Pir Panchal

After remaining invincible and impregnable for centuries, the mighty Pir Panchal is witnessing enormous developmental activity for a new expressway, a challenging railway line and most of the dam-fed hydropower projects involving an investment of tens of thousands of crores. At places, this is triggering the fragile range to cave in at the cost of homes and livelihoods of age-old villages, a situation that experts believe could have been avoided with better pre-feasibility studies and sophisticated project implementation, reports Masood Hussain
Anticipated for years, finally, the increased incidence of land subsidence and sinking in the Pir Panchal Mountains is Jammu and Kashmir’s new normal. The young fragile and unstable mountain range separating Kashmir from the rest of the world is in news frequently as the slopes housing small habitations for centuries are caving in.
On February 19, 2023, around 16 structures of Duksar Dalwa (Duksar Dal), a hamlet almost 45 km uphill from Ramban, suffered serious damage as the land caved in. It crippled road connectivity between Gool and Ramban where almost 500 meters developed cracks, tripped the electric supply and snapped the water supply. Three homes developed cracks forcing authorities to shift the impacted population to safer areas.
Officials said while they are working overtime to resume power and water supplies, they are also improving the Dharam-Salballa road to make it an alternative supply route to the “literally disconnected” area. In the sinking village, the official encouraged the residents to move swiftly to safer spots. For residents, however, the gradual 3-day sinking was a painful watch of their life earnings slowly cracking up and becoming black holes over hills.
It started with a crater that widened to almost 500 meters during two nights, making almost everything around unsafe, unstable and life-threatening. A mosque, Darsgah, the village seminary and the village graveyard were destroyed. Residents quickly exhumed a recently buried body and laid it to rest at a “safe” place.
Officials who visited the spot said the village’s agriculture fields were rendered useless, pushing residents into poverty. They lost homes and their livelihoods too.
The Duksar erasing came less than a fortnight after Doda lost a cluster of houses to a similar instance on February 3, 2023. Located on the foothills on the road to Kishtwar near Thathri, nearly 35 km from Doda, the volunteers, residents and government officials had to quickly shift 117 members of 19 families as the patch of slope housing the Nai Basti cluster gave in within three days. A total of 21 structures cracked and became unsafe.
Horrific Tunnel Collapse
The last horrific tragedy took place on May 19, 2022, when the workers were digging into an adit (minor access to the T3 tunnel) near Khooni Nalla at Ramsu’s Makerkot area. It collapsed over them killing ten workers including two local residents and eight Nepalese labourers. The tragedy struck during the day amid incessant rain but still, only two persons could be rescued alive.
The workers were on the challenging stretch of the national highway between Digdole and Khooni Nallah, which is otherwise notorious for frequent landslides and shooting stones due to fragile geology. It was part of the twin-tube tunnel that would connect Digdole to Panthyal and was implemented by Ceigall India Limited in a JV with Patel Engineering Limited. (The contractor has been imposed a heavy fine.)
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) that has taken over the Jammu Srinagar national highway from Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a few years back, is constructing at least five tunnels to bypass the highway’s 3-km “killer’’ stretch from Panthyal to Makerkote. Tunnel T3 is part of this intervention.
Unlike the rest of the highway, the 36-km Banihal Ramban stretch has been the most challenging one and that is why it is still under implementation. On this stretch are six “killer spots” located on a 14-km road stretch and NHAI intends to spend Rs 2000 crore to manage this. Implementation of this would offer some safety from frequent halts owing to shooting stones at Marog, Panthial, Digdol and Battery Chashma.
Triggering Instability
Implementation of these projects is triggering crises for the localities living around them. As many as 13 houses in Sujmatana village near Ramsu were literally devastated. The round-the-clock blasting for the tunnel projects and cutting work made these houses inhospitable after they developed cracks. Most of them have left their unsafe homes and migrated elsewhere. Though officials are looking into the crisis since 2017, it is yet to be settled.
On August 4, 2022, 36 families had a providential escape when their Bassan village in Reasi became the casualty of sinking and erosion at the same time. Without any notice, landslides carried down boulders and muck that crashed the houses and put the agriculture fields out of sight. It was so abrupt, villages said, that they had no time to take their belongings along.
Officials admitted that almost 60 kanals of land sank as another 400 kanals patch was rendered useless. Almost all the fruit trees, mostly walnut and apricot, were engulfed in mud. Almost 200 meters of a PMGSY road was also downthrown by around 25 meters from its actual alignment.
