Delhi Capitals captain David Warner: "It was a bit of a challenge. We had some early momentum with the fast bowlers. They bowled very well in the Powerplay. Nobody means to drop catches and a little bit of momentum shifted there but you can't take it away from the Lucknow team. They batted very well there on a wicket that I thought 170 was par. They did an exceptional job. It's a big thing, momentum in this game. We talk about building partnerships but you can't take it away from Wood. He's an exceptional bowler and he showed his true talent and experience tonight. I felt like you were bowling on two different surfaces from either end. For us it's about going back to the drawing board. For us it's one game. We go back to Delhi in front of our home crowd."
LSG allrounder Marcus Stoinis: "What a brilliant start for us. With our big boys firing, Woody bowling 160 kph and Dappa [Mayers] hitting them 160 meters. So it's a nice feeling. It's only one game but it's a nice start. It was absolutely soaking [in the outfield with dew]. We do practice under lights and do the fielding out here. There's not much you can do. It's quite a sandy surface so the spikes dig through. There's not many answers other than accepting it and practice really. The pitch looked a little different on each end of the wicket. One end seemed to spin a bit more. Dappa at the start gave himself enough balls to see what was happening before exploding. Nicky Pooran batted beautifully and Ayush Badoni as well."
LSG captain KL Rahul: "We were clueless about the pitch. It was a nice way to start and will take a lot of confidence from this. I felt that we were 25-30 runs above par with the way that Kyle batted and the intent of the other batters getting on with the game and taking on the spinners. There was a bit of dew and we thought the wicket would get easier to bat but our bowlers did really well. The whole group, it was Woody's day today. It's always a dream for a fast bowler. When someone is going well and has those kinds of performances, it has a huge impact on the team and on the result of the game. It was Woody's day, he made it count but overall the group put pressure on the batters. It was an important win but we're not gonna make too much of it. We'll take confidence from it but T20 cricket, you need to turn up every day."
Player of the Match is Mark Wood for his 5 for 14: "Last time I was here, I played for CSK and it didn't go quite well. So I wanted to try to make an impact this time and I'm delighted that it's gone well today."

2023.04.01 17:21 beoheed A High Waisted Pants Update and Other Musings
| https://preview.redd.it/jih2dwlacara1.jpg?width=902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4786fc2322015c27cfc3ee87440fb9c9aab9cf44 Hello! As some of you may remember I posted a thread about finding high waisted pants without breaking the bank, for my paunchy short legged, long torso frame, a few months ago. One of the main reasons was that I was tired of how many pants with modern fits emphasized my paunch. Here and there I have teased a summary of the fruits of that thread and it is finally time to write it. I will also include here a link to the google sheet I created for these pants for anyone who stumbles upon this later although I think it needs some updating (there’s no Ben Davis at all. I need to get my measuring tape out!). When I first started this pants revamp I intended to post a picture isolating the pants I’d purchased with just a white t-shirt so you could see exactly how they fit. To be honest I don’t have the patience for making that look nice and no one wants to see my stained undershirts so I decided an outfit compilation would work better, maybe even offer some inspiration as I settle into a personal style (note, as is occasionally discussed here “personal style” and “fashion” are not always the same, high waisted pants aren’t everyones cup of tea). Also, some pictures of my house, I should be wallpapering the nursery as I write this up! A little about my inspirations: I grew up in the 90s watching a lot of culture from the late 30s-50s. In my late teens and 20s I became fascinated by the history of racing, particularly 50s-70s sports car and formula racing. I also come from a long line of Massachusetts social mediocrity (in a hierarchical sense) so if you take those ideas, and mix in some basics of Ivy style and a healthy dose of thrifting and seeking out American made goods you’ll have an idea of where I’m coming from. One final point. I am 5’ 11.75” (don’t accuse me of fudging 6’!), and these pics have me at an average weight of 190 lbs (some a little higher, some a little lower). I measure between 36 and 36.5in waist with a 29 in inseam. Now for the outfits, as noted there is one for each of the pants and pant styles I wanted to isolate: First up, the not at all high rise pants: https://preview.redd.it/7ukw2kpccara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21268cb6f9d668eec59134cdc3ef2601ad8ed507 This outfit is nothing special, I’m including it specifically to show how pants with a more modern rise look. The cords (size 34 with lots of stretch) are Levi’s, I believe 511, that I bought thrifting many years ago. The rugby shirt (medium) was from a Sears that was going out of business and the boots are Allen Edmonds’ Daltons all purchased right around the same time maybe 8(?) years ago. This is an outfit I’ve gotten compliments on, but it's not one that blows me away. It's posted merely for comparison of pants with a more modern fit. Second, the first “high waisted” pants I bought: https://preview.redd.it/w4b755ijdara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08a0b41add1bc88104e9a2ba3358161a34727705 These are the first of two Wallace and Barnes herringbone worker pants, 34 waist. Beneath those are Bushacres, keep a little basic bastard in the mix. Back to the main show, these were the first higher rise pants I bought with that fit in mind although they aren’t exceptionally high, sitting an inch or so below my belly button. The next pants will show what these look like with slightly more involved outfit but here they are as part of a subtle ivyish outfit with some thrifted madras, most importantly tucked to see the waist. Most of the day I was also wearing a vintage postal sweater (both that and the shirt are mediums). For those wondering, the watch is a Vostok on a band from Lake House Leathers (I miss you!) I bought years ago. Third, same as above, but blue! https://preview.redd.it/ur6tthkhcara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7358dc5cbc70ee27f48b374335880f749c1a3eb5 Congratulations, you made it to the more interesting outfits. These are the same pants as above but in navy. No particular inspiration or attempt here, I walk to work but my classroom tends to be warm so layers and variation in sleeve length are key. From the bottom up, the boots are my other pair of Daltons, the shirt was a $5 ebay special with a small repair I had to make 2/3rds of the way between the placket and the underarm, the blazer is the first vintage Pendleton I ever bought in Blackwatch (it has some mothholes that don’t show and some chunky 70s buttons), both medium. My wife got me the hat from Ebbets Field Flannels for Christmas, The Hollywood Stars. Fourth, our first appearance from Bronson: https://preview.redd.it/0qajtygodara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=235b943be0fb5ba6cd3b014aa6367dd46ee8e7e5 With the upcoming baby in my life (referenced in the last post) my wife and I went to Paris for a week, had to bring back a few pieces! We’ll go bottom to top here too, Gilman mocs by Rancourt bought on sale at David Woods in Portland ME. The pants are the 15 oz Heavyweight Selvedge Denim Jeans from Bronson MFG. They sit just above my belly button, just a little lower than the next pants, and obviously have quite broad legs. I’ve had to adjust some outfits to make them work, but I’ve been playing with fit a lot and trying to step away from the slim, “basic bastard” style look from the early 20teens. The henley is from Union Line, the sailing smock is Le Glazik (both mediumish) and the watch is a Seiko 5 dive watch (SNZH55K1) on a band whose origin I couldn’t tell you. My wife crocheted the watch cap! Fifth, Bronson part 2, https://preview.redd.it/vzyjgbkvcara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3d6a010f12d08f8eac50fd18de61781a52ffb08 I like to think of this as the William Frawley fit. I was in a hurry the morning this was taken, that lineup between the shirt and pants… ugh. It certainly gives you a feel for the fit of these pants, which is high and loose and to be honest I love them. The shoes are Lems Boulder Boots I bought on sale as I am trying to work towards wearing mostly minimalist (or at least naturally fitting for my toes) shoes. The pants are Bronson’s 12.5 oz 8 Wale Corduroy Trousers, and the shirt is a heavyweight flannel from J Crew I bought at Savers. These are the last of the Bronson so let me talk a little about my experience with them for a moment. After I placed my order we had an email exchange about size and measurement. The person I talked to seemed to not quite know what to do with someone who knew their measurements as I did, trying to get me to compare them to my normal sizes instead of straight measurements. I am normally on the larger side of medium in US sizing and I seem to run as an XL in their sizing schema so keep that in mind. I’ve seen people concerned about finish, but, aside from some rivets with less rounded edges than I’m used to, I didn’t have any problems there. Shipping however is kind of set and forget, you order them and eventually they appear. Don’t plan an outfit next week (or even a 2-3 weeks out) as you'll probably be disappointed. That said, I just got in a few pairs of shorts from them that I’m excited to wear as the weather gets warmer, so don’t be turned off by all that. Overall they’ve been great pants at a great price! Sixth the other jeans, https://preview.redd.it/uwn5glzsdara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fd95a06027aa01afe2bdeb69bcb54820593cda5 It was supposed to be in the 60s (a little over 15 for those of you who prefer temperature systems named after Swedes) so I brought out some color. Another pair of Lems (Chukkas) are paired with Wrangler 13MWZs (size 36) these sit just a little below the Bronsons and have a strong “dad fit” vibe. I hemmed them to have minimal break, though they’re sitting a little low in this pic to see that well, and I tapered the calves just a little to have a more straight cut. The Aloha shirt is from Stock Mfg that was on clearance many years ago and the overshirt is Van Heusen, US made and I suspect from the 80s, it’s a large and fits loose so I really only use it like this. The hat is another Ebbets Field Flannels piece, this time for the Brooklyn Tip Tops, though being from Massachusetts everyone assumes it’s the Red Sox. Seventh, Yeossal. https://preview.redd.it/xz448lr0dara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09834b2de12bc6078fff43ea2907305ef78bf16b https://preview.redd.it/43evtd83dara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=536543cc06d407dbf646c5bd8645b438bfcf8887 I wish I could have afforded a few more of these! Also that I could have compared them directly to Casatlantic’s offerings, unfortunately money is finite… A little more 40s Hollywood inspiration in this fit. Also worthy of note, that spot on the pants was due to some dry erase marker (again I'm a teacher), it jumps out more in pictures than real life. The shoes are some Clarks I’ve had longer than I can remember. The pants, Yeossal’s Double Belted Gurkha Trousers in olive, fit high and really do have a hollywood vibe, the denim doesn’t have quite the flow you want it to and the metal buckles feel a little flimsy, but I’ve really enjoyed these pants and they haven’t given my any issues yet (aside from that stain!). I did have to send the first pair I got back as I went with a 34 and definitely needed a 36. The turnaround was super fast! Everything else in this outfit was thrifted, a (slightly too small and possibly Dior) sweater, a slim fit Jos A Bank shirt (both medium) with a red paisley tie. The Vostok makes a reappearance! Eighth, deadstock. https://preview.redd.it/9advmbyycara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b581e9ff1cd0cf67bb9472fe7dac0b0700ba5794 Deadstock things tickle a special place in my brain. Being the first person to remove tags often put on before I was born brings an extra fun connection. Everything in this outfit barring