The earlier worst case was reported from Dalwas when on March 28, 2020, the residents fled when their homes and fields were literally buried by landslides. Almost 40 households were impacted.
The village has been there for ages and never experienced any such threat. Then one day it literally disappeared. Residents alleged that being away from Srinagar and Jammu, deep into the mountains they hardly were reported. At one point in time when they wanted to protest, authorities invoked Covid19 concerns to prevent it.
Response Protocol
Over the years, the government response has remained unchanged. Once the reports land that spots are sinking, they as the first quick reaction, send cops, paramilitary, SDRF and revenue officials to oversee and, in most cases, extend help in quick evacuations. In stage two, the respective Deputy Commissioner writes to geologists and the Department of Geology and Mining and, off late, to the Geological Survey of India, who rush their experts to these spots. In the subsequent few days, they study the local rock formations and submit reports, part of which goes to newspapers and by and large the files get closed.
At the same time, files start rolling about relief and rehabilitation. It takes its own time. In many cases, people who lose their homes and livelihoods are yet to be properly rehabilitated.
Invariably, the policymakers and the administrators avoid two vital ingredients of the story – the assessments that the local populations make about the crisis they land in and the wider angle that remains unchanged across the Pir Panchal range.
Resident Assessments
Affected populations are unwilling to accept that these crises are natural. They see them as man-made disasters. Raqeeb Wani, a former Sarpanch of Daskar Dalwa told The Telegraph that his village’s erasing is directly linked to the construction of two railway tunnels downhill, that would link a 3km rail track between Sangaldan and Chaddi. He attributed it to the “continuous blasting” that loosens the soil and adds to the instability of the mountain.
“A few years ago, we had a similar disaster in Sangaldan a few years ago when an entire market caved in,” Wani was quoted as saying. “That also was owing to the railway project.”
In the case of Dalwas, for instance, a former lawmaker from Ramban Ashok Kumar Dogra said the “unscientific planning” of the widening of the national highway is responsible. “The highway authorities started excavation of the road from beneath the village without raising any wall on the side of the village. As no concrete measures were taken by the NHAI to protect the village and debris was also disposed of at the same place, the tragedy was bound to happen and the houses collapsed and the village sank,” Dogra told Outlook. “I will not call it a natural disaster. It was the unplanned construction that destabilised the soil of the whole area, leading to its sinking.”
Right to A Road
Pir Panchal mountain range has remained literally invincible and technically impregnable for centuries. It took decades of thought process and a lot of resources to lay a foot track between Jammu and Srinagar, to have an alternative to Mughal Road. Known to history as the Banihal Cart Road, it was difficult and always retained by Dogra despots as a private route. It remained inaccessible to people till 1922. Till the Jawahar Tunnel was inaugurated, the road would pass over the Banihal pass, the abandoned remnants of which still exist.
This made Kashmir rely on the Jhelum Valley Road (JVR) as the main highway.
Almost 225 residents from 48 households who somehow survived the tragedy moved to another village and are still struggling to pick the threads of their lives. Though life has returned to the village, they are still fighting for an electric supply line and the rebuilding of the school building.
An Upcoming Railway
The road is just not the only thing that is happening deep inside the Pir Panchal mountain range. While the road is being upgraded, there is a railway project in an advanced stage of implementation.
Unlike the road that is being laid over the foothills not far away from the old alignment that also followed a foot track of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the railway track is passing through a virgin area, part of which has not seen even a bus. For making rail reach Baramulla from Udhampur, the 272-km project is going to cost a whopping Rs 37012 crore of which more than ninety per cent has already been spent.
Work on JVR started in 1880 and was formally thrown open in September 1890, when Maharaja Partap Singh was driven through from Baramulla to Kohala. The construction of this gigantic road project was implemented by a major British Indian contractor M/S Spedding, Mitchell & Co and was overseen by different British engineers at different stretches. While General de Bourbel oversaw everything as the Chief Engineer Kashmir, it was Alexander Atkinsonmanagedmost of the road up to Chakoti (on the other side of LoC now) and a few parts on the Kashmir side; Farrant was in charge of construction between Chakotiand Baramulla; as EG Hebbert supervised its completion in November 1889. Resources apart, it cost too many lives. Between Chakoti and Baramulla, 54 Pathans were killed in four years. Besides, 20 lives were lost to snake bites.
Post-partition, the Banihal Road became arterial and pressure built with a surge in population and demand in Kashmir. For seven decades, this road bore the brunt of all the pressures of travel, demand and consumerism and gave in. The rise of the Kashmir apple added another pressure factor so did the security requirements.
Finally, a stage reached that the health of the national highway was directly linked to the economic well-being of Kashmir. This paved the way for the decision by the Government of India that distances need to be reduced and the highway must be improved so that commuters do not end up spending a day on a 300-km highway.
More than a decade after the first spadework, it is emerging as one of the best roads. There are three major tunnels that have skipped dangerous patches while reducing distance and uphill driving: a set of four small tunnels near Nandni with a combined length of 1.4 km; 9.2 km Chenani-Nashri tunnel has bypassed a gruelling uphill drive and 8.5 km Banihal-Qazigund tunnel is going to tame dangerous Banihal Pass forever.
Distance has dropped from 300 to 270 km and the travel time from 12 to around 5 hours. But the Banihal-Ramban stretch remains a challenge. Earlier, it was merely a technological crisis, now it is a serious ecological issue.
These villagers were fortunate in comparison to the Sadal hamlet of Udhampur which was buried under a massive mudslide at noon on September 6, 2014. Following incessant rains for many days, it triggered massive floods in Kashmir and the rest of the erstwhile state. As many as 41 residents from 65 households were killed by the wee hour mountain collapse that brought an almost 30-foot-thick blanket of rafted rock fragments mud, sludge and rubble.
The rail is already chugging between Udhampur and Katra (25 km) since July 2014, Baramulla to Qazigund (118 km) since October 2009; and Qazigund to Baramulla (18 km) since June 2013. This leaves the most challenging stretch of 111 km between Banihal and Katra to be implemented.
However, the cost of the track does not define the project. It is the work that details the challenge. Nearly 119 km of the entire track will pass through 38 tunnels, the longest of which is 12.77 km long.
What is interesting is that in the 111-km Banihal – Katra track, 97.42 km are tunnels and most of the rest are bridges. Railway officials have to do 163.82 km of tunnelling in total – 66.4 km are escape tunnels – to make the track possible. For making these tunnel spots accessible to men and machines, there is a network of 205 km of roads, which remain busy round the clock.
This track will have 37 bridges – totalling 7 km in length, including the iconic Chenab Bridge, which is tipped to be the highest railway bridge on earth. While this bridge is ready, the current focus is on the first cable-stayed railway bridge on Anji Khad.
With thousands of people working deep inside the mountains with basic cutting and blasting machinery a lot of activity is generated.
There were dozens of instances in which the portions of various tunnels collapsed resulting in either changing the alignment or repairing the damage and restoring the tunnel. In July 2006, an almost 3 km long tunnel on the Udhampur-Katra track gradually started sinking after massive soil swelling on the two ends making it unusable and thus delaying the project. Northern Railways later hired an Austrian consultant, Geo Consult International (GCI), to salvage the project after many years of delay. The causes of the damage were visible to even the then Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said he saw “a river flowing under the tunnel”.
A number of tunnels between Katra and Sangaldan witnessed “abnormal” water discharge making construction a challenging task. In Sangladan, the managers were shocked when they saw a 500-meter track between two tunnels actually missing one fine morning. Reported in 2006, it destroyed a vast stretch of land on a slope housing as many as 100 structures besides over 400 meters of the road connecting Mahore and Gulabgarh.
In 2016 summer of 2016, authorities shifted 124 families – almost the entire village of Dharam, after the vast patch of land that housed the hamlet caved in within three months. Though the officials attributed it to natural reasons, the residents linked the unprecedented situation to the ongoing work on the railway line passing close to the village.
Oceans In Gorges
Piercing the Pir Panchal mountains for smooth, faster and better communication is just not the only thing happening in the region. Owing to the mighty Chenab, the region is Jammu and Kashmir’s powerhouse. More than 90 per cent of the hydropower potential is restricted to the region owing to the availability of water and enough space to construct dams within the mountain gorges. This has led to a situation where the region holds a massive amount of water in its dams.
The region’s tryst with power generation started late last century with the implementation of the 900-MW Salal power project in Reasi in 1978. The project’s 1.45 million cubic meter dam has created the Salal lake which has the capacity to retain more than 28 million cubic meters of water.
Then came the 390-MW Dul-Hasti Power Project near Kishtwar. It was followed by the 900-MW Baglihar power with 1.8 cubic meters of the dam and an additional reservoir capacity of 39.5 cubic meters – a facility that has created a huge water body in the mountain gorges between Chanderkote belt and Thathri to the extent that certain localities and infrastructures had to be relocated. Quite a few people still live in the highway town of Pul Doda.