the boots is deadstock or near it. The boots are Chippewa lineman's boots, and they are gosh darn comfy. The pants are Gung-Ho a Stan Ray subbrand. I would buy a million of these if I could, the rise could be a little bit higher but they are comfortable, the fabric is heavyweight and durable feeling, but not restrictive, the fit is straight but not baggy, I would tell you to buy them but I want them all for myself!! I sized them at 36 and they fit like a dream. One word of caution, the reviews about americanwear’s shipping times (where I bought them from) are no joke, you’ll get your pants… eventually. Moving up the shirt is one of two identical Big Ben shirts (both medium) I thrifted many years ago, worn out paper tags still attached. One I made fit more slim and the other I left alone, this one latter of those. The french chore coat is just that. The friperie I bought it from had already removed the tags but it doesn’t look like it had ever been worn, not brand here, just blue french herringbone bliss. Finally the Seiko makes a reappearance. Ninth, the penoutifit (got to practice those dad jokes!) https://preview.redd.it/dg16e995dara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7dadc114ac764d745fc50dcf0a9d42070b9ab43 I was reluctant to try out Ben Davis, they can be a little catch-as-catch-can in terms of what is in stock, but I managed to snag these navy trim fit pants. They go well with a lot of my shoes including the Iron Rangers seen here. They are a little lighter weight than the previously mentioned Gung Hos and sit a little higher. These are the second pair I ordered. I’ll address the first pair in my next outfit. I think the best thing that can be said about these is that they are pants, highly functional pants, the shape of the pocket is interesting if I had to have something jump out at me? This sweatshirt is from Bayside (cheap, union made, and a little long in the torso). I added a vintage Honda mechanics patch from eBay to the back. Finally, the jacket is a special one to me, if you search “a2z jacket” you can find them secondhand. When I first got into motorsport many years ago I bought one of these jackets new in XL. It’s a replica of some apparel seen in the Steve McQueen 1971 cinematic masterpiece, Le Mans). It lived with me through some dumb college shenanigans (for example I had to stitch up the side thanks to side impact airbag once), as years passed I added patches for teams I support, tracks I’ve been to, and series I’ve seen (or raced in), I also lost 100lbs, so I eventually bought one on eBay in my new size and swapped over the patches. I wear a lot of vintage clothes but this one takes the crown for the most comments, compliments, and conversation (it’s also the only one I’ve had people offer to buy literally off my back, more than once!). For those playing at home, the Seiko takes the lead! Tenth, paying the dog tax or how I learned to stop worrying and dress like a dad. https://preview.redd.it/d0owvy9vdara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c989da041e803a535f687cb8273d29fd5f95ec5 https://preview.redd.it/kd40u9vwdara1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c573a0441187421a8eba1e044f6770a21368eded These are the original fit Ben Davis pants. Let me start with the shoes though. They are Xero Aptos, which were just replaced by the Sunrise, these can be described perfectly in the words of one of my students, “those shoes look… comfortable”, teenagers are mean, mean but technically correct, they’re super comfy! The fit on these pants was intimidating, the legs are loose on me to the point where I get a draft sometimes. How did they do it in the 90s? The waist is as high as the Bronsons. I’m going to work to do more with them. The sweatshirt is another Bayside, this time with a vintage Goodyear patch affixed. The hat my wife got me at a local dog bakery (for those of you from central MA, Quite Fetching Barkery). The dog is Butters, she’s cute when she isn’t being a monster, her theme song. The watch is a Casio F-91W, combo breaker! Final thoughts In addition to some high waisted shorts I’ll be experimenting with from Bronson and Ben Davis, ones that are currently living in my closet and waiting for warmer days, I plan to buy a few more high waisted pants. I have a wedding coming up with an “old Florida” theme that may end up with me finally adding some Casatlantics (probably the Mogador). I also want to add a few pants from brick and morter menswear shops, like O'Connells, something similar to the Yeosalls but with a drapier fabric and a little more variety in weight. I find I’m more comfortable and way more willing to experiment with my outfits. I’m also going to make an effort to pop into more WAYWT threads, for better or worse. Now feel free to ask me questions, provide some criticism, or just talk high waisted pants and how to wear them! Disclaimer: I made no money from this post. Not only did I not receive any discounts (except for things bought on sale) but I had to pay double shipping for the Yeossal sizing issue. I made negative money so you could see some high waisted pants and I could have a writing exercise and some awesome pants! 2023.04.01 16:23 devilsravioli Riding the “Ragged Edge”: Lester Bush and Juanita Brooks - Martyrs of Mormonism [Juanita Brooks Utah History Conference 3/24/2023]
Last week (3/23/2023-3/25/2023) was the inaugural
Juanita Brooks Utah History Conference held at Utah Tech University. What ensued was a celebration of
Juanita Brooks’ legacy, a variety of presentations, and a guided tour (
Barbara Jones Brown & Richard Turley) of Mountain Meadows. Naturally, given the conference’s name-sake, the theme of standing for truth over power remained steady. Two talks stood out to me related to this topic. The talks were given by
Greg Prince (
DOM and the Rise of Modern Mormonism,
Gay Rights and the Mormon Church,
Leonard Arrington and the Writing of Mormon History, etc.) and
Paul Reeve (
Century of Black Mormons,
Religion of a Different Color,
Let’s Talk About Race and the Priesthood, etc), both highly respected in their respective fields of study. These talks particularly touched me because they penetrated a vein that has
significantly bothered me and has repeatedly disrupted my sleep: The institutional suppression of truth.