The region has many other power projects at different stages of implementation. These include 850-MW Rattle, 100-MW Pakal Dul, 624-MW Kiru, 540-MW Kwar, 800-MW Bursar, and 930-MW Kirthai-II. This is an investment of tens of thousands of crore in mountain gorges on a single river within a river length of fewer than 100 km.
Baglihar is the only project that Jammu and Kashmir’s fully-owned JKSPDC owns. Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd, a joint venture between JKSPDC and NHPC, India’s hydropower giant, is implementing four power projects – Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar and Karthia-II. Salal and Dul Hasti owned fully by NHPC and Ratle is being executed under a fresh JV with JKSPDC in which the latter holds 49 per cent stakes.
Stakes apart, hydropower stations are gigantic projects. These need huge spaces for water storage – even in the case of run-of-the-river schemes, and a lot of tunnelling. All projects have main tunnels, both head race and tail race, and then there are a lot of additional adits and small tunnels for servicing. Even though most of the tunnels and the dams are concrete structures, having such critical infrastructure usually triggers soil erosion and soil swellings too often. The 110-km Batote Kishtwar road has been ailing for all these years. Never in a year could it operate for all 365 days.
Cause versus Consequence?
Science has fundamentally opposed the idea of correlating causes with consequences especially when there is no plausible explanation. In the case of the Pir Panchal region, however, there are striking correlations. For most of recent history, land sliding has been happening around the national highway only. However, in the last decade, land subsidence is a routine and it is happening at all places where developmental activities are going on.
Bhaderwah town and its surroundings are witnessing “region-exclusive” tremors almost every year. In August 2022, there were 21 tremors, reaching up to 3.9 on the Richter scale. Such summer tremors have been there in 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In fact, 2013 was harrowing as the earthquakes touched 5.8 on the Richter scale.
Land patches are caving in at spots closer to some kind of major developmental activity. This is as true with railway projects as it is in road widening projects. Certain spots caved in because works were implemented without a detailed study.
In Sangaldan, for instance, when the railway track collapsed, it was pointed out by geologist Prof GM Bhat that it had been built “on a fossil slide”, which failed to withstand the weight and crumbled down. “We knew it for decades but we were never consulted,” Bhat said. “In this part of the Himalayas, rock types change after every half a kilometre.”
A respected geologist, Bhat insists that developmental activities can take place in any space that is as fragile as Pir Panchal but it needs adequate pre-implementation study and proper implementation mechanism.
“In the four-laning of the highway, the crisis would have been manageable had there been least vertical cuts,” Bhat said. “Impounding so much of water (in power projects dams) within a small patch has the potential of inducing earthquakes.” He insists that the managers of the water projects must ensure better maintenance of the tunnels or these could become a serious crisis in future.
Bhat, however, sees society also going unruly. “In Banihal near the Mahu Mangat side, a hillock is a completely populated town now,” he said. “Has anybody tried to verify where the waste goes? Are we expecting a major crisis in the coming days when the hill will cave in because of seepage?”
The region is a risky belt given its fragile geology. The upcoming railway line is built over three major active geological fault lines: the Main Boundary Thrust (between Udhampur and Katra), the Muree Thrust (between Baglihar and Sangaldan) and the Panjal Thrust (between Digdol and Mahu Mangat). “I never say railway tracks cannot cross fault lines but I believe that had local expertise been involved, extensive fieldwork would have reduced the costs and perfected the alignment”. Entire Jammu and Kashmir is classified as seismic zone-V, the highest earthquake-prone area. CAG has already done a thick report on the resources that were wasted because of the geological surprises that erupted after various rail projects were implemented. Parts of the alignment were changed and completed works were abandoned.
A fault line actually passes through the centre of the Baghlihar dam and most other reservoirs are very close to the fault lines underneath. “A dam burst will be worse than the earthquake itself,” Bhat, who retired recently after heading the University of Jammu’s Geology Department for a long time, said. Interestingly, the area is reporting an increased incidence of cloudbursts, seen as an indicator of climate change. “One major cloudburst near a dam can trigger unprecedented devastation.”
One such cloudburst on July 28, 2021, almost decimated Honzer, a hamlet concealed within inaccessible mountains of remote Dacchan, killing 26 residents. The bodies of almost 18 of the victims were never found.
Many geologists who studied Dalwa fall attributed the land subsidence to water seepage, and extensive cutting of steep slopes. They have suggested a robust urban land use plan, a prerequisite for any activity, especially in hilly areas.