Greg Prince - Subsequent talk on Lester Bush following the presentation of the inaugural Juanita Brooks Award.(if timestamp doesn't work ff to 40m 25s)
To the surprise of those attending, during the Friday morning session of the conference, Greg Prince presented the inaugural Juanita Brooks Award to Lester Bush. Lester was not able to attend, but his wife was there to accept the award. Following the presentation, Greg Prince gave a moving talk dedicated to his best friend, Lester Bush. In 1973 Lester published the groundbreaking Dialogue article
MORMONISM'S NEGRO DOCTRINE: AN HISTORICAL OVERVIEW. This article became the foundation of what would become the “new” Mormon history regarding race and the priesthood/temple ban. Prince got to know Bush shortly after the publication of this monumental article. What followed the publication of Bush’s article was informal discipline that took many forms. Prince got to witness it all first-hand.
At a time when Spencer Kimball reorganized the office of Seventy, Bush was kept from ordination to the office of High Priest with no explanation while all his peers had their expected upgrade. After his success disrupting the Leonard Arrington led History Division of the Church, senior apostle Mark Peterson sought after other “intellectuals”. Lester Bush was one of those targeted. Despite direct and harsh calls from Peterson, Bush’s Stake President (Bill Marriott) refused to follow through with disciplinary action because he knew it was wrong to do so. Lester was a pariah among his own. The result of decades of social ostracization and “soft” discipline (described by one anonymous GA as “the worst'') was Bush’s inactivity in the Church (~30 years).
In 2009, Brent Rushforth (Director of
Dialogue when Bush’s 1973 article was published) shared with Prince and Bush that he had recently inquired of Jordan Kimball (grandson of Spencer) and Rebecca Kimball (wife of Jordan) regarding whether Lester’s 1973 article had any impact on Spencer Kimball and the 1978 “revelation”. Jordan assuredly told Brent that they need not wonder any longer. Later, when Prince was able to get Rebecca on the record, she explained that upon Spencer Kimball’s death, son Ed Kimball came across Bush’s 1973 Dialogue article marked up heavily in Kimball's personal home study. None of the other Dialogue articles in Kimball’s study were marked up in his distinctive red pencil. Vindication was on the horizon.
In 2014 Prince emailed his good friend Jeffrey R. Holland to see if there was any way Bush’s work could further be validated by the Church. Shortly after, Bush was invited to give the
2015 Sterling M. McMurrin Lecture on Religion & Culture at the University ot Utah. Lester got to meet
Steven Snow (then Church Historian, 2012-2018) the same day, as well as
Marlin Jensen (the former Church Historian, 2005-2012). Both validated Lester and his monumental work. In addition, Lester and
Darius Gray got to meet, in person, for the first time. The following morning, Lester got further reassurance from Elder Holland that Lester was an exceptional person and that his work was valuable to Mormon history.
Paul Reeve - "Riding Herd with Juanita Brooks: A View of Latter-day Saint History from the Ragged Edge" (if timestamp doesn't work ff to 2h 46m 3s)
The final talk of the Friday morning session was given by Paul Reeve, titled, "Riding Herd with Juanita Brooks: A View of Latter-day Saint History from the Ragged Edge". The imagery outlined in his talk was outstanding. He described Brooks’ upbringing on the outskirts of “Dixie” (Bunkerville Nevada). The ultimate edge of the edge of Deseret. Not only was her residence on the edge, but so was her approach to the gospel and her Church. Those around Juanita wondered whether she would talk/think her way out of the Church as she questioned traditional narratives and biblical fundamentalism. After she published her groundbreaking book
The Mountain Meadows Massacre (1950) Juanita wondered whether she would be disciplined by her male Church leaders. She decided that if she would not be allowed to retain her membership
and write objective history, then she would choose truth and forfeit her membership. This stalwart resolve served as the foundation of what would become the “new” Mormon history. Honesty became more important than perpetuating dogma. As a result of writing honest Mormon history, Juanita forced the Mormon Church to confront its past and decide what they were going to do with their future. The Church, unfortunately, rejected truth and transparency in her lifetime.
Early in Juanita's life, she was given sage advice in the form of an analogy. She was taught ( I paraphrase) that in order to guide a herd of cattle, you must persuade from the edge. You can not confront a head strong herd head-on and expect the cattle to remain cohesive. Worst case scenario, conflict results, and cowboys and cattle get hurt and lost. Juanita took this counsel to heart and rode that “ragged edge” of the herd, gently guiding the Mormon Church toward honest inquiry. Regardless, she would never see the fruits of her labor as she died in 1989, not long after the Arrington history department was dismantled and moved to BYU. A form of formal denunciation of honest inquiry.