2023.06.07 11:48 KanadonMuhedad I NEED more not huge metal bands to listen to!

I'll start with a TLDR. Give me metal bands that are decently popular but not huge (Huge like Metallica or such). I want to discover entire discographies to find more music for my playlist. Specifics below.
Hi! About 2 years ago (already???), I went on a few subreddits and asked for people to recommend me some bands to discover.
--- Taste: ---
Last time I discovered and loved: In Flames, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Disturbed, Avatar, As I Lay Dying and others.
Favorite bands would include: In Flames, System Of A Down, My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth & such
Would probably say I'm more into metalcore and such with good open choruses but heavy verses, like As I Lay Dying or some of Trivium, but depending on context I can tolerate scream only vocals, too. (e.g earlier In Flames or even Gojira)
I will add the entire discographies of the bands into a playlist which I will listen to passively for an extended period. (I mean probably hundreds of hours) I will go song by song removing the ones I straight up dislike and adding the ones I do like to my main playlist and removing them from the temporary playlist afterwards. Will link both playlists in the comment section for good measure.
Give me some good recommendations, I hope I'll find a lot of interesting music this time around as well, and I'll be in touch in the comment section with the more notable bands when I'm done with this.

DAWN 2055 - AI Driven Encounters Implemented
Hi everyone,
An update has been added to DAWN 2055 introducing a artificial intelligence driven encounters alongside regular encounters. These react dynamically to various factors, such as players stats, area it takes place, it can talk about player created gangs, top players, etc. Also it can reward players with some items or npcs can join player's group. Overall I think the potential is quite huge, especially for simplebrowser games or text based games.
Encounters are generated using OpenAI API service. The game now features both regular, pre written encounters, and new AI driven ones. The new encounters can be differentiated by the way their text is generated incrementally (the same as chatGPT, if you have used it). There are still some quirks to be ironed out as it has just been implemented, but overall it works quite good!
Blow are some examples:
Here player has a high level, scout speciality and bandit reputation and the ai driven encounter reflects that.
Black Dragons is a gang made by players
Here encounter is about a real player Kalimero
A random encounter with where player meets an npc
Dawn 2055 is a post-apocalyptic themed android / browser game focused on player driven sandbox world.

2023.06.07 10:32 Pradfanne The Apple Vision Pro is a frankensteined amalgamation of exisiting glasses and tools

It's just the Mircosoft Hololens with Sonys Playstation VR2 Eyetracking and an added V-Tuber Mode for Videocalls with a huge range of missing motions and a little TeamViewer Frontline sprinkled in for good measure. To round it off, slap a pair of big goggly eyes, as everyone does, on the front of the glasses, but make it consume the already limited battery power.
Et voilá, Apple Vision Pro!
Edit; now that I think about. the new R1 chip might actually be the crazy thing about this. That's actually a new thing afaik which really helps the Mixed Reality!

Of course, what is the point if you end up buying an electric vehicle that demands a lot of maintenance from you? so be careful about it.
Manufacturer and Model Reputation
Investigate the overall reputation of the electric car manufacturer and the particular model you are considering. Look for reliability, customer satisfaction, and even long-term performance reviews. A reputable and effective manufacturer with a dependable electric car model ensures a better ownership experience.
If possible, do Test Drive and Research
It is important that you give yourself a chance to get an idea about the car. Yes, it is helpful if you do schedule test drives with multiple electric car models to experience their overall features first-hand. Utilize online resources, reviews, and even forums to gather comprehensive information and opinions from present owners before making a final decision. Of course, you have no idea how a test drive may change the entire game for you. the more you explore the car and try your hands on it, the better you can decide.
Check the Resale Value
It is important that you do evaluate the potential resale value of the electric car you mean to purchase. While the electric vehicle market is quite evolving, some models incline to hold their value better than that of others. Consider the long-term resale value to evaluate the total expense of ownership.
Conclusion:
To sum up, selecting the right and effective electric car requires careful consideration of various factors such as your driving needs, even budget, range, charging infrastructure, safety features, and even overall maintenance costs. 2023.06.07 09:09 Teban54 [Analysis] Community Day Haxorus with Breaking Swipe for raids: One of the many dragons