Reeve explained that he values this advice, and lives by it, as he grew up ranching in south-eastern Utah and is actively teaching church membership the truth about the Church and race relations. Guiding a herd of headstrong cattle requires finesse. In an age where truth can not be contained, the importance of honest discourse has come front and center.
Following the panel presentations (Reeve include), one listener posed a
question (if timestamp doesn't work ff to 3h 16m 10s) to the panel that consisted of Paul Reeve (UofU) and
Janiece Johnson (BYU).
Joseph Stuart (BYU) did a good job summarizing the attendee’s question. I’ll paraphrase (in case you didn’t watch the video):
We can clearly see that Juanita Brooks was riding the “ragged edge” of the church (same goes for Lester Bush). Who do you see riding that “ragged edge” of the Church today? What topics are they focusing on? As the question was dictated, I looked forward to hearing what a BYU employee would provide for an answer (given the Church’s history of suppressing truth and deemphasis of controversial topics). After the question was posed, Johnson immediately deferred to Reeve. I wish I could pretend I was surprised. Reeve proceeded to name Taylor Petrey (
Tabernacles of Clay) as an example of someone riding that edge concerning the Church’s evolving teachings related to gender and sexuality. This was a great example, and naturally, one that would make any orthodox member uncomfortable considering we were all attending a conference commemorating those in the past (Brooks and Bush) who were discarded when they published their seminal, controversial works. It was a surreal experience. For all we know, in 30 years, Taylor Petrey will be given the Juanita Brooks Award (despite the backlash he received from his excellent book and pivotal
Dialogue article:
Toward a Post-Heterosexual Mormon Theology).
In the end, the institutional hierarchy of the Church who proposed the 1978 “revelation” did not cite Lester Bush, but rejected him. Juanita Brooks never got to see her work appreciated by her beloved Church. Formal
acknowledgement of the Church’s directing role in the Mountain Meadows Massacre didn’t happen until 2007. Only today do we embrace her objective and unapologetic view of the past. Today we celebrate the quasi church endorsed works of Turley and Brown as they publish authoritative texts on the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Today we watch scholars like Petrey
lament the circumstances of LDS academics as the institutional Church entrenches itself into orthodoxy with commander
Clark Gilbert at the helm. The leadership of the Church today, apparently, does not embrace the suppression of their predecessors (GTEs, JSPP, Saints, etc.)...
Or do they? Remember, Boyd K Packer, the zealous crony of Ezra Taft Benson and Mark E Peterson, the sworn enemies of “
so-called scholars”, was acting president or president of the Q12 from 1994 to 2015. He sat at the head seat of every
weekly coordination meeting of the Q12 for over 20 years, training and counseling just about every current member of the Q15 extensively. He watched the control of truth slip from his hands as technology reached frictionless levels of transference. He could no longer easily excommunicate those who published unflattering truths of his golden idols (his predecessors in Church leadership). Boyd was forced to concede with progress. The publication of the initial 13
Gospel Topics Essays (2013-2015) served as the metaphorical final 13 nails in his coffin (2015).
Now to my main point. The soul touching/crushing point that frequently makes its appearance in my heart/mind (most recently in St George). Why has the institutional Church refused to honestly confront its past? Brody, Brooks, Bush, Arrington, and Quinn were all attacked by their ecclesiastical leadership. Today, we hold up their scholarship and cite them in official Church publications. What is it about telling the truth that causes the Brethren to hunt for scholars? Why does paranoia abound regarding BYU and its faculty? Why do many members refuse to look into the past of their own Church beyond the correlated resources offered on LDS.org? My theory lies in the heart of Boyd Packer’s poignant advice to, then new GA, Lynn G. Robbins:
“Which way do you face?”. The foundation of the LDS church
is the reliability of modern prophets and their ability to receive and convey the mind and will of Deity. If the leadership of the Church loses this value proposition, then the Church is gone. Boyd’s advice is designed to maintain the idolatrous nature of the Q15.
They give directions.
We listen. A submissive, unquestioning membership is what they need for their Church to thrive. The absolute antithesis of unquestioning loyalty and obedience is inquiry. Curiosity is the root of academia. Questioning established tradition lies at the heart of refining truths. Academia strives to uncover every rock, illuminate every hidden corner, and question the questions. Fiat lux.
Naturally, inquiry will reveal unflattering elements of the beloved prophets, seers, and revelators of the Mormon past. Their teachings will be interpreted in a new light. Their journals will reveal their hidden intentions. Their accusers will be vindicated. The more you learn about the men in the ivory tower, behind the curtain, the more human they become. The cultural façade of prophetic infallibility drifts away with the myths of Santa Clause, Atlantis, and a moon made of bleu cheese. The
14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet start to sound a little authoritative when you realize the leaders of the Church were simply selected through a network of nepotism and relations. The
November 2015 Policy flip-flopping starts to make sense after contrasting it with John Taylor’s 1886 revelation and the Manifesto Woodruff and gang so reluctantly published. The institutional guiding principles that resulted in the
SEC Order make a whole lot of sense after reading the lengths Joseph Smith went through to maintain his secrets in Nauvoo. Studying the past illuminates the present.