[Analysis] Community Day Haxorus with Breaking Swipe for raids: One of the many dragons

TL;DR

This is not a meta-breaking CD for raids. Not even close.
A small upgrade for Haxorus. Made it go from the bottom of the "group of non-shadow non-Rayquza dragons" (Salamence, Garchomp, Palkia, Dialga, Zekrom) to the top of the group. But it's "just" equal to them, not meaningfully above, and still worse than Breaking Swipe Rayquaza and shadows.
Great chance for new players to build a dragon team. But if you already have a L40+ dragon team, L40 Haxorus does very little to you, being equal to what you have.
The good thing is, L50 Haxorus > L40 non-shadow dragons (though <= L40 Shadows). And Haxorus will be the easiest dragon to go L50 after CD.
Keep reading for:
  • Comparisons to Haxorus and other dragons, with its pros and cons
  • Did we miss out from not getting Outrage?
  • Shadow Haxorus in the future
  • List of my previous analyses - now in Google Sheets!

Introduction

Axew Community Day happens this Saturday, June 10 (for Pokemon #610!), from 2pm to 5pm. Any Haxorus evolved before 10pm will know the CD move, Breaking Swipe.
The move Breaking Swipe made its debut in PoGo back in February, as a raid-exclusive move for Rayquaza. While players quickly recognized it was an incredible move in PvP, its impacts on raid attackers seemed like a nothingburger at first, with a low power of 30. However, I wrote an extensive analysis that showed Breaking Swipe performs better than Outrage on Rayquaza in practice. Despite a lower best-case ceiling (raw DPS), its speediness makes Ray more consistent than the powerful but sluggish Outrage does.
Haxorus never had Outrage to begin with, and until now, its only dragon-type charged move was Dragon Claw. This means Breaking Swipe is a much clearer upgrade on Haxorus as a raid attacker. But how much of an upgrade is it? Does it help Haxorus stand out among dragon types, one of the most contested attacking types for raids?
I'll answer the question with the following parts:
  1. Chart of dragon-type attackers
  2. Breaking Swipe Haxorus compared to every other top-tier non-shadow dragon
  3. Did we miss out by not getting Outrage?
  4. Shadow Haxorus?

[Part 1 TL;DR] Haxorus rises from the bottom of the group of sub-Rayquaza dragons to the top of the group, but still not above the group, and still can't reach Rayquaza or shadows. Great chance for new players to build dragon teams, but those with dedicated teams will need XLs to see benefit. L40 shadows >= L50 Haxorus > any L40 non-shadows.
Dragon attackers ranked by their average in-raid performance, using ASE and ASTTW.
Charts of ASE with and without dodging are here.
Note: Kyurem with Glaciate would have performed similarly to most non-shadow non-mega non-Rayquaza dragons, whenever ice is also super effective.

I'll start by noting that when it comes to dragons, I usually focus more on Estimator (left plot) than TTW. The former considers relobbying, which happens quite often for dragons, because they may take a Super Effective dragon move from the boss.
Breaking Swipe is a clear upgrade on Haxorus, but only a small one - 3.4%.
  • For context, this is similar to the average difference between Draco Meteor and Outrage on Salamence.
However, this matters when comparing Haxorus to the huge group of non-shadow non-Rayquaza dragons (Salamence, Palkia, Garchomp, Zekrom, Dialga, Dragonite), which are all extremely similar to each other. Breaking Swipe moves Haxorus from the bottom of this group to the top.
Despite this, Haxorus still remains within this group - it can't rise above them.
  • Notably, it's still consistently worse than Rayquaza, and far worse than Shadow Salamence and Shadow Dragonite.
  • Even its difference to the rest of the group, like Salamence and Garchomp, is very small if not virtually zero. (At Level 40, their difference is within 1%.)
  • Dragonite is the only one that's clearly worse on average.
So when comparing Level 40 to Level 40 attackers, Haxorus seems like a great "budget" option for new players, but long-term players who already invested in teams of dragons (including Salamence and Garchomp from past CDs) will gain very little from a L40 Haxorus.

Accessibility (XL) matters...