These men try so unbelievably hard to maintain a prophetic figure of perfection. President Russell Nelson
taught, “Prophets are rarely popular. But we will
always teach the truth!”. His closest ally and wife, Wendy, last year challenged the dwindling membership of both Europe and California in private broadcasts to question
everything said by
anyone besides President Nelson. How does a membership consisting of nuanced, informed, and participating individuals react to messages like this? I’ll tell you how I felt: skeptical. With every authoritative address and comment reliant on unrighteous dominion, the leadership of the Church thickens the doctrine of
obedience over conscience.
This is Mormonism. Bending your soul to conform to the will of the Brethren. This is what historians like Juanita Brooks and Lester Bush refused to do. They gently pushed from the ragged edge, persuading the herd that is Mormonism toward truth and reconciliation. They paid socially for their guiding principles (truth). The stubborn cattle at the head of the herd believe they are guiding the masses, when in reality, those getting bruised and battered on the precipitous edges are ensuring goodness remains on the horizon. May we encourage and sustain those on the edge and continue to immortalize those that have gone before us. God bless Juanita and God bless Lester.
I will close with the following enlightening quote from Spencer W. Kimball, just as Prince did in his address [emphasis mine]:
“Now, my brothers and sisters, it seems clear to me, indeed, this impression weighs upon me—that the Church is at a point in its growth and maturity when we are at last ready to move forward in a major way. Some decisions have been made and others pending, which will clear the way, organizationally. But the basic decisions needed for us to move forward, as a people, must be made by the individual members of the Church. The major strides which must be made by the Church will follow upon the major strides to be made by us as individuals.” (President Spencer W. Kimball, Let Us Move Forward and Upward, April 1979 GC)
So which way do you face again, Boyd?

2023.04.01 16:03 Nina_Innsted the mystery of Michigan's Dogman
This story dates back almost 140 years ago in 1887 when lumberjacks working in
Wexford County Michigan first spotted the dogman. The Dogman is described as a seven-foot-tall creature who is half-man, half-canine. He is said to have a dog’s head paired with a human torso with bright blue or amber eyes.
Dogman is known for his ability to walk on two legs. If you ever came face to face with him, you’d soon know about it. The head has been compared to a ferocious hound, and there’s another type that resembles a sasquatch. Like the sasquatch, Dogman is in the category ‘cryptid,’ meaning legendary and elusive beast.
According to legends, the Michigan Dogman appears in a ten-year cycle that falls on years ending in 7, he is most often spotted in the NW quadrant of the state and gained new found popularity in 1987 when a local DJ wrote and performed a song about the dogman.
In 1937 in Paris, Michigan, a man named Robert Fortney was attacked by five wild dogs and said that one of the dogs walked on two legs like a man.
Reports of similar creatures also came from
Allegan County in the 1950s, and in Manistee and Cross Village in 1967. There is a creature in Wisconsin, known as the
Beast of Bray Road, who is described similarly to the Dogman.
Dogman has been explored in popular media including March 2010, when the creature was featured in an episode of the history channel show
MonsterQuest. In late 2011, filmmaker Rich Brauer released a film called
Dogman which premiered at a theater in Traverse City, MI.
Have you had a run in with the Dogman? What do you think of him (her?) only returning on years ending in 7? Are there canine calendars?

2023.04.01 15:36 purplekiren If you’re on Team Do Both, you should consider voting for Park Chan-wook. Here’s why.
I’ve seen a lot of people on here arguing that Griffin and David should do both Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho given the closeness of the race. And I agree, which is why I’m voting for Park Chan-wook.
I’ve seen some people argue that the Do Both faction should wait until the last possible minute and cast their votes in such a way to force a tie, but I think that’s more likely to give a sudden boost in votes to whoever is down by what is quite likely to be a single digit number of votes into being the winner. And, in addition, it is most likely all for naught, as
David Sims has claimed that they would just follow the procedures established in year past and tiebreak in that scenario and
not do both. Thus, if we take forcing a tie as the kind of hyper-coordinated effort that sites like Reddit and Twitter simply aren’t conducive to coordinating and as something that is substantially more likely to just boost one candidate arbitrarily, I’m going to make the argument that a Park Chan-wook miniseries makes a Bong Joon-ho series both more likely and better than the other way around.
Park is essentially the guy who created the wave of cinema that Bong flourished in. He’s the creator of the context for Bong Joon-ho, and a miniseries on his films and their impact would be good tablesetting for a Bong Joon-ho miniseries in a way that Bong wouldn’t really be for Park Chan-wook. That’s not to say Park takes the gas out of the tank for the context of a Bong miniseries; far from it. It actually creates a discussion of that space in a broader sense that can then allow discussion of how filmmakers like Bong carved out their own space within it and then used it to go into the stratosphere and onto the global stage. Doing Park makes Bong Joon-ho a natural spiritual successor series in however many months/years. Similarly, if we’re just discussing programming logistics, Bong is a shorter miniseries than Park, and more likely to be programmed on his own. Of course, we’ve seen that this argument often means waiting years and years for that filmmaker to be covered, and I don’t want to use the dreaded I-word to describe him, but if your calculus is maximizing the chances of both getting covered, I think it’s fair to say that Park is marginally the less-likely one to just be programmed.
Now, if you search your heart of hearts and find even the slightest preference for Bong, I’d say to vote for him. But if you’re really on the fence and truly just want both to be covered, I think Park makes more sense as the candidate to vote for.