The above only talks about attackers at the same Pokemon level. Any Level 50 non-shadow dragon outperforms another Level 40, regardless of what the two Pokemon are.
Fortunately, Haxorus will be the easiest dragon to get XL candies of - and power up to Level 50 - just after this CD.
  • Many other dragons are legendaries, whose XLs are out of reach for everyone but whales.
  • Even those that had CDs didn't guarantee a huge XL supply. Bagon CD was before XLs became a thing, Gible CD was before Mega Evolutions provided a strong XL boost, and Dratini CD Classic did not come with the 2x XL bonus that non-Classic CDs have.
  • Axew CD not only has all these bonuses, but also has the additional Water Festival bonus of boosted XLs from nice, great and excellent throws!
If you have enough XLs to build one or several L50 Haxorus, they'll likely be your best non-shadow non-mega dragon attackers.
For hardcore players that have already powered up Shadow Salamence and Shadow Dragonite to L40, they're better than Haxorus at any level.

Part 2: Haxorus compared to all other non-shadow dragons

[Part 2 TL;DR] As a glass cannon, Haxorus performs very similarly to non-shadow non-Rayquaza dragons, and worse than Rayquaza. Interestingly, it stands out in cases when most other dragons get OHKOed, thanks to added consistency from Breaking Swipe.
Haxorus vs. other similar Dragon attackers (L40 best friends)
Reminder: I'd prioritize Estimator for dragons due to relobbies.
Looking at estimator, we reach the same conclusion as Part 1 - Haxorus is just as good as every non-Rayquaza dragon now, maybe slightly above a few (Dragonite).
  • Compared to Salamence, Palkia, Garchomp and Zekrom, their estimator "win" rates are almost dead-on 50/50.
Haxorus does have better TTW than non-Rayquaza dragons, which means in large groups where you're certain you won't relobby, Haxorus performs better than the rest. In other words, a glass cannon.
However, Haxorus is consistently worse than Rayquaza (that has Breaking Swipe).
  • Rayquaza and Haxorus have the exact same base attack of 284, but Rayquaza has 15% more bulk, so that's not surprising.
  • The ~10% cases where Haxorus is better mostly come down to typing advantages, such as rock and electric moves from the boss. Even then, Haxorus's advantage is small.

Pros and Cons of Haxorus

Pro 1: Haxorus has great base attack and DPS.
  • Rayquaza's 284 base attack has always been seen as the golden standard for dragons, but Haxorus ties it. No other currently released dragon can: Palkia 280, Salamence 277, etc.
  • Technically, Haxorus's DPS isn't the highest - both Rayquaza and Outrage Salamence are better. (Table) However, its DPS is still higher than all others, and its TTW ("DPS in practice") ends up beating Salamence anyway. Which brings us to Pro 2 below...
  • This usually plays out to Haxorus's advantage if it resists the boss's charged move, or if the boss has weak attacks like Giratina-A. In these cases, Haxorus can live longer and fulfill its DPS potential.
Pro 2: Haxorus is very consistent in cases that are traditionally doomsdays for dragons, thanks to Breaking Swipe.
  • Most dragons rely on Outrage or Draco Meteor, which are both expensive, slow and unreliable moves that take almost 4 seconds. But Breaking Swipe? Takes 0.8 seconds, even shorter than a Dragon Tail, lets you spam consistent charged move damage and get back to Dragon Tails quickly and reduces energy waste.
  • The most advantageous matchups for Haxorus ends up being Palkia, Reshiram and Kyurem raids with Draco Meteor. These are bosses that OHKO most other dragon attackers before they can finish one or two Outrage or Draco Meteor. Haxorus also gets OHKOed, but it can spam more Breaking Swipes before going down.
Con: Haxorus is frail. Very frail.
  • Non-shadow Haxorus's bulk is barely better than Shadow Salamence, and worse than Shadow Dragonite.
  • As a result, the worst-case scenarios for Haxorus are when it gets OHKOed by a charged move, but other dragons survive. Outrage Zekrom raid is a classic example: Haxorus can't tank one until it gets to XL levels.
  • This is why, even though Haxorus does very well in TTW, I didn't emphasize on it. Because if you use 6 Haxorus, you'll have to relobby most of the time.
Overall, Haxorus is a classic glass cannon, but performs more consistently than most other glass cannons due to having Breaking Swipe. Its average power is almost the same as all sub-Rayquaza dragons, but its best-case and worst-case scenarios are a bit different from other dragons.

Part 3: Did we miss out by not getting Outrage?