Tl;dr - trying to force a tie is very likely to be counterproductive and, even if it succeeds, futile. Park sets the table very nicely for a Bong series and Bong is the one who is more likely to be programmed on his own (though, not super substantially, I concede).

Jamchart Notes:
Stash - Moves beyond "Stash" at about 7:00 for a good 2 minutes of exploration before returning.
Tweezer - Very CYHMK-like jam for several measures. Smokes!
Show Notes:
The beginning of My Friend featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Antelope included I Feel the Earth Move and Barracuda teases. The prevalent rumor among audience members (aided, to some extent, by the band and crew helping spread the rumor) was that Neil Young would make a guest appearance. Trey teased Heart of Gold before Llama and Sugar Mountain before The Squirming Coil and in Lawn Boy. Tweezer contained Fire (Ohio Players) teases. After Big Ball Jam, the crew set up a folding chair, Trey's acoustic guitar, and an extra microphone on stage. Trey introduced "Neil Young" to the roaring crowd, then went behind the drums and began playing the Hold Your Head Up intro with Fish appearing instead. Some friends sitting in the front row promptly hit Fish in the face with a pie. Fish sang a line of After the Gold Rush (with Page assisting on piano) before launching into Terrapin. After the second Hold Your Head Up, Trey joked that Bill Clinton would be helping out on saxophone for the next song prompting Page and Fish to tease Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. Carolina was performed without microphones.

2023.04.01 06:53 CollectandRun Outlook for AAA, AA, A+, A
These are my notes on the farm system for the casual fan.
AAA - bats
Loftin, Gentry, Garcia are the three batters to watch out for. Big year for all three to find a way to get up to the majors for anything longer than to replace a player on the 10 day IR. Pratto and Fermin have already seen significant time in the majors. Pratto has to get his K% down and it feels like it's his last year to prove it before we figure out a way to move on for him. And I might be generous at that.Samad Taylor is another piece and would probably see the Majors faster if he wasn't behind Loftin / Garcia. Logan Porter, CJ Alexander, and Tucker Bradley both have talent but not a real pathway to the majors like the others. In general KC has a nice stable of Short Stops that have flexibility to play a few other positions.
AAA - pitching There's names that you'll recognize Max Castillo, Josh Staumont, Jackson Kowar, Andres Nunez, Jonathan Heasley. All not making the 26 man lineup for a variety of reasons.Josh Taylor is coming back from Tommy John and might be slowly put back into the Royals 26 man lineup around June/July. Ryan Weiss had a ton of momentum in his final few Spring Training games. Finally there's Evan Sisk who we got from the MAT trade who is older but only 30 innings into playing in AAA.
AAA Overall - I don't expect a ton of players to be promoted to AAA like last year and I don't expect that many players to be sent up (barring injury). Not that it's vital to anyone reading but the team itself will win games based on the fact that you have pitching that is veterans to AAA by now.
Similar to last year Dayton & JJ simply didn't put the Royals in a position to have a young arm that is going to crack the rotation from AAA this year.
KC needs to figure out what the long-term plan for Jackson Kowar and Jonathan Heasley is. To be frank, there's not one player on this roster that I feel like will be a starting 5 rotation guy. Even with Castillo, I think he's best if he comes back as a Long Relief guy. But could see him starting a couple of games if we need it next year.
AA Pitching - I rank what happens in AA pitching at the top of priorities for the Royals this year. MLB + Minor League. This is almost like a film that the studio decides to be split in two movies, because the truth is that 2023 will likely end with a cliffhanger for all of these characters at best, and they'll all need extra innings in AA to start 2024.
The aftermath of JJ/Dayton blowing up the core of Royals from last offseason involved a swift change to focus on Minor League Bullpen prospects that would mix in with prospects that we already had.
Andrew Hoffman (from the ATL draft pick trade), Steven Cruz (a closer we got from the MAT trade), Beck Way (technically still in A+ getting more SP chances but will likely be a RP once he gets to AA) , TJ Sikkema (AB trade) , Jacob Wallace, Christian Chamberlain, Will Klein, Chandler Champlain (AB trade) are names that you'll hear in AA this year. All of them have the same mission. Increase K% and lower BB% and refine their pitches as they work on command and control.
KC now has Brian Sweeney as their pitching coach who did amazing stuff with bullpen pitchers in Cleveland. But none of these players has had significant innings in AA so this is close to Year 1 Day 1. AND with Q coming from Tampa, it should be noted that they really like to keep pitchers in the Minors until everything is there to come up. There's no speed rushing anyone up to the majors.
From a starting perspective, we have Jonathan Bowlan coming back from injury for the first few months. And Alec Marsh, a fan favorite, but had inconsistent stats at times. Bowlan and Marsh are really the only two guys I could see called up to AAA.
AA Bats - Luca Tresh is AAA ready but the Royals probably want him taking reps in AA + work with the pitchers. I could also see Hayden Dunhurst coming up quickly to be here as well. Robbie Glendinning performed really well last year and had a great show of RBIs.
I think there are going to be a ton of call-ups to AA.
AA Overall - Andy LaRoche and Larry Carter are in AAA this year. LaRoche was the Quad Cities Hitting Coach and was pretty effective. Larry Carter was actually the bullpen coach in Kansas City last year under Cal Eldred. He's been with the organization for decades and the organization retaining to ship him down to AA shows how much he'll be working on converting prospects into Bullpen pitchers. My guess is that unless a player is somehow magical , everyone will start in Mid-Relief and slowly become a start in this system.
It might not be what he'd want to hear but Robbie Glendinning is a coach's son and a future coach - either in the US or in Australia. He'll be great when some of our 2022 draft picks rise up.
A+ Pitching - Beck Way starts in Quad Cities but I think he'll be moving to AA fairly soon.
Noah Cameron was by far the best stat performer in the Royals Minor League system last year. But we only saw him in A+. Big year in coming for him. William Fleming (who was the key part of the Carlos Santana trade) looks surprisingly nice. Low BB rate but could increase his K%. Anthony Simonelli had a solid K/BB rate and could be a sleeper as well.
A+ Batting - Peyton Wilson is a 2021 2nd rounder from Alabama that performed well last year and is in that scrum. There's also River Town who had a great summer last year. Tyler Tolbert is a basestealing machine who can also play defense. I'm mostly curious if we try him out at center field a bit more despite being on the fringe of 6'0.
A+ Overall - I think the biggest part of A+ will some of the college arms we drafted being MOVED UP after 30 or so innings in A ball. Brooks Conrad is returning this season after an impressive season last year.
LOW A Pitching - I think Ben Kudrna, Frank Mozzicato, Shane Panzini stay in A for the year unless we see something wild happen. Jonatan Bernal is a name that should sort of be used in any LOW A conversation with those names. The 20 year old came in the Whit trade and had a very respectable K/BB rate. Should definitely be in that Top 30 MLB prospect conversation. Lucinder Avila is another International Prospect that most people have ahead of Bernal because of arm talent but will also need another year in A.
With the 2022 Draft picks...
Mason Barnett should have a short time in A before going to A+ and maybe even AA. He and Noah Cameron could be the players that replace Marsh and Bowlan if they are called back up to AAA in June. Ben Sears, David Sandlin (strike machine), Chazz Martinez, Brandon Johnson, and Mack Anglin (also looked great) shouldn't spend that much time in A ball. No more than 30 innings each if not fewer.
LOW A Batting - I expect Gavin Cross, Cayden Wallace, and Javier Vaz to be in AA within a very small amount of innings.
That being said it'll be interesting what happens with Top 30 prospects Lizandro Rodriguez and Daniel Vazquez. They'll stay in A for the year, but they are both getting. My guess is that Carter Jensen will stay in A, for no other reason than to improve his catching and worth with the pitchers.
Hayden Dunhurst will likely fly up to AA to stay with the developing bullpen there.
A Overall - I probably haven't done enough homework to tell you who we can bring up from Rookie Ball to fill in the voids for our 2022 draft college arms moving up. The main thing to watch is seeing how well the pitching does and if
OTHER NOTES :
Diego Hernandez , a top 20 Organizational Prospect, is likely to miss the entire season.
Asa Lacy isn't really mentioned in this because I have no idea where Asa Lacy is at. He played in AA last year but also seemed to be dealing with multiple injuries on top of the pitching issues. If anyone has an update on Brennon McNair , I'd love to see how close he is to Columbia. My guess is that he's next up as he just turned 20.
OVERALL MILB:
The big headscratcher is that we have some depth at infield that is sort of "figure out what to do with it ASAP" . Loftin/Garcia/TayloCJ Alexander are all fighting for 1 spot. 3 of them are Top 30 players. 2 are Top 5 players in the Organization. And that spot might disappear in early 2024 if Cayden Wallace has numbers in AA (like I expect him to). My guess is KC might do the opposite of their usual trading strategy and try to package some of those players with our pitchers/veterans to try to get a high ranked prospect. But who knows. It'll suck if Loftin is Brewer Hicklen 2.0.
You never know, but I don't see bats that will breakout that aren't aren't fringe MLB players (Loftin , Garcia , Gentry). What you really want is to say "in 2024 we'll have two starting pitchers to fill in for Grienke / Lyles / Keller / Yarborough." But the truth is that there's no real flight path to getting anything above their current talent level. Even if Bowlan and Marsh look good, they'll be year 1 next year.
This overview is sort of healthy issue to fans wondering what happens if we aren't close to 500 at the deadline.
Obviously it'd be great if KC could somehow get young starting pitching from players that we trade away.
You should always take BPA, but if this is somewhat strategized.
AAA/AA/A+/A - Starting Pitching - This is every franchise in the MLB, but especially us. Our realistic clock on getting a starting rotation arm of high caliber is 2025+.
AAA - Bullpen. We have time before any of the prospects in AA develop into MLB caliber bullpen arms and the odds of all of them developing are still pretty small. We can get by for a year with what we have, but we'll probably need to figure out a way to fill in spots.
AAA/AA Outfield - We'll have Gavin Cross there. I think we probably need to find ourselves a defensive centerfielder in the vein of Kyle Isbel.
AA Catcher - Fermin will probably see some time in the Majors. You'd love to find a Logan Porter type of Catcher that can also play 1st base just so the pitchers have practice.
A/A+ - First Base / DH / Catcher. I think Catchers are valuable in the minors because they help the development of pitchers and can cover up for a ton of their mistakes in terms of winning games.