[Part 3 TL;DR] No. Breaking Swipe is the best Haxorus could have hoped for.
Breaking Swipe vs. Outrage on Haxorus (L40 best friends)
If you plug in Outrage to the GamePress DPS/TDO spreadsheet, you'll see that it has higher DPS than Breaking Swipe. That's why, for a long time, players hoped for Outrage as the CD move.
However, I already showed that even on Rayquaza, Breaking Swipe ends up being better than Outrage. Haxorus, being even glassier than Rayquaza, appreciates a spammy move like Breaking Swipe even more than Ray does. It simply doesn't have the bulk to use Outrage reliably, and Breaking Swipe is basically tailor-made for a glass cannon like this.
In fact, if you compute the average estimators and TTWs (plot from last time), Outrage ends up being a downgrade from even Dragon Claw, which is itself worse than Breaking Swipe.
The detailed comparison of BS vs. Outrage on Haxorus would have been extremely similar to Rayquaza, so I'll omit the details.

Part 4: Shadow Haxorus?

[Part 4 TL;DR] Shadow Haxorus ends up a bit ahead of Shadow Salamence, mostly because the latter "underperforms", not that the former overperforms. But otherwise, the same conclusions from the non-shadow discussion apply to shadows.
Obviously this will not happen anytime soon, but something interesting can be said about Shadow Haxorus with Breaking Swipe, whenever it does become a thing...
Future dragon attackers ranked by ASE and ASTTW.
Charts of ASE with and without dodging are here.
Note: I omitted shadow legendaries other than Rayquaza due to accessibility concerns. The only future shadows shown here are Rayquaza, Haxorus and Garchomp.

Remember when I said Haxorus and Salamence are very similar? Yet, when you compare their shadows in the chart above... Shadow Haxorus has a small but firm gap ahead of Shadow Salamence.
Why? Shadow Salamence, despite it being one of the best dragon attackers right now, is actually underperforming. Whereas Shadow Haxorus doesn't underperform that much.
  • This mostly comes down to consistency. Shadow Salamence loses out on too much bulk from the shadow treatment, that its Outrage becomes unreliable. Even though Shadow Haxorus is paper thin, Breaking Swipe makes its worst cases not as bad.
  • I showed Shadow Garchomp here for this exact reason. Garchomp is very bulky, so the gap between Shadow Haxorus and Shadow Garchomp ends up being similar to their non-shadows. (This also applies to the omitted shadow legendaries, especially Dialga and Zekrom.)
  • Note that with dodging, Shadow Salamence no longer underperforms.
Despite this, Shadow Haxorus remains behind Shadow Rayquaza - but only if Ray also has Breaking Swipe.
  • Shadow Rayquaza with just Outrage would have flopped as badly as Shadow Salamence.
Overall, Shadow Haxorus's placement among future shadow dragons is very similar to their non-shadows: Top of the group, but still not above them.
However, I do not encourage anyone to heavily rely on this info for current and future investments. We have no idea when we'll get Shadow Garchomp, Shadow Haxorus, or multiple Shadow Rayquaza. Plus, it's higly likely that Palkia and Dialga will have their signature moves by then, and their shadows would have destroyed the competition. Given how unpredictable the future is, I wouldn't advise against building Shadow Salamence and Dragonite now, nor would I specifically prepare for Shadow Haxorus.
  • It is true that Axew XL will probably never be so available again, so if your eventual goal is XL Shadow Haxorus, you might want to stock up XLs for that. The question is if you want to (no major reason to), and if you'll still be playing by then.

Closing Remarks

Unlike many pseudo-legendary or "almost pseudo-legendary" CDs, like Tyranitar (for 2018), Metagross, Garchomp (which I felt was overhyped) and Hydreigon, this CD's impact on raid attacker rankings is probably far less than what you may have imagined. This is not a meta-breaking CD, not even close.
CD Haxorus's role ends up being similar to Salamence when its CD first happened in 2019, but even worse - a tiny upgrade, excellent option for new players, but does little for well-prepared players. But this time, "well-prepared" went from "whaled out 6 Rayquaza" to just "did the biggest CDs of the past".
I'm actually okay with it, though. Practically everything has changed from 2019 to 2023. And today, it's harder and harder to make new raid attackers stand out from existing ones, most of which already have shadows and/or overpowered moves. Not all "big hype" CDs can be meta-breaking, and not all of them need to be.
If anything... This is much better than Goomy and Jangmo-o will be, assuming we're only talking about raids. And I'm sure not everyone treats raid relevance as the sole reason to care about CDs - otherwise, Noibat CD wouldn't have been nearly as hyped as it was... Right?
